hoose a job you love, and never work a day in your life. This quote is invariably attributed to ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, or a Princeton academic (according to the US university), or a series of 1980s self-help gurus. Regardless, it’s good advice Caroline McCulloch (P12), owner of the Frankie4 shoe company, seems to have embraced. She loves helping people to live more comfortably, and this passion, in turn, has helped her company become a local success story. Phil Brown writes that passion, this time for the arts by philanthropists, has bolstered UQ’s extensive collection (P28) on rotation in their gallery. (Phil also reveals his penchant for a classic scent, P10, inspired by memories of beloved relatives). And love, this time for a father, has provided inspiration for actor Jessica Tovey (P5). So, what’s your passion? What do you love doing? And are you doing it?

For Jessica Tovey, whose father is a research scientist, playing a quantum physicist in her latest play might just be the perfect role. Jessica spent many childhood hours pottering around her associate professor father Euan Tovey’s University of Sydney lab, often participating as a guinea pig in tests in his work as a world specialist in allergy medicine. “My dad certainly filled me with a love of science and curiosity. I would do experiments and hang out at the lab at Sydney University watching him do tests on things,’’ she says. “It was a great place to play as a kid with all the potions and test tubes. It sparked my imagination.’’ Jessica feels she is honouring her father’s work by playing the outgoing and witty scientist Marianne in the Queensland Theatre’s production of Constellations. “I’ve spent the last six months watching documentaries and my father has sent me articles, so it’s been a lovely bonding experience.” Jessica, 29, of Sydney, says Constellations is a classic boy meets girl romance with a twist. Marianne meets quietly spoken beekeeper Roland at a barbecue and love sparks. But British playwright Nick Payne uses the framework of a multi-universe so there are several outcomes played out in Marianne and Roland’s love story. “Nick sees the same scene in several different ways. They have their first date but they potentially could have a disastrous fight, or in one universe he is married or she is married or someone says inappropriate things. You get to see one moment in two people’s lives played out several times – some end well and some end disastrously. The play is beautifully crafted and offers a lovely insight into behaviour.’’ Jessica feels privileged to play the role of the fiercely intelligent and career-driven Marianne which has been coveted by actors around the world, including Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins and Golden Globe winner Ruth Wilson. “Marianne is reactionary and the filter from her brain and mouth can be faulty at times. Roland is opposite to Marianne in many ways. He is more introverted and sees the tiny things in life. Lucas (Stibbard) is incredibly talented and when you stand on stage with only one other person, you have to trust that I’ve tricked person, and I know with Lucas I’m in safe hands.’’ the adult world Jessica, whose mother is author Libby Gleeson, knew and I’m getting she wanted to act from the age of six. She secured a role paid to have on Home and Away when she was still in high school and fun with what has worked in television, films including Tracks (2013) I do opposite Adam Driver and Mia Wasikowska, and theatre. “Plays are called plays for a reason because they are a great joy to perform. I’ve tricked the adult world and I’m getting paid to have fun with what I do. It is one of the great joys of acting. Every time you get a new role, you become a new person.’’ Fiona Purdon Queensland Theatre’s CONSTELLATIONS, until Apr 9, $35-

WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU?
“AHA” MOMENT?
I’m bringing my new show Stripnosis to the Powerhouse as part of the Brisbane Comedy Festival. It’s not a cheesy hypnosis show – it’s an R-rated hypnosis show for over-18s. It’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on. The show is different every night because it hangs on volunteers (we don’t force anyone to get up on stage).
I think when I read all the social media messages people sent me requesting me to do more adult stuff after the Sexpo shows. It was just great knowing that I was on to a winning formula.
HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT?
Photograph • Richard Walker
I’ve been performing for 25 years. I’ve studied clinical hypnotherapy and been doing comedy hypnosis shows for almost 10 years. Three years ago I did a show for Sexpo. It was so successful that I planned this one-hour naughty hypnosis show.
WHEN OR WHERE ARE YOU HAPPIEST?
On stage hearing people laugh and at home with the family. It’s good to have that yin and yang balance with life. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BRISBANE?
I love the innocence of Brisbane. Everyone is so super friendly. They don’t have any inhibitions, which makes them perfect candidates for hypnosis.
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
Any comedy show that makes me laugh.
Stripnosis at the Powerhouse is the world premiere of this naughty hypnosis show. I’m hoping there will be more shows in the future.
YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?
I’ve been Queensland Entertainer of the Year twice and Sight Act of the Year six times. I was also the first Australian to win a Merlin Award. Awards are not my motivation but it’s nice to be recognised.

