Past Times at Brighton Dome
Brighton Dome has had plenty of Open Days but now you can visit this unique building six days of the week. Open from Tuesday – Sunday,10am until 5pm, the Foyer Bar serves tea, coffee, soft drinks and delicious cakes.
Over its 200-year history, Brighton Dome has had many guises. Inspired by the Corn Exchange in Paris this remarkable building adjacent to the Royal Pavilion was built as the Prince Regent’s riding stables in 1805. Since then it has been used as a field hospital in the First World War, a concert hall, a roller rink and, now, a state-of-the-art entertainment venue.
It’s a great space to spend time in; skylights let the sunshine flood in, wifi and tabled seating makes it a practical venue for informal meetings; and comfy chairs and low tables make a relaxed setting for having tea and cake. The Foyer Bar is directly linked with the Museum and Art Gallery so you can amble between the two and soak up the atmosphere of these special venues.
The building itself has a lot of stories to tell but we need your help to compile a comprehensive history of Brighton Dome. Perhaps your family had connections with the venue during the war, maybe you were a regular at Douglas Reeves’ famous organ concerts. You may have seen ABBA win Eurovision in 1974 or been in the audience when Pink Floyd played Dark Side of the Moon for the first time. Have you been on stage at Brighton Dome? Did you meet your partner there? Whatever your connection with the building, we’d like to hear from you. Vertical Road music by Nitin Sawhney Akram Khan makes a welcome return to Brighton Dome with his latest full scale contemporary ensemble work, Vertical Road.
Visually inspiring and spiritually profound, Vertical Road draws on each performer’s cultural interpretation of the human odyssey.
For this project Khan has assembled a truly international cast of performers and artists from across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. With a specially commissioned score by long-term collaborator Nitin Sawhney, the work takes inspiration from universal myths of angels that symbolise 'ascension' – the road between the earthly and the spiritual, the Vertical Road.
Akram Khan is one of the UK's most celebrated dance talents. His choreography – 'flawless, gutsy and a joy to behold' (Time Out Sydney) – includes acclaimed collaborations with Sidi Larbi (Brighton Dome, 2006), National Ballet of China (Brighton Festival, 2008), Juliette Binoche, Sylvie Guillem, Anish Kapoor and Hanif Kureshi.

Henri Oguike – ‘one of the brightest hopes of British contemporary dance' (Daily Telegraph) – presents a stunning new triple bill and a hand-picked quintet of world-class dancers. Intense and unusual, yet shot through with trademark playfulness, Freq is a surprising solo piece played out to the music of Chopin. Point of Contact is classic Oguike: sensuality, beauty and sublime movement underscored by Bach’s lyrical suites for solo cello. Butterfly Dreaming is a full Company work inspired by the Far East and set to Tan Dun’s dramatic Ghost Opera recorded by the Kronos Quartet. Crafted on ChuangTzu’s famous philosophical conundrum, ‘the butterfly dream’, it takes wing on a flight of fantasy, exploring the boundaries between the real and imagined. Paco Peña’s Flamenco Sin Fronteras Virtuoso musicianship and dance combine with passion and intensity in Paco Peña’s spectacular Flamenco Sin Fronteras. Paco Peña is one of the world’s leading exponents of flamenco. For his latest show he brings together an ensemble cast of sensational dancers, singers and musicians alongside special guests from Venezuela. Together they revisit an often overlooked part of the flamenco repertoire. Flamenco Sin Fronteras explores a musical fusion that occurred at the turn of the twentieth century – when touring Spanish musicians discovered a rich South American musical culture that resonated strongly with their own. Flamenco Sin Fronteras draws deeply on these historical and cultural connections between Latin America, Andalucia and Spain. The result is a feast for the ears and eyes – a one-way winter ticket to the heat, passion, pathos and joy of this archetypal art form.

