Brighton Dome Tea Dance
an evening of new work from the dancers of Hofesh Shechter Company
by Samuel Beckett
with the Footloose Dance Orchestra
This special showcase presents five brand new works commissioned by Brighton Dome and choreographed by a quintet of exceptional young dancers from the internationally acclaimed Hofesh Shechter Company. Maëva Berthelot, Chien-Ming Chang, Philip Hulford, Jason Jacobs and Sita Ostheimer hail from France, Taiwan, UK, USA and Germany respectively, and all are currently touring in Hofesh Shechter’s work worldwide. Here they reveal their own choreographic voices, working with live music, text and visuals in a bold and exhilarating programme.
Take time out from the hurly-burly as the Footloose Dance Orchestra transports you back to the elegant age of the 1920s and 30s. The 15-piece band will keep you on your toes as you twirl around the glorious Brighton Dome Corn Exchange to the jazz-age swing of the foxtrot, the timeless romance of the waltz and the Latin lilt of the tango and rumba.
Performed by Conor Lovett Directed by Judy Hegarty Lovett Following last autumn’s production of The End at Brighton Dome, Conor Lovett – arguably the greatest Beckett actor of our age – performs another one-man tour de force in this arresting stage adaptation of the Nobel Laureate’s early short prose masterpiece.
Ballroom workshop Boost your dancing confidence and learn all the right moves – from the lively paso doble to slow waltzes – with this professional dance teacher. Perfect accompaniment to the Brighton Dome Tea Dance.
Hofesh Shechter Company is one of the most exciting and dynamic ensembles in contemporary dance today. Its key works include the incendiary double bill In your rooms/Uprising; The Art of Not Looking Back (a 2009 Brighton Festival commission); and Political Mother (premiered at Brighton Festival 2010).
Filled with the author’s distinctive black humour and plotted with consummate Beckettian perversity, First Love tells the story of a young man, expelled from the family home who takes refuge on a bench by a canal. There he meets a woman who takes him home, with comically disastrous consequences. Gare Saint Lazare Players have toured internationally with their critically acclaimed presentations of Beckett’s prose works. Their precise and elegant work has made Beckett accessible to a whole new audience and earned the company an enviable reputation around the world.

Julian Sands stars in
A Celebration of Harold Pinter
Directed by John Malkovich
When illness prevented Harold Pinter from performing his own poems at a London benefit in 2007 he asked Julian Sands to take over. This intimate celebration draws from Pinter’s poems and political prose. Combined with anecdotes and stories, Sands explores how Pinter’s poetry - rather than his plays - delivers a profound insight into his literary legacy. “Julian Sands does wonders for Harold Pinter’s poems by reading them as if they were plays. His approach is the very opposite of po-faced and reverent, and the result is a revelation - far funnier and livelier than so many misguided productions of the plays.” David Hare Sands is directed by legendary American actor, director and producer John Malkovich

Idle Motion
The Confetti Maker is a highly visual, absurdly comic one-man show from the irrepressible Frank Wurzinger, consummate modern-day clown and star of Finger in the Pie’s acclaimed Sweeney Todd (Time Out Critics Choice). Directed by John Wright (of Told by an Idiot fame), this charming and delightfully eccentric production combines slapstick, puppetry, surreal storytelling and, of course, lots of small bits of paper, expertly woven into a hilarious yet poignant physical theatre experience.
The Paper Cinema
‘A little jewel of a show...It loves its audience, and in return its audience loves it – the entire performance is punctuated by little gasps of pleasure. ’ The Guardian This Edinburgh Fringe sell-out show from Total Theatre Award nominees Idle Motion gives wing to aviation past and present. Using luggage, maps, paper airplanes and heaps of ingenuity, it transports us to the roaring twenties and the pioneers of aviation when our dreams took flight and we began to carve our way through silent skies.
‘Paper Cinema create intricate, hand-drawn, black-and-white cut-out figures and scenes, which are then projected on to a screen. It’s so lo-fi it’s practically Victorian, and it has the make-do dash of nursery entertainment for grown-ups. Which is all part of the charm.’ Lyn Gardner, The Guardian Around pillars of the old quarry, an old man searches the mysteries of the rocks... he hears their calling. What have they seen, what are the stories that can be sung by these weather-blown sentinels, unwrapping geological time, exploring the layers of rock?
Festival Events Meanwhile, the modern story of a woman on a journey to discover her own past emerges, as she travels through the crowded airports of our world to another, resting high above the clouds.

