Just for laughs The funny mummies tearing it up on the comedy circuit
‘My style is interactive – I think of it as me at a party’ - Jenny Wynter
This week... On Mother’s Day weekend back in May a friend and I tripped along to Paddington’s Sit Down Comedy Club for the Funny Mummies Comedy Gala. The hilarious Jenny Wynter was MC, presiding over a lineup of local standups (all mums) and a sea of excited mothers (and two men who looked a bit uncomfortable) who were overjoyed at the prospect of a child-free afternoon, sav blanc on tap and some great gags drawn from life’s ups and downs. I laughed until my face hurt and I think you will understand why when you read our Cover Story (P8) on Jenny, known for her cabaret-style standup, and two other local stars – Lucy Peut and Nikki Osborne. These women know funny and if you are in need of a good laugh (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), I’d urge you to get along to one of their gigs.

Classic beauty The golden age of glamour lives on in Lindsay Ridings debut collection for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Sarah Matthews
S
he’s a lawyer who moonlights as a fashion designer but now Lindsay Ridings is getting serious about her side hustle – her debut collection will be unveiled at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane next week. “It’s sort of a cross between Palm Springs ’50s, the desert house with the ladies lounging by the pool, and the Lake Como ’50s and ’60s,” Lindsay says of her midcentury inspired collection. Initially thinking a career in fashion design was “unrealistic”, the 27-year-old became a corporate lawyer and works fulltime as a senior contract specialist at Shell. “But I have always designed. My grandma taught me to sew basic things when I used to stay over at her house. First I designed clothes on paper dolls, then I sewed clothes for my Barbies,” she says. “Then, as I got older, I started sewing clothes for myself. I was designing dresses and gowns in biology class, so that should have signalled something for me.” After high school at Clayfield College, Lindsay studied business and law at QUT, but kept a foot in the fashion world through modelling. “I started modelling at 17 or 18, and during uni I was doing flights down to Sydney and Melbourne and taking my laptop down with me to study,” she says. “Then I deferred uni and moved to New York for three months and did work for Calvin Klein and Esprit. “I’m still a model to this day and I’ve always been on the books at Vivien’s.” Years later it was Lindsay’s talent as a designer that turned heads – trackside – when her ladylike ensembles led to her
becoming something of a race day style leader. Lindsay has been travelling to racing carnivals all over the country since 2015, taking out prestigious fashions on the field prizes year after year in clothes she has designed and made herself. “Fashions on the field has given my work a platform to be seen,” says Lindsay, who lives at Ashgrove with partner Glenn, a military major. “There’s been a lot of support, and a lot of people coming out of the woodwork and asking if they can buy my dresses or if I can make them something.” The interest prompted her to “give it a go” at MBFF Brisbane, an annual showcase of local and national design talent. “I just threw my hat in the ring,” she says. Meeting the MBFF deadline has been a challenge, with Lindsay having only a few months to complete her collection for the Group 1 Show on Aug 27. “I have to really compartmentalise. So, when I’m at work during the day I have to be fully there and focused, and then when I get home I have to section out hours to work on my collection,” she says. “It’s the shift in brains – like right to left brain. It’s quite exhausting; I didn’t realise just how much it would take out of me.” Her debut Spring/Summer collection, constructed with the help of a local dressmaker, features classic silhouettes. “The collection is really an extension of what I wear every day, but much higher glam,” Lindsay says. COVER STORY
Funny business After dipping their toes in the local stand-up comedy scene, these three witty women have found unexpected success by making motherhood a laughing matter Nikki Osborne “She puts on a really sparkly dress, lots of makeup and goes out at night.” This is the job description Nikki Osborne’s kids, Will, 11 and Teddy, 7, like to give people when they’re asked what their mum does for a living. “It doesn’t sound good does it?” laughs Nikki, 38, a Queensland-born comedian, who performs her latest stand-up show, Bad Barbie, in a pink, sequined mini-dress. The hilarious mum, who studied acting at QUT, made a name for herself in 2006 as the host of Nine’s now-defunct phonein quiz show, Quizmania. The phones once famously went down for two hours leaving Nikki to fill the silence with her wit and comedic improv and people noticed. However just as her career was taking off, life had other plans. When Teddy was diagnosed with autism, Nikki took a break to look after him. It was only when the kids started school that she found time for comedy. “There’s no way I could have written a stand-up show, a good one anyway, at home when the kids are interrupting you to show you a bug they found,” says the former Grace Lutheran College student. When she did eventually make her stand-up debut last year with her show, On the Spectrum, Nikki was not prepared for the backlash. It was a routine intended to make light – not fun – of how parents handle their child’s challenges and brilliance but the public saw otherwise. “I hadn’t even done the show yet and I was being told what a horrendous mother

I am and that I don’t deserve my son.” The comedian says after years of trying to prove herself, finally, things are starting to happen. This year, she’s toured with her latest show, Bad Barbie, appeared on Hughesy We Have a Problem, Rove’s Show Me the Movie and Celebrity Name Game. And she hints we “will be seeing a lot more of (her) on the screen soon”. “It’s about bloody time,” she jokes. “You know when you bang on that door for years and years and finally someone opens it and when they do, they say ‘where the hell have you been all this time?’ “Ah, I’ve just been over here banging on the door ... recognition is the most wonderful thing ever.” JANE ARMITSTEAD facebook.com/nikkiosborneofficial

