Every Issue
This issue’s concept transformed three times throughout the process. First, dubbed the “Creative Culture issue,” we decided that it was too similar to the previous issues theme and that every issue has a particular caliber of “creative culture.” The second theme that started to peek through was “spring fashion issue,” but once again, we struggled with the fact that we try to have equal amounts of fashion and entertainment, so we didn’t want to alienate any readers. Finally, after many, many flips through the issue, there was one concept and theme running through nearly every page — COLOR! Thus, “the color issue” debuts! Nearly every page is heightened by bright hues and a vibrant color pattern. From the exclusive Yoanna House fashion editorial to Style Ringer featuring Drew Seeley. Smack dab in the middle of this issue is not so much visual color, but colorful characters from the Cinemax original series, The Girls Guide to Depravity.

New Orleans shop, haus 131, beats the odds and takes selling fashion to a whole new level Words by Sarah Nicole Francois Photography by Janine Joffe
For the fashionista looking to stretch her wallet to save a few bucks, look no further than Haus 131. The chic New Orleans boutique filled with stylish pieces and affordable prices is a frugal fashionista’s heaven on Earth. Founded by a restless retail worker with a vision, Katie Rae Bowen started off small by throwing local trunk shows she called “Haus Parties.” As Katie’s clientele and reputation grew, so did her inventory, and the seeds of her current storefront were planted. The name is inspired by the January 31st birthday she shares with her mentor — and father. Katie’s vision is to create a store that offers chic, trendy clothes that would appeal to all girls, within any budget, all across the nation. Katie offers some advice for those looking to turn their love for fashion into their life’s work, “If owning a store is something you want to do one day, then do it. Get as much experience as you can. Do as much research as you can. Create a vision for your store, so, when you open, it will be exactly what you imagined it would be.” haus131.com

through the whole thing. Then hopefully I’ll get a few compliments from friends an hour later when I’m eating a plate of chicken wings at the restaurant next door.’ That’s not what they teach in drama school, folks! What are the elements for having a successful writing team? It helps if you say ‘lets just constantly generate a ton of material and not get picky until we have to.’ My group has avoided arguments because we have to crank out a new half hour for our UCB show every month. There’s no time to say, ‘hey wait, I don’t like that idea because it’s not the best idea, and my idea is a better idea than that guy’s idea.’ We just go with everything because we’ll always need more soon. And in the end, we let the audience decide what’s working. Whatever doesn’t get laughs is cut. What or who influenced a lot of your early writing? Conan, then Mr. Show, then Neil Campbell and Paul Rust. What do you find (consciously and subconsciously) influencing your writing? Consciously? Still Neil and Paul. Everyone from A Kiss From Daddy, and all the other Birthday Boys. Recently? Scott Aukerman and Leo Allen – and, really, Bob Odenkirk more than ever. I’ve been doing a lot of writing with him, and it’s like, ‘hachi machi!’ As for subconscious influences? Maybe the weird ones are things like Bruce Springsteen and Forrest Gump. Probably not the coolest reference, but that movie got stuck in my head when I was a kid.
Words With Friends like it or not, here’s what peter murphy has to say about ______. With Peter Murphy Photography by Chris VanArtsdalen Chances are, if you’re not a part of the comedy sketchwriting scene in Los Angeles, you haven’t heard the name Tim Kalpakis, but you’ve probably heard his words. Kalpakis has written for both Aziz Ansari and Andy Samburg at the 2009 and 2010 MTV Movie Awards and is a big part of the writing team (The Birthday Boys) responsible for the latest IFC project, Portlandia, the indie comedy talk show Comedy Bang! Bang! hosted by Scott Aukerman. CB!B! will be hitting television screens Friday nights this summer. Fans of the Comedy Bang! Bang! pod cast will also be happy to know that the television version will stay true to form. Kalpakis has a reputation around The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre as a very talented and humble seasoned performer, writer, and all around nice guy; the type of guy that probably wouldn’t mind if you beat him in a game of “Words with Friends” (if he played). Writers, get your pencils ready to take notes as Tim Kalpakis shares a few Words With Friends. Are you more comfortable on stage or in a writers’ room? Writers’ room. Performing is easily the most fun thing I ever get to do, but it’s not like I actually have any idea what I’m doing up there. My approach is like ‘I’m going to focus entirely on the script and then wait two weeks, yell the lines in front of an audience, and try not to smile
14 • BRINK • www.brinkmagonline.com
Is there a topic you wouldn’t parody? Why? I’ll probably never parody low budget TV commercials for household products. Not because of ethical reasons; I just can’t find an angle. Other than that, I do try to avoid direct parodies of flavor-of-the-month things. I didn’t start watching Mr. Show until it was off the air, yet it still felt fresh because they mainly wrote evergreen sketches and greater genre parodies. I hope Birthday Boy bits can have some sort of shelf life. Where did the name “The Birthday Boys” come from? We were trying to glorify something universal that nobody can brag about. Everybody has a birthday. And we included ‘Boys’ because we realized that every guy in the group is male. Names are funny because they seem important at first, but then lose all meaning once you’ve said them twice. Is there a particular sketch, or series of sketches, you are proud of more than others? Why? My favorites are the sentimental idiot ones. Pooljumpers, Ham Hat, Legendary Animator, or Horny Beach: Marine Life. The ones where we played a good song and did jokes until it ended. Do you make your parents laugh? Do I ever. I’m a big hit with Donna and David Kalpakis. One time, The Birthday Boys did a show in Montreal and pretty much only our parents showed up. We killed! What’s one survival tip you could give to comics/writers perusing a career in comedy (other than persistence)? Become part of a community. UCB, Funny Or Die, the Harvard Lampoon, the city of Chicago. Find some like-minded people and collaborate with them. But, I also feel like I have to say that if you really are simply ‘perusing’ a career in comedy, my main advice would be don’t do it, ya weirdo. If the prospect of getting a real job is at all appealing to you, that’s what you should be ‘perusing.’ What a great perusal it will be! It took me five years before I could make any sort of modest living in comedy. And who knows what’ll happen to me next year? I’ll probably die. [Ed. Note: The typo in the last question (perusing instead of pursuing) was left for comic relief. We are only human after all.]

