The next chapter of libraries in Brisbane: Lord Mayor

Brisbane’s libraries are great places for free and affordable fun and that’s why our Council continues to invest in them.

The upgraded Zillmere Library recently reopened, featuring a vibrant new children’s space and dedicated young adults’ area. We’re also building a new Everton Park Library and planning is underway for a brand-new library in Indooroopilly.

You can now also access borrowed items 24/7 with our new smart library lockers in Holland Park and Carina. Four more are planned for Grange, Mitchelton, New Farm and Bracken Ridge.

Whether it’s finding a good book, visiting a free workshop, or gathering with friends, we are making sure our libraries are worth reading about.

SEPTEMBER 2023
Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner

Brisbane’s newest public golf course

Council has opened a premier public golf course in Cannon Hill, creating more to see and do in Brisbane.

Minnippi Golf Course is a uniquely designed 18-hole golf course with two 9-hole loops or three 6-hole loops. There’s a driving range and a temporary Pro-shop and food available onsite with permanent facilities planned to be opened shortly.

Built on a former landfill site, the entire development covers 125 hectares and the course includes habitat conservation areas.

Protecting the natural environment while producing a contemporary course has been an integral focus of the design.

Minnippi Golf Course is another way Council is building on Brisbane’s diverse and accessible recreational opportunities for all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

For more information, visit Council’s website and search ‘Minnippi Golf Course’.

Local parks get new courts

A new purpose-built pickleball court has opened at Joachim Street Park in Holland Park West, with 4 more courts on the way, helping residents stay active and healthy.

Described as a cross between badminton and tennis, pickleball first landed in Australia in 2015. The sport quickly became a Brisbane favourite for its ability to be enjoyed by all ages and fitness levels.

Council is building new courts at:

Š Greenways Esplanade Park, Parkinson

Š Enoggera Creek Sport and Recreation Precinct, Newmarket

Š Sheriff Park, Wakerley

Š John Magee Park, Seventeen Mile Rocks.

Council is committed to ensuring residents have a variety of free and low-cost opportunities to maintain an active lifestyle, particularly with the increasing cost of living.

Be prepared. Scan the QR code for advice on how to prepare your home and household and stay safe.

Cultural

Centre station update

Are you one of the thousands of people who travel through the Cultural Centre busway station each day? You may have noticed the newly opened inbound platform one, transformed as part of the Brisbane Metro project.

Overall station works are expected to be complete by mid-2024, providing a more comfortable experience with wider footpaths, shaded platforms, realigned lifts, enhanced landscaping and improved wayfinding and accessibility.

Works also include major platform extensions to increase station capacity in preparation for future metro services commencing in late 2024.

Scan the QR code to explore the future Cultural Centre Precinct.

Improving Brisbane roads

Council is improving our road network to help make Brisbane’s roads even safer.

This includes replacing cracked, damaged roads, road resurfacing, and repairing potholes.

Bridge travel time savings revealed

The Kangaroo Point Green Bridge will reduce travel times and provide safe active transport connections for the thousands of residents and visitors expected to use it each day.

A walk from Kangaroo Point to the CBD will be almost half an hour quicker than it is now, taking just 8 minutes!

Bike or e-scooter riders will be able to make the same journey in only 3 minutes.

A walk between The Gabba and the city centre, which currently takes almost an hour by foot, will be halved using the new bridge.

Arriving in the city, a new signalised crossing on the corner of Edward and Alice streets will help safely connect bridge users to surrounding footpath and bikeway networks.

If you see a pothole or road damage, report it by contacting Council via our 24/7 Call Centre on 3403 8888 or visit our website.

Council’s investment will make sure all road users, including cyclists, are travelling on safe roads, keeping you on track to your destination.

For more information, search ‘road resurfacing’ on our website.

Council is taking another step towards keeping Brisbane clean, green and sustainable with a feasibility study into a fully electric ferry, the EVCat.
