HELLO
As a high-school job, I worked backstage in a theatre. I’d be sweeping an empty stage clean, listening to The Cure on my bright pink Walkman, removing sticky stuff left by gaffer tape (grrr), then a truck would turn up and suddenly a new world appeared around me – a Japanese garden (The Mikado), a small-town US fairground (complete with Guy Pearce, singing Greased Lightning, just after his Home and Away days, *swoon*), or a civil-war ravaged Parisian street (Les Miserables). It really was the special type of magic that set and costume designers (P12) describe in this week’s cover story. There’s a kind of magic, too, Tony Harper says, at Osteria Epoca (P24), and Leanne Edmistone finds some roadtesting a float tank (P30). Tonya Turner explores the homestyle wizardry (P34) of Rhi Kemp – who once worked with a literal magician, David Copperfield. So it’s time to break out your wand, grab your top hat, swirl your velvet cape dramatically over one shoulder, and enjoy this week’s Brisbane News.
THEN & NOW February 17, 1958: Tram tracks once snaked all over Brisbane, including along Queen St. The photo (above) was taken from the Edward St end of what is now Queen Street Mall (left), with the Wintergarden sign visible. Trams stopped running in Brisbane in 1969, and Queen St became a pedestrian-only mall in 1982 between Albert and Edward streets, and to George St in 1988.

Pedalling for a power of good KATIE MATTIN, 34 NOVA106.9FM mornings announcer Not owning a bicycle won’t stop Katie Mattin from joining this year’s Brissie to the Bay bike ride. The ride is the biggest fundraiser for MS Queensland. For Katie, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis eight years ago, it is not just an opportunity to raise money for research into a cure but to present herself as a positive role model. She recalls that when she found out she had MS, she immediately jumped on the internet and became overwhelmed with stories of worst-case scenarios. “I had that feeling of desperation to see someone who was getting on with life and who was okay,” she says. “So I really wanted someone else – even if it was just one person, if they are diagnosed tomorrow – to go, ‘Oh that girl from the radio, she has MS but she is still working and she seems to be doing okay.’ It gives them some hope.” The Brissie to the Bay has five courses to suit different fitness levels: a 25km ride to Balmoral, a 50km ride to Wynnum, a 100km trip to Wellington Point and Cleveland and a 160km Classic. But Katie and her twin daughters, Amelia and Holly, 8, plus her Nova boss, Jay Walkerden, are opting for the cruisy 10km ride along the riverside. Jay, Amelia and Holly all have their own wheels but Katie will have to borrow a bike – which might, in part, explain her lack of preparation. “I’m not super fit,” she says. “I don’t go to the gym every day. I try to do as little as possible but still stay healthy. What I like about this ride is you don’t have to be a cyclist. You can do the 100km if you want to but if you want to make it a family fun ride then 10km is not too strenuous, anyone can do it and it is a really pretty ride along the river.”
That girl from the radio, she has MS but she seems to be doing okay
The 27th MS Brissie to the Bay bike ride is on Sun, Jun 18, leaving from Musgrave Park. brissietothebay.com.au

