n case you missed it, we’ve had a bit of rain and while large parts of the state are still mopping up after Tropical Cyclone Debbie, in Brisbane the grass is growing and gardens are starting to bloom again after months of extreme heat and dry. From experience, we know that tough times bring out the best in our communities but it doesn’t always take a natural disaster to bring people together. Footpath gardens are popping up all over the city as residents and business owners unite to create vegie patches, which the whole community can enjoy. There is something special about growing your own produce and whether it is chickens in your backyard or beehives at the bottom of the garden, space doesn’t stop our “city farmers” from creating a delicious urban harvest. Brisbane produces lots of amazing things including some incredibly talented people such as singing sensation Dami Im who is stepping on to the stage for the first time in a musical this week. Dami plays Teen Angel in Grease: The Arena Experience, which is normally a male role, and is looking forward to singing the classic Beauty School Dropout. Next week we debut a new-look magazine. Brisbane News will undergo a facelift, but will still have all the stories that readers tell us they love – the people, food, fashion, beauty and homes. After lots of feedback from our readers and advertisers we are changing the size of the magazine to make it more portable and improving the paper it’s printed on to showcase our beautiful photography. Make sure you look out for next week’s issue.

Dami Im 28 • singer It seems there is nothing Dami Im has not done when it comes to singing. She has notched up number one records, represented Australia at Eurovision and won national singing competitions. Now she is taking on her first role in a musical, playing Teen Angel in Harvest Rain’s production of Grease: The Arena Experience, which opens this week in Brisbane. “I must be the only person in Australia who hasn’t grown up watching Grease as a child,’’ she says. “As a child I was always playing the classical piano and didn’t have the confidence to sing in public so I never had a part in a musical.’’ In a nod to girl power, Dami takes on the character of Teen Angel, which is usually played by an older man. Dami will sing Grease classic Beauty School Dropout and is looking forward to taking on the role of a wise mentor to Frenchy, a member of the cool Pink Ladies, who urges her to return to high school. “Beauty School Dropout is a funny song with lots of humour and it’s really touching. It makes you feel emotional. You are dealing with a teenager who feels like she is lost. The world can be a confusing place,’’ she says. “I love singing to a live audience and it is cool to be doing something different to what I normally do … to be sharing the stage with 900 people.’’ When Dami was in Year 11 at John Paul College, Daisy Hill, she imagined a singing career would be “really cool’’ but she never thought it would ever happen. She only developed the confidence to sing in public when she was given a solo spot in her worship band at the Brisbane Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church at Eight Mile Plains. After finishing a Bachelor of Music with a piano major she successfully auditioned for a Masters of Voice at Queensland Conservatorium of Music, South Bank, and vowed to pursue a singing career. “I was always practising in my bedroom. I wasn’t that good at it but I kept practising,’’ she says. Dami hopes to return to Brisbane to perform concerts later this year and is also working on a new album. Even though she is constantly travelling to Sydney and Melbourne, The X Factor Australia 2013 winner says Logan remains home. “I like being around my family, where it’s quiet and peaceful and I can get away from the craziness,’’ she says.

Once I went to see a Chinese apothecary in ’ve been having some acupuncture Fortitude Valley to be cured of the flu. He lately. Once a week, for a fee, I am gave me a brown paper bag full of twigs and turned into a human pin cushion. I like other dubious looking plant matter and it. I hope it works. My acupuncturist instructed me to make a soup of the asked recently if I felt better. bag contents. I was to boil it, let it “Hard to tell,” I said. “I One of cool, then drink it all in one go. never feel that good.” the weirdest Which I did, foolishly, before “How long has this been therapies I tried attending a wedding. I was fine going on?” he asked. was ancient during the ceremony, and until “Oh, since about 1974,” I Egyptian halfway through the reception replied. As you can see, he has meditation actually, when my stomach his work cut out for him. started to make gurgling sounds I like acupuncture because it’s and, well, I’ll spare you the gory oriental. My acupuncturist also has details. My wife was furious. She’d told me I me on a course of Chinese herbs which I shouldn’t have taken the stuff and, well, she like too. Some people might find them bitter was right as usual. but I like the taste. I take them occasionally.

