BRISBANE NEWS MAGAZINE
Entrepreneurial success usually begins with a fairly simple question: Should I do what I have to, or what I love? The three men at the centre of our cover story (P11) this week chose the latter. Each decided to take a risk and follow their passions, and we have a new class of well-groomed gentry as a result (thank you). Theirs was a leap of faith – which is exactly what dancer Alana Sargent (P7) took when moving “across the ditch” to Brisbane to join Expressions Dance Company. It is also what comedic duo Colin Lane and Frank Woodley executed – while wearing gigantic (albeit goofy) smiles – when deciding to reunite (P15). And it’s a move that was performed with style by former piano teacher Rachael Turner, who now owns her own construction company (P23). Do you do what you love?

DESTINY … Dancer Alana Sargent.

Alana Sargent has discovered the true meaning of trust since joining Brisbane’s Expressions Dance Company three years ago. The talented dancer was already an experienced professional but the trailblazing partnering work at Expressions – which includes daring aerial throws and lifts – called for nerves of steel. “The girls in the company are fearless,” the 27-year-old says. “At first I was quite scared of throwing myself in the air and then trusting one of the boys would catch and lift me ... I’ve learnt to get over the fear and I’ve realised it’s a lot of fun. “Thankfully we have good partners and I’ve never been dropped. The level of trust creates a special connection with the other dancers.’’ Alana says the stakes have been raised even further with the company’s latest show 4Seasons, which is a co-production with Hong Kong’s City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC). “Usually there are only six of us but for this work (Expressions’ artistic director) Natalie Weir has 20 dancers to work with, which is exciting,’’ Alana says. “We are working with incredible dancers and the standard is amazing. For this work there are loads of partnering and lifting.’’ The 4Seasons is part of a five-year Chinese-Australian Dance Exchange Project involving three high-profile
Chinese dance companies. As well as a new work by Natalie, featuring music by British-based composer Max Richter inspired by Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, there will be contemporary pieces choreographed by CCDC’s Dominic Wong and Australian Kristina Chan. The triple bill will play at QPAC’s Playhouse Theatre and is touring to Hong Kong, Beijing and Darwin. Alana, who will appear in a spring season duet in 4Seasons, says the collaboration has been a learning experience for her, and has inspired her to work even harder. “This collaboration is a big deal and offers an amazing opportunity of partnership and it exposes our company to international audiences,’’ she says. “It’s been awesome for us.’’ Home life for the New Zealandborn dancer is also proving a source of happiness. She and fiancee Alex, a web design manager, have just bought their first house in Arana Hills. “I’ve found love here. Alex and I met in Brisbane seven years ago before I started my job at the Sydney Dance Company,’’ says Alana, who managed the long-distance relationship until she moved north three years ago. “It was a mutual decision to settle down and start a life in Brisbane. I’m very lucky I found Alex.’’ 4SEASONS, Jun 14-22, QPAC, South Bank. qpac.com.au

