Into the Hoods: Remixed Directed by Kate Prince
The UK’s leading hip hop dance company ZooNation makes their much anticipated first visit to Brighton with Into the Hoods: Remixed - a revamped version of the award-winning urban hip-hop fairytale that stormed the West End in 2008. Set on the Ruff Endz estate, classic fairytale characters are reimagined as two lost schoolchildren are tasked with finding an iPhone as white as milk, trainers as pure as gold, a hoodie as red as blood and some weave as yellow as corn.

Shockingly direct and heartbreakingly funny, this is the story of one man’s double life in the flashy, trashy New York of the 1990s. An ad man by day and a drag queen by night, Josh battles alcoholism and clings on to his relationship with Jack, a crack-addicted rent boy. A Local Boy by Dan Murphy
When the body of a local teenager is found next to the war memorial in Romford, a community is shocked. A mother thinks of her son. A police officer searches for answers. A lonely girl waits at a bus stop. And two teenagers discover love – in a chat box, that is. In a world of instant connection, of cyberchats and selfies, how well can we
ever really know those around us? A Local Boy is a provocative, gripping, and touchingly funny new play for teenagers about who we are and what we are capable of. Age 13+

Duration 60 minutes
In a deserted library, two people with an unusual fondness for books embark on a playful journey. As they immerse themselves in fiction and plunge deep into the richness and depth of literature, books become headdresses, slippers and paper planes that fly through the air. In this world of transformation and wonder, books are piled high to create a precarious landscape.

Into the West She’s my horse, she is! What’s her name Grandpa? She’s called Tir na n’Og. Why’s she called that? Because she came from the land under the sea. A place where it is always summer, and no-one grows old. Imagine a glorious white horse comes out of a sea-mist and into your troubled life. Imagine trying to keep her on the 14th floor of a Dublin tower block. Now imagine the police are after you, and your only escape is to ride into the west… With this special 20th anniversary production, Travelling Light introduces a new generation of audiences to this internationally-acclaimed story of grit and magic, love and loss, hope and discovery.

Otava Yo
Perotá Chingó
A gang of serious virtuosos playing slightly unhinged songs about heroic sailors, goats and pancakes, Otava Yo bring the abandoned traditions of Russian folk singing and merrymaking into the 21st century. Expect the full-hearted passion and surreal joie de vivre of Slavic village life let loose on a Brighton stage. Although it would be wise to also expect the unexpected from musicians who have thrilled and bamboozled audiences as far afield as Mexico and India.
Described by Rolling Stone as ‘spontaneous and magical’, this Argentine foursome spin music of raw beauty and magnetic simplicity out of the intertwining threads of two voices, guitar and minimal percussion. Having recently toured Latin America and Europe in a camper van, picking up influences as diverse as hip-hop and jazz along the way, Perotá Chingó sing gracefully meandering folk songs of freedom and nomadism, dappled with sunshine.

Senior students of the Royal College of Music explore the remarkable expressiveness of the wind ensemble through an intriguingly contrasting range of works. This recital by the cream of the country’s young wind musicians journeys from the perfect poise of Mozart’s breezy Serenade and an arrangement of Beethoven’s beloved Pathétique to Janácek’s jaunty evocation of youth and an early work by Richard Strauss.
Quite simply one of the finest chamber ensembles on the classical music scene, the Elias Quartet is a firm favourite at Brighton Dome. The programme for its second concert here this season follows the genesis of the string quartet from an early piece by Haydn, credited with inventing the format, to the full-blown Romanticism of Mendelssohn and the 20th-century dynamism of Britten.

Dynamism and charisma are the hallmarks of the Heath Quartet, the young ensemble that is forging an impressive international profile. The pieces in this concert share characteristics of elegance and eloquence: Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue is inspired by Bach; Tchaikovsky considered his quartet to be is best work when he completed it in 1874; while Ravel had a special affection for his sprightly yet melancholic piece.