Old Spice is another sentimental favourite. My father used to use it and I still do sometimes as it brings back memories of him. He’s long dead but slapping on the Old Spice, I can see him emerging from his bedroom with that smell wafting on the air. My favourite uncle, Cyril, also had a signature cologne. In his case, it was English Blazer, which I use intermittently, even now. And luckily they still make these products. When I would visit my uncle in Singapore or Hong Kong where he lived for many years after we had moved back to Australia, he would plaster English Blazer on liberally. And when I smell it now, there he is, with his comb-over, his too-short shorts, the body shirt to show off his physique (he was a black
belt in taekwondo), ponging of English Blazer. For me, my mum’s signature fragrance was 4711 Eau De Cologne. Remember that? They still make it in those cool little bottles. That smell pervaded my parents’ bedroom when we lived in Hong Kong in the 1960s. Not that I was in my parents’ bedroom that often. My forays into it were mainly when they were out because I knew my father had a stash of Playboy magazines in his bedside table and, well, I was 12 and curious. You will have your own olfactory memories, of course – maybe some cologne or perfume, the smell of shepherd’s pie or a favourite cake your mum used to make. But please excuse me now because I have to go and splash on some more Brut. Classy, huh?

ethic, adaptability and resilience have taught me a lot of skills in managing my own business hurdles.” The idea of a career in footcare came to Caroline in Year 10, when she suffered terrible shin pain from sport. She was so grateful to the podiatrist who treated her, she knew she wanted to pursue podiatry or physio. “I was blown away,” she says. “It’s incredible the difference you can make to someone’s knees, shins, ankles and feet by changing their foot biomechanics; whether it be with footwear or orthotics or both. It’s incredibly rewarding.” Caroline says her team at work – including Alan whom she “couldn’t do this without … wouldn’t want to do this without” – is “absolutely crucial to our achievements to date and any future success”. FRANKiE4 has more than 60 stockists across Australia and New Zealand, and a growing online presence. Its first concept store opened last year, at Indooroopilly, and a second has opened at Windsor. The label’s winter range is out this month, with 22 styles ranging from supportive leather ankle books to metallic sneakers and heels. None of it would be possible without help. “And lots of it,” Caroline says. “I quit the guilt and I embrace all the help I need to stay calm and happy while I keep these balls in the air. I live on a street that has four girls who regularly babysit, and I have a cleaner who comes once a week to clean and do the ironing.” The business has come a long way since the couple placed that first order for 200 pairs from a factory in Sydney. The following year they found a specialist factory in China, which produces technical shoes ethically, and placed an order for 5000 pairs. “I was pregnant at the time, and had morning sickness, and when they told us the minimum order and Alan said ‘no worries’, I threw up in my mouth,” she says. The punt paid off, despite a business adviser telling Caroline FRANKiE4 was “unviable”. “He told me that if I continued investing in FRANKIE4 we would be so broke I would have to sell my son’s high chair,” Caroline says. “I felt stupid and embarrassed that I had veered away from treating patients to do

something that I was now worried put my family at such financial risk. We were operating at a loss and continued to tip more money from our podiatry business into what was then an unprofitable footwear label.” But she says Alan told her not to lose hope – he had absolute faith in the venture. “He kept telling me to focus on the positive feedback our patients were giving us,” she says. “Though the meeting with that (adviser) felt like the worst day of my life, I am so grateful it happened – I know I have a long way to go still, but our achievements to date I credit to that meeting instilling a sense of fear in me. “If harnessed, fear is good, it helps you make good decisions, and at the same time it keeps you grounded and on your toes,” Caroline says. “I can confidently say, at this stage, Max’s high chair is safe.” For more visit frankie4.com.au