Phil Brown I put in my haggis order. “We’ll go out and shoot one,” quipped the manager When it comes to food I have simple tastes. I love comfort food. No degustation menus for me, just let me get straight to the mains and order the most heartwarming and basic thing on the menu. I think all this may be genetic. My mother’s family was Scottish on all sides which left me, for example, with a taste for haggis. In Scotland late last year we stayed at Culloden House Hotel just outside Inverness (near the famous battleground) and the first thing I did was put in my haggis order for dinner. “We’ll go out and shoot one right away,” quipped the manager. My son and I tucked into this hearty Scottish fare while my wife watched on. At breakfast in Scotland I also enjoyed kippers. I love kippers. Part of me is English too. My father’s family were from south London and they were anything but upper crust. I indulged my love of comfort food recently on a trip to Wellington in
New Zealand. Strangely that city seems to be having a love affair with kedgeree: a dish consisting of cooked, flaked fish, boiled rice, parsley, hardboiled eggs, curry powder, butter or cream, and occasionally sultanas. It can be eaten hot or cold and is a product of British India, born of empire. I love it and my wife has made it for me in the past. I found it on the menu in a few places in Wellington but was assured that the best place to eat it was the Nikau Cafe at the City Gallery Wellington. I happened to be meeting someone there for lunch so I tucked in. It was delicious. Wellington is the sort of cool, windy place that encourages the eating of comfort food. I had duck for dinner two of the three nights I was there. If there is duck on a menu I will have it. In Paris last year (we went there after Scotland and England) I ate duck several times and I was delighted
to find kidneys on the menu at one restaurant so I had kidneys for lunch, served with a rich gravy. I hadn’t had kidneys for ages. I happen to love liver too and lamb’s fry was a favourite growing up. It’s not cordon bleu stuff, is it? But that's the sort of food I love. My paternal grandmother had Irish ancestry and I remember when I was a teenager she came to stay with us and cooked the most amazing Irish stew … with dumplings. Oh yeah. My late mum made a pretty good roast beef and Yorkshire pudding which I also used to love. The closest I get to Yorkshire pudding nowadays is damper, which my wife makes to have with soup occasionally. I love damper. I can just see myself sitting by a campfire eating damper and drinking billy tea, wearing one of those hats with the corks dangling from the rim. You can see me doing that too, can’t you?
Belinda Seeney Have you ever tried arguing with a machine? Venting frustration at a blinking screen, slow-loading app or stubborn switch can feel oddly satisfying but the sense of liberation is short-lived. The machine can’t answer back and while a one-sided argument seems like a win if you’re the side calling the shots, neither side can truly claim victory. If anything, you feel like a bit of dill for swearing at the monitor, slamming the oven door shut or storming away from the ATM. Machines have been around for centuries so you think we’d have learnt arguing with one is futile. But no, we’re dressing down gizmos and gadgets more than ever because the explosion in voiceactivated and speech recognition technology has given us the illusion of an intelligent sparring partner. I’m talking about Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, Samsung’s Bixby and Mazda’s Bruce. OK, I’m not 100 per cent sure the
smooth, calm tones of Mazda’s satellite navigation system has a name but given we spent several days together traversing the unfamiliar country roads of Queensland’s southern corner last week, it felt rude not to introduce ourselves. Bruce seemed as good a name as any as it was on his namesake highway we first struck up a conversation. The discourse went something like this: Me: (singing the correct lyrics tunefully to a song on the radio) Bruce: The speed limit is 80km an hour. Me: What the ffff … oreign voice is that?! (looks wildly around car as I try not to swerve off the road in fright) Bruce: The speed limit is 80km an hour. Me: (recovering as I realise the satnav is speaking to me) Actually, Bruce – may I call you Bruce? – it’s 100km/h. See the road sign back there? And another up here? 100, not 80. Bruce: (slight pause) The speed
limit is 80km an hour. Me: Mate, you’re wrong. I know what I’m doing. Now, if you don’t have anything useful to say, don’t say anything at all. Bruce: (after several seconds of silence) You have passed your exit. Recalculating route. Round one: Bruce. As technology becomes more sophisticated, our odds of trumping an inanimate object grow slimmer. Instead, we’re relegated to rousing on an entity that can’t register the reasons for our outburst, whose range of replies is limited, who hears what it wants to hear and processes our words with laughable inaccuracy and who will never initiate a conversation without an ulterior motive. But I’m ready for the challenge and have years of valuable experience that will serve me well. This new frontier seems exactly like arguing with a teenager.

Smooth operators Meet Brisbane’s A-Team of grooming – the dapper entrepreneurs ensuring our male population look sharp and feel fantastic JIMMY O’BRIEN, 35 Owner, Jimmy Rod’s Barbershop
OLD SCHOOL … Jimmy Rod's Barbershop founder Jimmy O'Brien. Picture: Mark Cranitch
Perched high on a wooden stool, his back to a well-stocked whisky bar, Jimmy O’Brien oversees an empire. He’s the driving force and name behind Jimmy Rod’s Barbershop, employing 80 barbers in 14 stores across two states. As staff and clients in his flagship CBD Shave Saloon bustle about, he reveals plans to expand overseas, open a string of instore coffee shops, form his own registered training organisation and develop hair products. “Yeah, I’ve got a bit on my plate at the moment,” Jimmy, 35, of Paddington says. It’s a wild understatement but it’s all within reach for the self-made businessman who left South Brisbane’s St Laurence’s College after Year 10 to start a barber’s apprenticeship, opening his first barber shop at 21. “I love working the floor – get me out of the office anytime. I’m an oldschool barber and I’ve been doing this for 20 years.” Jimmy has ushered in a new wave of barbers, opening the first Jimmy Rod’s at The Barracks in 2008. “There was this demographic of
guys who didn’t want to go into a hairdresser,” he says. “A barbershop is a man’s domain. Guys can come in, they don’t have to make an appointment, they can grab a beer, chill out and feel comfortable.” Two years ago, Jimmy opened his 1920s-style Shave Saloon – with a bar and kitchen. “It’s the ultimate man cave,” he says. Jimmy’s sights are now set on Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Big Apple. “I really want to open a Jimmy Rod’s in New York, that’s my dream. I’ve given myself five years,” he says. In the meantime, there’s a new cafe venture, Need Coffee Co, percolating at his Adelaide St store, in-house training at his Woolloongabba store and an idea for a stand-alone line of men’s hair products. So how does he stay on top of things? “I work 80 hours a week, I have no life and I like to have a stiff whisky once in a while. It’s actually cheaper just to own a bar than it is to go out drinking,” he jokes. “I just love a challenge. For me, it’s not about money, it’s to help build the industry of barbering.” BELINDA SEENEY CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

