02 HELLO Mothers are marvellous, aren’t they? Everybody has one, and no matter if they are just around the corner or more distant, there’s a special place in our heart for our mums. Mine, she’s wonderful. And I hope when my children are adults, they will say that about me. Former radio star Sammy Power certainly seems to think that of hers, farmers’ markets powerhouse Jan Power (P10). And there’s nothing like becoming a mum for the first time, such as fashion designer Gail Sorronda (P5) just has, to see what really matters in life. Author Madonna King (P23) says raising her two daughters showed her that at the top of that priority list should be nurturing a familial relationship that values open communication, particularly when it comes to raising teens. In that spirit of communication, can I openly say that mums do like to be told our children think we are special. Handmade gifts are always a good idea – try Alastair McLeod’s Pink Lady brioche galette (P30). Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday, Mum. And also to that awesome lady I am honoured to call my mother-in-law.
THEN & NOW July 31, 1942: Shoppers line up to buy takeaway alcohol from Stewart’s Home Supply, Burnett Lane, city. This early version of a bottle-o was attached to the Criterion Hotel, since demolished, on George St, and sold house whisky (imported from Scotland) for 15s/3d, which is about $54.50 in today’s money. Burnett Lane is now full of restaurants and street art, as part of a city-wide effort to re-energise laneways.

Baby nurtures grander designs GAIL SORRONDA, 35 Fashion designer For more than a decade Gail Sorronda thrived as one of the city’s leading designers. Now she is enjoying her greatest creation, daughter Juniper. Gail has been surprised that life has become calmer since the January 28 birth. She and husband and business partner Atlas Harwood expected parenthood to bring more stress but the pair have become more patient and better organised. “Juniper has brought out our better side. I feel more centred and grounded. You realise what is important in life and it makes you appreciate things in a gracious way,’’ she says. “Juniper has been very content from the word go. You have those moments that she stops and looks at you and your heart melts. We are totally engrossed with her.’’ Gail has been living “in the baby bubble’’ but she is slowly returning to her designing duties, despite Juniper waking her up at night for feeding. The Filipina-Australian, who has lived in Brisbane since she was in primary school, is known for her black and white creations, worn by celebrities such as Grammy Award-winning singer Lorde. People have sent colourful outfits for Juniper, but the couple prefers white “because she looks like an angel’’. She will design some children’s pieces for her next collection and has designed a smaller version of one of her own favourite outfits for Juniper. Gail, who launched her debut collection at Australian Fashion Week in 2005, has held talks with another Brisbane creative about a collaborative runway show this year. She feels Juniper’s birth is like a new beginning and that she has a new burst of creative energy. “Our work is not just about us now ... we are building something else for her,’’ she says. LIFE
Phil Brown Writers were sitting in front of a screen watching footage of a plate of sausages Someone asked me the other day how I got into this business. Actually, it’s a funny story. So, have I got your attention? I did study for a degree in journalism but found the course so crushingly boring that I dropped out and went to work at a Gold Coast radio station writing excruciating advertisements and jingles. I was thinking of going on with that vocation but changed my mind after an interview at a Brisbane ad agency. At the interview they took me into a room and showed me the sort of work I would be doing. In that room several writers were sitting in front of a screen watching footage of a plate of sausages. They were apparently writing an ad about those sausages. Exciting stuff. I decided to rethink my career as an ad man and retired to the country instead to write poetry and meditate. I stayed with friends in Monto, a small town in Queensland’s Central
and Upper Burnett district. I was meant to be helping my mate, Wayne, cut railway sleepers, believe it or not. He was finishing a university degree by correspondence and cutting sleepers to make ends meet. The idea of working in the bush seemed romantic to me. Unfortunately it soon became apparent that I wasn’t cut out (pardon the pun) for this kind of work. This became clear on my first day on the job when Wayne lifted one end of a sleeper and asked me to lift the other. I couldn't, so that was pretty much that. So it was back to writing poetry and meditating. Then one day that Wayne came back from the local pub and said that the local newspaper editor was looking for a reporter because no one in town would talk to him anymore. It was suggested I might like to go and see the guy about a job because, frankly, I think Wayne and his girlfriend Heather wanted me to get a damn job so I could move out.
Fair enough. So, based on a yearand- a-half of studying journalism with stints of writing for a student newspaper, I went to see the editor of the Burnett Herald and was hired on the spot as their cub reporter. I covered everything from bull sales to CWA meetings, where the scones were the big attraction, and I even covered a local ball at which I learnt to dance The Pride of Erin. I have never danced it since. Eventually I moved into a caravan for a few weeks and then rented an old farmhouse near a piggery at a place called Hurdle Gully. True story. I spent a year in Monto before moving to the big smoke – Rockhampton – to further my career at The Morning Bulletin. And that folks is how I got my start. It’s funny when I look back at it but, being a city slicker, that time living in a small country town was fascinating and memorable. And the scones were excellent.
Belinda Seeney I’ve joined a cult. No, not one of those take-10wives-and-pass-the-Kool-Aid cults. It’s something much, much worse. Almost without realising, I’ve become a card-carrying member of a fitness cult. You know the type. They accost you at every social function, coffee queue and office kitchenette to extol the benefits of their chosen cult with a zeal that borders on mania. They sleep better, weigh less, feel happier, have sharper focus, more friends, a wardrobe full of Lycra – you name it, their cult delivers. They pause only to lean in and fix you with their gimlet-eyed gaze and beseech you to “give it a try – you’ll love it” as you nod, mumble and map an escape route. I, too, have joined the recruitment ranks and it’s the most unlikely of exercises that converted me. I spent much of my adult life deftly and successfully sidestepping the triathlon cult that picked off my
family members one by one. I watched as siblings succumbed to the lure of swim, cycle, run; enlisting their children and friends along their way. I stayed cool on the Bikram yoga craze that consumed my hot and sweaty friends for a fair chunk of 2014. I’ve glided serenely through the choppy waters of stand-up paddleboarding, F45, CrossFit and anything on an exercise bike with nary a splash. The closest I came was a fleeting obsession with Body Combat classes at my local gym, adamant I would become the hybrid Wonder WomanLara Croft hero the world needed. Then I discovered Xtend Barre – a fusion of yoga, pilates and ballet techniques – and my world snapped to attention. I was never a dancer, never a gymnast; to be honest, I lack any natural poise or balance. My co-ordination levels have been likened to those of a drunk baby giraffe. But when I stand at the barre – proud chest, strong abs, feet in first
position – I feel collected, I feel together, I feel graceful, I feel … like I could be a dancer. Sneaking a side-view in the mirror, it’s abundantly clear I don’t look like any of those things but I no longer mind. I’ve even found myself doing things I never imagined. I wake at 5am – on a Saturday – to sneak in a class before the household stirs and I prepare meals in advance so I can duck out for a midweek fix while my family is distracted by dinner. My unwillingness to take direction is the stuff of legend but when Shay or Jess ask me to “plié one inch deeper, lift that back leg one inch higher” I comply unquestioningly. I’ve even found myself bailing up friends, colleagues and complete strangers, fixing them with a wideeyed fervour and imploring them to give it a try. They’ll love it.

