BRILLIANT WOMEN’S HEALTH TAKING ACTION FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH - ROBIN WILSON, EDITOR

Even a global pandemic can have a silver lining, it seems. The resurgence of nature during Covid-19 lockdowns, with seas and skies emerging gloriously untainted after years of rampant pollution, is an obvious and tangible one. A more personal silver lining is the renewed focus on health and lifestyle adopted by many of us during these lockdowns. Although miserable isolation imposed by these lockdowns may have driven some in the opposite direction to find solace in comfort binge-eating, there’s no doubt that these situations have sparked real desire for focused, healthy living. And even those who binged on junk food to take away the pain have seen the error of their ways – and their waistlines – to swap their unwholesome lifestyles for more disciplined and healthy ones. So, with International Day of Action for Women’s Health soon to be upon us on Friday, 28th May, we take the opportunity in this issue of Brilliant to highlight some of the issues involved in the health of women.

FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS However, the issues raised by this yearly event go to the fundamentals of

women’s health, as opposed to more cosmetic ones surrounding weight gain and appearance. This day has been commemorated by women’s health advocates and their communities since 1987 – with women, girls, advocates and allies taking action and standing up for their sexual and reproductive human rights. Its first Call for Action, a multi-year campaign on preventing maternal mortality and morbidity, was an immediate success and achieved results on a number of levels, the most immediate being that it provided women’s grassroots organisations with better access to information previously only available through specialised journals. The campaign also brought to light important gaps in research data on women’s health, which led to more faceto-face meetings, seminars and research studies. And participation in this internationally-coordinated campaign brought the women’s health movement closer together at both national and international levels to strengthen the impact of the movement. At the same time, international bodies such as the World Health Organisation, the Pan American Health Organisation and the World Bank took up the issue under the theme of “Safe Motherhood,”

encouraging investment of funds to improve services and sponsoring seminars, training and research programmes. Since that beginning, the International Day of Action for Women’s Health has become recognised by governments, international agencies and civil society organisations around the world, with its annual collaborative Calls for Action focusing on a particular topic of women’s health. Over the years the topics have included: Access to Quality Health Care; Feminisation of Poverty; Access to Safe and Legal Abortion; Government Accountability in Prioritising Health Markets; Health Sector Reform and Women’s Health; Women and HIV/ Aids; International Trade Agreements and Women’s Access to Health; Violence Against Women as a Global Health Emergency; Young People’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights; and Access to Contraceptives. All these issues go to the heart of women’s concerns, and in an age when many feel that rights and values are being eroded and even violated, it’s more important than ever that they’re highlighted, discussed and acted upon. COME TO UTOPIAN LIVING AS A FRIEND MICHELE COOK

Michele Cook is the proud owner of a very unique Utopia in Wauchope Utopian Living which is located on the corner of High and Cameron Street in Wauchope. This shop was calling out to her every time she drove by, so she decided to lease it. So now, every morning when Michele opens her shop for business, she will greet it with a “Hello!”. And you should say Hello too :) “Everyone that comes to my shop as a customer, leaves as a friend” Michele delights in her creative process and while it brings her tranquility and emotional healing, she is also very lifted by the people who enter her shop, see her works and fall in love with her creations. She has created things that delight people. That is a great source of joy and energy for Michele. At Utopian Living, you will witness Michele’s creative fire inside her. Painting became her place of solace. Starting to paint again after 16 years brought her stability and peace among her canvases and brushes. She started making handcrafted jewellery and was letting her creativity lead.

THE UTOPIAN PROCESS Michele uses the style Dutch Pour in her artworks. This involves mixing her own colours and layering them onto the canvas and then blowing them out with a hairdryer or an airbrush or a straw. Each painting comes to life with its own body, texture and tone. Every piece is different and unique. It is in fact, impossible to create the same piece even if she wanted to, because the way the colours interact take on their own life force, and you never quite know what you could create. Nothing is forced or controlled, everything flows and there is a feeling of the essence of life when each molecule, each bubble, each wave, each fold take on their own form, shaped by its external conditions. Each piece is like how a human is born - unique, special and perfect in its own way.

UTOPIAN CREATIONS Michele’s handcrafted rings are a special favourite with many. She uses raw gemstones, diamonds and rubies set in silver in an organic and creative process. These are creations that make one want to wear always and to pass it on for years to come. Michele even has 100% Italian merino wool scarves. These are of course handmade by Michele. She is not one to sit back and get comfortable. Michele researched on clothes to see if there was an avenue for a niche. She found an American company offering a range of funky but not over-the-top pieces. It has a beautiful bohemian charm and ease, and every piece has its unique spunk and identity. This has since become a hot favourite with the community and Michele is eager for new arrivals. One reason why Michele’s Utopian Living is growing so beautifully is her ability to stretch out and explore. She likes supporting others who handcraft, reuse or who create beautiful pieces as a way to meet their own living needs. Michele’s exquisite silk bangle wraps sourced from India are an example of this. Her son travelled there a few years ago and met some ladies working in sari making factories. These women worked long hours for a meagre pay. At the end of the day, they collected their scraps of silk ribbon to sell on the side to support their families. Michele researched and found these ladies. After making contact with them, she now purchases from them and creates bangles from the silk.

8

Michele´s sense of community is clearly not limited by geography. Michele values pieces that have been lovingly made by hand and which has been created with the gift of time, skill and effort. Products mass produced in an assembly line are not her cup of tea. She loves looking out for the simple beauty of all kinds of common objects we often take for granted - handcrafted perfume bottles, leather belts, elegant light shades, candle holders and stands. She has sourced for these from around the world from artisans. As an artist and creator herself, she understands the value of a pair of hands of a skilled craftsman.

Michele’s travels to Turkey in the past have inspired her to infuse some of her pieces with their style at Utopian Living. What you will find here are organic, handcrafted items with minimal processing - Michele wants people to connect with her works at a natural level.

