The Art Experience
I
nspiration is derived from all aspects of life, not only the beautiful but also the painful. Some of the worst of life, of human history has inspired some of the best books, sculptures, and paintings-the best art. It is to ensure remembrance and prevent repetition that artist create works inspired by events such as the Holocaust. Most of us have read a book by Elie Wiesel or have watched ‘Schindler’s List’ for a school course. We’ve written essays on why hate is bad and how it should never happen again. Then we graduate, get busy, forget, and shelve those lessons along with the other things which make us uncomfortable. We stop remembering and lose the art. Off Maitland Avenue in a rather remarkable building is Central Florida’s own Holocaust Memorial. Established in 1986, the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center, is home to a permanent exhibit which utilizes multimedia presentations as well as items recovered from camps, ghettos and survivors. The permanent exhibit teaches visitors of the multiple levels on which the Holocaust impacted the world. It features sculptures by local artist, Wolf Khan, which portray emaciated
figures, survivors. Perhaps the most amazing aspect of the Center is its stories from survivors who now call Central Florida home. The hallway leading from the permanent exhibit to a library is lined with remarkable stories of people who escaped death to start new lives. The Center also hosts featured or traveling exhibits throughout the year. Currently it is hosting an annual student art exhibit. Students from various grades and schools around the area have submitted pieces which reflect their interpretation of why it is important for us to remember. The pieces are remarkable and whether they are from an elementary or high school student, each shows careful consideration to the question at hand, “why remember?”
tant to remember because those are all symptoms of hate. We reside in an area that is rather diverse so it is very fitting that the Holocaust Memorial should be located in Central Florida. It is a wonderful reminder of our shared past and an inspiring resource for a beautiful future. Remembrance is the inspiration for this remarkable cultural center and it is sure to inspire you. — Kristen Blalock

Gaga if only in Haiku
After much waiting and an insane amount of hype, it’s finally here, Born This Way, the third studio album from Lady Gaga. The 1 million-plus first week of sales album hit stores last month and has been on repeat in many players since. “Mother Monster” takes on religion, love (lost), death, censorship, teenage angst, and everything in between. It’s hard to review an album where all 17 of the songs are grade-A hits, so in order to limit myself to 17 syllables, here are some of the album’s best – in Haiku form.

WITHOUT Director: Mark Jackson Writer/director Mark Jackson has made Without, which starts out as a type of cross between Bergman and Cassavetes, which is a great idea, but this film would have had more impact if the story line had been tighter. Star Brooke Bundy is very good as a young woman slowly going stir crazy in the isolated woods, tho I never bought that her character would ever have gone out with a local redneck, that rang false and I felt those scenes were mainly there to stretch things out to feature length. This would have made a great one-hour film, but of course there is no market for that. Still, if you like indies, this is definitely worth a rental. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1791687/ — Kris Gilpin
Everything must go Director: Dan Rush Will Ferrell shows again that he can be a good dramatic actor (as he did in Stranger Than Fiction, which actually would have had a tremendous impact if the script didn’t chicken out and not have his character die at the end) with Everything Must Go, in which he’s a sweet loser who loses his job & whose wife kicks him out along with all his possessions - so he ends up living on his front lawn and eventually holds a big lawn sale. Young C.J. Wallace (The late Notorious B.I.G.’s son) works well with Ferrell here as a kid who helps him sell it all and the last touching scene between Will and his pregnant neighbor Rebecca Hall almost choked me up. Check this one out... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1531663/ — Kris Gilpin

