HELLO 03 Are you a Dancing Queen or a Super Trouper? You have to be on the Money, Money, Money, because The Winner Takes It All in this musical Waterloo. I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do love an ABBA song. The international pop scene was declared Under Attack by the Swedish group after they won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, and they have since earned successive generations’ adoration. Australian audiences, I think, have a special affinity with ABBA because their music was embroidered into our psyche thanks to the iconic 1994 movie Muriel’s Wedding (oh, those white pants, Toni Collette!). The musical Mamma Mia! (cover story, P10) hits town soon, and it’s refreshing to hear that despite the hype surrounding the stage extravaganza, which was even turned into a 2008 movie starring Meryl Streep, its star – the Brisbane-born ABBA fan Sarah Morrison – is keeping her feet firmly on the ground. When All Is Said and Done, we are all a bit Head Over Heels with the super group. And ABBA – Thank You for the Music.

Truth be told Leesa Maher Her podcast is titled Confessions of a Twenty Something Train Wreck but Phoebe Parsons is right on track. The Red Hill resident, who works as a publicist by day and fitness instructor by night, launched season one of Train Wreck through Nova Entertainment this year and listeners are lapping up tales of her epic fails. “The episodes on dating, (car) breakdowns and dieting have had the highest number of listens, which doesn’t surprise me at all. If I had a dollar for every time a girlfriend has called me to whinge about one of those three topics, I’d have $138,” she says. Listeners have learned that Phoebe’s superannuation is tangled up in six different funds, she has run out of fuel on the ICB in peak hour, hasn’t done a tax return in six years and has racked up more than $2100 in toll fines. The 28-year-old is not remotely embarrassed about revealing her shortcomings. As she says, no one is perfect. “I’m a big advocate for unashamed honesty, plus I’m one of those all in or all out kind of people. I definitely don’t know how to do things by halves,” she says. “In a world where our lives are so heavily filtered, particularly on social media, I think it’s important to be brave enough to be authentic and prove that life isn’t always as perfect as it appears on Instagram.” Phoebe studied broadcast journalism at Brisbane’s QUT but never set out to be a podcaster. It was at the urging of friends, all too familiar with her real-life dramas, that she entered Nova’s Podquest competition. She won, and the resulting season one of Train Wreck wound up #23 on iTunes, smack bang between Oprah Winfrey and Tony Robbins. Now it’s just a matter of fitting recording sessions between her other jobs. “I don’t sleep, which in hindsight is probably why I cry so much. I’ve learnt to exist in a permanent state of professional overcommitment, which probably explains why my personal life is in a permanent state of chaos.” So will season two reveal success in the dating world? A Mr Train Wreck, perhaps? “I can’t say I have a type, but a sense of humour is a non-negotiable in my books. As is a passion for pineapple on pizza. Train Wreck for The Bachelorette 2018?”

