HELLO

The last time Brisbane News featured cover star Kara Rosenlund, she was selling bric-abrac from her stylishly restored 1956 Franklin caravan at markets from Brisbane to Sydney. That was in 2013 and while the in-demand photographer and stylist still spends much of her time on the road, she has swapped the vintage wares business to focus on photo shoots for glossy magazines and high-end fashion clients. The day we got together at her Nundah home to chat about her latest adventures (Cover story, P12), Kara was preparing to leave for a shoot in Canada. And husband Timothy O’Brien, founder of consultancy firm Hatched, had just flown in from a client meeting in Los Angeles. Life is hectic for the energetic duo and a Sydney base would probably make more sense, but they have no plans to leave Queensland. “We love what we’ve created here; it feels familiar,” Kara says. “You have to go elsewhere to work, but we are right near the airport.” Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Enjoy the issue.

THEN & NOW 1872, Hamilton Hill: Would you be comfortable spending time in this living room? The Dickson family (pictured) was. Businessman and politician Sir James Dickson started building Toorak House, the castle-like mansion at the top of Hamilton Hill, in 1856, continually expanding it until 1910, adding a storey and additional wings. He filled the house with treasures from the family’s travels. That’s much like the subject of our cover story, stylist Kara Rosenlund, although the results of their collections are vastly different. THE CHAT

Grow to love SIMONE JELLEY Commercial flower grower

I went from never having a garden to signing a lease on the farm

“It’s beautiful – stunning blue sky, little drifts of clouds, butterflies and bees are flying about. It’s sublime.” Simone Jelley is describing her office. It’s a picturesque 1.2ha farm on Lamb Island, in Moreton Bay, where she grows food – edible flowers that are as beautiful as the view. Through her business, Pretty Produce, she grows blooms, leaves, weeds and wild plants, and sells them to eateries including Esquire, Blackbird Bar & Grill, and Gauge. Her crop is used to decorate cakes, for plate presentation, and in salads, desserts and baked goods. Simone will be at Regional Flavours at South Bank this weekend, showing how in six years she turned her “upmarket kitchen garden” into a business supplying top local chefs. “In 2011, my husband Dave (a geologist) built his dream home on Macleay Island (a short ferry ride from Lamb Island) and he said he’d do the house but I’d have to do the garden,” she says. “I went from never having a garden to signing a lease on the farm in 2015. I’m a little bit off-centre and a deeply curious person so I was soon growing the weirdest things I could find.” Her island neighbours began asking Simone to supply them with edibles and word spread to the mainland. Now, she and her team work seven days a week growing and delivering her produce; researching and trialling new plants and taste combinations; and hosting tours of her farm. “Agriculture is such an incredibly grounding career,” she says. “When I am in this green space, I become part of it.” She says before eating any plant, research it thoroughly. “Flowers can also be confronting to eat – a few of them have bitter profiles that aren’t pleasant. And there are some lovely tasting ones.” AMANDA HORSWILL prettyproduce.com.au Regional Flavours, Jul 15-16, South Bank Parklands, South Brisbane. regionalflavours.com.au

DRIVE JUMPERS AND JAZZ IN JULY WARWICK

This is one of Queensland’s quirkiest winter festivals. Warwick’s Jumpers and Jazz is a combination of yarn bombing and live jazz. It kicks off with the hotly contested tree jumper exhibition (in which local knitters wrap textile art around the bare winter trees) on Jul 20, and runs for 11 days. Keep an eye out for guided tree jumper tours, which are perfect for first-timers. jumpersandjazz.com

1 APOLOGY In last week’s edition of Brisbane News, an item in The List incorrectly stated that Brisbane artist Jane James’s new exhibition explored her “coming out”. While the exhibition does examine the issues of diversity in her series of paintings, they do not reference Jane’s own journey. She remains happily married to Peter. “These works honour those people in my life for whom coming out is a daily act of bravery and exposure,”

DANCE WUTHERING HEIGHTS DAY SPRING HILL

Jane says. “The works are a celebration of diversity within sameness, and a reminder of the language we use, and the power it wields.” Brisbane News apologises for this error and any distress caused. Semantics, which includes Suspended (Cow Hitch) (above), is on at Jan Manton Art until Jul 29 at 1/93 Fortescue St, Spring Hill, Sat, 10am-4pm or by appointment, ph: 3831 3060.

Don your best red frock and head to Bedford Park, on the corner of Love and Water streets, Spring Hill, on Jul 15 from 2.30pm where fans of singer Kate Bush will recreate her Wuthering Heights video. There will be a rundown of the dance moves and some trial runs before fans let loose with the song. Afterwards, head to the Jubilee Hotel for the Kate Bush Bash, from 6pm.

NEW FARM

FOOD DINNER WITH A DIFFERENCE NEW FARM

Relive the rise and fall of Queensland’s most controversial premier, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, played by Colin Lane (aka half of comedy duo Lano and Woodley), in this satirical musical comedy which makes merry of Sir Joh’s idiosyncratic use of English, with original tunes such as Pumpkin Scone Diplomacy, Feeding the Chooks and the catchy Joh for PM. Until Jul 16.

To celebrate the six-week truffle season, WATT Riverside Restaurant and Bar head chef Michael Harris will host a five-course dinner on Jul 20 dedicated to the black Australian truffle, matched with local produce. The decadent treat for the tastebuds is part of his Dinner with a Difference series, which raises money for charity.