Getting into the mind of someone other than yourself
“I realize that for people like us, who are looking to impact our world, the best thing Downtown Credo hands out is hope.”
As I get out of my car at 8:30 AM in front of the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center on Parramore Avenue, I’m grateful for the sunny day, but wish I’d grabbed some coffee. Actually, I’m here because of coffee. More specifically, I’m here to better my community because of Downtown Credo coffee. BRINK first spread the word about Downtown Credo Coffeehouse in College Park via Facebook, buzzing about its warm, eclectic atmosphere. Each time I stopped by, dedicated baristas Stefan and Wendy handed me an expertly blended brew with a smile. I feel a similarity as Janice Rahill, the City of Orlando’s Green Up manager, hands me and other volunteers – including Wendy and Downtown Credo founder, Ben Hoyer – gardening gloves an metal shovels. how the stately brick building was the original Jones High School, and now functions as the enriching heart of the Parramore neighborhood. From roughly 9am to noon, we plant, shovel mulch, pull weeds, prune shrubs, get a work out, get dirty, make new friends and a visible difference. While planting a few shrubs, Mayor Buddy Dyer praises the engagement of younger volunteers with the city’s revitalization efforts. He suggests exploring cityoforlando.net for volunteer opportunities on city boards: arts, museums, social services, and parks and recreation, among others. But his main excitement centers on the website’s front page “Orlando Cares” link, a portal connecting volunteers with programs funded by the exclusive “Cities of Service” grant established by the Rockefeller Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies
that only 20 cities – Orlando the only city in Florida – have obtained. Around noon our group moves inside for a smoked barbecue lunch provided by a local Parramore restaurant. People from all ages, areas, groups and backgrounds bond around one table. On the way back to my car I’m overwhelmed by the beauty we’ve left behind. I never realized an incurable coffee habit would become a conduit for community transformation. I hope to make a habit of BRINK joining Downtown Credo’s various volunteer projects and events. I know a healthy mob of BRINKers could make a big difference wherever we’re needed. Which, if Downtown Credo has anything to say about it, is everywhere. __________________________ www.downtowncredo.com www.cityoforlando.net www.orlandocares.net www.citiesofservice.org

Feedvibe exclusive review Mortal Kombat Mortal Kombat has been a staple in the childhoods of many gamers in the world, but previous entries in the series have left a sour taste in gamers’ mouths due to how poor they’ve been. Mortal Kombat (the 9th release from the series) seeks to right those wrongs in a tremendous way. Netherrealm studios succeeded where Midway failed in the last few installments of Mortal Kombat. The combat is refined amazingly with some classic Mortal Kombat gameplay from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, mixed with new elements that you’d find in other fighting game series like Tekken and Street Fighter. The roster contains 27 of the most
popular characters (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Lui Kang) and some of the most underrated and obscure characters (Stryker, Sheeva, Jade). Each character has a set of moves, specials, X-Ray attacks and fatalities that differ from each other. The Challenge Tower, Story Mode, and Ladder modes are more than enough to make up for the lackluster and lag-ridden XBOX Live online modes. The Challenge Tower is a fun, challenging set of fights and classic mini-games that will easily keep you playing for hours. Visually, the game is pretty tremendous. Character models might seem a bit outdated, but the level design is superb on every stage. It also wouldn’t be an MK game without blood, gore and fatalities. The fatalities are the most hilarious and brutal than they’ve ever been before, which alone may be the main reason to even buy this gem that is Mortal Kombat. 4 Stars out of 5 — Andrew Parsley
imagine. Tyler, the Creator Goblin
In Tyler, the Creator’s follow-up to 2009’s freely released album Bastard, Goblin presents Tyler, the Creator as much more than just a potty-mouthed teenager with lyrics of angst and visions of rape – he’s a dark, cruel, and talented musician whose image reflects his rebellious generation today. While most of Tyler’s vulgar lyrics can be passed off by the average Bill O’Reilly fan as immature and sadistic, the actual content of Goblin is brilliant. The majority of songs on Goblin spark rebellion and youth’s distaste for authority, while other stand out tracks tell vivid tales from a kid who’s obviously a product of 90’s Eminem and punk rock. Production on the album is rich, full of bass and experimental sounds that make Goblin, at times, seem like electronic-mosh music. Guest appearances on the album are from other OFWGKTA group members, meaning there is virtually no other outside forces on the album other than the vulgar, anthem shouting crew that seem to be fully powering all of hip-hop as of late. Goblin is definitely Odd Future’s first mainstream masterpiece, and a landmark in a new age of hip-hop.