I like alternative therapies and, let me tell you, I’ve tried them all in my time. I’ve seen naturopaths, homeopaths and even tried reiki, a healing technique from Japan that alleviates stress and promotes relaxation. Practitioners run their hands just above a person’s body in their energy field. The belief is that life-force energy surrounds all living things, and if left unbalanced, it causes illness and stress. Makes sense, right? Did it work for me? Again, it’s very hard to tell. One of the weirdest therapies I tried was ancient Egyptian meditation. The best thing about that was that I got to watch some ancient Egyptian temple dancing as part of the process. I was a young bachelor at the time, you understand.

Did that have any benefit? Again, I really couldn’t tell. I was going to have a crack at one of those flotation tanks too but I suffer from claustrophobia so it wouldn’t be good for me. I’ve tried yoga but I lack concentration. When I was supposed to be concentrating on my breath I would be thinking about Chinese food or wondering what was on television. I came to the conclusion that much of this New Age stuff was hooey, but not acupuncture. I reckon it works. After my third session recently I walked out of the clinic actually feeling better. At home I’m chugging down the herbs like Milo with no Vesuvius-like effects on my tummy thus far. I’ll keep you posted.

ees lazily circle lavender flowers as Tim Jay digs the soil around a lush basil bush. Nearby, fat tomatoes and glossy chillies compete for attention and carrot tops peek out of the ground. Tim is not in some rambling suburban garden. He’s out in the community garden he set up on the footpath in front of the bustling Teneriffe cafe Kin & Co., which he co-owns. “Once you are up and running, you’ll be surprised by how much food you can grow on a footpath,” he says. “We’ve grown so much basil that we’ve just had to give away free jars of pesto to people in the area.” Footpath gardens, also known as verge gardens, are popping up all over the city as Brisbane residents and business owners realise the possibilities of growing their own fruit and vegetables right on their doorstep. With the help of friends and locals, Tim started the verge garden outside his coffee shop five months ago and has seen it bring people together. “From the start I’ve encouraged our neighbours and people who come to the cafe to take from the garden and also to help with the garden, and people have been really keen to do both,” Tim says. “Young and old who live in Newstead and Teneriffe regularly come down and help out,

whether that’s by giving advice or watering or even leaving plants for us.” Produce includes coffee beans, tomatoes, lavender, flowers, chillies, garlic, spring onion and herbs. “A lot of people think it may be more difficult to grow plants in such a limited space compared to a traditional backyard garden, but if you plan and know the area’s microclimate it can actually be quite doable,” Tim says. unning out of fresh eggs is never a problem for Allana Robinson and her family. The five extremely contented chickens living in her backyard take care of that. “We just have to add a fried egg or two to our meals or we run across the road and give them to our neighbours, because sometimes they (the hens) produce so many eggs that we just get overwhelmed,” Allana says. She says that if the conditions are right,

each hen can lay an egg every day. But it’s not only sustenance the chooks provide. Allana says it’s not uncommon to find her children sitting with their chickens on the lounge, or chasing them around the backyard. “We have three kids in our family, and they have really been able to bond with the chickens,” she says. “Each chicken has its own personality and mannerisms, so they are pretty amusing animals. It’s as if the chickens were dogs, and sometimes I think our dog sees the chickens as fellow dogs. I know the kids definitely play with them as if they were dogs.” Allana and her husband Chris built their own chicken coop by converting an old wooden garden shed, keeping the original stained glass window and adding an internal door and chicken run. “Some areas of the city, such as suburbs near South Brisbane Cemetery (at Dutton Park), have a lot of foxes which means you’ll need extra security to keep your chickens safe,” she says. “Chickens aren’t very brave though so they keep within their boundaries, and they are fairly self-sufficient so long as you provide water. “They really are an amazing pet for a city backyard.”

