“People think making healthy food takes a lot of effort. It doesn’t” - Jacqui Toumbas
TAKE A PEEK INSIDE SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND’S PRESTIGE PROPERTIES
02 HELLO I am going to choose just one thing on the list of #healthinspo ideas (P9) and do it this week. It will be number 3: Go to sleep. I WILL turn off UnReal on Stan after just one episode instead of pushing through to the finale. I WILL put that book down even if I only have two chapters left. And I will be much happier the next morning. And then, I will take the second step, and a third. What will you choose to do? For extra inspiration, Jacqui Toumbas, owner of West End’s Miss Bliss Whole Foods Kitchen (P12), proves healthy food need not be all hummus and carrot sticks. Avowed pork belly-lover Tony Harper tries restaurant Cheeky Poke (P17) for some dietary rehab, and has a revelatory experience. See you in The Sunday Mail Bridge to Brisbane in August, healthier and happier and ready to run!

THE CHAT
Only the brave Geoff Shearer In a world more connected globally than ever before, the assumption would be that interior design trends come and go at a rapid rate. Not so, says international design stylist and House Rules judge Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen who believes the internet is more a tool of inspiration, rather than incarnation. He cites Pinterest as an example, saying it has created seemingly unlimited access to decor inspiration. “People aren’t Twittering each other or Instagramming together and creating trends – actually what’s happening is a kind of anti-trend,” says 53-year-old Laurence, of Welsh descent, who grew up in south London. “They are getting better at fulfilling their own thing. “I know for a fact it drives builders mad, because they go to a job and instead of being given a spec, or told what someone wants, now they are being given a whole Pinterest presentation of all the little bits and pieces, even down to the light switch.” People (“basically everybody,” the flamboyant raconteur adds in qualification) are decorating based on Google, Pinterest or “selling sites” such as Amazon. “There’s this new level, this new strata of information, which becomes an infinity,” he says. “You can fall in love with the idea of a brass light switch; but then you can take that brass light switch through infinite degrees of variation until you find the one that’s got your name on it.”
The results, though, are pleasingly individual, which is a primary design rule Laurence is keen to underline. Being brave and sticking to your guns is advice he has been giving for years. He is disparaging of homeowners who “feather their nest” to appeal to outsiders. Opting for beige instead of your original desire for raspberrytoned walls with gold gilding is the ultimate insult. To yourself. “Please, please, be brave, just do it,” he says, “because if you don’t do it, you’ll never feel you’ve taken control of that desire. “When you do something crazy design-wise at home, you do it because you feel you deserve it. When you do something ho-hum at home, you think you are only ho-hum. “What’s great about your home is that actually the only people who ever see your home are the people you invite in.” And the assumption is that if they are your friends, then they will like it. Laurence, who has a big year ahead – he and his wife, Jackie, celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary this year and the elder of their two daughters, Cecile, is getting married – says Australians need to think big; and it is within their nature. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Australians have very big personalities. There should be a lot of very big decorating going on.” House Rules, Channel 7, Sun 7pm, Mon-Thu 7.30pm