Anthony Savva, 40 Owner and therapist at Archon Spas Armed with a $1000 loan from his parents, a local newspaper ad and six months of on-the-job training, 19year-old Anthony Savva opened his first salon in Sydney’s bustling Darlinghurst. “I was 19, I didn’t care! I was going to have a go at everything,” he says. “It was enough money to buy a beauty bed and waxing pot, I got products on consignment. All of a sudden I had a business.” A few months later he relocated to a spare room in his Oxford St flat, started targeting a male clientele – then considered a niche market and quadrupled his business. Raised in Brisbane’s southeast suburbs, Anthony grew up the youngest of five children – “I like to call myself the light at the end of the tunnel!” – to Greek Cypriot parents. Initially pursuing a career in the airline industry, his interest in beauty piqued when he moved to Sydney after high school. “I wanted to find myself and find my own feet and I felt like I needed to leave Brisbane to do that,” he says. Two decades later, Anthony is back in his hometown with his two-yearold labradoodle, Chewie, and running Teneriffe’s up-market ARCHON Spas. “I’m very proud to say that the client base we have is 52 per cent

male and 48 per cent female,” he says of the salon named Best Male Grooming Clinic at 2017’s national My Face My Body Awards. “One of the big reasons I love the industry is the transformation I see in people. To see their confidence and the change in their personality, I feel really good about that.” Starting his career offering “basic beauty treatments”, Anthony takes an adventurous approach at ARCHON, embracing the likes of carbon laser therapy and gold leaf facials. “You can just stick to the basics and do what everybody else is doing and not go against the grain but I’m constantly looking at new technology, services and products,” he says. “I have about a 20 second on-off switch. If I see something I like and think it’s going to work, I’ll say, ‘yes, get it in, I’ll try it’.” Anthony took time off in his mid-20s to study and gain formal qualifications and concedes it was the last break he had. “I was the only student at college who owned his own clinic and had his own clients,” he laughs. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years now so I’ve gotten to the point where I’m actually due for long service leave.” He plans to approve his own leave “at some point”, eyeing off a long overseas holiday where he’s pampered for a change. In the meantime, he’s laying the groundwork for an expansion into men’s grooming salons in Brisbane and interstate as well as a muscle injury recovery centre. BELINDA SEENEY

CHRIS BARADEL, 25 Owner, skincare range Anoque There’s no doubt about it – Chris Baradel is a handsome young man. But look beyond the rippling muscles and chiselled jawline and you’ll see he also has a flawless complexion – something he prides himself on. As one of Brisbane’s most eligible bachelors, the 25-year-old has always taken a keen interest in skincare, and now that he has his own men’s brand on the market – Anoque – it’s more important to him than ever. “Being a fit, good-looking, single male, with a dapper wardrobe, I like to look after myself and follow a healthy lifestyle, and skincare goes hand-in-hand with that,” he says. “Unfortunately there is still a barrier up with getting men to take skincare seriously and that’s something I’d like to change.” Chris launched Anoque last year after struggling to find a skincare range to meet his needs. At the time he was working in the family paint business, having left school and opted against university. Now he sells his range online Australia-wide. Anoque products are all made with vegan, organic, plantbased ingredients and, as Chris says, they also “protect Hefner’s bunnies” by being 100 per cent cruelty free. “I wanted something resultsdriven, something that did what it said it was going to do, and contained simple ingredients that were ethically produced and sustainably sourced. It’s been a slow burner but it’s growing.” Chris, a former Westside Christian
College student, was lucky enough to boost his sales recently when he was in Cosmopolitan magazine’s Bachelor of the Year competition. He didn’t make the top three, but on the plus side that means he’s still on the market and on the lookout for a Brisbane lady to wine and dine. When he’s not busy with business, he enjoys an “adventurous lifestyle”, and is often seen out and about with Brisbane “boys about town” restaurateur Tim Johnson and Instagram influencer extraordinaire Shaun Birley, who are among his best customers. In the future he’s looking to expand his range and wants men to sign up to an Anoque skincare subscription as an investment for life. “The kit is simple, which I think is the key to making it appeal to men – it’s got to be easy to fit into their day. “The biggest challenge of all is educating men to understand the importance of skincare. They might
“Being a fit, goodlooking, single male ... I like to look after myself” buy something as a one-off but it’s getting them to use something regularly that’s the key. “I want to eventually have a complete men’s grooming range including everything from shower gels to deodorants.”

WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU? We have just opened our second Mama’s Home store – in Camp Hill, a mini version of our Windsor store. Living in Camp Hill myself ... when this new amazing position and opportunity came about at Camp Hill Marketplace, we jumped at the idea. My husband and I bought Mama’s Home five years ago. We are now the third owners of this wonderful store (selling children’s clothing, toys and home accessories) which has been in its Windsor location for more than 15 years. WHY GO INTO RETAIL? My background was as an educational and developmental psychologist. I needed a career change and I still wanted to work with children in some way. I had always loved Mama’s Home and the feel I got when I walked in the store. The right opportunity arrived at the right time, and we jumped at this chance. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I am a very visual person and love to see and experience things for myself, not just see an image on Instagram – mind you, I really love that too. I am particularly drawn to certain colour palettes, pinks, pastels and florals, as
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BRISBANE? Both sides of our family live in Brisbane and this is what we love the most. The family connection is so important to us. My husband and I both grew up in Brisbane and have lifelong friends who still live here as well. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by so much friendship, love and support. WHEN OR WHERE ARE YOU HAPPIEST? When I am with my two beautiful girls, husband and dog. As long as I am with them, life is great. I travel for work a little bit, and I always love coming home to them. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? We hope once all the craziness (of the new store opening) settles we can get away, even if it is ... a weekend in Noosa. At the end of last year, knowing 2018 would be a big year for us, we spent Christmas in Disneyland, travelled through LA and relaxed in Hawaii as a family. It was an amazing holiday. By the seat of their pants Geoff Shearer And your time starts … now. Comedians Colin Lane and Frank Woodley have reunited after a 12-year break and are about to hit the Powerhouse with their new show. Titled FLY, it is sort of, well, maybe not entirely, roughly, around the edges at least, kind of about those aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Brisbane News set them a task, to see how many Wright brothers puns they could sneak into this chat. “That might take off,” Colin says of the challenge, as Frank interrupts with: “Wright on!” “Don’t worry about Frank,” Colin purrs, “he’s a bit flighty, so we may have to wing it”. OMG that one was pretty awful. “Yes, bloody Orville, if you ask me,” Colin fires back, before the conversation is steered towards the new show and when the pair first realised they had a hit on their hands. The younger of the two comedians – Frank is 50, Colin is 53 – continues without skipping a beat: “The first day that we started writing the show, this was towards the end of last year – and, remember, we really hadn’t worked together for over 10 years – we spent three hours together and we were laughing all the time. So much so, I was crying. “That was a very good sign that we were going to be able to make it fun, for us, at the very least.” To their relief, three trial performances of FLY in Melbourne in early December went down extremely well. They hadn’t lost their touch, or any of the charm they built with their TV series The Adventures Of Lano & Woodley (1997-1999) and their stage shows which toured nationally, culminating in the Goodbye tour in 2006. “We’ve performed so many times together that we’re in some ways frequent fliers,” Colin says. “The show’s been going so well, we’ve been walking on air. Frank’s done so much walking on air, that Frank’s developed DVT. “You know, I thought at the beginning of this interview we were going to become quite rudderless, but we pulled through.” Lano & Woodley FLY, Brisbane Powerhouse, Jun 5-17, tickets from $49.90, brisbanepowerhouse.org

But when it comes to the human drama, Edgerton’s timing is off. As a consequence, much of the humour also falls flat. On paper, Gringo, ticks all the right boxes. It stars Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton and Edgerton’s brother, Joel. Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo, above right) is a mild mannered, mid-level executive for a pharmaceuticals company run by his former college buddy, Richard Rusk (Joel Edgerton), a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s Harold’s job to look after the day-to-day operations of the medical marijuana manufacturing operation Rusk and his hard-as-nails business partner and sometimes lover Elaine Markinson (Charlize Theron) have set up south of the border. Unknown to him, the pair has been skimming money off the top of the business by selling raw product to the local drug lord. Since they are planning a lucrative merger, Rusk and Markinson need to clean up the books, pronto. This means severing ties with the ruthless, Beatles-obsessed crime boss known as Black Panther (Carlos Corona). This makes Harold an unwitting target for the drug kingpin’s ire. Supporting players include Sharlto Copley’s (above) international mercenary-turned-foreign aid worker and Seyfried’s sweet but clueless tourist, who has unwittingly accompanied her novice drug mule boyfriend (Harry Treadaway) on his inaugural trip. But not even Gringo’s impressive ensemble cast can breathe much life into these overblown but underwritten characters. Oyelowo is easily the best thing about the film but he succeeds in making us root for his character almost despite his material. Theron delivers a one-note performance as the vampish villainess – her heartless character really has no heart. Edgerton is similarly unconvincing. Tonally, Gringo is aiming for an extreme, Tarantinoesque blend of violence and comedy, but the execution is more bog-standard mean. VICKY ROACH

