ABOUT BRILLIANT

a new book that offers a compelling insight to the man and his motivations. Now Easter has passed for another year and (hopefully!) all the chocolate eggs and yummy treats have been demolished, it’s the perfect time to consider our health once again and we profile two relatively lesser know sports which could well be worth trying your hand at; we catch up with 20-year-old Spanish student Elena who has been practising synchronised swimming for the past 14 years, and chat with Alexis Plantard in Phuket, Thailand who runs a mixed martial arts Dojo and who has been helping mentor a number of young students to international medal acclaim.

We also examine living healthy in the ever-evolving workplace and receive some invaluable mental health tips from life coach Bernie Ginnane.

Last but not least we mark the crucial date in the calendar when we all show our respects and remember those that have served the country in overseas conflict by taking a look at a range of local and state events that honour Anzac Day this year.

We very much hope you enjoy this month’s edition and stay Brilliant!

WANT TO BUY A HOUSE BUT THE BANK SAYS NO? LET’S WRAP IT UP...

✦ “There is no ‘best’ time or ‘worst’ time to buy property...”

While this is one of the most frequently heard sayings in the property game, for some it can be a quandary in itself. Property investment can be a convoluted process but, for many, often just getting started can be a major challenge.

Rising interest rates and property prices, challenges with banks lending the money to action a home loan, maybe issues with credit ratings, these are all common factors that can hinder people getting onto the property ladder.

Benefits of Property Vendor Financing or Wrapping a Property

This is where Property Vendor Financing or Wrapping a Property can often be the answer. In a nutshell, this process allows buyers who cannot qualify for a traditional home loan to purchase a property by aligning with the property seller, or vendor, who organises the finance for them and effectively loans the buyer the money to buy their home.

The benefit for the homeowner is it provides them with an alternative

access route to purchasing and acquiring a property, while the benefit for the vendor is it provides a positive cash flow each month and a tidy lump sum of equity when you sell the property. It’s an arrangement that ultimately results in mutual benefit, often creating a close relationship of trust between vendor and customer.

Property Vendor Financing is a process that has been in operation in Australia for over 100 years and is often referred to as ‘Property Wrapping’. It’s a process that Paul Zalitis is so experienced and adept with that he has been afforded the affectionate nickname of “The Aussie

6

Wrapper”.

Over a 32-year career specialising in vendor financing, negative gearing and positive cash flow property investing, Paul has helped many people navigate the choppy waters of the Aussie real estate market, specifically those who have experienced challenges in acquiring their first house. Quite simply, when the banks say no then people turn to Paul who helps them achieve their goals of owning their own home while realising a positive cash flow dynamic himself. A win-win if ever there was one.

“It’s a win-win for both parties,” Paul tells us. “You can become financially free and help good-hearted Aussies finally own their dream home and escape the relentless rental trap. In fact, I can’t think of other financial strategies that actually benefit both sides in such a way!”

Property Wrapping can enable the reduction of negative gearing losses, where an income from real estate can be effectively realised pretty much immediately. It is an excellent way to generate consistent, sustainable revenue through positive cashflow where multiple income streams can become a reality, something that can offer very welcome peace of mind during the current, tumultuous economic climate.

It is something Paul has delivered to numerous people on numerous occasions. Take the example of a lady homeowner based on the New South Wales coast who had struggled for over nine months to sell her house. After a consultation with Paul and him weaving some magic, the house was sold within a week.

in and before too long the couple were first time home owners who have since gone on to marry and have children in the same house. There are several first-hand, glowing testimonials from delighted customers that Paul has helped through his company Opportunity Housing available to see here.

Paul has helped purchase 10 separate homes over the years through Opportunity Housing, which he founded in 2003. As a mentor in this capacity it is clearly evident that he is passionate about his craft – as the old saying goes, “the proof is in the pudding”, and there’s a big difference between people who talk a good game and people who live, breathe and love

what they do. Paul is absolutely in the latter category and takes his work extremely seriously.

“I treat everyone with the utmost respect and am always honest,” he explains, crucial virtues in any walk of life. “You’ve got to be fully abreast of the market at all times. You need to be continuously researching to stay on top of things, to develop great relationships with agents and be aware of opportunities. I love to read and to constantly learn. To do all that takes considerable focus and discipline.” While there is a very real positive economic trade-off for Paul, this isn’t the solitary motivation as to why he champions Property Wrapping so enthusiastically.

c“I like helping people achieve their goals,” Paul tells us directly. “I can’t tell you how fulfilling that is to me. I was disenchanted with the real estate market years ago, more so the fact I was losing money through negative gearing. I realised there was a better way by wrapping property and now I just want to help as many people as I possibly can,” he adds.

“Wrapping a property or property vendor financing can be a valuable tool for you to boost your cash flow and it also allows you to grow your investment portfolio.”

DECADES IN THE TRADE

✦ In this world of ever-increasing velocity it is quite easy to find oneself feeling dizzy at times!

The advances in technological innovation have been profound, particularly in the past decade or so, to the extent that it is a genuine challenge to pinpoint much in our every day lives that ISN’T impacted or wholly dominated by technology.

Just stop and think about it for a second – the dual advent of the internet and smart phones in particular has meant an over reliance on technology that very much shapes our current existence. The increasingly consistent saying of “you live through your phone” is not so much a tongue-in-cheek jibe anymore but a genuine truism. It is very much plausible nowadays to never leave your home yet still function perfectly well, with everything from e-commerce products, food delivery and groceries all just a click away from arriving at your door. You can pay bills, order and customise TV and media content, communicate with friends a block away or a continent away and even find love through a

variety of dating apps, all from the comfort of your home.

Is it so far fetched to suggest that if technology innovation contnues at this rate, it won’t be too long before the majority of us are indeed bunkered in behind our doors, rarely seeing the light of day with minimal person-to-person contact? That the trading floors of New York, London and Tokyo don’t very soon fall into a hush as online algorithims replace traditional rowdy traders? That journalists at global publishing houses and media companies aren’t replaced by artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT, factory personnel and even supermarket staff are replaced by machines, likewise taxi drivers and maybe even pilots? A 2019 article by Financier Worldwide suggests no industry is immune from tech disruption so the answer is perhaps not.

The rate of adoption of such technological innovation across a range of products and services has been staggering and, from a

timeframe perspective, mindbendingly rapid. It also prompted us at Brilliant-Online to ask the question as to what HASN’T really been impacted in this respect over the years, tying in conveniently with the fact April is Heritage Month.

We thought long and hard but struggled to come up with any viable list of products, services or trades that haven’t really changed or been reshaped by technology. It really is quite a tough ask.

Even industries traditionally driven by manual labour, such as agriculture or construction, have been impacted to a degree by technology – think of sheep herding, for example. While in biblical days the shepherd always required a crook (which, while it may have been an innovation at the time, doesn’t qualify as a technological one!) in modern times it is an industry that requires motor vehicles and computerised resources like radios and GPS.

12
The increasingly consistent saying of “you live through your phone” is not so much a tongue-in-cheek jibe anymore but a genuine truism

However, after digging deep and thinking extra hard, we did uncover a few products, services and industries that are still holding onto their heritage and resisting change – for now at least...

Zip it!

One product that many people use every day without much thought is the ubiquitous zipper. On clothes, bags, camping equipment, work uniforms, shoes, boots, handbags, zippers are everywhere! Infact the company arguably most associated with the zipper, YKK Group of Japan, manufactures roughly 3 million kilometers worth of zippers every year! April 29 is National Zipper Day and this year marks the official 100year anniversary of the zipper as we know it today so we thought we’d take a quick history lesson...

The life of the zipper started in 1851 when American inventor Elias Howe received a patent for an “Improvement in Fastenings for Garments”. However, Elias didn’t act on his discovery, allowing compatriot Whitcomb L. Judson to patent a complex hook-and-eye shoe fastener 42 years later. Judson’s device debuted at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair but met with little commercial success and, despite him often being regarded as the original creator of the zipper, his product was never used in clothing.

However, Judson had laid down the blue print that was taken up and developed by Gideon Sundback, a Swedish American design engineer who developed a hookless fastener using interlocking teeth that were easy to lock and release with an attached slider. Patented as a product in 1917, and with a few tweaks here and there over the years, the term ‘zipper’ was coined by the B.F. Goodrich Company and finally launched in 1923. It has been utilised ever since with little variation to the original design.

However, despite little or no intrusion or disruption from technology in over 100 years, even the zipper could be set for change as the newest innovation in interlocking closures comes from Tesia Thomas of ZiprShift.

com. Her trademarked Klōs product creates a watertight, airtight seal that, if distributed for public and industrial consumption, could very much change the zipper landscape for good. Only time will tell...

Hang on...

Upon further reflection we realised there is another product prevalent in households all around the world that has largely been untouched by technological innovation and which has therefore held onto much of its heritage: the coathanger.

While there are several theories abounding to the invention of the coathanger, the most widely acceptable seems to be that of Albert J. Parkhouse of Jackson, Michigan who, on arriving at work in 1903, discovered all the coat hooks were taken and was prompted to take a piece of wire and fashion a design similar to what we know today in order to hold his coat. Bingo, that simple!

In the 120 years since, the shouldershaped, boomerang-esque coat or clothing hanger has provided people quick access to their clothing from functional, easy access storage areas while minimising wrinkles.

Sure, they may have evolved from the original wire design to incorporate wooden, foam and even satin-laced varities, but the basic functionalty has remained the same and been much loved since. The only impact expected on the traditional coathanger is an environmentally sustainable one where production focused on reduced plastic waste will see recycled materials utilised more, thus reducing waste, conserving energy and resources and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

There is no doubt many other products out there, perhaps even industries, have largely preserved their heritage and been untouched by the ever-increasingly prevalent innovation of technology. If you can think of any, please feel free to share them...

TG'S CHILD CARE IS PLAYING IT FORWARD WITH A LONG TERM VISION AND SUSTAINABILITY

✦ Having brought Playing is Learning for Life to communities across Australia for the past 25 years, TG's Child Care is going strong into the next decade.

TG's Child Care is all about growing and seeding for the future. Playing is Learning for Life is a lifelong vision of TG’s Child Care where children are given the skills and tools they need for sustainable learning i.e. taking these values beyond Big School and continue Playing It Forward even after they leave TG’s.

This extends to TG's as a whole. They have been welcomed and seen as the nucleus of each community for the last 25 years, and hands-on owners and operators Trevor and Gayle Kee continue to keep TG's flying with renewed energy each year.

cMuch thought has been given to TG's sustainability and long life through the years. In fact, TG's is the only early learning centre to have Environment Social Governance (ESG) as part of their business DNA. It's how they execute Playing is Learning for Life.