60 years Come and gone so fast How FM Station, WPRK, Became the Little Station That Could
Words by Kesi P. Photography by Max Schwartz
Orlando; the City Beautiful. Known to many as the home of Disney World and more recently, the 2012 All-Star Weekend, Orlando has been making major marks on the world and turning into a transient city for the masses. These are things that make Orlando nationally known, but it’s really the local treasures that really make this city as great as it is. In fact, one of those many treasures is the oldest FM broadcasting station in Central Florida, WPRK 91.5 FM. Taking time on a rainy weeknight to sit down and let the world know about this historic station that started it all for Central Florida, Rob Soviero let’s BRINK know exactly why this station has been hidden from some of us and lets us in on a few secrets from the past 60 years of broadcasting excellence. 16 • BRINK • www.brinkmagonline.com
For the people who are not familiar with who you guys are, where you come from and exactly what you do, give them a little backdrop of the trials and tribulations that WPRK has encountered throughout your time here. WPRK 91.5 FM is the oldest FM broadcasting station in Central Florida. Some like to argue that it is the oldest in Florida, period, because it probably is (you just have to find the documents). A lot of people were experimenting with FM back in that time. We are the only independent, non-commercial radio station in Central Florida to this day that is still broadcasting music that you wouldn’t hear on a corporate radio station. So, that’s kind of our mission statement here. [We] not only play music that is not heard on any other radio station, but it is to also expose our community to new music that [listeners] would never hear on a normal radio station or corporate
station. We consider ourselves a ‘real normal radio station’ because we’re broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, variety format radio, which can go anywhere from rock to funk to rap to reggae to metal to blues to world music, [and] different styles of talk radio – which is all community talk radio. We’ve got a wide variety here. We’re in our 60th year of broadcasting, and we’ve had a lot of changes over the years, but the most important part is we are still going – unlike a lot of radio stations that crumble and sell. When there’s money behind it, there’s a different heart in it. Since we’ve been more about the volunteers, community and students, we’ve stood the test of time. facebook.com/wprk915 To read the full interview, go to brinkmagonline.com

by Brad Goreski If you’re like me, you can’t look at a bow tie and black framed glasses and not think of Brad Goreski. Brad, most notably from Bravo’s The Rachel Zoe Project and spinoff It’s a Brad Brad World, has added author to his repertoire, and I must say it is a natural progression. Part style guide, part memoir, Brad’s story of success is equally inspirational.
Adam lambert Trespassing TBD After a successful debut and tour that had him appealing to the masses and showing his strengths, the rocker is back with more pop/rock music that takes its aim at a bigger audience. Download: Better Than I Know Myself, Chokehold — Kevin Cortez
Most Talkative: Stories from the Front Lines of Pop Culture by Andy Cohen
To keep the Bravo theme going, we have the “Watch What Happens Live” host and Bravo executive’s long-awaited memoir. I love Andy, and even though I am not a homosexual male who was raised in the suburbs of St. Louis, I completely related to his love of television and pop culture. In the same vein as his wacky no-holdsbarred talk show, Most Talkative is unpredictable and hilarious.