LIFE
Belinda Seeney I’d only intended to scamper quickly on to the roof for a brief reconnaissance mission As far as patterns go, it was striking in its simplicity. Delicate white lines set against a blossoming pink background, radiating out from a narrow concave midsection, reminiscent of a skeletal butterfly. As far as sunburns go, it was striking in its brutality. The delicate lines were the result of intricately crisscrossed straps across the back of my yoga top. The vivid pink skin was due to an unscheduled ascension to the roof for a spot of gardening. Yoga and gardening – two pursuits I never thought I’d get mixed up in but hey, life is full of surprises. I’d only intended to scamper quickly on to the roof for a brief reconnaissance mission. For the past week, I’d been woken before sunrise every morning by persistent scratching sounds emanating from the roof. In the silence of a pre-dawn morning, tempered by the thick
darkness only a moonless night brings, and exercising the level of logic particular to a week of broken sleep, I arrived at the only possible explanations for the mysterious scratching. It was either a serial killer methodically gouging his way through the ceiling with a bloodied butcher’s knife or a bird of pterodactyl proportions sharpening its beak – and no doubt, claws – on the roof tiles. There was no way either threat would catch me napping so, once the ominous scratching stopped and the sun blushed pink on the horizon, I pulled my weary body from its pillow fort, threw on some activewear and headed to an early-morning yoga class to calm my mind and formulate a plan of attack. Emboldened by the glorious warrior pose, the bright light of day and a litre or so of coffee, I retrieved my rickety aluminium ladder and headed skyward to investigate. What I discovered, as I stood
ankle-deep in downed tree branches, was a roof that had not escaped storm season lightly. I noted with jealous admiration that more verdant foliage grew from my gutters and drainpipes than in my carefully tended garden beds. My sneaky roof recon quickly became an all-out assault as I attacked the roof with every weapon in my arsenal – namely a stiff-bristled broom and secateurs. Time flies when you’re no longer fearful of axe murderers or extinct predators and before I knew it, the ground was coated in twigs, leaves, seed pods, branches, tennis balls and even a dog’s chew toy. Sadly, by the time I was done, my back was also a canvas for the vivid strokes of the sun. The early-morning scraping stopped, which was a blessing at first, but a few days later, despite the liberal application of lotion, my burnt back began to itch with a ferocity I needed a pterodactyl’s talons to relieve.
I’m a news junkie which is all well and good unless I’m on holidays and trying to relax. On our recent trip to Thailand I made the mistake of turning on the BBC World News one morning to see reports of American ships steaming towards North Korea. This sort of sabre-rattling worries me and I spent the whole day concerned that Kim Jong-un might try and lob a ballistic missile our way in retaliation for us being allies of the Americans. Okay, so I wasn’t at home but I was still worried. We were at Hua Hin at the time, a lovely seaside resort town which is the preferred destination of Thai royalty. The king of Thailand has two palaces there – one which is a heritage site and another which is still in use. I read about this a couple of years ago and decided I had to go there. We had only just arrived when I watched the news report that ruined my day. Wandering around the Hua Hin Market Village shopping centre I had a long face to say the least.
“What’s the matter with you?” my wife asked. “Bloody North Korea,” I said. I spent the entire day in a state of high anxiety and decided to try to give the news a miss for the next few days. Watching the news is not good for me on holidays. I had another incident two years ago when we were in Hawaii on
Phil Brown
I watched the news report that ruined my day holidays. We had just arrived and, after putting on my fluffy hotel robe and slippers, I switched on the news to see a CNN weather report about a hurricane heading for the Hawaiian Islands. It was due to hit in a few days’ time, just as we were flying out, and that sent me into a panic. That morning we had breakfast with the hotel PR lady. I grilled her about the hurricane but she was no meteorologist. I worried all that day
and half the next until it became apparent that the hurricane had fizzled out. Then all was right with the world again. Shunning the news in Thailand recently meant I also shunned weather reports. I once saw a program about anxious flyers that suggested we should never look at weather reports before we fly. I get that. We had terrible weather on our flight to Bangkok with storms over Indonesia and I hoped the same wouldn’t happen on the way home. I did inadvertently catch sight of a weather map while changing channels and didn’t think I saw any major low pressure systems, which was a relief. I was still worried about North Korea though until we got home and then I saw the reports that Kim Jongun’s latest ballistic missile had fizzled like that Hawaiian hurricane. That made me feel better. And I’m back watching the news again.

ARNAVAZ LINDSAY When her teachers at the London College of Fashion suggested she specialise in theatre and costume design, Arnavaz Lindsay was shocked. The Taringa designer had barely been to the theatre growing up in Brisbane and was in London to study haute couture. But not only did she fall in love with the costume industry, she discovered her life’s passion. “It was exciting to have this whole new world opening before me,” she says. “Costume design is about your imagination and the endless possibilities. “Fashion is hard because it is about following trends, and you have to sacrifice your creativity, but now I’m spoiled because I can mix the two worlds together.” A fan of Jean-Paul Gaultier and the late Alexander McQueen, Arnavaz enjoys collaborating with people who are willing to take risks. “What I love about theatre is the spontaneity and the problemsolving,” says Arnavaz, 36, who served as costumier on many productions including Queensland Theatre Company’s Elizabeth (2012) and the Queensland Ballet’s Cinderella (2012). She has also enjoyed working with Brisbane independent company
DESIGN FOR LIFE … Arnavaz Lindsay.
Danger Ensemble’s recent production of Macbeth. She says artistic director Steven Mitchell Wright was open to ideas, such as Arnavaz’s plan to use furs (left) and sequined fabrics as well as non-traditional plastic (for the witches’ bodices) and laser lights from her local hardware shop. “I like to push boundaries and to create an experience for the audience. “I like working with materials that are not normally used for costuming.” After studying costume design in London and Sydney, Arnavaz returned home four years ago. “Theatre is flourishing in Brisbane,” she says. “There is worldclass talent and there are more people coming to Brisbane and bringing their experiences.”
MATERIAL WORLD ... Anthony Spinaze in his busy work space.
ANTHONY SPINAZE Even as a child, the magic of theatre fascinated Anthony Spinaze. But it wasn’t until scoring his first job – painting sets – that it became an obsession. The Highgate Hill expert is now resident designer at Queensland Theatre Company, creating sets and costumes for stage productions. “It was while painting the sets that the mystery of how they worked was revealed,” he says. “It got to the point I wanted to make my own sets.” So Anthony completed a degree in fine arts, followed by three years studying costume and set design at NIDA in Sydney. He was in his final year at NIDA when QTC tapped him to design the production of Switzerland. Soon after
he became the company’s first-ever resident designer and worked on productions including the hit play Constellations, last year’s St Mary’s In Exile, as well as youth ensemble shows and other projects. “My main interest is telling a story,” he says. “I love the research, I love sitting down and drawing the images and I love working with a team. When you finally get to see your designs on stage, after months of work, it’s icing on the cake.” Next up for Anthony is Joh for PM, an original musical about former Queensland premier Joh BjelkePetersen, which debuts in July at Brisbane Powerhouse. “It will be a fun challenge because they are all characters people are familiar with,” he says.
ON POINTE ... Anne Tytherleigh with Queensland Ballet company artist Mia Heathcote.
ANNE TYTHERLEIGH When it comes to ballet costumes, Swan Lake tutus are the ultimate in grace and beauty. So it’s not surprising that when Anne Tytherleigh made her first tutu 20 years ago, when her daughter Brooke started ballet as a three year old, it was the Swan Lake version she turned to for inspiration. The then-beauty therapist, artist and passionate home sewer had no inkling this first project would lead to a career as a tutu couture specialist. Now Anne, 44, of Bellmere near Caboolture, is part of the Queensland Ballet wardrobe team responsible for
creating or refurbishing the most tutus ever used in one production by that company, for next month’s Swan Lake. Up to 25 tutus will be on stage at one time in the Ben Stevensonchoreographed version, showing at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre from May 5. “It’s the best job in the world,” says Anne, whose Australian Ballet School-trained daughter, now 22, recently spent two years dancing at Universal Studios in Japan. “I had never thought about making tutus as a career so I should thank my daughter for going to ballet classes,” she says.

