editor’s letter

I

nspired by this week’s fashion-focused issue and the stylish confidence of our local bloggers (P9), I dusted off my stack of old photo albums to chart my personal style over time. It was so much fun to look back. I found the picture of me at a 1980s school dance, wearing a black-and-white striped oversized sweatshirt teamed with a black tube skirt, black-and-white knee-high socks and penny loafers. (Rad.) Fast forward a decade, and for a wedding I’d kept the same colour scheme but this time it was for a skirt suit in an oversized houndstooth pattern, teamed with a black choker. (So fly.) As I type this, I’m in – you’ll never guess – black and white, albeit a wrap dress. (Awesome – kid-sized peanut butter crusted fingerprints wash right out.) As I flicked through the photos, it occurred to me that fashion changes because we change. What we choose to wear shouts to the world who we are, right now. And I realised those photographs are also a record of how I have evolved as a person. With my mind suitably blown, I thought: Does the same trick work for other photographs, say, of a city? Yep. Flicking through 23 years’ worth of Brisbane News magazines is like exploring a really, really big photo album charting this city’s evolution. And it shows, too, how the magazine has evolved over time – the inks, the paper, the font choices, the stories – reflecting readers’ needs at the date stamped on the cover. Soon – very soon – there’ll be another photograph to paste into this magazine’s evolutionary album. Stay tuned.

Chelsea De Luca • Jewellery designer

Her exquisite pieces adorn A-list celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Dannii Minogue and Beyonce, but Chelsea De Luca is not resting on her laurels. The Tarragindi-based designer has just launched her debut fashion range, and realised a long-held ambition at the same time. Inspiration for the “effortlessly luxe and comfortable’’ silk loungewear struck in June last year, and Chelsea quickly secured a London textile designer who meticulously translated her trademark art deco and vintage-style jewellery designs to fabric. The resulting Uno collection is a confection of sumptuous looks in emerald, claret and blush tones. “I researched art and history, and one of the pants I designed is inspired by original ‘palazzo’ 1930s beach pyjamas (see P6) which were designed for yachting,” she says. The first design was the bohemian-style Rosetta robe ($629, pictured), which can be worn about the house, or to lunch with jeans and loafers. “The collection is about embracing that lifestyle. Whether it is about cocktails or brunch, the pieces can be deconstructed or worn together,” she says. Since the label’s launch in 2004, the ride has been surreal – particularly the celebrity aspect. “We were contacted by Beyonce’s people to say she loved some of my pieces,” Chelsea says. “We didn’t think anything would happen but the next thing you see is that she is shopping in Nice and Paris and wearing my jewellery. We sold out of the neck piece Beyonce was wearing, 10 times over.” The celebrity world is far removed from the banana plantation in Tully, far north Queensland, where Chelsea grew up obsessed with fashion and jewellery. She remembers that her “great escape’’ as a boarder at Fairholme College in Toowoomba was poring over the fashion pages of Vogue, Dolly and Cleo – the very titles that have since featured her pieces. Chelsea sold her New Farm store a couple of years ago to focus on online and the US market, and now manages a team of between five and 10, depending on the season, plus five handpicked jewellery makers in Sydney. Throw in being a busy mum to four-year-old son Marcello and there is rarely a dull moment. “I have to be better at celebrating moments. There have been some great milestones but I’ve been too busy thinking about the next thing,’’ Chelsea says. “After all the sleepless nights, this is validation.’’ FIONA PURDON Photograph • Ric Frearson

All day long I listened to the songs being played on the radio as they were piped into my office. It was torture. Of all the silly pop songs, 1973 Lobo hit Me and You and a Dog Named Boo was the silliest. I mean, who the hell would call a dog Boo? Austin Roberts’ 1975 hit, Rocky, was another shocker. Remember that one, about a guy who meets a girl, they marry, have a baby, then she’s dead, all within three minutes.

Trouble is, I know the song’s lyrics and if I heard it on the radio tomorrow, I’d be able to sing along. There was an incident in my teen years when this ability to recollect songs was embarrassing. These tunes used to recur when I was surfing, as the rhythm of paddling out tended to encourage their recollection. Often I’d be sitting out the back singing a Bowie tune or something by John Lennon. But one day I found myself belting out a Helen Reddy song ... “I am woman, hear me roar,” I warbled. How wrong was that? And I assume it’s still there, embedded deep in my scone. Yikes.