A cast of shadows GALLERIES Phil Brown
which characters frolic and play and, while there is a sense of revelry, there is also a hint of menace and a reminder of one’s own mortality. Hence the little skeleton I found myself drawn to. I shuddered a moment and then moved on. The three-dimensional nature of the show and the lighting are effective and it creates shadows that are as much a part of the work as the objects. “The notion of shadows is a key feature in The Garden, with the work being articulated not by drawing but by cast light,” Judith writes in an essay published in QAGOMA’s Artlines magazine. “Roughly handcrafted wooden forms cast their silhouettes across the tall, white walls of the gallery. The
play of light animates so that they dance amid the dark pooling and sharp reliefs. “As shadows they express both presence and absence in the same moment.” There’s the duality that is inherent in the work. Judith says being a dancer has made her aware of the performative nature of art and “the capacity of the body to convey emotion”. And there’s plenty of emotion in this exhibition which is, it must be said, just a tad spooky at times. It’s like stepping into one of Salvador Dali’s dreamscapes. With a little less melting. Brisbane artist Judith Wright’s installation and exhibition, In the Garden of Good and Evil, now on at the Queensland Art Gallery, is an otherworldly experience and part of a continuum. Judith has been exploring the fragility of the human condition in her work for many years, creating installations that allow us to meditate on such matters with a sense of whimsy and, at times, a touch of melancholy. This installation is apparently the last in her series imagining the life of a lost child. Judith is a former ballet dancer whose works now perform for her as they get to the heart of the matter of being human. “We all experience loss at some point in our lives, as we do love,” she says. “This duality is expressed throughout the work.” In the gallery space at QAG the installation surrounds you as you walk into a little space in the middle of her creation. There are mannequins, angels, animals and a forest of items that form a drama. Her garden is space in

How do I check my breasts? It’s important to check your breasts regularly. Everyone is a little different and the best person to know what’s ‘normal’ for you, is you. If you’re familiar with how your breasts usually feel, you’ll notice quickly when something isn’t right.

Suspect a cracked tooth? You might need a dentist Your teeth may be strong, but they're not invincible. Teeth can crack due to trauma or being weakened by tooth decay or grinding. Even a minor crack may cause pain and sensitivity or open the tooth to infection.
1. Lie down. Right hand examines left breast. Take your left arm behind your head and roll the body slightly towards the right side to centre the nipple and evenly distribute the breast tissue. You can put a folded towel under your left shoulder for support. With all four fingers flat, gently feel around the breast, then the centre/nipple and up into the armpit. Repeat other side.
The sooner you can see a dentist after cracking your tooth, the better the chance they can save it. Depending on the severity and position of the crack, your dentist may discuss treatments such as bonding, veneers or a crown to restore your tooth to its original strength and appearance, or a root canal if the tooth is infected or badly damaged.
2. Stand facing a mirror and raise both hands above your head, then place both hands on your hips. Look for symmetry in movement and appearance. Look at both nipples and the skin.
If you have a dental emergency, contact Face Value Dental in Brisbane CBD.
Examine once a month, 5-7 days after the start of your period is best. Discuss anything unusual with your GP.

Fishing for local potential RESTAURANT Tony Harper The minute Paper Fish came on my radar I thought of two things – the rather underutilised potential for Brisbane fish and chips and the triumphant record of the Van Haandel Group. I am familiar with their work: both versions of Stokehouse (South Brisbane and Melbourne) and other restaurants in Byron Bay and Melbourne. The Van Haandel name equals “canny”. Paper Fish was launched in St Kilda two years ago, serving clever seafood out of a small kiosk on the beach; a hole in the wall of the new Stokehouse building, casual, succinct, nice. And it has spawned a sister version at Brisbane’s South Bank – not on the pretend-beach or with water views, but close enough to allow hot fish and chips with your feet dangling in the water. It’s a fast food place – order food and drinks at the counter and either take
away or take a seat at a table and wait … not too long. The Brisbane restaurant has a menu that almost mimics the Melbourne one. There’s barramundi on offer here and not there: gurnard, flathead and gummy there but not here. What confuses me is the thinking: both venues offer blue grenadier – a cold-water fish caught in Victoria but not in Queensland. And our menu doesn’t get flathead, abundant in Queensland waters. Perhaps I’m missing something. I love the menu. It shows so much more imagination than most fish and chip shops – prawn tacos ($6), fish tacos ($5.50), Japanese potato cakes ($1.75), fritto misto ($10). And even though the drinks offering is exceedingly succinct (two beers, two house wines – white and rosé, no red, granita and soft drinks), it’s arrow-sharp. In a perfect world the food would be as
flash as the menu reads but, aside from the prawn tacos, it isn’t. Even so, those tacos are worth a trip to South Bank – let down by rather ho-hum flour tortillas, but stuffed with really good crumbed, coconut prawns, coleslaw and what I reckon is chipotle aioli. The fish tacos pale slightly beside them, but still stand their ground. Japanese potato cakes promise so much, but in truth are too oily, underseasoned and merely OK. Grilled salmon ($12.50) is excellent, and the chips (crinklecut, which I love) come with a terrific seasoning, but are cooked without care. In the end it’s a very, very clever fish and chips shop that isn’t quite fulfilling its rather splendid potential. The mind behind the menu isn’t translating to the hotplate and fryer. It beats most of our fish and chipperies, but there is better to be found if you have a good look in Brisbane.