Jenny Wynter As a mother-of-three and stepmother-ofthree, Jenny Wynter finds she has no end of parenting-related material for her comedy. In fact, her kids sometimes get in on the act. “My daughter Ella has actually come on stage with me and performed improv and she’s so good at it, she’s amazing. My son is also really funny and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t become a comedian,” Jenny says. But her biggest supporter is husband Jon Wilson, “the funniest person who doesn’t work in comedy”, who works in IT but manages to find time to make his wife’s sets and costumes. A regular at Paddington’s Sit Down Comedy Club and the Woodford Folk Festival, Jenny is known for her improvised cabaret-style comedy in which she makes up songs on the spot – inspired by audience members. “A lady once shared about a bad breakup with an ex who happened to be a butcher. What followed was a bluesy ballad with stuff like ‘you sliced up my soul, you carved up my heart; like the legs of a chicken, you tore us apart’. “It’s the best feeling. You’re creating a magical moment with the audience that will never be repeated. “The musical aspect of my shows is my favourite part. My style is interactive – I think of it as me at a party. I love treating the audience like we’re all friends.” In between shows Jenny, who lives at Ferny Hills, writes new material, has just finished her memoir, Funny Mummy, and is also working on a sitcom based on blended families, which she says is a “real and raw” version of The Brady Bunch. But it was a dream of acting that drew the 40-year-old to the stage. She grew up in Toowoomba and moved to Sydney in 2002 to pursue acting after studying business communications at Bond University. Shortly after making the move, at age 23, she found out she was pregnant and returned to Brisbane. “I had never

planned to become a mother that young but it’s just kind of how it panned out, and I found myself slowly losing my mind from the stress of it all,” she says. “Totally serendipitously I found out about an improv comedy night that was looking for performers, and I just thought, oh my gosh that sounds so much fun, and I thought improv – that’s perfect, I don’t have to rehearse – I’ll just be rocking up and doing the show. “So I auditioned and luckily got in. It wasn’t great stuff that we were doing but it gave me confidence because people found me funny. It made me think I could be funny in front of a crowd.” A year after performing at various openmic nights, Jenny began to get paid for her shows, cementing her future in comedy. But even before then, there were signs.
Despite wanting to be a serious actor, like Cate Blanchett, Jenny was continuously – and frustratingly – cast in funny roles. “I look back now and think, of course, that was always there, and I should’ve paid more attention to it,” she says. “My grandmother raised me and she always told me I was such a comedian, she would say I could make her laugh just with my face, so obviously the roots were there.” After losing her mum at a young age, it was Jenny’s grandmother, who passed away four years ago, who took care of her. Jenny says she was like “Mowgli in Jungle Book who was raised by wolves”, only she was raised by geriatrics. “It absolutely affected me. I’ve got a book sketched out about it called It Takes a Retirement Village. I think though that being raised in a grieving household
introduced me to the concept of using humour as a pain reliever,” she says. “Being able to laugh through such an awful time is what got us all through.” Jenny says being funny runs in the family with her kids Ella, 17, Caleb, 15, Cassidy, 10, all natural performers. “My three are so extroverted and loud and Jon’s kids, Aiden, 15, Sarah, 13, and Lucas, 10, are quite quiet. They’re like chalk and cheese and I think that’s why they get on so well,” she says. ELYSE HEYN See Jenny Wynter at Women in Voice 2019, Oct 18-20, Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm, brisbanepowerhouse.org; and at the Funny Mummies Comedy Gala, Nov 30, Sit Down Comedy Club, Paddington, funnymummies.com

I actually wanted to be a Doctor Without Borders and guess what stopped me … borders
Lucy Peut Barely a minute into a conversation with Lucy Peut and you know you are in for a treat. The hilarious mother-of-three has the gift of the gab so it comes as a surprise to learn she was once a shrinking violet who tried comedy as a way to combat shyness. “I was looking for something to boost my confidence. I looked around for public speaking but the option was Toastmasters and that’s just quite dull,” Lucy says. “I was a stay-at-home mum and when I got into comedy I was able to sort of highfive my husband and go out to a gig at night, and suddenly I had a life outside of the home. It’s interesting when you face that first initial fear. Now I’m not shy.” Lucy, 38, entered the comedy world about five years ago with a gig at Paddington’s Sit Down Comedy Club and the positive reception gave her the boost to continue. She describes her comedy as “carefully worded nonsense” and is developing a character, Lady Lulu, who delivers a hilarious deadpan delivery about her “exhausting” life. “I’m a latecomer to comedy,” she says. “My eldest was 15 and I didn’t think of it as a career when I started but then it just started to pay me.” In between gigs at comedy galas, “dull but essential” corporate luncheons, and parenting duties, Lucy studies law parttime at QUT. Ever the joker, she says she embarked on the degree three years ago so
she could drink bottles of wine and draft her own divorces – and so people didn’t think she was dumb. “I realised that if I wanted to do more meaningful work, I needed to be more, and further education was the next right step for me,” she says. “I actually wanted to be a Doctor Without Borders and guess what stopped me … borders. Unlike medicine, law can be studied part-time. “I really like the way it’s trained me to think differently about life situations and it matches comedy well for that reason. It’s a very expensive hobby though.” Lucy has 20-year-old Hannah, stepdaughter Ruby, 17, and six-year-old son Henry with her husband Brendan – all of whom provide inspiration for her gags. “My son says, as I leave for gigs, ‘break your leg mum!’, but he also says ‘bless you’ when someone coughs,” she says. “The girls have seen shows and snippets, we get to laugh a lot more together. In the early days I would run bits by them, now I don’t do that so much. I was looking for whether things were funny or not because they needed to transcend age groups. Now I’m much more selfassured and confident.” Having grown up near Tabulam in north-eastern NSW and lived in the country for most of her life, Lucy now enjoys life in a city highrise and coffees at The Westin on Mary St. “My holy grail was to move to Brisbane, and I got here, fell in love and my husband lived at Marburg – the middle of nowhere – so back to the country I went,” she says. “Last year we moved into Brisbane so we went from acres to an apartment. Now I’m stretching out on grass someone else mowed, I love living in the CBD.” The glamorous mum says she’s now all about the fun and says entertaining other mothers “who are just grateful to be out” is the icing on the cake. “My whole life is a series of happy accidents,” she says. “I would never have planned any of it.” ELYSE HEYN See Lucy at Livewired Comedy, Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm, Aug 25, free. brisbanepowerhouse.org