your side Markets heir Sammy Power is making the most of life as she happily steps into her mother’s flamboyant shoes
Picture: Ric Frearson
Kristy Symonds Sammy Power is kicking around with an extra hint of sass in her heels. The quirky eighth generation Queenslander and daughter of Jan Power, the doyenne of the state’s farmers’ markets, has just bought royal blue stilettos she can’t afford. With a fabulous flutter of bleachblonde hair, long, glittery talons and sparkling jewels, Sammy kicks her leg out from under the table of her favourite Fortitude Valley lunch spot, Harvey’s Bar and Bistro. “Look at my new shoes – aren’t they great?,” she says. “I shouldn’t have bought these but I say you just get them and work it out later.” PERFECT PARTNERS … Jan and Sammy The whimsy of her acquisition Power with Sammy’s cat Chops Marie. epitomises her attitude to life: “If you want to do something, you just do it. fantastic, it was just very rocky. “My parents had a messy divorce and they still don’t speak. I was taken to England, put in boarding school, and I learnt a lot and travelled the world but Dad and I never got on. I looked too much like my mother and I think it was like a sword in his wound. It took a lot to reach a point where we could put the past behind us but we get along now.” Sammy comes from a family of achievers. Her great, great grandfather, T. C. Beirne, founded the heritage-listed department store of the same name in Fortitude Valley more than a century ago, and she credits her parents for some of the more powerful qualities she has now. “(Because of them) I never thought I would do anything but achieve and I’ve never felt unequal to a man, it never crossed my mind,” she says. “I don’t think I’m independent, I think I’m anti-dependent.” The 52-year-old has always considered herself something of a lone wolf, but she prefers to think of it as being “with” herself, rather than by herself. “I love doing things solo,” she says. “My old flatmate used to say

