FEBRUARY ED LETTER
Welcome to February issue of BRINK. Its funny. A very long time ago I had this dream to start this magazine, the one you’re reading right now. I kept putting it off and then through some circumstances I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands. I put together some pieces, created a layout and searched for a name to call this publication. I wanted something that meant “on the brink.” Thus, BRINK literally evolved. Once I stared putting this online, friends would remark on how they really liked it and could see this as being a fit for our town. I happily agreed and felt that this magazine was needed here in Orlando. There is to much going on, there are too many interesting events and people going unnoticed. I took the last bit of credit I had and took the plunge on printing out BRINK for the Orlando community. Now, all I would like is for BRINK to grow. People to pick it up and read it and wonder who these names are that are writing these great articles. I want readers to inquire about artists and photographers and I want them to gain the recognition they deserve. BRINK is a platform for you. BRINK is for you. Keep reading, send us your thoughts and tell your friends. Enjoy this issue and we will see you in March! Kyle M Menard Editor-in-Chief

Walk about
WHO THOUGHT WALKING AND SHOPPING AROUND THE CITY BEAUTIFUL COULDN’T BE DONE? THIS WEEK WE HEAD OVER audobon Park on Corrine Drive and Winter park ave. from galleries to coffee shops WE PICKED OUT OUR TOP CHOICES AND WHY YOU NEED TO WALK ON OVER THERE.
Stardust. Ok, now I am not a regular Stardust patron, but the last time I was in there, it felt different. It felt good. Food looked great, its open and airy and the people inside were friendly and fun. Get in there, grab some eats, listen to some music, work on your lap top and take it easy. 1842 East Winter Park Road, Orlando
Park Ave CD’s is there with all their music and gift items, but there is also a trail of old and new shops in that area. From women’s wear Sweet Boutique to Bold Hype, you can seriously look hip and trendy.
Last week I visited this great little wine/food spot called Bikes, Beans & Bordeaux. It was delish, fun, and cute. The seating could use a bit of an upgrade, but the staff was ridiculously helpful and the wine was superb. There was a bike race playing on the TV and it was overall a relaxing evening at triple B. 3022 Corrine Drive, Orlando
The Audbon Park community market Great place to get some local organic food and items. From painting’s and jewelry to hats and clothing, check out this market which takes over the Stardust/Bold Hype/Shag’d lot o Wednesday evenings.
say HELLO
artichoke red 1813 N. Orange Ave. Orlando Artichoke Red is a new vegan market across from Rock N Roll Heaven and a few stores down from White Wolf Cafe. The small space is a big host to a variety of vegan and organic products. This is your local market to pop in, get what you need and repeat.
BLANK SPACE
201 East Central Boulevard
Back in November a new spot emerged from the old real estate company on the corner of Central Blvd and Magnolia. Across from our downtown gray as can be library stood a splash of color and design. Blank Space is Orlando’s “work space.” A spot that patrons can pop in, use their computer, work and then go back later for their art, wine and networking meet ups. Very cool spot. Only downfall was their coffee was absolutely dreadful and it looked like it needed a visit from Niecy Nash and crew. Otherwise, say hello and check this place out, especially at night with a glass of wine.

STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE >>>>>>>>>> Where we came from… When a man and a woman love each other very much… mag nation is the brain child of Ravi, Suchi and Sahil. We started in Auckland, New Zealand with a store called Mega Mags on Queen St. The devotion to slightly off the beat mags convinced us that there were enough silly magazine lovers like us to enable us to expand our magazine superstore concept. So we polished up our begging bowls and did a lot of busking.

JACKIE C IS OVER IT
by jackie c
Pimpin’ Disaster Victims
Most of us have watched on in horror these last days as more and more images of despair have come out of Haiti. And, as I watch a stoic Katie Couric from Port Au Prince and local reporters scurrying to interview those with relatives in the heart of the new “Ground Zero,” a part of me feels like hurling. No, it’s not because of the graphic scenes of the poor, dead people in the streets making me extremely thankful I don’t have hi-def cable. It’s because of one lingering thought: How long do you think it will take Hollywood to get in on the exploitation and make a movie about this disaster? Personally, I was disgusted when Hollywood made two movies about the events of 9-11. I still haven’t seen either of them and never will. Really, if their sincere motive was to pay tribute to the tragedy and it’s victims, why didn’t they donate ALL of their profits to the 9-11 victims or to our country’s current war on terror? Producers of World Trade Center donated a measly 2.6 million of it’s 99-million-dollar, worldwide box office profit, and United 93 producers donated just over 1.1 million of its 71-million-dollar bank. Those figures don’t even account for how much money key actors and filmmakers got paid just to perform their jobs. Pocketing all the dough made off those movies sounds like a pretty Republican way of acting for a bunch of Democrats, don’t ya’ think? That’s probably because the rich in both categories are actually very similar; they just have two differing philosophies on the best way to get rich at the expense of others. We should really just put them all in the same party and call it a day. I wonder what animal would be the mascot for the Greed Party? A shrew perhaps... maybe a badger? I know, a siamese fighting fish because it kills its own kind. But, Hollywood is not the only offender when it comes to pimpin’ disaster victims. Local and national TV are always leading the charge with their coverage over-kills in desperate attempts to pull
in the highest ratings possible. It’s not good enough for the networks to send one or two correspondents each to Haiti. No, they have to send a few correspondents, the main anchors from EVERY news show, AND they have to pre-empt regular programming for Haiti news specials because we couldn’t possibly have gotten enough info. about the tragedy the first five times we saw it during Nightline, The Early Show, the noon news, on CNN during my break, or the evening news.