FIND YOUR TRIBE Michele loves her shopfront in Wauchope. It has helped her through some of her darkest moments and is now bringing her so much joy. Every moment spent in the shop, whether she is creating or attending to a customer or simply having a chat with someone who popped in to say hello are all moments that give her a sense of life and connection. Since opening the shop, many of her customers have become friends. The ladies from the Lighthouse Beach area in Port Macquarie are an example of this. One of them purchased a painting from Michele, displayed it in her home and her friends who saw it all wanted one too! This was just the start of these ladies bringing visitors to Utopian Living and Michele’s artwork have been brought to all parts of Australia. Utopian Living has taken on this magical connection because of Michele’s belief in the value of human connection. How people treat each other is key to living a fulfilling life and growing a business. People who step out of Utopian Living are not the same person they were when they entered the shop. It is a place that has a warm and empowering vibe. The way Michele interacts with every single person is key to this magic. Michele’s Utopian Living is not a separate entity for her. It is a part of her life and it is her therapy. She loves what she does and it brings her peace. This is where she is in her element, doing what she loves, creating and sourcing for beautiful things and meeting beautiful people. Her shop has taken on a life of its own. Michele greets her shop every morning when she enters, like an old friend, to a place where she feels safe and loving. This is her Utopia. Her Happy Place. And she created it with her own hands. The best part is, Michele gets to share this with her community, and the rest of the world. Utopia is not a mythical place. You can create it right here. Welcome to Utopian Living. On Earth. In Wauchope.

THE MECHANICS OF TREE HAZARDS ACCOMPLISHED TREE MANAGEMENT When we do not take care of our cars and send them for regular maintenance checks, the car can easily become a hazard and a danger to us. The same goes for trees in our urban environment. They cohabit with other greenery, with people, with buildings, with other urban infrastructure around them. These trees need care and maintenance for their own health, for aesthetic reasons and most importantly, for safety issues. We have shared about what happens when trees become hazardous and how home or property owners can look out for warning signs. Today we take you with us so you can see what happens on the arborists’ side of tree hazard assessments.

AFTER THE FLOODS Recently, Australia has, unfortunately, had to endure another battering of the elements and the floods have caused great damage in the Mid North Coast, New South Wales. It is not just the properties and infrastructures that have been destroyed. The trees around have also fallen victim to their own destructive forces of nature. Fallen trees, which are still standing but have heavy branches that are left hanging, can become hazardous and they need to undergo hazard assessments and management so they do not cause further damage to the property or infrastructure around them, or cause injury to people near them.

BREAKING DOWN HAZARD ASSESSMENTS Accomplished Tree Management is experienced with the hazards that trees pose and while they may be our passion and we are dedicated to their care, we also recognise they are large, heavy structures that need to be respectfully managed. Usually what happens is that the owner of the property where there is a problem contacts us and explains the nature of the hazard, how the tree looks and how it is “behaving”. As in the case of the recent floods, it is generally a weather-related event that has prompted the property owner to call us. So even before we actually get down to seeing the tree and assessing it, we already have some important information from that call. Accomplished Tree Management breaks down hazard assessments into two categories: •

Non Invasive (Stage 1) and

Invasive (Stage 2)

STAGE 1 - INTERPRETING BODY LANGUAGE What happens in Stage 1 assessment is reading the trees. This means observing and picking up any information the tree may give us, understanding the signs the tree is sending out. Trees have their own unique body language (and the beauty of it is each species of tree has its own way of expressing itself) and as arborists we understand what they are trying to say. Are some branches or even the entire tree predisposed to failure and cannot be saved? Any change in their environment can affect trees and they respond with their own signs to show if they are adapting well to the changes or not. So at this first stage of assessment,

10

arborists need acute and detailed observations. You can see Stage 1 as a merely visual assessment where we walk around the tree in question looking for any obvious problems e.g. broken parts, dead bits, any large cavity openings etc. We also use this initial screening to identify which trees need more urgent attention in terms of hazard level.

STAGE 2 - BRING OUT THE TOOLS Stage 2 of hazard assessments is an “invasive” one, and it involves having to physically manipulate the tree itself. We always work with care to ensure that it does not cause the tree any long-term harm. As long as we have not passed a final decision that a tree needs to be removed due to its hazard threat, we treat each tree with care and respect and our aim is always to ensure life carries on as best as it can. Depending on what each tree needs, we recommend two different techniques in Stage 2. One technique uses a Resistograph®. This may sound like a rather negative name for a tool, but it really is simply a specialised drill that creates a very discreet hole (approximately 1.5 - 3mm in diameter) in the tree. Think of it like giving the tree a tiny injection. It is essentially a decay detection equipment typically used at the more advanced stage of tree hazard assessments. This tool helps detect any internal decay in trees that cannot be observed from the outside. When the drilling needle passes through the tree, it records the resistance it encounters. So if there is sign of low resistance, this tells us that there is a possibility that a crack or an area of decay is present. This is minimally invasive to the tree and gives arborists useful information which we would otherwise not have access to. The Picus® Sonic Tomograph is another tool for this stage of the assessment. It uses the velocity of sound waves in the wood to detect and calculate the area of decay within a tree. Sensors mounted into the cambium (external) layers are placed radially around the tree and these activate the sound waves. If a tree has any damage or disease (causing fractures, cavities or rot), the sound waves get blocked and

do not pass directly through the wood. This tool is non-invasive and does not require introducing any instruments into the tree itself.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT Beyond the technicalities of tree hazard assessments, Accomplished Tree Management also needs to consider other factors when documenting the assessment. They think about if people could be exposed in the area of the potentially hazardous tree and how many, what kind of activities are taking place in the area affected and also how the terrain is where the tree in question is being assessed. Trees that have been affected by extreme weather conditions (e.g. bushfires, snowstorms, floods) are on a priority list to ensure they get assessed and if hazardous, they are removed before further damage can occur. If you are in an area that has been affected by the floods and are not sure how hazardous the trees are on your property, contact Accomplished Tree Management to see what we can do to check the hazard level of trees.

CHOOSING LIFE We have seen Australia battle more than its share of natural catastrophes. From bushfires to floods over the last year, we continue to bring our skills and experience to guide the safety of people on properties with trees and also to ensure the longevity of trees that can be left alone to heal, grow and flourish once again. Trees are our constant reminder that life is stronger than the elements. Seeing a fresh green shoot on a burnt tree and watching a tree survive cruel waters inspire us to go beyond our job to deliver the best of our experiences and expertise to our clients. It is a message to tell us to always choose life, even in our darkest moments. As Ralph Waldo Emerson so simply put it: “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”

CONVERSATIONS WITH KELLY AND LISA FROM LIFELINE MID COAST WOMEN’S MENTAL HEALTH, SELF CARE AND LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF FIRST CHECK IN ON A SISTER! Women are notorious for putting others needs before their own. Kelly Saidey and Lisa Willows from Lifeline Mid Coast believe that when it comes to mental health, it is important to prioritise your own needs and speak up when you need support. Around one in six women in Australia experience depression and one in three women will experience anxiety in their lifetimes. “Good mental heath is essential to the overall good health of women. Unfortunately, women experience some mental health issues at higher rates than men, these include post-traumatic stress disorder and eating disorders” says Lifeline’s Suicide Prevention Manager, Kelly Saidey. Kelly and Lisa are both working mums and understand the pressure of both working and looking after a household and how that can impact on mental health. Current stressors include COVID, financial instability and lack of childcare support, meaning working mums are feeling more anxious than usual and isolated, trying to keep the stress out of their work life. You have a people who are functioning at a reasonable level, and we are now seeing the impact of recent disasters has had on the workplace in terms of people’s ability to cope with any sort of challenges when it comes to their mental health,” says Kelly. “While working mothers are open to support, they also rely on the compassion of their employers. At Lifeline, we are so lucky to have a really understanding CEO with a family first policy”, says Lisa Willows. “We are always encouraged to phone Lifeline ourselves if we have anything that is weighing us down and we have managers who facilitate safe spaces for working mothers to have open and honest conversations about their needs.” So as a woman, how do you care for your mental health? “There are a range of ways in which you can improve your quality of life through caring for your mental health.”