film Rolling Thunder A stoic Major Charles Rane (William Devane) is an ex-tortured POW major returning from war in Rolling Thunder (1977). After the hometown’s warm-welcome, his house is robbed, his family killed, and his arm badly injured all for a briefcase of silver dollars. He eventually tracks down the thugs in Mexico, picks up his army buddy Johnny Vohden (a young Tommy Lee Jones) along the way, and, as Jones tells it, “(We’re) gonna kill a bunch of people.” This movie was filmed back when bad guys were truly scary and evil, like Luke Askew and James Best, and when audiences would scream and applaud their approval of some of the most violent and blood-soaked scenes in movie history — Tarantino even named his DVD video label after this film — and somehow, they just don’t make ‘em like they used to. So if you like your movie revenge rough and explosive, check this one out! — Kris Gilpin
Martha Marcy May Marlene Martha Marcy May Marlene’s title signifies the fractured mindset of a damaged young woman named Martha — the very talented, and youngest Olsen, Elizabeth — who escapes a cult run by a typically charismatic leader Patrick — the always superb John Hawkes. Martha — known as Marcy May in the cult — flees to her sister’s home three hours away. But it’s made clear that her paranoia has blurred the lines between the haunting dreams and her uncertain reality when Martha’s sister asks, “What happened to you in there?!” If you’re up for an intriguing psychological thriller made on a (compared to Hollywaste) low budget with a subtle story that Hollytrite would never even bother making anymore, then this indie is for you. — Kris Gilpin

caroline knows Sit back, relax and let Caroline take it from here Dear Caroline, I recently met a really cute, nice guy through mutual friends who has been asking me out. Normally I’d snap him up without any hesitation, but there is one detail I am uncomfortable about. He has a 4 year old son who lives in town with the mother so he gets the kid every other week. I like kids but I have never dated anyone who has one…what do you think? — Child-fearing Dear Child-fearing: The issue here really isn’t the kid. I have a very simple rule about dating men who have children: what is his relationship like with the mother? If it is hostile then watch out—bickering parents can often create loads of stress and chaos that can drag on for many, many years. If the relationship is amicable and they have respectful, decent communication regarding the son—something which takes a tremendous amount of maturity-- then I say give the guy a chance!
I really love the bright, crazy nail polish colors that are in the stores now--aqua blue, pistachio green, neon yellow—but I’m worried that they will look weird on anyone over the age of 20 (I’m 28). What do you think? — Color Me Crazy…or not? Dear Color Me Crazy: I have a good decade on you age-wise but I too am irresistibly drawn to the wild array of colors in the nail polish isle at my local Ulta store. Here’s the rule: wear any color you want—and I mean any—but your manicure/pedicure must be impeccable. No chips, no ragged cuticles, no bits of polish on the outside of the nail. Change the polish whenever it looks less than perfect...if you don’t have time then take it all off and go clear. Well-groomed nails are always important but especially when wearing a ‘wacky’ color…anything other than perfection will just make you look kind of “forgot her meds” crazy! From the Vault: Dear Caroline: My boyfriend Nick and I have been together for about 5 months and I have never been in such a great relationship. We both love the same movies, authors, and both love dogs. When we are together we have so much fun—even if we are just hanging out at home doing nothing! We are even talking about planning a trip to South America together this summer. The problem is not with Nick, but with his ex-girlfriend, Camille. Camille is unbelievably beautiful—the kind of beautiful that make men stop in their tracks and just stare when they see her. Nick’s best friend told me that that Nick is “totally over her”---but I can’t seem to get over her! I am an attractive girl but certainly no goddess. Every time Nick and I kiss or have sex I wonder if he is thinking about Camille. I used to be happy with what I look like but now I feel so plain-Jane next to the glimmering image of Camille. Everyday I look at her pictures on Facebook and can’t help but compare myself to her. I am in constant fear that one day she will decide she wants Nick back and he will drop me like a rotten banana peel. What can I do to stop this madness? — Ugly duckling
Dear Caroline,
Dear Ugly Duckling: First I agree that you are not in an enviable position—it is normal to feel a little insecure about “the ex”, especially in the newer stages of the relationship. To have the ex be a raving beauty only adds fuel to the fire that will, if not dealt with, slowly roast you into a jealous maniac—not sexy. So STOP comparing yourself to this other person—right now! You are done obsessing about something you cannot change. And NO more Facebook stalking—looking at photos of her will only make you feel worse. Ok maybe this Camille would beat the pants off you in a bikini contest, but is she as interesting and fun to be with as you are? Nick is with you because he likes you. Some people get off on having a hot girlfriend/boyfriend that they can tote around like a trophy and use to make their friends jealous. But that kind of attraction tends to have a brief shelf life, and the best people will always choose the person they feel most comfortable and happy with over the arm candy. Ugly Duckling, it is time to embrace your inner swan and take flight with confidence about all the things that make you awesome--even if you have to fake it at first. Being cool and self-assured is far more alluring than physical beauty – and that kind of allure lasts forever, unlike perfect skin or a great ass. Take, for example, the story of Wallace Simpson, a skinny, horse-faced, and twice divorced American who in the 1930’s managed to cast such a powerful spell on then reigning Prince Edward that he gave up the English throne to be with her. Despite not being particularly good-looking, Ms. Simpson was described by her contemporaries as “charismatic” and “electric” and those qualities alone won her the heart of a king. So sure a pretty face can turn heads, but a fascinating personality can change history.