08 LIFE
Phil Brown Writers, actors and artists lived there then and New Farm Park was our backyard We were heading for the Brisbane Powerhouse and had decided to park the car in New Farm Park. That is fine at night but on a sunny Sunday, forget it. Cars were parked either side of the park’s narrow ring road and there wasn’t a space to be had. We drove off frustrated but by chance found a spot in a nearby street and so we made the closing ceremony of the Festival of Tibet after all. “This place has gone ballistic,” I commented to my wife as we walked, and that led us to reminisce about the good old days. In our case that was the late ’80s when we both worked at the Daily Sun in Fortitude Valley and lived at New Farm. That was before it was discovered. People were just cottoning on to the suburb then but it was still kind of mellow. Lots of writers, actors and artists lived there then and New Farm Park was our backyard. When I lived in an old Federation
pile on Bowen Tce – Hampton Court is its ambitious name – I had a rickety old bike which I used to ride to the park. The park was popular then but nothing like it is today and the Brisbane Powerhouse was just a hulking ruin beyond the fringe of the park environs. I would ride around the park a few times and then park my bike at the lovely old kiosk that used to be there. I would take tea under the trees, reading a book and relaxing in the relative peace and quiet. Do you remember the kiosk? It burnt down eventually and was never replaced which was both a tragedy and a disgrace. Before we were married, my wife lived nearby in Moreton St. Eventually we moved in together in a funky old flat in Llewellyn St. We got married at St Patrick’s Church in Fortitude Valley and had our wedding reception at a hall in Balfour
St. The hall, like the kiosk, is history. New Farm is still a wonderful suburb but, boy, is it busy and New Farm Park is like the Queen Street Mall some weekends – too busy. But I don’t blame people for flocking to it. We have our memories, however, of a time when it was often quiet and a real respite from our busy lives. We moved away from New Farm in 1992, shifting to Melbourne for a few years. By the time we got back in the middle of 1995, New Farm had been well and truly discovered and we were a bit miffed about that. We haven’t lived there since but we are regular visitors. I love what the Brisbane Powerhouse has become and we like to take our pooch and promenade around New Farm Park with everyone else … if we can get a parking space. What’s the solution? I don’t know, maybe arrive by helicopter? We could land on one of the soccer pitches, as long as there wasn’t a game on. Just a thought.
Belinda Seeney Wedding fever has gripped the world. Well, maybe just the Commonwealth. Would you believe England and a few Antipodean outposts? OK, fine, it’s pretty much just a bunch of tabloids and people wearing Union Jack boxer shorts frothing over Saturday’s union of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The impending nuptials of a “lesser royal” – one whose only hope of claiming the throne hinges on a zombie apocalypse – have generated more interest than usual, due to the couple’s star power. The likely future Duchess of Sussex is a bona fide celebrity, acting in Suits, no fewer than five made-forTV movies and guest starring in two of the CSI franchises (NY and Miami, for those playing along at home). Her groom has a reputation as the “party prince”. When big brother Wills was getting ready to be King of England, Hazza was getting nude in Vegas. With this pedigree, I’m less interested in the ceremony than the party afterwards.
I couldn’t care less about the dress Meghan wears; all I want to see is the Spotify playlist that has well-heeled guests carving up the dance floor. As I write this, the hot money for the couple’s first dance is on Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Word is, Whitney’s poppy 1987 tune is Meghan’s “go-to happy song”. Mine is The Ramones’ I Wanna Be Sedated. Similar name, just as peppy but unlikely to play well with granny-in-law Liz. I reckon the final music choices will cause more agony than the seating allocations and require more high-level diplomacy than your average UN General Assembly. Have you seen the rumoured guest list? Harry’s pal Ed Sheeran would surely be miffed by a dancefloor dis. After all, Perfect is the song of choice for newlyweds the world over, usurping his earlier ballad Thinking Out Loud. Also suiting up for the big day is Elton John, who cancelled a couple of
(presumably clothed) Las Vegas dates to attend, his grand piano winched into the reception venue. Something About the Way You Look Tonight is a no-brainer and Your Song is a crowd-pleaser but I’d love to see him throw in a subversive song or two as well. Perhaps Kiss the Bride or Don’t Go Breaking My Heart? Or, if he really wants to shake up the establishment, Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting. I’ve also read all five members of the Spice Girls are invited. It’s like Posh Spice saw Beyonce’s epic Coachella set, complete with surprise Destiny’s Child reunion, arched one fierce eyebrow, turned to hubby Dave and said “hold my kombucha” before group messaging the squad. If they don’t perform 2 Become 1, Harry and Meghan are well within their rights to have Beefeaters escort the Girls from the premises. It’s also thought members of Coldplay have been summoned to the ceremony. Meh. I guess a lullaby is one way to end the party.

It’s a 10km or 5km run or walk, winding through the city’s streets, passing iconic buildings and crossing bridges, enjoyed by folks of all fitness levels. BE NICE TO YOURSELF
Wellness coach Valeria Ramirez: Many people experience stress without even realising it, Valeria Ramirez says. Pressures from work or at home are a well-known causes, but biological stressors are often overlooked. Eating the wrong types of food, not drinking enough water and having an
inactive lifestyle can all take a toll. “When the body is stressed, it releases a hormone called cortisol which causes the body’s non-vital functions, such as the immune system, reproductive system and digestive system, to shut down.” She says the best treatment is to train your mind to be kind. Make your health your first priority, practice self care, and stay calm in the face of adversity. “Stop and take the time to breathe,” she says. www.thewellnest.com.au

FOOD AS THERAPY
Sports dietitian Ali Disher: Feeling better from the inside out means choosing nourishing foods that reduce inflammation, strengthen immunity, promote a healthy gut and a sharp (yet calm) mind. Ali Disher says these three foods fit the bill for those looking to boost health: 1. The humble berry — rich in antioxidants, fibre and vitamins, these powerhouses protect our cells from damage (stress, sore muscles, weekend overindulgences), while also stabilising our blood sugars. 2. Oily fish (salmon, sardines) contain omega 3s and selenium to ease depression and irritability, sharpen our memories and reduce inflammation (less gut inflammation equals healthier gut microbiome). 3. Sprinkle pepitas on salads or in yoghurt — you’ll get iron to boost energy levels, as well as magnesium to tackle anxiousness. What’s more, pepitas contain the amino acid tryptophan, which makes serotonin (happy hormone) and melatonin (sleep hormone) — wake feeling refreshed and happy. www.appletozucchini.com.au