KELLY’S TOP FIVE TIPS 1. Talk about your feelings 2. Include exercise into your routines 3. Eat and sleep well 4. Find ways to decrease stress 5. Ask for help

WOMEN’S MENTAL HEALTH, SELF CARE AND LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF FIRST

FEEL YOUNG BOWEN THERAPY IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO BE KIND TO YOURSELF ANISSA YOUNG, FEEL YOUNG BOWEN THERAPY EXPLAINS BOWEN THERAPY BOWEN THERAPY FOR WOMEN Women’s specific issues which can effectively be treated include; menstrual pain or irregular periods, endometriosis and Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hormonal migraines/headaches, hormonal imbalance. Constant pain can be minimised or completely diminished. Whilst not entirely women’s issues, Plantar fasciitis, bunions, thyroid issues, scoliosis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and gallstones are issues that can be dramatically improved with effective pain relief. Don’t be fooled by Bowen Therapy’s gentleness. It is gentle yet powerful. Bowen Therapy is a holistic treatment for all ages which helps the body realign and heal itself.

BOWEN THERAPY FOR MUMS AND BABIES

Apart from the standard injuries, anxiety, pain relief of any description (acute or chronic) allergies, skin conditions and a myriad of other conditions Bowen Therapy should be your standard go-to for holistic health.

And Bowen is helpful for all things baby-related. Pre-pregnancy with fertility Bowen to help your hormones balance, so there is an optimal chance for pregnancy. During pregnancy, Bowen Therapy can relieve lower back and pelvic discomfort. My sister, who is 26 weeks pregnant at the moment has been having Bowen weekly since long before her pregnancy. Bowen can also be administered whilst laying, sitting or standing, so it is perfect for mums to be that can’t lay on their belly. It is important that your body is as good as it can be inside and out for childbirth. And the baby can have Bowen straight after birth. It’s that gentle.

A typical first treatment includes realignment of the lower back and hips. Upper back and shoulders, neck, detoxing your kidneys and focussing on any other areas causing pain or discomfort.

Baby Bowen consists of several small moves made with one finger over the baby’s back and belly. It can help with sleeping issues, colic, reflux and feeding issues including torticollis. (Wry neck). I have had mothers call me in tears

Bowen Therapy uses light pressure, noninvasive moves over muscles, tendons and fascia over specific areas of the body. It also resets the central nervous system to prevent future injury and interrupts the pain signals going to the brain.

because their baby that hasn’t slept properly since they came home from hospital is tucked up in their bassinet for the first time. And home visits can be arranged for new mums. In fact sleep is a side effect of Bowen Therapy for all ages. I have clients who come to me just for the sleeping benefits. They can then deal with other issues, as they aren’t tired and irritated. Breastfeeding mothers having difficulty producing milk or mastitis can benefit from a Bowen treatment also. Baby and mum should always be treated together, as the baby will quite literally feed off mum’s anxiety. Bowen aftercare is pretty simple. Drink plenty of water to flush the lymphatic system. Refrain from hots/colds on your body, like wheat packs/heat creams or hot showers as these can interrupt the nervous system and undo the signals sent to reboot the system. BOOK ONLINE

WIN AT LIFE WITH A COACH IN YOUR CORNER UZMA FATMI HASAN, CO-FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR, AUTHENTIC VISION

People, especially women, put a lot of pressure on themselves by pushing themselves to conform to what the society expects of them. An increasingly fast paced society – all displayed, of course on social media – has only increased this pressure. The need to earn more, do more, show more, has conversely led to many of us somehow living less. Sometimes a journey inward is all that is needed to clarify what is truly important, allowing people to let go of all the excess baggage that they are carrying, leading to lighter, happier, and healthier human beings. This is where people like me can help. As a life coach (I have trained with CTI and am an ICF member), I help people connect with their values, their purpose, and their true self, while also identifying the beliefs that may be blocking them from achieving their dreams! In our conversations, coaches talk about their desired goals, and together we explore these aspirations, the journey, and possibilities to help them be more aware about themselves. This can be very liberating and empowering for them and a privilege for me to witness. As I like to say to my clients, “Dream big, for I will not let you play small!”

In my own case, it has helped me manage, and eventually reverse, my type 2 diabetes. What I love about TRE is that usually after three to four sessions with the provider you can do it yourself in the privacy of your home, and have it handy as your own personal stress buster.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF I live in Singapore; my birth country is Pakistan, and I grew up in Egypt. So, I am a veritable culture mix! I am a life coach, and a Montessori educator – so you could say that my passion is people – both of the little and big varieties! Human potential inspires me. I feel each of us is such a unique miracle and what if we realize how amazing and wonderful, we really are? What becomes possible then? Just the thought excites me!

NAVIGATING THROUGH THE PANDEMIC Another hat that I wear is that of a TRE® (tension relief exercise) provider. TRE connects people to an amazing natural stress releasing mechanism nature has gifted us through a series of exercises. This usually helps people to relax and manage their day-to-day stresses better, and it affects people differently! For example, TRE had a dramatic impact on a client suffering from sleep issues. In just a few sessions she was, in her own words, sleeping like a baby!

My husband and I are both coaches at Authentic Vision, and we work from home, so we just work around each other’s schedules. At the same time as these are our second careers, we have consciously planned time to give space to follow our interests.

a blank canvas that I took advantage of to try out things I would not have considered viable before. The lockdowns and restrictions gave me the opportunity to look closer to home. within the resources of my home to find my entertainment. To work via Zoom and it has been a game changer for me. It has expanded my horizons, geography is not an issue anymore, either for social activities or in the work arena. I have also come to appreciate the value of human contact. Of live conversations, being able to hug people. Having coffee or lunch with friends. The essentials which I had taken for granted earlier.

LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE Professionally, I am currently developing coaching programmes for educators and parents. I would like to see them launched. Personally, I would want to be in a COVID free world! Really!!

SOCIAL SISTERHOOD FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS NICOLE GALLAGHER

Finding it hard to fit the right balance of healthy pursuits into your busy life? Be inspired by this woman, who’s on a crusade to make achieving health and fitness goals a routine part of women’s lives with socially-focussed Boot Camps. Nicole Gallagher is a devoted wife and mother with an impressive sporting pedigree and a dedication to helping women snap out of sedentary lifestyles. A former Sydney policewoman, Nicole hung up her handcuffs to embark on a new career as a certified personal trainer and at the same time immersed herself in the gruelling world of triathlon. A move to Singapore with her husband 16 years ago opened up new opportunities – as a group fitness instructor with international gym brand Fitness First. She also launched her own boutique fitness and training brand, that included triathlon coaching and staging “Boot Camps” for women of all ages and abilities. This resulted in a client base across the globe, ranging from new Mum’s to elite athletes competing at world championships. Now settled back in the beachside Sydney suburb of Manly with her family, Nicole is focused on reshaping her fitness and training offerings for women keen to make real lifestyle and health changes.

ALL THINGS FITNESS Nicole has a deep wellspring of knowledge and experience to draw from in her quest to shape up women’s health choices. Nicole made her decision to leave the police and take a new career path after a growing interest in all things fitness began to intrude on her police work.

She became certified with extensive education and training resulting in her Diploma in Fitness, worked with Fitness First before setting up her own fledgling fitness company. Nicole’s husband’s career move to Singapore in 2005 presented the chance to develop her own style of training with new clients in a completely new environment.

TRIATHLON CHALLENGES Her husband’s decision to take up triathlon in the years prior to their move to Asia, piqued her interest to combine personal training disciplines, with competing in triathlons herself. This resulted in Nicole furthering her education to ultimately become an elite level coach certified by Triathlon Australia. Her company – Beats Per Minute, or BPM for short – was the end result, staging Boot Camps for groups of expat housewives like herself in Singapore, while at the same time managing the careers of leading professional triathletes like world champions Pete Jacobs, Tim Reed, Caroline Steffen, Flora Duffy, Holly Lawrence, as well as current stars Ellie Salthouse and Lucy Charles. Working with professional athletes, alongside ‘ordinary’ people harbouring a desire to transform their health though fitness, gave Nicole a keen insight into the needs of people with diverse athletic abilities and how to meet these needs with tailored programmes. Along the way Nicole achieved a pretty impressive triathlon racing record – in addition to competing throughout Australia and Asia she’s completed three full Ironman events and also the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Now happily retired from the racing scene, she crafts all her experience and knowledge gained over the years to help women target and achieve their personal fitness goals. “My training Boot Camps are first and foremost enjoyable social events for women to interact with each other while pursuing their own personal fitness goals,” she says. With a mix of face to face and online coaching, Nicole is passionate about utilizing her extensive background and knowledge to help her clients transform themselves and enrich their lives. “I love helping people to get fitter and it’s a real kick to see their journey of improvement. It’s also great to see women find the balance of fitness in their lives that works for them, and to be supported by everyone else in the group – it’s all a real collaborative group effort.” www.BPM-Sport.com nicole@bpm-sport.com

COACH NUSH ON ADDRESSING POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME ANUSHREE MAHAJAN - MPH, CHC, RYT

and over-exercising for the purpose of weight-loss which most often puts a large amount of stress on the body, causing an increase in stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, leading to an even greater hormonal imbalance.

MY STORY WITH PCOS

I’m a certified Health and Life Coach focused on addressing PCOS in a natural and holistic manner through sustainable diet and lifestyle change. My background is in Public Health and I am also a 200-hr registered yoga teacher. I’ve been interested in optimizing health through diet and lifestyle for several years now and have reversed all of my own PCOS symptoms naturally where traditional medical approaches have failed. Now, I am on a mission to help other womxn with PCOS do the same.

WHAT IS PCOS? PCOS/PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome/Disease) is a hormonal and metabolic condition that impacts 1020% of womxn worldwide at varying degrees. Certain genes can predispose a womxn to developing insulin resistance (lower tolerance for metabolising carbohydrates and sugar) and increased levels of androgens (male hormones) which is the root cause of the majority of PCOS symptoms. However, these genes must be turned on first and can be triggered by certain lifestyle factors or a stressful event. Even though PCOS is so prevalent, most people have never heard of the condition largely because many consider it taboo to talk about due to it’s oftentimes embarrassing symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, facial hair growth, hair loss, acne, fertility issues, weight gain - just to name a few. Unfortunately, traditional medical approaches to PCOS have proven ineffective and cause more harm than good in the long run, exacerbating symptoms. Some examples are the long-term use of hormonal birth control pills which can lead to greater disruption in hormonal balance and in some cases, has even been shown to cause PCOS. Another example is the recommendation for extreme dieting

I was first diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 15 because I hadn’t had a period for over six months. My doctor was familiar with the condition and because of the few other telling symptoms I had such as weight-gain, acne, and hairloss, he knew to test for PCOS. Once I received my diagnosis, I was told to take hormonal birth control and metformin/ glucophage (a pre-diabetic medication used to help manage blood sugar, commonly prescribed for PCOS) and to work on losing weight. I was also told that I will probably face difficulty conceiving in the future but not to worry about that for now - “just come back when you want to have children”. This was a devastating and overwhelming diagnosis to get at the age of 15 and I felt very helpless about how to move forward and address it. I wasn’t given any guidance or hope that there could be more done to alleviate my condition and due to that I ignored my symptoms as best as I could and took the birth control for 10 years. At the age of 25, when I decided to work towards a healthier lifestyle by practising yoga regularly, improving my diet, and getting off my medication - I saw significant results and improvement in my PCOS symptoms. I did all this through years of research and trial & error. When I realized I had uncovered a method of addressing PCOS naturally, I made it my mission to share this knowledge with as many womxn as possible. That is when I began my work as a PCOS Coach, Educator, and Advocate.