‘[A] splendid orchestra that really is one of this country’s cultural miracles’ The Daily Telegraph
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Heroes and Aliens: Epic Galactic Soundtracks
Pete Harrison conductor
One of the country’s most adventurous and acclaimed orchestras steps towards the final frontier in a concert that is literally out of this world. Music from some of the all-time great space movies conjures fantastic worlds and spectacle as only cinema — and a great orchestra — can.
Including: John Williams
Star Wars E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Close Encounters of the Third Kind War of the Worlds
Stirring tunes, lush orchestration and inherent drama make film scores the true standard bearers of the great symphonic tradition, and nowhere is this more evident than in the selection of pieces in this programme. Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra harnesses the power of great films and great music-making as it takes off for a concert that has universal appeal.

Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.2 Mendelssohn Symphony No.3, ‘Scottish’
A programme of rich textures and vivid atmosphere opens with two short works that revel in irresistible melody: Berlioz’s lilting orchestration of Weber’s Invitation to the Dance and Mascagni’s swooning, intense Intermezzo. Chopin’s elegant concerto is a scintillating showcase for a great pianist like Melvyn Tan, while the sultry glamour of Scheherazade rounds off the afternoon in exotic style.
Howard Shelley has long been acknowledged as one of the greatest of all British pianists, and is now also acclaimed as a conductor. The stately grace of Brahms gives way to Shostakovich in uncharacteristically playful mood, and the programme culminates in grand style with Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony, conceived in the ruined Chapel of Holyrood, Edinburgh – a suitably gothic beginning for this masterpiece of wind-swept Romanticism.
The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra begins 2016 with three composers who developed new and distinctive soundworlds for their eras. Weber was the great pioneer of high Romanticism in music, and his music for Oberon, full of colour and incident, is the culmination of his genius. A sense of ethereal calm pervades Prokofiev’s dreamy First Violin Concerto, while Brahms’s Third Symphony is a work of yearning lyricism and passion.

Rob Clark piano Barry Wordsworth conductor Brighton Festival Chorus Alwyn Overture: Derby Day Bernstein Symphony No.2 ‘The Age of Anxiety’ Vaughan Williams Symphony No.1 ‘A Sea Symphony’
The Brighton Philharmonic is backed by the full force of Brighton Festival Chorus for a concert of 20th century masterworks. Following Alwyn’s dramatic overture, inspired by Frith’s painting Derby Day, Bernstein’s Second Symphony includes passages for piano alongside jazz-tinged exuberance and eloquent introspection. The vast scope of Vaughan Williams’s Sea Symphony reflects the immensity of the ocean itself and provides stirring opportunities for a great chorus.

Mozart Overture, Lucio Silla Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 Beethoven Symphony No. 7
Classical Music
London Philharmonic Orchestra Award-winning Serbian pianist Stefan Ciric opens his three concert residency with the Orchestra to perform Brahms' Second Piano Concerto. The Overture to Lucio Silla, written when Mozart was just 16, is a study in elegant sprightliness. In contrast, Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto is an opulent expression of artistic maturity. Beethoven’s zesty Seventh Symphony will send you home on a wave of pure joie de vivre.

R Strauss Macbeth Khachaturian Violin Concerto Stravinsky Firebird Suite (1945 version)
The London Philharmonic Orchestra serves up a feast of musical colours and moods in this concert. The majesty and lyricism of Strauss’ rarely heard tone poem Macbeth whets the audience's appetite for the dazzling vivacity of the Violin Concerto by Khachaturian, whose Spartacus Adagio is one of the great themes of classical music. To finish, Stravinsky’s unique syncopation spices his blazing ballet music for The Firebird.

Falla The Three-Cornered Hat Suite No. 2 Rodrigo Fantasia para un gentilhombre Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet (excerpts)
In this final concert of the season, the Orchestra takes us to Spain for the suite based on Falla’s ballet The Three-Cornered Hat, inspired by the folk music of Andalusia, and Rodrigo’s Fantasia para un gentilhombre, played by the world’s leading young classical guitarist. We then visit Italy via Russia, with Prokofiev’s intensely dramatic and exquisitely romantic Romeo and Juliet, a remarkable evocation of character and circumstance.