I think we question why we do things, and I don’t think we should.
What’s new with you? At the moment at (business consultancy) Rowe Advisory we’re really focusing on oil, gas and mining projects. I’ve been working in the oil, gas and mining industry for the past 27 years (in other roles). It really started with working in the UK at a seismic company that gave me the “bug”. It was also the fact that there weren’t a lot of females in the industry. There’s a lot of strength in being unique.
Who or what inspires you? I’ve actually got some pretty amazing people around me all the time – very senior females, CEOs and board members who are very accessible. I’m very fortunate there. I also have fantastic males around me – it’s important to have that balance. My family’s been pretty amazing. They’re very commercial, a large pastoral family – they own lots of properties and a big company. Watching their business grow into what it did always made me wonder what was possible.

What is your greatest achievement? Taking the plunge out of a corporate environment. You can measure success in whichever way you like, but for me, it was that I backed myself. I didn’t sit at home and wait for opportunities to happen. I’m far more confident, giving it a go and loving it – 90 per cent of the time. As a female,

Sense of belonging Fiona Purdon Chenoa Deemal lives out of a suitcase, but the former Brisbane resident says she could not be happier. Ever since graduating from QUT in 2014, Chenoa has been too busy working and touring to have planted firm roots anywhere for too long. “I am living the dream,” she says. Chenoa is back, staying with friends at Bray Park – briefly – while preparing to star in the awardwinning one-woman play The 7 Stages of Grieving, at the Gardens Theatre, on May 4 and 5. Then she’ll be off again, taking the Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe and Queensland Theatre co-production on a national tour and then to London’s Origins Festival in June. The 55-minute show was written by former QTC artistic director Wesley Enoch and stage and screen star Deborah Mailman. It follows the journey of an Aboriginal “everywoman” as she tells poignant and humorous stories of grief and reconciliation against the backdrop of indigenous Australian racism battles, deaths in custody and the complex issue of land rights. Grin and Tonic artistic director Jason Klarwein and Chenoa gained permission from Wesley to add
several new jokes and for Chenoa to use her own indigenous language (Guugu Yimithirr, from north Queensland). “It’s such an amazing gift to do this show. It is an Australian classic and it is still relevant today. There is even mention of Pauline Hanson,” she says. Chenoa, 32, grew up in the small community at the remote Cape Flattery Silica Mines, 220km north of Cairns, and completed primary school by distance education. Every year the class of up to 12 children performed plays for miners and families. “I loved it, it helped me to feel I was good at something. I felt I belonged on stage because I was a shy kid,” Chenoa says. She then went to an Atherton Tablelands boarding school before moving to the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts at Kangaroo Point for three years. While she was an undergraduate at QUT, Jason watched her acclaimed 2013 performance in QTC’s Mother Courage and was so impressed he later picked her for 7 Stages. GOOD AS EVER ... Petula Clark.
Playing downtown Hannah Davies She is the first to admit she’s no ordinary grandmother. Petula Clark, 84, is a Grammy Award-winner who has sung with Frank Sinatra, danced with Fred Astaire and shared a bed with John Lennon. Heading here in May for the first time in three years as part of her Australian tour, the singer dubbed the First Lady of the British Invasion is looking forward to sharing tracks from her new album, From Now On, as well as some old favourites. “It’s a great country and I always have great audiences,” she says. Known for 60s hits such as Downtown and My Love, Petula started as a child entertaining troops on BBC radio during World War II. Her career spans seven decades. Today Petula promises her voice is as sweet as ever. “At the end of the day what matters is the songs, a good engineer and the voice. That’s it,” she says. “One day I will give up singing and retire and I hope I do that gracefully.” In the meantime, Petula travels the world for work and pleasure. “I like being a grandmother but I’m not a normal grandmother. I don’t see them often enough, but they know I am a working grandmother and I suppose they must find that amusing.” When travelling she often bumps into old friends such as Paul McCartney or Grace Jones at airports. And she’s a fan of modern celebrities including Adele and Ed Sheeran. “There are so many good singers around today,” she says. SHADOW PLAY … Noel McKenna’s Tricycle Shadow (Brisbane memory 1964); Jubilee Hall, Annerley, Brisbane; Australian Grotesque D; Cat on a Fence.
Boy’s own works of whimsy GALLERIES Phil Brown When artist Noel McKenna thinks of Brisbane he has mixed feelings. The ambiguity of his memories is reflected in the title of his latest exhibition at Heiser Gallery in Fortitude Valley: Australian Grotesque. A number of the pieces feature kitsch items such as tyres that have been turned into garden decorations. Swan Tyre and Australian Grotesque: Black tyre swan both feature such kitsch, as does Australian Grotesque D which includes a questionably decorative kangaroo. These works are based on things Noel has seen on visits back to Brisbane, his hometown until he was 23. Now based in Sydney, he grew up at West End and went to school at St James College in Spring Hill. His work is tinged with ambivalence for a very good reason.
“I would say I was an unhappy child,” Noel says with more than a modicum of candour. “I was quite depressed living here. After school I did a year of architecture at UQ. “They more or less told me to leave because my drawings were too messy. They sort of suggested I go to art school.” Which he did. At the Queensland College of Art he found his true calling and has built a national and international reputation since then with shows in commercial galleries that eventually led to solo exhibitions in institutional spaces including the exhibition Somewhere in the city: Noel McKenna at QUT Art Museum in 2005. Noel, 60, has also held solo exhibitions abroad and is a regular finalist in the Wynne and Sulman Prizes at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He won the coveted Sulman Prize in 1994.
In recent years his hometown has crept back into his work and he mines his own memory and seeks motifs that help reflect that. In this exhibition, Tricycle shadow (Brisbane memory 1964) and Tricycle shadow with cat (Brisbane memory 1964) are the most distinctly nostalgic works. “That’s me riding my tricycle with a little cat in the background,” Noel says. “We had a lot of stray cats in our street and I used to feed them so they liked me. I love doing cats.” His works display a sense of whimsy as well as a nostalgia tinged with a sense of sadness.