African Night Fever marks the launch of Black History Month with a festival of music, dance, film and food from the African diasporas and beyond. Heading up a packed programme of performers, artists and musicians is Ghanaian percussion legend Nana Tsiboe. Nana made his name sharing the 60s civil rights stage with Martin Luther King, Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, no less. Since then he's worked with the likes of Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone and Oumou Sangare. His own simmering fusion of Ghanaian palm wine music and modern African Highlife is guaranteed to give your feet a workout!
When Gilad Atzmon stepped into the mighty Bird's shoes for his 'with strings' homage to Charlie Parker last year, it was ‘…as perfect a jazz marriage as you could wish for…’ (Independent on Sunday). The result was the ubiquitously praised album In Loving Memory of America and a live collaboration between his own Orient House Ensemble and the Sigamos String Quartet. Now, the mercurial bandleader, saxophonist and composer is back on the road with the same sublime lineup, revisiting Parker's landmark Verve recordings alongside Atzmon classics and specially composed originals.
Chrome Hoof aren’t a band to be pigeonholed. The (at last count) eleven-strong tour de force take genre-trashing to a whole new level, effortlessly deconstructing a wide range of styles, spanning prog, disco, electronica and riff-laden metal. Lola Olafisoye – their bewitching frontwoman – delves into a magical world of cosmic rock while the band charge through their hyperactive sonic exercises and visuallyspectacular theatrics.
With a host of other bands and ANF DJs in the mix, African Night Fever is a joyous celebration of the rich and varied cultures of a continent.
Fusing fiery bebop artistry with Middle Eastern roots, Gilad Atzmon is one of the most distinctive jazzmen on the international scene. The musicians of the Sigamos String Quartet have worked with everyone from F-ire Collective to the London Chamber Orchestra.

Alex Wilson’s Mali Latino Pianist, arranger, composer and band leader Alex Wilson presents Mali Latino, a thrilling Afro-Latin music collaboration with Malian kora master Madou Sidiki Diabaté (brother of Toumani). Born out of an earlier encounter (for the 2004 track Remercier les travailleurs) and an Aldeburgh Music residency, Mali Latino is a rare moment of musical alchemy: a collision of two distinct styles and traditions that sparks a genuinely new sound. In anticipation of the imminent album release, Alex Wilson now takes Mali Latino on the road. With Alex, Madou and Malian percussion virtuoso Ahmed Fofana heading up a sensational nine-piece band (including trumpet, trombone and full Latin percussion section), this cross-cultural music adventure delivers a rich mix of Latin dance patterns and driving West African rhythms.

Hugh Masekela and The Mahotella Queens Two living legends of the 'rainbow nation' unite for an historic musical encounter. Hugh Masekela’s soaring trumpet sound and upbeat mix of jazz, funk and Afro-pop has provided the soundtrack to South Africa for four decades – from struggle and exile to liberation. His career has spanned jazz milestones and pop hits like Grazin in the Grass (1968) to seminal collaborations such as the 1987 Graceland tour with Paul Simon. Today his fire burns as ferociously as ever, brimming with energy and optimism, as witnessed in the opening concert of World Cup 2010. Here he performs with his full band in a rare UK visit. Award-winning vocal harmony trio The Mahotella Queens have exerted enormous influence on the musical life of South Africa. For over 40 years they've been integral to the fusion of traditional South African song with blues, soul and gospel – embodying the indomitable spirit of the classic township style. Soweto Kinch The New Emancipation A MOBO award-winner and Mercury Prize nominee, Soweto Kinch is a mercurial figure in British music; splicing muscular post-bop alto sax with erudite rap, he’s taken jazz out to the hip-hop crowd and back again… His latest project – The New Emancipation – draws inspiration from 19th-century work songs and early blues, and traces modern resonances through debt/wage slavery and creative oppression to postObama optimism. Here Kinch explores this rich musical inheritance with a stellar jazz ensemble and modern hip-hop production. The result is a new chapter in the emancipation story: a musical celebration of the 'endurance and resilience of the human spirit'.