The other night I had the absurd notion that I was going to take a break and watch Jeopardy, but what was on my screen when I tuned into the right channel? Elizabeth Vargas with more on Haiti, that’s what. Argh! All I wanted was a little mental/emotional break from the heartbreak I’ve been feeling as I watched this stuff all evening, but there is no escape! There is no Alex Trebek! Local TV news is probably more ridiculous. Is it really necessary to have a local reporter do a story about the disaster in general, which basically recaps all that’s been said by the national news all day and will be later said by national reporters in a half hour? I guess they’re all just so happy to overkill something else besides Caylee Anthony and freezing temperatures. Really, guys, that was annoying! It got to the point where I thought, “If I hear the terms ‘hard freeze’ or ‘recordbreaking temperatures’ one more time, I’m going to use my remote as a hockey puck or start a drinking game (Newsguys say “hard freeze” and it’s a shot of Don Julio, they say “recordbreaking temps.” and you chug the rest of your pumpkin spice brew). And, on top of beating dead horses, it seems like the local news will do even MORE humiliating things for ratings. Did you see the commercial tease where a certain local, blonde bombshell anchor held a really large, prizewinning cucumber and single-handedly did away with at least two decades of women’s lib.? I wonder if that phallic bit actually got more pubescent males to watch the evening news. The only way she could have lost more of her dignity for ratings was if she had somehow strategically placed the cucumber.
The media was bad enough during 9-11, they reached an all time high of ridiculousness during that whole Chandra Levy thing, they milked all they could out of Hurricane Katrina until it no longer garnered ratings, and now the people of Haiti have become their newest exploit to the point of utter ridiculousness. And, American media, we are OVER IT. You guys take redundancy to such a high, I don’t even think I can call it “redundant” anymore. I think I have to actually create a new word for this. Hmm... Since I like “ridiculous” so much, I think I’ll call it “ridiculant.” Add that to your Merriam Webster’s: ridiculant, adj. -redundant and overdone to the point of utter ridiculousness. The TV gurus apparently don’t realize that it’s one thing to put a camera and a reporter on the ground in Haiti so that information can get back to us in the states. But, it’s clearly another to put a large amount of employees in harm’s way in order to shove a disaster down our throats every chance they get in the name of sensationalism, ratings, and just plain greed. You think they really think about a reporter or anchor’s safety when sending them into the middle of a disaster? They don’t care. They just want the sensational footage, and if the reporter gets beaten, shot or killed, it just means more ratings for them because now they can do stories on that too and charge even more for advertising. For the big guys, it’s a win-win situation. You don’t believe me, google “Bob Woodruff.” At this point, my weak stomach can barely tolerate flipping on the television. So, I will be turning off the TV every time I need a mental break from the earthquake disaster (or from any normally “ridiculant” news coverage). And, if others in O-town (hint, hint) do the same, maybe the execs will see that “ridiculance” isn’t getting them ratings and then they’ll decide not to make a movie about this, to stop the coverage over-kill, and to bring Katie Couric home. I can dream, can’t I? And, if you decide not to tune out, I’ll start taking bets on the Haiti disaster movie release date. I got 20 bucks on January, 2013.

The city streets explode into violence when “The Man” kills Black Dynamite’s (Michael Jai White) brother in this seamless recreation of the blaxploitation classics of the 1970s. He was the best agent that the CIA ever had, but these days Black Dynamite only answers to one boss -- himself. When “The Man” ices Black Dynamite’s brother, starts pumping heroin into the local orphanage, and floods the ghetto with a secret weapon disguised as common malt liquor, the car chases, gunfights, and shirtless brawls that follow prove wild enough to make even Dolemite green with envy. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

SADE SOLDIER OF LOVE Known for their one of a kind timeless sound, Sade has enjoyed phenomenal success both internationally and stateside throughout the span of their twenty-five year career. The highly anticipated new body of work SOLDIER OF LOVE features 10 new songs including the latest single, “Soldier Of Love”. DAN BLACK UN 2009 debut release from the Paris-based Englishman. Un melds the musical attributes of Paul’s Boutique, Hatful Of Hollow and Supa Dupa Fly with a lost 80’s sci-fi soundtrack and is nothing short of brilliant. Tantalizing and stimulating eardrums, Dan Black has been hailed as Pop’s bright new hope by everyone from Zane Lowe to Perez Hilton and was a regular feature in the 2009 One To Watch polls. Now Black has updated and fleshed out his blogospherically massive Notorious BIG tribute ‘Hypntz’ into the fully fledged Space Pop anthem ‘Symphonies’. Fusing the ubiquitous beat from Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ with heavily chopped-up samples from the film soundtrack of John Carpenter’s Starman, this is a perfect, effortlessly joyous marriage of laptop hip hop with tip top Hip Pop. Behave Yourself EP
(mariah carey via twitter) Didn’t realize they put the champagne on the tables, So we WOULDN’T drink it! LoL. No, seriously ANGEL CHAMPAGNE (ROSE) by MC coming soon!