Sally Browne Rockabilly culture is in full swing. A whole generation of devotees have turned themselves into a tribute to a time when Elvis and Johnny Cash ruled the airwaves, dresses were wideskirted and cars were very, very cool. On April 29, fans will converge on the Hamilton Hotel for the fourth annual Rods and Rockabilly Festival. Vintage stylist and model Bettie Butcher, who will MC the festival, says her love of rockabilly began about 10 years ago when her partner, Rastra Lyall, a metal sculptor who manages the Rods and Rockabilly art show, introduced her to the subculture. “My dad’s a panel beater so I always grew up around cars but around 10 years ago my partner took me to (another festival) Greazefest and while I was there a gentleman asked if he could take my photo with a hot rod and that ended up getting published in a magazine.” Since then she has appeared in a number of magazines and won pin-up titles including Miss Ink Australia and Miss Pinup at The Sydney Tattoo and Body Art Expo 2010. These days it takes about 45 minutes to create her look, but when she works with clients she usually leaves an hour each for hair and make-up. She teaches workshops at the Bombshell Beauty Academy in Brisbane and recently launched her own styling line. “Rockabilly is a genre that crosses over into many areas which is why it’s really accessible to so many,” she says. “It’s country, it’s rock ‘n’ roll, it’s punk, it’s goth.” Cars are a big part of the subculture. Joel Archard drives a 1927 Ford Model T coupe. “I bought the body in bits and pieces over about a year and a half and built the chassis and put the whole thing together,” he says. “Plenty of modifications.” He also works on cars for other people at Deathwish Hot Rods on the

Gold Coast, named after his car, which these days is his daily driver. “There will be a couple I would have worked on at the festival,” he says. “I like seeing the different stuff that people are doing. I’d rather look at someone else’s work than mine.” A hot rod is generally any pre-1950 model that has been customised for speed and looks. It became popular in the 1950s when young people could get affordable older cars to soup up to their hearts content. “A lot of stuff started after the Second World War when not everyone had a lot of money,” says Joel. “They would race the cars and
modify them, pull the guards off and put bigger engines in and get them super low to race around. It started from that and hasn’t stopped. “I go to the car shows more for mateship than the cars,” he says.
“There’s a lot of good guys and girls that go to a whole lot of events. It’s more of a hangout thing for me.” He’s seen many cars which claim to be hot rods on the road but unless they meet certain conditions, they don’t make the cut, he says. And customising the car is where the fun is. “The whole point of it is to have something that no one else has,” he says. “Whether you’re into cars or not if you see one on the road you smile.” Rods and Rockabilly Festival 2017, Hamilton Hotel, Hamilton, Apr 29, noon5pm, free. 18+ Rock On Party 6pm, $10