Brighton Ukulele Day featuring The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
Acoustic Ladyland with support from Grasscut Alt-jazz ‘noisniks’ Acoustic Ladyland grew out of London’s groundbreaking F-ire Collective almost a decade ago. Alongside musical co-conspirators Polar Bear, they’ve been patrolling the outer reaches of jazz and avant rock ever since. The band’s first album Camouflage (2004) gave Hendrix a 21st-century acoustic makeover. The follow-up – Last Chance Disco (2005) – was Jazzwise album of the year and brought in its wake the BBC Jazz Best Band 05 accolade. Its latest – 2009’s Living With a Tiger – is another blast of shock and awe power and euphoric jazz grooves, served up with trademark precision and edge-of-the-seat intensity. Four Tet + support Hot on the heels of his latest studio album There is Love in You, Four Tet (aka Kieran Hebden) brings is distinctive brand of homespun electronica to Brighton Dome. Hebden cut his teeth with post-rock trio Fridge before taking his solo detour into the hip-hop and electronica arena. His muted balance of organic and programmed sounds – spanning free jazz to the margins of folktronica – has since graced five albums, a host of collaborations, DJ dates and classic remixes. Presented by Melting Vinyl. Mercury-nominated British Indie rock quintet Foals perfected their pop-savvy mix of anthemic rock, shimmering beats and post-punk sound playing house parties in and around their student stomping ground, Oxford. Their debut album Antidotes (2008) caused a major buzz on the UK scene. Heaven 17 To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their seminal album, Heaven 17 perform Penthouse and Pavement live. Heaven 17 grew out of experimental collective British Electric Foundation (BEF) in the late 1970s. Dvořák and Saint-Saëns were two of the most naturally inspired musicians in history. So overwhelmed was Dvořák with ideas for his Eighth Symphony, he confided to a friend, that he hadn’t time to put them down on paper. The resulting piece radiates the joy of such creative rapture – blossoming outwards into luxurious colours and textures with confidence and charm. Saint-Saëns could conjure great music from the smallest spark of an idea. From a short theme by his pupil Fauré he fashioned the striking first movement of his most cherished piano concerto, and with it, music full of luminous poetry and potent spirit. This concert spotlights 20-year-old Uzbek soloist Behzod Abduraimov, Grand Prize winner at the London International Piano Competition 2009.
For the last two years of his life, Anton Bruckner laboured over the final movement of his Ninth Symphony. He never finished it. He died, tragically, mid-composition, as he leant over the symphony’s incomplete score. But as life was leaving Bruckner, vision and faith were only strengthening in him. His completed movements carry extraordinary weight in their cinematic colours and tectonic harmonies. Finally, as the third movement adagio nears its conclusion, the music seems to ascend heavenward, revolving timelessly around its found harmonies. ‘Art had its beginning in God’, believed Bruckner, ‘and so it must lead back to God.’ The concert also includes Mozart's well-loved Piano Concerto No. 25, performed by distinguished Swiss pianist Andreas Haefliger, an internationally acclaimed recitalist and chamber musician.

String Quartet String Quartet in G minor, Op.10 Concertino for String Quartet String Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80
The string quartet is arguably the greatest of all challenges for ensemble composition. Samuel Barber and Debussy only tackled the form once – the former producing one of the best-loved and most recorded adagios in the contemporary repertoire; the latter revolutionizing the genre with dramatic new textures and tonal forms. When, half a century earlier, Mendelssohn wrote his Opus 80 Quartet – a moving lament for his beloved sister – it was his first in over a decade. It was also, tragically, his last, completed only months before his own premature death in 1847. The Heath Quartet was formed in 2002 at the RNCM under Dr Christopher Rowland. Selected by YCAT in 2008, they won first prize and the Audience Prize at the Tromp International Competition in Eindhoven and second prize at the Haydn International Competition in Vienna. Earlier this year they made their Brighton Festival debut and recorded their first CD.