MANAGING PCOS Since PCOS is a lifestyle disease it can only be appropriately managed through sustainable diet and lifestyle change. PCOS cannot be cured, however, one can reverse their symptoms and balance out their hormones by addressing their nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, supplementation, and mindset. By doing so, one can live symptom-free with the condition. However, that doesn’t mean that the symptoms won’t come back when one falls out of balance in their diet and lifestyle. Hence, PCOS can be reversed but not cured. There’s no quick-fix or magic solution to managing PCOS - it’s a long-term game and requires complete physical, mental, and emotional well-being as all 3 of these things impact your hormonal balance and metabolism. Hence, it is important to focus on addressing your health holistically:

Nutrition - eating whole foods, minimising processed and packaged foods, eating nutrient dense foods like fruit/high-quality dairy, getting enough high-quality protein from eggs and animal meats.

Movement - strength training to build muscle (for insulin sensitivity), yoga to connect with one’s body and for relaxation, walking to get your body moving and blood flowing. It’s important to be mindful of overexercising when you have PCOS as that puts a lot of stress on your body and can cause an elevation in stress hormones.

Sleep - getting enough sleep and good quality sleep is essential.

Stress Management - practises that help you lower stress levels on a daily basis are so important for balancing hormones. Meditation, deep breathing, yoga, walks, self-care practises, dancing - whatever it is that gets you to destress.

Supplementation - taking the RIGHT supplements for PCOS can be helpful in providing your body with nutrients it’s missing. However, supplements cannot out-do a poor diet and lifestyle.

Mindset - it’s so important to address your relationship with your body when you have PCOS. Oftentimes, we think our body is against us and we are waging war with it. Diet culture perpetuates this and causes us to want to control our body. When we learn to love and trust our body and give it the resources it needs everything changes.

Each of these aspects of health can look different for everyone, and so a one-sizefits-all approach will never work. One has to discover what works for them and their body - that is EXACTLY what I help you do as your PCOS Coach. When seeking care for PCOS, it’s so important to work with someone who has expertise in PCOS or experience with working with womxn who have PCOS. It’s also important to work with someone interested in a more holistic root cause approach versus just treating symptoms. There is a MASSIVE lack in these kinds of professionals which is why I am dedicated to doing this work as a PCOS Coach, Educator, and Advocate. I share free information about PCOS via instagram (@coachnush) to raise awareness and to provide evidencebased practical advice to womxn who need help managing their symptoms. I also work with clients one-on-one to not only reverse their PCOS symptoms naturally through diet and lifestyle change but ALSO to significantly improve their quality of life. nush@coachnush.com www.instagram.com/coachnush/ www.linkedin.com/in/coachnush/

HARVEST YOUR HEALTH

BEVERLY MCCULLOCH, YOGA HEALTH COACH & THERAPIST, HEALING HEART YOGA a long-lasting healthy relationship with food for easeful and graceful living and aging. Body. Mind. Spirit. I’m a Certified Yoga Health Coach, Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist. My training is based in tradition with most of my study done in India, investing in my own wellness with a goal of being able to share the teachings to help others in their own healing. I’ve been teaching Yoga for over 13 years, have run teacher training, practice Yoga Therapy (personalised Yoga working on a multidimensional basis), I teach local Yoga classes and pre-COVID I was taking groups annually to India.

I’m Beverly McCulloch, the founder of Healing Heart Yoga, a Yoga centre based in Taree. My life is teaching, sharing and embracing the ancient teachings and wisdom of Yoga and Ayurveda, both thousands of years old and now being validated by modern science as some of the most effective ways to regain our full health and wellness. I have a clear life purpose – in yoga we refer to it as dharma. Supporting and guiding motivated people on their journey to reduce stress, live a life in alignment with rhythm of the days and seasons as well as their values and form

My main focus now is an online programme “Harvest Your Health: Change your habits, change your life” that introduces members to simple daily self-care and eating habits that help them regain their natural state of health and stay vibrant and healthy while realising their full human potential. I coach members on identifying their limiting habits and replacing them with ones that will support achieving their personal goals, whatever that may be for each individual. For members who are local, we have monthly face to face gatherings in my studio to maintain the connection and community of the group. It’s the group connection that truly empowers the women where they

all support each other. After 18 months of running this programme, the results speak for themselves. It’s not a quick fix – it’s a lifestyle for lifelong change. Whether it’s losing weight (and keeping it off), sleeping better, reducing anxiety, finding flow in your life – getting back the joy – it’s all there for us, we just need to have the skills to unearth it. I’m currently offering a special six month membership for the seasons of Winter and Spring this year as a taster for the full programme of tweleve months. Subject to many passing fads, that offer 30 day challenges (or less), it does take a lot longer to change habits. We repeat the daily routines every season – to adapt to the change in season and also to go deeper each time. It then becomes an automated habit. No more decision fatigue. It’s a truly transformative journey for everyone in the programme. You take charge and responsibility of your own health, relationships so you can live your best life. GEOFF AND LEANNE RETIRING IN A CARVER MOTOR CRUISER We were aboard a cruise ship where I was providing lectures to passengers when Covid hit. The route of the ship altered and then altered again and again before the directive was made for all ships to head for their home port. For us, that was the port at Southampton in England. Thus ended a 35 day cruise with 15 lectures that started asnine days with six talks. The cruise company flew us back to Brisbane where we underwent two weeks of hotel quarantine. On the second day of the quarantine, we realised that if we didn’t have something to do, we would go crazy, so we made the decision to join the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard in Caloundra once we were released. Leanne and I undertook and passed both boat crew training and base radio operator training but finding a rental property is all but impossible at the moment, so we made the decision to revert to our happy place and purchase a boat to live aboard and make our home. After much searching, we found a 43-foot Carver Motor Cruiser in Newcastle, NSW and are currently in the process of cruising her back up to the Sunshine Coast. Unfortunately, we have had some gearbox issues and have been “marooned” in Port Macquarie for the past five weeks. We have really enjoyed our time here though and have spent time exploring the city and surrounds. Meanwhile, our other boat is safely tucked away in a shed at a yacht club in the town of Meppen in Germany, close to the Dutch border and we’re looking forward to hopefully being able to travel back there this time next year. www.facebook.com/ContactRetiredAfloat

ENTERTAINME STREET DANCING

ENT MACQUARIE DANCE ACADEMY TAKES TO THE STREETS … WITH PASSION SABRINA TAY When music comes on, there is a natural, instinctive drive in each person’s body to want to respond to the music. A finger tapping rhythmically on the table is already a dance movement. A baby inside the mother has the urge to jiggle if she is blasting Elvis on her Spotify. Young people nowadays come fully plugged in to their music on the trains, their heads bobbing to the beat as they are transported in their private bubbles to an alternative dimension. Festivities across cultures include dance as part of their celebrations. Even birds use dance as a way to woo the fairer sex in their kingdom. So if you are feeling that urge to dance, anywhere from your kitchen to the streets is a good place to start. Macquarie Dance Academy (MDA) is a university society established in Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW where dancing is their shared passion. They are a student group that focuses on street dance culture and its art of expression. It was founded in 2007 to bring together people that have a passion for street dance and provide them with a platform to express themselves. Their members range from 18 to 26 years old and they are always on the lookout for people who have a shared interest in street dance. They welcome all university students to join MDA.