BREAST IMAGING: WHY QUALITY MATTERS “Did you know that approximately 1 in 8 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime?“ “I know I need a mammogram but does it really matter where you go? I thought all mammograms are the same?” No – breast imaging is a subspecialty in radiology and some mammograms are better than others. difw has been the private breast imaging provider of choice in Brisbane since 1998, under the care of Dr Paula Sivyer, our founding radiologist. Dr Sivyer’s reputation in breast imaging is unsurpassed in Queensland and she has trained a team of dedicated imaging professionals who share her passion for providing breast imaging that is a cut above the industry standard. Our better breast imaging experience includes: • no waiting list • same day results • 3D mammography available • all referrals accepted • ave appointment time 1.5 to 2 hours (imaging only, assumes no biopsy).
We compare imaging year after year, thanks to our large digital data archive, so you know the subtlest changes in breast tissue are logged and assessed. We provide results on the day, so you don’t have to worry.
Olympians Steven Bradbury and Susie O’Neill warmed up a 200-strong crowd at Cloudland, Fortitude Valley for the launch of this year’s Chain Reaction Challenge. Guests from Brisbane’s business and cycling communities included some of the 46 Queensland cyclists who aim to ride more than 1000km to raise $1 million for children’s charities including the AEIOU Foundation for children with autism, and Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland. Executives will ride a different course each day, from Sydney on April 29 to Brisbane on May 5. The Cloudland event alone raised $35,000. PhotographS • Patria Jannides

Boost wellness with a dose of nature Step outside and let wonders of the world lift your spirits
F
rom tending to the garden, to enjoying a yoga session outdoors, to reading under a shady tree, being out in nature is one of the simplest ways to beat stress and enhance wellbeing. Countless studies have proven that spending time outside is good for the soul, with initiatives like Work with Nature week, which starts on Monday, calling for people to let a little more of the outdoors into their busy lives. Rich Gilmore, director of The Nature Conservatory (TNC) Australia says Work with Nature week encourages people to swap their desks for the great outdoors by working outside for an hour, at their nearest park, green space or outdoor area. “While Aussies are traditionally ‘outdoorsy’, often the pressures of work and life mean they’re now spending a scary amount of time indoors,” Rich says. “It’s often difficult to balance our home and work lives, so it can be hard to make the time to get outside and enjoy our wonderful country.” Research shows that spending time outside reduces stress, improves creativity and productivity, and restores mental energy. Deakin University’s Health, Nature and Sustainability Research Group’s associate researcher Dr Rona Weerasuriya also encourages people to get out among the greenery.
YOUR UNIQUE BROWS
“Nature allows the opportunity for people to experience relaxation, rejuvenation, improved affective states and connect with people, among a host of other health and wellbeing benefits,” Rona says. “Simply escaping out into nature provides the freedom, relaxation and physical activity, which is needed and known to have a positive impact on mental states such as anxiety and depression.” Research conducted by a Melbourne University team has found taking “green booster breaks” throughout the working day can give our mind the rest it needs, with researcher Dr Kate Lee saying natural views improve attentiveness for fatigued workers. “We have shown the unique properties of natural views boost concentration to top up energy reserves so tasks feel less effortful,” Kate says. “This means employees may feel and perform better at work. “Research also suggests that workplace greenery provides an enriching experience that helps employees feel more engaged at work.” To get involved with Work with Nature week, and be in with a chance to win a $1000 travel voucher, visit workwithnature.org.au for more information hannah mcDonald