“If our artists are doing well, then we’re doing well.” Words by Kesi P. Photography by Miriphoto The City of Orlando isn’t just known as “The City Beautiful,” it is “The City of Beautiful Things.” Besides the coffee shops, great nightly views, and shopping spots that have exactly what you’re looking for, Orlando — specifically downtown Orlando — seems to have it all. The purpose of Legion 11 is to not only display the visually appealing apparel that they have, but to also display the art of the talented individuals that grace their site. Creating an escape route for local and national artists who may never get the chance to be exposed, this company always has the best interest of anyone who’s willing to come along “If you help enough people, you’ll for the ride. As
are looking for someone super different from me - I do not party that much.’ Someone from the production Facebookfriended me. I was like ‘I can’t accept their friendship; I have no pictures of me with red beer cups in my hand all over my Facebook. They’ll see that I am not like this.’ Anyway, I think they were looking for someone who was a little bit out of place in that world, and, so, it works really well. Have you met or spoken to the author, Heather Rutman? Sally: Yeah. We speak to her all of the time. We have become close to her. Rebecca: She’s awesome. She’s great.
we speak on the phone on a particularly chilly, fall, October afternoon, one can’t help but notice that the person on the other end of the line is strong, outspoken and oozing charisma. After chatting for some time, it becomes clear that the conversation is nearing an end. We bid adieu and reconnect months later through third-party emails. February comes along, and we piece together the parts from the past five months. This could be the tale of an epic love story or the way one handles business in a new age. In this case, it’s the latter, and our subjects, Sally Golan and Rebecca Blumhagen, are the protagonists of this tale. The rules have changed, and now our heroines are sharing “the guide” on and off the screen.
Sally: Yeah. She feels like a mentor in a way, because we’ve always confided in her with [questions] like ‘what do these rules mean?’ ‘what is your take on it?” She gives us a very mature, female opinion.
How familiar were you with Girl’s Guide before the show came along? Sally Golan: I wasn’t familiar with it at all. Actually, I didn’t know what to expect; it was just that the title was just so attractive. When we heard about the casting, I was just like ‘ooh this sounds so up my ally.’
Sally: Yeah, because when I get auditions as a female actress, it’s usually the girlfriend of, the wife of, the daughter of; it’s never really the star. And when you are a female star, you’re still that petite [character]; there isn’t a lot of power. So, it’s a chance to really be raw, and I’m a pretty raw person in general, but some of the stuff in this show is making me blush, but to be honest with you, by the time I was done shooting it, I felt more open, more comfortable with myself and with my sexuality and my intelligence and sophistication combined.
Rebecca Blumhagen: Yeah. No, I had never heard of the blog or anything before. How did you get involved with the project? Sally: So, my funny story is that I throw events in the city, and, so, I had worked with this director on a show that I recently wrote. So, he [Alex Merkin] called me while I was in Miami to come and audition for him. He also needed a casting director because he did not have a New Yorkbased casting director, so I was like ‘well I know one you can use - Adrian Stern.’ So, I put the two in touch, and he was like ‘oh, by the way, come audition for the show.’ So I went in, and I auditioned for them, and it sort of snowballed from there. Truthfully, it was even harder to get the part because I knew the casting and the director, so I had to fight a little bit harder to prove that I am not just friends with these people that I can actually do this. Rebecca: I got the audition, and I thought, ‘I am sure they