27

WHY DANCE? “Because you are alive. Actually, studies have proven that a regular active life improves and maintains mental and physical health. Across time and cultures, communities have often come together to dance as a way to connect with each other.” Sabrina Tay is a member of MDA and for her, life is centred around university and work. MDA is where she goes to get recharged with motivation and energy by dancing. It has trainings, events and showcases in the university and in the city. It gets Sabrina out of bed each day, and gives her the drive to go through her day. She always looks forward to sharing her passion with fellow street dance enthusiasts. Her close group of friends are also from MDA. Simply said, it is where Sabrina feels most comfortable and welcomed at. This is her “tribe”.

WHY KEEP DANCING? For Sabrina, it is important that MDA continues to nourish the culture and art of street dance as new generations of dancers come into the scene. MDA is a stepping stone for many onto the bigger scene of street dance, be it at the state, national or international level. MDA focuses on bringing foundational knowledge for those who have just been bitten by the street dance bug and it also provides consistent guidance in the form of classes, workshops, performances and competitions for more seasoned street dancers. To be able to keep MDA going, funding is also necessary. They get some funding through Macquarie University and they are also proactive in making revenue from their events, upcoming merchandises and fundraisers.

WHAT KIND OF DANCE? MDA does mainly street dance as a university society. They attend events, trainings and showcases. What makes them grow is how they also support other university societies whose focus is also on street dance. They see each other as fellow dancers coming together to share in the same passion and friendships are formed through their events and competitions. MDA focuses on street dance which is a generic term that can branch off into a variety of dance styles such as Waacking, Locking, Hiphop, Breaking, Krump, Vogue etc. There is a style for everyone. Which speaks most to you?

HOW TO DANCE?

MORE THAN DANCING

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

MDA trains as a community weekly at the university or at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC), Sydney’s Dancers Lane.

While dancing may course through the veins of these young people, they also have a healthy, balanced lifestyle where they spend time on their studies, work, friends and families and simply enjoy being a young person getting to know the world and finding their interests in life. Dance is their springboard into life. It is a space where they can discover, experiment and learn about themselves and each other as they find their place in the world around them.

We would like to thank Johnny from Photography JNY for these dance photos. Johnny is featured as one of the Top Sydney Photographers, 2021.

MDA has two crews in their society the Battle crew and the Choreography crew. Battle crew is freestyle-based and always has a foundational style. Choreography crew follows a learn and teach format and can be inspired by different styles of the choreographers’ choosing. MDA takes part in showcases and they also host Battles. They participate in events hosted by other university societies as well as battles and showcases outside of university. Basically, wherever there is a space and a chance to dance, you will find someone from MDA there!

Johnny had the passion for photography since 2013. His style is very diverse, adapting to the subject presented in front of him; shooting still-life and products that require meticulous attention to detail and precision, shooting dancers where timing is key to freeze action at its critical moment, shooting events where being aware of the surroundings lead to images that encapsulate a moment a time and shooting portraits that capture a person’s character and beauty.

“VIBEZ IN THE VINES”

ANNOUNCING PORT MACQUARIE’S NEW FAVOURITE BOUTIQUE INDIE FESTIVAL

Calling all music lovers! Port Macquarie’s freshest all-ages, indie music festival Vibez in the Vines has been announced for the long weekend, Saturday October 2 at Cassegrain Winery, as a refreshing new addition to the return of live music across the region. Never has there been a better time to hit the road for a three-day getaway in one of Australia’s most stunning places, the Mid North Coast. With its own unique charm and character, the single-day festival line-up is an eclectic mix of creative and adventurous music featuring both national and up-and-coming talent and headlined by legendary 80’s pop-rockers, GANGgajang, whose singles include Gimme Some Lovin’, Giver of Life and House of Cards, all which quickly climbed the charts to become part of the music revolution re-inventing the Australian sound and its place in telling our story. To The North, Ambulance Men and the perennial Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia) all echoed this new ethos in Australian music and defined our sense of place. GANGgajang is now regarded as one of the alltime classic Australian albums, while Sounds Of Then has reached near mythical status and continues to connect with new generations of Australian music fans to this day. Rounding out the line-up are The Lyrical, Karl S. Williams, Salt and Steel, James Bennett, Slippery Gypsees, The War Room, Jackson James, Ruby Blunt and the Doongang Dancers. Just four hours north of Sydney, Cassegrain Winery radiates a magical energy from the natural beauty of the forest like surroundings and laid-back environment. At sunset is where the heart of its beauty comes alive with thousands of fireflies filling the surrounding forest providing the perfect backdrop against the natural amphitheatre which offers a very intimate and personal connection with performers. “This is a feel-good festival - a celebration of being able to dance again and to once again feel free, even for just one day,” says festival founder, Lisa Willows. “We need to reactivate the festival experience and get people out and about again.” Vibez in the Vines will feature a great selection of food stalls, markets and workshops that will play a prominent role in the festival. “We are excited to host women’s circles, weaving workshops and Aboriginal mandala dot painting as well as feature some of Port Macquarie’s best primary producers. We are aiming to engage and inspire local and national communities. We have local business Hasting Co-op excited to showcase many of our region’s local primary producers in Co-op hampers, which are made up of fruit, cheeses, bread and cold meats. We have so much going on.” “We hope Vibez in the Vines becomes a muchloved family friendly event that draws people from near and far for it is unique programming and beautiful setting. It will remain grassroots in nature and will honour First Nations people in every way,” Ms Willows said. Tickets for the event are on sale now at www. oztix.com.au with a limited number of early bird tickets available. Children under 8 are free with a paying adult.