The world is in a constant state of flux, and TG's has really stepped up to thrive in the Next Normal World, with Connection and Community as their goals. How does TG's inject sustainability and long term vision into what they do every day?

14
Taking a bold leap into the future at TG's!

Operations Readiness

If it's one thing we've learnt over the last few years of COVID, floods, bushfires, cyclones, agility is a necessary skill to cultivate to ensure businesses can continue to operate even through challenging times.

TG's is agile in responding and complying to regulations and recommendations of the government or implementation of strict hygiene, safety and recovery protocols, as part of their crisis management whether it’s for COVID, communicable diseases or floods and other emergencies.

This gives a strong sense of assurance to families and the children, that they are being kept safe and updated on what everyone needs to do for the wellbeing of all. Families know they can rely on TG's to do the right thing.

TG’s maintains constant communications with government agencies to better understand any changes or developments that may come up. TG’s management meets with State and Federal MPs to discuss industry challenges and guide future planning. TG’s also works closely with Early Childhood Australia and Australian Childcare Alliance to maintain best practice and keep upto-date with trend and regulatory changes and with National Quality Standards the recently updated Early Years Framework.

Flexibility in services

With agility comes flexibility. TG's has never stopped being sensitive to and conscious of the needs of a changing society and demands of modern families.

With remote working now a common option, many regions saw an influx of young families moving back to their hometowns or to be closer to families. These families need childcare, and TG's not only stepped up to fill this need, but they also continued to keep up their high standards.

At TG's, nobody is left behind. Many families were involved in frontline services, and TG's demonstrated agility and flexibility (and much needed empathy) to provide immediate short term child care for

these families. Their children needed TG's to be there for them. When daily routines get disrupted, it can be worrying for both the children and the parents who are torn between having to serve in their jobs and make sure their children receive care. Many families have really appreciated TG's simply being there for them, exactly like an extended family.

During COVID, something that TG's Educators did that went above and beyond was to prepare a creative care package for families to implement at home that included science experiences, mindfulness practices, cooking experiences, story times, music and movement activities. This was a big help for families, it meant that their children could engage in Playing is Learning for Life anywhere,

they felt that TG's continued to be right by them, and it provided a sense of much-needed consistency.

Since the very beginning when TG's first started, families have always appreciated having a place like TG's in their community. Modern lifestyles make it difficult for families to have just one salary in the household, and families face the difficult decision of having to find a place to care for their children. Many feel that TG's is able to provide a home away from home for the children to grow to their fullest potential and provide peace of mind to families at work. Knowing that their children are in great hands, families can fully contribute to their work places. TG´s helps families with work life balance.

Educators matter too

Flexibility is extended to the Educators as well. They have flexible working schedules so they can work around their family commitments and have a choice of maintaining or increasing income based on their individual circumstances. Having a long term vision for TG's also means having a long term vision for the career span of the Educators. Giving them a healthy work-life balance, reducing working hours, providing a 4-day roster instead of five, and allowing for child care for their children within TG's service all help Educators to fully thrive in their profession without sacrificing family commitments.

TG's also offers additional benefits and bonuses to encourage Educators to stay with TG’s as long term employees. TG's offers above award wages, extra bonuses and mental health and well-being payments and leave to support their team. TG's also provides incentives and spotters’ fees to those who bring in a new successful Educator employee.

Educators who have been with TG's can all attest to TG’s strong culture and how they value all the Educators' teamwork and mate ship. Constant internal and external communications, webinars, additional training and up-skilling allows Educators to feel extremely well looked after and they are given the resources and guidance to build strong career pathways.

Embracing technology

Many of TG's families are young and tech-savvy. TG's has also learnt to step ahead in terms of technology to bring convenience to families. It is seen as another channel of communication that brings with it benefits. Platforms and apps such as Zoom, Facebook, Messenger and Xplor all help TG's and families to stay connected. The Xplor app is a new contactless sign in and out system to allow families to connect with their children's learning journeys, daily activities, wellbeing, health information, calendars, financial details.

Technology is a boost, and TG's also continues to highly value face to face communication with families

around their children’s growth and development and to ensure the children feel safe and well cared for.

COVID certainly pushed many businesses to step into technology. Digitization has now become the norm, and more will come. For TG's, it makes sense to welcome the appropriate tools to help boost their Connection and Community goals.

Growing leaders

It's not just the children that are lovingly cared for at TG's. The same care, kindness and respect is given to the Educators too. They are nurtured in a loving environment where their voices are heard.

At TG's, Educators are loved, trusted and respected and that motivates and empowers them to go above and beyond for the children, families and communities.

TG's is seeding new Educators and providing fertile ground for new Leaders to grow and thrive. Each TG's leader plays it forward and lifts up their team. TG's develops Centre Managers and Team Leaders with leadership skills and empowerment to make important decisions with

cTG’s business and management. This helps to make their business operations and management more robust and sustainable. TG's has a strong sense of paddling the canoe together, because here, everyone's voice matters.

Meet the amazing women leaders at TG's Child Care

What is interesting about TG's magic is it doesn't just stay within the confines of TG's playspaces. The TG's Way radiates and touches everyone who comes into contact with the TG's Family. Educators take on the TG's Way as a natural way of life in their own families and communities.

For the larger community

Wherever TG's is, the community thrives along with it. This is part of TG's business sustainability framework.

In just Wauchope alone, the three TG's campuses are each licensed for a maximum of 47 places each providing 37,440 sessions of long day care each year to support the children, families and local community. This allows families to work and study and develop their careers. On top of that, TG's provides employment and career advancement opportunities for 70 educators in Wauchope - this has a flow on effect supporting the local economy.

Whenever possible, TG's supports local services and tradespeople in their communities to supply what they need across our centres. Their latest centre was in Urangan, and having the locals step in to get TG's playspaces ready meant that even before operation, TG's was already nurturing strong relationships in the community! Many families that TG’s supports have their own businesses and TG's in turn promotes and supports them. For example, children may go for a walking tour to a nursery, learning about plants and that is a way of promoting that family’s business. Sometimes TG's also invites families and/or their business to come chat to the children about what they do so they can learn.

17
BRILLIANT BUSINESS
TG's Educators are Simply Playful!

We are all paddling in the same sea, even if we are all in different boats, and TG's has a strong sense of sustainability and long term vision where they know that when one thrives, everyone benefits. It's about lifting each other up. When there is someone in need, TG's is there to step up and raise funds e.g. to support farmers in crisis, or the Lemonade Crew in their fight against MND (Motor Neurone Disease).

Playing it Forward

It is no wonder TG's Child Care is seen as the stewardship of the children's future. With all that they are doing, families and children know they can count on TG's like a rock to always be there for them. The children have Healthy Harold visit them to learn wellbeing tools and their beach and bush kindys for a boost of indigenous wisdom. In a child's eyes, these are great fun.

For families, they can see that TG's is really setting a strong foundation for each child to give them everything they need to grow to their fullest potential, not just at TG's but beyond. Nothing that TG’s does is ever just random. Everything has its place, and are stepping stones to take the children, families, communities, Educators and TG's way into the future.

We know there'll be many more 25 years of Playing is Learning for Life to look forward to.

In 2023, Make Your Good Business Better (yes, overcome uncertainties)

20

Old school marketing

Think old school marketing and you'd probably conjure up images of posters, flyers, leaflets handed out in the street, huge billboards on long drives, cheesy advertisements on TV or a radio ad jingle you just can't get out of your head, cold calls, snail mail, door-to-door sales. The messages we received from all these ads, regardless of their industry was mostly about how they are the best and that it'll be really good for us to purchase them.

Could your grandparents ever have imagined what Tik Tok is or even how powerful and extensive its influence could be? Or that you don't need to have a physical human salesperson in front of you to deliver a product and collect your payment, that you could just click on a screen and that's it?

Marketing in even just the last few years has changed. And that is one thing that stands out about Modern Marketing. You have got to keep up.

Adapt. Be agile. Be flexible. Never stop innovating.

Vermilion Pinstripes has certainly seen their fair share of the evolution of marketing. What are some of the highlights of the changes over time in marketing?

Customer is still king

But that's not new, you say. The customer is always right. We've heard that for eons! Yes, businesses may have put customers on a pedestal but businesses did not really know their customers well. At all. Marketing in the past placed importance on the company or brand itself. That's why brands were always saying how they are the best, and one brand's message was not that different from the next's. They didn't care who the customers were. As long as there's a human, the business would want to start selling how great they are.

c“Content marketing is really like a first date. If all you do is talk about yourself, there won’t be a second date.” –

Nowadays, marketing is not about yakking about your brand. You need to shine the spotlight on the customers, for real.

21
BRILLIANT BUSINESS
Modern Marketing for Accomplished Tree Management

Modern Marketing is customercentric. What this means is it prioritises the needs and interests of customers in everything marketing does. It's no longer about trying to win over the hearts of every human. It's about being very specific who your customers are, the type of customers, what drives them, what repels them, what attracts them, what creates desire in them, what problems they have and the solutions you can offer. You really have to know your customers well. The key point here is business now want to know how their product or service can improve some aspect of the customer's work or life.

Get a free worksheet from Vermilion Pinstripes to help you define your customer avatar. Having an accurate profile of your customer type can help you focus your marketing strategies and campaigns, ensuring a more focused and relevant approach without wasting valuable resources aiming for customers who wouldn't be interested in you.

Define your customer avatar

Does your brand have a voice?

Gone are the days where a business is just a business to facilitate the transaction of services and products. Nowadays, if your brand doesn't have a voice, you're not going to get very far.

“A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories, and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.” —

Modern Marketing for My Blue Tea

That's why brand messaging is so important. It is what helps customers to understand your business. It gives your brand a voice. One that is easily recognisable immediately and anywhere. It's incredibly powerful. Just think Disney. What comes to your mind? Magic. Happiness. And your brain simply takes off and generates a whole series of beautiful images, and endorphins flood your system. Disney's marketing department certainly worked hard to put all the right ingredients in their magical cauldron of brand messaging.

Your brand message expresses clearly why your business is useful, and what your values are, thereby triggering a deep desire for these products and services. When people joke about

how their business is like their baby, it's not just about the amount of time, effort and money spent on growing it. It's also really about giving their business an identity, a look, a feel that makes it unique. Do your brand messaging well and you'll stand out from the crowd.

Vermilion Pinstripes uses their Modern Marketing Framework to help clients find and refine their brand message to help them stand out in a competitive marketplace. The first step is precisely the Brand Message.