GO TO SLEEP
Wellness coach Valeria Ramirez: Ensure an adequate amount of sleep and adopt a winddown ritual before bed. We all feel better after a good night’s sleep, and it is key to a healthy lifestyle, benefiting your heart, weight, mind,

SHUN THE “SHOULDS”

DITCH THE SAUCE BOTTLE
Dietitian Claudia Cramer: Avoid processed foods wherever possible and prepare food at home so you know exactly what’s gone into it. “Not only is it cheaper to make meals from scratch, it also means you can include lots of fresh fruit and vegetables,” Claudia says. “You don’t really have any idea what’s gone into the processed foods with all the additives and preservatives.” It also benefits mental health, as the family can eat together. “The interaction really lifts your mood,” she says. www.cmcnutrition.com and more. Not only is sleep involved in healing and repair of heart and blood vessels, but ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. For a relaxing bedtime routine, switch off electronic devices, and read or listen to music instead. A drink and light snack before bed can also help.
about all those shoulds is so overwhelming that sometimes we react by doing nothing at all.” Replacing “I should” with “I could” reframes your thinking – it’s now about a choice to do something, rather than an unfulfilled obligation. “Choosing feels much more empowering, and is motivated by values rather than guilt. This technique makes it so much easier to put goals into action.” www.brisbanewellbeing.com.au

THINK “THANK YOU”
Lifestyle coach Jacqui McKell: Approach each day with a positive mindset and a sense of gratitude. Instead of concentrating on what is wrong with your life, or on the things you don’t have, give thought and thanks for what you do have in your life. Jacqui says: “If you’re exhausted from being at work all day, it actually means you have a job and you can pay the bills and have a roof over your head. “If the kids are fighting with each other and giving you a headache, remember that this is a phase that will pass, and instead focus on the loving, fun times your family spends together and be thankful for all the joy they bring you.” Jacqui also suggests starting a gratitude diary (either in a paper journal or online). “Write down at least one thing every day that you are grateful for,” she says. “You’ll find that the more good things you look for in life, the happier you will be, and cultivating an ‘attitude of gratitude’ each day can only be good for you.” www.creativesparklifecoaching.com

And when you’ve achieved your goal and crossed that finish line, celebrate at the Finish Village at South Bank, where there will be food and entertainment to help your recovery.
The 10km course starts at the Roma Street Parklands, goes down Hale St past Suncorp Stadium, over the Go Between Bridge, past the Cultural Centre, over Victoria Bridge, through the city and then over the historic Story Bridge and along the Kangaroo Point cliffs to South Bank. The 5km course starts at Captain Burke Park at Kangaroo Point, goes over the Story Bridge twice and then along the Kangaroo Point cliffs to finish at South Bank. LAUGH
Career and life coach Suzanne Williams: Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Suzanne Williams says: “Exercise is so great for us mentally and physically, but for something different to trigger your endorphins, get out and have a big belly laugh. Endorphins are the amazing brain chemical that alleviates pain and reduces stress and anxiety. “Physical exercise and laughter are the two best ways to get that endorphin surge in your body. “If you can’t exercise then get out and watch some live comedy.” www.graceandgrind.com.au

PERIMETER SHOP
Nutritionist Jacqui Toumbas: Start choosing wisely at the supermarket by perimeter shopping. “Yes, this sounds weird. Perimeter shopping — what is that?” Jacqui says. It means bypassing the aisles and heading straight for goods positioned around the edges of a store. “The perimeter of a supermarket is where you get all the good stuff — fresh produce: fruit and vegetables; proteins: red meat, chicken and fish; whole
grain bread,” she says. “Make sure you plan before you get to the store, never go grocery shopping when hungry — trust me, you will purchase many unnecessary items — and pick colourful, adventurous fruits and vegetables. Try something new. “We know fuelling our bodies with the right foods plays a major role in creating a healthy mind, body and soul. “For me, if it’s in my kitchen, I’m going to eat it. I make sure my cupboard and fridge are packed with healthy, nourishing options.” (Jacqui’s healthy recipes, next page.) www.missblisswhole foodskitchen.com.au

JUST LET GO
Meditation instructor Laura Elliott: Whether it be yoga, meditation or mindful walking in nature, Laura Elliott says practice dedicated to letting go of the stresses of the outside world, and becoming the observer, reconnects you to your core. “Being able to sit with yourself without judgment allows you to transform your relationship to yourself into one of loving acceptance, and imprints a state of gratitude for all that you have,” she says. “A simple practice like this can profoundly impact your perception of life and increase your happiness exponentially.” www. kulahealth.com.au

FIND A (REAL) FRIEND
Personal trainer James Kelly: James Kelly says his philosophy when it comes to fitness is all about surrounding yourself with positive and good people. “Forming good relationships with people who are health and fitness orientated is the key to feeling great,” he says. “Enjoy the feeling of working with others and achieving your goals. It makes all the hard work worthwhile. “Having people to exercise with keeps your motivation going and your energy levels up. “Training together as a group really does go a long way to helping achieve personal goals.” Facebook: F45 Training Enoggera