RAAF ROULETTES FLY OVER PORT MACQUARIE AT DUSK ROYAL TREATS ON THE GROUND AND IN THE AIR

Port Macquarie had a treat on Sunday 18th April 2021. As part of Port Macquarie’s bicentenary 2021 celebrations and the Hastings District Flying Club Open Day, the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes were at the HDFC new hangar displaying their PC21 aircraft and signing autographs. Another treat for the day was the Roulettes Aerial Display. Everyone gathered on the Town Green with bated breath to see these amazing pilots take to the skies and perform jawdropping aerobatics. We got to meet all seven Roulettes - Roulette Leader SQNLDR Jamie Braden (he has over 5000 hours flying time!), Roulette 2 FLTLT Nathan Stankevicius (this is his very first season with the Roulettes), Roulette 3 FLTLT Daniel Barclay, Roulette 4 FLTLT Ben Hepworth (also Ben´s first season with the Roulettes), Roulette 5 FLTLT Lachie Hazeldine, Roulette 6 FLTLT Mark Keritz and finally Roulette 7 FLTLT Aimee Heal (the team’s youngest and only female Roulette). The Roulettes had some lovely chats with the audience and also signed merchandise. The Roulettes definitely stole more than a few hearts that day with their performance and inspired children and youths to get curious about flying. Everyone who came together to make HDFC’s event come true all went home feeling wonderful and satisfied. It was a great turnout to celebrate the opening of the new hangar and it brought many people together in the community to share their passion, curiosity and interest in aviation. Keep looking up! You never know when you may know the pilot up there personally and can give a friendly wave from down below! We are delighted that HDFC’s new hangar is here to house many planes and breed pilots of all ages and backgrounds who share a genuine passion for the freedom of the skies. www.airforce.gov.au/displays/roulettes

TAKE TO THE SKIES FLIGHT LIEUTENANT, AIMEE HEAL

The Air Force Roulettes are a much-loved sight to behold in the skies in Australia and their presence always generates squeals of delight from children and gasps of awe from the crowd below. They were recently in Port Macquarie to do a display. We managed to pin down one of their pilots to learn more about what it is like flying in one of these amazing machines high up in the air. Flight Lieutenant (FLTLT) Aimee Heal is Roulette Seven on the Air Force Roulettes. She is the only woman on the team and also the youngest. She started flying at the local aero club at 16 years old. After she got her degree of Bachelor of Science at the Australian Defence Force Academy, she started on her pilot training course. She graduated from 231 Pilots’ Course in 2013 and has since flown the CT4, PC-9, King Air 350 and now the PC-21. Aimee loves flying the PC-21 as it is highly responsive and includes all the modern systems a large aircraft has and still has the aerobatic capability of a training aircraft. She loves the challenge of creating formations in the air with her team. This requires constant practice and fine tuning to achieve perfection. While people may be pleasantly surprised to hear about having a female pilot on a team of all-male pilots, Aimee goes through her day with her team, not even being aware that there is anything different in how she is treated. When people come together with a shared passion for the skies, the only thing that matters is each other’s professionalism, skills and experience in flying together as a team. The skies are certainly not too high to aim, as FLTLT Aimee Heal has proved. Every time the Roulettes take to the skies, there is a child or two down below watching who will be inspired to learn to fly as soon as they are tall enough to fit into the pilot seat!

HERE ARE SOME COOL FACTS ABOUT THE PC-21 THAT AIMEE HEAL FLIES: • • • •

• • • •

It is a Swiss-designed and built training aircraft. It is widely used by the airforce, the army and the navy. All pilots are taught on this aircraft and it is the model that a pilot would first go solo in. The PC-21 has two ejection seats also referred to as 0-0 ejection seats, meaning at 0 knots 0 feet on the ground, the seats can safely eject the pilots. The PC-21 goes at 370 knots, 685 km/h and allows low flying to 150 feet. It has a 16,000 shaft horsepower which makes it a really powerful one. The aircraft can pull up to 8G and has roll rates of 200 degrees per second. The PC-21 weighs approximately 3600 kg and holds 1200 pounds of fuel which allows the plane to go for two hours without refuelling. You can attach wing tanks on either side which hold an extra 800 pounds of fuel. This can stretch the flight time to nearly four hours. There are pods attached to the wings called ESG (External Smoke Generators) which create the smoke trails seen during flying displays.

PLANES LAND A NEW HOME

HASTINGS DISTRICT FLYING CLUB (HDFC) OFFICIALLY UNVEILED THEIR NEW HANGAR ON 18TH APRIL 2021

The hangar has faithfully served as home to many planes for the past 50 years. The newly furbished hangar was unveiled as part of Port Macquarie’s bicentenary 2021 celebrations. Leslie Williams MP led the official opening of the hangar. She had the help of a boy from the audience who was more than delighted to lead the countdown in unveiling the new hangar! This boy did not expect this day to be historical when he woke up that morning. He is now recorded in HDFC’s history!

GRANTED A HOME The New South Wales Government contributed $27,000 as part of a Community Building Partnership grant for the refurbishment of the hangar. The subsidy helped to make this new home come true for HDFC’s planes. HDFC has a 63-year long aviation history and is a much-loved element of the community. It is great fun spotting planes in the sky from the HDFC family of planes. Leslie Williams MP has been wonderfully supportive from the start, and she was delighted to drop by HDFC to share the good news when it was first made official that they were successful in gaining the grant for the refurbishment of the hangar. That was an important day for HDFC. Leslie Williams MP shared in the excitement and was thrilled to get into one of the red Slings on the ground to have a feel of what it is like to be in the pilot seat!

ALL ABOUT PLANES It turned out to be a gorgeous day for the opening of HDFC’s new hangar. It was a bustling day under beautiful blue skies as families and friends mingled at the club house and outdoors. There were lots to do and there was something for everyone to be interested in. Members proudly showed off their aircraft and clusters of people grouped around the planes to talk with the owners and sometimes even with the person who built the actual plane. In another area, there were queues to sign up for flights on HDFC’s Sling2 aircraft. There were many eager to take to the skies in the 30-minute discovery flights. Inside the club house and hangar house, visitors viewed historical presentations, radio control models, and plastic aircraft models. Tim Hitchins showed off his drones while others had their model aircraft there. There were many questions from young and old on these amazing flying machines. Many were also interested in getting information on flying training. CFI Ray Lind presented information on learning to fly and he even met up with his flying students past and present, like Chaitanya Randive and Jack Kalchbauer. You never know who your future flying students may be, and HDFC’s event

41 could well be fertile ground for budding pilots in the making, such as four and a half year old Henri who has set his sights high and wants to be a pilot! He was already very comfortable being in the pilot seat that day!