Kurtjar artist Ian Waldron’s show of acrylics, prints and sculpture-installations portrays themes of rural life, symbols of heritage and ancestry, and references his early career painting signs for supermarkets. It includes Brighton Beach ... Gulf of Carpentaria (detail, above). At FireWorks Gallery, 52 Doggett St, Jul 14-Aug 19.

10 LIFE

Belinda Seeney My supersoft yoga pants eased elegantly and stealthily into my work wardrobe I cannot for the life of me remember what I used to wear on weekends. My memory is not that bad and I’m only trying to cast my mind back a couple of years at most but I’m drawing a complete blank. I am, of course, referring to the BC period – the Before Cropped tights period – those days of yore when people pounded the pavement in old T-shirts and shorts, and workout wear, such as it was, was never seen outside the confines of the gym. Those were the days before activewear suddenly burst on to the scene like a pepped-up Aerobics Oz Style instructor, lunging and grapevining its way into our wardrobes. At first I scoffed at the idea of paying an eye-watering, triple-digit sum for a pair of gym tights, no matter how scientific the design or hi-tech the fabric. What was the point of dropping serious cash on something that I was only going to sweat in that no one would see outside the gym, was my argument. Then I acquired my first pair of designer running tights and I

understood. A marvellous feat of engineering, they fitted like a glove with their smooth lines, sturdy stitching, flattering shape and a firm hold that managed to keep everything in check as I took them through their paces. They were just the warm-up, the gateway piece to an activewear addiction that took hold quickly – and I am showing no signs of making a recovery. In less than two short years, my collection has grown from a single pair of tights to a dresser full of sports crops, tanks, tees, jackets, shorts and a dazzling array of pants in every length imaginable. I stumble out of bed on a Saturday morning and automatically rifle through the packed drawers for an outfit to take me from the barre studio to breakfast; school sports to the supermarket; the laundry to the lawnmower. On Sunday mornings I get dressed for yoga, despite the fact the class does not start until 5pm. If at all. Now that morning temperatures have plummeted to single digits, I plan ahead and pop on a pair of stretchy, seam-free running tights in

lieu of pyjama pants so I’m already half-dressed to take the dog on our pre-dawn shuffle. I wear activewear to brunch with my friends, lunch with my family and on one recent occasion, Saturday evening drinks with my mates at a swanky new inner-city pub. Yes, the comfort, versatility and sheer volume of my activewear collection means that it now influences far more of my fashion choices than I would previously have admitted. My supersoft, brushed cotton yoga pants limbered up and eased elegantly and stealthily into my work wardrobe late last year. Knowing I’d be cutting it fine dashing from the office to an evening BodyBalance class, I dressed that morning in my yoga pants, tucked them into my boots and threw a dress over the top to pass them off as thick stockings. This past weekend I gathered up a week’s worth of washing and tossed it into my machine, only noticing once I’d pegged it on the line that it was 90 per cent activewear. Resistance is futile – I’m well and truly hooked.

I have just had two weeks on holiday and I spent quite a bit of time on that holiday dealing with email. So in a way it really wasn’t a holiday at all. Normally I don’t look at my work email when I’m on a break but I thought I would try it this time and worked out the remote login for that purpose. That was a mistake. So I spent half my time off trying to whittle down my inbox and that’s an impossible task because email is like a flood that never stops flowing. Once getting email was exciting. Remember the movie You’ve Got Mail? I watched it again recently when I was bored in a hotel in Sydney (I must have been really bored), and Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan got very excited every time they got an email. The movie is way too long and seems rather outdated, but it is a

nostalgic look at a time when getting an email was kind of pleasurable. Now it’s a daily deluge and no matter how many emails you delete, there are always more to replace them. I was thinking about this the other day and it made me think of the story of Odysseus’s wife Penelope. I know it sounds like a stretch making an analogy between email and Greek mythology, but there is a connecting theme. While Odysseus, king of the island of Ithaca, was making his way home from the Trojan War (it took him 10 years), his wife Penelope was busy fending off suitors. She promised them she would choose one when she had finished weaving a burial shroud for Odysseus’s elderly father Laertes. She would weave by day and unpick her weaving at night so she

Phil Brown never really got anywhere, which was her aim. I feel that way with email, like I’m never getting anywhere. I only ever want about 5 per cent of the emails I get. But I have to go through them carefully because I don’t want to delete the good ones in my haste to get rid of all the dross. Sometimes, in a flurry of deleting, I have discarded stuff I really needed. That’s par for the course. Now if I could just get down to, say, 200 emails in my inbox, I would be happy but I haven’t managed that yet. When I get really frustrated with all this and need a laugh I just go to spam and see how many Nigerian lotteries I have won and how many dodgy offers of marriage I have received in broken English. Apparently I am very popular in the Ukraine. Ha!

A path less

travelled Through a lens or at a bazaar, photographer Kara Rosenlund has a knack for capturing beauty Leesa Maher

ALL WHITE NOW ... Kara and Tim’s kitchen is home to an eclectic mix of old and new.