WHY QUALITY MATTERS
“Did you know that approximately 1 in 8 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime?“ “I know I need a mammogram but does it really matter where you go? I thought all mammograms are the same?” No – breast imaging is a subspecialty in radiology and some mammograms are better than others. difw has been the private breast imaging provider of choice in Brisbane since 1998, under the care of Dr Paula Sivyer, our founding radiologist. Dr Sivyer’s reputation in breast imaging is unsurpassed in Queensland and she has trained a team of dedicated imaging professionals who share her passion for providing breast imaging that is a cut above the industry standard. Our better breast imaging experience includes: • no waiting list • same day results • 3D mammography available • all referrals accepted • ave appointment time 1.5 to 2 hours (imaging only, assumes no biopsy).
We compare imaging year after year, thanks to our large digital data archive, so you know the subtlest changes in breast tissue are logged and assessed. We provide results on the day, so you don’t have to worry.

A different timbre In a most unlikely life swap, classical pianist Rachael Turner has become a girl-power builder, writes Tonya Turner When Rachael Turner finally found her calling as a builder, she wasn’t about to let the fact she’d be working in Australia’s most male dominated industry hold her back. “I absolutely love being a licensed builder and running my own business. I feel like this is what I’m born to do,” she says. As the owner of Brisbane-based design and construction business Front Porch Properties, Rachael, 34, has completed dozens of home renovations and new builds – including the Camp Hill house pictured here and overleaf – since starting her business in 2013. Before that, she ran her own music school for 10 years after studying classical piano at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. But despite dedicating so much of her life to the sweet melodies of music, it was the sound of timber being sawn, hammers banging and the drone of power tools that Rachael longed for. While the two fields might seem poles apart, Rachael found similarities on a deeper level. “In both industries I have been a business owner, so there are definitely crossover skills regarding business management. “Also for me, both music and construction are creative,” she says. “Playing piano and composing music is a creative outlet and so is building houses.” Even as a little girl, Rachael loved houses and construction and would sketch floor plans and house elevations just for fun. With Front Porch Properties, she started out buying, renovating and selling homes for profit but very quickly the phone started ringing with people wanting help renovating or building their homes. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
At that point Rachael went back to study building and construction to obtain the skills and qualifications she needed to take the business into the next phase. Rachel says she draws inspiration from Hamptons and Cape Cod houses, modern farmhouses, barn houses and cottages. As well as handling the big stuff, she loves adding the final touches, details that add storybook charm, such as a white picket fence, coloured front door or a little red flag on the letter box. “These homes are classic and timeless, and I believe they hold their value far more than the modern boxes you see around the place,” she says. Among the Front Porch projects following this theme are a modern farmhouse on the Gold Coast, a US coastal home in Camp Hill and a Hamptons cottage in Coorparoo. Their favourite property, however, has to be the Calamvale home Rachael and her husband Simon, an engineer, designed and built before she changed careers. “It’s a charcoal blue Cape Cod cottage and we still love living in it,” she says. Making the move into construction had its challenges. She says as a newbie to the industry with no contacts, she had to work hard to prove herself in a bloke-heavy industry infamous for its tough workplace culture. In Australia, just 12 per cent of the industry’s 1.1 million workers are female. “Tradies would roll their eyes at my ideas, although that still happens most days, even today,” she says. “But things are certainly easier now that I have a fair bit of momentum behind me.” Finding and choosing the people she gets to work with also helps. “I have a really great team of carpenters who I
respect and value, and I think, hope, the feeling is mutual,” she says. With a swag of awards including Construction Skills Queensland female of the year finalist, Queensland Training Awards winner and Australian Training Awards finalist, Rachael’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed. She is fully booked for the next 12 to 18 months. While she readily admits running the business is stressful, becoming a “morning person” about a year ago has made a big difference in her life. “I wake up at 5am and spend an hour-and-a-half
going through a routine consisting of goal setting, decluttering, prayer, journaling and reading … “This routine has been life-changing for me as it really helps me set my life priorities and helps me focus on things that matter rather than getting distracted by all of life’s nagging demands. “Basically, if you don’t run your day, your day will run you,” she says. Thank shallot with Alastair McLeod
I love the subtle taste and texture of poached chicken. It makes for a different relationship with the accompanying flavours. Here seaweed and ginger give the dish a delicate fragrance and the shallot oil gives length of flavour. Use the stock in a soup with leftover chicken, or toss through noodles with a dressing of lime, sugar, fish sauce, chilli and soy.
WHITE CUT CHICKEN, SEAWEED, GREEN MANGO, SHALLOT OIL INGREDIENTS 250ml Chinese rice wine 2 bunches green shallots, green ends only 3 cloves garlic, sliced 2 large knobs ginger, 1 peeled and sliced, 1 peeled and julienned 1.2kg whole chicken 1 green chilli, seeded and finely chopped 150ml vegetable oil Salt ½ bunch green shallots, pale green/ white part, finely chopped Sesame seaweed salad, available from Asian and specialist grocers Pickled green mango, to serve
27
METHOD Place rice wine, 1 bunch of shallots, garlic, sliced ginger and 3.5 litres water into a pot that will snugly fit the chicken. Bring to boil, add the chicken and return to boil, then reduce heat to a high simmer. Cover with a lid and cook for 15 mins then remove from heat and stand for 30 mins. Lift chicken from the liquid then plunge into a large bowl of iced water for 15 mins. Drain well then refrigerate for a few hours before using. To make shallot oil, combine the 2nd bunch of shallots, green chilli and vegetable oil in a small pot. Heat until just bearable then remove from heat, blitz until smooth then pass through a fine strainer. Set aside. Remove skin from chicken, remove meat from bones and shred into strips. Combine with ginger julienne, a pinch of salt, chopped shallots, shallot oil, seaweed and mango and toss well to combine. Homeowners save with energy-efficient homes HALCYON Lakeside’s eight-star energy rated homes have put the icing on the cake for retirees Dennis and Doreen Sheehan who have seen their energy bills plummet since moving in. The couple, who moved into their three-bedroom, two bathroom plus study home in Bli Bli, have seen their energy bills drop by half of the cost since making the move to the over 50s lifestyle community. Mr Sheehan said he and his wife had seen a significant reduction in their power bills compared to their last home which was similar in size. “The most expensive bill we’ve had is $79 for a three-month period, and that was over Christmas when we had our family and 10 extra people in the house,” Mr Sheehan said. “Everything about this house is designed to save us money, from the top quality insulation to the solar panels and solar hot water. “The savings allow us to enjoy the
more important things in life; we’ve taken trips to visit the family in Melbourne and we’ve even been able to go on a few cruises.” Halcyon became the first over 50s developer to receive the full six-leaf
EnviroDevelopment certification from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA). Halcyon Lakeside was awarded the accolade after adhering to a range of specifications regarding ecosystems, waste, energy, materials, water and