LIFE
Brooke Falvey The good news is I’m somewhat of an expert at navigating the emotional minefield that comes after a breakup, so here’s my advice for Liam ... the similarity ends, because none of Sparks’ stories finish with the girl going on an Italian vacation, throwing on some skimpy bikinis and very publicly kissing someone else’s wife. The good news is I’m somewhat of an expert at navigating the emotional minefield that comes after a breakup, so here’s my advice for Liam ... Breakups suck. They’re worse than the M1 on a Friday afternoon; building Ikea furniture and waiting in line for an acai bowl in Byron Bay on a Saturday morning. And that’s without adding global fame, a snap-happy ex and a posse of paparazzi armed with telescopic lenses to the mix. You probably can’t even mope around Wategos in your oldest tracksuit pants and
T-shirt, or do a quick stalk of her Instagram stories while waiting to pay for your vegan ice cream because you’re going to end up on the cover of People magazine under the headline “Achy breaky heart”. Twelve months ago I was where you are and I can tell you that no matter what the headlines say, you’ll be OK. My mum told me that after my split and now I’m passing it on to you. And I know it’s true because this time last year, I was elbow deep in a tub of ice cream while singing Whitesnake’s Here I Go Again and now I’m doling out relationship advice to you, the World’s Sexiest Vegan. Once the shock wore off and my lactose intolerance made it impossible to eat any more ice cream, I set about ridding myself
of any feelings I had for my ex through song. That’s right, you need to sing it out. Loud and proud. You can even do it out in the ocean, with only the whales and your brother to pass judgment (plus you can pass off any tears off as seawater). Now, there are hundreds of songs to choose from if you want to wallow, but they are not the ones I’m talking about (as much as I not-so-secretly love Rick Astley, Foreigner, Air Supply and Adele). But I suggest you focus on the “asskicking, bass-thumping, crank up the volume, I’m better without you because you didn’t believe in traditional marriage and you’ve now ruined Lake Como for me” kind of songs. Although perhaps you should give Wrecking Ball a miss.

Joan Crawford famously said, “Love is a fire. But whether it is going to warm your hearth or burn down your house, you can never tell.” Nine months ago Liam Hemsworth shared a photo of scorched letters spelling “LOVE” that once decorated the porch of the Malibu home he shared with then-fiancee Miley Cyrus. I’m not going to say the writing was on the wall, but from the get-go theirs was a love story that seemed almost too good to be true. Boy meets girl on the set of a Nicholas Sparks movie. Boy and girl date, break up, make up, break up, get engaged, break up, make up and then surprise everyone by getting married. The novelist couldn’t have written it better himself. But that’s where

If looks could thrill A Toowong favourite with a consummate chef just needs a 21st century spruce-up RESTAURANT Tony Harper It was a while ago now, but I celebrated my 30th birthday at 85 Miskin St, back when Russell Armstrong owned the place, and it was called Tables of Toowong. In terms of looks, not much has changed, except that now it carries the patina of decades and the general air of something in decline. Much like myself. Some of the formal touches have been pared back, making things a little more relaxed, but the building could do with a lick of paint and a few fresh touches to bring it into the current century. It’s now called 85 Miskin St after a name change from Brent’s – The Dining Experience. I think I prefer the simplicity of the new moniker and the equally simplified offering that comes with it. But names aside, it belongs – as it has done ever since Bruno Loubet left the space – to Brent Farrell. He’s a talented chef and a man with plenty of fans. Part of the allure is the fact that 85 Miskin St is one of the very few surviving restaurants that accepts BYO and can match decent wines with equally decent food (depending, I guess, on the wines in question). It offers a la carte, a five-course lunch tasting menu and an eight-course degustation, all with the option of of wine
STUNNING VIEWS WITH EVERY BITE
TALENT TIME ... The time-honoured interior of 85 Miskin St; glazed beef cheek (inset). matches from the long, quirky (odd perhaps) wine list – not the best glass selection (heavy with sweet and fortified) and an occasionally eye-opening but long and rambling bottle list. We opt for the full shebang: eight courses with our own wines. Some of the dishes feel dated – not badly so, just not completely contemporary, while others are so unique and refreshing that they counterbalance. For example, there’s a plate of glazed beef cheek with a large quenelle of mashed potato, then mushroom ragu and a sticky, sweet jus. Delicious, but kind of 1998. Two plates before is this dish of panzanella (but made with watermelon rather than tomatoes), fried haloumi, sumac and dehydrated olive. It looks really special, and while the beef cheeks taste more satisfying, the quirk and prettiness of the watermelon thing make it stand out.

