LITTLE LEAGUE
Meet the stars of tomorrow
Get happy Fashion with the fun factor
This week... When she is not at daycare with other four-year-olds, little Claudia Buchanan from Brookfield can be found, brush in hand, sweeping paint across huge canvasses to create startling abstract works such as Pony (detail, right). If you look closely, you’ll find other animals – wolves, dinosaurs, tigers – lurking in the layers of vivid colour in her pieces. Claudia has a rare gift, no question, and in this week’s Feature (P8) we spotlight this budding artist, along with two other talented youngsters – junior golfer Jeju Fuentes, who looks set to follow in the footsteps of his hero Rory McIlroy, and actor Bella Rose, who just wrapped on her first feature film – a medieval adventure, no less. Little wonders all.

LIFE
Alicia Pyke I discovered the beauty of ugly shoes. While my heart prefers stilettos, the 26 tiny bones in each of my feet demand a supportive sole Knowing December is nearly here makes my head spin. As I prepare for Christmas and summer holidays, my subconscious goes into overdrive trying to make sense of the months gone by. It’s a trip: an external-internal tug of war for my attention right at the busiest time of year. Sometimes I think it’s the pressure of a fresh new year ahead. Or maybe it’s to do with looking back, feeling lucky and wanting to hold on to this year’s goodness a little longer. Either way, in an attempt to tone down my freak-out about the end of another epic
year, here are some of the things I’ve loved most in 2019: Ugly shoes. Chunky, orthopaedic sandals with velcro straps. If they’re well designed in supple leather, I own them now. 2019 is the year I discovered the beauty of ugly shoes. While my heart prefers stilettos, the 26 tiny bones in each of my feet demand a supportive sole much closer to the ground. Unfortunately the compromise between style and comfort comes at a premium. Buying four pairs of supportive shoes that I don’t actually hate has cost as much as an economy return
airfare to New York. Oh well, at least I’ll be able to walk those giant city blocks next time I do get back to Manhattan. Having family nearby. After more than a decade in Sydney, living in the same city as Guy’s parents and one of my sisters is awesome. Even when weeks go by without seeing each other, knowing they’re (almost) around the corner is brilliant. We share meals, help each other out and do all the regular things families do together. Including squabble sometimes. More please! Breakfast in bed. OK, I’m boasting a bit
here. On the very lucky mornings when Guy hands me a bowl of yoghurt and fruit while I’m propped up on pillows in my PJs, life doesn’t get much better. Smug much? Yep. Given how much I once used to hate mornings, lingering in bed reading the news and hanging out with CJ the cat and drinking coffee is my idea of heaven. Even if the alarm has gone off at 6am and my to-do list feels longer than Santa’s. So in the interest of staying sane and getting through these final weeks, here’s a tip: look after your feet, ask your family for help and start the day with breakfast in bed.

Jolly good fun Saint Nick gets a saucy makeover in this rollicking festive stage show Hannah Davies
I
f anyone knows how to be naughty it’s Stephen Hirst. The 35-year-old will return to the Brisbane Powerhouse next month for his third appearance in festive favourite A Very Naughty Christmas – and he can’t wait to spread some good tidings. “I love doing this show, it’s hilarious,” he says. “I do it every year because it’s such a great night out for people. It’s a bit of escapism in a cabaret style with some of the best performers in Brisbane. We change it up every year and keep pushing the boundaries … all in the name of fun.” The show is essentially a comedy cabaret that pokes fun at traditional yuletide concerts and traditions. Featuring burlesque, drag, and a whole host of singing and dancing styles, the focus is on cheeky fun and audiences are invited to eat, drink and be merry – regardless of their religious beliefs. “We change the lyrics to popular Christmas songs to make them a bit naughty or poke fun at political situations,” says Stephen, who lives at Kangaroo Point. “But at the same time people also get to hear six part harmony on some of their favourite carols, and there are some heartfelt moments too.” Stephen, who plays Santa in the show, is happiest when treading the boards. Growing up with two older brothers in a sport-focused family in central NSW, he had to “break from the norm” to pursue acting.
“I was very much the black sheep of the family,” he laughs. “I did my first show, Anne of Green Gables: The Musical, when I was a little boy of eight, and I just got the bug. As a child I used to read a lot of fantasy books and the creative element of the theatre really appealed to me. “I was lucky enough to be very well supported by my family.” Since then Stephen has performed in more than 20 musicals, including Oklahoma, Into the Woods, Jesus Christ Superstar, Spamalot, Carrie, and The Boy from Oz. He’s also played an army major in the film Parer’s War and a police officer in the horror movie The Fear of Darkness. Theatre is where his passion is though, and he’s pleased to see the Brisbane theatre community is growing. “Year to year it just gets better I think,” he says. “There are some excellent independent companies putting on some great quality work now, as well as Queensland Theatre, QPAC and La Boite. “I think the community really comes together in Brisbane, which is really great to see.” He adds: “One of the things I love about A Very Naughty Christmas is that it’s the same cast every year and it’s always really nice to catch up with them.” Picture: Russell Shakespeare/AAP