HOME FOR FLYING DREAMS Many in the community have grown with HDFC through their flying training while others have made HDFC their home for their passion that takes them to the skies. HDFC has been significant in promoting aviation, especially to the youths of the Hastings District. HDFC’s history dates back to 1958 and since then it has been a flying club and Recreational Aviation flying school. It has its own hangar and club house at the airport. HDFC has a range of social and flying activities that bring everyone together, whether they be pilots, families or friends, everyone is welcome. Activities such as Pilot Proficiency Day, Tri Club Competition, Fly and Spy, Sausage Sizzles, Restaurant Nights etc. make HDFC a warm and friendly place for people to gather and share their flying dreams. Many youths have trained at HDFC, confidently and proudly flown their first

solo and gone on to receive scholarships to pursue their career in aviation. Some such as Jayden Barker and Harry Freudenstein were not old enough to drive a car but they totally conquered their first solo flight as part of their training with HDFC. Dior Toppazzini is an example of how deep HDFC’s roots run. Her grandfather was an aircraft engineer on DC10s and her dad Doug is also a member of HDFC, maintaining HDFC’s aircraft and built his own aircraft. There is a growing group of young people who are keen to learn, train and fly, the contagion just spreads and HDFC fulfils the key role of providing a professional, supportive space for youths to believe in themselves and go beyond their dreams.

ROYAL TREATS ON THE GROUND AND IN THE AIR No event is complete without music, and visitors were thrilled to meet Z-Chords and singer-songwriter Pam Hata who got people up dancing and singing to her new music release WILD. Another treat for the day was the Roulettes Aerial Display. Everyone gathered on the Town Green with bated breath to see these amazing pilots take to the skies and perform jaw-dropping aerobatics.

KEEP LOOKING UP Everyone who came together to make HDFC’s event come true all went home feeling wonderful and satisfied.

HEALTHY EID RECIPES EID MUBARAK

Eid-ul-Fitr (which falls on 13th May this year) marks the end of a month of dawn to dusk fasting of Ramadan. The lead up to the celebration is looked forward to by Muslims around the world as they decorate their houses, prepare their outfits and of course, plan their menus! It goes without saying that a lot of the festive food is not usually light on the stomach, with deep frying being a prominent recipe step, and the generosity of the holiday also extending to the amount of sugar poured into desserts. But that’s not to say it’s impossible to have a healthy Eid! Below are two recipes to give you that satisfying flavourful meal, and to end the day with something warm and comforting as you relive the fun events of the day.

CHICKEN SEEKH KEBAB

HALDI DOODH / TURMERIC LATTE

Tender, juicy, tasty, and doesn’t weigh you down! These kebabs are very moreish, so make sure you make extra!

Not just good for your Instagram page, Haldi Doodh (literally: turmeric milk), is proof that good things come in small packages. This lightly sweetened, comforting and all around good-for-you beverage is perfect to help you recover from a day (or two) of feasting, and is jam packed with ingredients to help boost your immune system!

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • •

½ kg. finely ground mince chicken ½ tsp salt (or according to taste) 1 tsp chili powder 2 small onion – finely chopped 1/3 cup breadcrumbs 1 tbsp chickpea (besan) flour 4 green chillies, finely chopped 1 bunch fresh coriander, finely chopped ½ tsp garam masala 1 egg, beaten 1 tbs lemon juice ½ tsp ginger paste For serving: naan, chutney, raita, sliced onions

METHOD: 1. If using bamboo skewers, soak in water 2. Mix all spices/ingredients together (except chicken) 3. Add the mix to the minced chicken. Mix well, cover and leave in fridge to marinate for 3-4 hours. 4. It’s time to make the seekh kebab! Take a small ball of the mince, and pressing it around a skewer to form a long sausage shape (around 4 inches in length) 5. Bake in 200C/390F preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until done 6. Serve with naan, sliced onion, coriander chutney and raita (a yoghurt dip)!

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • •

½ tsp grated fresh turmeric OR ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric ¼ tsp ground cardamom 1/8 tsp ground black pepper ¼ tsp grated fresh ginger OR 1/8 tsp ground ginger 1/8 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp honey (or to taste) 1 cup milk of your choice

METHOD: 1. Heat milk in saucepan over medium heat until warm (not boiling!) 2. While milk is heating, mix all your spices in a small bowl 3. Add the spice mix to the warmed milk, whisking to break up clumps 4. Lower heat and let the flavours meld and intensify, around 5-10 minutes. This is also a great time to change into your pjs and pick out a book or tv show to unwind with! 5. Strain milk into your favourite mug. Sweeten with honey to your liking. 6. Get comfy and enjoy!

Tip: these can also be pan fried, cooked in an airfryer, or are also perfect for your next barbeque!

A SHOWER OF BRILLIANCE Births and New Beginnings are wonderful reasons to celebrate. Our Brilliant-Online first came brightly into the world of cyberspace three months ago and we decided to have a Brilliant Shower to celebrate that.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER We feel grateful to be able to hold our Brilliant Shower event and celebrate it with so many familiar faces in our community. It was originally planned for March but the floods came and for a period we could not think of anything else other than how to help each other and keep our spirits up. Brilliant-Online stepped in to offer free ads for businesses that had been affected by the floods. We wanted to hear their stories, share them with the community and help them to recover. As businesses gradually started to pick up, we were able to finally organise our Brilliant Shower event. Even though it was later than we planned, it was made even more precious because it really felt like we all worked so hard to get here and come together in spite of so many challenges like waves crashing upon waves. It has been a wonderful opportunity to have our community come together at our Brilliant Shower. And when we look at how everyone has a part to play in bringing Brilliant-Online to life and bringing our Brilliant Shower into fruition, it has given us so much drive and definitely something that is helping to charge our batteries to keep going.

COMMUNITY COMING TOGETHER We are overwhelmed by the support from our sponsors. Our Brilliant Shower took place in a space provided by Optex. We love our gift bags and My Blue Tea has made it beautiful with their super tea samples. Billabong Zoo gave us a $140 Family Pass which is the winning prize for those who subscribe to BrilliantOnline. We also had 30 passes for the RIU Round-Up Sydney Conference for investors on 4th, 5th and 6th May. Each pass was worth $1375 sponsored by Samso, who is our new investment story partner for Brilliant. We are also very grateful to Utopian BOHO jewellery maker, Barbara Smith of Roving Trainer and Hilberts Hardware who has been in business in Wauchope for more than 50 years.

GROWING A BETTER WORLD Brilliant-Online is about stories that inspire us to want to push for a better world in the digital era. Digital technology is not a cold and intimidating space. It is a rich, fertile arena for inspiring stories - this is where we can bring our interactive online magazine and blog stories which are reaching more than 10,000 subscribers around the world. We bring in stories from inspiring people and dynamic businesses, big and small discussing leadership, sustainable efforts, market and fashion trends, finance and investments, property, travel, love, humanity, pets, luxury, life. Brilliant-Online is a living, growing entity that is guided by a Moral Compass. It stands out with its human-ness and it has core values which are central to how we live as an individual and how we conduct business.