There’s a dip into Asia with wagyu-beef wontons paired with dashi broth. The wontons are small, crunchy and suitably rich in the middle – east meets west. And the broth is served in what I can best describe as miniature steins – tiny beer glasses with handles. And here’s the thing ... how much better would the dish be if the dashi broth came in wee saké cups or mini Japanese teacups? Just a thought. But there is no faulting the cooking. There’s a leaning toward sweetness in some dishes (like duck liver paté with fig glaze) and it’s great. And all but the sorbet and the watermelon dish are kind of rich, and in the middle of winter I reckon that’s a good thing. Brent Farrell can cook. Our eight courses (plus cleanser) lands for $99. Not bad at all.

RECIPE
In the spirit Take your cue from cocktails to tart up a dessert classic, says Alastair McLeod The Gimlet, Negroni and the iconic Vesper Martini have assured gin of its mythical status. Lately, a whole new audience is enjoying this aromatic spirit in more adventurous pours. Distillers are perfuming gin with a diverse range of botanicals and ageing it in wine barrels. It’s a logical leap to employ gin to fortify your cooking. Use it in curing fish, and add gin to pasta, slow-cooked meat dishes, marmalades and a dazzling array of desserts – ice cream, parfait, mousse and tarts. That’s the spirit.
GIN + TONIC TART WITH CANDIED LEMON Ingredients 150g caster sugar 4 eggs + 2 egg yolks 125g unsalted butter, chopped 1 lemon + 1 lime, zested and juiced 1½tsp juniper berries 1 gelatine leaf, soaked in cold water 4 x 8cm sweet pastry tart shells Creme fraiche to serve, optional Lemon balm, to garnish
Method Combine sugar, eggs and egg yolks, butter, zest, juice, and juniper in a large stainless steel bowl set over a pot of gently simmering water. Whisk constantly and cook for 6-8 mins to a thickened curd. Remove from heat, squeeze excess water from the gelatine and add gelatine to curd, whisking to combine. Pass mixture through a sieve, cover and chill for 2 hours. Spread mixture into tart cases and chill for a further 2 hours. Arrange candied lemon slices on tarts, drizzle with syrup and accompany with creme fraiche and lemon balm, if using. Serves 4

wooning is par for the course when Luke Kennedy takes the stage, so when Swing on This schmoozes into the Spiegeltent at Brisbane Festival, audiences will really be in for a treat. Not one, but four leading stage and screen stars will unite in true Rat Pack style for this intimate show that captures the glamour of a bygone era. With a live band and songs from the likes of Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra to John Farnham, INXS and The Proclaimers, the quartet plan on delivering swing with a twist and oodles of charm. Luke, who will be joined by Michael Falzon (We Will Rock You, Evita), Matt Lee (So You Think You Can Dance, Mary Poppins), Ben Mingay (Wonderland, Hacksaw Ridge), says the show is one of his favourites. “We’ve been doing this show for five years now, but every time we do it we make changes to keep it current,” he says. “Being in the Spiegeltent is great because it will be a more intimate variation given we are much closer to the audience. “It means we can’t get away with mistakes as easily, but we do have more opportunity to play with the audience.” Luke, who lives in Brisbane with partner and fellow performer Naomi Price, shot to fame when he was runner-up in the 2013 series of TV talent show The Voice Australia, and went on to tour internationally with The Ten Tenors. Recently back from starring in an arena spectacular performance of Jesus Christ Superstar in Townsville, Luke reveals he would one day “like a crack” at playing Jean Valjean in the long-running musical, Les

Her right to choose An exhibition by photographer Grace Smith displays the passion and pain that accompanies reproductive rights Emma Schafer When abortion was criminalised in Alabama in the US earlier this year, the decision sent shockwaves that reached all the way to the Brisbane home of Grace Smith. The 25-year-old (inset), who is a professional photographer and a passionate advocate for women’s rights, channelled her disappointment, anger and frustration for the women affected into a passion project she called She Chose. Grace’s exhibition, which opens at Newstead Studios later this month, features 25 portraits displayed alongside the emotional, personal stories of eight women and one man. Each shared with Grace their experiences with abortion, emergency contraceptives and reproductive rights before being photographed for the series. Grace says she hopes the honesty of the works will help start a dialogue “about a topic women feel shame in talking about”. “My hope is that by reading these raw, brave and personal stories … we can all be open minded as a community and be reminded that every individual woman’s journey is rightly her own,” says Grace, who lives at Hendra. When the idea came to her, she put the call out for women’s personal stories on her Grace Elizabeth Images Instagram account, and was blown away by the candour of the responses. “These brave women had to make choices at some point in their life. These choices have come from a place that only a woman can know. “They have made decisions that by no means have been easy, but have given them autonomy over their own bodies, a freedom and a path to live their life. These are reproductive rights.” She Chose, Aug 31- Sep 20, weekdays, 7am-2pm, Newstead Studios, Newstead. graceelizabethimages.com

THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM (MA15+) hhhhj Director Daniel Gordon Starring Adam Goodes, Stan Grant, Nova Peris This plain-spoken documentary about AFL legend Adam Goodes packs a hefty emotional wallop. The conventional, talking head interview format might be a little clunky at times, but by giving screen time to a diverse range of perspectives – from indigenous greats Nicky Winmar and Gilbert McAdam to right-wing commentator Andrew Bolt and foot-inthe-mouth sports identity Eddie McGuire – the filmmakers prepare the ground for a gut-wrenching final act. Lending a voice of authority to the project is writer/narrator Stan Grant. The Australian Dream is really an extension of the journalist’s hugely influential 2015 Ethics Centre speech, in which he called out his fellow country men and women for their casual and not-socasual racism. Grant felt compelled to speak after witnessing AFL fans’ treatment of Goodes on the sporting field – the two-time Brownlow Medal winner was subjected to a sustained and co-ordinated attack after demanding a teenage girl be evicted from the football ground after calling him an ape. “I can’t speak for what lay in the hearts of the people who booed Adam Goodes. But I can tell you what we heard when we heard those boos. We heard a sound that was very familiar to us,” said Grant. “We heard a howl. We heard a howl of humiliation that echoes across two centuries of dispossession, injustice, suffering and survival. “We heard the howl of the Australian dream, and it said to us again, you’re not welcome.” Segments of Grant’s powerful and persuasive speech are interwoven with archival footage of the football star in action, as well as fresh interviews with him
TOGETHER WE STAND ... Former Sydney Swans team mates Michael O’Loughlin (left) and Adam Goodes in The Australian Dream. and his family. Particularly moving is the testimony of Goodes’ mother, Lisa Sansbury, who only revealed to her son that she had been taken from her parents as a five-year-old while filming an episode of Who Do You Think You Are in 2014. Winmar and McAdam, who still bear the scars of the racist abuse they endured on and off the field, provide historical context. Former coach Paul Roos and Collingwood great Nathan Buckley offer a contemporary perspective.
Sam Newman stirs the pot with racist invective and a severely miscalculated appearance in “blackface”. McGuire compounds the damage with his King Kong “joke”. Quietly spoken and not entirely comfortable with the limelight, Goodes isn’t your typical activist. But while Grant provides the eloquent rhetoric, it’s the athlete who makes this story personal. The Australian Dream charts his slow and at times painful politicisation. The
A DOG’S JOURNEY (PG) hhkjj Director Gail Mancuso Starring Dennis Quaid, Kathryn Prescott, Josh Gad, Henry Lau The tricks are familiar, and the anthropomorphic dialogue is pretty ruff, but once you agree to roll over, this shaggy dog sequel scratches all the designated spots. The story takes up pretty much where Lasse Hallstrom’s 2017 crowdpleaser, A Dog’s Purpose, left off. Ethan Montgomery (Quaid, right) and his beloved St Bernard-Australian shepherd cross, Bailey (Gad) have settled into an easy, amicable routine on the farm Ethan inherited from his grandparents. They share the wicker chairs on the porch of their white weatherboard house with Ethan’s childhood sweetheart, Hannah (Marg Helgenberger, who replaces Peggy Lipton in the sequel), her widowed daughter-in-law Gloria (Betty Gilpin), and their cute-as-a-button granddaughter CJ 16 BRISBANE NEWS August 21-27, 2019
(Emma Volk). But when the dog-phobic Gloria has a run-in with her in-laws, she piles a distraught CJ into the back seat of her car and drives off, severing all ties. Not long afterwards, Bailey comes to the
end of another life (he’s pretty accustomed to the process by now, having been reincarnated many times). And at this point, Ethan gives him a new “purpose” – protecting CJ. Living alone with her
documentary ends with a small ray of hope in the form of the “I stand with Adam Goodes” and “Racism: It Stops With Me” campaigns. But as the broken footballer walks on the beach with his pregnant wife, it’s clear that nobody can repair the damage that’s already been done. A thoughtful, layered companion piece to The Final Quarter, which was watched by almost half a million Australians when it screened on Channel 10 last month. neglectful, alcoholic mother, the poor kid is going to need all the help she can get. This time, Bailey comes back as a female beagle, Molly, who gets CJ through a difficult childhood, but even she can’t stop the nowheadstrong high school senior (Prescott) from hooking up with the wrong guy. That mistake eventually leads to a car accident in which the loyal beagle loses another life. There’s a fleeting encounter between CJ and the English mastiff Bailey returns as, but it doesn’t amount to much. But when he comes back again – as a tiny Biewer terrier named Max – Bailey fits right into the struggling singer-songwriter’s Manhattan lifestyle, helping CJ sort out her problems. A Dog’s Journey is surprisingly eventful but no matter how bumpy the road gets, there is never any doubt that it will lead back to the farm house with its dappled streams and fields of golden wheat. Viewed from a dog’s perspective, life is pretty simple – and unapologetically romantic. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