Not so humble pie They’re known as the Spanakopita Sisters, and Bernie Papagiannis and Annette Little are famous for their pies, made from a special family recipe. Annette reveals what makes them so good My earliest memories of cooking are making chocolate slice with Mum for lunch boxes. Being the eldest of five children, I would often cook dinner for the family before Mum got home from work. (My sister) Bernie would also take turns cooking dinner. We laugh now when we talk about lighting the big gas oven and having to hold our school ties so they wouldn’t catch fire. Our love of spanakopita came at an early age. My grandfather’s sisters would bring freshly baked spana to the house. I remember the paper thin pastry, the salty bitterness of the silverbeet and cheese and the smoothness of the olive oil that left that more-ish taste on your fingers. Bernie and I grew up making our own versions of our Greek aunties’ recipes. Back in 2009 you couldn’t buy homemade spanakopita, so we thought we would give it a go. Bernie and I make the pies under our brand, Spinach Leaf. We use fresh produce, prepped by hand. We handmake the pastry and handroll every layer of
every pie with marble rolling pins. Many Greek customers have commented how they remind them of their grandmother’s pie. We always taste our mixture to check for salt and rest the dough for at least 30 minutes. Our pies are sold whole at Samios Foods, Coorparoo, and by the slice at cafes around Brisbane. We will also be showing people how to make them at the Paniyiri Greek Festival. Food is a huge part of our family and extended family. When we get together, food is important. Everyone will bring along their specialty dish. As sisters and business partners, Bernie and I get along well. We have similar outlooks on life. We don’t argue much and are comfortable being upfront with each other and we have a laugh which is the best part. 14 FILM
What a scorcher with Vicky Roach CARGO (MA15+) hhhjj Director: Yolanda Ramke, Ben Howling Starring: Martin Freeman, Susie Porter, Anthony Hayes Running time: 105 minutes First-time feature filmmakers Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling’s low-budget Outback zombie horror is based on their 2013 Tropfest film of the same name. This film made the news in February when Netflix brought the global rights in what is understood to be a multimillion-dollar deal. This is a scorched earth scenario. The pandemic that is swiftly spreading through the population has its roots in environmental degradation – fissures caused by fracking provide the backdrop for one key dramatic
sequence. Cargo’s protagonist, Andy (Martin Freeman), has just 48 hours to save his baby daughter from the creature he is about to become after being bitten by one of the oozing undead that shamble aimlessly across the parched landscape. When not feeding on raw meat, the toxic enviro-zombies hibernate with their heads literally in the dirt. But it’s not all gore and guts. This is is a story of one man’s battle with internal and external demons as he attempts to transport his precious cargo to safety. Since Andy’s journey is clearly a solitary one, it’s probably not much of a spoiler to acknowledge that his wife (Porter) only stays in the picture long enough to establish the emotional parameters of the story. The opening sequence – which finds the loving, attentive young family
aboard a houseboat on the Murray River – seems just a little out-of-kilter. Their plight slowly becomes apparent when they break their own rules to board an abandoned yacht because they are running dangerously short on supplies. Infection drives them onto very dry land, where Andy encounters Thoomi (Simone Landers), a young Aboriginal girl who is hiding from her tribe to protect her father (the country’s flourishing first people deal swiftly and mercilessly with any afflicted). Resilient and well equipped for
survival, Thoomi turns out to be Andy’s daughter’s best hope. The protagonist’s protective paternal instincts run satisfyingly deep, even if Cargo’s ending feels a little bit predictable, even glib. Anthony Hayes’ ugly opportunist is descended from a long line of racist rednecks. But the films’ indigenous supporting characters aren’t as well drawn and I struggled with this. Cargo’s simple virus narrative proves remarkably effective. This strange little horror film quietly and insistently works its way under your skin.
AURORE (M) hhhjj
Since her amicable split with her ex-husband, Aurore has worked as a waitress at a cafe. But a patronising new boss causes Aurore to quit – only to discover just how competitive the job market is for a woman over 50. Further threatening Aurore’s sense of self is the surprise news that she is about to become a grandmother. “You don’t have to make the same mistakes I did,” she blurts out to her eldest daughter before she can stop herself. Not too long after, Aurore’s youngest child throws in her studies to follow her bloke back to Spain. Aurore and her childhood sweetheart, a silver fox (Thibault de Montalembert), meet in a chance encounter, and the story plays out as expected. Jaoui’s portrayal of Aurore is best encapsulated when she dances, alone, to Nina Simone’s I Got Life.