Local fashion bloggers put their own spin on autumn-winter trends, Hannah Davies writes Curvy queen Stacey McGregor, 31, St Lucia As a plus-size model and fashion blogger, Stacey has turned finding figure-flattering pieces into an art form. “My best advice for styling curves? If you like it, wear it. If you feel comfortable and confident in it, you’ll look great,” says the office administrator, who models her colourful finds @stace_mcgregs on Instagram. “I find great pieces in a range of stores, even some which could be written off as ‘older lady stores’,” she says. “When you are heading to a change room, take the clothes you want to try then grab one wild card – a fun piece you wouldn’t normally try on – whether it’s a bold print, bright colour or a different style. You’ll be surprised how often the wild card becomes your take-home piece.”

YOUR FASHION HERO? Michelle Obama has amazing style. I also love to see what Adele is wearing, and Ashley Graham always looks so confident and stunning. FAVE LABELS? Camilla, Sacha Drake, Adrift,

and Seed Heritage. EARLIEST “FASHION” MEMORY? My mum

is the original scarf lady. As a young girl, I would drape myself in all the different colours and fabrics of scarves she had hanging from the wardrobe door. The scarves were always bright, patterned or floral – and I loved them.

Classic with a twist Sarah Merrett, 36, Hawthorne As a part-time personal stylist and full-time fashion fanatic, Sarah Merrett manages to look effortlessly stylish 24/7 – even while caring for two-year-old daughter Matilda. The wife of retired Brisbane Lions player Daniel also works three days a week as a teacher-librarian. Through her business (@ sarahmerrettstyling on Instagram), she helps women unlock their soulmate style. “My clients are people from 18 to 80. They can be people who have kids, or are going through menopause, or dealing with the struggles of being teenagers,” she says. “Style can play a huge part in someone’s wellbeing. It’s all about making someone feel good in their own skin.” DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE … Classic with a twist.

Sometimes I like to be super smart, other times grungy and other times bohemian. My style depends on my mood, the weather and the event. I’m a big denim addict. It’s so easy to layer a tee with a blazer or leather jacket. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT FASHION?

The ability it gives someone to share their personality with the world without even needing to speak, and the opportunity to play dress-ups on the weekend. FAVE new-season TRENDS? The flares are

amazing. These are not like the old-school flares but cropped and ruffled, so they look great with an ankle boot or mid-shin boot. There is a lot of black and classic styling,

which hides a multitude of sins. Fishnets are also back in a big way – they look great peeking out under jeans. WHAT CAN WE RECYCLE FROM THIS SEASON?

Keep the leather and denim. The pleated midi skirts are going to be around still, but there are some heavier fabric ones for the cooler weather. Also the high-waisted old-school Levi’s-style “mum jeans” that look great with a rock and roll tee and a blazer. PET PEEVES? I’m a little bit over the off-the-

shoulder trend. Also corsets. I like them on others, but if you’re super short through the body, this trend is not a good one. YOUR FASHION HEROes? I love Pip Edwards

and Kate Waterhouse – complete opposites, but I’m a bit of patchwork quilt when it comes to style. Sometimes I like sleek and clean, and other times relaxed vibes and messy hair. fave DESIGNERS? Gucci everything at the moment. And I adore Zimmermann for timeless pieces. JW Anderson, Chloe, Anine Bing and new Aussie jewellery designer Lucy Folk also get the blood pumping. EARLIEST FASHION MEMORY? Getting my

nanna to make me a rah-rah skirt like the one Dannii Minogue wore on the front cover of Smash Hits. I was about seven and she did a great job. I wore it with a singlet top with buttons down the front.

Street chic Aicha Robertson, 25, McDowall For one so young, Aicha has established a firm foothold in the fashion industry, working with top stylists and fashion commentators such as Brisbane News’ own Kimberly Gardner. The photogenic influencer also runs eco-fashion label The Great Beyond with designer Nicolas Azar, blogs at The Fashion Heist and maintains an Instagram account (@ thefashionheist) that attracts 47,000 followers. Amazingly, fashion wasn’t Aicha’s first choice as a career. She “kinda fell into it while studying journalism”, after bumping into Kimberly at an event. DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE ... Street eclectic. I like

picking classic styles but then adding a bit of edge to them. Not being too boring.

the whole velvet trend needs to be done in moderation, otherwise it just ends up looking a bit ’70s grunge. I think it could be nice to wear a velvet fitted jacket or a velvet camisole. Scanlan Theodore and Prada are doing a lot of that. FAVE DESIGNERS? Dion Lee, Celine and

Christopher Esber. YOUR FASHION HEROES? Mary-Kate and

Ashley Olsen. I like how they wear minimal pieces and oversized things. Their style is very trans-seasonal and effortless. EARLIEST “FASHION” MEMORY? My mum

dressing me in a leather trench coat, black beret, black flared pants and a turtle neck. I looked like a beatnik. My mum used to dress me in really fun, hilarious outfits and loved playing around with different clothes.