espite the occasional bee sting, Rosemary Neal has a special connection with the insects that produce the homemade honey she drizzles on her morning toast. “It’s special to know that you worked hard to help the bees, and they worked hard to make the honey. You grow to have a special connection to them through your mutual hard work,” she says. Rosemary and her husband Garry, 54, built their first beehive in their Coorparoo backyard two years ago and now have a bee colony that produces more than 40kg of honey a season. “One of the best parts about beekeeping is that our flowers and our veggie garden have really improved and are a lot healthier because of the bees,” says Rosemary, who has

one colony of European bees and two different types of native bees in her backyard. Rosemary’s colony of European bees has around 50,000 bees, with the queen laying up to 3000 eggs a day. Rosemary’s father was also a hobby beekeeper, but she did not follow in his footsteps earlier because she was worried that the bees might hurt her kids. “A lot of people are worried about bees especially if they have kids with an allergy, which is why it’s a good idea to address any issues that your neighbours might have before you start your colony.” Rosemary keeps her bees in a Flow Hive, which allows the honey to be poured out of the hive from a tap. Her latest batch of honey had the flavour of Ivory Curl Tree, which flowered six weeks before they harvested the honey. “For just the two of us, (we have) a huge amount of honey so we happily share it with our friends and neighbours.”

WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU?

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

We recently launched Code Camp in Queensland. We teach kids to code and write their own iPhone apps as a school holiday activity. Me and the other two founders started Code Camp (codecamp.com.au) in Sydney three years ago and each season it just grew.

These kids and the excited looks on their faces, when they make their own character jump or run and create their own little game.

WHAT WAS YOUR ‘AHA’ MOMENT? Photograph • Richard Walker

Realising what the demand for coding classes for kids is. The kids themselves have driven the camps. They’re just so hungry for it, they love it and keep pushing us harder. . WHAT WAS YOUR INTRODUCTION TO CODING? My mum won a computer in a school

fete raffle when I was five and my brother Matt was seven, so we spent our childhood making computer games. Since then I’ve had a long and exciting career in IT for social impact – doing projects such as tracking bears in South America and working on the GPS collars, working on turtle and crocodile projects.

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?

Creating this journey for these kids and kickstarting their inspiration. On a more concrete level, we’ve created our own tools for the kids to use. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BRISBANE?

It’s becoming a much more innovative, cutting edge city. It’s kept its charm and personality, but it’s becoming an international city with a real forward-thinking focus. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

We want to work with the education system to give kids a real path, not just into coding, but into the world of innovation and entrepreneurialism. Leanne Edmistone

beauty faves... 1. Gemma Vendetta Vegan Natural BB/CC Cream, $47.95. “It’s just a great colour match – light, easy and you can wear it in hot weather and know it’s not going to slide off. Perfect for our Brisbane climate.” – Emma

3. Neek Skin Organics Vegan Natural Lipstick, $28, in Friday On My Mind. “This nourishing lipstick is perfect for everyday use, an easy go-to colour that is flattering on most skin types. Great to wear at the office and then transitions perfectly to evening.” – Rebecca A beautiful life ... Sisters Emma Dowling, Rebecca Medcalf and Melissa Krueger have launched beauty store Organic Index in Paddington.

ike most teenage girls, Brisbane’s Dowling sisters were fond of the bathroom mirror – particularly before a night on the town. “When one of us went out, we all went out,” says middle sister Rebecca Medcalf, now 37. “You could not even see the counter for all the layers. “Emma would have the smoky eye with the really dark lip liner and red lipstick, I went through the gothic stage and Lid (Melissa) went through the glitter stage.” Now grown up with partners and children of their own, the Mackayraised trio has turned that passion into a “clicks and mortar” business, Organic Index, selling natural and organic beauty products. “We’ve always had a huge interest in (natural beauty) and were consumers of these products for a lot of years and decided it was just really frustrating to have to buy things like perfumes online when you could not smell them, or a foundation when you couldn’t try it,” Rebecca says. Organic Index launched online last April

and the store, in Paddington, late last year. The sisters have plans for stores in other cities, plus regional centres. “We want to be known as a one-stop-shop for make-up, skincare, everything you need to support your health and beauty,’’ says Emma Dowling, 39. The sisters are no strangers to business, and also work for the family’s private equity firm, a diverse portfolio straddling shopping centres, self-storage in Europe and breweries in the Solomon Islands. Rebecca studied agriculture at Longreach Pastoral College, worked as a jillaroo and, for 12 years, farmed 2000ha of cattle country near Esk, west of Brisbane, with husband Andrew. “We were as close as you can get to organic farming without being certified organic,” Rebecca says. Meanwhile, Emma renovated properties in London and Queensland, and also lived in Melbourne and Canberra, where her