08 LIFE
Phil Brown My ears were so frozen they could have been snapped off like potato crisps As you read this, we will be preparing to board a train from London to Inverness. And in case you’re wondering, yes, apparently it will be rather cold there this time of year. I did ask the manager at Culloden House Hotel, where we will be staying, what the weather would be like upon our arrival and she said it would be “autumnal”. Autumnal enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey, probably. I have been to Scotland twice before, both times in October, which can also be pretty chilly. I recall sitting upstairs in the open on a double-decker bus tour of Glasgow, and by the end of that my ears were so frozen they could have been snapped off like potato crisps. I couldn’t even feel my face. We are heading for Scotland this time to take my son back to the country of his namesake, Hamish Macbeth. Yes, I’m talking about the television cop played by Robert
Carlyle in the BBC Scotland series. We used to love that program and we happened to be on a trip to Scotland many moons ago when they were still shooting episodes. We drove from Inverness to Plockton, the town which was the set for the show (it was called Lochdubh in the show), and stayed at the pub there. We watched some filming in the driving rain on our first afternoon there and saw a few of the actors in the pub that night, but not Carlyle, who apparently preferred staying indoors at a mansion across the water. I’m not sure how our Hamish feels about being named after a TV program. We love Scotland and Scottish blood flows in out veins. My late mum was born Janet McLaren Scott and was Scottish on all sides. Her forebears had come to Brisbane from Dundee in the 1860s. That must have been a culture shock. My wife is a McLean, so you can
see that we are pretty damn Scottish. Which explains my love of tartan, I guess. And haggis. We were in Scotland for my 40th birthday and I had haggis for dinner. Love the stuff. I fully intended to have a surf while there but didn’t have a board with me. But I did check out a few Scottish surf spots and in case you didn’t know, there are plenty. We also stopped at a surf shop in the little town of Elgin and met the local lads who ran the store. They told me they dreamt of one day going for a surf in boardshorts instead of full wetsuits with boots and gloves and hoods. Hardy buggers, those Scottish surfers. It’s a romantic country, is Scotland, and the Highlands are gorgeous. For our first day in Inverness we have planned to go on a boat cruise on Loch Ness and, yes, if I see the Loch Ness monster, I will let you know. Since it will be “autumnal”, I guess I had better remember my beanie. In fact, I might wear two. Och aye!
Belinda Seeney As a book, Wombat Stew is a classic tale, beloved by children the nation over. As a meal, my version of Wombat Stew is less loved. In the wildly popular illustrated book, a dingo with dinner plans catches a wombat. In a marvellous display of subterfuge and deflection, the wombat and his friends rally to convince the budding master chef to throw everything but the marsupial into the pot. In my less-celebrated version, I, too, unite my family, but in deep distrust of the contents of my pot which, truth be told, often bears an eerie resemblance to the fictional meal. Wombat Stew was the catch-all name I gave to the creative concoctions whipped up in my crockpot when my children were younger and more trusting. Wombat Stew was – and still is – my emergency go-to when I’m at the end of my pay cycle, end of my grocery stash, end of my week or just end of my tether.
It’s never the same meal twice but it’s simple, more nutritious than twominute noodles or takeaway, and does follow a few, broad rules to keep it in check. Firstly, locate that one rogue onion rattling around the bottom of the pantry. Remove the skin, the weird sprouty things and the slightly mushy first layer, then chop it and whack it in the slow cooker with a glug of oil. Secondly, choose your protein. This can be either the cheapest cut of meat on sale at the questionable corner store or it can be the frostbitten chicken thighs adhered to the freezer wall. Whack those in, too – no need to even defrost or dice. Thirdly, scavenge whatever vegetables you can find: nubs of frozen spinach, a can of corn or whatever limp and tired vegies are lying rejected in the crisper. Fourth, raid the pantry and up-end a tin of tomatoes and any scavenged pulses, legumes or pasta.
Finally, grab whatever seasoning you can find: a fistful of herbs from the garden, the remnants of a spice jar or even a smooshed stock cube. Set the crockpot to low and slow, and walk away. It needs only a couple of good stirs for the tough or frozen meat to melt, the vegies to soak up the seasoning and the flavour to develop. Sadly, as my family matured, my poor old Wombat Stew needed an image overhaul. I hit on a simple formula for that, too. Firstly, plug the word “stew” into thesaurus.com and compile a list of synonyms. Secondly, embrace the food provenance trend and search an atlas for exotic-sounding regions. Combine the two for a guaranteed dinner winner. Now, I’m off to whip up Middle Eastern tagine, Flemish cassoulet and Transdanubian goulash.

Homegrown musical theatre star Sarah Morrison has hit the big time but is determined to keep things real. So in the lead-up to rehearsals for her latest headline role as Sophie in the blockbuster musical Mamma Mia!, Sarah had no qualms maintaining her temp work as a dental nurse. “It’s nice to keep busy and being a dental nurse is a fantastic skill to have between jobs,’’ Sarah says. “The more life you live, the better it informs you as a person and makes you a better performer.’’ So for the past few months, the down-to-earth performer continued her six-days-a-week cardio gym schedule, rehearsals, regular singing and acting classes, while also scrubbing up for work. Her hard-working mentality is paying off. Sarah, who grew up at The Gap, starred as shy and intelligent school-leaver Lisa in the Helpmann Award-winning, Tim Finn-led musical Ladies in Black for last year’s sellout debut season and this year’s encore national tour. But the 27-year-old knows her success with Ladies in Black offers no guarantees for the future. “Being in Ladies was a fantastic
education. I learnt what it’s like to have a big load in a show, but at the end of the day, the producers of the next show are going to cast the right person they want for their role,’’ she says. “Whatever show it is, you might be the best apple in the room but they want an orange. “That is why I don’t take these opportunities for granted.” Sarah showed extreme determination to audition for Mamma Mia!, which coincided with the hectic touring schedule of Ladies in Black earlier this year. She had to scurry back and forth across Melbourne to squeeze in two Mamma Mia! auditions (for dancing, and then acting and singing), in between the Ladies in Black matinee and night shows. “Not surprisingly, I slept well that night,” she says. She was pleasantly surprised that for her final audition, one of the candidates to play Sophie’s fiance Sky was a friend, Stephen Mahy, and the two were paired together. They performed together in a fourperson children’s show in Singapore a couple of years ago. “Stephen and I already had good chemistry ... because we were in this show with Stephen playing Dr Dolittle and I was a two-headed