Some of the dialogue seems to be quite racy. How do you feel the audience will respond? Rebecca: I think women are ready for something super edgy. Like women are ready to be able to fight in the big leagues, to use the language that men use, to have edgy sex scenes, you know? The sex scenes all have a point. So it’s all telling a story, and it is about us figuring out our dating life, and it speaks very honestly, I feel like. That‘s what always attracted me about it. This project, to me, was a chance to really look at and grapple with issues that women really do face in the modern dating world in a way that’s more honest than a lot of TV shows.
So do you think that by playing this character, you were able to bring out a side of yourself as well? Sally: Totally. I think I am a better businesswoman, because I feel like I can use a certain energy that I haven’t been able to use before – like confidence. The show has brought me a lot of confidence, and I think people will react to it positively. I think we’ll get some scrutiny as well, but ‘bring it,’ because that‘s the whole point of entertainment. Why paint pretty roses, you know? We want to have some thorns. Rebecca: I feel that too. Now I feel like I’m at home in any world. I feel like I can walk into any room and feel comfortable, not because I feel more powerful, but because I feel like I sort of lived there for a little while.

Sally: We were living in Romania. We were out there. How do you see your character developing on the show? Sally: I think she grows. I think her heart gets bigger. At first she’s very guarded and incredibly stoic – very by the rules; literally by the rules – and then eventually she sort of takes Sam’s place and becomes a little bit softer, a little bit more open to the idea of falling in love in the show. This show, in the end, is about falling love, even though it may not seem like it. So can love concur all? Yeah, it kind of can.

Rebecca: I think Sam gets closer to trusting herself at the end of the series. In a way, she’s trying to sort of live up to [Lizzy]. She and Lizzie are best friends, and she is always taking her advice, and it’s fun, but at the same time, my character [Sam], most of the time, fails at everything that Lizzie try’s to do, so it’s constantly frustrating, and I think [in regards to] the guy that I really am attracted to – towards the end of the series – I start to trust myself [with] and dare to sort of break the rules and go outside of what we normally stuck to. Are their any similarities between you and the character you portray on the show? Rebecca: I think as an actor you have to find those [similarities] or else you’re not a good actor. I mean you have to find the part of you that says ‘how would I react if I were in these circumstances?’ Sally: For me, I found it to be her persona, her energy, and her take-charge attitude – 100%. If you see me with an event or running a production, oh, for sure, we’re so alike, and sometimes with men too I can be like that. With my friends I can be very ‘we are going to do this and we are going to go here.’ But I think what I’ve learned from Lizzie is that there is a way to take charge and be nurturing at the same time. And I think that’s what I found to be very interesting about her and how she can grow over the season, and that’s how I can do that too. Rebecca: I think, too, that the friendship that Sam’s character has with Lizzie is a kind of closeness and an honest friendship that was really fun to discover too, and that was something that really grew out of Sally and I just getting close, and really, the edginess of the material is a level of friendship that I feel like women often don’t get to. Women often stay on the surface. As much as we need each other, we often don’t admit that we do. I feel like that’s one of the things I loved about this series – getting the chance to be super honest even in the place of depravity – which is literally not living in grace – but being able to have grace in each other. How did you both get into acting? Sally: I was really, really, really shy as a kid because I
moved to so many different cities, and I would have culture shock on a regular basis. So I found out about a drama class after school one day, and it opened me up. I was maybe 11. Then I played Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz when I was 15, and I was like ‘yes this is it!’ I really enjoyed it, and it really got me out of my shell, because I didn’t talk to anybody for years; I didn’t have anyone to coerce with. I was from another country, and then another city. Pretty much every fours years of school we were moving around, so, really, theatre and drama brought out my personality. Rebecca: I started [acting] with my dad at church, and then we did plays together at the Des Moines Playhouse – a local community theatre. Once I got to college, it kind of had a different significance for me. Then I went to Africa, and all I wanted to do was come back and work on scenes. What kind of advice would both of you have for anyone reading this – especially women looking to get into show business or any business? Sally: You have to do it for the love of acting, because that can go out the window very quickly with all of the stuff that can go on around you. Acting has to be your passion beyond passion. It cannot be for any other reason: if you’re looking to get famous, go, if you are looking to be some sort of celebrity, or, I don’t know what. It has to be because you love material, and you love telling a story; otherwise, any other intention, there are reality shows out there, there are other things out there, but acting requires a lot of sacrifice and time and energy that you cannot afford to expend if you’re not really in love with the art. I mean a million percent, because this is the toughest business in the world. I get that being a doctor is tough too. There’s not a lot of work out there, so you got to love it. Rebecca: I’d say don’t be afraid to stick up for yourself, and don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t have power and that you’re not beautiful exactly as you are, because I see a lot of women trying to look like other women, but it’s the truly beautiful thing about themselves. If you can see that, and take time to love that, then other people will see it too. Sally: I definitely agree with that one.