FAVE NEW-SEASON TRENDS? I’m excited for

next season. The look seems to be a strange ’70s-’90s blend. It’s always nice to see old trends come back in and to see what people do with them. Military styling and frayed denim are both coming back, and there is a lot of pastel pink about, which I’m loving because I’ve never worn it before – it looks great with black but also with white pants or denim. Aung Lynn 49 • Retailer and head tailor, Canali Boutique WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU?

YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?

We have just unveiled the brand new Canali boutique as a part of the Mitchell Ogilvie store in the city. The quality of these garments is second to none. All Canali pieces are produced in Italy and we have very close dealings with the head tailors.

Having two beautiful kids. Rachel is 16 and Katie is 13, and I am blessed to have them in my life. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to believe that I am father to these two girls who are smart, beautiful, but more importantly, kind, thoughtful and compassionate.

WHAT CAN CUSTOMERS EXPECT?

We are a firm believer in traditional shopping. We will take the time to get to know you – over a glass of champagne from our full-service bar – so we can put together a personalised outfit. WHY WORK IN MEN’S FASHION?

I’ve always had a passion for quality apparel and the finer things in life. When I was about 15 there was a luxury store near where I worked. Although I could never afford anything from it, I loved it. So I saved up my pennies and bought a t-shirt so I could have a taste. After that I was hooked.

Photograph • Richard Walker

FIRST JOB IN FASHION?

Thirty years ago at Cecil Gee, part of the Moss Brothers Group, in London. They were iconic. I was born in Burma and grew up in Singapore. I moved to London to work in fashion and lived there for 18 years. I moved to Brisbane in 2003 after my youngest daughter was born. After living here, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Richard Branson – he seems like such a genuine person. He is someone I admire so much because he worked very hard to get where he is today. AND YOUR FASHION HERO?

Got to be David Beckham – he is the smartest dresser in the world. WHERE ARE YOU HAPPIEST?

Sunday morning with my family at home in Brookwater. I love cooking and I always do breakfast on Sunday. WHAT’S NEXT?

We never stop in the store and I feel 2017 is going to be a big year. I am also planning my 50th birthday this year.

BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Apart from dealing with such beautiful customers, I love travelling. I travel to Italy and Hong Kong once or twice a year.

omething cataclysmic has just happened to Brisbane pub dining and I have a hunch it will raise the bar for the serious contenders in the pub food game. Take, for example, this snippet of a menu called Nose to Tail and its extraordinary tamarind glazed pork jowl; wood roast bone marrows; sweetbreads and chicken hearts; and duck, white truffle and pistachio sausage. Isn’t that something? The menu belongs to the Port Office Dining Room, recently taken over (the pub and the Dining Room) by Nick and Meagan Gregorski, who also run the Alliance Hotel in Spring Hill. They have refurbished the whole place, including a rather sexy Raffles-like bar upstairs (where I’m sure I’ve done some messy nightclubbing in another life). You can gaze into the kitchen from almost everywhere in the bistro-like Dining Room. A spanking new rotisserie slowly twirls chickens and ducks that make up the Rotisserie part of the menu: chicken Yucatan style ($27.90/$48.90); and the duck with rice, broccolini, burnt orange, white soy, miso and ginger ($36.90). It’s a terrific piece of duck – skin intensely basted and accompaniments just sweet enough to bring out the mild gaminess of the bird. There’s a wee dish of jus to the side. Moist? Absolutely. That was my wife’s main. I struggled to look past the Nose to Tail collection, settling on the pork jowl ($17.90, inset), sweetbreads and hearts ($19.90) and a main of suckling pig ($36.90). Three courses is a marathon for me. The fact that I went so hard is testament, I guess, to the allure of the menu. Best by a country mile is the plate of sweetbreads and chicken hearts. It’s kooky, with a couple of waffles filled with mushy peas, a mustard sauce, pea shoots and the offal: it’s great. Pork jowl is more of a crowd-pleaser, both sweetened and soured by the tamarind glaze and cooked pineapple, then cut by kohlrabi and radish slices. It’s a lot of big flavours rolled into one and the jowl is as rich as the coffers of Constantinople. I need to taste the marrows – the thought of them is driving me nuts. After that I’m almost full, but the suckling pig is terrific – cherry mostarda, pickled turnips, celeriac sauerkraut. Service is slick, more restaurant than pub, and the crockery and stemware follow suit. Given the rollercoaster ride of the menu, the drinks selection seems restrained. But there’s an experienced sommelier on board so I’m sure things will heat up. Is this the best pub dining room in Brisbane? You bet.