Driving ambition After years waiting in the wings, Brisbane-bred actor Sam Cotton takes the lead in a new ABC comedy Hannah Davies He’s done everything from cleaning toilets to making coffee, but now Brisbane actor Sam Cotton believes he may be on the brink of his big break. The 32-year-old stars in new ABC comedy-drama series Diary of an Uber Driver, based on the popular blog and bestselling e-book by Uber driver Ben Phillips. The six-part series follows Uber driver Ben, played by Sam, as he tries to figure out what he should be doing with his life while “people watching” his passengers. Although Sam has been a professional actor for 10 years, appearing as Bruce in the ABC’s Rosehaven, and Wayne in SBS’s The Family Law, this is his first lead role. He landed the part after submitting an audition tape he made in his bedroom, followed by a call back audition in Sydney. “I sat by the phone for two weeks after that, waiting to hear if I’d got in,” he tells Brisbane News. “I’m naturally pessimistic
so I didn’t expect to get lucky at all and I’m still coming to terms with it to be honest.” Sam, who grew up in Ascot but moved to Sydney in February to capitalise on his acting success, says there was extra pressure on set because “real Uber driver Ben” was watching closely. “Fortunately he’s a lovely guy,” he adds. “He’s really warm and it’s not hard to see why people open up to him and tell him their life stories. He’s also quite similar to me so there was no crazy method acting needed for the role.” Sam set his sights on acting when he was 16 and entered a competition entitled Search for a Movie Star at Movie World on the Gold Coast. He did a Chopper Read monologue and was declared the winner. He then started acting classes with casting director Tom McSweeney. On reflection he thinks he was a bit naive and “put all his eggs in one basket”. “In reality I’ve done a lot of other jobs including cleaning toilets at Friday’s and
working at Starbucks ... Uber driving is also a good plan B for an actor,” he says. While Sam has written, directed and produced several short films, his dream is to create an adult animated series about an alien encounter in rural Queensland, and he has begun pitching to producers.
“Australia is missing a series like The Simpsons or South Park that is specific to us. I think an aliens-versus-bogans scenario would make for a funny show.” Diary of an Uber Driver, Wednesdays, 9.30pm, ABC TV and iview

aving lived on the southern slope of Taylor Range, on Brisbane’s Western edge for 30 years, Russ and Viv had come to know their bushland site very well. So when their three daughters flew the coop, the couple decided that rather than move, they would carve off a section to build a new place a little further up the hill. One of their daughters now lives in the original house. “We decided to cut 510sq m off the original 1850sq m block and build a smaller place just for us,” Viv says. “The site still feels like acreage because we’re surrounded by gums.” It is an unusual pocket of suburbia, given its elevation and thick gumtree forest surrounds. Among its favourable qualities are long vistas over The Gap and views of Mt Coot-tha. Sunsets here are particularly impressive. Brisbane architect Matthew Kennedy designed the new house to take advantage of this outlook, the bushy slope and microclimate. The primary living floor is elevated and stretched along the southern boundary, where large windows frame those big views. The floor plan is deliberately narrow, only one room wide, and bent in an L-shape to semi-enclose a north-facing terrace. “The design evolved to provide a specific climatic response by harnessing local breeze patterns and orientating towards a northern aspect up the hill to catch the winter sun,” Matthew says. “The L-shaped plan addresses the desirable north-eastern aspect and shelters a courtyard that enjoys breezes and views through the house.” Kitchen, dining and living rooms are combined into one elegantly proportioned room. “We didn’t want it to be too big,” Viv says. “The space is only 4m to 4.5m wide but it feels very spacious because the highest point of the ceiling is 4.5m.” The adjacent corridor spills on to the terrace via sliding glass doors that stack away. Raked ceilings bring spatial drama, paired with a neat window box that invites guests to sit on the edge of the living room. The long, narrow floor plan appears simple but is carefully tuned to capture light, breezes and views. “The roof pitch parallels the fall of the land, opening up to the higher northern elevation where high louvres ventilate rising hot air,” Matthew says. “A generous 2m eave overhang brings subtle winter sun and shields intense summer heat. Says Viv: “The breezes are what this house is all about. As soon as I open the louvres they flow through.” The breezes are apparent the moment

you step inside. The open corridor, flanked by terrace and living room, continues to the end of the house where a dog-legged staircase descends to the hobby room and garage. Bedrooms are clustered along the western wing on the primary floor, with the master bedroom given precedence and the best view south-west over bushland. High-level louvres flood both bedroom and ensuite with sunlight and breeze. Most impressive are the large sliding windows designed to stack into concealed wall pockets. Sliding screens are included to stop fire embers from entering in the
unfortunate event of bushfire. Earthy tones and materials embed the building in the landscape. At the entrance, tan bricks transition the ground plane, bridging the pathway to a timber entry staircase. A curved wall in the same brick anchors the building and shelters the terrace, providing privacy. “The earthy tones of the brickwork were chosen to reflect the colours of the land,” Matthew says. “The coved bricks create visual interest and invite touch.” Inside, blackbutt timbers were chosen for their sustainable properties and natural
finish. Plywood ceilings visually soften rooms, tempering glare and adding a sense of warmth. Inside and out, the colour scheme echoes the natural patina found in the eucalyptus forest. “There is a beautiful quality of light that permeates the home,” Matthew says. “The ambiguous distinction between interior and exterior spaces results in a calmness in the architecture.” Architect: Matthew Kennedy, arcke.com.au Builder: Bluebird, bluebirddc.com.au Photography: Scott Burrows