partner, Craig Johnson, an officer in the Australian Army, was stationed. Organic skincare has long been a hobby for Emma, also a former jillaroo, who discovered its benefits while on a sheep station in South Australia’s Murray Bridge. “It was dry and hot, and normal skincare products didn’t work. Then an ex-boyfriend’s mother said, ‘Try Jurlique’. It started me looking outside what was mainstream.” For youngest sister Melissa Krueger, the switch to organics came later. “I’d be thinking unless a beauty product cost $800 it couldn’t work,” says the 35-year-old. Then a hairdresser recommended the Erica Brooke Skincare Honey Cream Cleanser. “It was the most amazing product I’ve ever tried,” she says. That lightbulb moment was enough to prompt Melissa to qualify as a facialist and make-up artist – and join her sisters in the fledgling beauty venture. “Liddy saw we were having an adventure and was not going to have a bar of being left behind!” Rebecca says. Lightweight, non-greasy, and truly stands the sun and surf test. Plus, the boys love it for a bit of extra sun protection on their scalps in summer.” – Melissa

2. One Seed Sample Pack, $45. “I really love this little pack because each of the natural scents develop quickly, based on an individual’s body chemistry.” – Melissa

5. Valor Men’s Shea & Pomegranate Face Balm, $49. “This light and creamy balm doubles as a moisturiser and a soothing post-shave product. In addition to the hero ingredients of locally grown organic macadamia and organic pomegranate oil, this also contains boswelia (frankincense) essential oil – a powerhouse ingredient for the micro cuts and grazes that go with shaving.” – Emma 6. Theseeke Activated Charcoal & Kakadu Plum Liquid Wash, $45.95. “This liquid cleanser is amazing for drawing impurities from your pores, because of the absorption qualities of the activated charcoal. Activated charcoal powder is proven to absorb thousands of times its own mass in harmful substances.” – Rebecca

hen you reminisce about the tumbler of retsina you sipped in the old town of Rhodes or the charry, smoky octopus enjoyed harbourside in Othoni, why is it that the experience can’t seem to be replicated back home? Often it’s the context. As a teenager on Paros, I ordered the cheapest thing on the menu. I was captivated by this gloopy fish paste and have never since found a version that comes close. Taramasalata is often too oily, not fishy enough, too runny and almost always dyed lurid pink. Today’s recipe is proper taramasalata. It is smooth, pungent and pale white in colour. Apologies to the Hellenic Republic for serving potato chips in lieu of pita and the addition of caviar. It will take you to the tavernas of Thessaloniki.

Taramasalata and potato chips 100g white bread, crusts removed 100g tarama (undyed, sourced from Samios Foods in Coorparoo ) 1 golden shallot, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely grated 200ml grapeseed oil 50ml lemon juice Salmon caviar, to serve Powdered seaweed, to serve

Chips 6 large scrubbed potatoes, thinly sliced Vegetable oil, for frying Sea salt

Soak bread in water for a brief moment then squeeze most of the water out with your hands. Place in a food processor with the tarama, shallot and garlic and process to a smooth paste. While the machine is running, add the oil very slowly until the mixture is thick and emulsified. Next add the lemon juice. Add a little warm water if necessary to achieve a light, soft textured dip. Spoon on to serving plate with caviar, dust with seaweed and accompany with chips. CHIPS Place potatoes into a large bowl of iced water as they are being sliced. Soak for 30 minutes then drain well. Preheat fryer to 170C and fry in small batches until lightly golden. Drain each batch on a cake rack and season with salt. Serves 8. Alastair McLeod is the chef-owner of Al’FreshCo. alfreshco.com.au