Hanks Optometrists by George & Matilda Eyecare Optometrist Joseph Macarrone of Hanks Optometrists by George & Matilda Eyecare at Ascot says people often think that optometrists only prescribe to correct poor vision. “But, increasingly we are using our knowledge to help people avoid vision problems all together,” Joseph says. “Regularly eating spinach and kale may help to protect you from the most common form of glaucoma. The reason these foods offer such protection is because they contain dietary
nitrate that is believed to help blood flow to the optic nerve. We already know that leafy greens are also one of the dietary recommendations for reducing the risks of macular degeneration, so it’s a good idea for you to talk to your optometrist about the lifestyle advice that is best for you and your situation.” Joseph says that as well as reducing risks, everybody over 40 should have a glaucoma test every two years. “It’s just part of looking after yourself,” he says.

Roll on up
T
he ubiquitous and therefore seemingly simple rice paper roll can be tricky to prepare. The filling is a great way to use up leftovers, with prawns, pork belly and cooked chicken with lettuce, carrot, onion and rice vermicelli noodles the usual ingredients. The hack is not to oversoak the rice paper. Use lukewarm water and remove when the paper has the texture of an anorak. It may feel too soon but be confident, as it will continue to soften. If this all seems complicated, leave the work to your visitors. Present the ingredients on platters and your guests can make their own.
Moreton Bay bug, avocado and quinoa rice paper rolls ½ cup black quinoa 2 green shallots, finely sliced 30g pistachios, coarsely chopped 2 green chillies, seeded and finely chopped 100g green beans, trimmed and finely sliced 12 rice paper sheets 2 large cooked Moreton Bay bugs, shelled and meat sliced into 12 pieces 2 avocados, sliced lengthways 1 small bunch coriander, leaves picked
1 small bunch mint, leaves picked 50g snow pea sprouts Dipping sauce 1½tbs fish sauce 1½tbs rice wine vinegar 1tbs caster sugar 3tbs water 1 clove garlic, very finely chopped 1 red chilli, seeded and finely chopped 1tbs lime juice
Photograph • Ric Frearson Styling • Kara Hynes
Cover quinoa with 375ml of water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 10 mins or until tender, rinse under cold water, then drain well and place into a bowl. Add shallots, pistachio, chilli and beans. Next, fill a large bowl with lukewarm water and dip a rice paper sheet into the water until it slightly softens. Place sheet on a clean board, add 2tbs of the quinoa mixture, followed by a piece of bug, a slice of avocado, some fresh herbs and a few snow pea sprouts. Fold over one side of the rice paper – this will form the bottom. Roll up firmly from one side, leaving the top open. Repeat process and serve with dipping sauce. Dipping sauce: Place the fish sauce, vinegar, sugar and water in a small pot over high heat. Stir to dissolve the sugar. When almost at the boil, remove from the heat and allow to cool completely, then stir in garlic, chilli and lime juice. Serves 4. Alastair McLeod is the chef-owner of Al’FreshCo. alfreshco.com.au