22
c
The Power of Brand Messaging

Winning example:

TG's Child Care has been a long standing client with Vermilion Pinstripes. Their brand messaging is a strong one. As the stewardship of the children's future, TG's Child Care is leading the way in Playing is Learning for Life, and Playing it Forward into the future. From revamping their website to handling their blogs, social media posts and articles on BrilliantOnline magazine, Vermilion Pinstripes makes sure their brand message is kept consistent across the different mediums. Even when a new customer first gets to know TG's Child Care, the message they walk away with is this is a truly loving and fun environment where children grow under safe and warm wings to their fullest potential, a place where children and Educators love going to every day (it's like going home!) and where parents can entrust the care of their children and have peace of mind when they go to work.

Embrace social media

In the past you could probably get away with just having a website, and in fact if you actually had one it would seem pretty impressive. Nowadays, that's just not enough. The pandemic has forced businesses into cyberspace, whether you liked it or not. When you can't be there physically to sell, you simply have to get creative and find another

way. Those with techno phobia had to switch their mindset and turn techno savvy. Businesses had to establish some sort of digital presence, whether it's revamping their website to keep it relevant to the times, getting on the appropriate social media channels, learning what posts attract and what videos were popular, and being really responsive in the digital space. The upside is, cyberspace opened up the range of customers for businesses from merely local or national to global. The world is your oyster has never been more true.

“Don't use social media to impress people; use it to impact people.” —

Be careful you don't fall into the trap of using social media as a way to blow your own trumpet. It's still not about you! Make sure your content is targeting at your specific customers. It has to be something that they are interested in, not what you think they should know about you.

Modern Marketing for TG's Child

Winning example:

Vermilion Pinstripes has worked for several years with My Blue Tea. From making their website to integrating Facebook Messenger onto their website, the team made it easy for clients to get in touch with the business. By making everything seamless and making engagement easy, the minute a customer surfs their website and likes something, it's just a click away from getting information, or making a purchase. The team also optimised their social media presence via Facebook, Instagram and Google My Business. Because they are a small business, it is imperative they can be easily found (everywhere!). The team set

up their online shop so they can service anyone from anywhere. Small businesses can go international too, thanks to digitization.

Tell a good story

Stories are a great way to engage customers, invite them into your world, encourage them to identify with you and what you have to say may resonate with their personal needs and wants also. (Do your research well to understand your target customer profile to know what kind of stories would appeal to them.) It generates an emotional hook and makes your customers get curious about you and want to get to know you better.

When you meet someone new, you're likely to forget their name and profession if that's all you know about them. But if this person shares an anecdote with you that catches your attention, you're more likely to remember their name and a lot more about them. It even makes you hope you can see them again soon. That's the power of stories. For eons it has been used as a way to pass down wisdom and knowledge to the next generation. It is a key aspect in the history of humanity.

BRILLIANT DECADES IN THE TRADE WITH NOEL ONG, CEO OF SAMSO

Noel Ong, CEO of Samso has been sharing a range of deep insights from thought leaders in our Brilliant Investments. Today we decided to shine the spotlight on him and his career.

About the Samso Business

The business is all about creating a platform for companies to showcase their story in an educated and easy format for the general investing community to understand.

In 2023, human intuition is all about content and the ability to consume masses of information at the same time. Most importantly, the masses are demanding prompt and constant information. Google is now allowing people to ask everything and get instant answers. Providing experiences is how CEOs are given a voice at Samso.

Taiton Resources Limited (ASX:T88)

Noel Ong is also Managing Director at Taiton Resources.

I see this as a great opportunity to be involved in discovering a new Mineral System in a Province scale. After looking deeply into the prospectivity of the projects presented, it seemed like an opportunity of a lifetime. The company is now listed on the ASX and the journey to make what is a potential into a reality is underway.

The Beginning

Honestly, till today, I still have no idea what spurred me into taking up trade in the mineral exploration or Mining sector! Standing on the campus of the University of Western Australia, outside the chemistry department, I remember talking about the decision to do Geology as I kind of liked it and did well in high school.

That was in 1987. The following year was when my journey in the “mining sector” began in earnest. For a person who went through undergraduate just going through the paces, I ended up with an Honours Degree in Geology.

This change in direction of my studies may or may not be related to a subconscious journey of fulfilling my heritage. My grandfather was a gold miner in the 1930s and made a generational discovery of a gold mine later in his life.

The Beginnings of Working Life

1992 was the year I started working life but it was not a glorious first job. I was employed as a Field Assistant. I only started the title of a Geologist after my first four weeks. The best part of that experience was being involved in the discovery of Bronzewing Gold Mine in 1993 to experience what it was like.

Working with Ian Herbison and his team was the best education I had since starting this journey in 1988. Ian taught me everything that I hold dearly today. I learnt that management, understanding the cost and being dedicated to your task at hand are key.

My next fortunate journey was to be involved with the discovery hole at the Merlin Diamond project in 1994. I was the geologist on the drill rig then. Those two events in some way have edged my future passion for discovery in the sector.

The decision to be an Entrepreneur

What I am sure is that my drive to be an entrepreneur was starting to grow. My thoughts were simple then. I wanted to do my own thing and not be dictated by the mundane steps which rule the work of being an employee.

The Business of Feeding My Life

The common trait of my working life then was no matter how hard I looked for a “normal” job, I could not get one! I was incompetent at job applications, received even fewer interviews and often got a no as a reply to my application.

This was in the early 1990s. The lack of opportunities turned out to be the fuel for the successes that came my way in the form of all the businesses that were created to develop income for my life.

Perhaps those were the seeds for the creation of Samso Media.

Geological Computing Services in 1995 was the start of this journey.

29
BRILLIANT BUSINESS
Taiton Resources' Challenger West Project in South Australia

It was a consultancy providing clients with database and mapping services with GIS (Geographical Information Services). I later changed the name to Geocompservices and used that till Samso in 2018. The business moved from geological services to media.

Lessons Learned from Decades in the Trade

When I reached out into the world for entrepreneurship, I had less than five years of experience.

My motivation came from not being able to secure a “proper” job and the need to make money to survive. It meant I had to learn and absorb every piece of information that was thrown my way.

The time I spent at Bronzewing and the Merlin Diamond project was invaluable. I knew that there was a need for contractors. I learnt that if you have something to give, there is someone that will pay for it.

Wise words from the Man in the Hat to spur all us of on in our entrepreneurial endeavours! Experience Noel's in-depth conversations with thought leaders here in our Brilliant Investments.

DAVID LAZARUS OF PORT ADVENTURE CRUISES HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN ENTERTAINER

✦ David Lazarus loves entertainment, whether it be stage plays, live music events or parties. He loves to entertain and be entertained so that is what he does on his boat for others every day.

Even The Rhythmboat’s safety briefing is entertaining, and David adds a light hearted humour whilst providing informative comments about the focal points of the river throughout the daily cruises. During private functions, his role of the MC/DJ is one of his favourite parts of his job.

“ Without sounding corny, I love the feedback passengers give us when they disembark our boat after their cruise,” he said.

Note: Port AdVenture Cruises is hosting the Biggest Elvis Show on Earth with Father and Son Elvis team, Paul and Anthony Fenech. Sat 12 Aug 2023 8:00PM at the Darling Harbour Theatre, ICC Sydney, NSW.

Varied career path

David’s first job was a furniture removalist. “I loved the removalist job, it was very physical, lots of time was spent outdoors and it kept me strong for the sports I loved and played, rugby league and basketball,” he recalled fondly.

Port AdVenture Cruises

His next job was delivering hired TVs to St Vincent hospital in Sydney. It was during that time he became a part-time DJ, a pursuit that ultimately ended up being full-time. He worked with Donnie Sutherland, who had a National music TV show “Sounds” on the 7 Network.

"Donnie and that show opened so many doors for me. All of my skills and learnings were not formal, it just came from being part of the exciting disco scene starting in the 70s."

With Donnie live interviewing nearly every high profile act that came into Australia, David has either met personally or been backstage or in the same room with them too.

38

“I have kicked soccer balls with Rod Stewart, taken members of a great band called Bad Company waterskiing and shared a meal with Suzi Quatro. A lot of Australian rock stars know me by my first name (not just a Facebook friend) because many of them have performed on The Rhythmboat when it was in Sydney,” he told us. “And now, here I am in Port Macquarie, still working as a DJ on the boat that we own.”

The first boat or ship that David worked on as a young DJ was the Fairstar in 1983. Now, along with partner Elsa, he operates The Rhythmboat from the Clarence Street Wharf in Port Macquarie.

“Our boat is a public vessel and we have a massive obligation to ensure the vessel is safe and compliant with Maritime law," he explains. "Once cruising, it really is satisfying watching our customers enjoying themselves and watching the scenery changing every 5 minutes. You cannot do that on a land venue.”

David’s most memorable event

Jon English passed away suddenly due to a mishap on the operating table and he performed his second last ever show on the Rhythmboat. They had his official tribute at the Capitol Theatre and then all of his industry family and friends had their unofficial wake on The Rhythmboat.

“That was a very special gathering for us. While this was a sad occasion, to have a boat full of musicians and Australian icons, is something I will never forget,“ David said.

Fundraising for worthy causes

The vessel is a perfect venue for fundraising events and David and Elsa are in the position to provide their vessel for fundraising events outside our normal cruise times. The desire to offer this comes from a long history of community involvement for David.

Before he owned charter boats, David had been a strong supporter

of the Wayside Chapel and has enjoyed since 1983 being the MC / DJ at the Christmas Day gathering for homeless and lonely people.

“The first year there were only about 500 people and now they cater for about 2000 people who all enjoy a donated meal, a fantastic atmosphere and a street party where I get them dancing and hopefully put a smile on their faces. As an entertainer and now owning The Rhythmboat, being able to provide charity and fundraising events is something we are very proactive at doing,” he said.

Changes in the entertainment industry over the years

The biggest change he has seen is the lack of venues that are now available for talented performers to perform in.

c“Back in the day, every pub, club and so many live music venues all presented opportunities for artists to perform. These days it seems that venue managers have priority with gaming, food and beverage,” David explained.

“Most of my entertainment friends and colleagues now rely on getting work on cruise ships, which is good for them, but while it sounds glamorous, it’s not as though you can go home after every gig and spend time with your family.

39
BRILLIANT BUSINESS
David Lazarus ➸

“Also, back in the day, there were several music and variety shows on TV where performers could sing and enjoy exposure highlighting their talents. These days, the only way you get exposure on TV now is to be judged, which is not ideal. Now, even with exposure on tv, there are still not enough venues to perform.”

That’s where The Rhythmboat fills a void. It’s a throwback to the old days, presenting good old fashioned entertainment, where the audience is close to the stage and the show becomes an event. Cruise on the Hastings River while enjoying an entertainment show!

