he stadium was packed, the crowd impassioned, the noise deafening and the talent on show simply electric. I found myself resisting the urge to jump to my feet and clap uproariously, to wolf whistle at ear-shattering volume. No, this wasn’t at the Adele concert. This was at a recent Firebirds game, where in a nail-biting battle the home netball team was narrowly edged out by Suncorp Super Netball league newcomers Coolingwood Magpies. Firebirds captain Gabi Simpson, featured in our Queensland Women’s Week feature (P10) was in fine form. Like many women, I played netball every weekend during my school years. Not very well, mind you, but it was fun. On the court, I learned to work as part of a team and how to be a good sport if the result didn’t go our way. I also learned to be tough (without being rough), how to defend my position (in the world) and when it was OK to attack (but not bully). And watching the Firebirds taught me that it’s a good thing my daughter also plays the game. She’s taken on as role models those women sweating on that court. I hope she emulates the strength and power they displayed.

Krissy Marsh 46 • The Real Housewives of Sydney The show may be based on drama and diva antics, but Brisbane-born beauty Krissy Marsh says those who believe the women on The Real Housewives of Sydney are simply spoilt bimbos are sadly mistaken. The accomplished Queenslander, who has been dubbed “the quintessential Australian girl” of the reality TV series, has been building her empire since the age of four, when she started modelling. “We always call my mum the ‘Kris Jenner’ because there were four of us girls growing up in the house and doing modelling and mum ran it all,” Krissy says. Growing up in Mt Gravatt, Krissy starred in her first film at six. By 15, she was walking for David Jones and Myer, and at 16 she had bought her first property. “My dad, who was a property developer in Queensland, was always like, ‘You’ve got to work – you make your own money and you never have to rely on a man’. My dad tagged me ‘the property princess’. It’s a very male-dominated industry but he always brought us up to be on an equal playing field.” Krissy, who speaks three languages, flew to Sydney at 18. Alongside study and modelling, she explored careers in business, finance and hospitality, looking after the likes of Princess Diana and Madonna, before moving to Italy for 18 months. She managed her own successful property company, which she sold to LJ Hooker, before leaving to live in Shanghai, China, where she was based with her husband Johnny and their three children Billy, 13, Nicco, 11, and Milana, 8, for three years. “We moved back to Sydney last year for my eldest to start high school and the plan is that Johnny will move back mid-year. It is hard being apart but I can always call him.” Krissy says that although she has always worked, she admires women who are stay-at-home mums. “I think that is a far harder job than to go out and run your own business – it’s not easy to sit at home with baby food all day. That was one of the reasons that I started my own business because I couldn’t stay at home all day; I needed something else. It is a hard juggle – everyone says you can have it all but I really, truly believe you cannot have it all at the one time.” Krissy, who is a “big goal-setter”, says she will never forget her roots. “I’m constantly in Brisbane – Queenslanders are very lucky. It will always be my state of origin.”

5 Things You May Not Know About Contact Lenses last decade. They provide excellent vision at all distances no matter where your eyes are pointing and work completely differently to multifocal or progressive spectacles” explains David Foresto, principal optometrist at Foresto EyeQ Optometrists.
Contact lenses are well known for being excellent for sport and for giving better peripheral vision than spectacles, but there are also some things about contact lenses you may not know. BETTER VISION WITH CONTACT LENSES Patients with high prescriptions often have better vision with contact lenses. This is especially true for patients with high powered prescriptions or patients with diseases of the cornea such as keratoconus or corneal transplants1,2. CLARITY AT ALL DISTANCES – MULTIFOCAL CONTACT LENSES These lenses enable clear vision at all distances and offer total freedom from glasses. For patients who require multifocal or reading glasses, multifocal contact lenses can be an excellent option. “Multifocal contact lenses are one of the biggest innovations in vision care in the
COMFORT LIKE NEVER BEFORE – DESIGNED FOR DRYNESS In the past, patients with dry eye were often unable to wear contact lenses. Now, there are contact lens materials specifically designed for patients with dry eye offering comfort like never before. Some lenses on the market now incorporate a gellike coating onto the surface to minimise friction on blinking and greatly improve the comfort over long hours. SOME CONTACT LENSES ARE USED TO TREAT DRY EYE Using contact lenses to treat dry eye is commonplace. “We are fortunate to receive referrals from ophthalmologists and other optometrists for contact lens fittings. One of the biggest growth areas is for the treatment of severe dry eye. We take 3D scans to create custom lenses which hold a chamber of lubricant onto the patient’s eyes all day. This has been shown to reduce the discomfort for dry eyes3.
SOMETIMES EVEN BABIES NEED CONTACT LENSES Around 1 in 5000 babies born in Australia are born with cataracts4. These children are often born almost completely blind and require surgery and contact lenses fitted within weeks of being born. “Fitting contact lenses for babies is the most challenging and most rewarding part of what we do at our practice” explains David Foresto. There are only a handful of optometrists in Australia who can fit contact lenses for babies. “It is very challenging work but it’s a huge privilege to be a part of”.