Herbie Flowers Jazz Breakfast
Soweto Gospel Choir
For some five decades Toots and the Maytals have been shaping the landscape of Jamaican music.
Soothe away the troubles of the week and kick-back to some top-flight jazz music with celebrated bassist Herbie Flowers and friends at these regular jazz breakfasts.
Following its last visit to Brighton Dome back in 2009, South Africa’s two-time Grammy winning a cappella choir is back, bringing its rich harmonies, exuberant arrangements and spontaneous energy to an all-new show – African Grace.
After recording their debut album with the legendary Skatalites in 1964 Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert and his trio (the Maytals) cut a string of classic albums and international hits from Pressure Drop (featured in Jimmy Cliff’s seminal 1972 film The Harder They Come) to the ubiquitous Monkey Man (covered by The Specials on their 1979 debut album).
With the Sunday papers, tasty food and a free coffee or tea on arrival – plus an ever-changing line-up of jazz masters from across the UK – breakfast-time just got a whole lot more appetising. Herbie’s jazz breakfasts have become something of an institution across Sussex so book early or settle for the blues!
Their enduring sound – a unique combination of closeharmony singing, ska, soul, reggae and rock – has served them well into the new millennium with a Grammy win for 2005’s True Love, big name tours with the Rolling Stones and Sheryl Crow, and a whole new generation of artists revisiting their music – from Amy Winehouse to Sublime.

Seven Angels
The Opera Group and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group Music by Luke Bedford Words by Glyn Maxwell ‘One of the most outstanding pieces by any young composer I’ve ever experienced.’ The Guardian on Luke Bedford’s Or Voit Tout en Aventure Seven angels have fallen through space and time for so long, they have forgotten why. Coming to rest on a desert, they imagine the creation of a legendary garden that once flourished there and its destruction from greed and neglect.
London Philharmonic Orchestra Tchaikovsky Dvořák
Seven Angels is the much anticipated first opera from Luke Bedford, one of the UK’s leading young composers, with words by Glyn Maxwell (After Troy; Liberty). Featuring a live chamber orchestra this moving and magical production interprets the themes of Milton’s Paradise Lost for an audience facing the challenges of a changing climate.
Sitkovetsky conductor Yan Levionnois cello As Dvořák laboured over his new Cello Concerto in 1895, a woman he once loved lay dying. The composer couldn’t speak fully of his affection, for that woman was his sister-in-law Josefina. Instead Dvořák took the tune of her favourite song and cast it as the yearning second theme of the Concerto’s slow movement. When Josefina died months later, he re-wrote the movement’s ending – bidding it goodbye with a touching final reference to the song. Such pain Tchaikovsky knew so well. But in the fiery excitement and icicle-clear melodies of his early First Symphony, there was only optimism.

The organisers’ aim is to connect disabled and non-disabled artists with each other and their city and for everyone to experience and enjoy art. Come to the opening night, grab a drink, and view the art on display; check out the live dubist and chat to the artists. Or visit the exhibition during opening times (see below).

Shaun Parker & Company Happy as Larry
‘Happy as Larry is brilliantly choreographed, flawlessly and joyously performed, and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. I literally sat on the edge of my seat.’ Australian Stage What makes us happy? This funny, playful and poignant new dance show investigates the elusive nature of human happiness. Created by award-winning Australian choreographer Shaun Parker (‘Parker is a genius’– Daily Telegraph), this powerful performance combines an intoxicating mix of ballet, break-dance, roller-skating and highly physical contemporary dance. Brimming with Parker’s insightful creativity and set to a vibrant electro/acoustic score, this innovative and moving dance work brings fun and danger to the fore.
Tindersticks A night of music and film performing Clare Denis film scores 1996-2009 For 15 years French filmmaker Claire Denis and British band Tindersticks have engaged in an inspired and fruitful collaboration. This show sees Tindersticks perform live to a meticulously prepared montage of scenes from six Denis films: Nénette et Boni, Trouble Every Day, Friday Night, The Intruder, 35 Shots of Rum and White Material. Denis’s singular projected images accompany the band’s live dark-hued music – a gorgeous soundscape of symphonic colour, otherworldly percussion and the inimitable smoky baritone of Tindersticks’ frontman Stuart Staples. A perfect combination of visionary cinema and a unique sound.
