Holiday hotshots

Capture the moment

With so many great destinations to choose from, wherever you end up going it’s a good idea to do a little research into must-have shots to take while you’re there. For example, the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, Spain makes a stunning architectural photo – try a wide-angle lens, or get down low and shoot up for a bold perspective.

Get up close

Don’t forget to take a closer look when taking snaps on holiday, whether it’s the frost on your ice cream or the beautiful details in a seashell. Use a macro lens, or the macro mode on your compact camera, to hone in on your subject and pick out patterns and shapes close up. These types of pictures look great in an album alongside portraits and full shots to give added interest.

Smart selfies

When taking a photo of yourself with a fabulous backdrop, it’s not advised to lend your camera to a stranger to take the shot for you. Keep safe and make the most of shooting a selfie! If you’ve got a camera with a flip screen like the Olympus E-PL5, you can even turn the screen all the way around to face you. Plus, check if your camera has built-in Wi-Fi with the ability to shoot using your phone as a remote device, for easy shots of yourself. If not, simply extend your arm as far as you can holding the camera to face you, and look for your reflection in the lens before shooting.

Super sunsets

Sunsets are beautiful subjects to capture, and if you’re on holiday surrounded by palm trees, you can expect some great silhouettes too. Your compact should have a sunset mode, which will heighten the contrast and saturation of colours, controlling the white-balance and exposure to give you a vibrant shot. If you’re using manual settings however on your interchangeable lens camera, make sure you set up on a tripod to avoid camera shake. Select aperture-priority and go for around f/11, then choose shade or daylight for your white-balance and off you go. Play with exposure compensation until you’re happy with the shot. As the light decreases, you should open your aperture further (decrease the f/stop number).

The UK is a great place to be when it’s warm and the summer is a great time to explore new angles. Get down low and discover the world around you. Using an interchangeable lens camera like the Panasonic GX7 with its 90° tiltable Live View Finder makes this even easier.

Capture the city

Wherever you’re based, there should be a city within easy reach, so take to the streets camera in hand and get snapping! Street photography is great to try in the summer, as the longer evenings mean more light, and generally more people! If your camera has a flip screen, shoot from your hip for a subtle approach to this genre. Or if you’re taking pictures of architecture, try panorama mode or using a wide-angle lens on your camera to create bold distortion to your proportions.

Good enough to eat

If you’re out enjoying high tea, or even having your breakfast at home, why not try your hand at food photography? A popular style, particularly with bloggers, is to shoot from a bird’s-eye view. If you have a flip screen, use this to angle the camera without having to crane your neck as you shoot handheld. Consider your background and props if at home: a wooden surface looks lovely for a vintage look, and you can add flowers or pretty cutlery for a polished look. Shoot with a wide aperture to keep your pictures bright and backgrounds blurred.

Park life

We’re lucky to be surrounded by green fields in the UK, so why not venture into the countryside, or even your local park, to soak up the rays and get closer to nature? Vibrant green and delicate blades of grass make an excellent backdrop for sunny portraits, and if your subject is close to the ground, try shooting slightly through the grass, using a wide open aperture like f/1.8 for maximum depth-of-field (blurring the background) or use your compact’s portrait or diorama mode for a similar effect. See how the grass gives your image a soft filtered look as the aperture blurs the colour.

Anyone for tennis?

Were you inspired by the action at Wimbledon earlier this summer? This ball sport is a great way to get some action shots and try out a bit of high-speed photography. Choose sport mode on your compact, or if you’re using an interchangeable lens camera select shutter-priority mode. Choose a shutter speed of at least 1/800sec to freeze the action, and slow this down if you need to. Use a higher ISO to compensate for the shutter speed. Prefocus on the player and lock on – anticipate the action and shoot when the player begins to swing to get the shot timed.

CAMERA ROLLING With interchangeable lens and compact cameras offering quality video capture, more and more photographers are making the move into movies. If you’re thinking of using a stills camera for videography, check out our top tips for motion picture perfection

Go manual

You can easily access the movie mode in most compact cameras by simply pressing the round button with a red dot in the middle to start recording. For interchangeable lens cameras you may find a movie camera symbol on a mode dial or via the menu function. If you are using a lens with autofocus (AF), it’s often worth disabling this and switching to manual focus as the lens may hunt while you are recording, momentarily throwing everything out of focus. What’s more, the noise of the AF mechanism may also be picked up by the camera’s microphone, potentially ruining the shot.

Steady as you go

Unless you have phenomenally steady hands, camera shake will probably be the first problem you encounter when switching to movie mode on your camera, so a tripod or monopod is an essential investment for professional looking videos. Consider opting for a tripod with a smooth pan/tilt head to add variety and stabilised movement to your shots.

Get established

Foresight is crucial when shooting video. Try to think about how all of the different shots will edit together when you upload them to your computer. If you’re planning on shooting something creative rather than just documenting your experiences, try sketching out a storyboard to help you visualise the final film. If you’d like to add credits or a menu at the start of your film, think about shooting some establishing shots of the location to really set the scene.

Sound advice

One of the main learning curves for photographers moving into video is dealing with the minefield that is audio. Sound may or may not be a consideration depending on what you are recording. If you’d like to capture some family videos on holiday, a camera with in-built audio should be perfect for your needs. If you plan on filming a friend’s wedding then take a look at the range of hotshoe microphones and external audio recorders available to take your audio up a notch and ensure you catch every quivering syllable during the speeches.

Need for speed

If you don’t already have one, a high-speed memory card is an important addition to your kitbag if you plan on using your camera to shoot video. Cards with slow read/write speeds can cause the camera’s buffer to fill whilst transferring data to the card, resulting in unwelcome gaps in your footage. Card capacity is also an important factor when you consider that a 2GB card will only hold ten minutes of Full HD footage. When it comes to memory cards for video, size really does matter. Bold bokeh

Lovely landscapes

Bokeh is the way your lens renders blur in your photos. Types can vary depending on the quality of the lens. Using a lens with a wide aperture will render light in the background blur into soft circles. The shallower the depth-offield, the more bokeh. If you have a portrait lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 you’ll be able to achieve incredible bokeh. Turn to aperturepriority and open up to the widest f/stop, focus on your subject, and the background colours will blend with light, shown as creamy circles.

OF-FIELD

Creating photographs with a professional feel takes a great piece of kit, a little understanding and the right techniques. Read on to master depth-of-field for shots with real impact

Near or far

Depth-of-field is how much of your image appears to be in focus within the frame and is linked directly to the aperture of your lens. The larger your f/stop number (like f/22) the smaller the aperture, which lets in a reduced amount of light, allowing your lens to ‘see’ further and capture a further field of vision. The smaller your f/stop (like f/4) the wider the aperture, and the more light can be let in. This means your subject will have a short focus, blurring the rest of the scene out. Choosing a shallow depth-of-field is great for portraits and still life, whereas a long depth-of-field can deliver stunning landscapes. LARGE APERTURE

When you’re faced with expansive, rolling scenes, it seems a shame not to make the most of the view by capturing it in full focus. To achieve the maximum field of view, you’ll need a minimum aperture like f/22, allowing the maximum details to be captured. Because the sensor won’t be exposed to as much light this way, it’s well worth setting up on a tripod to allow your shutter speed to compensate for your aperture. Using exposure bracketing is a safe way to ensure you get the most detail, without any grain: make sure you take a couple of shots using a couple of different exposure values.