reacle is big in the UK. The Celtic countries love it. Irish treacle bread is enjoyed slathered with butter. The Scots use it in scones and the Welsh in a dense toffee. The Sassenachs created this celebrated tart, which has a chewy texture. Try substituting white breadcrumbs with brown breadcrumbs or blitzed oats to elevate this quality. Many recipes use only golden syrup, which can make the tart overly sweet. Add lemon juice and zest, along with the bitter treacle, to restore order to the union.

TART SHELL: Combine icing sugar, egg yolk and iced water in a bowl. Sift flour and salt on to a clean work surface, scatter over diced butter and toss together. Pour over the sugar mixture and mound the ingredients together. With the heel of your hand, spread or smear the ingredients away from you in a firm motion. Gather the mass and repeat this process until only a few flecks of butter remain then knead briefly and form into a flattened ball. Wrap in cling wrap and chill for 30 mins. Next, place pastry between two circles of greaseproof paper and roll out with a heavy rolling pin. Every few rolls give a quarter turn and roll until the pastry is 5mm thick. Next, remove the top sheet of greaseproof and carefully roll pastry around the pin and unroll over the tart tin. Gently press into place; pay special attention to corners. Line with one of the paper circles and fill with pastry weights, then freeze for 30 mins. To bake, preheat oven to 190C and cook for 15 mins then remove paper and weights, reduce to 170C and cook until golden. It should be fully cooked, dry to the touch and starting to flake. Cool before filling. Filling Preheat oven to 180C. Combine golden syrup, treacle, cream, salt, zests and lemon juice in a heavy-based pot and stir over a medium heat until smooth and very hot. Remove from the heat and whisk in breadcrumbs and eggs. Spoon into baked pastry case and distribute raspberries evenly. Bake for 20 mins or until the filling is just set in the centre. Carefully remove tart from the tin and cool on a cake rack for 30 mins. Slice into portions and serve with cream. Serves 8. ALASTAIR MCLEOD is the chef-owner of Al’FreshCo. alfreshco.com.au

T

he sunroof is open, tunes fill the air and I’m doing laps of The Esplanade at Surfers Paradise. My boyfriend Chris is scaling nearby stairs to get the “magazine quality” photos I’ve requested of the car. Suddenly, I notice a man beside the red light I’m stopped at, pointing at me frantically, trying to get my attention. Are my lights on? Have I hit something, maybe a cat, and now it’s stuck to the bumper bar? Oh no, now he’s calling out, still pointing. I manage to lip-read the words “nice car” as he turns the point into a big thumbs up. Relieved, I try to convey a casual “oh thanks” with a bewildered wave and he gleefully smiles back, thrilled I’ve seen him. Well, I certainly don’t get this attention in my little Mazda2. I’m in a Tango Red 2017 Audi A3 sedan, pretending it’s mine for the compliments of a stranger on the footpath. But the car is really for a weekend test ride from Audi Centre Springwood. “Would you like an

induction?” the sales attendant had asked me the day before. Feeling it impolite to decline, I had stepped into the leather driver’s seat wondering how different it could really be to my Mazda. “Put your foot on the break and push the button to start,” he says. “Handbreak is that button.” Yes, it’s different. Rolling on to the six-lane highway sans salesman, I am about as cautious and confident as an L-plater. But several kilometres later the smooth ride has eased my nerves and I’ve told the GPS navigation system our hotel so it can plan our route. The technology astounds me. A 12.3-inch pop-up screen on the dash, in addition to my screen behind the wheel, means the boyfriend can explore the technology (and heated seats) to his heart’s content without interrupting my concentration. The navigation becomes very handy when we arrive to find the hotel overbooked and our oceanfront room turned into the offer of another “just down the road” at Carrara. More time in this vehicle is no great imposition so off we go. I guess not every business has the technology of Audi. details 2017 Audi A3 sedan, 1.4-litre turbo petrol S-Tronic 110kW/250Nm, from $44,990, audicentrespringwood.com.au