That’s where The Rhythmboat fills a void. It’s a throwback to the old days, presenting good old fashioned entertainment, where the audience is close to the stage and the show becomes an event.

Cruise on the Hastings River while enjoying an entertainment show!

Many events to enjoy aboard The Rhythmboat of Port AdVenture Cruises

cRegular cruises include the 2-hour Dolphin Spotting Cruise, which includes catering, while the Seniors Big Day Out Cruise is very popular, where Seniors get on board and enjoy getting involved in the trivia, bingo and entertainment provided. Currently in negotiation with the Players Theatre in Port Macquarie, David and Elsa are looking into providing a theatre restaurant style of Cruise called Dimboola.

“This is a play setting of a bush wedding and all the actors are the bridal party and the 'passengers' are the wedding guests. This play will be perfect for our boat. More information to come on that as it progresses further,” David told us.

A lot of the bands that have played aboard The Rhythmboat on Sydney Harbour in the past are booking future gigs in Port Macquarie. Plus, once Bob Downe finishes his very busy schedule, he will be back on board to share his amazing talent with us all again.

In between these events, the couple have a steady list of private function bookings and they are even getting bookings now for private and shared Christmas parties.

So, if you have been contemplating a Christmas party cruising the Hastings River, you had better book now to avoid disappointment!

Since David, Elsa and their fabulous team have been back in Port Macquarie they have established fantastic partnerships. “Collaborations with Port Macquarie EaTs, Players Theatre, Billabong Zoo, BrilliantOnline and too many other great businesses to mention, through their continued support of our endeavours, have helped us to provide a variety of cruises and events on our boat,” he said.

The Poseidon story began back in the 1960s and the legendary nickel boom that spiked the stock from a few cents up to over $280 before plummeting back to earth again by early 1970.

It hasn't always been smooth sailing for Poseidon - it has experienced quite a few storms on the journey to production, and it is gearing up towards a restart at a time of strong nickel price outlook due to EV revolution.

This is all set to change dramatically as the company reaches a key inflection point - making a Final Investment Decision and signing Project Funding and Offtake Agreements.

cPoseidon Nickel Limited (ASX Code: POS) is a nickel sulphide exploration and development company with three projects located within a radius of 300km from Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields region of Western Australia and a resource base of around 400,000 tonnes of nickel and 180,000 ounces of gold.

Poseidon owns the Windarra, Black Swan and the Lake Johnston Nickel Projects. In addition to the mines and infrastructure including concentrators at Black Swan and Lake Johnston, these projects have significant exploration opportunities demonstrated by the discovery of the Abi Rose deposit at Lake Johnston and the Golden Swan high-grade resource discovered at Black Swan in 2020.

Poseidon's Mission

Poseidon is committed to becoming a sustainable nickel producer, delivering value through performance and growth. The commencement of mining and processing at Black Swan is viewed as a first step in the Company's "Fill the Mill" strategy with the stated goal of growing the business to a 15ktpa plus nickel producer over the next 5-10 years.

Poseidon’s strategic pillars are:

• developing a pathway to production

• targeted exploration across its nickel asset portfolio

• considering proximal business development opportunities.

A Nickel Mining Story - Update - Poseidon Nickel Limited (ASX: POS) - Peter Harold

History

The Black Swan Project is located approximately 600km east of Perth and 50km northeast of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and 300kms south of Poseidon’s Windarra Nickel Project. The project commenced operations in 1997 and operated continuously until 2008. The following production was achieved:

• Black Swan Open Pit - 5.9Mt @ 0.7% Ni for 41kt Ni in concentrate

• Silver Swan Underground - 2.7Mt @ 5.1% Ni for 138kt Ni in concentrate

• Total production 179kt Ni concentrate

Poseidon's Business Strategy

The Company’s pathway to production got a boost in FY22 with two metallurgical breakthroughs which has greatly improve the economics of the Black Swan project.

1. The first involves incorporating a rougher concentrate regrind into its process flowsheet to significantly improve the quality of the smelter grade concentrate, which has resulted in improved nickel payability.

2. The second was testwork on a combined serpentinite and talc carbonate ore blend to produce a rougher concentrate which is amenable to both pressure oxidation and high-pressure acid leach to produce a mixed hydroxide precipitate.

This culminated with the delivery of the Feasibility Study on the 1.1Mtpa project to produce high grade nickel concentrate suitable for conventional nickel smelters. Refer to ASX Release dated 21 November 2022 "Positive Black Swan Feasibility Study". The Company is now working with a short list of potential offtakers and project financiers with the aim of reaching a Financial Investment Decision during the second quarter of 2023.

With the assistance of Poseidon’s geological consultants, Newexco, the Company completed an exploration targeting report with three high priority targets identified. Newexco is now preparing a drilling program and budget to test these targets.

Other Projects

There is significant infrastructure at Lake Johnston, including a 1.5Mtpa concentrator and the Maggie Hays orebody which contains 52,000 tonnes of nickel.

A comprehensive geological review of the Lake Johnston tenements has confirmed there are numerous targets that could generate more komatiite style orebodies and there is even the possibility of finding an intrusive orebody like Nova-Bollinger. A 15,000 metre RC drilling is due to commence in April to test the Western Ultramatic unit.

At Windarra, 25 kilometres west of Laverton, there is a significant resource base of approximately 150,000 tonnes

50

of nickel. The economics of mining ore from Mt Windarra and trucking it to Black Swan for processing is being studied. In addition, Windarra is highly rated in terms of exploration potential and it is intended to do more exploration there in the future. Newexco are preparing an exploration target report for the company.

Poseidon’s ultimate goal is to be mining ore from Black Swan, Lake Johnston and Windarra and processing these ores through mills at Black Swan and Lake Johnston to produce nickel in concentrate. The Black Swan BFS confirmed the economic viability of achieving that goal -:

The highlights from the BFS include -:

• NPV of $248M, free cashflow of $333M and an IRR of 103% at spot Ni and FX.

• Low pre-production capital – inc ~ $38M for the refurbishment (46 weeks construction).

• High grade nickel concentrate (15%) – good Fe Mg ratio – highly desirable smelter feed.

Poseidon's 3 Year Share Price

Transitioning from explorer, to having resources defined, to developer is not an easy path, especially for the share price. This graph charts that course but it looks like better times are ahead for shareholders and all associated with this attractive nickel development company.

Samso’s Conclusions

We believe POS is about to embark on that final, exciting phase of a mining company’s journey –commencing production. The long term outlook for nickel is excellent and Poseidon is virtually unique, globally, amongst all those prospective and near term producers. It has multiple existing nickel assets from average to high to super high grade ores and strong drilling exploration targets - and it has infrastructure valued conservatively at over $600 million replacement value.

The share price on the other hand, has waxed and waned at a relatively low level for more than a decade of trading, suffering from historical nickel price setbacks and this has induced a level of scepticism that, frankly, is unwarranted. Mr. Market values their shares at a paltry 3.6 cents, with a market cap of circa $120 million.

The experienced management team in place led by Peter Harold has been diligently working through all the necessary precursors to production and during that process they have unlocked enormous economic potential. It is our firm belief that Poseidon will be substantially re-rated this year and, therefore, there is a great opportunity to get in early ahead of key announcements regarding the FID and Project Funding and Offtake Agreements.

WARRIEDAR RESOURCES LIMITED (ASX:WA8) HAS AN EXCITING VMS PROJECT COMING

✦ This story from Amanda Buckingham, Managing Director and CEO of Warriedar Resources Limited (ASX: WA8) is about a project with limited deep drilling and a previous focus on gold only.

It's not everyday that we come across a great story. Noel Ong, CEO of Samso knew it was worth the wait. He reached out to Amanda Buckingham late last year, and finally got to meet Ms. Buckingham and hear her take on Warriedar Resources' journey now.

At that time, the company was still finalising their acquisition and in transition. Now the acquisition is complete, and the company's journey is looking even more interesting than ever. Right this minute, you're getting the exciting news straight from the horse's mouth here.

54 A VMS Story In
The Making, Warriedar Resources Limited (ASX: WA8) with Noel Ong

Warriedar Resources was once Anova Metals Limited. The company changed its name when they acquired the Murchison projects - Golden Range and Fields Find (see Fig.1).

And these new projects are making people sit up and take notice.

What's positive about the Warriedar Story?

1. Limited deep drilling.

2. Has a history of focusing on one commodity (gold) and one style.

3. Great location, adjacent to one of the most economical Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide (VMS) producing mines in Australia.

4. The area is also well-known for base metal (copper) mineralisation.

The average depth of drilling for the entire area is 42m, the historical operation was solely focused on oxide gold ore, no interest in any other metals and ignored all previous non oxide gold mineralisation.

This statement is what makes the company stand out.

The amount of drilling (more than 30,000 drill holes) that has been done would make one wonder if it's looking more like Swiss cheese now (Figure 2). However, when you consider that the average depth of the drilling is only 42m, which is almost the average depth of weathering in the Eastern Goldfields, you are looking at almost virgin exploration territory. This is almost unheard of in 2023.

Get curious and DYOR...

There are questions one could be curious to ask. What was done before the last owners of the projects? Right now what we do know is that the previous owner did not drill deep and they did not look for anything else

55
c
➸ BRILLIANT INVESTMENTS

other than oxide gold ores. Had they done anything that could be a liability to the project?

Another point to find out is whether the previous owners of Golden Grove sterilised that patch of ground. Practically speaking, it would be an enormous task to do that for an acreage of that magnitude.

You may also wonder about the many targets that could emerge due to the size of the project. One would need a very constrained strategy to focus on potential targets. Then again, if it does come to pass that the geophysics

swing towards the happy end, it would be a more positive problem of having so many choices and not knowing which one to focus on. With so many potential prizes, interpretation could be a challenge, but perhaps a happy one.

Samso Conclusion

For Noel, this is one journey he is keen to follow. Warriedar Resources has a good cash balance at this moment, and geophysics will play a big part with a lot of existing geochemistry to add to that strategy.

The biggest asset here is management. The people that lead this exploration need to understand the big picture and be commercial. The cost effectiveness of any exploration strategy is paramount. Ms. Buckingham has the right credentials to lead this type of exploration.

The projects will take centrestage. As has been said before many times, a combination of good projects and solid management is an attractive one for investors looking to safeguard their hard earned cash.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A MODERN MUM?

✦ When one decides to be a mother in our modern times, one takes on juggling skills that no acrobat in the Cirque du Soleil has ever been able to outdo.

Deciding to start a family can feel overwhelming and stressful for young women.