‘quit doing the Anne Frank routine’ but I like it. “I love the peace of reading, of lying on the floor in my underwear, eating Easter eggs with my two 23year-old cats.” Her cats – Chops Marie and Peewee Angel – are Brisbane institutions, just like their owner and the markets she runs. “They’re famous – they even had their own showbag back when I was on Triple M,” she says. “They don’t do much, they’re like two half-dead slippers. “But I had a 21st for them two years ago that I am still paying off on my credit card. I love them and they’re icons. Any excuse for a party – I like doing stupid stuff. “I will stay at home forever and
then I will do something really big and loud and then I will go back into my shell, like a tortoise.” Following a particularly tumultuous breakup in recent years, Sammy says she is single but “still perving”. “I was involved with a nightmare man but I’m grateful to him because it blew up my whole world and I’ve done so many amazing things since I realised what sort of person I want in my life,” she says. “I do miss intimacy. I would love to have someone to kiss my neck and to go to the pictures with and, when that person comes, I will give them my heart and give them my all as long as they give it back to me. I’m too old for games. “I’ve got better vision and standards. I have decided to surround myself with people who lift me up and are on the same page as me. “I believe someone is going to come but it’s going to have to be a pretty great guy because I never used to think I was great and now I think I’m a prize.” She says that arriving at this sense of self-love and security was hard, but
she’s a champion at reinvention. She says she practically completed a “Ronald McDonald Hamburger University degree” on herself in the form of a weight loss mission in which she shed 60kg. “Have you seen my fat photo? You’ll die,” she says, offering up a snapshot of herself at 120kg. “My body used to be a bar and grill and now it’s a temple. You know what? I had more fun then, I just didn’t look down – that’s why God invented elastic. “But I didn’t feel good. You’re not that deluded that you don’t know you’re carrying around an entire extra body.” In the future, Sammy has a return to radio in her sights – a show surrounding wellness. She has become well-versed in the field of helping others, with many reaching out to her to seek advice about their own struggles. “It’s not easy, it’s hard. I have broken about 20 personal trainers in my time,” she says. “But everyone says they don’t have time. Yes you do. You just do it. “It’s like with these shoes – everything always works out.”
12 SUM OF US
HELEN DAY, 50 Owner, Creative Academy of Performing Arts, Mt Gravatt
DANA LITTLE, 45 Teacher, Creative Academy of Performing Arts, Mt Gravatt
It seems Dana and I are destined to not only be friends but colleagues. We both trained at the Royal Ballet School in London and then we danced together at the Northern Ballet Theatre in the early 1990s, where we were flatmates in Manchester, northern England. I then moved to South Africa where I danced for another decade in professional companies before retiring when I was 32. We had not seen each other for more than 15 years when we both went to a prep information evening for the same Gold Coast school. We discovered we not only had children the same age but we lived within a few kilometres of each other and had both turned to teaching when our dancing careers were finished. When I decided to buy the academy a year ago, I knew I wanted Dana to be a teacher at the school, which has about 300 students. Dana is an excellent teacher of lyrical dancing, which is a cross between classical and contemporary dancing and I trust her judgment. We work together so well because we have opposite personalities.
When Helen bought the dance school I knew 100 per cent I wanted to be a teacher there. We complement each other’s personalities well because Helen has a softer and reserved approach while I’m more outgoing. Because we both have been classical ballet dancers in a company we have that precision eye and we both can trust each other to pick things up. It is also a wonderful privilege to be able to pass on your knowledge. We are also both mothers so we can relate to children. I have been teaching for 20 years and this is the best place I’ve worked. I love it that I have a friend like Helen who has known me so long and we both have that mutual respect, trust and have danced at a professional level. I grew up on the Gold Coast and spent two years at the Royal Ballet School, 1988-1989, and arrived the year after Helen left. I moved in with Helen when I was dancing at the Northern Ballet Theatre; we had lots of fun on stage. Fiona Purdon

Cultural cutting edge GALLERIES Phil Brown Many of us have romantic notions about what we used to call the South Seas. We look at many of the countries in our region through a kind of colonial prism because the cultures are so different. They are, for some, the exotic other. A fascinating exhibition now at the UQ Anthropology Museum doesn’t condemn us too much for this view. Solomon Islands: Re-enchantment and the colonial shadow is a fascinating window into another world, cultures close to us that most of us know little about. We are indeed enchanted by these worlds of otherness and shouldn’t feel too much post-colonial guilt about that. As the museum’s director, Dr Diana Young, writes in the catalogue, the title “refers to the capacity of old ethnographic collections to enchant”. A lovely way of putting it, I think. So, yes, you will be enchanted by this exhibition which is only the second devoted to Solomon Islands in recent years although, as Diana points out, Honiara, the modern capital of Solomon Islands is closer than Auckland is to Brisbane.
Among the 28,000 items that the UQ Anthropology Museum holds are more than 500 items and images from Solomon Islands. The show includes narratives such as Heads and Tales, about head-hunting history (yikes), and Shells, because shells were worked as rings, inlaid pearl and beads. Malaitans and the Labour Trade is another theme about the “labour trade” that brought many islanders to Queensland. This section includes weapons used in ritual killing and Malaitan men’s body wear. Another section features a screen of photographs assembled by the Queensland labour trader Douglas Rannie with handwritten captions. There’s also a section on music and a contemporary film introducing Solomon Islands culture. The Queensland connections are strong. Between 1870 and 1911 Queensland and Fiji received 24,865 Solomon Islands labourers, many forced, to work on sugar plantations. It’s this trade which ended up securing many of the items for the UQ collection. The exhibition is a fascinating glimpse into a culture we would love to know more about.