Getting a crown fitted used to involve several appointments with your dentist. Thanks to CEREC technology, our dentists can now repair or restore teeth in a single appointment.” Dr Malcolm Duff BDS (Dund) MGDS RCPS (Glas)
Restoring your smile in a single visit Is CEREC right for you? Ask your dentist about CEREC same-day crowns* hat is CEREC? Dental technology is evolving all the time. CEREC combines 3D imaging, computeraided design and modelling (CAD/CAM) and a milling machine to design and create custom restorations right in your dentist’s clinic. These allceramic restorations are designed to look, feel and function just like your natural teeth. “Before CEREC, your dentist would assess your medical history in a comprehensive examination, take impressions of your teeth and explain all available options to you. Impressions would then be sent to an off-site laboratory where your restoration would be made. In the meantime, you’d be
fitted with a temporary crown. With CEREC, the whole process from start to finish in a single visit!” Who can benefit? You may be suitable for CEREC same-day crowns if: • you have a chipped or cracked tooth • you have a large cavity • your teeth are stained or discoloured • your teeth are slightly crooked • your teeth have minor gaps. Your dentist will take a digital 3D impression of your mouth and use CEREC software to design your custom restoration. This design will then be sent to an on-site milling machine, which will precisely cut your crown from a ceramic block.
Am I suitable for CEREC? If you’ve been told you’re not eligible for a crown because your teeth are too small or lack structural integrity, you could still be a candidate for CEREC restorations. CEREC’s advanced bonding technique means less of the healthy tooth structure has to be removed. When you make an appointment with our dentists, we’ll discuss your eligibility for CEREC treatment and other restoration options. We’ll also make sure you understand any risks and side- effects that may be involved so you can make an informed decision.
PRINCIPAL DENTIST: Dr Malcolm Duff, Face Value Dental
Why choose CEREC? As well as saving time compared to traditional methods, CEREC is also less invasive, as less tooth preparation is needed. Your same-day crowns are designed to be strong and durable and blend in naturally with your teeth. Face Value Dental was among the first clinics to offer CEREC in Australia. From our on-site dental laboratory, we can design, manufacture and bond ceramic crowns, usually in a single appointment. If you want to know more about CEREC, contact our team at Face Value Dental. We’re open most week nights until 8pm and offer emergency appointments if you need to see a dentist urgently.

here’s something truly wonderful about getting away from our usual weekend lives and stepping into the beauty of the unknown. Well, not quite the unknown, but to an exquisite mountain escape that does, quite literally, leave you refreshed, relaxed and treated so beautifully. All of the above happened when a girlfriend and I spent a weekend at Bowen Mountain, the mountain that cocoons Spicers Sangoma Retreat. In two nights we managed to completely abandon the stresses of everyday work and city life, and find serenity – and so much more. Sangoma, which by the way means 24 BRISBANE NEWS August 21-27, 2019
healer in Zulu, is serious bush luxury. The eco-certified retreat has everything you desire and is in the foothills of the Blue Mountains National Park west of Sydney. It took us just over an hour to drive from the city’s CBD, and mere minutes to collapse into the relaxed luxury that Sangoma offers. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by the divine general manager and told about our luxury “bush” suite. But before discovering it, we had a little stopover in the cosy lounge, complete with fireplace, a glass of chilled champagne, and a picture-perfect view of the multicoloured cascading Blue Mountains. Breathe deeply. Relax. I was already in
the zone. On a clear day you can see a fine outline of Sydney way, way, in the distance, but not close enough to think, “Aah, I’m in the city”. It was liberating. What I loved about Sangoma was the relaxed sanctuary. Every designer detail suits the setting, from the soft, cosy leather lounges that swallow you up; the artwork; the wood detailing; to the colour palette; and the books. So, so many books that you will never run out of choices. The design emphasis is definitely on combining nature and harmony, with each of the suites having a distinct personality and all opening on to mountain bushland. One of the suites – the Tent Suite –
is a huge but perfectly proportioned one (like all of them) that even features an internal tent, so you can make like you are seriously glamping ... but with the benefits of a five-star retreat. Sangoma’s attentive staff take care of everything. All meals are served in the most divine dining area and as there are only eight suites, it is never overcrowded. What was served up to us was sensational – organic, fresh and different four-set-course meals each night. The meal plan also changes every day. Everything is included in the price – unless you choose premium wines – so there is no hassling over what to order. You can have an aperitif under the stars V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