omen of substance are in the spotlight this week. A raft of events will be held across Brisbane and the state as part of Queensland Women’s Week (March 6-12). Coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8, the week celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women, both past and present. The theme of “Queensland Women: Be involved. Lead the way” encourages women and girls to give their all, and pursue leadership roles in their various communities and places of work. With that in mind, Brisbane News sat down with four successful women who are leading the way in their chosen fields.

Gabi SIMPSON
It took a year for Gabi Simpson to call Brisbane home but now the Queensland Firebirds captain can’t imagine living anywhere else. “I’m (settled) here and I love it. Everyone is just a bit more laid-back but they still get the job done – often with a smile on their face,’’ says Gabi, who is entering her fifth year with the Firebirds. “I also like that Brisbane is sunny.’’ Gabi (left) started playing netball aged eight, and fell in love with the game’s athleticism. She was a young athletics star, but the former Australian under-18 heptathlon champion chose netball because of the team atmosphere. The Sydney-born 24-year-old is the new Firebirds leader, having been handed the baton by club great Laura Geitz. Gabi says this year is a season of growth with a young team ready to tackle a new season and a new competition – Suncorp Super Netball. Gabi won the captaincy after being voted in by her teammates and admits to a “sense of surprise and excitement’’. “It’s really important to me to have the backing of the player group. The captaincy is a huge honour, especially knowing the previous leaders.’’ Gabi is especially conscious of the legacy of Laura, who led the Firebirds to ANZ championships in 2011, 2015 and 2016. “The biggest piece of advice Geitzy gave me was to trust everyone else to take care of their roles to ensure you remain focused on yourself when it comes to game day.” Gabi is close to completing a physiotherapy degree at UQ, St Lucia. She already has some favourite Brisbane haunts, especially near her Coorparoo home. “I eat out for breakfast a lot and I love The Jam Pantry at Greenslopes. The coffee is fantastic and my go-to meal is scrambled eggs on toast with bacon,’’ says Gabi, who spends her rare spare time going to the beach or on bushwalks on the Sunshine Coast. Queensland Firebirds play NSW Swifts at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Fri, Mar 10, from 7.30pm. firebirds.net.au Fiona Purdon

There is never a dull moment in the day for Professor Suzanne Miller. Recently appointed Queensland’s chief scientist, the 51-year-old mother-of-one has also decided to keep her job as chief executive and director of the Queensland Museum. “I do three days a week as chief scientist and two days at the museum, but there is an incredible crossover with both roles. I pretty much find myself with both hats on,” she says. “Chief scientist is really about providing a high level of advice to the government about science and research, and identifying where we need to focus our energies. “At the museum I never know from one day to the next what’s going to happen. “I could be watching venom taken out of a north Queensland tarantula or assisting with exquisite pieces like the Book of the Dead in our Egypt collection,” Suzanne (below) says. “I get to handle some of the most precious objects in the world. Suzanne grew up in the UK and went to school in Scotland, where she first took an interest in science. She’s keen to encourage today’s youngsters to consider a career as a scientist, including daughter Grace, 9. “I always absolutely loved science and I had some amazing teachers. My parents also encouraged me. My dad actually became one of my students when I was a university lecturer and he decided to do a science degree. “Being a scientist is about a way of thinking. It’s about looking at evidence and making a decision. That’s a skill you can apply to anything in life. It gives you the ability to make a decision for yourself without having to rely on the word of someone else. It’s incredibly empowering.” For Suzanne, the next two years will involve focusing on growing jobs for Queensland and resolving issues around the Great Barrier Reef. “In the medical field, the next five years promise some extraordinary outcomes in bionics and drug development that could have massive benefits and be literally life-saving.” Suzanne is married to documentary film producer Keith Halden. The couple has been in Australia for nine years and in Brisbane for three of those. “We have an apartment in South Bank and so I get to walk to work. It’s amazing having the beach and the park outside. It’s such a great place to live.” Hannah Davies