Abrilliant feature for Mother's Day celebrated in Australia on 14th May about Modern Parenting. Look into the head of the Modern Mum and you might just get dizzy. She has a million agendas all superimposed on one another and she can cross reference them in all directions. There's one for each kid, one for the husband, one for her family, one for the in-laws, one for work, one for friends. Her headspace is not one for the fainthearted.

So what does it take to be a Modern Mum in our time and age?

Can a woman have her cake and eat it i.e. have a family AND have a career AND feel fulfilled in both AND still retain her sense of self

without getting lost in 'roles'?

Is work life balance even real and achievable? Many mothers lament and feel torn that they have to go to work to earn money so they can pay someone to look after their kids while they're at work. At the end of the day they sprint home and may just squeeze in an hour's quality time with their child before bedtime at 8pm.

As a society, surely there is something really off that we're not able to have our professional development and build a family without sacrificing one or the other.

Modern Mothers are very much left on their own. We no longer have 'a village to raise a child' and if companies continue to be rigid with timetables, it forces parents to seek help elsewhere to look after their

children for long hours at a stretch.

An Anguished Scream

"How in the world do I find time to go to work (full time), prepare (healthy) meals at home, spend (quality) time with my husband, not neglect my parents or my in-laws, remember I have brothers as well, and oh wait I need to meet up with my friends, and did I mention I really need to go to the gym so I exercise and keep healthy, and I mustn't forget about the groceries, and I know it's healthy to have a hobby also, and I really want to go further in my career so I should probably do that training my boss has offered me but it's three evenings a week, and we need a break from work so we really want to travel too, and oh man there's the housework that's piling up...and.... HOW DO I FIND TIME

60

TO HAVE A BABY AND TAKE CARE OF IT on top of all of these things?!"

This is an anguished scream from many young women nowadays who are finding it next to impossible to imagine getting the support they need to become mothers. And we've not even touched on the financial aspect yet. Surviving on one income is just not an option for many families, which means mothers have to keep their jobs. With inflation and the increasing costs of housing and medical care, a new baby is going to require some financial gymnastics.

Let's face it. Having a baby is not the toughest bit. Many women DO want to be mothers. It's how to manage after having the baby that is the catch.

throw in the towel.

We've all met that Perfect Mum who seemingly has it all sorted out and her life is simply perfect. That's what we see on the surface. If you could see their actual lives you may well be shocked that they are not that different to you. They struggle too. They've just given themselves the added burden of appearing like they've got it all figured out. You don't have to.

to be a Mum, we didn't have to go to university for 6 years and do an internship for 6 months before we became 'licensed' to be mothers. No number of books and podcasts can prepare us to be one. It's really 100% learning on the job. And it's tough. It means mistakes will happen, we will mess up, and that's all part of the process.

Being

ca Modern Mum requires nerves of steel.

If you are a Modern Mum reading this, then what we have to say here is something you'll resonate with. And we just want you to know you are Simply Brilliant.

Bits of Wisdom from Modern Mums

We've put together little bits of wisdom from all the amazing Modern Mums around us who have experienced what it's like to balance both Career and Family. They have survived not just to tell the tale, but to thrive in spite of the struggles! For those who are contemplating starting a family and are facing the dilemma of family vs career, know that you are not alone and these experiences from Modern Mums may help bring you a bit of relief.

As mums we are simply all really trying our very best, and often, many things out of our control go wonky. It's just not possible to keep everything in place. Remember, you are a Mum, you're not Ice Cream. It's not your job to keep everyone happy. Motherhood has its frustrating manic side too. It's part of the package. And if you're experiencing it, it simply means you are a mother. It doesn't mean you're not being a good mum. And let's be fair, we don't have a Manual of How

At the end of the day, you will always be the best mum for your kids. You are not Lesser Than, or Not Enough or Too Much. You are Just Goldilocks Right for your kids.

"My kids sometimes tell me 'Mum! You're so beautiful!' when they come to my bed early in the morning and I'm looking a mess and I always wonder what they see. It is very touching though, and I have to remember sometimes to look at myself through their eyes instead."Azu, 40, HR consultant and mother of two.

BRILLIANT COMMUNITY

You have found your tribe who get you.

New mums, choose your tribe wisely. You do not want to surround yourself with 'Shamers' who insidiously patronise or pity your situation as a struggling mum. Modern Mums get shamed for just about everything. Not putting in extra hours at work. Not attending your kid's ballet recital. Not being the right weight. Not making homemade cookies for your kid's fundraising at school. Not doing enough selfcare. Not giving your kids organic food etc. etc. etc.

It's a huge relief when you can be raw and vulnerable with close friends who get it. There are days when you do feel more than just upset and fed-up with kids and husbands and work. You just want to run away, escape and fantasise about being on a quiet island where you can just sleep for 10 hours straight and have someone bring you good food and you can do whatever you want with no agenda to manipulate and no deadlines to rush to. It doesn't not mean you don't love your kids, husband or work. It just means you are tired, stressed, overwhelmed and could really need a break and some help.

You are going to have dark days, and it's important to find a safe space with supportive people you can express your feelings to and seek refuge in. And who don't mind that you're going to have crazy hair, messy clothes and have a good solid wail peppered with quite a bit of swearing. In fact, they'll just sit next to you while you have a go. And there'll be Kleenex, tea and your favourite cookies after. They'll think no lesser of you for being like this.

the media or trends recommend or what other people think.

We don't all have the same husband, same kids, same job, same families, same background, same experience. We're not in the same boat. More accurately, same sea, very different boats. We are all so different, and yet we seem to think there's some magic golden manual out there for How to be the Perfect Mum and if we were to just follow it everything will be peaches and cream. There is no magic manual. And that magic manual can definitely NOT be found in social media or trends. We all want to look like Marie Kondo with the immaculate house and kids. Even the great Marie Kondo herself has admitted that she has had to change her priorities because of her kids. Someone commented, "It's the fall of a mythical figure!" when news of Marie Kondo giving up on her perfect tidying came out. Rather than see it as a fall or admitting defeat, why not see it as getting real?

The image of perfection is more damaging than kind to mothers. So Marie Kondo has decided for herself what is truly important to her now, and she's taking the step to not follow even her own trends of keeping the perfect house.

Because each of us has such a mix of situations and conditions, we all have to choose for ourselves what is best for our families. New mums often get bombarded with unsolicited advice and opinions. Try to keep your ear canals as clean as possible so you can let these things pass right through you. Trust yourself to do what is right for your family. Even if it looks different to the norm, and even

are Perfectly Imperfect.

Our society has a strange obsession with Perfection, which is one of the biggest myths ever generated. There is no perfection. Yet as Modern Mums we feel that is our goal. We're expected to deliver a baby one day and boing-boing-boing our way back into a svelte figure in a week. Because that's what we see famous mothers do on Instagram. Unless your baby gets delivered by Amazon Prime otherwise any human mother will tell you with some deliveries it's like through hell and back. Your body has been all mashed up and it takes time to put it all back together again.

Perfection is actually rigid, unforgiving and restrictive. Being Imperfect allows for flexibility and adaptability, another two superpowers Modern Mums have. It's not about forcing the perfect family holiday. It's about still having a good time in spite of hiccups and changed plans. Adaptability allows you to salvage a challenging situation instead of letting tempers fly and wanting things one's way.

Like those tests on the Internet that want to know you are not a robot if you can identify all the pictures with traffic lights, if you are imperfect it's just a great litmus test to prove you are 100% human and not alien.

You can play to your strengths.

What are you good at? This is a really important thing to do regularlycheck in on yourself, what are your wins? No matter how small, they matter and are worth celebrating. Perhaps you're really good at organising whether it's schedules or housework. Perhaps you're the one people at work turn to when they've got a nasty problem with a client and need your perspective. Some are just a whiz at calming the children down. Whatever it is, give yourself credit.

Every day. Especially on the days when it feels like others do not see your efforts or strengths and have not been able to show appreciation. Be your best cheerleader.

You don't feel guilty for taking Time Off for Me.

Modern Mums are not machines. You cannot run on empty, and you're not expected to do it all 24/7. Since the pandemic, many have noticed an increase in the amount of work, and in the speed of work. Meetings have increased and seem neverending. Deadlines get tighter. Everyone wants things faster (or yesterday). There are 200 emails in the Inbox with their big bold letters screaming " Look at us! We are all urgent!" (and don't forget

the incessant beeps of Whatsapp messages on your work phone and your personal phone). Many Zoom from one meeting to the next from breakfast till lunch and have not had time to do any work yet, and still feel they have to squeeze in an hour at the gym between work and then run back again for a work presentation. If we used to talk about the proverbial hamster wheel keeping us in a loop, nowadays that same hamster wheel has a F1 motor attached to it and is spinning at 100 miles per hour.

And that's just at work. When Modern Mums get home there's another whole new arena to manage. Being a Modern Mum you need the stamina of a long distance runner. It's for the long haul and runners will tell you there are times when they need to

just walk and not run. Heck, if you're going to be running for 4 hours straight there'll come a time when perhaps you need to stop and pee or hydrate! Taking time off for yourself is simply necessary, practical and wise. Sometimes the demand comes from ourselves, and not from our bosses or children. We tell ourselves that to be a good worker or a good mum we must be available all the time. We're not Siri or Alexa. They don't have to change diapers, clean up vomit or prepare a mega presentation to win a new client or risk losing their jobs.

Time Off for Me is a tough one, so start small. Perhaps just 5 minutes only to breathe and do nothing. Guilt is a creepy and sneaky foe, and it will tell you that precious 5 minutes should be spent playing Lego with your kids or answering that email that's been stewing in your Inbox for 3 days. When guilt speaks, tell it "Okay, I hear you. Now let me get back to my 5 minutes of doing nothing." Eventually you'll be enjoying a weekend away with girlfriends on a spa retreat, or going for your art classes every Wednesday evening. Guilt-free.

And really, your kids want a Happy Mum. Not a Super Mum. Companies nowadays are so big on mental health and wellbeing, they also know a Happy Worker is far more productive than one who is sick and stressed out. Fathers are given more equal conditions in paternity leave, and there is more flexibility in working hours and working from home to allow parents to have the support they need.

You know better than to Compare and Despair.

Office and neighbourhood gossip can be toxic. So-and-so went to New York with her husband... and we can only afford domestic travel. So-andso's kids won some national maths competition... and ours are struggling to keep up at school. So-and-so just bought their second house by the beach... and we're feeling the weight of our mortgage of our small apartment. So-and-so is only 30 and has already been promoted... and we're stuck with pesky clients in a routine position. So-and-so went on

a cruise with her parents for their anniversary... and we're so tied up with kids and housework we haven't visited ours in a while.