If you want, you can also just simply laze in your room, listen to the birds, smell the real scent of nature and eat the meals in the privacy of your suite. Your wish is Sangoma’s command. Not long after we arrived, we were taken on a tour, complete with a cane picnic basket of cheese and champagne, to see the beautiful Avoca Vale Lookout. Anise came a-calling, and both my girlfriend and I indulged in a seriously soothing massage. It was hard enough, soft enough and just perfect. It was as if the therapist understood my body. We both came out of our treatment blissfully serene. In fact while massages can often make you want to go straight to bed, this one reinvigorated us and we were ready to take on even more extraordinary food that night at dinner. Whether fish, pork, sirloin, whatever, every dish was a pleasure to the senses. I found Sangoma can be a number of things to anyone: a romantic retreat; a great weekend away with a girlfriend; or
just a brilliant way to breathe in some fresh air and take some time just to “be”. The service, food and suites are absolutely beautiful, beyond comfortable, and when you do leave, you have that aching feeling that you really don’t want to. I’m sure I arrived home with my jeans just a little tighter, but hey, who cares when you’ve been treated like a queen for 48 hours. I’d be back there in a flash! But Featherbank is not the idyll Tom Kennedy imagined; 15 years ago five boys were abducted and murdered by a killer dubbed the Whisper Man. Four were eventually found but the whereabouts of the fifth still consumes detective Pete Willis. Now another child has vanished and Tom’s sensitive son Jake is talking about a boy in the floor, whispering at the window and bumps in the night. Britain’s Channel Islands were occupied by German forces for five years during World War II but the repercussions have lasted a lifetime for some of its victims in this heartbreaking fictionalised account. Farmer Geoffrey and former Catholic priest Joe have lived together for decades but never discussed that time. German-born Dora, a Jewish refugee, fled to London. It takes the quest of a young German woman to strip away their defences, laying bare the horrors of war. Chamberlain does a terrific job of underlining the fact that while women have a different wartime story to men, it is no less wrenching. She researched the topic in great detail and spares no one for, as a protagonist points out, war makes monsters of everyone. SHELLEY ORCHARD
MEET ME IN VENICE
NEVER HAVE I EVER
Barbara Hannay Penguin Random House, $33
Joshilyn Jackson Raven Books, $27
A marriage on the brink because the husband is obsessed with his job, an aspiring actor who has an affair with an older – and married – director; and revelations that a seemingly dedicated father has a long-lost son with his old sweetheart. This is the latest novel by former English teacher Barbara Hannay, who has perfected the art of family drama fiction – especially appealing to an older female demographic. In Meet Me in Venice the central character is newly widowed Daisy who decides the way to get over her single living doldrums is by paying for her three offspring to holiday in Venice – the home city of their dearly departed dad. Here each must confront the personal problems they have been hiding from each other. It is exactly as it suggests – an easy-to-digest story with, if not predictable, then at least a feel-good ending with few surprises. MICHELLE COLLINS
Set yourself strict time limits before you pick up Joshilyn Jackson’s first psychological thriller. She has penned this novel so that each chapter ends with a question – a deliberate ploy to keep you reading well past your bedtime. The story follows a group of women – whose regular book club meeting is run by a neighbourhood newcomer named Roux. The strongwilled Roux steamrolls the reluctant suburban book lovers into a game of “never have I ever”, a version of truth or dare. And with a few wines under their belts, the mums reveal secrets that they would rather stay hidden. Jackson’s usual stock in trade is family drama (The Almost Sisters) and it shows. There are also some hard-to-believe plot twists, as Roux’s hidden agenda becomes clearer, but then that is exactly what elevates this thriller into the “can’t put down” category. Think Desperate Housewives meets Killing Eve. MICHELLE COLLINS V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
LAST WORD
Phil Brown In recent years I have done quite a bit of public speaking for one reason or another. It’s always hard when people get up and leave I was just warming up when two women in the front row got up and walked out. The occasion was one of two events I did at the Byron Writers Festival recently to promote my book The Kowloon Kid. You’ve bought a copy, haven’t you? Anyway I was in mid-conversation when this pair upped and left. My interviewer, fellow Brisbane writer John Birmingham, raised his eyebrows. Was it something I said? Was it everything I said? Rather sympathetically a lady sitting in the third row said, quite loudly, “How rude!”. Anyway, we didn’t miss a beat and had an excellent session, which those ladies missed. I’ll never know why I didn’t measure up
but them’s the breaks when it comes to public speaking. I am now a reasonably experienced public speaker. In fact, try shutting me up. I had to give a lecture at Griffith University some years ago and I recall that the lecturer who invited me was worried about whether I could talk for 40 minutes. Once I’m on a roll though, I can talk under water. I went past the 40-minute mark on that occasion and nearly filled up the whole hour. My early training in public speaking was when my English teacher at Kowloon Junior School in Hong Kong asked me to enter a school music festival that included recitation and I did a poem by E.V. Rieu and a passage from The Wind in the

Willows. That was my first public speaking gig and I quite enjoyed it, although I didn’t win anything. Of course at school you have to give class presentations and I remember one I did in Year 10 at Miami State High School. I hadn’t prepared or even planned what I was going to talk about until I got up. I decided to talk about the history of the horse. I said that once upon a time horses were this big (I leant down to indicate a small prehistoric horse) and then over the millennia they grew to be this big – I indicated a modern horse size. That was it. It took 30 seconds. My mates were rolling around laughing as the teacher threw me out of the class. Oh well.
I attended Toastmasters International for a while in my early 20s and in recent years I have done quite a bit of public speaking for one reason or another. It’s always hard when people get up and leave or when you look out and see this sea of faces that reminds you of the audience from The Muppet Show. As a poet I have read my work in public many times, too, and that can be tough. Poetry readings are lessons in resilience ... looking out and seeing faces that remind you of Mount Rushmore. Best to fix your eyes on the back wall and just press on. As for those ladies who walked out at the Byron Writers Festival, well, maybe sit down the back next time so you can slip out unnoticed.