unicorn. It’s a dream working with Stephen again. When you are meant to be falling in love with someone on stage, he makes it super easy ... he’s the total package.’’ She says she loves playing the “free-spirited” Sophie, who creates anarchy on the Greek island she lives on with her mum Donna Sheridan (Natalie O’Donnell), when she invites three men to her wedding, one of whom she believes could be her father. Sarah’s favourite scenes include performing Super Trouper with her three stage “dads” and the first-act climax at her hen’s party, featuring the song Voulez-Vous.
“I’m doing that scene and some of the band come and pick me up ... it’s brilliant to live in that party moment every night.” Sarah, who grew up listening to ABBA, says the role has extra meaning for her. Watching Mamma Mia! as a 12-year-old inspired her dreams of a musical theatre career. Sarah’s mum Anne vividly remembers realising with shock the extent of her daughter’s talent. It was when Sarah was 11, starring as King Neptune in her school musical at St Peter Chanel School, The Gap. “That was the light-bulb moment,” Anne says. “She was a quiet and shy little girl, and I thought she had a bit
of a part in the ensemble cast, so it was a surprise when she came out as King Neptune and with a huge voice.’’ Soon after Sarah talked her younger brother Dougal, now 24 and a graphic designer, into trying out with her for roles in a Peter Pan school holiday musical. “I won the role of Wendy and my brother played Michael, and the owner of the holiday pantomime told my mum we had something special and we started taking acting classes at Kidz-N-Co at Tennyson,’’ she says. Sarah then started lessons with Queensland operatic star Jason Barry-Smith and won a spot at Brisbane’s Conservatorium of Music
at South Bank before joining the University of Ballarat’s Bachelor of Arts Musical Theatre program. It was then she enacted her backup – dental nursing – as insulation against the gruelling road to onstage stardom. It saw her through. “I still get pinch-myself moments when I’m rehearsing for Mamma Mia! – I don’t think I will ever get tired of living this life,’’ she says. “If I had told my 12-year-old self where I would be today, I wouldn’t believe it. It’s a dream come true.’’ MAMMA MIA! THE MUSICAL, Dec 26Feb 4, $59.95 to $149.95, Lyric Theatre, QPAC, South Bank. qpac.com.au

Release your geek Kendyl Bailey Human nature is a tricky business. Some people are innately lackadaisical and content with mediocrity. Others are “changemakers” whose quest for bigger and brighter is ceaseless. Lisy Kane falls into the latter basket. It’s not that she has aggressively pursued success; the Brisbane-born video games designer simply does what she loves. Everything else is a bonus. A producer for Melbourne firm League of Geeks, Lisy has worked on the internationally released digital board game Armello (2015), Hand of Fate (2015) and Push Me Pull You (2016). She’s also on Forbes’ 2017

Because at the end of the day, I really haven’t been in the games industry for all that long. But when I realised I wanted to do it, I’ve just been going for it ever since.”
Lisy got her start in games the way most children do – “playing for fun”. “I was really just a consumer for a very long time. I love games. I love technology. I love the social element of games – so playing with my sister or playing games online with friends was always, and still is, a big part of my life,” she says. and creative industries, Lisy found her way to Australia’s own Silicon Valley, Melbourne. Her ultimate goal is to herald change and support females seeking careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. It was this aim that led her and other female tech aficionados to cofound Girl Geek Academy in 2014, which is geared towards helping young women learn technology and how to build their own start-ups. “I want to represent female game developers. That’s the main reason I’ve done all this … representation. Especially for young women, so they can see a woman in the games industry, doing cool stuff. “If I’d been in high school seeing someone from Brisbane making games, I would have been really excited.” girlgeekacademy.com