Since the first bass note of “Saint John” sent sound waves down my ear canal, I’ve been downright fiendish for the soulful, blues-infused sound that is the Cold War Kids. The follow up album to Robbers & Cowards, Loyalty to Loyalty, still left my eardrum hankering for the music induced euphoria. With that, patience, and both full-length albums in constant rotation, the nostalgia has been slightly stalled by an EP which includes three previously unreleased tracks. “Audience” begins with a Cold War Kids-esque piano stomping piece accompanied by ardent vocals that are reminiscent of the single “Hospital Beds”. The song carries subtle romantic undertones and is “a song for the lonely person who wants more and knows they’re brilliant in a way that only they can see their own inspiration,” says frontman Nathan Willett. “Coffee Spoon” measures out a guitar-driven song with two teaspoons of despair that leaves a bittersweet aftertaste. The track “Santa Ana Winds” takes on more of a laid-back tempo that lyrically suggests a profound appreciation for where the band first firmly planted their roots. The hymn-like track “Sermons” is a re-recording of the track “Sermons vs. the Gospel”, which initially appeared on the With Our Wallets Full EP. The hidden version that materialized on the first full-length album remains the most intimate with thought provoking themes paired with falsetto vocals that channel the likes of Jeff Buckley and Bob Dylan all captured on a shoddy recording. There were absolutely no regurgitated, halfhearted efforts in this release. The CWK are going somewhere and before long their going to be playing to a lot more then an audience of one. Let’s just hope that their fame doesn’t reach U2 status, where concert tickets and merchandise are equally overpriced and the artists have lost all

Ladies, Ple with Stephanie Crisan
I know we see crazy makeup all the time in the media. From the outlandish Lady Gaga to the imaginatively made up faces walking down the runways at fashion week. However, just because you see it in a magazine, on television, in a music video or on the runway does not mean it is right for your everyday life. I am not saying makeup can’t be fun. I love bright colors and a dramatic look but only if you know how to wear it.
So ladies, please don’t . . .
1
Do not wear a super bright eye shadow color and a super bright lip color and super bright blush. It is TOO MUCH. Go with a bright eye color and a soft lip or a muted eye color and a bright blush and lip. Balance it out or I am afraid you will end up looking clownish.
2
Do not wear a dark lip liner and no lipstick. I know it used to be a popular look but it REALLY does not look good. Lip liner should match your lip color or maybe be one shade darker.
ease Don’t
3
D o not wear a pastel e y e shadow without putting on some mascara or eyeliner. I am not saying you have to go heavy on the mascara or liner but without any you look washed out.
4
Glitter. Just don’t. Shimmer is great, I am all for the shimmer but glitter needs to stop by age 18 (and that is even pushing it in my opinion).
5
Lastly, black eyeliner (my favorite makeup item). If I had to give the rest of it up eyeliner the one item I would keep. But PLEASE do not go overboard. Different eye shapes and sizes require different amounts of eyeliner and if you use too much it will smudge all over and you will look like you have been crying hysterically, are a sloppy drunk or are just plain awful at applying makeup.
PRACTICING A C C E P TAN C E
by LORI PARKS
Why do we feel stress? It is simply our resistance to our present circumstances. Take the example of running late and getting stuck in traffic. Our muscles tense up, we experience shortness of breath, we may experience road rage, we become obsessed with our clock and that the flow of traffic is barely moving. From experience, will any of these reactions help with the fact that we are stuck in traffic? Hopefully you’re shaking your head side to side, indicating a “No...” Instead, we can practice acceptance. Take some deep, slow breaths, relax, play some great music and mentally say to ourselves “This is where I am at, there is nothing I can do right now about the traffic, I choose to accept where I am at right now.” When we feel stress or any other negative emotion, this is signal for us to become aware that we are resisting what is. Once you are aware of what you are resisting, you can practice accepting it. Soon you will feel a positive shift in your overall emotional state. This can be applied to all situations in which you become aware of any negative emotion you are feeling such as anger, sadness, worry, jealousy and fear. And there is no need to judge the emotion either. Just
remember the cycle: Awareness, Acceptance, Shift. Peace be with you.
Passage inspired by readings from the book “The Language of Letting Go” by Melody Beattie and the website www.dailyom.com.
>> Check out these other great selections It’s no wonder that The Power of Now has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has been translated into over 30 foreign languages. Much more than simple principles and platitudes, the book takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, “the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death.” Featuring a new preface by the author, this paperback shows that only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment. After years of spiritual study and reflection, inspirational speaker and bestselling author Wayne Dyer has emerged a highly esteemed teacher. His current message about tapping into the power of intention may sound like good old positive thinking: just stay focused on what you want, rather than focusing on the lack of having what you want. But the teaching here goes deeper than just controlling thoughts (although he does acknowledge that thought control is a surprisingly challenging and significant endeavor). This book might help readers land a better job, but it’s more relevant for those who are ready to detach from an ego-driven life filled with quick fixes of happiness and step into a more authentic, joyful, and spiritually fulfilling life. His core teachings speak to tapping into a universal source of energy that can also be called the “power of intention.” We are all students in the “Earth school,” according to authors Gary Zukav and Linda Francis in The Heart of the Soul. And the time has come to create a whole new lesson plan. For thousands of years we were outwardly focused, as we mastered the tasks of cultivating food and building shelter. Unfortunately, we are still outwardly fixated, obsessively accumulating more wealth, material objects, and power. “What enabled our species to survive so long is now bad medicine. In fact, it is poison,” according to Zukav and Francis. What we need now is an inward focus, in which we cultivate the heart and live in alignment with our souls.