craic team Actor mines his Irish heritage for comedic two-hander

ean Hawkins is under pressure to perfect a range of Irish accents for his latest stage role. Sean, 29, is, after all, the son of a Northern Irishman. Now he and fellow actor Grant Cartwright are playing more than a dozen characters between them in the award-winning Irish two-hander, Stones in his Pockets, opening at QUT Gardens Theatre later this week. “My dad is a bit of a character so I have grown up understanding the Irish vernacular and culture,” he says. “It’s in my blood, but I’ve still had to work hard on accents.” The drama, by Northern Irish writer Marie Jones, covers the clash of cultures when a Hollywood movie production disturbs the quiet of a small, Irish rural community in County Kerry. Sean describes it as having “moments of comedy and moments of pathos and tragedy”, which helped the play to win a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 1996 and to be named the Irish Theatre Awards’ best play. Sean says he loves the work of Irish playwrights. “They have a great sense of disruption,” he says. “They are good at black comedy but they also do the lighter comedy well.” Sean’s main role in the play is as local film extra Jake Quinn, who, along with everyone else in town, is mesmerised by a beautiful American movie star, Caroline, who fails to master the Irish accent. “It’s My dad is a well-written play, it’s a lot of a bit of a character fun,” he says. “There are a lot of so I have grown props and trickery for us to play up understanding so many different characters – it’s the Irish a real challenge. “Thankfully there is a good chemistry and trust between (Grant and I). We know we have each other’s back.” Sean grew up in Perth and moved to Sydney eight years ago after graduating from WAAPA (Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts) in 2009. He won a 2014 Sydney Theatre Award for “best leading actor in an independent production” for his role in another Irish play Howie the Rookie. “Acting is a funny profession because there is a lot of instability but it’s also rewarding,’’ he says. PIONEERING SPIRITS A blaze of Sante Fe glory rips into town as part of a show celebrating three women artists

T

here are certain names that serve as drawcards in the world of visual arts and Georgia O’Keeffe is one of them. The ground-breaking American artist is a feminist icon and a much-loved artist all over the world. But generally, you don’t really get to see her work close up unless you visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Sante Fe, New Mexico. However, a little bit of Sante Fe has come to us in the exhibition O’Keeffe, Preston, Cossington Smith: Making Modernism, which is now showing at Queensland Art Gallery. This is a striking show juxtaposing the works of O’Keeffe with two Australian modernists. It was a stroke of genius and what attracted Cody Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum’s director of curatorial affairs and the bloke who made this happen.

32

He said people often asked to borrow O’Keeffe works to cash in on the name. Generally he says no, but when he was approached to lend works for a show that would contextualise her work by showing it with two Australians, he thought it a very interesting proposition. And so we have 30 works by each artist, which makes this a pretty big show. Of course, O’Keeffe is the obvious star, but Margaret Preston also has a huge following, and Grace Cossington Smith’s reputation just grows and grows. The hero image of the show is O’Keeffe’s Ram’s Head, Blue Morning Glory which combines two of her obsessions – the skulls she found near her desert home and the flora that features in many of the works in this show. When it was shown in 1939, O’Keeffe made possibly her most potent statement about her feeling for the paradox of the skulls, with their strange, residual life force: ‘The bones seem to cut sharply to the centre of something that is keenly alive in the desert, even though it is vast and empty and untouchable – and knows no kindness with all its beauty’.” To have her work here is exciting for any student or art lover, and as an added bonus there is a film about her showing in a little alcove at the exhibition. The Lego Batman Movie