Changing face Fiona Purdon All that glitters leads to stage gold for Fortitude Valley photographer and burlesque show producer Joel Devereux. Joel, 25, a self-confessed glitter addict, has been applying his talents to creating shimmering costumes for Vanguard Burlesque, part of Brisbane Powerhouse’s end-of-year celebration, Wonderland Festival. The hour-long show, which Joel has co-produced with Lillian Lace, features 11 solo act performers including Ginger Foxx, Lara Love, Clara Cupcakes and Alyssa Kitt, who competed for the coveted title of Miss Exotic World: Queen of Burlesque in Las Vegas this year. “We like upbeat, funny and clever routines, and we like high quality,’’ Joel says. “We like to make our audience laugh. We have interstate performers who are debuting new acts including Alyssa Kitt.’’ This year marks Joel’s fourth show at the Wonderland Festival, which features more than 25 acts including American comedy legend Arj Barker and local songstress Emma Dean. Joel became involved with burlesque in 2012 after he started
photographing performers and helping them “with their looks’’. “I was initially drawn to burlesque as a spectator – it’s a free spirit art form and draws a lot of very creative and driven people,’’ he says. “It’s storytelling with costume, music and make-up ... it’s based in drama. “Australia has some of the best burlesque performers in the world.’’ He says his love of glitter has spilt into a new aspect of his life this year – face art. Armed with glitter and acrylic paint, he started creating make-up masterpieces for himself. He shows his work off when he goes out to nightclubs and events. “I just started to do it impulsively and I enjoyed creating a new look every week. I like to mix it up,’’ he says. “I do like the attention and recognition when I paint my face ... and you can never have too much glitter.’’ VANGUARD BURLESQUE, Nov 24-25, $35, part of WONDERLAND FESTIVAL, Nov 23-Dec 3, Brisbane Powerhouse, 119 Lamington St, New Farm, ph: 3358 8600. brisbanepowerhouse.org

Painted portals GALLERIES Phil Brown They say that travel broadens the mind, but it also broadens the palette. Brisbane artist Adam Lester has found that to be true. His latest exhibition at Jan Murphy Gallery, This Ole House, features painted “visual travelogues of the last couple of years of my life”. Travel is an inspiration and an escape for him, and in exotic Sri Lanka and South India he has found the perfect places to slip away to. “Sitting in my studio looking at the photos and sketches from my trip, I think, ‘I wish I was back there’,” Adam says rather candidly. “I’m in a studio in a quiet suburb on my own all day when I’m painting. These works are little portals and they help get me through.” Adam first exhibited at Jan Murphy Gallery in 2005, with funky retro images of ships, planes and even cranes. That retro feel still appears in pieces in this show including Dream house, which appears to be some sort of ramshackle gingerbread joint. Adam’s style is colourful, sometimes jaunty, occasionally melancholy. His paintings of Sri Lanka and South India are charming, unashamedly escapist and exotic. Most of us want to go to such places to get away from our lives. Sri Lanka has been a revelation for him. Adam and his partner Yazmin Thomas (she features in one of the works engaging in a spot of archery)

www.btq.com.au
were there late last year and he filled his days exploring, surfing, sketching and taking photos. “I surf my brains out when I’m there,” Adam says. “I love the food, the waves, the people.” Paintings of coastal South India include Kanyakumari fishermen, inspired by an area where few Western tourists venture. His paintings of boats and water, such as the work The Crossing, have metaphorical dimensions. It is, Adam explains, a group of pilgrims crossing the Ganges by the holy city of Varanasi. But it could be a group of boat people anywhere. I thought of the Rohingyas. “These works fundamentally act as metaphors and are representations of a journey or a devotion and that, to me, represents the whole creative process of painting.” Adam works part-time on the installation team at QAGOMA and spends his days with art, his own and others’. Working at GOMA, unpacking and helping hang the current Gerhard Richter show, has been a recent joy. “I get to open these boxes and see these works I have been in love with for 25 years,” Adam says. “I get to see works when it’s quiet, before people come in, and sometimes I linger in front of one and it’s just me ... it’s cool.”
WONDERFUL WORLD … As well as paintings of Sri Lanka and South India, Adam Lester’s show includes (clockwise from above) Arlo, Dream house and Y.T. at the rental.