Listen up, Brink readers; this is your chance to chime in. This is February, the “month of love” and I started thinking about that whole subject… a great deal. Personally, I think the notion of Valentine’s Day is a little sad. No, this isn’t the rant of a bitter singleton. In fact, readers, The Rant, is more about your voice on different matters. It is an opinion, a springboard to engage you in conversations, to inform you, maybe even, to inspire you to think about different topics floating in the space around your life. Kat Peabody isn’t a complainer. You need to know that up front! But I digress. Let’s get back to love. First of all, don’t just celebrate the love you share with your special someone on February 14. Celebrate that love everyday. We don’t know how many days we have on this planet, so make the most of each day, each moment, if you have been blessed to have someone love you and better yet, are blessed to be given the opportunity to love them. Get intentional! Showing love doesn’t have to be expensive, over-the-top or even categorized I am smitten with the hope that in the traditional. Do something. Those actions really do go very love brings to the table. far. I know, as a woman, actions go further, oftentimes, than words. I am not a man, I can’t speak for men, but many men I’ve known, from varying backgrounds, lifestyles, and temperaments, have also acknowledged that they really appreciate those special, personal things that their partners do that go beyond the words, “I love you.” I realize that the above statements really cater to those who are in romantic relationships. I have a responsibility, as a single woman, and as a person who tries very hard to look outside herself at the world around her, to address other loves. Our hearts are tied to a great many people and missions. For some, we are intensely connected to family, friends, kids, pets, our work, social organizations, charities, spiritual groups, neighbors and nations of the hurting and enslaved. There are moments when we have to put aside the romantic ropes that tie us up for an instant in order to focus on the other loves 25
in our lives. When we lose focus, we lose our purpose, our grounding. For some, giving yourself away to those who are deepest need are greatest ways we can love, at least in the moment. Here are some places you can go and get your love by showing your love to others; especially those who are in dire need in Haiti: www.compassion.com ; www.wfp.org ; www.theIRC.org ; www.harvest-time. org It is important to know who you are and what you really want before you try to bring another person into the mix or move forward to pursue the passions within yourself. It is at the moment when you know yourself in the most brutally honest way, and you accept each part of your character, good and bad alike, that you can find the freedom to share yourself fully with others. One key to remember is to be honest with yourself and others. I pose a question here. How honest is too honest? Is there a line that you shouldn’t cross in this thing called self-disclosure? For me, I think I’ve fluctuated from one side to the other way too much. As a rule, throughout the existence of Ms. Peabody, I have been brutally honest. I would hold nothing back and I usually said what I thought in the manner that I observed. I wouldn’t always recommend this approach. I’ve hurt others I never intended to hurt because I put a little too much emphasis on the brutal part of the honesty. And then I grew up, changed, transformed into someone new. I suddenly found myself focused more on doing what I needed to do to make someone happy. In its pure form, there isn’t anything wrong with that. We should go the extra mile for our partners, with one important exception. Does going the distance for someone else make you a better partner, or do you lose yourself entirely? Sadly, in my quest to keep a love alive that never needed to happen to begin with, I lost so much of whom I was, even the good parts. I guess this was another huge change in my journey. Remember how it is important to know who you are before you love someone else? It is jointly important to not forget who you are in the midst of that love. The truth is that there is something really spectacular about you that, in the beginning, intrigued the other person enough to fall for you.
We come to where I feel I am now. I survived an abusive relationship. I’ll be at least that honest with you, as I won’t go into the details of the different types of abuse. I learned the mistakes I made in that relationship were as destructive to me as any of the poor choices he made with us. Here, sometime after the relationship’s demise, I’m still standing. Honestly, I didn’t realize the strength I’ve been given. I went through a season when I lost sight of my belief, my security and the attributes instilled in me that are actually quite awesome. It is hard for me to always acknowledge that there are great things about myself because of where I’ve been and the messages that have been spoken over my life. Yet, dear readers don’t believe all of those messages. There are things about you that were instilled in you uniquely. What do you choose to do with them?
It is at the moment when you know yourself in the most brutally honest way, and you accept each part of your character, good and bad alike, that you can find the freedom to share yourself fully with another.
Love is really important to me. I really love to love others. I am smitten with the hope that love brings to the table. That’s right, I said smitten! I know myself and I won’t compromise who I am for the “sake of love” again. Pure, true love will allow me to be as honest as possible; only now, I don’t feel the need to be so brutal. I’ve mellowed, softened and yet, I’ve remained focused in the years since my heart was broken down and then restored. It is crucial for me to go after the desires of my heart. That pursuit has taken me different places, meeting different people. The journey even brought me here to Orlando and I believe that someday, it will take me somewhere far, far away. Lovers, here is some honesty for you. These are helpful tips that will ignite your love deeper for those in relationships, inspire you to have courage for you who are not in a relationship and begin
a thought process for those who have a great many loves they want to pursue.
1
Write a letter. This is more for those of you in a relationship, but this can always be modified for a family member, a friend, anyone significant to you. List something you love most about them for the number of months you’ve known them. For example, if you have known and loved someone for 13 months, list 13 distinctive traits about them you adore. These could be simple things, like how you see something really kind in them or you love the way their nose crinkles when they laugh. You love their awesome, adventurous spirit or how, when they plan their future, they make those plans with you in mind. Make it personal and intentional. It just may be a letter they keep for the rest of their lives and pull it out when they need a little extra encouragement.
2
Spontaneously plan out a day of the other person’s favorite things. Maybe this is attending a sporting event, running a marathon together (even if you are not the best runner), a surprise lunchtime meeting, or volunteering at their favorite charity with them (that’s a big one on my list at least- showing love to others together helps strengthen the bond of your love for one another). Once again, this isn’t about flowers, candy or expensive gifts. It is about knowing who you are in your relationship and knowing the heart of the other person.