Beastie Boys Hot Sauce Committee Part Two
Originally scheduled to release in 2009 (as Hot Sauce Committee Part One) but delayed due to member MCA’s battle with cancer, the trio’s eighth studio album, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, keeps the Beastie sound alive and kicking harder than you could
Straying a bit away from their approach on 2004’s To the Five Boroughs, but bleeding with old-school hip-hop roots, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two is the perfect blend between the trio’s past and present. The Beastie Boys deliver their signature pop culture reference raps with added boomin’ grandpa flavor, featuring guest spots by Santigold and rapper veteran Nas on a reworked version of the 2009 single, “Too Many Rappers.” The finest aspect of the album is the fact that the Beasties are being just who they’ve always been – the Beastie Boys. They aim to impress absolutely no one, remain in their own comfort zone, and continue to deliver their signature sound comparable to no other. Full of plinking keyboards, funky bass lines, fuzz, jazz, and most of all, loudness, this album will definitely please any Beastie Boys fan -old or new. 4 out of 5 Stars — Kevin Cortez

Samantha handler’s custom cosplay Interview By Kevin Cortez
SH: That is a great question! I feel like when I choose a cosplay it’s more than just a pretty outfit. I have to feel a connection to the Character as well as feel comfortable walking around in their clothes! What seems to be a trend in the characters I choose [besides the reoccurring pigtails] is that they are all strong characters in their own way. They all symbolize innocence as well as strength and I believe that is how I portray myself. KC: Your recent work is a full-blown and very detailed Babydoll from the movie Super Punch. Sucker Punch opened up with some very poor reviews. What were your thoughts on the movie?
Babydoll/Suckerpunch
Megacon 2011, Orlando’s biggest anime and geek convention, recently just passed last March. This year had some remarkable and stunning costumes by fans in attendance, but there was one outfit that really caught my eye. Orlando local Samantha Handler and her “Babydoll” cosplay, from Zack Snyder’s recent film Sucker Punch, were truly awesome in every aspect, and incredibly detailed. I got to talk with Samantha, or perhaps better known as her Cosplay.com alias Cupcake Disko, and ask her a few questions about the process of making a costume and attending conventions. KC: Typically, how long does it take to create a costume? SH: Really, it just depends on how elaborate the outfit is. With Vanille (Final Fantasy XIII), her beading alone took 10 hours to complete. But with Babydoll, I was able to steadily finish the entire outfit within 2 weeks. Typically, I’ll look at the costume and make “mini goals” to complete them. Breaking up the outfit creates a “puzzle” effect and it is easier to finish when you’re going at one goal at a time. KC: How do you pick the characters you wish to portray?
SH: You know, I’ve heard a lot of negative reviews on Sucker Punch, saying it lacked story/plot, character development, acting, etc, but honestly, I thought the film was beautiful. It was a sequence of “music video” type dream scenes where there were missions and great combat. I thought that overall, it was more of an artistic film than anything. It attempted to step out of the box and I believe it should be appreciated for its unique way of story telling. KC: Is there a character you’d love to cosplay as but feel like you can’t or aren’t able to?
what I was in for! I would love to travel more and attend Otakon [Baltimore, MD], which I’ve heard so much about, as well as Comic-Con [San Francisco, CA]. KC: Have you ever modeled for anyone in your cosplays? SH: Yes! Besides attending conventions and stopping for photos, I’ve also set up a few photoshoots in Orlando, FL with Jason Collier [photographer for Sea World] as well as one in Georgia with Sully Shah. My favorite experience so far though is being featured in two of Ackson Lee’s Videos. Video shoots are like a different world! Being able to “act” as the character instead of just “posing” takes Cosplay to the next level. His videos also give a much better feel on how the outfits flow and you’re able to see details you’d easily miss in just a photo. http://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=nad5a0GnJK 4&feature=playe r_embedded KC: Have you ever been recognized outside of conventions and in casual clothes?
SH: Oh goodness, yes! I find myself always on the look out for new cosplays. I think it’s important to find a character that you not only admire & relate to, but also resemble. Right now, I’d love to cosplay Yoko Ritona from Gurren Lagann but I lack a certain... distinct body trait that I don’t believe I’d be able to pull off her over all look.
SH: Haha, not yet! Its funny, people at conventions don’t even realize it’s me when I change from character to character, but that is what makes this so much fun! Being able to portray a character and step away from reality for a bit.
KC: What conventions have you attended? What was your first? Any you’d love to attend?
KC: Are there any other creative hobbies other than cosplaying that you enjoy?
“I think it’s important to find a character that you not only admire & relate to, but also resemble.”
SH: I have attended MegaCon [Orlando,FL] MetroCon [Tampa, FL] AFO [Orlando,FL] Dragon*Con [Atlanta, GA] MegaCon 2010 was my first convention. It was overwhelming! I had no idea
SH: There are tons and tons of hobbies I enjoy. I grew up in a creative household that encouraged us to use our hands and create. I have a degree in Interior Design. I enjoy drawing and using watercolors. Sewing is really just a new hobby I’ve only recently started. I also have a small online shop that I run from my home where I make nerdy clay jewelry. _________________________________