RIES T N E L A GENENROW OPEN

Flecks of white paint are threaded through Kara Rosenlund’s locks and there are matching dots on her fingernails. Given that she is one of life’s “doers”, I figure the interiors stylist, photographer and author has been reinventing a dresser or cupboard over the weekend. “No, no, I was painting the new studio I’m moving into,” she says, laughing. “It’s time to grow, do more and have the room. I’ve been working out of a bedroom. This is a really big leap, but it’s an overdue leap.” The Brisbane-based Instagram star (with 120,000 followers) is primarily a travel and lifestyle photographer. She is often on the road, spending half the year on location shooting images for clients such as Conde Nast Traveller, Country Style, Vanity Fair, ELLE Decoration UK and Italian menswear label Ermenegildo Zegna. “I am about to go to Canada for the Qantas magazine,” she says. “I’m travelling with a journalist and it’s a small gig for just over a week. I’m really fortunate that people send me everywhere, but if it just doesn’t feel right, I’ll say, ‘It’s not a good fit’. “You’ve got to be honest because if you take jobs that aren’t right, you could be left in the middle of Africa

with no one to look after you. You have to go on your instinct. I suppose I am a bit psychic. Aren’t we all?” Despite her hectic schedule, Kara ensures she carves out time for personal photographic projects. Lately she has felt a pull towards the desert, but she hasn’t pinpointed the destination. “I don’t know what it is yet, but I know I’m doing it.” The Nundah resident’s most ambitious endeavour so far was her debut book, Shelter – How Australians Live, published in 2015 by Penguin Lantern and now in its third edition. The project took Kara across the country photographing rural homes and the people who live in them. “I’m so proud,” she says. “I look back and I can’t believe it was me who did that, because it was such a huge undertaking. I wasn’t sure how it would be received, but people really wanted to see a book like this. “I think they were exhausted by perfect houses that were influenced by the Hamptons or France. “They wanted to see themselves in a book, and that’s what it is, married with the landscape. It’s heartfelt.” Finding the houses was tough, let alone getting inside them. In the end it was word of mouth – and Kara’s infectious smile – that secured access to some unique properties.

“Tim (husband Timothy O’Brien) came on a couple of trips, but the magic wouldn’t happen when he was with me,” she says. “I had to be on my own and people had to see me as vulnerable. It’s just primitive. When there is one person, they’ll bring that

person in; when there are two, they’ll say, they are fine together. So it was really important to be a lone wolf.” She grew up in Boondall, the only child of Doug and Shirley. Kara says there were always cameras about the house, including an old Polaroid model “that never had any film in it”. “But there was just something very romantic about this black box, so for my 13th birthday, I received a camera and would photograph my little flock of chickens.” The strong creative streak comes from dad Doug, a tiler, Kara says. “He’s a very visual person. We’ll have a conversation, not much will be

said, but we’ll both know exactly what needs to happen. It’s like this weird visual language.” Mum Shirley is a constant support with a “gorgeous, overflowing heart”. “And you need that nurturer when you are going 1000 miles an hour doing this or that. That person plays an important role to keep it all together, to keep everyone fed.” With Doug and Shirley planning a move to Sandgate, Kara’s childhood home will soon be no more. She’s not sure how she feels about that. “I probably need to do a little project and document that before it goes,” she says.

Stepping into the three-bedroom Queenslander she shares with Tim, 35, an impact adviser, is like a warm embrace. Tones of whisky, ivory and white bestow a sense of calm, with treasures all around. Some pieces date back to Kara’s two years in London, where she worked for high-profile antiques dealer Appley Hoare, others from her Travelling Wares days, the name of her caravan pop-up that sold vintage wares at markets. “I like to collect en masse,” she says, gesturing to a clay vessel crammed with bone-handled utensils. But texture is her weakness. > Turn to P14

NATURAL BEAUTY … Kara’s laidback dining area; her Wilder print; and travel scent.

“I can go contemporary or I can go vintage – it just has to be of the heart,” she says. “When I find a spoon in the middle of an antiques store, I must have that one spoon and I put it with the rest of the spoons, and they’re like, ‘Hi, hey, where have you been? We’re all the same here’.” The same goes for her lifestyle collection, with all manner of tea towels, frocks, capes, bangles and baskets sold via her online shop. She is working on new pieces to sell for Christmas.

“They are just beautiful handmade products that make ordinary daily chores a little more nourishing and enjoyable. I don’t want this to be a fast fashion kind of thing. It’s more about adding to your collection.” Roll-on travel fragrances are a new thing, launched after a month-long holiday in Morocco, where she came across a herbalist in Marrakesh. “When you travel with an open heart, good things come in ... you meet people and special things happen.” shop.kararosenlund.com

TALENTED TRIO … The show includes (clockwise from above) Abie Loy Kemarre’s Bush Hen Dreaming and Bush Leaves, and Margaret Loy Pula’s Anatye (Sweet Potato).

Desert dreams dawn Vibrant works by three generations of artists tap the Red Centre’s creative wellspring PHIL BROWN Arts Editor The story of indigenous art is one of the great tales of our culture. The amazing wellspring of creativity that has flowed from indigenous communities over the past 30 years is a good news story. A great news story, in fact. This is exemplified in the work of Kathleen Petyarre, Margaret Loy Pula and Abie Loy Kemarre. Their work is now showing at Mitchell Fine Art in the exhibition Ambatye Urrpetye – My Family. This trio is part of a great indigenous art dynasty. Kathleen Petyarre is one of seven

Petyarre sisters, all renowned artists, and the mother of Margaret and grandmother of Abie. Their work depicts culture, tradition and stories from the past. The artists of the Utopia community in central Australia have been at the forefront of the indigenous art movement and that continues generation after generation. Gallery director Mike Mitchell has worked with these artists closely over the years and he is awestruck by the talent of these women in particular. “I don’t think there has been another Australian family that has had the depth of talent in the visual arts as those connected to Kathleen Petyarre,” Mike says. “Her work has been compared to Rothko and Pollock, and what she has started continues to flourish. “Now at a very advanced age and in ill health, she has not painted for several years. Her works are sought after and her influence continues.”