community. Mr Sheehan, who was a real estate agent in Melbourne before retiring, said his property knowledge coupled with extensive research made him confident Halcyon Lakeside was a perfect place for retirement. “We certainly did our research into over 50s communities and soon realised Halcyon provided the best model,” he said. “Not only do we save money on the energy front, but we don’t pay for any water usage either. There is also no stamp duty, no rates, entry or exit fees, which was all a big selling point for us. “Living here is like living in a fivestar resort, but it’s so affordable and we couldn’t think of a better place to live.” Homes at Halcyon Lakeside are priced from $569,000 and range in size from 140sq m to 298sq m. Ocean vistas This block of oceanfront land features uninterrupted views of a spectacular stretch of the Pacific Ocean. It offers a blank canvas upon which to create a dream waterfront property. Agent Daniel Kelly says this is an affordable piece of waterfront land that buyers will struggle to find any closer to the major cities. “There’s incredible potential here to create something unique for families or retirees,” Daniel says. The current owners had already been approved to build a fourbedroom house on the block before deciding to sell, with Daniel impressed by the range of design options the block affords. Yamba is a laid-back township that’s all about escaping the fast pace of the city and embracing a peaceful
coastal lifestyle. “We’ve got an interesting demographic here with a lot of older couples and some young families,” Daniel says. “Yamba also attracts a lot of visitors from north and south. It’s a well-known holiday destination famous for great fishing and surfing, including the revered Angourie Point.” The block is close to Convent Beach, which is a quiet cove.

