Choose the right kit and you’ll be well on your way to grabbing great wildlife images Capturing great images of the wildlife around us takes skill, patience and the right kit. While landscapes are laid out in front of you and don’t go anywhere, wildlife photography often involves hunting for your subject and having knowledge of how it’s going to behave when you find it. Given this, equipment needs to perform when required – the last thing you want is to miss a shot because you’re struggling to fit the right lens or get your bag open.

Long telephoto lenses aren’t essential for those who are starting out and good results are achievable with more modest equipment. Consider equipment that can be used for other subjects; a telezoom lens, for example, is great for wildlife but can also be used for sports, portraits and travel shots. When you’re sizing up bags and tripods, meanwhile, make sure they’re comfortable and portable – you may have to travel some distance to get the very best shots.

GO ON A LOCAL SAFARI You don’t have to go to the Serengeti to take great wildlife images – your local park will do. Animals and birds in these locations are more tame as they’re used to human presence, so you should be able to get a little closer. CHOOSING A LENS A lens featuring a focal length around 300mm is fine to get started. Bear in mind that if you’re using an interchangeable lens camera with Four-Thirds or APS-C sized sensor, any focal length will be multiplied, so you’ll get even closer. Lenses with image stabilisation are useful as the effect is more obvious on longer focal lengths. With this in mind, look out for models with IS, OS, VC or VR as they could make the difference between a sharp and a blurred image.

PORTRAITS Start taking better people pictures with this guide to the best kit Is there anything better than taking photographs of our friends and loved ones? Great portraits make for great memories, so if you do want to capture the best shots it makes sense to invest in the right equipment for the job. Portraits taken using daylight are popular right now and you can certainly get plenty of practice in during the summer months. Although this means no flash, it’s still useful to have other accessories including a reflector to bounce the light onto your subject’s face and a lens hood to stop flare if you shoot when the sun is lower in the sky. BLUR THE BACKGROUND Make your portraits stand out – quite literally – by using a wide aperture on your lens. Position your subject at least two metres from a plain coloured background, then choose a wide aperture (small f/number) on your lens and focus carefully on their eyes. The result will be a pin-sharp person with a blurred background. Depending on the lens and location, you could get some nice out-of-focus highlights (bokeh) too; very professional looking!

FLASH OF INSPIRATION A hot-shoe flashgun, which slides onto the metal plate on top of most interchangeable lens cameras, will offer more power than a built-in flash, giving you a greater shooting range. We’d recommend buying a model with a bounce/tilt head so you can soften the light by reflecting it off a wall or ceiling. Also, see if the flashgun can be fired wirelessly away from the camera, which gives you more flexibility with where you position the unit.

From majestic mountains to dramatic valleys, the UK is home to some of the most diverse landscapes on the planet, so it’s only natural that you’ll want to photograph them in all their glory. GRADUATE TOWARDS FILTERS One of the issues you’ll face with landscapes is the brightness difference between the sky and the land – it’s hard for cameras to get detail in both areas, even though your eyes will see plenty of detail in both. The solution is to use a graduated neutral density filter, which is part grey and part clear. When you’re shooting, position the grey part over the sky in your scene to reduce the contrast between land and sky and help you get good detail in both areas. See page 66 for more on filters.

PERFECT PANNING

A great way of showing how fast something is moving is to pan. This is done by following the subject in your camera’s viewfinder, taking a picture as it passes you and then continuing to follow the subject afterwards. The whole movement should be done in one smooth ‘pan’. It works on any moving subject and takes plenty of practice to perfect, but once you get it right, the results are dramatic.

But with so many options available it can be difficult to know what’s right for you.

UV FILTERS One of the first types of filter you’ll come across is UV filters. They don’t apply any special effects, although they can help to reduce haze on bright sunny days. UV filters are mainly used to help protect the glass element at the front from dirt and scratches – well worth it if you’ve just invested in some pricey glass.

WITHOUT ND FILTER

WHAT FILTER SIZE? Filters come in a range of sizes so they fit different lenses. So when you buy a filter you have to be sure it’s the right size. To find out what filter thread size your lens has, simply remove the protective cap from the front of the lens. On the back, you’ll see the size you need quoted as something like 52mm, 58mm, 67mm, or 77mm etc.

ND FILTERS One of the most creative, yet simple, filter options is neutral density (ND) filters. They’re available in different light-blocking strengths, and simply reduce the amount of light entering the lens. This allows you to take photographs with a slow shutter speed to blur moving subjects such as

If you’re looking for a filter that will dramatically improve your photography, then a polarising filter is exactly what you need. These versatile filters can be used to deepen the colour and contrast of blue skies, increase overall colour saturation, reduce reflections from glass, water, metal and any reflective surface, and they reduce the amount of light entering the lens too – like a ND filter.

How to use a polarising filter Polarising filters have a rotating front section that needs to be turned until the desired effect can be seen through the camera viewfinder. They’re most effective when you’re standing at a 90-degree angle to the sun, but will work at other angles too. Their effect is distinctive, so when it’s not required it is recommended to remove the polariser from your lens.