wo things make this job easy – appalling restaurants and great restaurants. Most of the others – 90 per cent of the places you and I visit – sit somewhere in the middle ground: decent, not thrilling and unless they hide a quirk or little side-step from the ordinary they sit in the no-man’s land of ‘nice’, hence the plethora of sevens and 7.5s on the tail-end of these reviews. Naim doesn’t do either appalling or great. In fact from nearly every angle it sits within the ‘nice’ category. But it is peddling something quirky; sufficiently removed from the pack that any shortfall in trappings or service wouldn’t matter a whit: the glimmer hides in the food. It is Middle Eastern and it specialises in the muddle of breakfast, brunch, dinner and lunch. At first glance the menu can seem a little too brunchy – fruit and sorbet, rice pudding, waffles, eggs – but a closer look shows them to be fanciful versions: rice pudding with cinnamon, cardamom, fruits and corn-chip crumble; eggs Tunisian style; avocado on toast comes with Persian feta, dukkha, poached eggs and pomegranate. There’s a burger ($20) on offer, and it’s pretty good – pulled pork patty, a good slab of melted cheese, spinach leaves, a nicely toasted bun and some cauliflower popcorn on the side. But the core of the place lies with the Middle Eastern stuff. Hummus kawarma (lamb mince, hummus, a few specks of garnish and a generous plate of flat bread triangles – $15) is good:, and even better when you try a few of the house pickles on top. The heart of its success lies in the hummus – tart, gently spiced, creamy and lush. The mince is good, but I reckon, with a little imagination, it could be a vehicle for something stellar. And kusheri ($16.50, pictured) – a mix of rice, lentils, chickpeas, cinnamon and cumin, tomato, fried onion, herbs and barberries, beetroot and tahini and a wedge of lemon is a magical mix of colours, flavours and textures. Naim inhabits a slightly rambling space with a smallish front room and a beautiful, airy dining room to the rear. It gets a cheerful buzz once the tables begin to fill. Using the silk purse and sows ear analogy is stretching things: even without the good work from the kitchen, Naim is ticking along pretty well. But it is the food, and the creative spirit behind the menu that separates it from the hundreds of decent, unremarkable Queensland restaurants.

ernard Fowler usually loves to own the stage as a frontman but in one gig he is happy to perform the support role. The New York-bred musician has been backing singer on every Rolling Stones tour since 1989. “I’m honoured to still be around after all of these years because there was a point when it wasn’t uncommon for the band to change personnel,’’ he says. Although Bernard sings to sell-out stadiums, his favourite gigs are more intimate concerts, such as this week’s Brisbane River Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 8, at Newstead. “That is when you have the connection with the audience,’’ he says. But he says being part of the Rolling Stones Concert on Rio De Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach in 2006, with an estimated 1.5 million fans, “was exhilarating and electric’’. “You couldn’t see where the audience ended,’’ he says. “It was incredible. When I think about that night I can still feel that rush of energy. It is one of the highlights of my musical life. “No matter the concert, I still get the rush before I go on stage. I still get the jitters.’’ Few people are more qualified to perform jazz versions of Rolling Stones anthems than Bernard who “knows the ins and outs’’ of every iconic song. So when he was approached by saxophonist and music arranger Tim Ries more than a decade ago, to see if he would be interested in performing jazz versions of The Rolling Stones, he was enthusiastic. Now, for the first time, Bernard will bring The Rolling Stones Project to Brisbane. “The reason why it works is because Tim’s arrangements are really good … it gives a new perspective and depth to the songs,’’ he says. Bernard promises classics from every decade, including No matter Ruby Tuesday and Honky Tonk Woman. the concert, I still “A lot of people don’t listen to jazz but have come get the rush before to hear these songs because they are such big Rolling I go on stage. I still Stones fans. They leave with a smile on their face.’’ get the jitters Los Angeles-based Bernard, 58, grew up listening to music on the radio in New York. He had his first top-40 hit as a band frontman, while still a teenager. He has worked with Yoko Ono and performed with Michael Hutchence. His first meeting with Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger was clandestine, after he was recommended by a producer friend following Bernard’s work with jazz legend Herbie Hancock. “I was told to get on this mystery flight to London … it wasn’t until I walked into the room for the meeting that I saw Mick Jagger. I was honoured and surprised,’’ he says.

