Green Heart Fair is back!

Get tips on how to live more sustainably at Brisbane’s favourite sustainable living festival, the Green Heart Fair on Sunday 30 May.

Returning to 7th Brigade Park, Chermside, the free, family and dog-friendly event will feature more than 120 sustainable living experts.

How brilliant is Brisbane in autumn? With the days still warm, there are few better times of the year to get out and enjoy our wonderful city, be it a meal at one of our renowned restaurants or a trip to one of our beautiful parks.

Learn about innovative products and services; listen to presentations on green living, gardening and recycling; and get practical tips in hands-on workshops.

In fact, food lovers shouldn’t miss our Dine BNE City event, from 13-30 May. There will be more than 80 great deals on offer from dozens of restaurants and bars throughout the CBD. Our hospitality scene has been through a tough time of late, so we’re backing them by encouraging people to take up these offers.

While you’re there, make sure to visit Council’s marquee to learn about Brisbane’s urban forest, waterways and invasive species, engage with our environmentally kid-friendly nature play activities and pick up free native plants for your garden.

The event culminates with the return of the much-loved Sea to the City, the alfresco seafood event by the river.

Brisbane’s premier sustainable living festival, Green Heart Fair, is also back this month, along with Botanica – Contemporary Art Outside which takes over the City Botanic Gardens.

There are also food trucks to suit all types of foodies and live music.

Finally, it’s also that time of year when planned burns are undertaken to help reduce the risk of bushfires. We’ll ensure residents get advanced notice if they live near a planned burn area, with more information available online.

Sprucing up local shopping precincts New shade trees and garden beds, footpath upgrades, and new street furniture are some of the upgrades we’re making to local shopping strips in 10 new Village Precinct Projects across the city.

More than just a facelift, the projects will aim to make suburban areas more attractive to shop, dine and socialise, giving a much needed boost to local businesses.

Progress for Green Bridges program Progress is ramping up on our Green Bridges program to help stimulate the local economy and make it even easier for you to get around our city on foot, by bike or scooter, or by connecting with public transport.

We recently lodged the development applications for the Kangaroo Point and Breakfast Creek Green Bridges as a major step forward for the program.

The final design for the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge will be revealed following the announcement of the successful contractor in the coming months.

Over the next four years, we’re investing $10.5 million on Village Precinct Projects.

The detailed design for the Breakfast Creek Green Bridge will also be released soon, featuring a distinctive arch and new landing plaza at Newstead Park.

Community consultation on the alignment options for the two West End Green Bridges closed on 31 March, with results to be released later this month. Your feedback will help to inform the preferred alignment and guide the preparation of the business case for each bridge later this year.

Brisbane’s newest riverwalk to open We’re putting the finishing touches on Brisbane’s newest riverwalk in Indooroopilly, set to open in the next couple of weeks.

› 60+ jobs supported by the project

Locals will soon enjoy walking, running or riding along the 790-metre-long, five‑metre-wide, separated two-way riverwalk.

› 5 to 14 metres above the average river tide

Whether you’re exercising or commuting, the Indooroopilly Riverwalk offers a safe and accessible route from Twigg Street to the Jack Pesch Bridge and Indooroopilly Rail Station, with connections to Radnor Street and Riverview Terrace.

Stop at the viewing platform along the way to enjoy views of the Brisbane River and the iconic Walter Taylor Bridge.

Stay healthy this winter Winter is coming, which is a good reminder to immunise against the flu.

Did you know Council’s community immunisation clinics offer free flu vaccinations for eligible residents, including seniors and children under five years?

Our community immunisation clinics also offer paid vaccines for flu, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

July marks 90 years since Council began its community immunisation program with the opening of the first clinic on the top floor of Brisbane City Hall.

Since then, the clinics have expanded to 14 different locations, catering to more than 8300 residents per year.

Vic Park starts transformation The transformation of Victoria Park into an iconic parkland is one step closer with the closure of the 18-hole golf course at sunset on Wednesday 30 June.