The funny thing is, whenever we compare we only compare with those who seemingly have more or are better. And it always triggers a bitter, sour feeling that makes us squirm on the inside, but we put on a sunny front and say how wonderful, how delightful it is others have such amazing fortune. So perhaps it would be kinder to ourselves to stop the comparison. We can logically conclude that yes, it's great others are enjoying

themselves, well done, (after all, we don't want others to suffer either!) and it is not an indictment of how we are and most certainly not an indication of our 'success' as mothers, workers, wives, daughters, sisters, friends. We can always step away from a conversation that is unhealthy and simply not engage.

You have the confidence to ask for help.

Asking for help is a strength not a weakness. It's simply a logical thing to do. It is respecting what you can

64

and cannot humanly do. When you take care of yourself, you are actually taking care of your family. You have your oxygen mask on so you can help others.

An important part of asking for help is also letting others see it. Men also suffer from having to be Macho Man all the time and children feel frustrated and helpless when they don't know they can ask for help. Let your family see you asking for help. It gives them permission to do the same. It generates a healthy reciprocity and empathy too.

CELEBRATING ANZAC DAY

✦ April is a month for celebration and respectful commemoration as we embrace both Easter and Anzac Day.

Anzac Day

Later in the month on April 25 is Anzac Day, a national day of remembrance established in 1916 that marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War, that, of course, needs no introduction.

What's On?

As always, there will be a series of events commemorating the occasion. Similar to last year, the main local service including a wreath laying service will be held on the lawn behind the Taree Old Bar Surf Club from 12:10pm. The official Anzac Day March will meet at the entrance of LANIS on the Beach Caravan Park between 11:30-11:45 am and will

continue along Ungala Road from midday. Those who wish to view the procession should gather along Ungala Road, event organisers urged.

Respects can be made at the Field of Remembrance, which has grown to approximately 300 crosses that consist of the names of our deceased veterans from the Old Bar and surrounding areas. It is an extra special place to honour fallen heroes where people are welcome to pay

their respects, take a stroll around the crosses and take pictures.

The local Surf Life Saving Club will also be staging a BBQ before and after the main service where an Anzac Day raffle will take place and Anzac Appeal pins and poppies will be available. Further afield the Anzac Day Dawn Service will be held at The Cenotaph in Martin Place, Sydney, strting at 4:20 am and concluding at 5:30am. People are welcome to attend in person or it

can be watched via live broadcasts from ABC TV. More information can be found at the Anzac Day Dawn Service trust website.

Shortly afterwards, the Sydney CBD Anzac Day March takes place along Elizabeth Street, ending at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park. The March begins at 9 am and concludes at midday. Details on the route and more information can be accessed at the RSL NSW website.

Anzac Day is an occasion of enduring importance within Australia, an opportunity for veterans, current service men and women and the general public to pay their respects to those who have served our country while honouring those killed in military and peace keeping operations. All of us at Brilliant-Online send our sincere thoughts, respects and appreciation on such a special day.

GOD SAVE THE KING BOOK REVIEW - KING CHARLES III

✦ For release just in time for the coronation on Saturday May 6 and as a gift for Mother’s Day on Sunday May 14: Susie Boswell previews a fascinating new profile of Charles, a compelling insight to the man and his motivations.

Easter Saturday just passed, the 9th of April, marked two years since the death at 99 of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II. In another milestone, Saturday May 6 sees the coronation at Westminster Abbey of their son, King Chares III, in his 75th year.

As a prelude, four days earlier, a new book is published: King Charles III, subtitled Our King: The Man and the Monarch Revealed … but it’s not only Charles who’s revealed in this frankly amazing volume.

Prince Philip … with a paramour? A romantic attachment? Girl friend, or girlfriend? To his - very - dying day! And with the Queen’s knowledge and aid.

The book’s author, Robert Jobson, “the godfather of royal reporting”, has covered the royals on Fleet Street for more than 30 years, is the author of numerous books about the family, including Charles’ first wife, Diana, and is exceptionally well acquainted with the new king. (He’s also the royal correspondent for Sunrise, seen regularly on Australia’s Channel 7). He has been in Charles’ close presence thousands of times and travelled widely and chatted with him exclusively one-on-one.

His “sources”, his “a friend of the Prince” and similar referees are as transparent as those of any journalist aiming to be at the horse’s mouth but also to preserve the anonymity, but also patronage, of the “source”. To achieve various scoops over the years - such as his world first, Charles and Camilla’s engagement - the author has

70
Just when you thought you knew everything there was to know - and then some, thanks Harry - about the British royal family …

no doubt needed to temper his thirst for breaking news with a degree of compromise with the “source”, or the source’s mouthpiece. To be willing to bend a little, or else be frozen out.

So it wouldn’t be unusual to expect Jobson to produce a hagiography. Indeed, Prince Harry dubs the author (in his own essentially ghost-written book, Spare) “Pa’s hack”. Yet Jobson records a hefty number of Charles’ known sins, as well as offering his own not always flattering character assessments of the both public, and private, man.

In his book published in Australia in coronation week, he tells the story of Prince Philip’s dying days. The Queen, so concerned at her husband’s lack of interest in life, contacted his “long term companion, Penny, Countess Mountbatten” (close in age to Princess Anne) “and asked her to join him at [Windsor] Castle”.

Penny, Jobson writes, enjoyed a “highly personal” relationship with the duke spanning many years and was such a part of royal life staff nicknamed her “And Also”, because Philip, on dictating guest lists for royal events, habitually added “and also Penny”. The Queen, Jobson claims, was irritated by talk of her husband’s “flirtations” but … hoped Penny’s

presence would help him regain his zest for life.

cCertainly the Countess is an attractive woman and, it seems, high-spirited and fearless. Although her husband inherited the ownership of their majestic mansion and estate, the couple separated following the Earl’s flight with another woman to the Bahamas. On his return, his wife confined him to live in a converted barn on the grounds. The Countesswho has long moved in the intimate inner royal circle - remains popular at the new King’s court, Jobson adds. Season 5 of the TV series The Crown, released shortly before last Christmas and the first season to be aired following the death of both Philip and the Queen, dipped its toe tentatively in this particular water with a somewhat clouded reference to the extent of Philip and Penny’s rumoured liaison (the role of Penny played by Natascha McElhone, mistress of Hotel Portofino). TV’s “Queen” snarls when Philip admits he’s had to seek “companionship” elsewhere.

But then there’s William, Goody TwoShoes Wills. Jobson paints a picture of the heir to the throne who’s failed to inherit the intellectual rigour of his father’s side of the family but has instead (along with Harry) inherited his mother’s bad temper. The son had once spoken so “forcefully”read “rudely”- to his father that it left Charles shaken, Jobson writes. A profile emerges of an often-petulant William, on pretty petty issues.

Charles aims to spend as much time as possible with William and Catherine’s children, for example with George in the garden of his home, Highgrove. He refurbished a tree house once enjoyed by William and Harry for George to enjoy. William, as thin-skinned as Harry perhaps, felt his father was using George’s popularity in what could be seen as a PR exercise

- which baffled Charles, as the thought had not even occurred to him.

When Charles added an expensive cubby house-style furnished shepherd’s hut in a wildflower meadow for George, then two, William was again annoyed the fact became public. He even complained if photos of Charles appeared with a child in the background, without being “cleared” by William first. “He can be a control freak”, according to a royal household source. Another is quoted: “He can be difficult. He’s a driven person and that can make him impatient. He does not possess the intellectual capability or patience of his father. It can make him short-tempered when dealing with his father”. “He lacks his father’s charm, too,” said another.

Charles, staff explained, has a temper if he’s frustrated but it flares and is forgotten in an instant. With William it’s rarely forgotten. And: his default position is always: “It’s difficult ...” The pair has had fearsome arguments over the preservation of artefacts in royal collections when it was judged, in an elaborate euphemism, that William “should have chosen his words more carefully” in his frank exchange of views. Many who know William’s “stubborn streak” believe he will do what he wants when he becomes king, despite his father’s position.

stick to make a brief appearance before being returned, out of sight, to the chair.

Much of the book’s appeal emerges in reading between the lines. Jobson is proficient at the British art of oblique understatement. One message above all that pervades the bookeven as its subject is Charles - is the Queen’s immense sadness in her final days, despite her lifetime of diligent service, caused by the actions of her grandson Harry. Then there is Charles’ own despair and heartache over his second son. And the revelation that sanctimonious Harry, albeit as a youngster, was guilty of racial discrimination.

And, moreover, there is the Queen’s own secret, to be hidden from the public at all costs: in her final year and months, her inability to get around except by wheelchair. How, despite chronic mobility issues and the agony of advancing myeloma, she would struggle to appear standing upright –but only after arriving in the chair just inside the Buckingham Palace balcony doors, or the doors to the room of her audience with the new British PM – then being helped with her walking

The book’s other not-so-apparent aspect is its deceptively simple narrative: Jobson uses the dates of events as the basis of relating each stage in his history of Charles’ life and of those around him, to tell his story, and in doing so conveys the continuum of Charles’ journey from birth to the throne in a flowing form, as if reading from the pages of a diary … by contrast with the episodic outbursts of “news”, good and ill, that

are the usual way the public learns of royal developments via the media. There is much to be impressed by in what we learn of Charles in this new release. Among his altruistic recent acts, we’re reminded, was his donation of 1 billion pounds to the UK Treasury, derived from wind farm projects on his Crown lands. The simple cover photo of Charles (only credited in small type at the bottom of the back cover) is remarkable for its portrayal of a venerable chap, his face a mixture of emotions – perhaps puzzled (at Harry?), perhaps sad (at the loss of his parents?), perhaps apprehensive, wondering as his coronation day arrives what he can achieve with such an inevitably and comparatively short time left to him on the throne.

NADIYA HUSSAIN'S CORONATION AUBERGINE RECIPE FIT FOR THE KING

✦ The coronation plans, code-named Operation Golden Orb.

• 2 teaspoons mango chutney, finely chopped

• 2 tea spoons whole milk

• To serve:

• A small handful of crispy fried onion

• A small handful of raisins

• A small handful of fresh coriander, thinly sliced

Method:

1. Start by putting the oil in a bowl with the minced garlic, onion, paprika and salt. Mix really well and set aside with a pastry brush.

2. Pop the aubergines onto a tray (they can overlap, that is fine). Take the oil mixture and brush the aubergine slices generously with the oil on both sides till you have finished all the mixture. Set aside.

Buckingham Palace says Prince Harry will attend the coronation service of his father, King Charles III, setting aside months of speculation about his presence. The coronation date on 6th May, 2023 will coincide with Archie's birthday.