Director: Blandine Lenoir Starring: Agnes Jaoui, Sarah Suco, Thibault de Montalembert Running time: 89 minutes Coming-of-middle-age stories are becoming almost as prevalent as their angst-ridden adolescent counterparts. They tend to be funnier, perhaps because older demographics are better able to laugh at themselves (there’s got to be some upside to what is largely a downhill slope.) Aurore tackles the challenges of its menopausal protagonist with a light touch. As played by French actorscreenwriter-director-singer Agnes Jaoui, the titular character is warm, unaffected, and relatable.

Brief encounters GALLERIES Phil Brown I’m not sure how comfortable I would feel walking into a sea of petticoats. Artist Hannah Gartside (pictured) invites me to brush through her little forest of, well, slips she calls them. She has titled these suspended and partly shredded retro garments The Sleepover and they hang as a sculptural installation. This former Brisbane fashion designer and artist, who now lives in Melbourne, has come home for her show Fantasies at Metro Arts in the city. At the same venue, fellow artist Sarah Poulgrain is showing Conversation in Two Parts, a compact exhibition featuring video animations of her parents. It’s quite engaging and the rather odd soundscape from that work permeates the adjacent space too and somehow seems to suit Hannah’s flights of fancy on the wings of found fabric.
The Sleepover is the central piece and I brush past it a tad guiltily. I mean these are ladies’ undergarments after all. Nearby is a puffed-up suspended nightie entitled Distended Nightie and on a wall nearby is the rather delightful Dissolved Nightie in Lilac. New Terrain features a landscape of lace trim shaped, intermittently, to form a little fabric topography of pointed mounds. This Box features a mysterious, boxlike shape created with cotton lace with a veil of tulle over it. Hannah, 30, a former Queensland Ballet costume designer (this comes as no surprise) loves fabric and the stories it tells ... or suggests. She holds a degree in fashion design (with honours) from QUT and went to Melbourne to study at the Victorian College of the Arts and now works

part-time with Craft Victoria while she pursues her art. In an essay accompanying the show, written by QUT lecturer Dr Courtney Pedersen, it becomes clear that the seed of this current show was sown when Hannah was a student. As Courtney writes, “Her Honours project was a complex interaction of doll play and sewing, where she

evoked the presence of lost time and grief through repurposed men’s shirting.” This time around it’s repurposed women’s undergarments and gorgeous fabrics and she mines these materials for stories that are implied rather than articulated. Saintly sustenance RESTAURANT Tony Harper Don’t you reckon there’s something saintly about eating raw fish and salad? I surely do. And in quixotic fashion, it kids me that I’ve atoned for decades of debaucherous consumption. I doubt I’ve ever felt more noble than after a visit (during which I stuffed myself) to Cheeky Poke Bar. Thank you, fish; thank you, salad. Poke (po-kay) is a traditional Hawaiian dish, with its roots travelling back to Japan. If you like things raw, you should love it. Cheeky Poke does eight set bowls or you can build your own. There’s a gluten-free, vegetarian bowl with tofu for the protein ($16.90), quinoa, broccoli, kale, beetroot, pickled ginger and plenty of other bits. I’m growing fitter, slimmer and younger just thinking about it. If seafood doesn’t float your boat there is a wagyu bowl ($24.90) with glass noodles, spinach, enoki mushrooms, watercress, nori and a slow-poached egg; and a chicken bowl ($17.90) with wasabi peas, avocado, carrot, brown rice and corn. But the kernel of the menu is its seafood sashimi, and there are five on offer – salmon, tuna, kingfish, prawn, and scallop. Again there is a change in accompanying healthy bits. Tuna ($19.90, inset), for example, comes with black rice; salmon ($18.90) with coconut turmeric rice. I go for scallop ($18.90) because there is jalapeno in the mix. Plus black rice, cucumber, miso tahini, avocado and radish.
CHEEKY POKE BAR 63 Skyring Tce, Newstead Ph: 3625 0467 Lunch and dinner, daily Eftpos and major credit cards Vegetarian and gluten-free options Off-street parking SCORES OUT OF 10 Food: 8 Drinks: 5 Vibe: 6.5 Service: 6 There is a heap of scallop and it is brilliantly fresh. Options beyond the poke bowls include gyoza ($9.90 and merely OK); miso; edamame; taro chips; and a bunch of tacos with similar choices to the bowls. The taco bits themselves are made from either nori or wonton pastry, and I reckon the nori version is absolutely smashing, moistened by plenty of sriracha mayonnaise and chocked with good bits. The tacos beat the bowls. And there are miso broths (coconut and chilli; lemongrass and
chilli) on offer, again with various proteins, this time seared, and that delicious slow-poached egg. Finally, three kakigori desserts (slightly incongruous given the wholesome nature of the savoury stuff): Nutella and strawberry; passionfruit and lychee; green tea and strawberry (each $14.90). To wash it all down there are spritzers, cocktails, some really smart spirits, a plodding array of wines and an even more limited range of beers. You line up with your memorised table number to order food and
drinks, then wait just a few minutes for things to arrive. Cutlery is on the table. It’s minimal service, but the small interactions with the staff are pleasant enough and well-oiled. Aside from a few aberrant attempts over the past 20-odd years, I’ve never done the healthy eating thing. Somehow pork belly and duck confit just have more appeal than a mound of quinoa. But I could be talked around to this poke thing pretty easily. It’s uber-fresh, almost religious in its halo-wearing goodness, and it tastes pretty damned good.