ACTOR’S ADVOCATE … Rachel Griffiths relates to her latest role. Picture: Adam Taylor
The story of a courageous young Toowoomba woman who finds justice after years of heartbreak resonated with former Queenslander Rachel Griffiths. The actor says she always looks for a genuine connection with roles she plays. The movie Don’t Tell is the result: the true story of 22-year-old child abuse survivor Lyndal, who won a legal battle against Toowoomba Preparatory School in 2001. Rachel, who spent the first six years of her life on the Gold Coast, plays psychologist Joy Conolly, a vocal supporter of Lyndal, who was sexually abused by her boarding master Kevin Guy in 1990. “I can’t fake it if I don’t relate to the story and my character,” she says. Lyndal’s lawyer Stephen Roche, now of Brisbane, wrote the book, Don’t Tell (2009), about the 2001 civil court decision which led to improved
child safeguards and prompted survivors to come forward. Rachel, a mother-of-three, says the movie has an important universal message and is not just a local story. Don’t Tell stars Jack Thompson as lawyer Bob Myers, Susie Porter as Lyndal’s mum Sue, Jacqueline McKenzie as barrister Jean Dalton, Gyton Grantley as Kevin Guy, Aden Young as Stephen Roche and Sara West as Lyndal. “It’s an extraordinary Australian cast; the cast has a lot of gravitas and gives an emotional power to the story,” Rachel says. Melbourne-based Rachel, whose father Edward grew up in Brisbane, says, “Joy is one of those people that once she knows the truth, she can’t keep silent about the truth. I identify with that. It’s nice to play an advocate.” A lifelong Catholic, the 48-year-old

I love my kids but I put on conditions such as ‘I will love you more if you pick your underpants off the floor’.” Don’t Tell is Rachel’s first Queensland movie since Muriel’s Wedding (1994), which was filmed on the Gold Coast and Sydney. Rachel recently found out that her father’s family have been in Brisbane since the 1870s. “My Queensland genes are brave, entrepreneurial and adventurous. One of my ancestors won a Southport pub in a poker game, while I’m proud that my grandmother’s sister was the first woman to graduate from dentistry from the University of Queensland.” DON’T TELL is in cinemas from May 18

Sibling ribaldry Sally Browne Their names are Ell Sachs, Laura Trenerry and Lucy Fox but the Travelling Sisters are liable to embody many characters on stage. The girls, who met at university in Toowoomba, have been living up to their name, travelling the country for the Anywhere Theatre Festival, performing their new show to much laughter, applause and acclaim. They’re fresh from the Melbourne Comedy Festival where they did two shows a night for two weeks. “These characters are totally new to the Anywhere Theatre audience,” Ell says. “ We’ve got some mullet boys from Dalby called the Ice Boys, three idiots who try to tell a story about ice skating. We have these grotesque lovebirds who are super in love and love to play games with the audience. “And Boadicea, the giantess who has been in Brisbane before, and is
made up of the three of us. I play the left boob and left arm. There’s also three dancing potatoes in a love triangle that goes bad.” At Adelaide Fringe they did 18 shows, and in Perth another six. But no two shows are the same. “You have to be in tune with the audience. That’s when the alchemy of theatre comes together and makes some funny (stuff),” Ell says. The trio met at the University of Southern Queensland where they were studying theatre and acting. “We hung out and fell in love with each other and thought each other was hilarious. We really feel like sisters now,” Ell says. They make their own crazy costumes, and love dressing up. “It’s like the little child in us all never left.” Travelling Sisters, Five Sisters Cafe & Bar, 76 Fish Lane, South Brisbane, 7.30pm, until May 18. anywheretheatre.com

FOOD
Secret service RESTAURANT Tony Harper Happy Boy was one of my choice discoveries for 2014, not because it was the plushest place in town, nor because its food was the most wondrous (although it was exciting in its own honest rustic manner). I liked it for its bravery and difference, for its disbelief in the common ideas of what makes a restaurant tick, and its unerring confidence in its own very pared-back version. Happy Boy has a new sister – Greenglass – and although it is very different in a culinary sense, it shares the same minimalist ideals. It follows the Melburnian (and Happy Boy) trend of being noticed by its lack of presence – a door on George St, minimally signed, a flight of stairs to a first-floor corridor occupied by two vacant dusty rooms, then a small kitchen to the left and at last a doorway to a light-filled, purposefully sparse dining room. It’s an arrival that breeds a sort of clubby, secret handshake, “yeah I too know about this place” feeling – we’ll leave the rest of the uninitiated city lunchers to their focaccia and lattes. A wall ledge holds a massive line of bottles, all apparently available. Meanwhile, there’s a tightly pared page of wines, five in total, all uncommon, by the glass and bottle: riesling, chardonnay, rose, pinot and shiraz, $12-$15 a glass. Then there’s six cocktails and two beers. Lovely. The menu is just as succinct (small enough that a mate and I decided to have a crack at everything), French-

inspired and, like the space, basking in hip simplicity. It’s listed on a blackboard – for our visit: salad, chicken, fish and two versions of steak frites (eye and rib fillets) – and it changes constantly. Salad ($16) is a morphed nicoise – beans, potato, egg, sundried tomato, carrot and feta. It’s a good salad, properly dressed, quirked a little by roasted/fried potato (crunchy, delicious) and just-right egg. I could live a century without ever craving sundried tomato – here it’s a

hindrance rather than a spoiler. Chicken ($18) is sort of French bistro meets home cooking – roast Maryland topped with caramelised onions (almost to jam) on a mound of creamy mash, tossed greens to the side, a drizzle of jus and the best dish of the set. There’s snapper fillet ($25) on a fat slice of eggplant (both panfried) with a good dollop of tomato chutney and a rich, silky saffron beurre blanc. The tomato component seems out of sync with the rest of the dish – it starts to mix with the saffron
sauce and, for me, spoils an otherwise very classic simplicity. Then steak frites (rib fillet $32, eye fillet $40). It shares the same sticky onion as the chicken, but here woven through a pretty good sauce with frites and salad to the side. It’s food without surprises or tricks, but it is perfectly cooked and undeniably delicious. There is design and cunning to Greenglass, but it flatters with its hide and seek, can-you-see-past-thebumpkin facade. It’s all kinds of fun.