Her work has been compared to Rothko and Pollock

Kathleen’s work has been collected internationally and she is even represented in the royal collection of the Queen. In recent years Margaret Loy Pula’s work has also gained a wider audience and now Margaret’s daughter, Abie, is turning heads, with collectors here and abroad keen on her work. As Mike says, the works in this current show all relate to country and the rich cultural heritage that these artists draw on. “The construction is multiple layering of outrageously fine dotting that creates abstract landscapes,” Mike says. “There is a multidimensional

sense to the work that draws the viewer in with its hypnotic optical characteristics.” The works all evoke the desert and the dreaming. These are abstract works that can be read that way in aesthetic terms but they are also representational in the sense that they map country and cultural lore. Works such as Abie Loy Kemarre’s Bush Hen Dreaming and Kathleen Petyarre’s Bush Seed Dreaming demonstrate that. And this exhibition is a window into their world. FAMILY TIES ... Jimi Bani’s first Brisbane show will be with his mum on stage.

There is no prouder Queenslander than actor and comedian Jimi Bani who finally stars on his home stage. Jimi feels he has scored a State of Origin call-up with the premiere of My Name is Jimi at South Brisbane’s Bille Brown Studio. It is the first time the star of TV shows including Redfern Now and Mabo will perform in Brisbane. “I’ve been representing Queensland all of this time – now I finally have a home-ground advantage,’’ he says. Jimi, 35, of Cairns, is also excited that his family will be able to see him perform. In fact, some of his family members are part of the show. My Name is Jimi, based on a story by Jimi and his late dad Dimple Bani, features four generations of Jimi’s family – brothers, mother, grandmother and son Dmitri, 15.

“It will be wonderful to turn around on stage and see my mum and family on stage with me,’’ he says. Jimi is from Mabuiag Island, part of the Torres Strait Islands. He and his dad collected community stories, some thousands of years old. My Name is Jimi is set in the Bani family home and involves an evening of music, dance, stand-up comedy and storytelling as the family gives Dmitri a cultural education. “This play comes straight from my heart,’’ he says. Jimi became hooked on acting after his TV debut on RAN: Remote Area Nurse in 2006. The 186cm actor had originally left Mabuiag Island to pursue his professional basketball dreams. Web of intrigue By Vicky Roach SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (M) hhhkj Director: Jon Watts Starring: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr Running time: 133 minutes

WELL-SUITED ... Tom Holland uses his youth to good effect in this Spider-Man reboot.

CRE ATING A WELL ROUNDED RE TIREMENT At The Clayfield we believe that creating a great retirement community starts with knowing exactly what our residents are looking for. Things like having a GP on-site, as well as full time care and wellbeing staff who could focus on their individual needs were of great importance. An on-site restaurant was a must – a place where a dining experience could be shared with family and friends. And of course, modern facilities and a luxurious apartment to call home would complete the picture. Call us on 13 28 36 today and you’ll find that, at The Clayfield, we’re committed to doing what it takes to create a well rounded retirement.

To survive in a crowded superhero universe, any newcomer must carve out his or her own niche. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) employs his relative youth to good effect in Spider-Man: Homecoming. The 15-year-old protagonist’s fresh, unaffected perspective reinvigorates the second reboot of the franchise. It’s an artfully artless performance that makes the role his own. The humour, too, is natural and unforced. This doesn’t so much reimagine the arachnid superhero as reposition him – in a grassroots fantasy that’s of its time but is also classically timeless.

He’s an ordinary teenager with extraordinary powers (which include “disappearing” his baggy boxer shorts underneath Spidey’s spray-on suit). And after his first Avengers training encounter he is barely able to concentrate at school. He cancels his extra-curricular activities to be available for an Avengers call. It doesn’t happen, so Parker takes matters into his own hands, chasing down bag snatchers and petty thieves. Parker even contemplates using his new alter ego to impress the girl (Laura Harrier). Jon Favreau has fun as the curmudgeonly Happy Hogan, hired by Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) as Spidey’s keeper. A split-down-the-middle Staten Island ferry, a lift-shaft rescue atop the Washington Monument and a high-altitude fight-crash sequence will keep action fans happy. But Michael Keaton’s everyday villain, Vulture, gives the film its edge.