Standing on ceremony FILM Vicky Roach TABLE 19 (M) hhh Director: Jeffrey Blitz Starring: Anna Kendrick, Lisa Kudrow, Wyatt Russell Running time: 87 minutes Due to an unfortunately-timed breakup with the brother-of-the-bride, Eloise (Anna Kendrick) has been unceremoniously demoted to the outermost fringes of her oldest friend’s wedding. What this says about her former bestie’s loyalty is confounding enough to warrant a movie of its own . But the concrete result of the abrupt and definitive change in the seating arrangement, for Eloise (pictured), is social ostracism.
Stuck at the table closest to the toilets, the former maid of honour finds herself struggling to make smalltalk with the wedding’s rejects, misfits and also-rans. Bereft and embittered, her already-sharp tongue slices through the conversation like a mandoline. Table 19, she informs her fellow diners, is for people who should have known better than to RSVP.
BERLIN SYNDROME (MA15+) hhh Director: Cate Shortland Starring: Teresa Palmer, Max Riemelt, Matthias Habich Running Time: 116 minutes Before Sunrise, with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, filtered the holiday romance through an exquisite, rosycoloured lens. Berlin Syndrome is the nightmare alternative, a dark and cautionary tale for young women travelling alone. A fan of East German architecture, Clare (Palmer) has somewhat impulsively thrown in her job as a photographer for a Brisbane real estate firm and bought herself a plane ticket to Berlin. Clare crosses paths with the wrong guy. Smart, charming and very European, Andi (Riemelt) shows no outward signs of being damaged goods. After a chance encounter outside a secondhand bookstore, the two strangers spend the day together exploring the city (as Hawke and Delpy did in Vienna). Their transitory, might-have-been connection changes gear when Clare decides not to travel on to the next town the following day as she had originally planned. As soon as the handsome young
couple consummate their attraction, the extent of Andi’s psychopathology begins to emerge. After he leaves for work the next morning, Clare discovers all the doors and windows of his immaculatelystyled apartment have been sealed and the SIM card in her mobile phone removed. In the course of Clare’s long and increasingly traumatic incarceration, the power dynamic of the couple’s relationship shifts and mutates. Vicky Roach
This includes the bride’s former nanny (June Squibb), an indefatigable optimist who has been trying extremely hard not to acknowledge that her former charges have barely registered her presence; Lisa Kudrow’s delightfully droll diner-owner Bina and her husband Jerry (Craig Robinson), Rezno (Tony Revolori), a student who is thinks he has a better
chance of scoring a date at a wedding than he does at his senior prom, and the bride’s possibly institutionalised uncle, Walter (Stephen Merchant). As the champagne flows, the speeches digress and the karaoke kicks in, these outsiders form their own little fraternity in the time-honoured tradition of such comedies, although this one has a more independentminded, almost misanthropic edge. While the material is uneven, and the tone at times discordant, the talented bunch find unexpected patterns and textures as they work against the grain. The longer you spend with the motley bunch at Table 19, the more they grow on you. Now showing

Budding star puts magic on the plate RESTAURANT Tony Harper Osteria Epoca could, with more time and effort, be something of a mecca for Yeronga diners. It hovers on the edge of excellence but problems lie with the service. There’s a staff of willing, eager, engaging and delightful young folk who don’t appear to follow any system. OK, one young lady seems to have her finger on the pulse but she’s a single spoke in a broken wheel. Experience and training will fix things in a flash. Let’s take it from the start. It’s Easter Saturday night and we follow Siri’s directions through suburban Yeronga to a brightly lit corner housing two restaurants. Ours looks the slicker – split over three levels: deli at the top, dining room and attached courtyard in the middle, salumi and drinks bar plus kitchen at the bottom. The fitout is fresh, slick and promising. Our booking is there and our table of four is waiting … with three place settings. I’m happy to sit and see how long it takes for someone to notice I’m bereft of plate, napkin and silverware. They don’t, ever. Drinks, no problem: delicious, in good stemware and sourced from a really smart selection. Menus arrive and we contemplate. It’s a suburban restaurant without a kids menu? Ah well. An entree arrives … not ours. We order – baccala ($18), charred

veal tongue ($18), fried gnocchi bread ($8) and crocchette ($12). I’m keen for the vitello tonnato ($26, my favourite Italian dish of all) but it’s off the menu tonight. Damn. Things begin to arrive – fried gnocchi first and it’s very, very good, like a sort of Italianesque bao. I still have no plate, napkin or cutlery, but my drink (Osteria flaming rum punch) is keeping me happy. I manage without cutlery. Next is the veal tongue. My God, it
is amazing, ridiculously good. A big slab of very, very tender tongue, finished over the char grill, perched on a bed of eschalot puree, cubes of pickled baby beetroot and balsamic. Even the kids rate it; I’m besotted. Still no plate, napkin or cutlery (by now I’ve mentioned the fact). My drink is gone and I’m patiently counting how long until someone offers me a second. Crocchettes and baccala are good – harder to eat without utensils – but

PM Les Bubbles, Fortitude Valley
Brownie aficionados go to Dello Mano, the Harry Potter-esque shop of delights in the city and, now, New Farm. These squares of heaven ($4.50, $6 for two) have a fan base that includes Oprah Winfrey and Ashton Kutcher. Go for caramelised macadamia, coconut and lime, peanut butter or the classic luxury brownie. Or, get your day off to a sweet start with its handmade chocolate granola ($8.50). Sinful.
In a former illegal casino and brothel, Les Bubbles offers a slice of Paris with reminders of Queensland’s murky past. The menu has one main: steak frites, with premium grass-fed beef, sauce and bottomless fries ($34.95 dinner, $24.95 lunch). Desserts feature locally made Mister Fitz’s Finest Ice Cream. Talking points include a pink neon sign saying, “We regret to inform you we are no longer a brothel – management”.

not in the heavenly league of the tongue. Then it’s mains – porchetta ($36), pappardelle with oxtail ragout ($22, a tad oily but bloody delicious) and a titan-size crumbed veal with radicchio salad (cotoletta, $32). I give up and ask for wine, utensils and plate (three times for the utensils, the napkin never appears). Despite it all, I like the place. It is a terrific room with very good food, loads of atmosphere and a willing team. It merely needs finessing.