Top care for teeth YOUR teeth may be strong, but they’re not invincible. Dr Malcolm Duff, principal dentist at Face Value Dental says teeth can crack due to trauma or being weakened by tooth decay or grinding — and even a minor crack may cause pain and sensitivity or open the tooth to infection. He says the sooner you can see a dentist after cracking your tooth, the
better the chance they can save it. “Depending on the severity and position of the crack, your dentist may discuss treatments such as bonding, veneers or a crown to restore your tooth to its original strength and appearance, or a root canal if the tooth is infected or badly damaged,” Malcolm says. “If you have a dental emergency, contact Face Value Dental in Brisbane CBD.” Face Value Dental is at Level 11, 138 Albert Street, Brisbane. Wonder wall for all seasons Michelle Bailey The courtyard at the centre of this Taringa home is flush with seasonal blooms but you won’t find them on the ground. That’s because architect Con Zahos designed a vertical garden system, making landscape an integral part of the architecture. “The vertical garden is the visual antithesis to the rest of the building elements, being glass, steel and ply,” Con says. “The courtyard has minimal planting, only lawn, so the vertical garden provides an opportunity for colour.”
Beyond the vertical garden’s aesthetic qualities, it serves other purposes. “The green wall completes the third side of the built form to the courtyard and provides privacy and seclusion to the master bedroom which is located behind the wall,” Con says. “As a result, the master bedroom is the most stable room in the house in terms of temperature.” Maintaining the garden has proven effortless due to a few considered design elements. “We integrated a clever watering system that funnels water from pod
to pod, vertically down the garden,” Con says. “The system can be expanded to recycle water and nutrients by integrating a holding tank at the base as well as fertiliser.” Architect: Loucas Zahos www.loucaszahos.com.au Landscape Design: Clare James Design www.clarejames.com.au Picture: Christopher Frederick Jones

refined Modern Milanese style meets industrial edge in this inner-city apartment with a sweet past By Tonya Turner
EUROPEAN FLAIR … A sleek makeover for the historic New Farm apartment.
Living in a building that played a key role in Queensland’s history was an opportunity that Elizabeth and Allan could not pass up when downsizing to a smaller abode. The couple bought an apartment in the heritage-listed Colonial Sugar Refinery, a New Farm building more than 120 years old, last year. They engaged Corinne Bolton of Elm Interiors to customise and modernise the industrial-style space while highlighting its original features. “Although the old space displayed the building’s industrial features, it lacked a connection between new and old. We wanted to transform the feeling of the space and give it a new life,” Corinne says. Elizabeth and Allan were drawn by the building’s history and its heritage characteristics – chiefly the exposed brick throughout the apartment. “Our apartment is just one apartment in a heritage-listed building. It was built in one era and transformed in another and we appreciate being part of that ongoing story. Of course we value the whole building, especially the exposed bricks, the heavy grey steel-framed windows, the apartment’s openness