QA has the answers RESTAURANT Tony Harper The incessant remodelling of James Street chugs along like The Little Engine That Could. And for anyone who has had New Farm and Newstead as their playgrounds over the past few decades, the Queens Arms Hotel – now simplified to the QA – has been a stalwart, changing ownership and direction, perhaps leaving behind its halcyon days, but always retaining its place as a local pub in a fast-morphing suburb. Its latest remodelling has been drastic and bodacious, adding a slick Sage Hotel in what was the vacant lot next door, and popping a slightly upmarket restaurant – Botanical – in the space that I reckon (although my theory isn’t without its critics) previously housed the drive-through. It’s the sort of room that reeks of what it is – recently reclaimed and made over by expensive designers. It looks great. It’s long and thin, almost atrium-like, and lofty. The focal point is the bar at the far end and its lavish display of spirits (gin-obsessed). The rest is designerorganic, blonde-wood tables, a run of rather healthy planter boxes just out of reach, exposed bricks, wood. Next door is the pub dining room: less eclectic, more pub dining, albeit a very good rendition. Botanical divides its food into notquite kilojoule-count, but more the effort it takes to consume them: Lighter, Larger, Smaller, Cleaner, Sweeter. I guess we all need an angle. I’m intrigued by the Cleaner

To me it sounds the best of a difficult-to-eat bunch but I like the theme of ancient grain and kind of hope the preserved lemon will add some interest, and I’m well overdue to be cleansed. But it’s unavailable. Apparently it has never actually made an appearance. Ah well, stranger things have happened. What does arrive is good. There is a cracking plate of ocean king prawns with garlic, chilli and wine ($17.90), simple, classic.

UPMARKET ... Botanical; and (inset) Grimaud duck breast with watermelon and feta.

Game Farm quail on a pear tatin with vincotto and radicchio ($18.90) features too much radicchio, too much tatin for two quail, but is otherwise terrific. Also in the mix is Borrowdale pork cutlet off the bone with apple, cauliflower puree ($35.90); asparagus, pecorino and 63-degree egg ($8.90); duck fat potato scallops ($7.90);

Grimaud duck breast, confit maryland, compressed watermelon and Persian feta ($37.90); and a few other bits and bobs. Aside from overcooked asparagus and egg that is still shedding water, it’s all nicely done and cleverly conceived. Better, in fact, than you’ll find in all but a couple of Brisbane’s best pubs.

Osteoporosis, the disease of extremely low bone density, affects 1 in 3 women over the age of 50*. A BMD test is a specialised, non-invasive scan that assesses the density of your bones. It provides diagnostic quality information about bone strength, as well as risk of fractures. SUPER SLEUTH So what exactly did happen in the house you’re thinking of buying?

BACK IN BLACK Hilltop home boasts a hue with a view

Exotic hit Give your dinner an irresistible aroma with a dash of truffle We’re deep in the heart of truffle hunting season. It’s a fleeting period, so I use them in all my menus. Eggs in myriad forms love truffle. Roast chicken with truffle is transcendent, or grate it over pasta, soups, salads or stews. It’s hedonistic but a little goes a long way. The method for the puree is the “take home” from this week’s recipe. It’s a simple method that delivers an extraordinarily silky result. Happy hunting!

TRUFFLED CHICKEN, CORN, KALE INGREDIENTS 1 small truffle 120g butter, softened 2tbs chopped tarragon 4 chicken breasts, skin on Sea salt and fresh-milled pepper 3tbs extra virgin olive oil 3 ears of corn 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 bunch kale, leaves stripped from stem ½ lemon METHOD Preheat oven to 180C. Finely slice a quarter of the truffle. Finely grate the rest and mix with half the butter and the tarragon. Spread under the skin of breasts, placing a few of the slices on top of the butter but under the skin. Season generously. Heat a heavy-based fry pan over medium-high heat, swirl in half the oil and half of rest of butter. Place chicken skin-side down and cook until golden. Turn breasts and place pan in oven for 6 mins. Strip corn from the cob and put kernels through juicer. To thicken, place juice in a bowl over a pot of simmering water. Keep warm. Heat remaining oil and butter in frypan over medium-high heat. Add garlic, then kale leaves and toss quickly to wilt. Add a splash of water, season, and a squeeze of lemon. Remove chicken breasts from oven and give them a squeeze of lemon too. Spoon truffle juices over chicken and rest for a few mins before serving with corn puree, kale and remaining truffle. Serves 4. Styling: Lyndel Miller Picture: Ric Frearson

26 AT HOME

HIGH LIFE … Architect Shaun Lockyer used black panels to draw people’s eyes to the view from the grand home, which has a southerly city aspect.

Black is back

with a view The dark side of the colour wheel brings city vistas into sharp focus on a lofty site at Ascot

Black walls are not something Carla ever imagined she would have in her house. Worried they would look too dark and gloomy, it took a lot of convincing by architect Shaun Lockyer to get the go-ahead for his colour plan at the new hilltop home in Ascot. After all, he said, it was nothing that a coat of white paint couldn’t fix. In the end, Carla was more than happy with the result. “It is a big house and when it came to paint colours, I thought it would be nice to get a bit of weight in the house,” Shaun says.

Carla and her husband Chris bought the property in 2014 when it was just a dilapidated house sitting on a prime piece of hilltop land. Moving from a classic Queenslander in Hendra that required a lot of upkeep, they engaged Shaun to create a grand, modern home that would capture city views and provide plenty of space for the couple and their three children – Emily, 11, Tom, 9, and Ned, 7 – to rest and play. While not every wall is black, they do appear frequently throughout the home. The theme continues in the

kitchen, where black cabinetry is offset by Shaun’s signature timber handles. Even a wall in one of the children’s bedrooms was painted black to draw the eye to the city views. “Rather than the idea of windows being in walls, there are black panels and your eyes are drawn to the view, whereas if that was all white, your eye (would be) naturally drawn to the lightest thing,” Shaun says. Black walls also feature prominently in the lounge room, children’s study and downstairs media room, with accents in almost every room of the house. “We’re very happy with it,” Carla says. The media room, also known as

