St. Stephen High School— During the height of the pandemic students at Stephen High School with the support of their teacher Scott Legge launched Spartan TV (February 2021). The first episode streamed on CHCO-TV, a Canadian television station broadcasting in St. Andrews NB. The crew does all their own filming, editing, production and interviews. In the beginning the crew worked to help students understand the pandemic by interviewing Dr. Jennifer Russell Chief Medical Officer of Health of New Brunswick & Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada. They also supported Brilliant Labs in filming segments for b.Brillant & MakerFUN TV, with Ian Curran (Grade 12) as the host. Fast forward to this spring (May 2022) as Ian and Olivia McCray (Grade 12) joined journalists to interview artists at the East Coast Music Awards. Then the following weekend, with their teacher Scott Legge, Ian and Amélie Braham (Grade 12) went to the Junos in Toronto to interview the artists on the red carpet. From your friends at Brilliant Labs “Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your talents and adventures with us. We are looking forward to following your journey as you transition into the phase of your learning at university/college.” - Brilliant Labs will continue working with the Spartan TV crew and Mr. Scott Legge (Brilliant Labs: Innovation & Creativity Award Recipient, pg 55)
ECMA
Fredericton, NB—The East Coast Music Association (ECMA) welcomed Spartan TV hosts Olivia McCray and Ian Curran (St. Stephen High School Grade 12 students) to interview artists as they celebrate their craft and East Coast talent.
The crew interviewed many artists and were moved by their love of music. However, when it came to Olivia’s last interview with Mi’kmaw fiddler and winner of two ECMAs, Morgan Toney, she couldn’t help but be touched by his musical journey. From the elder who inspired him to combined his violin talents with singing to the 500 year old song Ko'jua that he and Keith Mullins ‘put their own spin on’. Olivia and the crew were memorized by Tony’s skill that comes with generations of heritage flowing through his songs. “He is so approachable and cares deeply about those around him”. Fawn replied “It’s OK to be proud of who I am, embrace my identity… It was always a dream of mine to have that influence on the indigenous youth, not just in my community but all over, to see the beauty in our people, the beauty in our practices, the beauty in our culture.” – Watch all the Spartan TV Backstage Junos interviews on CHCO-TV Spartan TV (UHF & Fibe 26 | Cable 126 | Bell TV 539 | YouTube).