and the most amazing views of the river, suburbs and the city,” Elizabeth says. Corinne was charged with connecting old and new elements and creating a contemporary Milan-style interior, while maintaining the spatial characteristics of the apartment. The Colonial Sugar Refinery in New Farm was one of five refineries owned by the company in major cities across Australia. It was built in 1892 when the industry was experiencing rapid growth due to technological advances in the refining process that transformed sugar from a luxury item to a staple food. While CSR’s refineries in Sydney and Adelaide have all but been demolished, the New Farm site was given a new lease on life when the company sold the building to Mirvac in 2000 to transform it into industrial-style apartments and make it the centrepiece of the Cutters Landing residential precinct. With their little piece of history secured, both Elizabeth and Allan needed to customise the space to suit their needs. To that end, Corinne created a dedicated study for Allan and a workspace within the library for
BRICK BEAUTY … Original brickwork was exposed to become a feature wall in the apartment. Elizabeth to enable them to work from home. “These spaces also have seating areas as a quiet place to read,” Corinne says. A central seating zone takes advantage of river and city views for the couple whose favourite pastimes are reading and cooking. “It’s a fabulous spot for evening drinks or casual meetings,” Corinne says. “An extremely open plan allows most of the apartment to be utilised for entertaining friends while taking in those city and river views, yet the bedroom zone is very privately tucked down the corridor.” To enhance the building’s individual character and ensure the new additions didn’t compete, Corinne selected a neutral palette of charcoal, oak and calacatta marble.
BOOK NOOK … The couple loves to read.
“These finishes modernise the apartment and enhance the colour of the original brick and grey window surrounds,” Corinne says. Inspiration was also taken from the couple’s art collection to ensure it correlated with the final design. “We have many treasures from across our life but what we treasure most is our granddaughter’s Year 12 QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) art exam piece reflecting her move from South Australia to the Sunshine Coast. It hangs in pride of place in our home,” Elizabeth says. It’s another little piece of history that means the world to this couple. Vintage stitches in time Fiona Purdon Natasha Lester’s wardrobe has undergone a major transformation off the back of her latest novel. The Perth author now wears only vintage and second hand garments after writing The Paris Seamstress, set in the fashion industry in Paris and New York in the 1940s and 50s. In fact she has already picked out the perfect 1950s McCardell navy sundress to wear at her May 22-23 author talks in Brisbane. “All of the clothes in the novel are based on actual historical pieces at the time. It was wonderful to indulge in descriptions of outfits that are authentic for the period. “I hope to buy some vintage clothing when I’m in Brisbane.’’ Having started out writing contemporary novels, it took a historical shift – with breakout hit A Kiss From Mr Fitzgerald (2016) about a trailblazing female medical student in the 1920s – for Natasha’s career to take flight. That first foray was followed by Her Mother’s Secret (2017), set in the early days of the cosmetics industry in the 1920s and 40s. Now Natasha’s historical novels have been picked up by US and British publishers in “a whole new level of wow’’. “I was completely gobsmacked by how many people bought the historical novels,’’ she says. “I’ve loved writing the books so much more, it’s a whole different experience. Fitzgerald I felt I was living in the book and from then on I knew I had found my thing.’’ Natasha, 44, of Perth, has been inspired by real historical figures for The Paris Seamstress including New York-based fashion model and performer Evelyn Nesbit (1884-1967) who was married to murderer Henry Thaw (1871-1947). The novel follows the World War II-era story of aspiring fashion
designer Estella Bissette who, seeking to learn more about her family including her mother Evelyn Nesbit, enlists the help of handsome English M19 branch spy Alex. “Alex is my favourite hero I’ve written about,’’ Natasha says. There is a dual storyline involving Estella’s granddaughter Fabienne, who learns about her grandmother’s mysterious past as she follows her
own fashion dreams. “I’ve always been obsessed with fashion and the beauty industry,” Natasha says. “I’m a self-trained fashion historian and I’m always buying books on fashion history.” Writing was a love from a young age but, thinking she could not make a career of it, Natasha spent 10 years in marketing. The corporate life took her to London and Melbourne, with the last two years spent managing the Maybelline brand for cosmetics giant L’Oreal. When she and husband Russell moved to Perth about a decade ago she began writing novels. Natasha takes her family, including her son Darcy, 8, and daughters Audrey, 9, and Ruby, 11, on research trips overseas. “It’s great to be on the ground and to do the research. It helps to bring the places to life in your mind when you are writing,’’ she says. “Being an author is the perfect family job because it’s flexible. “I can work during school hours and I can still watch school sports day. I work every night when the kids are in bed. Let us eat cake Prompted by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle eschewing traditional fruitcake for something more zesty on May 19, Stamford Plaza Brisbane’s head pastry chef Eilidh Fitzsimmons created this masterpiece. Prepare for an elderflower renaissance.
ORGANIC LEMON AND ELDERFLOWER CAKE Ingredients
Method
220g unsalted butter 220g caster sugar Zest of 3 lemons 4 free range eggs, lightly beaten 100g Greek yoghurt 220g self raising flour Pinch of fleur de sel salt 3tbs St Germain elderflower liqueur Lemon and elderflower syrup Juice of 2 lemons 2tbs caster sugar 100ml elderflower liqueur Icing 500g mascarpone 45ml elderflower liqueur 200ml double cream 250g sifted icing sugar
Heat oven to 180C. Grease and line two 15cm cake tins. Beat butter, sugar, lemon zest together until light and fluffy. Add eggs slowly, then yoghurt. Gently fold in sifted flour and salt, then add enough liqueur to create a dropping consistency. Divide mixture between two tins evenly and bake about 45 mins until skewer comes out clean when tested. Turn out on wire rack to cool. Make the elderflower syrup by combining lemon juice and sugar in a saucepan and bringing to the boil. Take saucepan off the heat and add the elderflower liqueur. When cakes are cool, cut in half evenly lengthwise. Brush cakes with syrup. Prepare the icing by whisking mascarpone, elderflower liqueur, cream, and icing sugar together in a large bowl. Spread icing on to first layer of cake, then repeat for the second half, and cover entire cake with icing. Top with edible flowers such as violas for a fresh bright finish. Serves 8