ROAD TO FAME ...
Jock Barnes and Trent McArdle.
I was born in Brissy and raised in Kingaroy. Mum was a hairdresser and Dad worked in the mines. All my folks are from Blackall and Longreach, so we have a lot of country ties, I suppose. I grew up with country music. We went to bed listening to Garth Brooks, Lee Kernaghan, John Williamson. It was my family’s taste in music and it just filtered down. Our band Route 33 started as a pipe dream, just something we enjoyed. Every step for us now is just excitement – from writing the songs, to recording in studios, to performing them, and then to the launch of our new album, The Switch. We’re just keen to get back in the studio to do the next thing and see how it runs. We did Tamworth (Country Music Festival) last year. That was our first taste of our own stuff – getting used to playing shorter, sharper gigs and being proud of what you’re delivering. We supported Viper Creek Band down in Newcastle – they’re a pretty well-established country rock band in Australia at the moment. Trent backs me in making a call and it works vice versa. We’ve sort of fallen into different roles. I guess you could call me admin and then Trent runs it on stage. Over the years it’s made for a good pair.
Trent McArdle • 30 We met through Jock’s brother (international rugby player) Berrick. Berrick and I were the same age. I suppose I was like the annoying brother who was always hanging around (their house). I was born in Brisbane and Jock was in Kingaroy. We met through swimming and from there it was footy – we would have been about eight or nine. Growing up, his parents had a house in Indooroopilly, so we used to have a lot of family Christmases there. It wasn’t until our early 20s that we started looking at music. We went over to Nashville to watch the CMAs (Country Music Association Awards) about 18 months ago. We were writing a bit, as a hobby. We watched that and thought that was something we could probably pursue. So we came back and said, “Let’s have a crack at this”. We wrote a song, then wrote a few more, and then took them into the studio. I honestly think – and this hasn’t come from me, it’s come from a mate – that the best thing about our relationship is that we can be honest with each other. If I’m not pulling my weight or Jock’s not pulling his weight, we can call each other out. If we’re doing something stupid we can have an honest conversation – kind of like sibling rivalry; you just take it on board and move on.

Brown who is not anxious and is sometimes late for appointments and who doesn’t mind if everything on his desk is not placed at right angles? Think about the opposite of you on one of these other worlds. It does your head in, right? I don’t know why we bother postulating about such things because unless we invent travel by wormhole soon, none of us will be visiting these possible other Earths. Ever. So far we have only managed to get to the moon, unless you subscribe to the theory that the moon landings were faked. We have sent spaceships – without humans – into the outer reaches of the solar system. If you’re one of those nutters who has signed on for a voyage to Mars, forget it. It’s just not going to happen.
I find all this space stuff a bit mind-boggling. My feeble grey matter simply cannot comprehend the vastness of the universe and to hear that there may be other universes – well, that’s just too much. Are there multiple versions of each of us in various parallel universes? I was quite comfortable with the idea that we were alone in the vastness of space. And as far as finding other Earths – let’s face it. We’re having enough trouble with this one, so I didn’t think we need to worry about other Earths which may or may not be out there. But if they are, maybe there’s another Phil Brown writing this exact same column, right now. Scary, huh?

oney is a firm friend of the cook and runs the gamut from savoury to sweet preparations. In desserts, substitute for sugar to give nuance and character to your creations. When used in savoury dishes, acidity is necessary to redress the balance. The Italians call this agrodolce – sour-sweet. Explore the vast personality of honey, from strong and aromatic to fruity to floral. Source honey that has not been heated, is of single origin and one that is gently filtered, therefore retaining its pollen.