MORE OF LESS … John Coburn’s 1969 gouache Mosque evokes the artist’s spiritual dimension; and Hume Highway Project by Peter Atkins, another star of QUT Art Museum’s latest exhibition drawn from its extensive collection.

back to basics

Reductionist artists give us so much more with less

T

hey say that less is more – but how do you demonstrate that? The folk at the QUT Art Museum have done it a rather clever way in a curated show using their collection. Less Than: Art and reductionism, an exhibition that demonstrates minimalism in art, is surprisingly comprehensive. I was expecting less but I got more instead, with a substantial show featuring some major artists including Leonard Brown, John Coburn, Alex Seton, Rover Thomas, Rosella Namok and a host of others who have erred on the minimal in their work. Leonard Brown and John Coburn are two favourites and both have a spiritual dimension and philosophy to their work. Coburn’s Mosque, a 1969 gouache, is a kind of simple mandala. Like so many of his works it evokes the numinous in a reductionist fashion. This exhibition and its companion, Earth

and Fire: Ceramics from the QUT Art Collection, are both curated intelligently. Less than: Art and reductionism was curated by Katherine Dionysius who says the show was inspired by how reductionism’s pursuit of less is at odds with the nature of art-making. “Art, by nature, is about creating a thing, an item, an object in the world,” Katherine says. “There are of course several art forms that resist the object, like performance and conceptual art. But the very nature of art is about creating something new, not reducing to less. In this sense reductionist art is such an interesting contradiction.” Rover Thomas’s pared back canvasses have a minimal aesthetic that is very appealing; and it’s no surprise to see Eugene Carchesio and John Nixon here. They have been working on the premise of less is more for years. Earth and fire: Ceramics from the QUT Art

Collection, celebrates a renewed interest in ceramic art. It was all the rage in the 1970s when everyone was having a crack, but then died down, although local diehards such as Warren Palmer, who is well represented in this exhibition, maintained the rage. Senior curator Vanessa Van Ooyen says the renewed attraction to the medium may have something to do with its low-tech approach, combined with a yearning to slow down in an era of digitisation and instant gratification. “The renewal of ceramic practice among makers and artists is a symptom of the need to engage the hand and escape the screen,” Vanessa says. “For some people ceramic-making works as a form of therapy and meditation. Its hypnotic and soothing process encourages complete focus, allowing makers to fully engage in the moment.’’

There are some beautiful ceramic works in this show including pieces by the late, great Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, whose vessels also meet the ideas of minimalism. Indigenous potter Thanakupi is represented too and her spherical stoneware pot, Thawaal, the black and white eagle fights with Cheth, the red and white eagle, is an earthy decorated piece. All the big names are here: Milton Moon, the McConnells (Phillip and his father Carl, both masters) and there’s a gorgeous piece by one of Queensland’s iconic artists, Kathleen Shillam. Her piece is called Little Horse. Well worth a look. SPACE COWBOY … Astronaut Roy Adams’ (Ryan Reynolds) daring recovery mission sets the scene for a lean, mean sci-fi thriller.

Life

Dance Academy: The Movie

lllll

lllll

Life’s shapeshifting monster owes a debt to Ridley Scott’s Alien but as is usual with the best tributes, Daniel Espinosa and his team steal rather than borrow. They just raised the bar for Alien: Covenant, scheduled for a May 18 release. Life is a lean, mean, claustrophobic sci-fi thriller set almost entirely aboard the spaceship (the formula works, why mess around with it?). Espinosa unsettles his audience from the get-go – with the recapture of the aforementioned space probe which has been knocked off course by a meteor storm. Roy Adams (Ryan Reynolds), the story’s regulation space cowboy, successfully “catches” the probe in a daring spacewalk that utilises an automated arm. But the tension in the lead-up is palpable. In contrast to conventional movie astronauts, this crew lacks bravado. Espinosa characterises his scientists as intelligent rather than invincible (and thus keenly aware of the risks involved). They harness their fear while still experiencing it. This makes them very relatable and leaves movie-goers holding their collective breath for a good part of the film. Since they are exceptionally evolved examples of humankind, these super-smart individuals rarely so much as raise their voices (there’s none of the customary conflict between clashing characters stuck in a confined space). Disciplined, experienced and exceptionally well-trained, they follow protocol even when the going gets really tough. In this, they take their cue from their unflappable captain (Russian actor Olga Dihovichnaya). Rounding out the small, select, multi-disciplined team are Ariyon Bakare’s paraplegic geneticist, Rebecca Ferguson’s risk management expert and Hiroyuki Sanada’s communications and infrastructure specialist. But Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Dr David Jordan, is key to unlocking the story. In a previous life, Jordan worked with the US Army, building hospitals in Syria – which he then saw blown up. Disillusioned by humanity, he now prefers the solitude of space and the company of an elite few. He has no desire to go back to Earth. But Jordan is about to be brutally reminded that life and death are inextricably linked. And that violence is part of the natural order. Life is a superior B movie made by an A-list team.