Power Rangers

lllll

lllll

Think Jerry Maguire directed by Michael Mann with lots of Batman jokes. That was Chris McKay’s studio pitch for his hotly anticipated Lego Movie sequel. He didn’t mention his psychoanalytic interpretation of the Caped Crusader’s emotional issues – executives’ attention spans are short. The Lego Batman Movie might be described as a metasuperhero fantasy (the characters, after all, are quite literally action figures). And the filmmakers have liberated a cacophonous army of super villains – Clayface, Penguin, Great White Shark, Poison Ivy, King Kong and Voldemort among them – for the final, epic action sequence. But it’s Batman’s personal demons that give the film its emotional core. McKay and his team of writers (Seth GrahameSmith gets the story credit) zero in on the psychological pathology of the character’s behaviour. Superheroes tend to be loners and outsiders – it comes with the territory. But in this version, the Dark Knight (Will Arnett) is an emotionally repressed, socially awkward, selfabsorbed control freak. He also has a deep-seated fear of intimacy, caused by the premature death of his parents. Bruce Wayne barely makes an appearance in The Lego Batman Movie. The crime fighter has become so enamoured of the alternative persona he has constructed for himself that he even wears his mask around the house. Once he has parked the Batmobile each night, Batman’s social life consists of watching old romantic comedies. His world is turned upside down when honey-voiced Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson) takes over the police commissioner’s job from her father. Unlike the former police chief, Barbara doesn’t actually need Batman – when it comes to fighting bad guys, she’s quicker, smarter and more agile. But she humours him, clearly because of their shared history/chemistry. Also challenging the status quo is the eager-to-please orphan, Dick Grayson (Michael Cera), who Bruce Wayne unwittingly adopts, paving the way for a stream of Robin jokes. The Lego Batman Movie is a fairly classic hero’s journey. In this case, the lesson Batman must learn is how to get along with others. Playful, clever, jam-packed with popculture references, The Lego Batman Movie has clearly been made by someone who is intimately acquainted with his iconic subject. Despite a cast of thousands and the madcap action adventure pace, the film’s ending just, well, clicks.

Even in their heyday, the Power Rangers were B-list superheroes. More than two decades after the morphing teenage misfits made their movie debut, a plastic Lego action figure is capable of running rings around them. Star Trek, Mad Max: Fury Road ... multiplex audiences are becoming increasingly accustomed to the idea that a reboot can match and sometimes even surpass the original. In this case, the bar was already pretty low. And still Power Rangers fails to clear it. The third film in the franchise has absolutely nothing to add to the genre. Not even Bryan Cranston, as the all-knowing Zordon, or Elizabeth Banks’ fabulously monikered villain Rita Repulsa can transcend the paucity of the material. The morphing teenage misfits are up against a clichéridden script and clunky direction. The one area in which the remake can’t be faulted is its diversity. Australianborn actor Dacre Montgomery plays Jason, the lead Red Ranger. The Blue Power Ranger (RJ Cyler) is a genius on the autism spectrum and Mexican-American actor Becky G’s Yellow Ranger is a lesbian. Rounding out the team are British actor Naomi Scott and Chinese actor Ludi Lin. Raw and convincingly rebellious, these adolescent thrill-seekers – who stumble across the ancient, glowing medallions after an explosion in a mining site – struggle with the team work required to morph into their superhero alter-egos, succeeding just in time. The movie, on the other hand, never stood a chance.

Months of uncertainty finally end. You realise that you don’t need to please everyone. Some have to say “goodbye”, but know it’s time to move on. Fiesty Ariens don’t take long to rise above setbacks and start again. Expect changes.

It’s time you crushed the wallflower within. If feeling shy, let the cosmos take your hand. This week is gentle on your soul and open with introductions. Luxuriate in others’ love and nurturing. In time, you’ll return the favour.

For Geminis, life is a great adventure. Mystery draws you on. Structured discipline or routine holds no charm, as you prefer to learn through experience. So if the past few weeks have felt somewhat tethered, you now break free.

Appetites are satiated in a week that’s hungry for meaning. You’re eager to taste life’s delights. For some, this may be spiritual, for others a creative leap. Meanwhile, love edges one step closer to becoming unconditional.

Leos dip into a mixed bag of fortunes this week. Don’t place too much importance on money. Count your blessings. Life has more to offer than dollar signs. If a financial dream has lost its sparkle, perhaps follow another.

Ever been in a situation when you’re being serious and others think you’re joking? Frustrating. This week you have a choice. You can either fall in with everyone else, or find a way to put your point across. Tactfully, please.

Conflict needs sorting, but another’s jealousy may complicate things. Keep tactful explanations up your sleeve. At work, impatience could lead you astray. Don’t waste energy, or you could end up exhausted – with little to show.

