Spring January–April 2013
We are the south coast’s premier multi-arts venue, hosting over 600 events each year across music, dance, theatre, comedy and more. brightondome.org 01273 709709
Welcome
Here at Brighton Dome, we head into 2013 doing what we do best – presenting the finest music, dance and theatre across our three venues. This spring, amongst many inspirational events, we take on that rascal Cupid with a miniseason celebrating the ups and downs of love with Heartfelt (p4-7). As we start to gear up for Brighton Festival in May, why not use the spring season to try something new.
Music p16 Whether you like your music classical or just plain classic, there’s a wide range on offer. Legends Richard Thompson and Loudon Wainwright III show the young ones how it’s done, whilst you can expect an otherworldy experience with unique performer Seaming To. Ludovico Einaudi crosses the divide into classical with his beautiful compositions and we have exciting programmes from Bournemouth Symphony, Brighton Philharmonic and London Philharmonic Orchestras as well as our Coffee Concert chamber music series.
2
Dance p8 The new generation of dance is well represented this season as the BalletBoyz bring their talent and athleticism onto our Concert Hall stage, whilst acclaimed Brighton choreographer Ben Wright returns with his company of young dancers, bgroup. Plus, the grande dames of ballet ‘The Trocks’ display a perfect pointe and a perfect pout in the most entertaining dance show you will see this year.

A celebratory gem of a performance with great music, dancing and handbags. In an empty space, a caretaker sweeps away the remnants of a previous event. A young woman enters and puts down her handbag. A beat begins, a mirror ball turns and the sound of a classic dance track fills the air... ‘A witty and wistful performance that, in a few delirious moments, succinctly makes the point that no woman needs a man when she has got her handbag in tow.’ Lyn Gardner, The Guardian If you would like to participate in the performance (men and women) please visit brightondome.org/heartfelt for information. This special pre-Valentine’s Day concert features the Prelude and Liebestode from Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde and two works by Ernst Bruch – his lushly romantic Concerto for Viola and Clarinet, and heartrending short Romance for Viola. Frenchman Saint-Saëns’ passionate Concerto for Cello then precedes the ritual dances of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, first performed in Paris a century ago for Diaghilev’s innovative Ballets Russes.
Bach’s famous Concerto for Two Violins became Yehudi Menuhin’s signature tune. So, it is appropriate that two young violinists from his school will perform the third double concerto of this special season.