Small wonders Painting masterpieces, golfing like a pro and starring in movies are all child’s play for these gifted youngsters
CLAUDIA BUCHANAN, ARTIST, 4 She is the little artist making a big impression. In fact, Claudia Buchanan’s super-sized abstract works are so masterful, it’s hard to believe they have been painted by a four-year-old. The Brookfield cutie’s works appear on her @big_little_art_au Instagram feed and her website, where original pieces start from $1200 and limited-edition prints from $240. And she has some big name patrons in Brisbane architect Shaun Lockyer, who snapped up Pony earlier this year, and Australian artist Ken Done, who recently sent Claudia a signed print and words of encouragement. “When she got it, she was speechless, which is very rare for Claudia,” laughs Claudia’s mum Shannon Deutrom. “She was so thrilled, so excited. She loves watching contemporary artists on YouTube. When I showed her Ken Done she said, ‘Well he’s good. He’s not as good as me, but he’s good’.” Shaun Lockyer, who is designing a new home in northern New South Wales for the Buchanan family, says Claudia’s works are ones of pure, unadulterated expression. “I would consider myself an avid art lover and we have a reasonable amount of 08 BRISBANE NEWS November 27-December 3, 2019
art we have collected, mostly contemporary and Aboriginal works. One of my favourite artists is Sally Gabori, who is now deceased, and when I saw Claudia’s painting, a lot of the things that resonated with me in Sally’s work, the things I love about that work, I see in Claudia’s work,” he says. “I genuinely thought, ‘Holy hell, that’s a painting I want to own’. “It’s an authentic story in a world where art is bought or valued for the wrong reasons. I have (Pony) earmarked to go in my house at Stradbroke Island. “It’s a nice, playful, uplifting painting and it will find its home there as soon as I get it over there.” Claudia comes from creative stock, with mum Shannon a graphic designer and photographer who also paints. Shannon’s mother, the late Maureen Deutrom, was also a talented painter and quilter. Shannon says Claudia, who has three older siblings, completed her first major piece, Jellyfish, at age two, and then said, “Can I have another canvas?” “I said, ‘Sure!’, and it just went from there. She was enjoying the process, it was keeping her busy and away from the TV and iPad and I thought, ‘This is working’, because I could sit with her and do some photo editing or reading or whatever and
She stands back and she looks at it and I’d love to know what’s going on in her head
then she’d just come to me and ask me to open up the paint tubes for her.” Shannon never comments on her daughter’s works. Claudia, who selects her own paint colours at the art supply store, is very much a solo operator. “It’s her painting; I don’t want to change her style. It’s been really interesting for me as a designer to watch her process. She stands back and she looks at it and I’d love to know what’s going on in her head,” Shannon says. “She really does consider her work and then comes back to it and puts colour in another place and then brings me paint and says, ‘Mummy can you open that one?’ and I think, I would never have thought to use that colour, but then she puts it on the canvas and it’s amazing. She’ll get to a certain point where she’ll say to me, ‘I’m done. Can I have a bubble bath?’ ” Twenty per cent of the proceeds from Claudia’s art sales go to Room to Read – Sri Lanka, a charity that seeks to transform the lives of children in low-income communities by focusing on literary and gender equality in education. Shannon’s father Bill Deutrom, from Sri Lanka, has done a lot charity work in his homeland, including sponsoring a girl to attend school and who is now at university. “So I had a thought that while Claudia V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

