The Land of Yes and The Land of No In his first work for his own company since becoming Artistic Director at Sydney Dance Company, Bonachela delves into the world of signs and symbols that rule our everyday lives and spark our hidden memories. He explores the power of imagination and the body’s ability to give physical shape to memory, experience and emotions. Inspired by popular culture and committed to innovation, Rafael Bonachela has taken contemporary dance into dramatic new territory, working alongside film directors (John Maybury), rock stars (the Kills, Primal Scream), pop icons (Kylie) and theatre-makers (Jude Kelly’s Carmen Jones). With music by Ezio Bosso (BalletBoyz) and sets by film designer Alan Macdonald (The Queen; Cheri), The Land of Yes and the Land of No is testament to this collaborative spirit.

If you had one last dance, what shape would it take? A still dance? A silent dance? A song? A joke? A tearjerker? This intriguing proposal is the guiding principle behind the latest dance theatre production from leading UK company Vincent Dance Theatre.
Brighton-based, Jerwood award-winning dancer/choreographer (Richard Alston, Ricochet) Ben Wright is back with a brand new show. His contemporary dance ensemble bgroup made its Brighton debut in 2008 with the ‘Time Out Critic's Choice’ dance triple bill The Diminishing Present.
An exceptional ensemble of multitasking performers and musicians responds to this question in a series of individual acts that lay bare the very mechanics of theatre. Together they morph words into movement, shunt gesture into sound and even burst into song to create a performance they can believe in.

After sell-out shows across the world, Wayne McGregor | Random Dance returns to the UK for an extended run of its international dance sensation Entity. Performed against a pounding soundscape by Jon Hopkins (Cold Play, Massive Attack) and Joby Talbot (The Divine Comedy), Entity is a staggering blend of bodies, lights, technology and film. A prolific dance maker, and winner of the South Bank Show Award 2009, McGregor's recent commissions include new work for The Royal Ballet (where he is Resident Choreographer), NDT and The Australian Ballet. He has also directed opera at The Royal Opera House and produced headlining sets for the Big Chill and Glastonbury. The ever-popular Joan Baez returns to Brighton Dome on the eve of her 24th studio album release. After headlining last year's Glastonbury acoustic stage and selling out the Albert Hall, Joan Baez is touring once more.
An extraordinary 13-piece line-up of Buena Vista Social Club stalwarts invites you on an unforgettable musical excursion from the original 1996 Buena Vista recordings to the present day.
Plus Clara and the Real Lowdown Anglo-Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas returns to her roots for a live performance of her debut acoustic project Ana Hina. Natacha Atlas first found fame alongside Jah Wobble, co-writing his Mercury-nominated album Rising Above Bedlam. She cemented this reputation as lead singer with Transglobal Underground whose fusion of electronic beats with Arabic music would foreground her own solo career. Her eight studio albums have embraced rap, drum n’ bass, R&B, Hindi pop and even French chanson. Now, with the Mazeeka Ensemble (an awesome global mix of strings, flute, oud, percussion and accordian) at her side, Atlas explores a more traditional roots world, revisiting her Middle Eastern heritage to uncover a rich musical seam.
Baez has always been a consummate interpreter of other artists’ material. Day After Tomorrow is a selection of songs written by some of her favourite songwriters including Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Patty Griffin and Steve Earle (who also produced the album). Recorded in Nashville with an all-star, allacoustic Music City ensemble (from Tim O'Brien and Viktor Krauss to Earle himself), it marks 50 years at the forefront of American music.
Featuring Grammy-nominated Guajiro Mirabal (trumpet); Jesús 'Aguaje' Ramos (trombone); Grammywinning guitarist Manual Galbán and Barbarito Torres (12-string lute), plus a blistering Havana backline. Together they present some of the finest Cuban music ever made.

Calvin Harris plus support from Mr Hudson From DIY disco pop to anthemic 'stadium dance', Calvin Harris has become the poster boy of the MySpace generation. The Scottish songwriter, remixer and producer traded in the bedsitting room for the big time with his major label 2007 debut I Created Disco. It spawned the Top 10 singles Acceptable in the 80s and The Girls. He has since been courted by everyone from Kylie Minogue and Groove Armada to Dizzee Rascal.

