Welcome
Summer at Brighton Dome Welcome to Brighton Dome’s summer season. Following on from the jammed-packed 46th Brighton Festival in May we have a wonderful mix of events on offer and as the country turns to celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, all that these events represent find their reflection in a terrific programme of performances at Brighton Dome. We are delighted to present a series of very special chamber recitals across Sussex, working in partnership with the London 2012 Festival, Young Classical Artists Trust, Charleston and two local festivals. Combining the music of Kurtag and Schubert these small and beautiful concerts bring stunning music to magnificent locations across the region, creating three unmissable summer Saturdays.
Brighton Festival Voyage á Nantes! For three days and three nights from 26 July 2012, Brighton Festival is delighted to be the guest curator at Le Lieu Unique, national center for arts in Nantes, France. As part of Le Milieu du Monde, expect an exciting and late night programme of installations and music that sit between that of a gallery and a club night.
And this season marks some very special returns to Brighton Dome: after more than seven years we are thrilled to welcome back punk-poet icon Patti Smith, and in an exciting double bill are the much-lauded collective The Imagined Village and Indian superstar Raghu Dixit. After the success of last year’s In Good Company, members of the Hofesh Shechter Company, (Brighton Dome’s Resident Dance Company) reveal their own choreographic talents, this time in a new group of commissioned works; and street and break dancers display their awe-inspiring skills in Breakin’ Convention. Our theatre programme showcases the very best in smaller-scale companies, with something for adults and families alike, whilst great comedy performers includes Simon Amstell and Sandi Toksvig. We look forward to welcoming you to Brighton Dome and to celebrating summer with you.

The Imagined Village Raghu Dixit In this double bill these two storming live acts put a modern spin on centuries-old folklore, making for one unforgettable world music encounter. Imagine a 15th-century ballad retuned to an electro reggae beat; or a dub roots revival of a medieval poem. The Imagined Village mixes traditional English folk song with the varied cultural heritage of modern Britain to create a compelling new musical vision. This freewheeling collective of top-flight British musicians includes English folk icons like Eliza and Martin Carthy alongside members of Afro Celt Sound System, Cornershop, Transglobal Underground and The Bays. Raghu Dixit – already approaching superstar status in his native India – came to the attention of British audiences courtesy of his show-stealing performance on Later With Jools... Overnight his debut album became iTunes top world music download. Since then he has packed out festivals and concert halls, won the Songlines Newcomer Award for 2011 and become Artist in Residence at London's Southbank. With his stirring fusion of traditional Indian folk, world rhythms and Western pop, this is the new sound of the subcontinent. Join Imagined Village and Raghu Dixit for a sublime celebration of the enduring power of song.
‘Imagined Village’s success lies in taking traditional material and making it sound relevant and contemporary – which is what folk music should be.’ Evening Standard Sun 24 Jun, 8pm Concert Hall £15, £18

Patti Smith and her Band The original art-punk queen and rebel rock icon returns to Brighton Dome.
Suzanne Vega plus support
This summer Patti Smith releases her 11th studio album, Banga. This highly anticipated album marks Smith’s first collection of original material since 2004. Patti Smith cut her teeth on the 70s New York scene, and has been making rousing, literate and cathartic rock 'n' roll ever since. From her seminal 1975 debut Horses (Gloria; Free Money) through Easter (and the art rock anthem Because the Night) to mid-90s collaborations with Jeff Buckley, John Cale and Tom Verlaine, Patti Smith’s uncompromising creativity and restless energy have inspired a generation of imitators and admirers. Since the turn of the millennium Smith has been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, released a string of acclaimed albums, been the subject of Steven Sebring’s cult documentary Dream of Life, and authored the award-winning memoir Just Kids. Last year she was listed among the TIME 100 most influential people in the world, as well as one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists.
The pioneering American singer-songwriter returns with her gentle, yet powerfully political acoustic pop. Songs such as Marlene on the Wall, Luka and the hugely successful album Solitude Standing brought her to a global audience. Her career received an extra boost in the early 90s when UK-based dance duo DNA released a remix of a cappella song Tom's Diner, which charted world-wide. Her music has inspired a generation of female singer-songwriters such as KT Tunstall and Alanis Morissette and, having recently embarked on a project to re-imagine her own songbook in a stripped down and intimate manner by creating four new thematic albums, she is ready to inspire thousands more.