Scorpios are well known for voicing their views. Some admire this confidence, others find it annoying. Opposition fuels your obstinacy – especially if you think you’re right. And this week, you leave no margin of doubt.

The cosmos is feeling domestic, with children playing a more important role in your life. If you intend to add another twig to the family tree, well and good. Otherwise, take precautions. Whatever the case, enjoy this delightful week.

The cosmos offers a change of pace. Restless energy makes you look for new experiences. Some also receive unexpected visits or calls, or surprise others with good news. Travel is possible, along with new study opportunities.

There’s no one quite like Aquarius to scoff in the face of adversity and turn bad luck in your favour. Still, you might like to know that many power planets are on your side too, and striking canny deals on your behalf. It’s looking good.

It’s funny how things improve once you “surrender”. The next few weeks bring progress on a matter that’s been irritating you for ages. This comes when the issue in question hardly seems to matter any more. Or so you thought.

aking other people’s homes look beautiful is all part of stylist Lana Caves’ job. Arranging cushions, rugs, furniture and homewares in just the right way to bring a home to life can sometimes leave her with house envy, but at the end of the day, Lana is always happy to return to her own nest. “It motivates me to get stuck into my own house,” Lana says, sitting in the dining room of her relaxed replica Queenslander in Mitchelton with her toy cavoodle Cubba playing at her feet. She bought the home with her husband Dale in 2006 soon after their daughter Yasmin, 12, was born. They were searching for a house they wouldn’t have to move from again and fell in love with its open-plan design, wide deck and homely feel. “It’s just a really nice house to be in and it’s great for entertaining. You can easily carry a conversation from the back deck to the kitchen, which I love,” she says. In 2011, after Yasmin had learnt to swim, they decided to add a pool, but initial works caved in due to heavy rain that came with the flood. The pool installation turned into a five-month project, but it’s one Lana says was worth the time and effort. “It’s the best toy for our family. We spend a lot of time out here.” Surrounded by frangipani trees, bamboo, mango trees, yukkas and golden palms, the

pool area is their own little piece of subtropical paradise overlooked by the back deck. Lana has brought a coastal style to her home befitting the city’s climate and lazy summer days spent lounging by the pool. Blue and white are prominent colours throughout, featuring everywhere from the tablecloth on the dining room table and vases in the kitchen to outdoor rugs and cushions. “I do love blue and white. I love that whole classic American Hamptons influence. In my childhood home we had a lot of it,” she says. Lana cherishes the pieces that used to belong to her mum, who passed away five years ago. “I do have a lot of sentimental pieces like vases and silverware. I also like different patterns and I like them to be slightly unusual.” Sticking to one particular look I don’t go can be difficult at times for Lana, out and buy who after styling a house can feel everything in one inclined to change things around go. My house has her own home. “I have moments of been evolving wanting everything to be minimalist for 10 years but then I think it looks too empty so I pile it all back in again,” she says. Lana worked in special events marketing before moving into visual merchandising and later home styling. Until recently Dale worked for Qantas, allowing the family to take trips around the world. Black and white photographs from their travels adorn the walls, but Lana isn’t inclined to collect pieces from their trips. “I prefer to support locally when it comes to my home.” One room to undergo a significant transformation recently has been Yasmin’s bedroom, going from little girl’s room to budding teenager’s room. “It used to be baby pink when she was younger but now she’s started high school we’ve tween-ified it a bit.” One of Lana’s favourite pieces of advice for people who love home decorating is to take it slowly. “It’s bit by bit. I don’t go out and buy everything in one go. My house has been evolving for 10 years, changing things and adding bits and pieces.” Beach vibe ... It’s all in the details.

A Grand Estate Meets Refined Elegance Appassionata is Italian for ’With Passion’ whilst Villa is Italian for ’Estate’. Combined it provides the opulence of ’Appassionata Villa’ which takes pride of place in the hills of Pullenvale on Millionaires’ Row. The Villa was inspired by the design of the French provincial villa owned by the late French Couturier, Oscar de la Renta. Approximately 1000sqm of opulent living nestled within a 12,000sqm estate, this home epitomizes a grand lifestyle with a

seamless transition between indoor & out as the timber and marble blend, via extensive glass doors, into the vast expanse of elegant sandstone. The utilization of formal and informal living is what makes living here truly enviable.