Dance Academy: The Movie is a spin-off of the two-time Emmy-nominated ABC TV series, watched by a generation of Australian schoolchildren. It’s set 18 months after the events of Series 3, in which the story’s narrator, Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin), breaks her back in a freak accident while performing on stage. Physically, the gifted ballerina has healed; emotionally, she is still struggling to accept life without dance and turns to writing as an alternative means of expression. Her fellow students are merciless, drawing attention to the melodrama of her very personal story – defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, and her Edward Cullen-like boyfriend (Christian, played by Jordan Rodrigues). That’s before Ben’s (Thomas Lacey) leukaemia returns or Kat (Alicia Banit) becomes embroiled in a phone sex scandal. Walker exhibits admirable restraint in the face of such potentially overwrought romantic tropes, encouraging his actors to underplay the key scenes. The characters’ selfdepreciating humour also serves the film well, as does the spectacular backdrop of Sydney Harbour. In a film like this, the dance sequences are crucial. The angular, modern sci-fi number created by Miranda Otto’s diva works well. And Tara and Ben’s self-choreographed dance routine is strong. Photos of the cast members that accompany the credits – precociously cute child performers every one of them – are a nice final touch.

The debut novel by Queensland-raised, London-based author Joy Rhoades is a slow burn. Set in drought in 1945, this tale of one woman’s quest to save her family’s outback sheep station takes a long time to kick into gear. Persevere and the historical drama that unfolds pays homage to rural communities in unforgiving environments. Kate Dowd is a young wartime bride whose soldier husband is shipped out immediately after their wedding. Amid the dust and drought, Kate is forced to step up and manage her family’s property and the challenges of two Italian POWs, a young indigenous housemaid, a recalcitrant 10-yearold ward, angry creditors and a station manager with little respect for her authority. Rhoades’ characters, dialogue and details are authentic to the time.

For a tale centred on Jewish characters in World War II, this novel offers a surprising amount of hope, despite terrible events. The book opens with teenager Noa working at a German railway station, after becoming pregnant to a Nazi soldier and being thrown out of home. Having had her child cruelly taken from her, Noa acts rashly when a carriage full of Jewish babies destined for death pulls into the station. She grabs a child and runs. Then she is rescued by a travelling circus and the real adventure begins. Noa must learn the flying trapeze to remain with the circus and keep her secret – and her new charge – safe. She forms an unconventional bond with the lead trapeze artist, but they both harbour dark secrets that threaten to destroy not just themselves, but the circus itself.

As the only child of parents scarred by the Holocaust and a family murdersuicide, Caroline Baum carried the weight of parental expectations. Her parents enjoyed the finer things of life – concerts, designer clothes and overseas holidays – but were unfulfilled in marriage, pinning their hopes on Caroline. After analysing her childhood, Caroline hints at breaking free, working for British Vogue and the BBC. She intrigues with tales of her mother harbouring Russian defectors during the Cold War. But the book’s tone becomes heavier as her father is operated on for bowel cancer and develops dementia. Caroline keeps much of her own life hidden in this book. Unearthing more of the gems that brought her joy as she forged her independence may have revealed treasures in the darkness.

Single mother Louise is an open book. Her life is routine, centred on her five-year-old son. She’s a loyal friend and reliable employee – although there is plenty of wine indulgence to cope with loneliness, boredom and night terrors. Then she meets “the man in the bar” and everything changes. Smitten after a drunken kiss, sensible dependable Louise is soon in a steamy affair, despite the shock of discovering David is not only married, but he’s also her new boss in the posh psychiatry clinic where she works. Adding to the complications is David’s beautiful fragile wife, Adele, who soon becomes Louise’s secret “best friend”. Louise’s curiosity takes her deeper into a scenario we all know is going to end in tears, at the very least. The ending is a shock with a twist – a tale for a Hollywood thriller.