3
Make a Mix Tape! This is a cliché, I know, but it is really awesome! Music is incredibly important to me and it seems to be a universal language that connects people from every walk of life, in every location. Pick out the songs that remind you of that special someone, whether they are cheesy, sappy, standard, edgy…if they bring to mind that person who brings you joy, add it. I’ll even get you started with just a little sampling of some songs that remind me of several different loves in my life, from romance, friendship, family, and groups. I won’t give a synopsis of each song, but they are worth a sampling to see how you like them. Their words are like poetry. “Red Meets Blue”- Matt Wertz -artist with a cause, check them out at www.mochaclub.org “Show Me Heaven”- Tina Arena
“Makes Me Whole”- Amel Larrieux- a particularly beautiful song

“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”- Lady Antebellum -artist with a cause- see above “Just My Imagination”- Gwyneth Paltrow and Babyface (my preferred version); original by The Temptations. “Long White Dress”- Thomas Wynn and The Classic. Sweet. This is a song of longing. You can Believers- Orlando, this is one of your own and they get the Gwyneth Paltrow and Babyface version by are great, find out more and plan to hear them live checking out sites with access to the soundtrack to at www.yspace.com/thomaswynnandthebelievers. the film “Duets.” One to try is www.amazon.com com There you have it. Now, we want to hear from “Closer to Love”- Mat Kearney you about how you will “come and get your love.” Find “Edge of Desire”- John Mayer- whether you love or us on Facebook and add us as a fan! Then send in your response to the question in the title: What are your heart’s hate him, the man is mega-talented desires and where would you go to satisfy them? You can “Story of A Boy”- Between the Trees- another great also contact us through our site at www.brinkmagonline. com. Your answers can inspire others. We will put some Orlando-based band, www.betweenthetrees.net of those answers in the March issue too, so check it out. “Beloved One”- Minnie Driver- She isn’t just an I leave you with this final thought. Be courageous. Guys, actress. Her voice has a haunting quality. pursue. Trust me, it’s sexy! Girls, don’t let your fears keep “I Will”- Mozella- everything here is sexy, seductive, you stagnate. We all have fragile hearts, we’re all afraid of rejection, but we will never know unless we give it a try, sultry, a perfect expression of some of your most right? Regardless of your past pain, you can heal. And personal feelings when you heal and you meet someone whose smile makes your previously broken heart flip as if nothing ever chained “Sweet Thing”- Keith Urban it, nothing ever happened to damage it; you’re ready to take this journey again. Only this time, these loves may “Selah”- Lauryn Hill be the most important of your life. You may find yourself “Turn Me On”- Nina Simone- one of my favorite jazz going after love like you have never before and, believe singers and one of the sexiest songs you’ll ever it or not; you may actually find what you need, what you never expected. ‘Til next time, Orlando, be courageous! hear. It will go on your “list” for sure. “Someday”- LaRue- a beautiful, spiritual song

February Can Go Screw Itself and the Horse It Rode In On - or How American Idol Helped to Steal the Massachusetts Special Election
F
BY Jonathan Woodard
ebruary, I hate you like a fat kid hates celery sticks and low-sodium rice cakes.
This was the first and only line that I had in mind when it came to an article for the February issue of this fine periodical. As that this is written in January, I find myself now composing these words on the night of Massachusetts’ special election to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. An election that may very well hold the fate of a National Health Care re-form bill from becoming reality. An election pitted between a little known up and coming Attorney General, diligent in her pursuit of justice and the betterment of the people and a little known State Senator who has worked diligently for his constitutes best interest (subsidizing a golf course in lieu of authorizing aid to 9/11 Red Cross workers), drives a truck, posed nude for a 1982 issue of Esquire (as some sort of Pin-up contest winner) and also happened to father a semifinalist from the 2006 edition of American Idol. These are somewhat shallow sounding points, but in essence they compose a lot of the bulk that was cast around as this whole thing went down. That and crude half hearted attack adds, lack of transparency in campaign platforms, more attack adds, puppy dogged ohma-
gosh pleas for fairness, a few more attack ads, Tea baggers, automated phone messages, Obama, Teabaggers vs. Obama and another round of punishment unfit for any sane and fit obedient citizen. However, there was one constant... One torch lit in that darkened Winter sky that steered the ship of discontent o’er the choppy sea of resentful and complacent Massachusetts voters, either far to unassuming in their comfort of position or far to enraged by their repression by the status quo and feeling unheard for so long. That beacon was Ayla Brown. She was “pulled” into the scene as a variable pawn...claimed as a potential victim of her father’s supposed views of legislation, a conversation I will surely not divulge into here. However, she was marked- and her position in the small picture, a pure example, was wrongly claimed- not only for it’s in effectiveness, but also for it’s overshadowing effect of position in terms of public perception. She had been everywherebeamed into countless millions of homes on a weekly basis to make all of us forget about the hardships of the world and to encourage us to drink more coca-cola (remember: coke is it!!!). Since her starlet moment she had become a token symbol of that wholesome local girl done good. I have personally seen her perform the National Anthem at more than one nationally televised Celtics game. She had garnished a higher public profile than her father. A man who was elected with out much herald in 2004 to State Senate (in a special election none the less) and re nominated in an unopposed run in the fall of 2006 (Waaaaaait… doesn’t AI end in the late spring?), and through the last legs of an unassuming election had become the veiled herald of her father’s campaign, Being a sounding board for “young women” and a (literal) shield for her father in prime time ads. Public perception…whatta bitch. (Not to mention she was the musical act at her father’s victory rally, being beamed again all over the world accompanied by a second rate blues band.) However, I digress… I shall get to point now… if anything the transgressions of tonight have stirred a new furor in me, and that furor is now named February, the most asinine month on the calendar. I was going to list a slew of horrid historical events that sullied the month to dispel any warm hearts to this blip on the calander but that tide subsided. Now I’m back to bulletin points and transgressions- so bare with me.