Early works will then tee off on creating Brisbane’s biggest new park which will have something for everybody – a natural retreat and urban park for adventure, discovery and reconnection.

The Victoria Park function centre, driving range, putt-putt and bistro will continue to operate.

Brisbane's iconic gardens hit new milestones Two of Brisbane’s biggest and most popular gardens celebrate significant birthdays this year.

Across the river, construction is well underway on a brand-new 18-hole public golf course in the Minnippi residential precinct in Cannon Hill. Due to open in mid-2022, it will be Brisbane’s first public golf course in 70 years, joining St Lucia Golf Links, which opened in 1926.

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha marks its 45th anniversary.

Officially opened in 1976, it receives around 1.4 million visitors each year and has more than 200,000 plants from around 5000 different species.

Inner-city favourite, Roma Street Parkland also celebrated its 20th anniversary this month. Once the site of the Brisbane Markets and a railway yard, it’s now loved for its designer gardens that wind around 16 hectares of stunning parklands. Enjoy free community events and seasonal plantings that will be held in honour of its birthday until April 2022.

IN BRIEF PLANNED BURNS BEGIN This month, planned burns are set to begin (weather permitting). Planned burns aim to reduce fire fuel and lessen the impact of bushfires on homes and natural habitats.

Residents living near the burn areas will be notified by mail, with notifications also posted on Council's website, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Entries open for the Brisbane Portrait Prize Put your artistic flair on show and go into the running to win up to $50,000 with the 2021 Brisbane Portrait Prize.

Now in its third year, the competition showcases artworks capturing the spirit of Brisbane, with artists and portrait subjects having a connection to our river city.

Styles from photography, drawing and painting to collage and digital portraits are accepted. If art appreciation is more your style, you can get involved by voting for the People’s Choice Award.

Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust has been caring for the Brisbane community since the 1950s, helping to fund local, grassroots charities and activities tackling issues such as homelessness, domestic violence and food scarcity.

With a focus on smaller organisations that typically don’t receive significant funding, the Trust helps Brisbane charities at the frontline of the community.

The Trust supports around 90 different charities each year, with every dollar donated going directly to charity.

Brisbane residents have the option to donate their $15 rate discount to the Trust. These generous donations have made a profound impact. Thanks to these ratepayer donations, the Trust was recently able to distribute $92,970 to 28 different charities across Brisbane.

More eyes on illegal dumping hotspots This year, Council is investing more than $2.7 million in the enforcement and prevention of illegally dumped waste.

Thanks to a $250,000 grant from the Queensland Government, we’re monitoring hotspots at Forest Lake, Sunnybank Hills, Chermside, Willawong and Inala more effectively.

Each year, households receive 10 vouchers for general and green waste, which can be used at Council’s four Resource Recovery Centres.

Council also runs four free household hazardous waste collection drop-off days throughout the year, to make disposing of hazardous waste safe and easy for everyone. Visit our website for upcoming dates.

Be a reading star Open a book to go on an adventure or learn something new as part of Council’s Gold Star (6-12 years) and Little Stars (5 years and under) reading clubs program.

Register online on our website or at one of Council’s 33 libraries and earn rewards for the number of books read. There are monthly prizes and a medallion and certificate for kids who complete the program by the end of July.

It’s just one of many ways Brisbane libraries nurture a joy of reading, with regular children’s literacy sessions, free school holiday activities, and coding and robotics workshops.

Outdoor art festivals are back with a bang this month, popping up across the city and the suburbs.

Brisbane’s brightest after-dark art exhibition, Botanica – Contemporary Art Outside is taking over the City Botanic Gardens from 7-16 May. See sculptural works, large-scale projections and interactive installations. Make it a night out and also enjoy the live music, food trucks and outdoor bar on the weekend.

Walls, bridges and buildings are being turned into live canvases for the Brisbane Street Art Festival (BSAF), running until Sunday 16 May.