the man cave, accommodates a ping pong table, foosball table and gym that can be closed off from the rest of the space. The bottom floor also houses the wine cellar, laundry, a fifth bedroom and bathroom. Although facing the living rooms to the north on the ground level

wasn’t an option – with the city views at the back of the house to the south – Shaun says a southerly aspect has its advantages in Brisbane. “Living in the subtropics, in summer being on the southern side is fantastic because you get all the breeze and it’s on the cool side of the house,” he says. “A big part of the design was leveraging everything to be in sight of the view but then recognising where the north is.” On the deck, a cut-out allows for a wider view of the city without compromising privacy from nextdoor neighbours. Upstairs, the master bedroom enjoys the benefits of a northerly

position, while back on the ground floor, the children’s study opens to a north-facing courtyard that leads down the side of the house to the pool, in the levelled backyard. “Obviously, it’s a big investment to do this, but you’re getting flat land on a hill in Ascot which is worth its weight in gold,” Shaun says. Whether gold or black, the owners couldn’t be happier with their new home. TONYA TURNER Architect: Shaun Lockyer, Shaun Lockyer Architects, ph: 3257 7288. Undercover angles Three murders and a tree change – choose your read

UNDERSTORY Inga Simpson Hachette Australia, $33

The book cover sets the scene: a dirt road weaves through a dark forest, with the shimmer of distant light casting a spectral glow. From the very beginning, this moody murder mystery, Megan Goldin’s first novel, is full of sinister threat as two narrators provide the clues that follow the discovery of an unidentified body on Kellers Way. Julie West introduces herself as the pill-taking, jealous and paranoid wife of Matt West, a wealthy psychologist whose first wife was found murdered years before. The second narrator, Detective Mel Carter, is a tough cop who knows “you have to look beyond the obvious to get the truth”. But soon, as both women gather and present more “facts”, the harder it becomes for all to see the wood for the trees. A suitably gripping domestic noir that keeps you guessing down a trail littered with secrets, deception and insanity.

Crime fiction is king, but the majority of books and TV shows are set in the UK, US or Scandinavia. That’s what makes it so refreshing to read some Aussie crime fiction, complete with local police slang, written by a true-blue former detective. For me, this book gets extra points because the protagonist is a female cop, working undercover in the seedy Sydney underworld. Detective Lexie Rogers transforms herself into drug dealer Lara Wild, a character who rings true because Karen M Davis knows her stuff and can write. It’s not all good guys and bad guys, as Lexie is balancing tricky romantic relationships, family and police politics, which gives us some relief from drug deals and meetings in Kings Cross nightclubs. This is Davis’s third book, and the third featuring fiercely independent Lexie. I don’t think I’ll be the only one going back to read the first two.

When Inga Simpson moved with her family to a bushland block in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, she thought her dream had come true. As writers “drowning” in nine-tofive jobs, they wanted to head for the hills, with fresh air, an orchard, vegie patch and chooks. But things don’t always turn out as planned, and their move to a four-hectare block with “cedar cottage in misty forest” came with unforeseen, suburban-style problems, but on a more costly scale. As well as snakes inside, long commutes to Brisbane, errant cows in their yard from a neighbour’s unfenced property, and then being presented with a bill for the unwanted fence, their dodgy electricity supply left them without enough power to run an oven. Then the GFC hit, their plans to fund their “idyllic lifestyle” by running writers’ retreats collapsed, and Simpson’s partner left. Despite the trials, Simpson celebrates the joys of nature, the beauty of the bush, and how trees have shaped her as a writer. A delight to read for anyone enchanted by the hinterland’s rainforest ridges and valleys that are fast being subsumed by suburbia up and down the coast.

THE FACT OF A BODY Alexandria MarzanoLesnevich Macmillan, $33 This debut book from a former lawyer and now award-winning American writer is part memoir, part true crime. Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich offers up extensive research into the case of Ricky Langley, who was found guilty of the murder in 1992 of six-year-old Jeremy Guillory. In examining Langley’s three trials, she unearths a full portrait of the killer and his sad family history. But the author also weaves in her own personal story, from her first encounter with the Langley case as a Harvard law student spending a summer as an intern with a New Orleans defence firm, working to get Ricky Langley off death row. Despite being opposed to the death penalty, Marzano-Lesnevich is shocked to realise when she is shown a tape of Langley confessing to the sexually motivated murder that she wants him to die. Bravely, she starts to examine her own feelings surrounding a longburied family secret. The Fact of a Body is an absorbing, honest read which ventures into dark places, but always with a humane and intelligent voice. FIONA PURDON

Can they keep

a secret? Are real estate agents obliged to reveal a property’s murky past? REIQ’s Antonia Mercorella tells all When we buy an established property (as opposed to off-the-plan) we know we’re buying a property with a history, but most of the time we aren’t too concerned about that history. Is the property structurally sound? Is it termite-free? Does it flood? These are some of the key issues most people are concerned with when they are looking closely at buying.