BPO’s 2010 season opens with a long overdue visit to Wagner in one of his most enjoyable and grand overtures. Then the orchestra marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt with his wellknown First Piano Concerto and the almost unknown Totentanz, a paraphrase of the Dies Irae with late romantic and gothic overtones. The Dies Irae also features in the Symphonic Dances of Rachmaninov, the composer’s last work, written in America. The ecclesiastical chants, unusual sonorities and rhythmic vitality of the three movements evoke memories of a Russia long gone. BPO favourite and serving president John Lill has guested more than any other artist since the fifties. Here he makes a welcome return as concert soloist. The second concert of the season features works linked by each composer’s expression of their native folk traditions viewed both from home and away. Let your imagination wander through the expansive melodies of Dvořák’s New World, do battle in Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King (written for Ibsen's Peer Gynt) and marvel at the wit and invention of Carl August Nielsen’s Nordic tone world. This is the BPO’s ‘Children’s Concert’, introducing young ears to some of the most evocative music in the repertoire. There will be an ‘open’ rehearsal and a question and answer session with Christine, Barry and other members of the orchestra for Friends and young guests alike.
A concert of contemplative, nostalgic and stirring music for Remembrance Sunday. The programme makes a link with and pays tribute to all those who gave so much in two World Wars and in other conflicts. The concert is not all elegiac though; there are many joyful and sparky moments particularly in the Walton and Elgar and a range of diverse musical traditions represented in the Fauré, Butterworth and Bruch. Perhaps the biggest treat, though, is to hear live, the Enigma Variations including the well known and supremely moving Nimrod.

Concerto Grosso in G minor (‘Christmas Concerto’) Richard Rodney Bennett Four American Carols (World Première) Serenade Op. 22 in E major Dvořák A concert celebrating the start of the festive season. Sir Richard Rodney Bennett is an English composer perhaps best known for his film scores (Murder on the Orient Express, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and his love of jazz. Here, he creates and sets carols from his homeland and his adoptive USA. These settings are partnered with two lively and uplifting classics of the string repertoire – Corelli’s energetic baroque classic, the ever popular ‘Christmas Concerto’; and Dvořák’s elegant Serenade, allegedly written in two weeks, in the same year as the Fifth Symphony, String Quintet No. 2 and opera Vanda.

‘The Hebrides’ (Fingal's Cave) Piano Concerto in A minor Symphony No. 4 in F minor
Mendelssohn’s stormy classic 'The Hebrides’ – a stirring evocation of the grandeur of nature in the Scottish Islands – opens this concert featuring guest conductor and soloist Howard Shelley. Howard undertakes both roles in the Schumann piano concerto, performed here in this, the composer's 200th anniversary year. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony – a meditation on fate, denial and the serenity of dreams – was written under the patronage of Nadezda von Meck, a prolific partnership that also produced the Fifth Symphony, the Violin Concerto and Eugene Onegin.

The end of year festivities just wouldn’t be the same without the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s traditional Viennese Concert. This year it is led for the first time in authentic Viennese style from the violin by concert master John Bradbury. In addition to familiar classics such as the Blue Danube Waltz, Tritsch Tratsch Polka and Radetzky March, the afternoon will include an array of other waltzes, polkas and quadrilles, colourful virtuosic showpieces and glittering operetta to get your celebrations off to a rousing start. This is a fund-raising concert for the John Carewe Brighton Orchestra Trust, supporting the BPO.

A central figure among bohemian writers, artists and thinkers of the 60s, Fay has maintained a unique cultural position through four turbulent decades. Storyville: Women Writers Festival Storyville is a new literature festival curated for Brighton Dome by Sarah-Jane Roberts. In its first year it brings together a wealth of established and emerging women writers from the UK, the US, India, Africa and Sri Lanka. Some draw on family histories and personal experience for their stories, others use real life crimes and scenarios as a springboard for biting satires or literary thrillers. Together they present a wonderful array of different voices, characters, stories and perspectives on everything from identity, memory, war and tragedy to love, loss and desire… We hope you enjoy hearing their stories.

Blending text, movement and polyphonic song, the international ensemble explores the musicality and muscularity of Shakespeare's poetry. The story is there, the characters are there, but as the action unfolds through a uniquely imagined physical and vocal language, the drama is born anew. Teatr Pieśń Kozła’s Macbeth began life during the RSC’s Complete Works season in Stratford upon Avon (2006) and was created over two years. Shifting seamlessly from dramatic scene to visceral movement and soaring song, it is a beautiful and chilling production from one of Poland's most innovative companies. There is no better way to celebrate the festive season than Handel's glorious choral masterpiece Messiah. For one night only the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Brighton Festival Chorus and four world-class soloists bring this dramatic oratorio to life. When Messiah was first performed at Dublin's New Musical Hall in 1742, profits were shared – in a suitably charitable gesture – between two hospitals and a debtor's prison. It has since become one of the most popular and enduring choral works ever written, its beautiful arias and rousing choruses resounding with joy and reverence across the ages.