What’s wrong with this month? Nothing on the surfacebut our perceptions and expectations may cast a different light. Let’s look at the “National” hallmarks of this month: Groundhog’s Day: It is a marvel to me that there is such hype behind this totally backwards holiday. There is a cult of Punxsutawney Phil and his soothsaying. Nearly 4000 people show up to a rural part of Pennsylvania to stand in the cold and act in shock as a hapless groundhog is forced from a box to either see, or not see, his shadow. Imagine you’re an innocent woodland creature (hell- even a mildly domesticated creature held to a life of captivity) that is forced onto a large ass podium with flashing lights and roaring crowds. Would you as well not run back into your “burrow”? It has been a long time since I remember the forecast of an early spring cast from the shadow of that varmint, if any at all. Valentine’s Day: I could dedicate a whole article to the backwards ideals of this holiest of horny days, but I may very well save it for later. I could go on about the greeting card industry helping to spurn a day of worship of some oft forgot Saint into a whorish means of consumerism, but I won’t. I won’t talk about awkward grade school distributions of those rip-em-apart Valentine day cards to EVERYONE in your class so no one would feel unloved. You could imagine where I could go. (I’d also like to add that the number of relationships that are run ashore by misread expectations due to our Hallmark blight certainly doesn’t surprise me as the increased suicide rate around Christmas does not.) President’s Day: George Washington’s birthday has been turned into a day where one should not only remember the glories of our persistence and unfaltering hope, but also the sheer fact that President Howard “Pass that over if yer done” Taft needed a bath tub two times big to bath his stanky arse. I’m sure ol’ George would throw his wooden choppers at that tent herding genius. Black History Month: Why give the African American population the shortest month as a remembrance of their past tribulations. (Also, if African American’s are so against about the term “Black” why don’t they rally around a name change? Or is it a term of history?) This may be my saving grace for this month.
In ways, I have more respect for African American’s ingenuity and contribution than that of the common counterpart cracker. I’m a musician so it makes some sense [c’mon- Blues, Jazz, R&B, Rock, Gospel, Funk and Hip-Hop just to name a few]- also I’m a basketball fan and my team was pivotal in no uncertain means of progressing integration [i.e.: Bill Russell- the winningest winner in all of windom (look him up, 13 championships on ALL levels of competition in16 years, first African American coach of any professional sports team, and also the man who figured out how to block a shot and rubbed elbows with MLK and Malcolm X for the advancement of civil rights. Also, some racist yokel broke into his house and shat in his bed and he still showed up to work and kicked ass)] There’s a lot to remember in a short time for a cascade of people who wanted this to be a better world and suffered at no ends to make it so. May hat’s off to you. But this last point easily segues into my reconciliations for this horror of a month. Most notably the NBA All-Star game. How I’ve pined for a seat to this hallowed event since a child, a weekend of merriment in celebration of one of America’s most glorious creations. A Barnum level extravaganza, a shining example of: “Guess what! We can all have fun and put our differences aside”. Wouldn’t that be nice? That annual oasis aside, this February brings a re-telling of one of my personal favorite tales. Universal is releasing a remake of The Wolfman and I’m in fits of glee. (One must note that I am a perennial geek for the Old Grand Studio’s Movie Monsters and the idea of Benecio Del Toro donning the make up and paying homage to the late Lon Chaney. Jr. turns me into a kid in a candy store.) An “R” rating certainly helps. Go see it and prepare to jump… So February, you’re the shortest month; there’s less sun, bills come sooner and everyone is mildly miserable. In ways I can’t blame you for the Romans considering winter a “month less” event, making you shorter in turn to just get over you, but I blame you for the complications that accompany you. I’m sorry. February, I hate you more than a fat kid hates celery sticks and low-sodium rice cakes. There I’ve said it, and by Jove I mean it. Thankfully March is here sooner than I hoped for. [] 29
you decide! ....is PLA the way to be?
re:newal thinks pla can reduce the carbon footprint and give consumers the power to make a choice. Bottled water convenience doesn’t have to pollute the planet. Polylactic acid (PLA), a plastic substitute made from fermented plant starch (usually corn) is quickly becoming a popular alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. As more and more countries and states follow the lead of China, Ireland, South Africa, Uganda and San Francisco in banning plastic grocery bags responsible for so much socalled “white pollution” around the world, PLA is poised to play a big role as a viable, biodegradable replacement. PLA Helps to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Proponents also tout the use of PLA—which is technically “carbon neutral” in that it comes from renewable, carbon-absorbing plants—as yet another way to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases in a quickly warming world. PLA also will not emit toxic fumes when incinerated. PLA Biodegrades Slowly
Unless Subjected to Industrial Composting But critics say that PLA is far from a panacea for dealing with the world’s plastic waste problem. For one thing, although PLA does biodegrade, it does so very slowly. According to Elizabeth Royte, writing in Smithsonian, PLA may well break down into its constituent parts (carbon dioxide and water) within three months in a “controlled composting environment,” that is, an industrial composting facility heated to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and fed a steady diet of digestive microbes. But it will take far longer in a compost bin, or in a landfill packed so tightly that no light and little oxygen are available to assist in the process. Indeed, analysts estimate that a PLA bottle could take anywhere from 100 to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. Recyclers Can’t Mix PLA and
Other Plastics Another issue with PLA is that, because it is of different origin than regular plastic, it must be kept separate when recycled, lest it contaminate the recycling stream. Being plant-based, PLA needs to head to a composting facility, not a recycling facility, per se, when it has out served its usefulness. And that points to another problem: There are currently only 113 industrialgrade composting facilities across the United States. Most PLA Uses Genetically Modified Corn Another downside of PLA is that it is typically made from genetically modified corn, at least in the United States. The largest producer of PLA in the world is NatureWorks, a subsidiary of Cargill, which is the world’s largest provider of genetically modified corn seed. With increasing demand for corn to make ethanol fuel, let alone PLA, it’s no wonder
Orlando

that Cargill and others have been tampering with genes to produce higher yields. But the future costs of genetic modification to the environment and human health are still largely unknown and could be very high. Green-Minded Consumers May Prefer Alternatives to Plastics While PLA has promise as an alternative to conventional plastic once the means of disposal are worked out, consumers might be better served by simply switching to reusable containers—from cloth bags, baskets and backpacks for grocery shopping (most chains now sell canvas bags for less than a dollar apiece) to safe, reusable (non-plastic) bottles for beverages. Despite Problems, PLA Has Many Uses As for other types of PLA items—such as those plastic “clamshells” that hold cut fruit (and there is a whole host of industrial and medical products now made from PLA)—there is no reason to pass them by. But until the kinks are worked out on the disposal and reprocessing end, PLA may not be much better than the plain old plastic it’s designed to make obsolete. re:newel is available at Virgin Olive Market, City Fish, Etho’s and other local establishments. Feel strong about re:newel? Demand it at your local store.