Team triumph JUSTICE LEAGUE (M) hhhhj Director: Zack Snyder Starring: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller Running time: 120 minutes It takes time to wear in a superhero suit. Justice League, the fifth – and best – film in the DC Extended Universe benefits from the increased elasticity. The premise of this big-budget action fantasy, reported to be one of the most expensive movies ever made, is that Batman and Wonder Woman do not have the power on their own to defeat a new, supernatural villain. Superman’s heroic act of selfsacrifice at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice has left the world bereft of hope. Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds), a diabolical monster hellbent on the Earth’s destruction, is feeding off that desolation.
Mankind’s only hope is a ragtag bunch of damaged super-loners, none of whom is particularly good at social interaction. If they can successfully work together as a team, however, there’s a chance the fledgling Justice League can overcome this apocalyptic threat. Batman’s (Ben Affleck) brooding cynicism balances out Wonder Woman’s (Gal Gadot) pure-hearted earnestness. And The Flash’s (Ezra Miller) nervy nerdiness is a good foil for Aquaman’s (Jason Momoa) supermacho charisma. For a Cyborg, Victor Stone (Ray Fisher) is surprisingly empathetic. In his second proper outing, Affleck relaxes into the role of the Caped Crusader, mentor and benefactor to this motley bunch of meat-humans. Some well-judged moments of levity help (something that was sorely lacking in Dawn of Justice).
GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (PG) hhhkj Director: Simon Curtis Starring: Domhnall Gleeson, Margot Robbie, Kelly Macdonald Running time 107 minutes Goodbye Christopher Robin is the bittersweet story behind the creation of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, which were inspired by author A.A. Milne’s own son, Christopher Robin Milne. After World War I, A.A. (Domhnall Gleeson), already a celebrated playwright, suffers from the debilitating effects of shell shock as well as writer’s block. Unable to live and work in London, he moves his reluctant wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) to Sussex where their son Christopher (Alex Lawther) is born. A nanny, Olive (Kelly Macdonald), is employed to take care of the young boy while the Milnes holiday in Europe or party in London. Their blue-blooded, British style of absent parenting borders on neglect. Forgetting that Olive has been granted leave to visit her ailing mother, Daphne departs abruptly for London with no specified return date. Forced to spend time, alone, in his son’s company, the distant father begins to establish a genuine bond with young Christopher (Will Tilston,
above). When Milne writes about their adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with Christopher’s colourful collection of stuffed toys, the books have the same magical effect on his readers. Winnie-the-Pooh and Christopher Robin become more popular than anyone imagined and the young boy is thrust into the limelight. His ambitious mother embraces the advantages of fame and fortune. Robbie does a decent job of conveying the funny, charismatic side to what is essentially an unsympathetic character. Gleeson is solid, too, as the stitched-up author. Goodbye Christopher Robin is a dark, surprisingly bleak, behind-thescenes account of one of the bestknown characters in British literature.
HEROIC TRIO … Justice League’s Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Batman (Ben Affleck) and The Flash (Ezra Miller). Picture: Clay Enos/Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. via AP
Director Zack Synder (Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice) left the project in May, following a family tragedy. Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) stepped in. He also directed the scenes he had written. The collaboration has triumphed. I’m guessing here, but Whedon’s fingerprints appear to be all over the scene in which Wonder Woman
employs her golden lasso to trick Aquaman into revealing his suppressed emotions. But Snyder gives Justice League its gothic grit. As a director, he understands the visual language of graphic novels on an almost intrinsic level. He has the ability to convert those two-dimensional images into motion. VICKY ROACH

AMPM Fat Dumpling Often the West is accused of corrupting the foods of its Eastern counterparts. Chinese, Japanese, Thai … the dishes we’re served up Down Under are said to be worlds apart from the cuisines they’re derived from. Fat Dumpling bucks that trend, offering a bona fide cultural eating experience. The northern Chinesestyle dumplings are handmade daily – these pockets of flavour are proof that quality is a taste of its own.
For lunch, try the $10 dumpling and cold drink special. Choose from pork, chicken, fish or vegetarian fillings, and order them poached, steamed or pan-fried. Jo-Jo’s is iconic in Brisbane restaurant terms. For 40 years it presided over the Queen St Mall, moving earlier this year to owner Steven Ackerie’s homewares store, The Bach Living (beside his Stefan headquarters and inside his new lifestyle precinct), at South Brisbane. The new digs’ Hamptons-esque decor oozes charm and simplicity, enhanced by marble and wood touches. A huge open kitchen adds drama. But the main attraction is the food. A number of cuisines are represented including Asian, Italian and Greek, offering a quick culinary tour of the world. The green chicken curry ($24) is classically Thai: creamy and mild – but with sufficient kick for spice aficionados. The Lebanese mixed platter ($20, pictured) is loaded with Turkish bread, olives, cured meats and
dips. In the way of Italian, the arancini balls ($14) are simply delicious. And when you’re done with your meal, head to the adjoining homewares store for a browse. 170 Melbourne St, South Brisbane, ph: 3221 2113. Open Mon-Fri, 7.30am-9pm; Sat-Sun, 7.30am-10pm. KENDYL BAILEY