Whatever it is, there's always food for the celebration.

Here, we are serving you Nadiya's Coronation Aubergine

"Aubergines often feature as a side dish when served at a table for dinner, but not here. We are taking this delicious aubergine, coating it with flavour, frying till tender and then drizzling over the simplest coronation dressing. It’s like dinner at my mum’s collided with my lunches at school to create this beauty," says Nadiya Hussain.

Serves: 4-6

Prep: 24 minutes

Cook: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

• 225ml olive oil

• 3 cloves of garlic, minced

• 1 small onion, grated

• 1 teaspoon paprika

• 1 teaspoon salt

• 2 large aubergines, sliced into 1cm thick slices (about 600g)

For the dressing:

• 200g Greek yogurt

• 2 teaspoons curry powder

• 2 cloves of garlic, minced

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

3. Put one large or two small (if you have them) griddle pan(s) onto a medium heat (these are great on the barbecue, too, FYI).

4. Griddle in batches on both sides. They take approx. 2 minutes on each side. You will know they are ready when the flesh looks saturated, less spongy and softer. Pop onto a plate, overlapping, ready to serve.

5. Make the dressing by combining the yoghurt, curry powder, garlic, salt and mango chutney and giving it all a really good mix. Add a few tablespoons of whole milk to loosen the mixture just a little.

6. Drizzle the dressing all over the top of the aubergine, saving the rest to serve on the side. Sprinkle with fried onions, raisins and coriander to serve.

Ingredients for the Yorkshire parkin:

• 300g golden syrup

• 300g unsalted butter

• 75g black treacle

• 300g soft brown sugar

• 300g self-raising flour

• 225g oats

• 3 whole eggs

• 15g ginger, ground

• 7g nutmeg, ground

• 7g mixed spice

For the strawberry jelly:

• 150ml strawberry juice

• 125g caster sugar

• 6 gelatine leaves

• For the ginger custard:

• 16 egg yolks

• 260g caster sugar

74

• 200g plain flour

• 1lt whole milk

• 20g ginger, micro planed

For the cream:

• 300g double cream, cold

• 50g icing sugar

• 1 vanilla pod, scraped

Candied pistachios:

• 200g pistachios

• 200g caster sugar

• 150ml water

For serving:

• Strawberries, roasted

Method:

1. (For the Yorkshire parkin) Melt the butter, syrups and brown sugar in a saucepan. Place all the dry ingredients into a mixer, on a low speed, and combine them. Add the wet ingredients and mix until incorporated. Finish with the

eggs and beat for 5 minutes, until smooth and pale. Bake in a lined cake tin, at 160°C, for 25 minutes.

2. (For the strawberry jelly) Bloom the gelatine in an ice bath and squeeze to remove all the water. Warm the strawberry juice in a saucepan with the sugar. Dissolve the gelatine and pass through a fine sieve. Add the malic acid.

3. (For the ginger custard) Place the milk and ginger into a saucepan and heat until just before it reaches the boil. Remove from the heat and leave to the side to infuse for 20 minutes. Whisk the egg yolks and the sugar together, add the flour and then pass the infused milk through a fine sieve into the egg mixture. Whisk together and then transfer back into the saucepan. Place the saucepan back on the heat and whisk continuously, until the custard reaches 85°C and thickens. Transfer to a tray and cover with greaseproof paper, to cool.

4. (For the cream) Add the icing sugar and vanilla seeds to the cream. Whip the cream to stiff peaks, then transfer to a piping bag for serving.

5. (For the candied pistachios) Preheat the oven to 170°C. Place the nuts on a baking tray and toast, in the oven, for 12 minutes. Pour the water and sugar into a small saucepan. Place it over a mediumhigh heat and bring it to the boil. When the temperature of the liquid reaches 135°C, or the syrup is beginning to colour at the edge of the pan, add the pistachios and whisk until the syrup has completely crystallised and coated the nuts. Pour the coated nuts onto a baking tray, lined with greaseproof paper, and allow to cool.

6. (For serving) Dice the Parkin into 1cm dice. Place 3 roasted strawberries in the bottom of the glass with the diced parkin. Add 90ml of strawberry jelly into the glass and transfer to the fridge, to set. Pipe a layer of ginger custard onto the top of the jelly. Pipe dots of the cream on top, until the whole glass is covered. Add the candied pistachios on the top, to finish.

KEN HOM'S CORONATION ROAST RACK OF LAMB WITH ASIAN-STYLE MARINADE RECIPE

✦ Ha, no Coronation Chicken during King Charles III Coronation ceremony on Saturday 6th May 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London

Charles will be 74 at the time of the ceremony, the oldest monarch ever been crowned.

Camilla, Queen Consort, will also be crowned at the same time during the historic event, which is the first to take place in nearly 70 years following the late Queen's long reign.

Buckingham Palace has released the tasty treats for everyone to serve at their street party. The recipes are: Ken Hom's Coronation Roast Rack of Lamb with Asian-style Marinade, Nadiya

Hussain's Coronation Aubergine, and Adam Handling's Strawberry and Ginger Trifle.

Here, we are serving you the Coronation Roast Rack of Lamb

"Here, as tender as it is, the lamb's distinctive taste is nevertheless robust enough to bear the East-West flavours of sesame oil, mustard, and soy sauce with grace and dignity. The recipe

represents the hallmark of modern Great Britain. Serve this lamb with roast potatoes and a green salad," says Ken.

Serves 4-6

Ingredients:

• Two 750 g (1 -lb) racks of British lamb, trimmed of excess fat

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

76

• 2 tablespoons peanut oil

• 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

• 1 tablespoons roasted sesame oil

• 2 tablespoons roasted sesame seeds

• 1 tablespoon sugar

• 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

• 1 tablespoon light soy sauce

• 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce

• 2 tablespoons finely chopped garlic

• 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt

• 1 tablespoon fresh or 3 tablespoons dry sage

• 120ml homemade or store brought chicken stock

• 2 teaspoons sesame oil

• 2 teaspoons sesame paste or peanut butter

• 2 tablespoons butter

Method:

1. Season each rack of lamb with salt and pepper. Now brown each rack of lamb in a nonstick pan with peanut oil for 5 minutes, turning frequently. Allow the lamb to cool.

2. Mix the marinade ingredients in a small bowl and rub the mixture on the racks with a rubber spatula. Marinate for 1 hour.

3. Preheat the oven to 230c (450 degrees, Gas Mark 8). Place the lamb racks in a roasting pan. Moisten the fresh or dry sage

leaves with some water and scatter them over the lamb racks.

4. Reduce the heat to 200c (400 degrees, Gas Mark 6) cover the lamb racks with foil, and roast for 30 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes if you want a more browned and crisp look.

5. Remove the lamb to a cutting board and allow the racks to rest for 20 minutes.

6. Skim off the fat from the roasting pan, add the chicken stock, and deglaze over a burner, scraping to remove the flavourful bits.

7. Add the sesame oil, sesame paste, and butter to the sauce and mix thoroughly. Carve the lamb racks, arrange them on a serving platter, and serve with the sauce.

✦ "To manage the challenges and thrive in the ever-evolving workplace, one needs to make their mental health a priority, whether they work from home or in an office with others."

Mental Health and Wellbeing in the workplace is a big focus this year as part of Work, Health and Safety, basically because more people are working off-site away from colleagues. I am consistently contacted by clients wanting tools to not only better manage their ever-evolving workplace, but to thrive within it.

And in doing so, also using these tools to better thrive in their personal life instead of just surviving.

My services draw upon my background in the corporate world, as well as my qualified knowledge and experience as a Counsellor, Life Coach and Meditation Facilitator, as well as my heightened intuitive ability.

I assist clients to identify blockages, shift mindsets and learn coping tools that are relevant, user-friendly and sustainable for them. Together we create a plan that helps them not only manage their challenges but creates positive longlasting change in their work and personal lives.

cSharing tools with my clients that help them to be self-aware, to adjust and adapt when needed, to help them stay grounded, disciplined, focused and positive in the workplace regardless of the changes they face, is what I do.

Working from home definitely has its benefits, but may not suit all personalities and so may be more challenging for some. There are factors to be mindful of for example; feeling isolated, getting distracted with social media, the television, household chores or chatting to a neighbour.

And working in an office with others definitely can have benefits as well, but can also bring challenges.

LIVING HEALTHY IN THE EVER-EVOLVING WORKPLACE

✦ “Do not be afraid of change; it is the only thing that’s dependable” - Japanese Samurai proverb

Change is inevitable. Without it we cannot develop, improve and advance, in literally every facet of human life. Sometimes change is nurtured, sometimes it is forced upon us. Regardless, it almost always leaves us in a different place or position, very much facing the unknown.

We all recall how COVID-19 tore through the world leaving chaos in its wake and reshaping much of our everyday lives as we now know them. While it had a devastating impact in numerous, far more serious ways, it absolutely reshaped the

environmental structure and day-today dynamic traditionally associated with the work place. It’s fair to say this has largely changed immeasurably, perhaps forever.

With April 28th celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we thought we would pause to take stock of the ever-evolving work environment in its current and latest guise and focus on some of the health and safety issues related to it, specifically in the white-collar sector. While “work from home” became de rigueur during the pandemic, it is something that has stuck for many.

Thanks to modern day technology innovation, that seemingly endless period of lockdown proved that many professions could still function without having to physically be in the office. As we slowly lurched to a level of normality, workers were reluctant to return to their previous routines of commuting and spending long hours within the office environment, with hybrid working becoming increasingly widespread and acceptable.

A World Economic Forum report in December 2022 highlighted a survey conducted by Ispos which showed that less than one in 10 favoured a full-time return to the office.

84
With April 28th celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we thought we would pause to take stock of the ever-evolving work environment in its current and latest guise

Whereas the exact statistics are nigh on impossible to ascertain, it’s safe to say the number of full-time office workers now is far less than at the start of 2020. And while working from home or in a hybrid capacity seems to be the favourable approach for most, it does come with pitfalls relating to health and, to an extent, safety.

One of the most obvious negatives of working from home is that it can increase inactivity. No more commuting, popping out for lunch, walking around the office from department to department, etc. For many, working from home literally brings with it home comforts where even dressing for work is dismissed as unnecessary, while leaving the house can be easily neglected. This is especially pertinent to those living in cold locations when, during the winter months, the temptation to keep the front door well and truly closed is a very real one.

Similarly, people could find themselves neglecting any form of fitness or exercise regime. A frequent past time for many would be a trip to the gym before or after work or perhaps a yoga, pilates or spin class during lunch. While subscriptions for home exercise regimes and virtual workouts peaked during the pandemic, it is not known how much of that was a fad and how much is still currently employed.