Ralph McTell
Ralph McTell was pitched headlong into the limelight four decades ago with his now ubiquitous folk anthem Streets of London. The song earned him an Ivor Novello award and launched his career. Sell-out tours on both sides of the Atlantic followed including the first British solo act to pack out the Royal Albert Hall in 14 years. In 1993 Nancy Griffith covered his From Clare to Here on her Grammy-winning Other Voices album, and in 2002 he won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. With wry humour, astute observation and sublime musicality, McTell remains a key figure on the British music scene.

Ojos de Brujo Plus Mexican Institute of Sound Catalonian nu-flamenco ensemble Ojos de Brujo returns to the UK for its first live shows since 2007. Barcelona's global music collective has been kicking up a sound storm of hip-hop, raga, funk, rumba and gypsy flamenco for almost two decades. In a rare UK visit, Grammy-winning Romanian concert pianist Radu Lupu takes to the Brighton Dome stage for an intimate solo recital. Lupu is one of the foremost pianists of his generation. He is also a peerless interpreter of the Austro-German tradition, reflected in tonight's programme. Beethoven's posthumously christened ‘Appassionata’ was composed in 1804. Since then, the ‘titanic’ and technically demanding four-movement sonata has been the subject of some suitably potent mythmaking; not least, Lenin's alleged crisis of revolutionary faith on beholding this 'wonderfully ethereal music'. Overshadowed by the spectre of death (the composer passed away soon after its completion) and by the weight of Beethoven's own legacy in the form, Schubert’s Sonata No. 20 in A Major (the second in his trilogy of ‘late sonatas’) is informed by a melancholic introspection. In similarly solipsistic mood, the last of Janacek's mature piano cycles, In the Mist (1913) – which opens this concert – is an intimate confession of a profoundly personal anguish.

Whilst music is often historic and partisan, some works become favourites simply for their unadulterated beauty. Such is Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. It may be many things to many people, but its effect was captured in one now-immortal description. ‘Every time I hear it, I go to pieces,’ says Marilyn Monroe’s character in The Seven Year Itch. ‘It shakes me, it quakes me. It makes me feel goosepimply all over!’.
Johannes Brahms had a habit of making promises he found hard to keep. Chief amongst them was his declaration in 1872 that he’d ‘never write a symphony’. Sure enough, and despite the thuds of Beethoven’s epoch-making footsteps still ringing in his ears, Brahms eventually proved himself spectacularly wrong. When the composer’s First Symphony finally arrived, it certainly made an entrance – launching with a turbulent, energetic face-off between pounding drums, defiant strings and ominous woodwinds.

A veritable feast of Russian music, the concert opens with Borodin, a member of the Mighty Handful, promoting a strong national flavour with his melodic invention. Our soloist in the much-loved Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto is Bulgarian superstar Vasko Vassilev, former student of the Moscow Conservatoire, who came to study in London at eighteen and rapidly became one of the modern legends of the violin. Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony was written in 1907 a full ten years after the catastrophic premiere of the first. It formed part of the intensely productive period heralded by the Rachmaninovs’ move to Dresden and was an immediate success. It remains an audience favourite.
The second concert of the season features the unusual Mendelssohn ‘double concerto’, an early work from this prodigious composing talent played by the acclaimed British/Russian duo of Min-Jung Kym and Sergey Levitin who had such success with their Wigmore Hall recital last season. This concert also sees the start of our At 50 series where we have invited three composers who are fifty this season to suggest one of their own pieces for our programme. The composers are Martin Butler, Jonathan Dove and Orlando Gough, all of whom live or have connections in Sussex.
BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1984, Emma Johnson has gone on to become one of the most recognised musicians of her generation. She has devised this programme around the commission and world premiere of Will Todd’s new clarinet concerto – written for her with an added jazz spice in the mix – but also including the ever-popular Mozart concerto. The 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death is marked with The Miracle symphony and the programme concludes with the Gypsy and hussar inspired Dances of Galanta – a controlled explosion of quasi-improvisational virtuosity.