Melt the butter in a small pot over low heat then allow to cool. Meanwhile, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a large bowl. In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and eggs. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk until the dry ingredients are just incorporated. Add the cooled melted butter and stir in. Refrigerate the batter for an hour before using. Preheat a heavy based frypan over medium heat. Add a small amount of butter to the pan and swipe with some kitchen paper to grease the pan lightly. 3tbs of batter makes a nice-sized pancake. Cook 3-4 pancakes at a time and when bubbles form on the surface – 1-2 mins – carefully flip and cook for a further minute. Transfer to a tray, keep warm and repeat until all the batter is used. HONEY ROASTED PLUMS Preheat oven to 180C. In a small bowl, combine melted butter, vanilla, honey and lemon zest. Halve and deseed plums and place, cut side down, on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Pour over honey liquor and roast in preheated oven for 8-10 mins. The flesh should yield to the touch with the skin just starting to split. Serve with pancakes and a further drizzle of honey. Serves 4. uring the past couple of weeks I’ve been flicking through Luke Nguyen’s book, Greater Mekong, with pictures, stories and recipes from the regions and cuisines that hug the Mekong River. It’s the sort of stuff that makes me obsess a little. I want to cook and eat everything it contains. Much of it is a stretch for the average Brisbane pantry – mine included – but enough can be approximated, the rest just dreamed about. There’s a fallback – Fat Noodle at Treasury Casino. It bears Luke Nguyen’s name and dishes out his food, cooked by others. Walking into the restaurant is an engaging experience – it looks fantastic in a precocious modern restaurant meets heritage building meets traditional Asian kind of way. There’s plenty of dark timber panelling, a parquetry floor and teapots galore. A big open kitchen produces an extraordinary melange of aromas. Fat Noodle gets busy and things happen at a cracking pace, so at times you need to wave for attention (especially if you stand in the wrong spot when you first arrive). But once in their sights, the wait staff bangs things out with alarming efficiency. The food is of mixed Asian heritage – plenty of Chinese and Vietnamese, but also Thai, Korean, Indonesian and even Japanese. Fat pho noodles ($24, inset) are the signature dish and double as Brisbane’s most expensive pho. The propaganda tells us that the broth – the essence of the dish – is a 20-hour affair, and it certainly has the intensity and delicacy that reeks of good ingredients and long, slow simmering. But the real mark of the broth are the wood spices: they’re exotic, complex and a little unexpected. The meat is Angus sirloin and brisket, thinly sliced (but too large to manage neatly). It is terrific pho and, given the surrounds, well worth the outlay. Salt and pepper silken tofu ($13) falls a little short. It looks great, garnished with fried chilli and garlic, but is too salty (slim on pepper) and way too oily. Shame. Prawn dumplings ($12) again take the prize for the most expensive in town, but you could scour most of Sunnybank and Chinatown without finding any quite as good. And a wok dish of spicy pork with noodles and fresh herbs ($20) is delicious and good value. The drinks list is solid but doesn’t scale the heights of the exotic cuisine and surrounds, which is a pity – the place could be stellar. As it stands, Fat Noodle is atmospheric, fast-paced and peddles some of the best Asian food in town.

KINDRED SPIRIT Singer’s Scottish lilt hits a sentimental note

ddi Reader will be making a special pilgrimage to Fortitude Valley when she arrives in Brisbane for her one-night-only concert. The Scottish singer, who shot to fame in the late ’80s as the frontwoman of British pop group Fairground Attraction – with the number-one hit Perfect – wants to see the city’s homage to Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns. The statue in Centenary Place, Wickham St, Fortitude Valley, was paid for by the Queensland Scottish Association and the Brisbane Burns Club. It was officially unveiled in 1929. Eddi isn’t surprised the wordsmith has been honoured so far from his native country. For homesick expat Scots, Burns is a touchstone, a reminder of who they are, she says. “Burns has become almost like the Bible to people who were removed from Scotland,” Eddie, 57, says, referring to the dark period from the 1600s where political strife and famine saw hundreds of thousands of people exhiled from their homeland. “The Scottish settlers in Northern Ireland took with them the Bible and a copy of Burns’ first book of poetry.” Eddi’s respect for the man inspired her to turn Burns’ poems and lyrics into an album recorded in 2003, and re-released as an extended version to mark his 250th birthday in 2009. Burns has “I just love the songs and I wanted to re-record them become almost in a way that made them feel like they were written like the Bible to yesterday by Bob Dylan or Tom Waits.” people who were She says people with a Scottish heritage seem to have removed from a “cultural attachment” gene in their DNA. During her Scotland last Australian tour, expats drawn to her accent asked her to talk more. “That’s when I realised I was playing to people who seemed a little homesick,” she said. Eddi’s genes could also explain her love of Burns. When a relative died and Eddi helped to clean out his home, she found posters for shows by her great-grandfather Charles. Charles sang Robert Burns songs in halls and lodges across Scotland. “That was a spine-chilling moment for me,” she says. EDDI READER: THe SONGS OF ROBERT BURNS, Mar 16, $69-89,