Diet can also potentially be compromised when working from home. In this day and age of instant gratification it is all too easy to order in food and it can take discipline to ensure that order is a healthy one.

85
BRILLIANT HEALTH
c
While “work from home” became de rigueur during the pandemic, it is something that has stuck for many

Again, those in colder climes are far more likely to adopt this approach than brave the elements. While the statistic is very much generic, revenue in the Online Food Delivery market is projected to reach almost US$1 trillion this year, an annual growth rate of 12.33%.

One of the most prominent aspects of working from home during the pandemic brought under the microscope was that of mental health. While many embraced not having to mingle with co-workers, there were an equal number who struggled with the absence of social interaction and for whom isolation at home (even if with their families) proved a very real challenge. As mental health has very

much become widely acknowledged as a genuine condition and threat in recent years, endless people felt the weight and potentially still could if they are working from home or even in a hybrid situation. Similarly, the new work environment has seen a shift in the traditional engagement of roles in that independent contract workers and freelancers have now become far more prevalent; indeed the gig economy has never been so ripe. There were a significant number of redundancies during and after the pandemic in a wide range of industries as the economic fall-out truly bit, leaving a sizeable number of people without work or having to turn

their hand to something altogether new. Again, whereas this was embraced by many as positive change and opportunity, it had a detrimental impact on many others, with mental health often compromised as a result. The notion of uncertainty and insecurity this new order entails leaves many in a compromised position, something that is especially worrisome for bread winners carrying mortgages, family obligations, etc. Another aspect of the new working from home/hybrid model is the increase in workload and the impact this has. Cut backs experienced in the past three years often resulted in additional work being farmed onto retained employees. Add to that the

86
One of the most prominent aspects of working from home during the pandemic brought under the microscope was that of mental health

almost round-the-clock connectivity that technology now affords us and the fact that many companies are global and thus operating across a myriad of time zones and we see a significant increase in workload which takes a very real strain. In this sort of scenario an inevitable, negative cycle is created where all the areas alluded to above such as exercise, socialising, eating healthy, etc are further compromised as time is in short supply and convenience often the answer.

Of course, like anything, it can go the other way too; many have adapted to the new work environment with relish, adopting much healthier lifestyles, structuring a schedule that

incorporates exercise, activity and healthier food options alongside work obligations. In short, they’ve found the right balance. However, in these tentative early days of the everevolving workplace, especially for those that may not have found the right balance yet, it is important to pay heed to potential pitfalls that vulnerable people may succumb to. We need to ensure there is an acute focus on supporting mental health and that physical health is not neglected – it is a time for gyms, wellbeing specialists and health food providers to step up and promote their goods and services like never before.

In conclusion, and as alluded to in the Japanese proverb at the outset, change may well be the only thing that is dependable in life - the past few years have been absolute proof of this. Be that as it may, the important thing now is to make sure that change in the workplace is supported by dependable, sensible and robust approaches that safeguard health and safety for all.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE AT THE DOJO

French national Alexis is a fourth dan black belt in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu with almost 30 years’ experience practising martial arts who has won a range of accolades at international competitions over the years. In 2020 he founded the mixed martial arts venue The Dojo at the lifestyle park Blue Tree in Phuket, Thailand where students between the ages of 5-18 years old are introduced and mentored in martial arts such as judo, jiu-jitsu and wrestling while learning the moral code of respect and honour associated with them.

“The objective of the dojo is to develop martial arts values and to create a dynamic fighter community in the north of Phuket,” commented Alexis. “The moral code of martial arts is to teach kids how to become a good person. It’s not about actually getting a black belt but more so about how to conduct oneself with honour and respect under the code of a black belt.”

Since the Dojo’s inception the number of students has grown steadily, as has the medal count. In November 2020, not long after opening and having only trained his initial group of students for a short time, the Dojo entered the National Jiu-Jitsu championships in Bangkok where the students emerged with an incredible 18 medals.

“We won eight gold medals, nine silver medals and one bronze medal,” an extremely proud Alexis recalls.

The achievement was all the more impressive given the team had limited practice time before prior to the national competition alongside almost 2,000 participants from all over Thailand.

Since then the medal count has been impressive. In August last year the team secured an incredible 31 medals at two provincial championships held in Phuket. The following month eight cadet and pre-cadet students amassed a total of 22 medals and secured the trophy for best national team at the National Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Thailand’s capital.

Further medal hauls were realised at the Siam Cup, Thailand’s premier Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament, the Australian International Judo Open in Perth, the Indonesia International Judo Open in Jakarta, the Philippines Invitational Judo Championships in Manila, the Sydney International Judo Tournament and the Singapore International Judo Championships.

Kenneth Thongsong became the first student from the Dojo to gain international recognition when he was selected to represent Thailand at the Asian Cadet & Junior Judo Championship 2022. He performed well enough at that event to qualify for under-16 age group at the Sarajevo World Championship of Cadets 2022 in Bosnia last July, an invaluable learning curve for the youngster.

90
✦ It is said that one should always lead by example and that is exactly what Phuketbased martial arts instructor Alexis Plantard does every day in charting the way for his legion of students.
c➸
French national Alexis is a fourth dan black belt in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu with almost 30 years experience

“Every student has developed incredibly well and the entire team at Dojo at Blue Tree Phuket has come a long way since we first started,” commented Alexis. “I am extremely proud of every single student and am very excited about what the future has to offer.”

Role Model

Back to leading by example. It’s something Alexis does to perfection, serving as a role model and helping each and every student understand the core focus of martial arts while becoming better versions of themselves. Encouraging and guiding others through behaviour instead of words and inspiring to emulate action is something Alexis has down to a tee.

He regularly competes at international tournaments, with notable achievements of late including winning 10 out of 13 contests at the US Open Judo Championship last July, on his way to claiming gold in the men’s 90kg class, bronze in the open weight category and gold in the team event for Europe. The tournament is the largest of its kind held in North Amercia.

He then won a bronze medal in the men’s 90kg weight class at the Chiang Rai Thailand International Judo Championship

in September, where over 200 athletes from 10 countries participated. Last month he won gold in the men’s under 90kg class age group and silver in the open weight division at the aforementioned Sydney International Judo Tournament, held at the Olympic Park in Homebush. However, while winning medals is a great achievement, it is not everything. More importantly, martial arts teaches students the moral code of honour and respect and how to conduct oneself. This was evident with Alexis after his quarter-final loss to Cameroon’s Dieudonné Dolassem at the Kazakh Kuresi Wrestling World Cup in Romania last September. A tough, experienced opponent who carried 10kg more weight than Alexis, Dieudonné had represented his country at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“I may not have got the result I wanted but the respect he paid me afterwards was fantastic,” commented Alexis. The two then shared a meal and discussed their bout.

“We may fight like warriors but it is a gentleman’s sport contested with a robust moral code and high regard for honour and respect between its athletes,” he added. Alexis is very much a man who leads by example and his students at the Dojo Blue Tree Phuket are in very safe, capable hands moving forward.

Elena is a 20-year-old Spanish student currently doing her second year of Nursing in the university. She started

doing synchronised swimming when she was just six, thanks to her mother Milagros. Milagros was clear she wanted a team sport for her daughter. Milagros found a place where Elena could start doing more intensive swimming that would allow her to be chosen by a school to do synchronised swimming. In just a year, Elena was selected to join the synchronised swimming group.

You have to really want it

I wanted to know if synchronised swimming required certain special physical traits or characteristics. What Elena said I found really inspiring.

"You can always train more when it comes to flexibility or strength, but to bear with the difficulties and to continue wanting to improve and also to work well in a team, those are more important skills to have," explained Elena. Right now, Elena herself has become a trainer, teaching young adolescents to do synchronised swimming as a hobby. Not everyone necessarily wants to or can do synchronised swimming seriously. Those who wish to do synchronised swimming at the very top national levels have to go through strict exams before they can get there. In Spain, those who get to this level are in the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation.

You have to put in the hours

During a part of her training period, she trained 5 days a week, with training sessions starting at 6:00am7:30am (yes you read that right... in the MORNING) and then 6:00pm9:30pm on weekdays, and training on Saturdays was from 8:00am-1:00pm. During summer and holiday periods, training hours intensified.

The hours were scheduled so the children could still attend regular school that started at 8:45am. Elena was training an average of 24 hours per week.

I was really curious to know what motivated Elena all those years to wake up at such ungodly hours and jump into a pool of cold water.

"To be honest, I didn't really like getting out of bed that early! The thing is, knowing that I would be with my friends from the synchronised swimming club made me want to get up and get going. The relationship I have with these girls in the club is really different from what I have with my friends from school. We share a very unique, strong bond together."

And there we go. The all powerful human connection. "With my friends in the synchronised swimming club, we practically grew up together and we shared the same worries, fears, goals, desires. It's just not the same as what I have with my school friends. I'm a lot closer to my friends in the synchronised swimming club. They are a very special group of people to me."

Sport creating new hope and friendship

Hanging up the swimsuit

It must be serendipity that I managed to interview Elena now because she said this would be her last year doing synchronised swimming. She has clearly done way more than many have in this sport, and even taking part in the top national championships, and having a total of 45 medals over the years. Next year she would be in her third year of Nursing, which is very much her vocation now. Synchronised swimming has been an important part of her growing up years, and now she is focusing on building her career in nursing.

She's still happy right now to continue swimming mainly because she treasures the time she has left with her synchronised swimming friends and they always have a good time together.

Many professional synchronised swimmers or those who do it professionally stop at 26 or 27, so it is

a tough sport to continue with age. If she could start her life all over again, Elena would still choose synchronised swimming. "Working in a team for the same goal is a huge drive for me and I absolutely love it."

Nerves of steel

For Milagros, while she is clearly proud of Elena's achievements, she confessed that at one point she really wanted her to stop synchronised swimming. The training itself was tough and the trainers were even tougher. Milagros felt it was just too much for a child. So for parents whose children are involved in tough competition sports, they too need nerves of steel to allow them to keep going even though they'd much rather their children stop.

Just keep swimming!

What I took away from listening to Elena share her experience is not the fame or pain of top level competitions

but of her finding a group of people who shared the same passion and goal as she did, and to grow up together, supporting each other and building such a special and strong bond that allows them to see past the physical and mental challenges of what they do.

And the message Elena leaves us with is simply this - it's not about being special, or among the elite or being lucky to be born a certain way. If you're willing to learn and to improve every single day, you'll go very far. And as a very famous and well-loved fish once wisely said, "Just keep swimming!"