fast-food burger joint is a little out of my jurisdiction, but when it’s fast food with Neil Perry lurking somewhere behind it, I find it hard to resist. Can the man with the ponytail weave enough magic to make the difference between a golden arch and his place appreciable? We’ll see … Burger Project is a chain, with six in Sydney, two in Melbourne and one in Brisbane with plans for another CBD venue here in the next year. The ethos is one of quality ingredients; not quite espousing lean (it’s burgers and chips), but sourced from the likes of Cape Grim and Lilydale. It has smart, contemporary styling, and you place your order at the counter, take a buzzer and wait. You need the buzzer because the preparation time at Burger Project (19 minutes in my case) would cause outrage at those places where you simply stand and wait. Here you can take a seat and relax. Nine beef burgers ($8.90-$13.90), three chicken katsu ($10.50$12.90) and one mushroom ($10.50) are offered, plus chips (the only side, $3.50/$5.50 ), five desserts, shakes, sodas, iced tea, house white and red (both made by Jeffrey Grosset) and three beers. What separates the Burger Project American cheese burger ($9.90, inset) from all the others in town? Chasms, kilometres, light-years if you only consider the big two, but if you throw in some of our hipster burger joints … not a great deal. But there are a few things that count, such as the patty: roughdiced beef, hand-moulded into a plump round so that rather than a grey, dry-inside, soulless beef patty, you bite into something that’s well-grilled on the surface, but moist, beefy and textural in the middle. Mine arrived pink in the centre – I love that, although many will swoon at the sight of rare mince. It’s 36-month Cape Grim, so has plenty of flavour. The “secret sauce” provides a salty, tangy, big burst. And the buns … soft, fresh, toasted just enough. It’s a hard burger to eat neatly – two sauces plus melted cheese means plenty of burger dribbling down your arms. But who cares … it’s delicious. As is the katsu burger – it has a solid, juicy fillet. And the chips are just as good – not anemic, thin, soggy fries but properly seasoned and cooked. Being a wine nerd I was intrigued by the Jeffrey Grosset association, and also made note of the other suppliers – Valrhona for chocolate, Simon Johnson, Nadur Gardens (lettuce), Murray River salt: – they’re all top notch, and expensive. I can find equally good burgers in one or two places in Brisbane, but for a “fast food” franchise, these are off the charts.

VIRGO
(February 19 – March 20)
(August 24 – September 22)
Success is possible, Pisces. You’re inspired, so you have plenty of ideas. Next, you have a truckload of energy to put to good use. More importantly, you’re a true die-hard. Anyone else would have given up by now.
Some Virgos could find it difficult to balance their emotions this week. A lack of confidence could also cause you to defer important decisions. Health may not be strong. If so, don’t multi-task. Haste will definitely make waste.
ARIES
LIBRA
(March 21 – April 20)
(September 23 – October 23)
Your mind is racing, heart pounding and you’re set for change. You finally realise how truly amazing you are. There’s a special spirit in all of us that some suppress. But you’re now given planetary permission to shine, so do just that.
You give and give, often at the expense of your well-being. This week step away from those who expect you to do all the heavy lifting. Focus on you. It’s amazing what you can learn by carefully and quietly analysing your deepest desires.
TAURUS
SCORPIO
(April 21 – May 20)
(October 24 – November 22)
Forget your usual caution – your need for fun is on par with any of the more fiery signs. This means non-stop action and long held plans may be detoured by a surprise. Stay flexible for unexpected events, especially the loving kind.
Intense emotions either strengthen relationships or bring confrontation. Perhaps it’s time to cast your line in different waters, either personal or professional. The upside is finances flow more freely – comfort shop, perhaps?
GEMINI
SAGITTARIUS
(May 21 – June 21)
(November 23 – December 21)
It might be difficult to stay objective, but that’s what the planets ask. Don’t carry your own prejudices into the debate, and the week should end happy. Everyone’s value’s are different, and others have a right to their own opinions.
Profits seem to be on the rise and we all know that luxury-loving Sagittarians are happier when financially secure. What’s more, you’re blessed with a knack for generating great deals. For now, your instincts are right on the money.
CANCER
CAPRICORN
(June 22 – July 22)
(December 22 – January 20)
During this week, life may feel overwhelming. You may be unsure of what steps to take. You may be unsure about what just happened. Believe in who you truly are, to trust your heart and know that you are on the right path.
You’re tired and ready to call time-out. Despite exhaustion, stay focused for just a few more days. With all the madness currently surrounding our planet, someone has to stay in control. Like it or not, for now you’re cosmic custodian.
LEO
AQUARIUS
(July 23 – August 23)
Recent difficulties are behind you. You’re one of the most playful of the signs, so rediscover laughter. When in form, few can match Leo optimism. Late week could bring a new work chapter and some well-deserved rewards.
(January 21 – February 18)
Expect guarded progress. While your love life’s on the improve, there are still loose ends that need tidying. Areas of caution include friendships, and stress. This week is all about your ability to support, without judgment.