AM PM
PM Ben’s Burgers, West End, Fortitude Valley Brisbanites sure love burgers at the moment. We have the irresistibly ridiculous Miss Kay’s to the cheat-day treats at Charboys. If you want a delicious yet no-frills cheeseburger though, you cannot go past Ben’s Burgers. Inspired by cartoon show Bob’s Burgers, Ben’s keeps it simple and cool. The burgers aren’t over-thetop, with the Classic and the Cheesy ($11 each) melting in your mouth just like an American diner cheeseburger should. The Veg ($13) offers a smoky mushroom and Swiss cheese overload. You can also grab homemade cherry cola ($5), or sweet and sticky Chocolate Hershey’s milkshakes ($8). Keeping to this simple retro recipe has paid off, with a steady flow of customers at both restaurants. Try the Cheesy, fries and schooner of beer combo ($20). It’s a fan favourite.
AM Little Loco, New Farm Little Loco is a standout on New Farm’s cafe scene. Of course it does avocado toast but as with everything on the menu, it takes things up a notch with goats cheese, dukkah, charred corn and cherry tomatoes. Then there’s the green bowls with avo, dukkah, chorizo, poached eggs and pomegranate. It’s owned by Brisbane Roar defender Daniel Bowles. Its sister cafe, Miss Jones, will open this year at an undisclosed location.
Open daily 7am-11pm. 5B Winn Lane, Fortitude Valley and 153 Boundary St, West End.
Open 6.30am-3pm weekdays, 7am-2.30pm weekends, 121 Merthyr Rd, New Farm.

TRAVEL
Nature works
wonders With so much to see and do, the world’s third largest sand island calls for a visit Leanne Edmistone Nature rated our day out at Tangalooma Island Resort perfectly: five starfish were washed by crystalclear waves gently on to a pristine beach. Fitting, as nature is the main attraction at Moreton Island’s only resort. Somewhat ashamedly I’ll admit I’ve lived in Brisbane for more than 10 years and never set foot on the world’s third largest sand island, of which 98 per cent is national park. With Tangalooma upgrading its day cruise packages to tempt more people across the bay, it was a great chance to introduce my sons, aged 7 and 9, to the abundant natural beauty and adventure on their doorstep. Patient skipper Richard briefly relinquished the controls of the Tangalooma Jet to the boys on the 75minute cruise from the Pinkenba terminal to the island, posed for the obligatory photo and answered their many questions. Ashore, we headed for lunch at the Build-A-Burger Bar, and then took a dip in one of two resort pools, watched by a pair of stone curlews.
My top tip for travelling to the island, especially with hungry children, is to pack a coolbox with drinks and snacks, because the included lunch vouchers only go so far. And make full use of the lockers available, to store bags and valuables. Stepping aboard a bus on steroids for the Desert Safari Tour, guides Dougie and Nikki shared interesting trivia about the island during the 15minute drive to sand dune country. Once there, guide Sean sacrificed his body and dignity with a hilariously graphic depiction of the dos and don’ts of sand tobogganing before letting the goggled tour group loose on a 38m-high dune. The gruelling climb up was well worth the glorious 50km/h ride down on waxed boards – the first time anyhow. The second time I somehow lost control, face-planted and tumbled to the bottom, sand from head to toe. The boys found it hilarious. Back at the resort, sweaty and sandy, we tried out another pool and wandered the beach – rimmed as it is with plenty of picnic tables, a small playground and open grassy areas for kicking a ball – before meeting Eco
UP CLOSE … Feel at one with nature by feeding wild dolphins at Tangalooma.
LIFE’S A BEACH … Tangalooma Island Resort has upgraded its cruise packages; and (below) the day’s experience gets a five starfish rating.
Ranger Steve for the afternoon kookaburra feeding. Two family groups, a total of eight birds, dropped by, happy to pose for a few photos in exchange for strips of lean beef. It was time to feed my own family, so we headed to one of the eateries – there are two cafes, two restaurants and a bar from which to choose. Then we stood on the shore to wait for the stars of the evening’s entertainment to arrive – the dolphins. They really put on a show, cavorting and tumbling, using hapless puffer fish as ping pong balls and popping their heads up with cheeky grins to gauge the crowd’s reaction. The highlight of the day was getting up close to these magnificent mammals in the Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Feeding Program. My boys were thrilled to wade waist-deep into the shallows to offer a small fish to Echo, a dominant male known to roll to the side and eyeball every new friend he meets before gently taking proffered snacks. After
the 6.30pm feeding session it was time to leave. With the bow pointed toward the glittering rainbow lights of home, we each settled into an exhausted, satisfied reverie as we relived the day’s adventures. Those starfish weren’t wrong. PACKAGES range from the Beach Day Cruise (adults $89, children $49) to the Premium Dolphin Feeding Day Cruise (adults $199, children $149). Boats depart 7am and 10am, returning 4pm or 7.30pm. WHY QUALITY MATTERS
“Did you know that approximately 1 in 8 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime?“ “I know I need a mammogram but does it really matter where you go? I thought all mammograms are the same?” No – breast imaging is a subspecialty in radiology and some mammograms are better than others. difw has been the private breast imaging provider of choice in Brisbane since 1998, under the care of Dr Paula Sivyer, our founding radiologist. Dr Sivyer’s reputation in breast imaging is unsurpassed in Queensland and she has trained a team of dedicated imaging professionals who share her passion for providing breast imaging that is a cut above the industry standard.
Our better breast imaging experience includes: • no waiting list • same day results • 3D mammography available • all referrals accepted • ave appointment time 1.5 to 2 hours (imaging only, assumes no biopsy).
We compare imaging year after year, thanks to our large digital data archive, so you know the subtlest changes in breast tissue are logged and assessed. We provide results on the day, so you don’t have to worry.