A concert for children of all ages featuring a wealth of famous characters from children’s literature. Harry Potter, the Snowman, the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Nutcracker and the Mouse King lead us through magical kingdoms of musical enchantment where seemingly impossible feats of flying and derring-do become commonplace. Spells, battles, sweets, spices, snow, and loyal friends are found and made. In the midst of the childhood fantasies, the music is evocative and memorable. A work each from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, it should ensure you leave humming your favourite.
We continue our five year series of Beethoven symphonies with the penultimate eighth – a lyrical, melodic work that looks forward to the compositions of the Romantic period. Rafal, BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1996, and Thomas, BBC Young Musician of The Year string finalist 1992, met while studying at the Yehudi Menuhin School, before heading to Austria to continue their studies with Gerhard Schulz and Heinrich Schiff respectively. Inspired by Awakenings by Oliver Sacks MD, A Kind of Alaska evokes a suitably icy desolation. Set on a shiny red London bus, Jumping Mouse is a full throttle adventure for children.
The Horseplay stable is a magical interactive space packed with horse-themed treasures to support children's imaginative play. The children enter the stable where Helen Day (Hoof!) kicks off the creative fun with her special ‘pony-tale’. The children can move about, play, build dens, groom the horse puppet or simply investigate their surroundings. With the aid of light, sound, props, and saddle-bags of creative exploration, their ‘free play’ becomes the performance.
Having boldly taken Laika the dog into space (Muttnik), one-woman theatre innovator Niki McCretton canters into view with tap-dancing hooves, an inch high cowboy guy, some movie screen magic and on-thehoof adventures into the wild, wild West!
While the horseplay unfolds, delighted parents/carers can watch the action from a safe distance before joining the children to share their discoveries.

30th Anniversary tour Re-live the sights and sounds of sixties as the world’s premier Beatle band returns to Brighton with their spectacular two hour multi-media stage production featuring all the classic Beatle hits. Way To Blue The Songs of Nick Drake One of the most influential singersongwriters of our age, Nick Drake found little mainstream success during his lifetime; however, since his untimely death at the age of 26, his fragile, autumnal music has touched the hearts of millions. This very special evening, curated by Nick's producer Joe Boyd, features Danny Thompson – the legendary bassist who played on many of Drake’s recordings – anchoring a stellar house band along with a sublime line-up of special guest artists to be announced. Gazing from the window of his beloved home in the Finnish countryside, Jean Sibelius glimpsed a group of swans taking flight. The First World War was tearing Europe to pieces, and Sibelius was visited still by illness and depression. Into the bleak landscape of his forlorn existence the swans thrust a sudden light and optimism: Sibelius wrote glowingly of the swans before capturing them musically in the last movement of his Fifth Symphony with a beautiful, hopeful motif that soars inspiringly upwards from within the orchestra, free from its creator’s earthly concerns.

Standing events Hearing impaired customers The Pavilion Theatre and Corn Exchange are fitted with induction loops. There is a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system in the Concert Hall which can be used with or without a hearing aid. Please reserve your unit when you book your tickets. Visually impaired customers Guide dogs are welcome in all Brighton Dome venues. Printed materials are available in large print format from the Marketing Department on 01273 260825.
Unreserved tickets for standing rock & pop events will be posted in advance via recorded delivery for £2.40 plus transaction fee. Tickets can also be collected on the night of the event 30 mins prior to the performance. Door times Doors open 30 minutes before standing events and 45 minutes before seated events. Please note that latecomers may not be admitted to the auditorium until a suitable break in the performance and that some performances may not contain suitable breaks. Please check door times and latecomer information with the Ticket Office when you book.

Under 14s With the exception of events specifically aimed at younger people, under-14s coming to see a show will not be allowed into the venues without a ticket-holding adult. Age limits for children’s shows are determined on an event by event basis.

Car Park Offers The nearest car park to Brighton Dome is the Church Street Theatre Car Park. Ticketholders can save 25% on charges from 6pm to midnight*. Simply validate your car park ticket at the venue. The Lanes car park on Black Lion St, accessed from Grand Junction Road on the seafront, is a five minute walk to the venue and charges just £3 to park from 6pm to midnight. *Full price car park charges at time of going to press are £3.20 per hour