quiet cul-de-sac in Highgate Hill has been home to Angela Papacostas all her life. She grew up next door, where her parents still live, and bought this post-war cottage with her husband Perry at auction 10 years ago. Architects Kon Panagopoulos and Natalie Dixon recognised her profound attachment deserved special consideration in the renovation. “Angela and Perry have a long history in this suburb and in particular this street so we wanted to make sure that the interventions on the pre-war house sat well within its context,” Kon says. “We wanted to be certain that the house addressed the street in a respectful manner and celebrated the history of the existing house whilst hinting at what was new behind.” The old cottage facade was refurbished, with stained glass windows restored and fresh white paint applied. The new addition, in contrast, has a contemporary gable-roof and dark-stained timber cladding. In a playful way, it appears to “collide” with the side of the old house. “The new (extension) is deliberately clad in vertical timber in opposition to the horizontal weatherboards of the existing (cottage),” Kon says. “We wanted to clearly delineate old from new but we also wanted the new intervention to have a similar language, to blend rather than clash. The simple new form allows the existing building to shine.” The original single-level cottage has been transformed into three levels of accommodation with views of the city skyline to the north. The entry level is dedicated to bedrooms with the main living level below and a rumpus room and pool further down. A timber vestibule and wide staircase smooth the transition from the front door down to the house’s social levels. Central stairs create separation between spaces on each level. “(This is a) departure from the norm which is open-plan living,” Kon says. The kitchen has a 6m-long marble island bench that is a “sculptural element in its own right”. The galley arrangement opens to a dining room with city views and adjacent barbecue terrace that doubles dining capacity for large get-togethers. “I have always lived on the upper level to get the better (city) view, but my priority here was to have the pool and yard within reach of the living space,” Angela says. Not to be outdone by that city view, the interior has thoughtfully chosen finishes and colours. Timber takes top billing, chosen for its inherent warmth. “It was used throughout the interior for the joinery, floors, walls and screens creating a coherent uniform backdrop for the clients’ select furniture pieces,” Kon says. The lighting, furniture and decor elements were curated by Angela with great aplomb. “It took us three years to collect everything for the interior of the house,” she says. “It’s not over the top but we wanted to make sure there was plenty of colour pop.” ARCHITECT • KP Architects, ph: 3216 1466.

If waiting on a promise, check it’s still scheduled for delivery. Be vigilant, Taurus. If you’re not being kept informed, find out why. Later in the week, life gets a pleasant nudge in the right direction. As does romance.

22 23

with Tanya Obreza

Much can be achieved this week, as long as burnout is avoided. Push yourself but not to the point where you’re teetering on the edge. Also, don’t let competitors force you beyond your limits. Remember, you call the shots.

A caring cosmos keeps a watchful eye on your progress, helping to restore what was previously taken or forfeited. The most prized recovery is your self-esteem. Your options expand and new opportunities appear.

If you can command some sort of respect in this self-serving world, you’re not doing too badly. This week, you fare better than most, perhaps because you’ve finally sorted your thoughts and suddenly, it all makes sense.

There’ll be moments this week when everyone else seems to be at play, except you. The upside? Projects promise many rewards. And don’t worry too much about your social schedule – it will overflow again soon enough.

Routine is good but the same thing day-in day-out can become a blur of blandness. So the hint of romance, creativity or, perhaps, travel arrive just in time. Throw yourself wholeheartedly into the options on offer.

If previously asked to maintain secrecy, you’ve kept good faith. But situations change from day to day, and now could be the time to tell all. This is especially the case if your silence is doing more harm than good – mostly, to yourself.

It’s tempting to make excuses for a loved one, or ignore their faults. But if you’ve been taken for granted, don’t let it continue. You’ve been generous enough. Make yourself scarce and leave them to their own devices.

You’re angry, Sagittarius, and want to speak your mind. But for now, it’s wiser to say nothing at all. Don’t make statements that are hard to take back. If you choose to push personal boundaries, be sure you can cope with the overflow.

Maybe you can have too much of a good thing. Last week left you to your own leisurely devices, but now you’re ready to be stirred back into action. Seemingly, the planets have heard your call and readily come to the rescue.

The week signals a communication problem with someone in your immediate circle. Maybe you just can’t see eye to eye on an issue. Listen carefully to their viewpoint. Maybe you don’t stand as far apart as you thought.

A seemingly harmless comment from you may cause offence and you wonder what the fuss is about. Take the time to explain what you meant (or didn’t mean), as your friends or family are not mind readers. All should be forgiven.