However, sometimes a property’s history can include more than a growing family that up-sized their property to get a bigger yard. Sometimes the property can have a stigma due to recent events and these events could influence a buyer’s decision on whether to buy or not. In those instances, it is helpful to know what information you can

reasonably expect to get from the seller’s agent when they are showing you a property and what the law requires of agents in the situation of a potentially stigmatised property. A property may become “stigmatised” if it has been associated with an unsavoury event. While having no physical impact on the property, stigmas can affect the way some people feel about the property psychologically. However, this is a very subjective issue. What one person finds a dealbreaker may not worry another. For example, what if the previous owner died a peaceful death in their sleep after 40 happy years in the property? That is unlikely to influence many people’s buying decision. But in some cultures, if someone has died in the property, regardless of how the death occurred, it may be

considered bad luck to live in that property. So, to them, it is a stigmatised property. There’s no checklist that tells agents what they must disclose, but as a general rule if something is likely to influence someone’s decision to buy a property – a material fact – then it must be disclosed. The law does not specify what constitutes a material fact, but describes it as any fact that “may have a bearing on a reasonable person’s decision to proceed with a property transaction”. Common causes of stigma for properties include: • Death, such as a murder, suicide or natural causes; • Crime, such as an assault, theft, drug dealing, or sexual crimes; • Health-related issues, including contagious diseases; • Troublesome neighbours, such as the presence of a sex offender; • Environmental conditions such as soil contamination, aircraft noise or industrial odours; and • Psychological factors of significance to the buyer. For example, rumours of ghosts. This is an area in which the REIQ feels the Government should do more, and is advocating for a specific disclosure regime. It’s a difficult position for agents, vendors and buyers alike to navigate. More detail and greater specificity would help. The REIQ strongly recommends that every buyer does their own research before buying a property. In real estate, the principle of caveat emptor (buyer beware) generally applies, which is why buyers do their own building and pest inspections, flood investigations, conveyancing checks and other due diligence. Nothing beats being wellresearched when looking to buy.

Safe haven is the key There’s more to home security than a simple alarm system or ensuring the windows and doors have locks. Whether it’s a family household with young children or growing teens or a transient traveller continuously on the go, designing a home security system tailored to a specific lifestyle is important for people looking to cover all the bases. ADT Co security expert Darryn Bull says busy families that are always on the move need a security system that works with them as their family grows. “Parents of a newborn naturally want the very best protection they can provide for their new addition,” he says. “As the child grows and goes to school, working parents can use cameras to remotely check that the kids have arrived home safely, or are doing their homework.

“And parents of teenagers can benefit from knowing their sons or daughters have returned home after a late night by using programmed notifications. “Or if you spend more time living out of a suitcase than a closet – a business owner or executive, for example – your property could be a prime target for burglars. However, today there are clever ways to create the impression someone is home when the house is empty.” Smart switches can be activated from a smartphone, for example, while cameras can also be placed around the house.

Get the look Shutters are the ultimate window covering that can be used inside and outside the home to offer privacy, control light and block out the summer heat, says sales administrator at Cosmopolitan Shutters, Belinda Wolfe. “They are also energy efficient,” Belinda says. “Whether you are building a new home or replacing existing window coverings, you won’t find a window treatment that looks better, lasts longer and insulates more efficiently than our internal Thermoshield shutters. “The shutters come in a range of colours and carry a lifetime warranty. “They are made from a 100 per cent poly-resin material that looks and feels like wood, never needs painting and will not fade, crack, peel or chip.” For outside areas, Cosmopolitan

Shutters recommends its Louvreshield range of aluminium shutters. “They are hard wearing, easy to clean and can be custom made to suit decks, patios and balconies,” she says. 2/908 KINGSFORD SMITH DR, EAGLE FARM PH: 3268 5699 35/38 KENDOR ST, ARUNDEL PH: 5563 7440 1/10 PREMIER CCT, WARANA PH: 5493 8900 COSMOPOLITANSHUTTERS.COM.AU

Hamptons look is in Achieving a Hamptons-inspired look at home is about creating a seamless style of either classic Hamptons with a sophisticated mix of white, light oak timbers and/or ebony blackaccentuated tones, or the less formal natural hue of soft colours mixed with French white and French duck egg blue, plain, patterned and/or striped cream textures. That is the view of the proprietor of The French Corner, Gary Gardiner. “A Hamptons look can be enhanced with a mix of furniture pieces, sofas and large and medium table lamps which create stunning influences when combined with the latest Manhattan range of lights and lanterns reflected in framed or frameless mirrors,” Gary says. “Creating one of the world’s most sought after looks for our home; an inhouse interior design service is a

was that it was so spectacular,” Vince says. “When we got into designing it, it was all about entertaining for us – we’ve got two levels of entertainment areas. “And because I’m a bit of a car enthusiast, what was important to me was to have quite a large garage, where I could house as many cars as I liked. “So there is a garage here for eight cars and the garage is actually completely finished off as if it is the

rest of the house; you wouldn’t really know that you were walking into a garage.” The property also includes a suspended pool with glass wall panels and Italian tiles. “The engineering that went into the pool was unbelievable and it cost an absolute bomb, but it is the showpiece,’’ Mr Trovato said. Other features include a billiards room and soundproof cinema.

On the waterfront In addition to established gardens with extensive lighting, this tri-level residence offers more than 30m of river frontage, complete with an oversize deep-water pontoon mooring. A suspended-slab construction provides generous and versatile living spaces, with features such as stone floors and soaring ceilings creating a sophisticated yet relaxed ambience. Open-plan family, dining and kitchen areas on the middle floor extend to a covered outdoor space with a timber ceiling, surround sound and built-in barbecue area with marble bench tops. This area has access to a heated pool, the vast back yard and river beyond. The main bedroom, with a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite, also opens to the pool area. A rumpus room, separate living

room, library and an office are also on the middle level, along with a double garage and games room. Three more bedrooms, a bathroom and media room are upstairs, while downstairs houses a gym, patio, laundry and storeroom. Other features of the property include ducted airconditioning, an alarm system, ample storage, a spa, sauna, gas fireplace and an electronic gated entrance with video intercom.