is learning, it would be nice for her to help other girls learn and grow and go to secondary school because in the poorer areas, they don’t have a chance – they become cleaners, or have children and that’s their life,” Shannon says. “Room to Read is an amazing organisation – they use local writers, local artists and local printers to produce books for the children in the countries they are working in, because if you send over something about a lorry in London for a child in Ethiopia, they don’t understand it, but if they have a story about a tuktuk in a city they can relate to, it will make them want to read.” The opportunity to help others was part of the reason Shannon and husband Cameron Buchanan, who works in private equity, decided to sell Claudia’s pieces. That, and the fact they were fast running out of wall space. “I think Claudia will benefit from it, in learning that she can make a difference in the world,” Shannon says. “It’s not a monetary thing, it’s so she can do something to help people and have that self-pride. She can make a difference. I think we all want to do that, don’t we?”
“Everywhere we go, even the pros say he is unbelievable,” says Jeran Fuentes of his son Jeju, a pint-sized pro golfer in the making. With his miniature clubs and killer swing, the youngster is taking on the world with the help of his parents Jeran and Juhyun, both social golfers. The Kelvin Grove State College Prep student, who recently took out the top spot in the US Kids Local Tour Championships, was sinking putts before he could talk. “The first time he picked up a club, he was 14 months,” says Jeran, who emigrated from the Philippines in 1998. “He hit the ball at first contact and I remember thinking, ‘Wow, now that’s hand-eye coordination’.” From the age of three, Jeju was practising his swing and playing fun-filled golf games at home in his back yard. “When we train it’s always been a part of play. We have stories and activities that we include to make sure he is constantly having fun,” Jeran says. Having won multiple junior tournaments in Brisbane, Jeju has qualified for junior championships in New Zealand, America, Canada and Italy. Given he regularly competes against players who are several years older (not to mention taller), it’s a staggering achievement. “Even though he is five, we don’t want him to miss these opportunities,” says Jeran, who works as a ballroom dancing instructor, while Jeju’s mother Juhyun is studying architecture. “He has a retainer from Puma, which is amazing, but it is still very costly to compete in every tournament.” The Bulimba Golf Club, where Jeran is a member, also supports Jeju’s journey through quarterly fundraisers. “He really loves the competition and to win,” Jeran says with a chuckle. “It’s really motivating for him to compete against new competitors and continue to challenge himself, so the fundraisers are important.” An only child, Jeran also loves playing with his friends, swimming, dancing, singing and reading novels. But his favourite place is on the green. “As soon as you give him a golf club, it’s like he’s 15,” Jeran says. “The skill and maturity comes out all of a sudden and he doesn’t seem five at all.” Jeju is a big Rory McIlroy fan and, if his winning streak continues into adulthood, he might well emulate his hero from Northern Ireland. “He’s really focused on being the best,” Jeran says. “We don’t want him to just focus on being ‘the next Tiger Woods’ we want him to progress his skills and be the best he can be. He will be the next big thing,” says his proud father. “You can feel it in his energy.” PHOEBE EVANS Instagram: @jejufuentes

BELLA ROSE, ACTOR, 12
I
f Brisbane’s Bella Rose looks familiar, it’s likely because her angelic face has graced your television screen – more than a few times. The Coorparoo youngster has already amassed 70 film and television credits, and just wrapped her most challenging role to date – in independent film Magdala Rose, filmed in Queensland by Angel Studios and also starring screen veteran Rowena Wallace. “There were so many amazing moments while filming Magdala Rose, which was a long process that included six months of rehearsals and 12 months of filming, mostly on nights and on weekends,” she says. Based on real events in 13th century France, the medieval adventure drama is the story of the last stand of the Cathar heretics, a pacifist Christian group. In 1244, a time of religious persecution, Pope Innocent IV and King Louis IX sought to eradicate the group, the last of whom found protection at the Castle of Montsegur. In the film, Bella plays Meg, a special young guest at the castle whose protection is central to the film’s storyline. “I love acting because I find it interesting to transform into a different character and experience an unusual situation. When I am working on a film the challenges are learning scripts, and then staying in character and being really engaged with what is happening in the scene – you can’t get distracted by things off set or you could ruin the shot.” The Year 7 Somerville House student even did her own stunt work. “I did some rope work in the studio on a green screen and outdoors on a small cliff that looks big with tricky camera angles, (but) the highlight was riding a beautiful white horse named Crystal.” While the talented youngster is skilled in singing, dancing and acting, there is one other skill required – organisation. “Because I really enjoy what I do, as a family we just make it work,” says Bella, who is an only child. “My mum is super organised and an amazing scheduler, and

my dad calls me Busy Issy. My days are mostly school and homework, and then I fit in auditions, learning scripts, rehearsals and training (with Ajhriahna Moore of Blacknote Music) around my school day.” Bella has a film studio at home, where she records auditions for her Australian and US agents, who forward the tapes on to casting directors around the world. She films two to three auditions a week, before and after school. “However, most of my learning is done by volunteering on student films … working on projects with film students is my favourite place to learn.” Bella has been studying acting for six years, with her first job on children’s television show Pipsqueaks, filmed at Channel 7 studios at Mt Coot-tha. “I was a child guest who was interviewed by four very big fluffy puppets – the show was about little kids teaching the puppets about the world.” It’s a humble beginning to what Bella hopes will evolve into a successful career. “I hope to be a working, everyday actor maybe on a long-running TV series, and one day own my own film production company and make movies.”