Inside the teen scene

Fiona Purdon As a seasoned news reporter and author, Madonna King rarely cries on the job. But the mother of two girls was moved to tears when reading dozens of heartbreaking survey answers from 14-year-old girls while researching her new book, Being 14. “They all wrote to their mothers, ‘Can you stop and listen to me and really hear what I’m saying?’,’’ she says. “These girls perceived their mothers weren’t understanding them, they wanted their mums to listen to them without judgment. We (mums) are trying our best but there is a breakdown in communication.’’ Madonna, of Norman Park, says her seventh book, subtitled Helping fierce teens become awesome women, is among the most rewarding and important work of her 30-year career in newspapers and radio. “I can already tell this book is making a difference. It is putting all the information together,’’ she says of the title that is now in its second print run, just two weeks after its launch. Being 14 covers a range of issues such as social media concerns, anxiety, boyfriends, pocket money, the pressure for perfection and the chronic lack of sleep experienced by most teenagers. Madonna interviewed 192 girls, about 50 school principals and experts such as police officers, school counsellors and psychologists who all said the 14-year age group, especially
for girls, was a major concern. The book’s subject is close to Madonna’s heart as the mother of Madison, 13, and Siena, 12. “I would have still done the book because I was so intrigued that so many people told me within a few weeks of each other about the difficulties of being 14,’’ she says. “But at the back of my mind the fact I had two young daughters, it made it a bigger motivation. It (the book) is a gift to me, because I have learnt so much out of doing it. The book is a way of helping us, as parents, listen to our girls.’’ Madonna, who hosted ABC Radio’s morning current affairs program for six years, reveals she has made changes to her own parenting by making sure she is involved in her daughters’ lives and engaged with their issues and concerns.
She finds the one-on-one car time during a pick-up from an activity is an ideal time for girls to feel comfortable about revealing their innermost fears and thoughts. “I’ve also changed the language I use. I now say I hope they go to university and I hope they have a nice group of friends. It is important they don’t feel directed or expected to do something or otherwise they tend to go in the opposite direction,’’ she says. Madonna, who is speaking at local schools, says her daughters are not on social media but she knows the time will come. What she found out about social media was terrifying, including that one in three teenage girls, according to police and educators, will send a half-naked photograph of themselves to someone else. Lasting impression Tonya Turner When Brooke and Jared decided to build their “forever home” they never imagined they’d get so many doorknocks by passers-by stopping to compliment them. Their grand home on a double corner block in Gordon Park is certainly show-stopping, evoking the kind of idyllic family homes seen in heartwarming movies where the ups and downs of life unfold in charming surroundings and winters are spent huddled around the warm and cosy glow of the fireplace. In real life, Brooke had to forgo the fireplace she wanted after the budget reached its peak and she faced the fact that a fireplace wouldn’t be used that often in Brisbane’s warm climate. “I just wanted that mantel to hang Christmas stockings on but we realised we’d rather put the money into other areas,” she says. A 25m lap pool, on the other hand, made the cut, thanks to Jared’s father and brother, of L & V Pools, helping to keep the costs down. The couple bought the pre-war Queenslander house four years ago when it was in pretty rough condition. The old part of the house was raised and renovated to create space for four upstairs bedrooms and two bathrooms. designer Amanda Harris of Oliveaux Interiors, Brooke, a doctor, and Jared, an engineer, created a home that would keep up with them and their three children – Scarlett, 6, D’Arcy, 4, and Eliza, 1 – over the years. “This is going to be our forever house,” Brooke says. “We want to stay here until the kids don’t want to live with us anymore. “I had lots of pictures I’d collected from magazines and Pinterest and because I was so busy with work I needed help,” she says. Every detail was carefully chosen, from french doors and transom
windows to the furnishings and a large fence around the property. “We drove around the suburbs for lots of Sundays doing drive-bys and taking photographs to choose the fence we wanted,” Brooke says. New pieces sit alongside secondhand finds and some sentimental items, including various antiques owned by Brooke’s mum and dad who no longer had room for them after downsizing, her own cabbage-ware collection, and paintings done by Brooke’s aunty. “I like a mix of old and new and I’ve bought a lot of stuff on Gumtree,” Brooke says, pointing out several
occasional chairs which have been reupholstered in stylish new fabrics. Amanda says old and sentimental pieces are ideal to personalise a home. “Generally our clients always have old family pieces that they love to incorporate or things that have meaning to them because that makes their homes look different and interesting,” she says. “It doesn’t look like it’s out of a magazine or one particular style. It has a family feel to it and you feel comfortable straight away.” Interior designer: Oliveaux Interiors, ph: 3394 2477