High ceilings, VJ walls, leadlight casement windows and polished hardwood floors highlight the home’s historic feel, with split-system airconditioning, a security alarm and video intercom helping to bring it into the present. Beyond a courtyard entrance, with established gardens and a stained glass-feature front door, a foyer leads into lounge and dining rooms with pendulum lighting. A hallway then continues beyond to a kitchen and living and dining room with a soaring angular ceiling and clerestory windows. From here is a back deck with city views. Completing the middle level is a bedroom with an ensuite. Upstairs

Art Deco charms This offering in the heart of New Farm features four one-bedroom apartments on the ground floor of an Art Deco complex being sold separately. All the boutique apartments have the same layout with an open-plan kitchen, lounge and dining room, hallway storage, bedroom and contemporary bathroom with laundry. Each residence captures Brisbane’s old-world elegance with classic architectural elements, including polished timber floors, high ceilings, decorative cornices and ornate windows. Modern refurbishments complement this traditional beauty, particularly in the kitchens, which have been updated to include ample cabinetry, tiled splashbacks and quality appliances. A central hallway ties the floorplan

together, separating the entertaining area from the bedroom. The well-lit bedroom provides a bright palette and enjoys convenient access to the bathroom and laundry. The bathroom features decorative tiles and a window, as well as a combined shower and bathtub. Agent Aaron Woolard said the complex provided a seamless commute to the city and surrounds via CityCat or bus services.

Horoscope with Tanya Obreza SAGITTARIUS

CANCER

(November 23 - December 21) You may be feeling that the odds are stacked against you – or indeed that everyone is conspiring against you – but you would do well to view this as a test of character. Although you may not be able to control what happens to you, how you respond is entirely in your hands.

(June 22 - July 22) You tend to see things from a different perspective this week. Although you may feel pressured to make a decision, don’t commit to anything before you have first considered all the available options. A socially active Venus in Gemini also brings new people into your friendship circle. Life is turning out to be nicer all around.

CAPRICORN

LEO

LIBRA

(July 23 - August 23) There are times when you feel that you don’t belong. Other people just do not seem to understand your unique and inquisitive imagination. Happily, this week gives the rest of us dullards a chance to catch up. Communications start to improve, as do relationships.

(September 23 - October 23) That famous Libran charm will get you everywhere this week. You’re out to inspire and impress. When you present such a positive attitude, people just naturally do more things for you and with you. It sounds so simple, really – strange that more people don’t get it.

VIRGO

SCORPIO

(August 24 - September 22) If ingenuity is what is required this week, then you are well equipped for the tasks at hand. However, don’t trust others so readily. Sometimes, your genius can be left unappreciated, while in the meantime some less scrupulous individuals walk away with all the ideas – and the profits. Stay cautious.

(October 24 - November 22) When on a roll, very little can break Scorpion momentum. This week you are hurtling along many different paths – and at top speed. However, it does pay to ensure that you have your facts straight. You need to make sure that the case you are presenting is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

(December 22 - January 20) Unless the planets have taken to fibbing, you have pretty much got your hands full with family at the moment. Siblings, parents, children – they all make their presence felt. By all means be helpful, but skip the martyrdom. The best lesson that you can teach others right now is independence.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) It is the ethereal rather than the material that will likely capture your imagination this week. You can happily enjoy what you have accumulated up to now, but you also allow your mind to break away from your immediate financial concerns. It could be spiritual. Then again, it could also be love.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Potential pitfalls for Pisceans this week include anger or jealousy. If this sounds stressful, remember that it need not be. We all have our tetchy moments, but self-control is the key in

BRAIN FOOD Jackie Chan was to star in a film called Nosebleed, but it was cancelled after the World Trade Center attack in 2001. He was to play a window-washer at the centre who must stop a terrorist plot. The original Nokia company was established in 1865 as a pulp mill. In 1967 Finnish Rubber Works acquired it – and Finnish Cable Works – creating Nokia Corporation, which made paper products, tyres, cables, computers, TVs and footwear. If you suffer from chaetophobia, you have an abnormal and persistent fear of hair. The first man to appear on the cover of Playboy magazine was Peter Sellers.

these situations. Thankfully, the end of the week promises to bring some welcome fun. Those Pisceans on the hunt for romance have every chance of finding love.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Ariens feel confident and ambitious this week. Work could also take an unexpected turn as you attempt something new. If you cope well enough, you may be offered some retraining. And should someone ask your opinion on a very important matter, be sure to answer them with conviction.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20) This week problems hint at some bigger issues that no one really wants to discuss. And although you would rather not become involved, you may have no choice in the matter – primarily because other people’s worries are not as trivial as you originally thought. They have been downplaying them for some time, so as not to worry you.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 21) A certain someone needs careful handling this week. They’re mean and moody. No matter how blustery they become, avoid being dragged into their stormy tempest. Give this person a wide berth, or one of you will end up harbouring grudges well into the future. tanyaobreza.com