I’m sure that it’s hard to imagine an ex-Orlandoian (is that even right?) to miss anything about “O-Town.” But here I am, a self-described seasoned New Yorker with almost four years of real city living under my belt and I find myself wishing I had a Publix Ultimate sub right now (with Boar’s Head meat, of course). While NYC is my favorite place on the planet ever in the history of places and planets, the following is a list of things I miss most about living in “The City Beautiful”:
6
Singing along to music in the car While I suppose I wouldn't look like the craziest person if I was walking down the street singing along to my iPod at the top of my lungs, but I miss doing it in the privacy of my own vehicle. I had been known to drive around the block a couple of times before I got home just to finish up a song that was playing on the radio (umm... it was NOT a Kelly Clarkson song, no way).
5
Cheap movie tickets Ya know how much it costs to see a movie in NYC? $12.50. Ridiculous? Yes. Necessary if you love movies? Yes. But I miss matinees and second-run movie theatres. Also, I really miss the Enzian! Good food and good art-house flicks are a perfect mix.
4
Emerging art scene Let me preface by saying that I know very little about art. With that being said, I like that unpretentious galleries such as Bold Hype are welcoming people like me with open arms. Walk into a gallery in Chelsea here in NYC and expect to be looked down upon instantly.
3
A Comic Shop/ Coliseum of Comics/ MegaCon When I lived in Orlando, you could
find me every Wednesday with my thenboyfriend (now husband—aww…), Brandon, at Coliseum of Comics. At the time, A Comic Shop really wasn’t in the picture yet but it’s since blown up. While there are some decent comic shops in NYC (Midtown Comics comes to mind), I can’t help but feel a little jealous whenever I read about some cool event A Comic Shop is doing. As for MegaCon, I’ve only been once in 2006 and I had the best time!
2
Walt Disney World Growing up, I went to Disney monthly at least. Now I’m lucky if I go once or twice a year. I seriously love it. Drinking around the world at Epcot? I’m there. Fireworks, parades, rides—I love it all. Now whenever I see a Disney commercial on TV my heart breaks a little. Universal’s great, don’t get me wrong, but I will always have a soft spot for that mouse.
1
P u bl i x / C h i c k - f i l - A / Mimi’s Café No, I’m not kidding. I really do miss these three things the most! There is no supermarket, including Whole Foods, t h a t compares to Publix in NYC. A s mentioned, the subs are amazing and I love the sweet tea, chicken fingers, southern style potato salad, and their bakery (yes, my wedding cake was a Publix wedding cake). I list Chick-fil-A mainly for its sweet tea as well, and Mimi’s Café is adorable and I love the ambiance and the food! 31

Dear Caroline: My boyfriend Nick and I have been together for about 5 months and I have never been in such a great relationship. We both love the same movies, authors, and both love dogs. When we are together we have so much fun—even if we are just hanging out at home doing nothing! We are even talking about planning a trip to South America together this summer. The problem is not with Nick, but with his ex-girlfriend, Camille. Camille is unbelievably beautiful—the kind of beautiful that make men stop in their tracks and just stare when they see her. Nick’s best friend told me that that Nick is “totally over her”---but I can’t seem to get over her! I am an attractive girl but certainly no goddess. Every time Nick and I kiss or have sex I wonder if he is thinking about Camille. I used to be happy with what I look like but now I feel so plain-Jane next to the glimmering image of Camille. Everyday I look at her pictures on Facebook and can’t help but compare myself to her. I am in constant fear that one day she will decide she wants Nick back and he will drop me like a rotten banana peel. What can I do to stop this madness? ***Ugly duckling
Dear Ugly Duckling: First I agree that you are not in an enviable position—it is normal to feel a little insecure about “the ex”, especially in the newer stages of the relationship. To have the ex be a raving beauty only adds fuel to the fire that will, if not dealt with, slowly roast you into a jealous maniac—not sexy. So STOP comparing yourself to this other person—right now! You are done obsessing about something you cannot change. And NO more Facebook stalking—looking at photos of her will only make you feel worse. Ok maybe this Camille would beat the pants off you in a bikini contest, but is she as interesting and fun to be with as you are? Nick is with you because he likes you. Some people get off on having a hot girlfriend/boyfriend that they can tote around like a trophy and use to make their friends jealous. But that kind of attraction tends to have a brief shelf life, and the best people will always choose the person they feel most comfortable and happy with over the arm candy. Ugly Duckling, it is time to embrace your inner swan and take flight with confidence about all the things that make you awesome--even if you have to fake it at first. Being cool and self-assured is far more alluring than physical beauty – and that kind of allure lasts forever, unlike perfect skin or a great ass. Take, for example, the story of Wallace Simpson, a skinny, horse-faced, and twice divorced American who in the 1930’s managed to cast such a powerful spell on then reigning Prince Edward that he gave up the English throne to be with her. Despite not being particularly good-looking, Ms. Simpson was described by her contemporaries as “charismatic” and “electric” and those qualities alone won her the heart of a king. So sure a pretty face can turn heads, but a fascinating personality can change history.