A new yardstick Michelle Bailey Once the realm of untouchable rose beds and manicured lawns, Brisbane’s front yards are being reclaimed for more casual family use. Entry courtyards such as this one in Ascot – designed by Shaun Lockyer Architects with Lush Landscape Solutions – create usable outdoor space next to the footpath. “We wanted to create a house that engaged with the street rather than a house that appeared fortified,” Shaun Lockyer says. “There is a deliberate balancing of privacy and security with transparency and glimpses through to the courtyard possible from the street.” Slate-paved terraces with timber-inlay seats create an attractive place to sit, play and ponder outdoors. To layer the space with shade and natural textures, landscape designer Dennis Scott resolved to “accentuate
and soften the edges of the garden walls in white and charcoal”. “We went for mass planting of a few species to keep it simple,” he says. A frangipani and a pink trumpet tree were added to create height and depth, providing colour in spring. 30 RECIPE
A warm hug Alastair McLeod I drove to Aratula the other day for work. After the meeting I chose to drive a further hour-and-a-half to the Granite Belt to enjoy my guiltiest of pleasures. Sutton’s Farm in Thulimbah bakes the king of all apple pies. It comes with cream and ice cream and it sits proud of the plate by more than a few inches. But what’s most
important is that the apples are picked from the orchard right outside the kitchen door. David and Roslyn Sutton grow dozens of varieties from which they produce an array of juices, ciders, vinegar, brandy and their famed pie. It’s apple season now so give this recipe a go to be king (or queen) of your kitchen.
PINK LADY BRIOCHE GALETTE Prep time: 1 hour + 2 hours proving
INGREDIENTS 5g dried yeast 25ml milk, blood temperature 250g plain flour 40g sugar ½tsp salt 3 eggs, beaten 115g soft butter 6 Pink Lady apples, peeled, cored and cut into six 150ml double cream + extra to serve 2tbs raisins, plumped in boiling water
METHOD Preheat oven to 190C. Dissolve yeast in milk. Using a food mixer, combine flour, 10g of the sugar and salt. With the dough hook attachment on low speed, add milk mixture. After 1 min, add eggs and continue to mix until a dough forms and the mix comes away from the side of the bowl.
Stylist: Lyndel Miller. Picture: Ric Frearson
Next add 65g of the butter, piece by piece until incorporated. The dough should be silky and glossy. Cover the bowl and leave the dough for 1 hour. Heat the remaining butter in a heavy based fry pan over mediumhigh heat, add the apple segments and sprinkle with remaining sugar. Toss until apples are well caramelised but still firm. Transfer to a tray and place in the fridge to cool. Next, spread the dough into a 26cm cake tin, creating a raised border. Allow to prove at room temperature for 30 mins then arrange apple pieces on top. Prove for a further 30 mins then spoon over cream and scatter with raisins. Bake for 30 mins – it should be springy to the touch – then cool to room temperature before serving with additional cream. Serves 6

Nature meets luxury Keeping up to date with the latest kitchen trends is all part of the job for the design team at Enigma Interiors. Designer Lee Hardcastle, who worked on Enigma’s HIA Awardwinning kitchen design in 2016, says elements from the late ’70s and ’80s will play a part in kitchen design in 2017 – think fun, quirky edges and corners, patterns and polygon abstract shapes. There will also be a blend of contemporary colour palettes and luxury appliances with a touch of geometric style. “Designs will become a little more exciting this year by using a melding of shapes, dimensions and texture,” he says. “A sense of freedom with quirky details will emerge – corners, overhead cupboards and internal detailing will become prominent features. There will also be more use of modern, automated technology with CNC routers and laser etching incorporated into the design.”
Timeless timber Buywood Furniture’s solid timber benchtops are perfect for modern interior design, director Dave Nicholson says. Dave says the organic quality of the timber adds warmth and texture to a room, making them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. “We offer a variety of solid timber benchtops, bathroom vanities,

Lee says dark charcoals and a rich palette of off-white tones will be season favourites, highlighted by accents of vivid colour. “Beautiful peacock blues, scarlet and fuchsia will all feature this year, woven with variations of warm metallic, while the use of timber will continue to be popular as people try to draw natural texture into the house,” he says.