WITHOUT ND GRAD FILTER If you’re into landscapes, neutral density graduated filters (ND grads) are absolutely essential. So how do they work? At the top of the filter is a light reducing coating that graduates from full to no effect halfway down the filter. They’re used to stop the sky from overexposing and being captured as a bright featureless white expanse. These filters are most commonly a drop-in type where you attach a special holder onto the front of your lens using a

With ND grads you can retain dramatic cloud detail and the natural blue colour of the sky, while the ground will be perfectly exposed. Above, the exposure of the sky was reduced with a ND grad, and cloud detail has been maintained. Without using a ND grad the sky is completely bleached out with no visible detail.

If you want to do more than just gaze at a land far, far away, grab your camera and capture the sky. To photograph stars, you’ll need a tripod and a wide-angle lens so you can capture as much as possible. A popular technique within astrophotography is star trails. Here are some tips on how you can shoot star trails yourself…

Go to Layers > Merge Layers and then you’ll have just one layer with all the star trails. You can then make adjustments to this image as desired – contrast, lighting etc.

Superzooms may sound like a speedy superhero, but they are in fact one of the most popular lenses available for beginners. But if you’re aiming for the best image quality possible, it’s always best to opt for a lens that’s designed for a specific type of photography.

Wide-angle zooms allow you to capture a much wider view of the scene than your kit lens, which makes them ideal for landscape and architecture. Some ultra wide-angles have image stabilisation, but since most scenic photography is shot with the camera attached to a tripod this isn’t an essential feature for most people. However, if you aim to shoot handheld it can be useful. For full-frame cameras look at 16-35mm lenses, for APS-C cameras you’ll need around 12-24mm, and for Micro Four Thirds 9-18mm is perfect.

Wildlife photography was once the exclusive pursuit of professional photographers with an astronomical budget for new lenses. JARGON BUSTER FOCAL LENGTH This determines the angle of view produced by a lens, or how wide the image will appear. It also suggests how magnified subjects will be – a lens with a ‘long’ focal length brings distant subjects close, while ‘short’ focal lengths produce a wider view of a scene. This is why wildlife photographers prefer telephoto lenses, and landscape photographers typically use wide-angles. LENS TYPES There are two main types of lenses – primes and zooms. A prime lens has a fixed focal length and will often have a wider maximum aperture. A zoom lens, on the other hand, has a variable focal length that can be changed by twisting the zoom ring, or by pressing the powerzoom button. There are pros and cons to using either type of lens, but many photographers enjoy the flexibility provided by zooms. MAXIMUM APERTURE If there’s one lens feature you’ll see quoted everywhere, it’s maximum aperture. If you’re wondering what aperture is, it’s simply a controllable diaphragm inside lenses used to control the amount of light passing through. Maximum aperture is simply the largest, or widest, physical setting. For portrait photography a wide aperture is often favoured, while for landscapes a narrow aperture is preferable.

If you love shooting flowers, details and insects, a macro lens is an essential addition to your kit bag. These specialist lenses allow you to get close to tiny subjects and capture every detail with exquisite clarity. Macro lenses can produce images at a 1:1 ratio. This is where the subject being photographed is captured on the camera sensor at the same size it is in reality. So a 1cm long insect will be recorded covering 1cm of the camera sensor. They’re also great for portraits thanks to their incredible optics.

The humble 50mm f/1.8, affectionately known as the ‘nifty fifty’, is one of the most interesting lenses available. Not only are they often cheap to buy, they also provide excellent image quality and large maximum apertures for beautiful shallow depth-of-field effects. For an equivalent focal length of 50mm on Micro Four Thirds look for 25mm, and with APS-C cameras look at 35mm. 50mm is considered one of the best focal length for portraits, fashion and general photography. Everyone should have one.

IMAGE STABILISATION There are times when movement of the camera or lens can be captured as blur in your images. A feature found on some lenses called Image Stabilisation (IS) is one way to combat the problem. Other names for the feature include Vibration Reduction (VR) and Vibration Compensation (VC). POWERZOOM The focal length of a zoom lens is traditionally adjusted by twisting a rubberised ring on the lens barrel. This remains typical of larger DSLR lenses. But for mirrorless camera lenses, it’s becoming more common to see powerzooms. This function allows you to change focal length using a button on the side of the lens. Powerzooms are generally more expensive than manual.

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR VIDEOGRAPHY Want to take your home movies from budget to blockbuster? Our friends over at Pro Moviemaker magazine have some top tips to help you do just that… 1. SHOOT FOR THE EDIT

Think about what you’d like to do with your footage afterwards. If you’re planning on editing a few scenes together to share with others then make sure you think about the editing process while you’re shooting. If you’re filming your child playing with a kite for instance, get a wide shot of them unravelling the string and then zoom in for a close-up of the same action so that you can edit these two shots together seamlessly.

4. ALL ABOUT ACCESSORIES

One of the main things that photographers struggle with when shooting movies is that you need to add movement to keep your shots interesting. Invest in a dedicated video tripod for smooth pan and tilt movements or consider a gimbal camera for the ultimate in stability. Don't forget your directional microphone too so you're always hearing exactly what you're seeing.

2. DON'T SHOOT AT EYE LEVEL

If you’re filming people, avoid the temptation to capture them directly at eye level as this typically makes for boring watching. Instead, think about what you want to convey about this person. Shooting from slightly above eye-level can diminish someone, conversely shooting from a slightly lower angle can make someone appear dominant.