WHY QUALITY MATTERS
“Did you know that approximately 1 in 8 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime?“ “I know I need a mammogram but does it really matter where you go? I thought all mammograms are the same?” No – breast imaging is a subspecialty in radiology and some mammograms are better than others. difw has been the private breast imaging provider of choice in Brisbane since 1998, under the care of Dr Paula Sivyer, our founding radiologist. Dr Sivyer’s reputation in breast imaging is unsurpassed in Queensland and she has trained a team of dedicated imaging professionals who share her passion for providing breast imaging that is a cut above the industry standard.
Our better breast imaging experience includes: • no waiting list • same day results • 3D mammography available • all referrals accepted • ave appointment time 1.5 to 2 hours (imaging only, assumes no biopsy).
We compare imaging year after year, thanks to our large digital data archive, so you know the subtlest changes in breast tissue are logged and assessed. We provide results on the day, so you don’t have to worry.

Float away ROAD TEST Leanne Edmistone Stepping naked into the warm, salted water inside the giant space-age pod, I can’t help recalling the great 1985 movie Cocoon. Flitting through my brain are visions of three old men running across a grassy back yard to sneak into a neighbour’s pool which, unknown to them, contains aliens hibernating in cocoons. Every time the seniors swim in the pool – dodging the large barnacleencrusted rocks – they absorb some of the benign aliens’ life force, leaving them feeling younger, fitter and healthier than ever before. Hell, it even cured one bloke’s cancer. There are no aliens and no cancercuring claims, but Beyond Rest, at Coorparoo, offers a similarly rejuvenating experience – indeed, the publicity material says “being in a float tank is like relaxing in outer space”. James and Melanie Greenwood were inspired to open Brisbane’s first Beyond Rest clinic, after James, who has a long corporate career, was converted to the relaxation experience during a trip to Perth. Each private room contains a shower, the small car-size pod (pictured with a model, right), towels and toiletries. Guests are encouraged to shower, don the provided ear plugs and then step into the pod to spend an hour floating in complete darkness and silence. It’s hoped the experience encourages a complete emptying of the mind and body relaxation. More than 500kg of Epsom salts means no effort is needed to float and the 35.5C

water temperature is skin-receptor neutral, which means you lose track of where your body ends and the water begins. The water is filtered and cleaned each session. Links from Beyond Rest’s website outline the physical and spiritual benefits of floating, which have been studied for more than 50 years. The day I visit the Coorparoo clinic, a young woman emerges visibly refreshed, while another purchases a gift voucher for a friend. On hand to introduce me to floating, Melanie says the clinic has been popular with a diverse clientele. Uncomfortable in confined spaces, I am reassured that the pod is very roomy – I can barely touch the sides
when stretched out, and there is more than enough room to sit up with the lid closed. Melanie demonstrates how easy it is to lift the lid and says some people find it just as effective to float with the lid ajar. The water temperature is perfect, floating no effort and the calming music signalling the start of my session (and later, the end) a great way to ease into the experience. Still, I find it difficult to switch off

my busy mind: what groceries do I need, when is that work deadline again, I forgot to get Master 9 a new pair of pants, and oh, go away, you pesky Cocoon stars – and fully embrace the experience. 3232 WINTER RACING CARNIVAL: ADVERTISING FEATURE
Spotlight on state The 2017 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival kicked off this month in Toowoomba’s Clifford Park racecourse, providing a platform for the next wave of stars to shine. With 12 weeks of black type racing in southeast Queensland, intertwined with the best of what country racing has to offer in all corners of the state, and in addition to winter carnivals for both the harness and greyhound codes, Racing Queensland’s mantra of ‘We’re Racing Everywhere’ is a fitting one. Racing Queensland’s CEO Eliot Forbes says winter racing is a time the national spotlight focuses on Queensland. The state in the winter becomes a melting pot of the best horses, trainers and jockeys from all over Australia and New Zealand. The jewel in the crown of the
carnival, which also takes in meetings at Ipswich and the Gold and Sunshine coasts, is the $1.5 million UBET Stradbroke Handicap, an event which is the culmination of five successive Saturdays of Group 1 racing at Doomben and Eagle Farm. The carnival continues into the Winter Cup on July 6 and all the way through to the Nationals, which this year will be run at Albion Park on August 25. In harness racing, the Mother’s Day BOTRA Charity Race Day is a fun packed event on May 14.