Horoscope with Tanya Obreza so making fixed plans might not be wise. Try to distance yourself from the chaos that others create. But if you feel that the confusion is coming from within, don’t be too hard on yourself. Truth is, most of our fears are selfcreated, so perhaps it’s only you hesitating before taking the next step.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20) Best day: Tuesday 22nd Faced with the choice of leisure or routine this week, the pursuit of pleasure wins hands down. You look ready to cut loose, and in the best of ways. You can also expect a shower of gifts or material gain. Even better: there’s more enjoyment in the home, and an improved rapport with friends and family.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 21) Best day: Thursday 17th Geminis love to learn. Many operate on genius level, but you’re also smart enough to know that you don’t know everything. Unfortunately, someone may try to provoke you this week, so if they want to debate you, you’ll happily oblige. But they’ll soon be sorry as you gain the upper hand.
SCORPIO
especially when it comes to travel and new ventures. If well prepared, you could soon be treading more lucrative paths. But as there’s still an element of risk involved: make provision for any sudden detours. Should money plans be delayed, don’t let this ruin a potentially fun time — the best things in life are still free.
VIRGO
(June 22 - July 22) Best day: Tuesday 22nd Work may be confusing, and the situation may not resolve itself until later this week, but life always has its ups and downs. Understanding this helps us to hold a more realistic view of our journey. Remember, just as the proverbial wheel can turn down, it can also turn up. It’s an eternal cycle.
(August 24 - September 22) Best day: Wednesday 16th Foresight has its place in helping you to be successful, but this week may find you trying to second guess the future. The result is a whole heap of ill-founded conclusions, some of which are just plain wrong. For now, leave prophecy to the psychics. The cosmos also advises more care with financial matters, as not everything may be above board.

(July 23 - August 23) Best day: Sunday 19th This is a courageous week for Leos,
(September 23 - October 23) Best day: Thursday 17th Right now things seem a little erratic,
CANCER
(October 24 - November 22) Best day: Friday 18th Scorpios tread their own path. Nonetheless, this week requires more of your involvement. Of course, you may think that others are trying to interfere. The truth is, they’re probably only saying what you need to hear, particularly regarding money. So when it comes to finances: not so fast. Some of your short cuts could end up being the long way around.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Best day: Saturday 19th Major planetary influences channel energy into communication and work. And let’s not forget about play. You will delight in the company of friends and family, even those who seem demanding. Those looking for romance should have little trouble finding it. Indulge in a few luxuries, and possibly a shared holiday.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Best day: Wednesday 16th Too many demands have drained the Capricorn spirit. No wonder you’ve scuttled behind closed doors. Take heart, my friend. A brighter time lies ahead. The greatest gift? A growing self-confidence, and an equally
BRAIN FOOD WITH LARA CURION Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-91) was the wildly successful children’s author Dr Suess. His first book was rejected nearly 25 times but he went on to write more than 60 children’s books. His bestseller Green Eggs and Ham was written to win a bet that he couldn’t write a book using 50 words or fewer. There is now a chance that life as we know it may occur on so-called ‘Goldilocks’ planets – they’re not too hot, not too cold, not too big and not too small. Our nearest
neighbour could live as ‘close’ as 12 light years away on a newly discovered planet, Kepler-62e. The platypus is gifted with an extra sense called electroreception. Sensors on its duck-like bill can detect the tiniest electrical field connected to movement and water displacement, giving the platypus a three-dimensional fix on the other living things in the water around it. An ostrich egg has to be able to withstand the weight of its very
expanding income. For some, this may relate to professional matters. Others look to resolve a mystery. An “aha” moment sheds light.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) Best day: Monday 21st Some Aquarians now put their thoughts to creating the future, while totally ignoring the present moment. Allow yourself to have goals, but achieve them in the present. The future is your artwork so paint it with awareness. Let whatever happens unfold as you walk purposefully forward in the here and now.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Best day: Saturday 19th Pisceans innately know that life turns in cycles, and that troubled circumstances are eventually replaced by good fortune. Professionally, if you don’t like the way things are, maybe it’s time for a change. Just don’t leave in too much of a hurry. There may still be alternatives to consider. It could be a matter of simply asking for what you want.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Best day: Sunday 19th Apply some self discipline, Aries. This isn’t the best time for tackling contentious issues head on. If your emotions are feeling unruly, send them off to the sin bin where they can run riot among themselves. Right now, you’ve strong ideas about what you want done and when. That’s great. But a bit of tact wouldn’t go amiss either.
ANSWERS large parent sitting on it during hatching, so the shell is a sturdy 2-3mm thick (a chicken eggshell is only 0.3mm thick). This means a fully grown human can stand on it and it won’t break. Bioluminescence is when light is naturally generated by living organisms and is often found in deep-sea marine life, rarely in land life (e.g. glow-worms) but never in plant life. With genetic engineering, could bioluminescent plants light our gardens, parks and highways?