Social network RESTAURANT Tony Harper The Cuban sandwich has to be one of the more enjoyable creations to have sprung from North America’s rather limited culinary pool. I’ve eaten a few over the past couple of years, courtesy of a trip to the US and the mushrooming at home of so many Americano bars, burger joints and restaurants, most of them tied to the craft beer brigade. Cribb Street Social does both craft beer and Cubans. It appears to be tied quite closely to Mountain Goat (not a bad brewery to ally with), but not exclusively: its bottled list – 60 or so on offer – does everything from Asahi to New Belgium Voodoo. And it contains a heap of local brews from Slipstream, Fortitude, Brouhaha, Black Hops, Stone and Wood, and Balter. The wine list is a decent enough compilation of Australian, New Zealand and Argentine wines, with a few Europeans thrown in for good measure. Back to the sandwich. It’s a terrific Cuban – no salami, but chock-full of pork belly and ham, slaw, pickles and cheese, on a nicely rustic toasted baguette. And it comes with a handful of really good, chunky fries, sprinkled with salt and rosemary, and some rocket leaves ($17). There’s something intriguing and satisfying about a Cuban – the abundance of meat, the cut of the pickle, the way it straddles a sandwich and a toastie.
It’s part of the lunch/brunch menu – a smaller, faster, dedicated range – that has burgers, salads, a pie, steak, fish, pasta and a good number of sides and add-ons. The pie ($17.50) changes – lamb and rosemary on my visit – and is one of those lazy versions with a stew in a bowl, disc of pastry on the top. I don’t reckon it’s really a pie. I want a pastry base (short pastry, preferably), moistened by the contents and soaking up some sauce. That’s a pie. Dinner has a bigger, broader selection, with a dozen small plates and a smaller number of large. And they hold far more interest and range than the lunch stuff – braised pork cheek, brains, slow-cooked sticky brisket with salsify and horseradish ($26), buffalo steak ($28) – very Fred Flintstone, wild boar and plenty of other less exotic stuff. Desserts look as though they’ve been mulled over, considered and put together with imagination and flair. There are five – chocolate sabayon, profiterole and eclair-tasting plate,
CLEVER CUISINE … Cribb Street Social’s delightful profiterole and eclair-tasting plate.
orange custard fool, cheesecake pops and affogato ($12-$21). It all happens in a sleek, modern, airy space – as much outdoors as in – on the corner of Little Cribb and Cribb Sts, across the road from where the Thai Orchid lived (where did it go?). It’s quite relaxed – no finery or formality – but there’s detail in the service and effort has obviously been put into the decor. It looks terrific. Is it attempting to be a craft beer bar? I don’t think so. It peddles craft beer, but that’s just a link in the chain of what is a clever, modern bistro.

TRIBAL BEAT Travels to PNG inspire a young family’s apartment
MAKING A SPLASH A rooftop pool and spa transform an inner-city terrace
Perfectly sinful with Alastair McLeod Like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, these are a few of my favourite things. When I shot this dish with photographer extraordinaire Miranda Porter, I was concerned that it was an unrefined assembly of crunchy, bittersweet chocolate naughtiness. Yet, when we tasted it – perks of the job – it was a lesson that combining crunchy, buttery pastry with a silky chocolate cream isn’t half bad. I imagine once the von Trapps made it to Switzerland they would have enjoyed this as much as their beloved crisp apple strudel.

CHOCOLATE AND BAUPLE NUT MILLE-FEUILLE INGREDIENTS 100g macadamia nuts 220g caster sugar 500g puff pastry, cut into two 12cm x 25cm rectangles 1 egg, beaten 330g dark chocolate, finely chopped 40ml Irish whiskey 450ml thickened cream 1 punnet blueberries Edible flowers such as rose geranium METHOD Preheat oven to 200C. Roast macadamias for 6 mins then cool, chop and set aside. Place sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat and cook to a dark caramel, around 4 mins. Remove from heat, swirl in
macadamia, then pour on to a sheet of non-stick paper. Set aside to harden. Set pastry on a tray lined with baking paper, dock with a fork and brush with beaten egg. Chill for 1 hour, then set a wire rack on top to help the pastry rise evenly and bake for 20 mins until crisp and golden. Carefully lift pastry off tray and cool on the wire rack. Heat chocolate and whiskey in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, stirring until smooth, then transfer to an electric mixer, add cream and whisk to soft peaks, then chill for 30 mins to firm up. Carefully halve puff pastry rectangles lengthways with a serrated knife. Spread a third of the chocolate cream on a piece of puff, scatter with a little chopped praline and a third of the blueberries, and sandwich layers together. Top with icing sugar, praline crumble, berries and flowers. Slice with a large serrated knife. Serves 6 Alastair McLeod is chef-owner of Al’Freshco Catering. alfreshco.com.au