34AT HOME
A gypsy’s

HOME COMFORTS ... Rhi Kemp's home is full of assorted curios. Picture: Josh Woning
The magic of home decorating comes naturally to Rhi Kemp. In a former life, Rhi worked closely with magician David Copperfield, managing his luxury island resort and private getaway, Musha Cay, in the Bahamas and prior to that spent six years managing hotels across Africa. Renovating, decorating and “making sure everything looked amazing” were all part of the job, skills Rhi has now brought to her Toowong home shared with husband Nicholas and daughters Cordelia, 6, and Harriet, 5. Lovingly decorated with family heirlooms, op shop finds and items collected during their travels, the Kemp home is a comfy, friendly and stylish place. Originally from Cardiff, Wales, Rhi moved to Australia eight years ago, first to the Gold Coast and then Brisbane where she and Nicholas set up their business The Leg Vein Doctor in 2011. They moved into their house three years ago, drawn to its quiet position at the bottom of a hill overlooking a creek bed surrounded by rainforest. “It’s rare to find little pockets like this now so much is getting built out,”
she says. They renovated the kitchen soon after moving in, keeping the same layout but transforming it into a stylish country cottage kitchen. “The people who built the house had really great style and we’ve kept all the fixtures,” she says. “The kitchen was really nicely laid out but it was just falling to pieces.” They also incorporated a mottled antique mirror splashback that reflects the trees. Another addition was a bigger island bench with seating. “It’s really handy with the kids. They sit up there to do homework and Play-Doh and craft and painting and eat dinner,” she says. Along with her wealth of hotel and resort management experience, Rhi’s family heritage has played a part in fostering her love of collecting beautiful things. Her grandfather was an antiques dealer and many items around the home have been passed down through the family. “A lot of things I collect because my dad collected them,” she says, pulling out Gaudy Welsh pottery from the kitchen cabinets as a case in point. After admitting defeat in keeping cut flowers in vases around the home,

Rhi turned to bright bouquets of potted blooms instead. They need watering or spraying every day, and although Rhi loses about 50 per cent of whatever she is trying to grow, it’s worth the extra effort to have flowers in the home on a regular basis. “In the UK cut flowers last a long time but here they have to be potted ones. I like the colour and I think it’s nice to have something living,” she says. Colour is important to Rhi, and not just with flowers. Everything from patterned cushions, lamps and rugs to multicoloured sofas and artwork add a sense of fun to the home. “It’s handy loving colour and
patterns. They can take a beating from the children with coloured pens and the dogs too. If they were all one colour you’d tend to notice it more.” Wallpaper and feature walls are also big on Rhi’s list, with almost every room in the house having its own design. She often sources the wallpaper from eBay to get something unique but calls in the professionals to put it on the walls. “We’re on first-name terms with our wallpaper guy now,” she says. Even a narrow strip of wall in the dining room hasn’t escaped Rhi’s wallpaper obsession, with a row of printed owls sitting just below the
QBCC 1201499
ceiling and overlooking the room. A striking Victorian iron chandelier in the dining room was bought at an estate sale. The same goes for the cupboard under the stairs, affectionately called the “Harry Potter room”, which has its own horse wallpaper. Cordelia and Harriet share a bedroom upstairs, which is decorated with wallpaper patterned with birds and branches. Across the hall, Rhi had the frosted glass window in their bathroom custom-made to read “rub a dub dub two girls in a tub”. It’s a playful home with surprises at every turn keeping the magic alive.

CITY LIGHTS ... This award-winning entertaining area makes the most of amazing views; the pool has a window edge and the pergola adds to the area’s sense of space.
Higher ground Tonya Turner Designing and building this awardwinning garden on a steep site in inner-city Paddington was no mean feat for Brisbane landscape designer and builder Alistair Hutton of A&R Evergreen landscaping. “The block sloped quite dramatically and had amazing views that weren’t being captured,” he says. The block was levelled using a 4m retaining wall, making way for a pool with a window edge for unobstructed city views.
• Call today 1300 137 081 suncoastoutdoorliving.com.au •
The design includes a vertical garden, custom-made fire bowl, bar ledge and cantilevered pergola with ironbark columns, adjustable aluminium louvres, in-built barbecue and a bench seat made with a solid cut block of travertine slab that has a stone clad wall behind and firewood storage underneath. Alistair says a cantilevered pergola is a smart way to increase the sense of space in an outdoor area. “By not having extra posts in the ground you open up views even more and maximise yard space,” he says.
Patio and Pool Enclosures Pool Safe Screens
Mansoa alliacea (garlic vine) was planted to climb the structure creating a “living pergola”. “It softens it rather than having all hard edges,” Alistair says. A staircase also runs down the left of the pool to an edible garden, which
puts every bit of available space to good use. Created on a budget of $350,000, the garden won the Design and Construct category in the Landscape Queensland Construction Excellence Awards 2016. mylandscapedesign.com.au