risbane musical theatre star Georgina Hopson has yet to officially perform the lead role of Eliza Doolittle on stage in My Fair Lady, but she has already had plenty of practice runs – all in her own living room. Georgina, 26, of Auchenflower, won a coveted ensemble role in the star-studded production directed by Julie Andrews that opened this week at QPAC. Julie also chose her as understudy for Anna O’Byrne who stars as Eliza, a poor cockney flower girl who receives elocution lessons from Professor Henry Higgins (Downton Abbey star Charles Edwards). “You have to be prepared at any moment so I’m always practising the words and songs, so it is etched deep in my muscle memory. It’s a bit of a one-woman show in my living room,’’ she laughs. “It’s great to be performing in Brisbane, on home turf.’’ Her many ensemble roles include a dirt-smeared cockney vegetable seller and a rich lady at a sumptuous ball. She wears an eye-catching black and white outfit with a huge black hat for the Ascot races, which is her favourite scene and costume. “My costume is so divine; the scene is like a costume parade.” Georgina feels lucky to be part of this My Fair Lady production, especially after having fought so hard simply to get an audition. She grew up mesmerised by the performances of her childhood hero Julie Andrews in films such as Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, so she admits to being a little Julie overwhelmed when she discovered her idol would be Andrews at the auditions. Fortunately, Georgina had time to taught us (the ring her mentor, the Queensland Conservatorium of cast) what it is Music’s John Peek, who helped erase her nervousness. to be a true “I never felt better in an audition. I was calm and professional really responded to Julie’s warmth and generosity. She (Julie) looked majestic and beautiful. She was so encouraging and friendly. She even knew my name and said I had a beautiful choice of song. Julie Andrews taught us (the cast) what it is to be a true professional, how to love this business and how to behave: to be gracious and to show integrity and humility. She is 81 years old and she’s an absolute trooper.’’ Georgina, who grew up in Toowoomba, did not have her first singing lesson until she was 16. The budding actor had lessons to help with her audition for the school musical Oklahoma. “The singing lessons changed my life because I had no idea I could sing.” Georgina moved to Brisbane and studied speech pathology and then business but continued to sing as a hobby. After appearing in an amateur musical, she decided to audition for the Queensland Conservatorium of Music six years ago. “I worked so hard at university. I basically lived there, because I knew I had a lot of catching up and I had a hunger for learning.”