Horoscope with Tanya Obreza SCORPIO
GEMINI
(October 24 - November 22) Best day: Tuesday 5th Get out of your rut while you can. The time’s right to reinvent or revive lost dreams. Sure, there’ll be obstacles, but nothing you can’t cope with. Push any career campaign. Likewise, money prospects should go well. And when rewards start to roll in, don’t put this down to simple luck or timing. Take some credit here.
(May 21 - June 21) Best day: Monday 4th Stop worrying about tomorrow, nothing really matters except what you do today. You’re irresistibly drawn to a fascinating newcomer and what you thought to be a casual fling could turn out to be more the “soul mate” thing. Good news, when you’re hoping to play for keeps. If already coupled, an experimental mood could be just what you need.
SAGITTARIUS
CANCER
VIRGO
(June 22 - July 22) Best day: Wednesday 30th Recent times have been dramatic — you may have felt fragmented or out of control. Sometimes, though, it takes a touch of adversity to force a reshuffle. When you refuse to instigate change, the cosmos will do it for you. Jupiter encourages entrepreneurial skills. Mars revives romance, while Venus pushes for material and financial gain.
(August 24 - September 22) Best day: Friday 1st This week work and social activities are directly linked. Looks like a huge financial leap is also on the horizon. Best investment avenues are property or industries that enable you to work from home. And don’t be surprised if friends or family take more interest in your wellbeing. Some may give you support without you even being aware of it.
LEO
LIBRA
(July 23 - August 23) Best day: Sunday 3rd Tie up loose ends and break bad habits. Changes need to be made Leo, with some situations coming to a close. But it’s not a case of being punished for past lapses of judgment. The powers-that-be don’t work that way. It’s just that for every ending, there’s usually a new beginning. And the beauty of being you is that fresh starts are usually easy.
(September 23 - October 23) Best day: Saturday 2nd Recent months have thrown you from pillar to post. Some Librans have had to bear the brunt of enforced changes. Others have witnessed intimate relationships disintegrate, or not happen at all. Perhaps you’re to blame, perhaps not. What does it matter? Leave the past where it belongs. Instead, take heart in the promise of a rising romantic forecast.
(November 23 - December 21) Best day: Friday 1st Many Sagittarians have been truly unnerved by recent troubles. You’ve struggled. Of course, you’ve grown as a person though, at the time, that may have been little consolation. This week gives you the chance to move forward. You’re motivated and headed towards success.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Best day: Thursday 31st Mars secures your financial sector this week, assuring more money. Even longshot offers hold better promise than they normally might. Singles unleash their free spirits. Any hint of monotony is overridden by a sense of adventure. Uranus offers the unusual when it comes to work. You become a quiet, but mighty, achiever.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) Best day: Saturday 2nd Supposedly, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But should your suspicions be aroused this week, few will get the benefit of the doubt. An
BRAIN FOOD WITH LARA CURION The ‘Chicken from Hell’ or egg thief lizard was a North American dinosaur that was as close as you can get to a bird, without being a bird. Weighing up to 300kg, the oviraptorosaur was distantly related to the cassowary. Our brains have two hemispheres. The left deals with logic, language, mathematics, science and reality and the right deals with imagination, creativity, big picture orientation and feelings. Right-brain dominant people tend to be left-handed.
Certain scents stimulate the ‘reward’ area of a dog’s brain and bring them joy. Five scents were tested: a familiar human, a strange human, a strange dog, a companion dog and lastly, the dog’s own scent. Their brain scans lit up when they smelt their owner’s scent, with their canine friends a distant second. In an impoverished part of Asuncion, in Paraguay, South America, workers sort through rubbish at a landfill site while their children play music on instruments
advantage of being so astute is that it’s all-but impossible to get the better of you. If necessary, release any excess tension via a healthy fitness regime. You should also treat yourself to at least one luxury.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Best day: Monday 4th The Piscean ideal is a world of equality and peace. And yet somehow even the best of us can become entangled in life’s complex web from time to time. Success is yours for the taking right now, but is it to be at another’s expense? So unlike you. Thankfully, your love life looks less complicated.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Best day: Sunday 3rd Ariens feel a strong push towards securing house and home this week, preferring a safer, more conventional stance. But this sudden call for stability may be at odds with a more restless partner or friend. Why not lighten the mood with some fun? Take a welcome break from life’s endless grind. Loved ones will thank you.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20) Best day: Friday 1st Reassess which aims are worth pursuing and which aren’t, then discard anything that’s become a source of adversity. You might like to throw ideas around with other like minds – if nothing else, the social contact will ease isolation. Indeed, the planets suggest safety in numbers – so gather together all your friends, colleagues and family, and enjoy.
ANSWERS cleverly fashioned from the refuse, such as tin cans, forks and bottle caps. The Landfill Harmonic Orchestra has inspired a Facebook page, a movie and even international tours. The dingo is thought to have been brought here by Indonesian seafarers about 5000 years ago. Dingoes don’t bark like domestic dogs, but communicate by howling, snorting and even purring. Their unique rotating wrists allow them to use their paws almost like hands.