Making an impact Finnish design company Marimekko has been designing and printing distinctive textiles since 1949, with a range of its designs available at The Modern Furniture Store. Store manager Emma Honan says that, following humble beginnings, Marimekko fabrics have become internationally renowned, with their timeless designs enjoying a renaissance as stretched canvasses and wall hangings. “The Modern is Brisbane’s sole stockist of Marimekko fabric and it has a comprehensive range that can be bought by the metre,” Emma says. “Staff will help you select the right fabric and give you advice on scale and the correct dimensions for your home. “They will then organise to have your canvas stretched for you. Stretched wall hangings are a cost
effective way to give impact on a large scale for a reasonable price and our staff have helped many people who want an easy solution for revitalising their walls for a house sale or just a seasonal refresh. “The canvasses also work equally well in commercial settings.” THEMODERN.NET.AU PH: 3254 3885

SAFE AND SOUND
Think safety first, good working order second. Make sure there are no loose stairs, hinges, doors, windows, tiles, eaves, bricks or pavers. Everything must be in top working condition. Get a building inspection so you have expert opinion. Go through your home with a critical eye and note all broken, worn out, threadbare elements and replace or repair them.

Grand vintage This 1930s Queenslander has been renovated to preserve its original features but embrace contemporary additions. The house’s traditional elegance shows through a single-gable facade, highlighted by a butterfly staircase, timber balustrade, fretwork and a wraparound balcony. Built in 1920 by John McCallum Snr, the father of the famous actor and producer of the same name, and named after his Cremorne Theatre in Stanley St Brisbane this grand home was the centre of social life for the who’s who of Brisbane. Horoscope with Tanya Obreza LIBRA (September 23 - October 23) Foresight has its place in helping you to be successful, however this week may find you attempting to secondguess the future. The result will be a heap of ill-founded conclusions, and some of those are just plain wrong. For now, leave prophecy to the psychics.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20) Everything has an upside, which is something worth remembering this week. Although usually shrewd, your affirmative batteries need a quick top-up. The real problem is that you are feeling vulnerable. When life becomes this confusing, it can help to take a quick break, particularly after the 12th.
SCORPIO
GEMINI
LEO
(May 21 to June 21) Once your mind is made up, you are unstoppable. You have had some great ideas lately and you cannot wait to put them into motion. Just consider whether have you included your partner or a particular friend in the decision making process? They deserve to voice their opinions.
(July 23 - August 23) Leos feel a strong push towards securing house and home this week, preferring to adopt a safer, more conventional stance. However this sudden desire for stability may be at odds with a more restless partner or friend. The end result of this could be head-on conflict. So much for peace and quiet.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22) Fulfilment and happiness are close at hand, promising the successful outcome of a venture or relationship. This culmination of events may also indicate material wealth or a greater spiritual awareness. You may choose to buy that dream house. Alternatively it could mean a wonderful partnership is on offer.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 22) Supposedly, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But should your suspicions be aroused this week, few will get the benefit of the doubt. An advantage of being so astute is that it’s almost impossible for someone to get the better of you. Your inner voice serves you well.
(October 24 - November 22) It’s a week for you to be cautious because you or another person may be unscrupulous. You may be running away from an unresolved issue, or someone could cheat you out of something that is rightfully yours. An envious colleague may also try to make you look bad, just to enhance their own reputation.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) It appears that you are the luckiest sign of the zodiac this week. But although you will have Lady Luck on your side, don’t test your good fortune. Many planets are still out of phase so if you want to avoid bad press or quarrels you had best be on your best behaviour. And if you’ve nothing good to say, say nothing at all.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) At last there is an honest breath of fresh air in your relationships, which allows you to comfortably be yourself. The week ahead offers an easier run, although there are no promises
DID YOU KNOW? In 1969, the US Navy spent $375,000 on an aerodynamic analysis of the “self-suspended flare”. The study’s conclusion was that the “frisbee” was not feasible as military hardware. In 1947 Marilyn Monroe was chosen as the first Miss California Artichoke Queen.
regarding how long this will last. For now, you have the chance to simply enjoy.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) Life has both its ups and its downs, and understanding and accepting this enables us to maintain a more realistic view of life itself. You must remember, however, that just as the proverbial ‘wheel’ can turn up, it can also certainly turn down. That is, quite simply, the eternal rhythm and cycle of life.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Are you unsure how you should best tackle a delicate situation? You just to be tactful. Don’t worry if you end up saying something that causes resentment. Your antagonists will eventually be blessed with the right level of insight, and then you will be deeply thanked. You may, perhaps, even be rewarded.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Mercury, which is the cosmic communicator, turned direct on May 7 which means that after that date any recent misunderstandings, confusions or delayed communications come to an end. Usually the message to be derived from Mercury moving forward is “full speed ahead”. So you could expect a new job, some new status or a new love. tanyaobreza.com