Brighton & Hove Black History Month Exhibition Did you know that Brighton Dome's resplendent Concert Hall and Corn Exchange – along with the Royal Pavilion – housed wounded Indian soldiers during World War I? Thousands of Indian troops – fighting with the Allies on the Western front – were treated in these makeshift military hospitals. Nine kitchens in the Royal Pavilion were erected to cater for the different groups – Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims – and separate facilities were built in respect of their distinct practices of worship.
Brighton Dome launches a special Orchestral Open event, two days of participation and discovery as the very best in classical music spills over into the Dome Foyer. Whatever musical path you’re on – from novice to budding soloist – meet some passionate players, take part in a taster session or get some hands-on help with a new tune. Don’t be afraid to bring your own instrument! Over the last decade, this remarkable community choir has gone from strength to strength, attracting over 2,000 members and performing everywhere from Brighton's Labour Party conference to the Royal Albert Hall.
Forbidden Fruit Set in modern day America, this contemporary musical is brought to the Corn Exchange by two young Brightonians. Composer Jude Obermuller and lyricist Callum Macintyre have created this tale of love and teenage angst which they will showcase for the first time in their home town. Where possible we operate family friendly and accessible venues with baby change facilities.Concessionary-priced tickets, where available, are offered to registered disabled people, and where possible a range of prices is available for disabled customers. Each disabled customer can apply for one complimentary ticket per booking in order to bring an access assistant or companion with them free of charge. * We believe that customers shouldn't pay more than the face value of a ticket, plus booking and/or transaction fee. Their all-male dance extravaganzas – an inspired blend of parody and playful homage to the formal world of classical ballet – first struck a chord with New York’s off-Broadway crowd over a quarter of a century ago. Since then they've played to sell-out audiences in over 500 cities across 30 countries. Their comic calling card is that all parts are played by men: the heroes, the villains, the swans, even the princesses! In spring 2011 multi-award-winning pianist Paul Lewis embarks on a two-year Schubert project, performing all the composer's mature piano works from the Wanderefantasie onwards. This special Brighton Dome recital showcases some of these key works including perhaps the most exuberant of all Schubert's sonatas, the 17th, written in the mountain spa of Gastein in 1825 during a rare interlude of joyful repose in what was otherwise a markedly turbulent and troubled life. Paul Lewis is one of today's most distinctive and poetic pianists. He won the Gramophone Instrumental Award and Record of the Year in 2008, his 2009 recording of Schubert's Winterreise with Mark Padmore was a Gramophone and Sunday Telegraph pick of the year, and this year he became the first ever pianist to play all five Beethoven piano concertos during a single Proms season.

Ailey 2 grew out of the eponymous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, formed in 1958 by the legendary African-American dancer, choreographer and visionary. Under former Ailey dancer Sylvia Waters, Ailey 2 draws together America's best young dance talent, translating their strength, agility, grace and soul into stirring and powerful performances. This critically acclaimed ensemble produces a diverse dance repertoire that includes Alvin Ailey classics (such as his signature work Revelations) and thrilling new works by today's most in-demand choreographers.

Car Park Offers The nearest car park to Brighton Dome is the Church Street NCP Theatre car park. Ticket holders can save 25% on charges from 6pm to midnight (Mon-Fri, £4/hr. Sat-Sun, £5/hr). Simply validate your car park ticket with staff at the end of the performance. The Lanes car park on Black Lion St, accessed from Grand Junction Road on the seafront, is a five minute walk to the venue and charges just £4.50 to park from 6pm to midnight. Brighton Dome & Festival Members save 30% on Church Street car park charges at any time of day. Parking charges and deal correct at time of printing.