VIBRANT … Nautilus, Pineapple Music and It was just after dusk and the quiet had begun to descend (inset).
ueenslanders are a talented lot. But you knew that, right? I’m always amazed at how much artistic activity is going on around our great state and I’m reminded of this by Flying Arts, an organisation that promotes and supports artists in the far-flung regions. The exhibition Colours of Queensland is a good example of what’s going on out yonder, with one overarching consideration – colour. This exhibition, now at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley, is the outcome of the 2016 Queensland Regional Art Awards. Artists were asked to consider what brings colour, vibrancy and life to their local communities. The show of 179 works, chosen by Brisbane art dealer and award panellist Andrew Baker, will tour Queensland after we city slickers have had a look at it. Karen Stephens won this year’s awards with her work Noogooraville, a landscape painting that investigates the Noogoora burr, a weed in western Queensland. Who knew a weed could look so good? Another colourful work is Rockhampton artist Carmen Beezley-Drake’s Mapping the Colours, a broad abstract landscape. One of my favourites is Edwin Hamill’s Pineapple Music. I must confess I’m a sucker for anything with a pineapple in it. I reckon the pineapple is a great, funky image that is synonymous with Queensland, particularly because of the Big Pineapple. As Edwin, from Buderim, says, his work does relate to that tourist icon and the Big Pineapple Music Festival held near it. “The festival gives off a somewhat relaxed vibe which I have tried to covey with the use of loose brushstrokes, simple figures and an overall abstract tone,” he says.
It helps that it has a giant pineapple in it, too! One of the most arresting works has to be Dasha Riley’s rather gorgeous digital photographic print entitled Nautilus, which depicts a girl riding an emu, holding a nautilus in her hand. It’s a cracker. I was also taken with Mieke den Otter’s rather interesting wall sculpture made from wood and silk, dyed with ironbark leaves. It’s called It was just after dusk and the quiet had begun to descend (great title). This piece looks like a moth, something which only occurred to the artist after it was hung on a white wall to be photographed. “The textures and colours are reminiscent of the beautiful surface marks made by the scribbly gum moth on its home tree,” the artist says. “Only a quarter of moths in the natural world have been named. It’s an unseen world and we need to respect its diversity.” Another work I loved was Hanging out the washing by north Queensland artist Caroline Lieber. Caroline lives at Mount Molloy near Cairns. “This is a special place,” Caroline says. “There is colour and vibrancy all around. When I hang out the washing, the bright-coloured towels flap in the breeze and I look beyond to the range. I feel very fortunate.” I love the sentiment and I love the painting. So simple, so sincere and so colourful. And there’s much more to enjoy in this show. It makes you proud – it really does. end of the line … Logan (Jackman) is at death’s door.

lllll Seventeen years after his breakthrough perfor-mance in X-Men, the time has finally come for Hugh Jackman to part ways with the tortured mutant. The challenge for Jackman and director James Mangold was to find a way to say goodbye to Wolverine that pleases fans, satisfies investors and preserves the actor’s legacy. It’s a lot for a film to carry. Logan wobbles, at times, under the weight of such responsibility. Jackman was 30 when cast as Wolverine (after Russell Crowe turned it down). In the first two spin-off films, Jackman literally fleshed out the character, sculpting his body with a regimen that took him as close to superhuman as any mortal can get. He couldn’t take the character any further down that route. So the filmmakers shift tack, embracing every one of the actor’s 48 years and then some. Logan is no longer the animal-sharp adversary he once was. He really does look as though he has spent the past two decades defending his very right to exist. The screenwriters further up the ante by suggesting that Logan is seriously ill. (Those adamantium claws are slowly poisoning his body.) He self-medicates with alcohol. How low can you go? When Logan opens, he’s sick in body and soul. Superhero flicks have been getting darker and darker, but in the third Wolverine film, the Marvel anti-hero really is at the end of the road. Hiding out on the Mexican border with the ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart), whom he has imprisoned “for his own good” in a rusted out water tank, Logan is eking out a pitiful existence as a chauffeur for hire, ferrying drunken bucks and hens around Las Vegas. Xavier may or may not be suffering from Alzheimer’s – he is so muddled by the medication Logan is administering to shut down his potentially disastrous telepathic powers, it’s not clear whether or not the mutant nonagenarian is losing the plot. Redemption comes in the shape of a mute young girl (Dafne Keen). Laura’s origins are hazy, but she and Wolverine are two of a kind – working in tandem, they’re a superhuman slaughterhouse. Ageing and mortality are interesting subjects for a Marvel movie, and the flicker of hope Logan offers is so fragile, it’s hard to believe it won’t be snuffed out.