CALMING INFLUENCE … The interior of the apartment, designed by Louise Walsh.
A family’s Papua New Guinean heritage and love of nature provided interior designer Louise Walsh with the building blocks to create this striking and eclectic apartment in West End. The couple and their three young children moved into the new apartment building overlooking the Brisbane River this year, and wanted to personalise the space by highlighting their precious and sentimental handcrafted artefacts from Papua New Guinea, passed down through generations. “Being quite a new apartment development, we felt the interior needed to be injected with more warmth and heart which reflected the clients’ heritage, and more so their relaxed and loving nature,” Louise says. Tasked with creating a fun family home mixing new and old pieces, Louise set to work designing warm and flexible spaces within the compact living areas, and providing multiple zones to enjoy quiet reading, river views and family entertaining. “They wanted the interior to reflect them. It was important the interior had a vibrancy and playful aesthetic

which reflected their personality,” she says. “They enjoy quiet time in the home reading books but also required the space to be flexible to host family and friends.” Although the apartment was new, the flooring, wall colours, pendant lights and joinery units weren’t to their liking. “They wanted to create a warmer home and needed far more storage,” Louise says. To customise the space, the timber floors and feature pendants were changed and the joinery remodelled to create more storage space and better suit their needs. Starting with the floor plan, Louise developed elevations and sketches to determine the correct proportions in each room. “At all times we keep the clients’ brief in mind and move ideas around until we have found the perfect layout, balance and focal point for each area.” Layering from the floor up, she chose tribal print rugs, furniture and furnishings in earthy tones of dusty pink, bottle green, rich reds and neutrals, with accents of charcoal and natural materials such as timber, wool and linen. Art, decor and styling items such as
jute woven baskets and etched earthenware were then added to tie the whole scheme together. Brighter colours including pinks, yellows and blues were added to the children’s bedrooms to create youthful and playful spaces where the children could hang out. “The fabrics and furniture selected are all robust enough to handle everyday use by a young family while remaining timeless.” Although she has studios in both Brisbane and Sydney, Louise mostly works from her beachside studio at Lennox Head on the northern NSW coast, with her team of designers and her kelpie Kobi by her side. There is something about living by the sea and travelling between cities that Louise says helps ground her in nature and feel inspired by the world around her to do her best work. “Our projects take us to busy site meetings in busy cities around Australia and the globe, and then we quietly return to our little bit of beachside paradise to design and create unique havens for our clients,” she says.

SLEEPING BEAUTIES
THE PASSAGE OF LOVE
NOW LET’S DANCE
Laura Purcell Bloomsbury Raven, $20
Stephen King & Owen King Hachette, $33
Alex Miller Allen & Unwin, $33
Karine Lambert Hachette, $30
Fans of gothic ghost stories will love this debut novel, set in a crumbling, haunted country estate. It builds spine-chilling tension by covering different time periods. Newly widowed and heavily pregnant Elsie inherits The Bridge estate from her husband. Horrific events ensue, including the discovery in a locked room of old wooden figures which bear an amazing human likeness. Also in the locked room is a 200-year-old diary revealing the evil which invaded the house in 1635 and which threatens to bring tragedy to the current Victorian occupants. A confident and gripping debut by a new author.
If the idea that all around the world women are falling asleep, growing cocoon sacks and if woken become rabid doesn’t stop you in your tracks, then the demonising of women might. But not quite as you might think. Masterful writer Stephen King and son Owen have partnered to create Sleeping Beauties, a work that juggernauts across 700 pages, with possibly too many characters, all of whom are facing a world without women. In the small town of Dooling, West Virginia, a scenario is set which may be too familiar for fans. It’s part horror, part fairytale, with lashings of magic against a backdrop of gender politics.
This new novel by two-time Miles Franklin Award winner Alex Miller explores the art of living and the nature of a literary life – when not writing is akin to dying. These themes play out across a world that ignites with as much anger and grief as it does passion and hope. Miller has penned a nostalgic work of fiction drawing richly from the fabric of his own life. The novel follows central character Robert Crofts for roughly 13 years, from when he is a 21-year-old man in North Queensland, to Melbourne, entertaining both dreams and the reality of working as a writer while navigating relationships with beautiful women. Miller writes about himself in sensuous, rich prose.
French novelist Karine Lambert’s first novel sold more than 120,000 copies in France, and her latest novel Now Let’s Dance is already a bestseller in France and Germany. It’s a quaint and quietly charming story of an unlikely match much later in life. “Upright, delicate, fragile, she made him think of a character in a novel. And then saying what she did about her loneliness. That had touched him.” So says Marcel, who has lost everything until he meets an unlikely match in Marguerite. Perhaps the translation renders the form a little broken, but this is a delightful, tender book about the passage of grief, the ageless art of falling in love and struggling with others’ expectations.

