Brisbane’s libraries are great places for free and affordable fun and that’s why our Council continues to invest in them.

The upgraded Zillmere Library recently reopened, featuring a vibrant new children’s space and dedicated young adults’ area. We’re also building a new Everton Park Library and planning is underway for a brand-new library in Indooroopilly.

You can now also access borrowed items 24/7 with our new smart library lockers in Holland Park and Carina. Four more are planned for Grange, Mitchelton, New Farm and Bracken Ridge.

Whether it’s finding a good book, visiting a free workshop, or gathering with friends, we are making sure our libraries are worth reading about.

Brisbane’s newest public golf course

Council has opened a premier public golf course in Cannon Hill, creating more to see and do in Brisbane.

Minnippi Golf Course is a uniquely designed 18-hole golf course with two 9-hole loops or three 6-hole loops. There’s a driving range and a temporary Pro-shop and food available onsite with permanent facilities planned to be opened shortly.

Built on a former landfill site, the entire development covers 125 hectares and the course includes habitat conservation areas.

Protecting the natural environment while producing a contemporary course has been an integral focus of the design.

Minnippi Golf Course is another way Council is building on Brisbane’s diverse and accessible recreational opportunities for all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Local parks get new courts

A new purpose-built pickleball court has opened at Joachim Street Park in Holland Park West, with 4 more courts on the way, helping residents stay active and healthy.

Described as a cross between badminton and tennis, pickleball first landed in Australia in 2015. The sport quickly became a Brisbane favourite for its ability to be enjoyed by all ages and fitness levels.

Š John Magee Park, Seventeen Mile Rocks.

Boredom-busting school holiday fun

Open up your September planner because there’s heaps to do these school holidays!

From programming a Rugged Robot to yoga for young people, there are hundreds of free and affordable activities to keep all ages happy. The Planetarium will host new family-friendly shows, and a live musical performance, Zoom to the Moon

Our libraries offer fun and free activities for the whole family, including a live-music show from Red Rocket 3, while the Intelino Train will teach kids basic coding skills in a screenfree environment!

Combine nature and creativity at the nature card making workshop in the Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre.

Ready, set…get moving!

Take advantage of the warmer weather and get outside for a brisk walk or run. Brisbane has views to inspire and tracks to suit all running levels – whether you are preparing for Bridge to Brisbane or just looking for some fresh air.

Š River run: The 5 km route between the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and New Farm is one of Brisbane’s most scenic.

Š Bayside beauty: The spectacular 6.5 km Sandgate Foreshore promenade provides a waterside route with plenty to see on the way.

Š Go off road: Discover more than 70 nature tracks and trails across the Mt Coot-tha precinct, that also make great trail running routes.

Decorate your home for less

Want to revamp your home while sticking to a budget? Visit Council’s Treasure Troves where you can pick up quality second-hand items for a fraction of the price.

Find furniture, homewares, books, hardware items and sporting equipment. Be sure to keep an eye out for unique gems, such as musical instruments, jewellery, artwork, antiques and more!

Operated by the Endeavour Foundation, Treasure Troves are a way of giving a new life to household items destined for landfill. If you are spring cleaning, you can donate high-quality, usable items at our resource recovery centres at Nudgee Beach, Willawong, Ferny Grove and Chandler for free.

Visit our Treasure Troves in Acacia Ridge and Geebung every weekend from 8am-4pm each day.

Mark your calendar! Pre-sale tickets for the Lord Mayor’s Seniors Christmas Party evening shows go on sale online from 4 October. This year, there’ll be 15 shows from 4-8 December. Free green waste recycling weekends

Bushfire season is just around the corner and it’s more important than ever to make sure your home is prepared for severe weather by raking up your garden leaves and twigs, and remember to clear your gutters.

Brisbane City Council is helping our residents be prepared by offering free green waste recycling weekends at all resource recovery centres in the lead up to warmer weather/bushfire season.

Drop off your green waste at any of our resource recovery centres located in Chandler, Nudgee, Willawong and Ferny Grove on 9-10 September, 7-8 October and 11-12 November.

Acceptable green waste includes grass clippings, palm fronds, weeds, shrub and tree prunings, loose bark and leaves.

KERBSIDE LARGE ITEM COLLECTION

Residents of Doolandella, Durack and Inala can dispose of their large household waste items with kerbside large item collection coming to these areas in September. Place accepted items on the kerbside the weekend before your scheduled collection starts. Download the free Brisbane Bin and Recycling app to check what items are accepted and your 2023-24 collection week.

Centre station update

Are you one of the thousands of people who travel through the Cultural Centre busway station each day? You may have noticed the newly opened inbound platform one, transformed as part of the Brisbane Metro project.

Overall station works are expected to be complete by mid-2024, providing a more comfortable experience with wider footpaths, shaded platforms, realigned lifts, enhanced landscaping and improved wayfinding and accessibility.

Works also include major platform extensions to increase station capacity in preparation for future metro services commencing in late 2024.

Improving Brisbane roads

Council is improving our road network to help make Brisbane’s roads even safer.

This includes replacing cracked, damaged roads, road resurfacing, and repairing potholes.

Bridge travel time savings revealed

The Kangaroo Point Green Bridge will reduce travel times and provide safe active transport connections for the thousands of residents and visitors expected to use it each day.

A walk from Kangaroo Point to the CBD will be almost half an hour quicker than it is now, taking just 8 minutes!

Bike or e-scooter riders will be able to make the same journey in only 3 minutes.

A walk between The Gabba and the city centre, which currently takes almost an hour by foot, will be halved using the new bridge.

Arriving in the city, a new signalised crossing on the corner of Edward and Alice streets will help safely connect bridge users to surrounding footpath and bikeway networks.

Council’s investment will make sure all road users, including cyclists, are travelling on safe roads, keeping you on track to your destination.

Have you got a community project but need support to see it come to life? Check out some of Council’s upcoming grants.

The Lord Mayor’s Environment Grant provides funds to not-for-profit community-based groups for environmental projects and activities. Green-thumbed groups and not-for-profits can apply for a Cultivating Community Gardens Grant to establish, develop and maintain community gardens on Council-owned and other land.

The Creative Spark Grants Program supports artists and not-for-profit community arts, historical and cultural organisations to create and present work. The Lord Mayor’s Creative Fellowships help artists, arts workers, cultural workers or creative producers to expand their careers by supporting professional development opportunities.