HORORSCOPE
FEBruary
ARIES 2010 (Mar. 21- Apr. 20) Four planets will pass through Aquarius this month, Aries, and your house of friendships. Your social schedule will be ridiculously busy, and when it comes to romance, you should ask a friend with a very level head on his or her shoulders to help manage your social schedule, to weed out the invitations that really worth your time. No matter who you spend Valentine’s Day with, don’t let petty issues turn into huge problems on the 13th. On a scale of 1 to 10, you won’t even remember it as a negative 50 in a few weeks.
LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Several planets in diligent Capricorn will put you to work with a vengeance during the first half of January, Leo, but not to worry. You may be late for dinner more than once, but assure your sweetheart that it will be well worth the effort in the long run. The Powers That Be are watching, and there may be a raise or bonus, or maybe even a well-deserved promotion en route. On the 17th, generous Jupiter, the heaven’s equivalent of Santa Claus, will enter your house of intimacy, wearing romantic Pisces. It just doesn’t get any better than this!
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re famous for being chatty, Sagittarius, and even more known for your complete honesty. But this month, you’d better warn any unsuspecting bystanders to step away if you get That Look on your face. Four planets in startling Aquarius will pass through your house of communications, and if you thought you were straight-talking and blunt before, well, you won’t believe what will tumble out of your mouth in February. Of course, Valentine’s Day is coming up, so try your best to be gentle with your sweetheart - even if you can only manage it for a few days!
TAURUS (Apr. 21- August 21) If the career path you’re on now doesn’t involve telecommunications, Taurus, it certainly should. Several planets in Aquarius are moving through your house of career matters, and each just loves tinkering with electronics and telecommunications. With Valentine’s Day en route, and your sign being ruled by Venus, the Goddess of Love, you can create a mixture of your natural talents - those bestowed upon you by Venus - and those currently gifted to you by those Aquarius planets. Together, you’ll come up with a wonderful way to celebrate the day, and perhaps also to forge a new profession.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) A tug of war will occur this month, Virgo, between your diligent Sun Sign and mighty Jupiter, who’ll spend the month in your opposite sign - romantic, dreamy Pisces, which just so happens to mean he’ll be on duty in your house of relationships. Jupiter doesn’t do anything halfway and he’s a big fan of socializing - so you’ll likely have a veritable buffet of admirers on hand, offering so many evenings out that you may have problems getting to work! If you have time off, take some of it now, especially with Valentine’s Day right around the corner!
CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) Pluto’s presence in your sign and house of personality has been affecting you for months - years, even, Capricorn - and it’s far from over. In fact, since this powerful God of the Underworld will meet up with Jupiter, the King of Mount Olympus, you’ll have two of the heaven’s most powerful allies on your side. They’ll meet up officially on February 6, but well before and after that, you’ll be able to chat anyone up, thanks to Jupiter in your house of communications, and Pluto’s ability to attract anyone. Careful - you may end up with too many admirers.
GEMINI (August 22-June 21) You’ve never been known to be shy, Gemini, or anything even remotely close, and with no less than four planets passing through your fellow Air Sign cousin, bold, unpredictable Aquarius, the ruler of your house of long-distance places and people, you won’t be afraid to speak to anyone at all. If they happen to sound as if they’re from another country, or at least another culture, so much the better. Your ears will perk right up - and your heart, too. And with Valentine’s Day just about here, well, it’s entirely possibly that you’ll fall in love at first sight!
LIBRA Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) Well, Libra, it’s going to be all about love for you this month, and whether you’re attached or single, you’ll have some planetary envoys prepared to make it a memorable Valentine’s Day. Saturn’s presence in your sign and your house of personality and appearance is terrific news for those of you who are happily attached and thinking of taking things a step further. If you’re single, that won’t last long. No less than four planets in startling, unpredictable Aquarius will work their way through your house of lovers. Prepare yourself for a lovely surprise on the 14th!
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Your Sun Sign always plays host to Valentine’s Day, Aquarius - which may seem odd, since the keywords most often used to describe you include “detached” and “indifferent.” Those keywords are also used to portray intellectual types - gifted people who can say anything in ten words or less - exactly what the language of love is all about. Since that’s also what you’re about, you’ll be at your best in February, especially on the 13th, when chatty Mercury in your own sign will contact passionate Mars, and on Valentine’s Day, when the Sun will meet up with dreamy Neptune.
CANCER (June 22-July 22) The stars of the show for you this month, Cancer, are pretty powerful players. To start, there’s mighty Jupiter, the King of the Gods, and intense, potent Pluto, who’s all done up in responsible Capricorn. Pluto is holding court in your house of one-to-one relationships, where he’ll stay for years, making every encounter you have turn extremely deep and passionate in a matter of minutes. Add in Jupiter, who’ll be holding court in your house of long-distance friends and lovers, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for traveling. Whether you’re single or attached, it’s going to be a terrific month!
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Lucky you, Scorpio! Your house of love affairs will play host to the heaven’s two most benevolent planets this month: Venus, the Goddess of Love, and Jupiter, the generous King of the Gods. It will be a wonderful February for you - most especially around Valentine’s Day, when those two will get together, astrologically holding hands, all done up in romantic Pisces, and working their magic to make every encounter special. Once the Sun joins the party on the 18th, you won’t have much time to yourself - but why would you want it? Indulge in your favorite pastime: passion!
PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) You must quite literally be on top of the world now, Pisces, and it’s only going to get better. Jupiter himself, the King of the Gods and the ruler of all things good, has begun his year-long trek through your sign, and along the way, he’ll meet up with another of the heaven’s most well-loved planets, loving Venus - who’ll also enter your sign on the 11th. These two will be absolutely inseparable from the 14th through the 19th, just like you and whoever you choose to spend Valentine’s Day with. The magic won’t end there, either!