Splashing success Tonya Turner An underused terrace has been transformed into a state-of-the-art outdoor pool area at this multi-level Petrie Terrace home. The owners engaged landscape designer Aaron Worth of Utopia Landscape Design to transform the existing rooftop terrace above the garage into a pool and entertaining area that invited the couple and their two teenage children outside from the upper levels and balcony. Additional structural support was given to the concrete garage roof to hold the fully tiled raised concrete pool and spa. Elements of interest including a bench seat, day bed, water feature spilling from the spa, pool window and timber stairs were layered to gradually rise to the height of the pool and create an aesthetically balanced landscape. Working with the existing outdoor kitchen and dining area – complete with pizza oven, barbecue and drinks fridge – Aaron added a cedar and glass awning for additional weather protection. To create a unique and distinctive space, a variety of materials was used, including black granite tiles, pearlescent mosaic pool tiles, merbau timber, rusted COR-TEN steel planters and textured wall panels. In the gardens, Aaron used a selection of plants including Cordyline ‘Negra’, native gardenia (Randia fitzalanii), Liriope ‘Evergreen Giant’, variegated mondo grass and Evolvulus ‘Blue Eyes’.
To complete the project, pool and outdoor lighting were installed and the pool equipped with a Wi-Fi control system. Invitation accepted. utopialandscapedesign.com.au Pictures: Darren Kerr Photography

SCORPIO
(March 21 - April 20) Best day: Tuesday 28th Your love life would benefit from an honest heart-to-heart. This week is about growing closer and getting to know each other better, as well as making joint plans. If it’s a new start you’re after, open both heart and mind, and witness what wonders honesty can bring.
(October 24 - November 22) Best day: Friday 24th How long you intend to put up with other people’s nonsense is completely up to you. Sure, it’s admirable to keep the peace and anger in check. But are you seriously going to sit in the passenger seat when the driver’s so obviously out of control? Regain your hold on things.

(November 23 - December 21) Best day: Thursday 23rd Speak up, Sagittarius. If you have something to say, now’s the time to state your case. Reading, writing or other intellectual pursuits should appeal. You may learn plenty to your advantage. Someone, or something, stunning may soon cross your path. Whatever happens, enjoy.
(January 21 - February 18) Best day: Saturday 25th There’s sexual tension in the air – something you may not have delighted in for a while. Coupled or single, you’re as attractive to others as they are to you. Expect high-voltage flirtations. Possibly, too, a special soulmate may saunter into your life as if they’ve always belonged.

(December 22 - January 20) Best day: Sunday 26th Generally, it’s consensus that rules. Right now, though, you’re drawn towards the unknown, and you’re about to learn that being the lone voice isn’t all that easy. Meet challenges with courage. Take a gamble, Capricorn – nothing ventured, nothing gained.
(February 19 - March 20) Best day: Friday 24th If you’re looking for trouble, you needn’t go far. Arguments and ego clashes are just part of this week’s whole package, with many Pisceans unleashing repressed anger. Perhaps, though, you should let go of those past hurts. Forgiveness frees everyone.
(April 21 - May 20) Best day: Wednesday 22nd Karmic laws apply this week. Look at your recent history to see whether to expect good news or bad. If you’ve been underhanded or deliberately deceitful, conflict or financial loss could follow. If, however, your actions have been praiseworthy, expect a delightful outcome.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 21) Best day: Sunday 26th Your born-to-please sign makes caring easy, but it also means you have a tough time saying “no”. This week, though, if bullied by a colleague, inlaw or that fickle friend, you strike back. That’ll shock them. The upside is that genuine loved ones will enjoy spoiling you for a change.

rediscover the joy of laughter. Late in the week could bring a new chapter at work. Finally, some well-deserved rewards.
LEO (July 23 - August 23) Best day: Monday 27th The early week welcomes introspection, during which you’re entitled to throw out as much spiritual trash as you like. Then concentrate on two main drawcards – health and fun. Just don’t overdo it. Overindulgence could trigger an old ailment, and you don’t want to go down that road.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 22) Best day: Saturday 25th Remember this, Virgo: you’re the one who’s thinking straight this week. It’s you who’s quietly planning a sensible course, while everyone else is fad surfing. Don’t let others underrate your efforts or reveal your shortcomings. Stay in control and success should soon roll in.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 23) Best day: Wednesday 22nd Fate, in its wisdom, is pointing you in a new direction – one that may feel less secure than you’d like, but which is nevertheless precisely what you need.