“UK Style’s Royal Road to Fashion” would you choose and why? SF: Our men’s line was inspired by street and runway fashions in international capitals that will have any of our male customers looking fashionable on a budget. I would pick a dark-washed jean ($24.90) and pair it with button-down Oxford shirt ($24.90) and V-neck tee ($12.90) for any guy to wear. This look can be worn during the day and even during a night out with his buddies. caroline knows
down wallboard which was such a dusty ordeal that Jenna suffered a severe allergy attack. Jenna spent almost a year of grueling work helping Doug create the perfect dream home for when they got married. And you know what happened after that? Once the house was finished Doug broke up with Jenna and within a year had met and married another girl—a girl who got to move right into that beautifully restored bungalow that Jenna had poured hours of back-breaking (and heart-breaking) work into.
sit back, relax and let caroline take it from here
Dear Caroline: My girlfriend and I live together in a house that she owns. I pay half of the mortgage as rent each month which is comparable to what I paid for my previous apartment. Since I’m pretty handy with tools, and the house needs a lot of work, I spend a lot of free time helping with renovations. My girlfriend thinks I should also pay for half of any materials that go into the house since someday it will be ‘ours’, but I’m hesitant. Although I hope we will eventually marry there is no guarantee that will actually happen. I’m already spending most weekends working on the house and I think that—in addition to my rent—is enough. Am I being a selfish jerk by not wanting to pony up for materials when I legally have no claim on this house? --Not-Yet-House-Husband
{
Dear Not-Yet-House-Husband: True story: My friend (I’ll call her Jenna) was in a similar situation to yours. Jenna paid rent in her boyfriend Doug’s 1930’s house that was in
desperate need of renovating. Jenna dutifully spent hours and hours chipping up old tile, scraping peeling paint, and dragging heavy planks of wood up the stairs. I recall an entire week dedicated just to sanding
Jenna didn’t spend a lot of money on building materials but she did invest a huge amount of time, emotion and physical labor on the house that she assumed someday would be hers. My advice to you is this: if you enjoy spending your free time working on your girlfriend’s house then keep hammering away! But until you two are married—or you have some kind of legal claim to the equity you are helping put in the house--your money belongs in the bank and not at Home Depot.

You’re Orlando with peter
It’s summer time in Orlando, and as the motivated sweat drips down onto your iPad you should remember that your parents just deposited more money into your checking account (score)!! So what are you going to do with that money? Plan a vacation? Invest in a food truck? Wish for more wishes? As the creative minds over at ‘Mills 50’ displayed back in May, any group of ragtag music lovers, bar patrons, and desirable roadies can band together and create an event (Mills Stock). With that on the mind, a smile on the face, and the fried food truck cuisine blocking blood flow to the heart- lets all collectively assess the

potential of launching another great Orlando festival! ‘Snap!’ The international photography festival just happened, and they have the market cornered on sexy photographers, Russian women, and camera lenses (all in one: see Elena Viserzkaya) -scratch that. ‘FMF’ the Florida Music Festival has music, and it’s in Florida… so there’s that. The Florida Film Festival has come a long way in the past decade to earn the attention of the best filmmakers, social media aficionados, ‘cinafiles,’ and culinary connoisseur’s. So in all
respect to the sexy Mr. Henry Maldonado and the sagacious Ms. Jordana Meade, lets leave the films to them. The 21 Convention is here to help out struggling men find themselves, and lets not even think about throwing another Improv festival and/or food truck event in the 407 area code without a Lawyer present ;-) Does Orlando have room for a finger painting festival?! - Peter Murphy of Wooden Steel Productions & Orlando LIVE www.PeterMurphy.tv/