ART OF GIVING … Jon Molvig’s Joy Roggenkamp; Forward to victory

T
he generosity of philanthropists is vital to any institution building an art collection. The University of Queensland’s collection of more than 3700 works consists of many pieces that were donated to the institution. Philanthropists and Collections, now showing at the UQ Art Museum, is a fascinating glimpse into the UQ collection and the people who helped make it happen. Curator Samantha Littley has had the pleasure of digging into that collection to build a show which includes works from the colonial to the modern era. There are some real treats here and Samantha says it was a joy to discover little surprises along the way, such as Margaret Preston’s exquisite Native flowers, a hand-coloured woodcut on paper from around 1935, gifted to UQ in 1945 by Mary Corkery, who, we discover, was a pioneering art dealer in Brisbane during the 1940s. She apparently organised exhibitions by Margaret Olley, Vida Lahey and Albert Namatjira in Brisbane and Sydney. It’s a gorgeous piece but there’s only so much room available to hang things, so it has been tucked away behind the scenes for a while. Lovely to see it out again to be enjoyed by all of us. Margaret is, after all, one of our most loved Australian artists. Another treat is a rather sumptuous portrait by Jon Molvig, an artist so influential in establishing a contemporary art scene in Brisbane. Joy Roggenkamp, painted in 1963, is a portrait of a fellow artist and was entered in the Archibald Prize, but as Samantha explains, it didn’t win.
GIFT WRAP
Celebrating the generous donors to UQ’s extensive collection “Robert Hughes said it was the best painting that year,” Samantha says. The lovely thing about seeing this painting out again is that on a mannequin nearby is the very dress that features in the portrait, donated by Joy Roggenkamp’s widower, Ross McCowan, in 2010. He offered the painting for sale and it was purchased through the generosity of the Alumni Friends of University of Queensland Inc and Veronika Butta, with Ross donating related sketches and that marvellous dress. In explaining his decision to offer the work to UQ, Ross wrote that he “always promised Joy that I would get her portrait into a major gallery … I made the same promise to Jon Molvig”. Nice that he could deliver on both. Another favourite of mine is Elaine Haxton’s exquisite Flower Bridge at Kwei-Lin, done about 1956 – a piece in pen and brush with coloured inks and washes, gouache and pastel. It was a gift of Dr James Taylor Duhig though the Alumni Association.
Robert Jacks’ 1998 watercolour Woman walking with cello is a ripper and was donated by Brisbane architect Michael Rayner through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts program. In 2014 Michael, a keen art collector over many years, donated 90 artworks to UQ. He has been an adjunct professor in architecture at UQ since 2000 and says his generous donation was a way of “reinforcing my sense of belonging”. At the time, Michael said he hoped UQ would put some of the artworks “into curated shows with other artworks by similar artists or within cohesive themes”. Done. There are many other works of note … a wonderful Sidney Nolan work entitled African Montage and a cracking David Rankin, an expansive painting entitled Durras, done in 1973. There are works by Lloyd Rees, Betty Churcher (when she was Betty Cameron), Norman Lindsay, John Passmore and many more. Samantha has taken a broad-brush approach. She says it is important to honour donors and to learn what motivates them. “We discovered many fascinating stories that have enriched the records that we hold,” Samantha says. Those stories are displayed as part of the exhibition, making it an entertaining glimpse into one of our most significant collections. ILLEGAL COUPLING … Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as the Lovings.
Loving
A Few Less Men
lllll
lllll
Ruth Negga was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as a black Virginian woman who illegally marries a white man, and spends the next 10 years suffering the consequences. Australian Joel Edgerton, exotically blonded for the role of her husband, got a nod from the Golden Globes but failed to make the Academy Awards cut. Some say he was robbed. But Loving is not an Academy Awards-style film. In adapting the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter) has made a film almost as unassuming as the couple upon which it is based. The Lovings – you couldn’t have made that name up – are ordinary, working class folk. They are not particularly articulate. And they sure didn’t set out to change the world. They’d prefer to avoid the spotlight – especially after they are arrested in 1958 for interracial marriage. She’s a family-focused country girl. He’s a bricklayer who hots up drag-racing cars in his spare time. But you only have to take one look at Lola Loving (Sharon Blackwood), his enduring midwife mother, to understand that Richard is made of stern and solid material. Proud, stubborn and very clear on the line between wrong and right, he travels all the way to Washington DC to marry his pregnant girlfriend. Authorities might have turned a blind eye to their cohabitation, but declaring the union legitimate is another matter entirely. The Lovings are hauled out of bed in the middle of the night and arrested. They escape a hefty jail sentence on the proviso that they immediately leave the state. They are banned from returning for the next 25 years. The displaced family struggles to survive in the city – where two more children are born. They yearn for the open spaces of the country in which they grew up and the company of the people they love. Watching civil rights marches on television and galvanised by the speeches of Martin Luther King, Mildred writes a letter to Senator Robert Kennedy. He refers their case to the American Civil Liberties Union. The motivations of the people who help the Lovings are somewhat ambiguous – particularly the self-serving lawyer played by Nick Kroll and Michael Shannon’s Life magazine reporter. But they get their day in court.
Dean Craig made a name for himself with Death at a Funeral (2007), a black comedy populated by British eccentrics. It was such a success that the Americans remade it three years later with Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. A Few Less Men is the latest, ocker iteration. A decade on, the jokes are really starting to decompose. It is a sequel, of sorts, to A Few Best Men (2011) and three of the original cast members (Xavier Samuel, Kris Marshall, Kevin Bishop) are back to reprise their respective roles – as the straight man, the skirt-chaser and the buffoon. The film takes up where its predecessor left off. David Locking (Samuel) has barely had the chance to exchange vows with his long-suffering Australian fiancee Mia (Laura Brent) at their eventful Blue Mountains garden wedding when his drunken mate Luke (played by Tim Draxl in the original film) falls off the edge of a cliff. The accident curtails honeymoon plans: David feels duty-bound to chaperone Luke’s body back to England. Violent threats to his wellbeing made by Luke’s psychotic, gangster cousin (Ryan Corr) put paid to hesitation. When Graham (Bishop) accidentally crashes the private jet Mia’s father has loaned them, the three mates are stranded in the Australian Outback alone with a coffin. More remarkable than the lads’ ability to lose their dead mate on multiple occasions are the varied uses the local characters they encounter have for his inanimate flesh. But the laughs are few and far between.