Come to Where I’m From
The Last of the Lake
In this special one-off performance of short, sharp dramas, selected local playwrights come home to tell their tale.
‘In distant desert villages where water is sparse young girls can either accept what fate has given them or fight against it.’
Leading new writing company Paines Plough (Wasted, Brighton Festival 2012) has been recruiting playwrights from across the UK to create new works responding to the notion of where they are from. In villages, towns and cities the length and breadth of the country these plays are now being performed, creating a theatrical tapestry of Britain. Performed by the playwrights, Come to Where I’m From is an inspiring and inventive theatrical experience that asks whether home is really where the heart is…
The very last of the life-giving lake is about to run out. The village just hopes their saviours don’t run out on them. This new play from acclaimed young company Rough Fiction brings the technicolour and extravagant world of magical realism to life as two girls twinned by birth and by prophesy, engage in an epic, healing and emotionally-testing journey to the sea. The Last of the Lake blends bold physicality and immersive audio-visual design; allowing a rich and heady world of birds, mermaids and ritual to burst into life.
‘The lifeblood of the UK’s theatre ecosystem.’ The Guardian Open Auditions Paines Plough will be holding open auditions for professional actors on Friday 15 Jun between 10am -6pm at the Pavilion Theatre. For more details on how to apply visit painesplough.com/about-us/get-involved

Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony was written and premiered in the same year as the monumental Fifth (1808). Yet its pastoral mood and sunny complexion couldn’t be further in tone from its tempestuous predecessor. ‘No one can love the country as much as I do,’ wrote the composer to Therese Malfatti (a future suitor), ‘for surely woods, trees and rocks produce the echo which man desires to hear.’ Such bucolic sentiments are reflected in the titles of the symphony’s five movements (such as Scene by the Brook and Merry Gathering of the Country Folk), and are perfectly captured in the serene countenance of this highly melodic work. In contrast, the concert opens with the brooding malevolence of Dvorák’s Noonday Witch, a darkly expressive tone poem based on Karel Jaromir Erben’s sinister Bohemian folk tale. The concert also includes one of the cornerstones of the violin repertoire, the seductive and exhilarating Concerto in G minor by Max Bruch. Abram Wilson Quartet Performs Philippa ’Truly astonishing...A fiery, colourful trumpeter and a gracefully cajoling soul singer, Wilson is a definite hot ticket.’ The Guardian Multi-award winning New Orleans trumpeter, vocalist and composer Abram Wilson, is one of the leading jazz musicians in the UK today. With trumpet playing reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, and Wynton Marsalis and the vocals of Sammy Davis Jr. and Chet Baker, Wilson has created a unique and captivating style of melodic compositions that swing and groove. Philippa is a collection of original music composed by Wilson ranging from blues to melodic swing and stunning vocals. The project was inspired by the life of the brilliant but neglected mixed race classical pianist Philippa Schuyler. Born in Harlem in 1931, her fascinating, illustrious, tragically short life captured America’s tensions at a crucial period in its history.

Efterklang & Northern Sinfonia The Piramida Concert
André de Ridder conductor
‘Like a secret musical language born of ice winds and sequestered myth’ Mojo ‘Prepare to be left breathless’ BBC Music Denmark’s orchestral-indie experimentalists team up with one of Britain’s most exciting classical ensembles for an adventurous new live collaboration. From the release of their fulllength debut album Tripper back in 2004, Efterklang have blazed a unique trail of innovative indiechamber-pop and Nordic post-rock. Now Copenhagen’s pioneering collective takes to the stage with the 35-piece Northern Sinfonia, and assembled guests. Together they conjure an extraordinary new sound world, inspired by a recent band expeditionand created with the help of classical arrangers Missy Mazzoli (Kronos Quartet, Victoire), Karsten Fundal (Under Byen, Oh Land) and Daníel Bjarnason (SigurRós, Múm).

Batsheva Ensemble
Don McLean
Deca Dance
40th Anniversary Tour
‘In Ohad Naharin’s unmistakable choreography, wild impulses of energy – ecstatic, angry, artless – are sent hurtling through classically shaped phrases of dance.’ The Guardian
Don McLean is one of America’s most enduring singer-songwriters and is forever associated with his classic hits American Pie and Vincent (Starry Starry Night).
In their first ever visit to the UK, the younger wing of Tel Aviv’s world-class company performs a 21st-century remix of dance milestones from across the group’s extensive repertoire. Led by choreographic supremo Ohad Naharin, Batsheva Dance Company is a major force on the global dance scene. Brighton Dome and Festival Resident Artist Hofesh Shechter has both danced with the company and worked with Naharin. Here the ensemble of young international dancers present a collage of major moments and audience favourites from Naharin’s key creations over the last 20 years, performed to a sensational musical score from Goldfrapp to Vivaldi.
Since first hitting the charts in 1971, Don has amassed over 40 gold and platinum records world-wide and, in 2004, was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. His songs have been recorded by artists from every musical genre, most notably Madonna’s No. 1 recording of American Pie in 2000 and George Michael’s version of The Grave in 2003, sung in protest at the Iraq War. Celebrate 40 years of great songwriting with an American legend.