Undercroft morphs into main attraction

xtending their Ashgrove cottage became a matter of urgency the day Brett and Dee Webber became parents. Until then, they had appreciated the scale and charm of their tiny 19th century home, accepting the fact that downstairs was largely inaccessible. But living with a baby in the confines of a snug bedroom, living room and kitchen changed everything. With a tight budget and a loose set of ideas, they approached architects Lachlan Nielsen and Morgan Jenkins to find a way to create more space and satisfy their desire to feel more connected to their back garden. The slope of the site, with Ithaca Creek at the back of the yard, led to the idea to build under the house. The design challenge was the lack of natural daylight due to the property’s southern orientation and densely vegetated surrounds. “When we first visited the site (and went downstairs), Brett was there with a torch saying, ‘Are you sure? Are you sure it won’t be too dark?’,” Lachlan says. “It was so small inside and so dark underneath but we thought, let’s dig out the undercroft because the back yard is so beautiful.” Lachlan and Morgan focused on finding clever ways to introduce natural light and minimise floor area so as not to overwhelm the scale of the original house. “We were keen to see how tight we could make it,” Lachlan says. “What we liked were the little spaces. We knew it would be odd to come from small spaces into something

massive – that would be totally jarring. Downstairs feels cosy and it’s the right scale.” “We designed the new part as an extension of the (original) gable roof,” Morgan says. “We basically stretched the roof across and linked the (old and new) gutters.” Below the new gabled roof, a staircase connects upper and lower floors. The resulting double-height space lets in light and air through new louvred windows and a skylight. From the bottom of the staircase, the openplan dining and living room extends to the garden. Beside it, a new kitchen connects to a barbecue terrace outside. A second skylight two storeys above the kitchen bench lets in sunlight to illuminate the once dim interior. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors reveal the garden. “We wanted to get little landscape areas close to the living areas,” Lachlan says. “It is designed so you can always see landscape as you move around the house.” For most of the year, the new undercroft remains open, with natural ventilation and the thermal mass of the concrete floor maintaining a comfortable temperature. “In winter it gets a bit cool but that’s our opportunity to light the fireplace,” Brett says. “With the fire going it warms the whole house, including the (terrace) outside. Even on cool nights we can sit out there for dinner or drinks.” The back of the block is private with creek views, while protruding side walls act like blinkers to screen open windows. The design blends Dee’s love of white and Brett’s love of black with extensive use of timber and the green outlook. “This house feels massive for us now,” Brett says. “The beautiful thing is that we always feel we’re outside but we don’t have to have our shoes on.”

Most plans fall into place this week, especially if travel is on the agenda. But if you’ve been a tad solitary lately, you’ll be pleased to know that others don’t begrudge you some quality personal time. Make the most of it while you can.

PISCES
The week brings the full spectrum of emotions and perhaps some conflict. But you’re not entirely innocent. You can’t treat love as a battleground. Take care that past struggles don’t spill into present relationships. Live for the day.