38 RECIPE
Pride in produce Alastair McLeod This dish could be renamed “Love Letter to the Lockyer”; so enamoured am I of the region’s potatoes, brassicas, celery, leafy greens, tomatoes and the famed Mulgowie corn. It makes me smile that the Valley’s corn enjoys two peak seasons: spring and summer. Strip away the husk, scorch on a barbecue and enjoy anointed with a flavoured butter – citrus, garlic and miso are favourites. Early in the
season local baby corn is far superior to the desiccated product we see air freighted from far away. Some Lockyer products I encourage you to seek out are Emmo’s goats cheese, Mormor Food’s stock concentrates made using Lockyer vegetables, and toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Ghost Gully in Gatton produces salad greens that have caught the eye of Neil Perry who uses them at his Burger Project in South Brisbane. That’s worth writing home about.
Salad of baby corn with zucchini, goats curd and toasted seeds INGREDIENTS 3 tbs extra virgin olive oil 4 medium zucchinis, spiralised 12 baby corn cobs, husks removed Sea salt & freshly milled pepper 4 tbs goats curd 1.5 tbs toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds Small handful of salad greens
Mustard dressing 1/2 lemon, juice and zest 3 tbs extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp grain mustard Sea salt & freshly milled pepper
Don’t be tempted to season while cooking otherwise the zucchini will go soggy. Meanwhile, preheat another medium pan over high heat and saute the baby corn with the remaining oil until golden, then season. Dressing: Combine juice, zest, oil and mustard in a jam jar and shake vigorously. Season to taste. To serve: Toss zucchini in a bowl with some of the dressing and season to taste. Spread goats curd on plates and arrange zucchini on top. Strew with seeds and leaves and arrange corn alongside. Serves 4.
Method Picture: Ric Frearson Styling: Lyndel Miller
Preheat large frying pan over high heat. Swirl in half the oil. Toss in spiralised zucchini and saute for 2 minutes, ensuring it remains firm.

40 MARKET WATCH
Question time ANTONIA MERCORELLA REIQ Knowing what to ask your real estate agent will help when buying or selling property. It will allow you to recognise your real estate agent’s abilities and know if they are going to be able to successfully help you. Be sure to ask what experience they have in selling homes in your area at the same price point, and what sales data can they present to showcase their skills. Average days on market data reveals how quickly an agent can sell a house. Ask them to provide testimonials and/or referrals from previous clients, and check whether they are a member of the REIQ. The latter will give you confidence that they have kept their skills updated. Keep in mind that there are some questions that are better directed elsewhere. For instance, real estate agents can’t advise on return on
investment, gearing, potential yield, or how quickly your mortgage could be paid off. You need to speak with a financial adviser or an accountant for that information. There is a growing trend for Australians to set up Self-Managed Superannuation Funds and to use the SMSF to invest in property. An Australian financial services licence is required when making recommendations or statements of opinion to a person to use an SMSF to invest in property. What you can ask is what the rental property has been rented for or data on past capital growth of the property. It is also tempting to seek legal advice from a real estate agent. In Queensland, real estate agents are allowed to facilitate contracts for the sale of real estate, but you will need the services of a solicitor for the transfer of the property and/or any legal issues relating to the sale.
BIG PICTURE … A real estate agent can only answer some of your property questions.

Horoscope with Tanya Obreza LIBRA
TAURUS
(September 23 - October 23) The problem with being different is that not everyone understands you, and most people generally prefer to deal with what they know. This means that some Librans may feel on the outer for the moment. If that’s you, trust your instincts anyway. You’re just ahead of the times. Push on patiently.
(April 21-May 20) To say that you have had a better time in relationships would be an understatement. If you feel you have been wronged, you should stand your ground. Here is your chance to scissor any frayed relationships or, alternatively, go about mending them. The choice, as they say, is yours.
SCORPIO
GEMINI
LEO
(May 21-June 21) Face it, Gemini, it’s money, and how well we handle it that plays a big part in our daily lives. And right now you probably have a few leaks in the financial pool. Happily, extra capital comes from surprising sources – and they are generous ones at that.
(July 23-August 23) You need to sort out what is fact and what’s not, especially if someone is spreading unkind rumours. At the best of times, gossip doesn’t do anyone any favours – and the backlash can be ugly. In any case, it’s beneath the dignity of truthloving Leos.
CANCER
VIRGO
(June 22-July 22) Life-changing experiences can come from many avenues. Perhaps something or someone has been a catalyst for change, and you’re forced to rethink life. Use this experience to trash old rules and regimes. Perhaps it’s time to start anew. You are author of your own destiny.
(August 24-September 22) Definitely a Virgo kind of week. The planets power into top gear and take you along for the ride. You’re encouraged to work on intuition, with few questions asked. How wonderful to be able to act on ideas, without your usual procrastination. Love also features.
(October 24 - November 22) You often keep others guessing, assuming that if someone cares enough they will either know your mind or will ask the right questions. This week is different. You volunteer information, minus the sugarcoating and clever word play. That is both refreshing, and appreciated.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Until family problems are sorted, nothing will make much sense. This week’s planets remind you that charity begins at home. Your desire to make a mark on the world is admirable, but first you must give your full attention to a troubling situation at home.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Love may not offer an entirely smooth ride, with some days being just plain scratchy. Should a relationship end, head towards the
exit sign knowing it’s for the best. Happier moments, though, could see some Capricorns in the arms of a new suitor. How delightful.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) Unbridled is probably how to best describe this week. With passions reeling between agony and ecstasy, you are on something resembling an emotional bender. And this can only mean that you are ready to offload a fair few of those inhibitions. The outcome of this promises to be spectacular.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Some look to the future. Others live for the day. It is the past that usually gets a bad rap — but not so now. Some feel dewy eyed for love gone by. Amazing, too, how the minute you think of someone, they show up out of the blue. Is that synchronicity, perhaps?
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) The week assaults you with ludicrous demands – enough to test even the most resourceful Aries. Paperwork, bureaucracy and red tape are nightmare enough. There’s also a brimming email in-tray. And that’s just the half of it. You need to prioritise, and delegate. tanyaobreza.com
