We'll continue enhancing Brisbane’s lifestyle in 2024 by delivering key projects.

Major road upgrades like the Moggill Road Corridor and Beams Road will help tackle congestion.

Commuters will start catching Brisbane Metro services in 2024 with further stages planned for new suburbs.

The Breakfast Creek and Kangaroo Point green bridges will open, offering great new connections.

We’ll also improve Brisbane’s lifestyle with new parks and playgrounds, including the Archerfield Wetlands District Parkland.

Projects like these, and many more, will help ensure Brisbane keeps getting better.

Record investment in smoother roads Council has been getting on with the job of making our roads smoother and safer to drive on through a record investment in road resurfacing.

Under our Smoother Suburban Streets initiative, we’ve already resurfaced more than 150 suburban streets this financial year, including:

New recruits keep buses moving Did you know more than two-thirds of Brisbane’s public transport trips are taken by bus?

Our bus operators help to keep our city moving, delivering more than 10,000 services every weekday across the city for residents and visitors. It’s no wonder customers want to thank the driver!

More than 500 recruits were brought on board as bus operators in 2023, with people from different walks of life, including transport and logistics, hospitality and university students, choosing to work at Council.

With such a big job to do, Council is always looking for more drivers to join our team.

Kick start your green waste recycling Start 2024 with a recycling win, and tick off your sustainability goals, by ordering a green bin for less than $1 a week.

Almost 20% of household general waste bins in Brisbane are made up of garden waste that is then sent to landfill.

Helping more households recycle their food waste As part of Council’s commitment to delivering our Towards Zero Waste vision, we’re helping residents reduce their food waste.

From 1 February, Brisbane’s food waste recycling service has expanded so that more than 12,000 households in selected areas across Brisbane can participate in the program. Participating residents are encouraged to place their food scraps (excluding meat and dairy), as well as their garden waste, in their green waste recycling bin.

The expanded food waste recycling service now includes addresses in Carina, Carina Heights, Norman Park, Westlake, New Farm, East Brisbane and West End.

The green waste recycling service helps residents recycle their garden waste, including: grass clippings small prunings palm fronds.

Your green waste is then collected and recycled into high-quality compost.

To keep sustainability affordable, Council has also increased the rebate on composting equipment to $100 and introduced a rebate of up to $200 on food waste dehydrators and in-sink food disposal systems.

It’s still cool in the pool with $2 Summer Dips Keep your cool in a Council pool with entry fees still $2 for the rest of the month!

Council’s popular $2 Summer Dips initiative runs until 29 February, which means anyone can beat the heat in a Council pool with a 2-buck coin!

The initiative was announced to provide cost-of-living relief to residents while offering more opportunities for fun, fitness and recreation.

More than half of Council pools have dedicated leisure pools with a variety of features, including wading pools, drop buckets and water guns.

Local news

A new home for sport in Nudgee Nudgee Recreation Reserve has been a hit with residents since it opened in time for the school holidays late last year.

The sports facility and parkland offer everything from mixed sporting fields, fitness equipment, a BMX track, a walking track around the reserve that continues for almost one kilometre, a playground and a dog off-leash area, all spread across 12.7 hectares.

The site, once landfill, has been completely transformed by Council into a one-stop shop for all things active and healthy.

BRISBANE’S NEWEST MUSEUM Discover the Brisbane Transport Museum, showcasing Queensland's bus history from 1925 to today, and the historical significance of Brisbane City Council being Queensland’s largest bus operator since 1948. The new museum, located at 600 Mains Road, Nathan, is in partnership with the Queensland Omnibus and Coach Society.

KERBSIDE LARGE ITEM COLLECTION Residents of Balmoral, Bulimba, Cannon Hill, Hawthorne, Hemmant, Lota, Lytton, Morningside, Murarrie and Wynnum can dispose of large household waste items with kerbside large item collection coming to these areas in February. The Nudgee Recreation Reserve will also become the north Brisbane home for Football Queensland in early 2024.

Archerfield Wetlands is on its way The Archerfield Wetlands District Park is shaping up to be one of 2024’s most exciting new community spaces.

Part of the 150-hectare Archerfield Wetlands Parkland, the new District Park will offer views out over the wetlands as well as a range of facilities including a basketball court, playground with waterplay elements, a lawn that can be used for events and picnic areas. There will also be a direct connection to the Archerfield Wetlands Discovery Trail.

Once complete, this will be a world-class destination for family gatherings, where you can even explore the bush resources garden and learn about traditional foods and medicines.

The new park is part of Council’s Oxley Creek Transformation project.

REPURPOSE AND RECYCLE AT CHANDLER Give your quality second-hand items a new lease on life by donating them to one of Council’s 4 resource recovery centres including one at Chandler. Quality pre-loved items can be dropped off for free and will be assessed for suitability by onsite staff.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Making inroads on major projects Major construction is underway at 2 key road corridor upgrades – Moggill Road, Indooroopilly, and Beams Road, Carseldine.

The bridge deck has now been installed on the new overpass at Moggill Road (pictured below). Construction on the overpass continues as we prepare to open it to vehicles soon. The project is expected to finish late 2024.

Introducing Brisbane’s newest green bridge Brisbane residents will be able to enjoy more than 700 metres of new and improved, dedicated active transport infrastructure when the Breakfast Creek Green Bridge opens.

Stretching from the popular Lores Bonney Riverwalk alongside Kingsford Smith Drive across the creek to Newstead Terrace at Halford Street, the bridge will provide a key active transport link between Brisbane’s inner city and northern suburbs.

Demolition of the roundabout has commenced at Beams and Dorville roads to turn the busy crossroads into a signalised intersection with pedestrian crossings.

Further upstream, the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is expected to open in the second half of 2024. To learn more about Council’s Green Bridges program, visit our website.

As part of the project, a new shared walking and riding path for residents is underway from Lacey Road to Balcara Avenue. The initial stage of the Beams Road upgrade project is set for completion in early 2025.

Spot a metro around Brisbane Council is giving you even more reasons to choose public transport with the introduction of Brisbane Metro in late 2024.

The turn-up-and-go metros will operate along our existing busways arriving every 5 minutes during peak times, getting you to where you want to go at the times you want to travel. The high-capacity and high-frequency metros are all electric, making your journey a sustainable way to travel.

by Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government.

Council keeping residents safe Brisbane is one of Australia’s most liveable cities for many reasons and Council is committed to keeping you and your loved ones safe all year round.

Council’s network of more than 3,400 CCTV cameras have helped to identify approximately 1,500 offences across the city over the past 12 months with plans to install more than 200 additional cameras this year. These cameras allow Council and emergency services to quickly respond to and prevent crime across our city.

Council’s newest solar-powered cameras will mean even quicker response, with the cameras being able to be easily relocated on an as-needs basis and installation times as fast as 30 minutes.

Residents enjoying a vibrant suburban precinct

Reinvigorating Brisbane suburbs Council’s Suburban Renewal Precincts initiative is breathing new life into Brisbane’s suburbs.

The initiative aims to identify areas for renewal such as underutilised industrial land that can be transformed to include a mix of uses that support better housing, employment and recreation for residents.

Council has already identified more than 70 hectares of industrial land suitable for renewal in areas such as Runcorn and Yeronga, and will work with site owners and local communities on planning for new uses.