n a corner block in Paddington Natalie Winter has been busy creating a little piece of St Barts. The glamorous Caribbean island famous for its pristine beaches, luxury yachts and designer boutiques has been a source of inspiration for the stylist and fashion and Society of Now travel blogger since moving into the classic Queenslander about six months ago. “I used to like more of a Scandi-feel and my previous pieces were mostly mid-century, but I’m moving away from that to a St Barts beach style which is much more relaxed,” she says. Previous stints in interior design have given Natalie an edge in decorating. “I see interiors independently to the home. “I like to find things that are earthy and natural with sophistication and I like the interiors to feel modern, but my look keeps changing from house to house.” Her favourite pieces include two teak and rattan Uniqwa Furniture occasional chairs and a teak root Sodwana stool/side table on the front verandah where Natalie and her husband Gerry often soak up the sunshine with their beagle Snoopy. “I’m drawn to things with texture that aren’t too manufactured, and certain colours and materials like white, black, naturals, wood and concrete,” she says. Other more sentimental items around the home include two 1960 Sculpted Viking

armchairs given to Gerry by his godmother and reupholstered to match the interiors. “We call them our ma and pa chairs,” Natalie says. An antique meat safe of New Zealand kauri wood that Natalie bought more than 20 years ago also takes pride of place in the lounge, storing wine and glassware. “I paid a lot of money for it back then and it fits into every house we’ve moved into.” The original radiogram in the lounge room was from a deceased estate. “I’d wanted one for a while and it was a bit of a find. It still works; we just have to get the needle fixed. It’s such a lovely piece and it really fits in.” One of Natalie’s favourite decorating tips is stacking books and magazines. “It humanises the home. Books to me are like art and they represent your personality a bit.” She also advises using a tray on table tops for small decorator items. “It contains things, it gives them I’m drawn a zone of their own, and it looks to things cleaner and more polished.” with texture Natalie also isn’t afraid to use that aren’t too fake flowers around the home, manufactured with life-like peonies brightening up her office. “I gave up on buying real flowers, especially in Queensland. It’s just too hot,” she says. The house is set for a major renovation this year. To give it the overhaul it deserves, Natalie and Gerry made the hard decision to sell their former Ascot home to free up money. “We love Paddington. It’s so hip and so alive, and there are so many beautiful restaurants and cafes and homes,” she says. The couple has renovated two other character homes, including a villa in Auckland and the 1930s Queenslander in Ascot. “We’ll be keeping as much of the existing and original features as possible. I love the history of Queenslanders, how beautiful and earthy they feel. They have a realness to them.” Natalie can’t wait to decorate the extra rooms in luxe beach style when they’re done.