With the cosmos offering Ariens a triad of wealth, pleasure and opportunity, you’d be forgiven for believing in magic. Here’s your chance to make a dream come true. So take every opportunity to be in someone’s direct line of vision.
As one phase of your life ends, you trade what’s worn out for something different. Romantically, you’re on hot new hunting grounds. Financially, you’re not. While the wolf isn’t yet at the door, the bills soon will be, so budget accordingly.
You’ve been patient enough, Libra. Others have had all the time in the world to resolve their issues but they’re dragging their heels. Problem is, they continue to rely on you. Break away and get on with your own business.
Life suddenly becomes happier. If you can’t see signs of this, you may still be recovering from recent tensions. The planets now put all their energy into helping you fix any problems. The eventual outcome is genuine joy.
GEMINI
SAGITTARIUS
(May 21 – June 21)
(November 23 – December 21)
There’s a change of mood, Gemini. Instead of hurtling along at breakneck speed, your enthusiasm gives way to a more meditative pace. Sometimes you need to slow down for a safe journey. Still, it needn’t be a lonely excursion.
You loathe deception, so if you feel someone’s acting suspiciously, you’ll investigate. Just don’t pry needlessly or you might end up creating unnecessary trouble. You can’t know everything, and some matters really aren’t your concern.
CANCER
CAPRICORN
(June 22 – July 22)
(December 22 – January 20)
You might be noticing a marked increase on your “can-do” list. This could be some higher spiritual element creeping in. Whatever’s happening, you’re tapping into something extraordinary. Use all blessings to your advantage.
If you’ve taken a professional leap of faith lately, your courage should soon show results. The same can be said for affairs of the heart. You’re a marketable item, Capricorn, so go sell yourself to your target audience. Late nights are likely.
LEO
AQUARIUS
(July 23 – August 23)
(January 21 – February 18)
There’s every chance of this week suffering a truth famine. A wise Leo might want to check whether they’re being fed fact or fiction. Of course, there’s always the chance you didn’t hear the full story. Check your sources.
This isn’t an ordinary week. You could receive unexpected calls. Travel’s likely, with the chance to retrain. You are more ambitious, with a growing awareness of your talents. In doing so, unhappy conditions are no longer tolerated.

Natural decor Bring the outside into your home with the natural beauty of timber floors
T
imber flooring, available in many product types, can be laid over a variety of surfaces from timber board products to concrete slabs to create a warm, contemporary look. This makes timber flooring ideal for renovation work as well as new homes and, with the product range now available, there is a timber floor suited to almost every home owner. Australasian Timber Flooring Association technical manager David Hayward says traditional solid timber flooring is often chosen and is available in many Australian species from different parts of the country or species from overseas. “Australian species include spotted gum and blackbutt from the central east coast, Tasmanian oak and Victorian ash from the southern eastern states or jarrah from the west,” David says. “These species provide some of the best flooring timbers in the world and can be laid on most substrates.
“Their natural beauty, adding both warmth and elegance, has made them the feature of many Australian homes.” Bamboo and laminate flooring can also provide a striking look. “Bamboo is a grass, and strand woven products are manufactured by bonding bamboo strands together and creating a range of attractive flooring products, some with textured and coloured surfaces,” David says. “Laminate flooring is a little different as it has a core layer of fibreboard and an attractive decor paper with images of timber flooring on the exposed surface. “Textured surfaces and a range of gloss levels provide for an attractive floor that is also very hard wearing. “The reality is that no matter what you choose, a stunning appearance can be achieved to bring your home one step closer to nature with the beauty and elegance a timber floor offers.”

Improve the quality of your tank water!
A family-owned business operating in Queensland since 1995, Leaf Shield Gutter Protection installs quality gutter guards to suit most roof types, with its system designed to fit over any roof or gutter. Owner Sherrie Blundell says installing Leaf Shield’s gutter guard removes the hassle and danger of home owners cleaning their gutters. “We install a range of meshes, including fire-
rated aluminium, stainless steel, and our heavy duty polyethylene product is engineered to suit Australia’s harsh conditions,” Sherrie says. “Leaf Shield gutter meshes prevent leaves from building up and blocking gutters, stop birds and vermin entering your roof cavities, and keep fine leaves like pine needles out.” Call the team for a free measure and quote.

Cosmopolitan Shutters Shutters are the ultimate window covering that can be used inside and outside the home to offer privacy, control light and block out the summer heat as well as being energy efficient, says sales administrator at Cosmopolitan Shutters, Belinda Wolfe. “Whether you are building a new home or replacing existing window coverings, you won’t find a window treatment that looks better, lasts longer and insulates more efficiently than our internal Thermoshield Shutters,” Belinda says. “The shutters come in a range of
colours and carry a lifetime warranty. They are made from a 100 per cent poly-resin material that looks and feels like wood, never needs painting and will not fade, crack, peel or chip.” For outside areas, the company recommends the Louvreshield range of aluminum shutters, which Belinda says are hard wearing, easy to clean and can be custom made to suit decks, patios and balconies.