TRAILBLAZER
In good hands Post-op patients are pampered at this cosy Paddington abode LISA MURRAY Owner, Home Away from Hospital Paddington What’s new with you? I recently marked two years since opening my Home Away from Hospital. The bulk of my clients are eye or cosmetic surgery patients but I am happy to care for anyone after any surgery who needs a place to stay and recover, and attend pre or follow-up medical appointments. What gave you the idea? A friend from Las Vegas came to Brisbane for eye surgery. As she had no family here and I was not home that weekend, she had to find someone to provide this service. Afterwards I thought, nothing there I cannot do. I have a big, beautiful empty house in Paddington, my children have left the nest, I have three bathrooms and I love cooking and taking care of people.
PEOPLE PERSON ... Lisa Murray prepares delicious meals for guests at her Home Away from Hospital.
What are the most common procedures? Cataract and other eye surgeries are my biggest group but also cosmetic surgery, from liposuction for “love handles” and double chins to facelifts and tummy tucks. Work seems to be cheaper here than on the Gold Coast so I host Goldies. Often I cannot see why they feel they need cosmetic work, but it’s often a life change that prompts it. Divorce or weight loss ...
Do you have medical qualifications? I’m not a nurse but I have St John’s Ambulance certification. The job requires more common sense, sensitivity, compassion, organisation and cleanliness than real nursing skills.
How do you care for clients? I pick clients up in recovery, listen to the instructions and support them in following the after-care procedures. I prepare meals for them and make sure they are comfortable and the next day take them to follow up consultations or to their transport or home. We watch Netflix, chat, nap, eat, read. Whatever they want to do.
How does it all work? Most hospitals or clinics will insist on the patient giving details of who will pick them up and care for them post-surgery before they will admit them. Frequently patients do not have anyone in a position to fill this role, particularly people from regional Queensland and interstate. Perhaps their children or friends are at work and unable to take time off. This is where I step in.
Your favourite part of the job? The cooking. In my experience, people want simple comfort food after surgeons have been fiddling with their bits. I call it “farm food”. Roasts. Braises. Baked barramundi is a favourite. I usually bake something slightly sweet, either banana bread or rhubarb crumble to accompany the meals. I can however turn the menu on a dime. I made butter chicken with paratha
instead of roast chicken one night once I heard the guest loved curry. Food is medicine to me. Good nutrition will help them sleep and repair. What’s the feedback been like? Guests say that staying with me is like a sleepover with a friend. They confide in me the most personal things – things they have often not spoken of in years. Family rifts. Estrangement. It’s all interesting to me. About half my guests are from regional areas. Some are Brisbane folk who don’t have anyone available to care for them. There are a thousand interesting stories from their lives. We’ve all had loss and grief. Disappointments. Stories of resilience and life-affirming acts. What do you get out of it personally? I really enjoy caring for my guests. They love the food and I can see they are often not used to being pampered. I love to be appreciated, and I am a doer who prefers to be busy. I try to listen and learn from all my guests, even if it’s only patience! What does it cost? The actual procedure day is $340. This includes pick up after the procedure, the room and private bathroom, all meals and
follow-up transport. Extension days before and after are less ... more like a simple room and board situation. What did you work at previously? I’m a retired PR consultant/arts manager. I lived and worked internationally and my children were born and raised in Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and China. I’ve also worked as a relocation consultant for corporate executives in Singapore and Australia. I just like people. When and where are you happiest? On the yoga mat after Ashtanga. It clears my head of clutter and softens my position on everything from politics to people. I’m ready again to try to practise honesty, compassion and kindness in all my affairs. What do you love about Brisbane? I love the cultural centre, my village of Paddington and just being in my beautiful home. My house has central air, but seriously, there is a climate emergency out there and the heat is the only thing that would move me. I love the Ithaca Pool and have recently taken up ocean swimming. Our beaches are amazing ... the best. LEESA MAHER homeawayfromhospital.com

Just beet it You don’t have to be vegetarian to enjoy this take on beef tartare, says chef Alastair McLeod Revisionism is a pleasing part of cooking for me. I enjoy the process of digging up a sod, turning it over and pushing the fork through it to see what I can find. I also enjoy an analogy. This tartare is neither raw nor realised from ruminant. That dogma matters less. Using language that paints a picture of the dish is more important than adhering to the culinary canon. The beetroot has an earthy sweetness and substantially sates. Try this iteration of tartare to tread a little lighter on the sod on which you stand.
BEETROOT TARTARE, PUFFED QUINOA, SESAME LABNEH Ingredients 250g red beetroot, roasted and peeled 250g golden beetroot, roasted and peeled 1 golden shallot, finely chopped 2tbs chopped fresh mint 1tbs sherry vinegar 2tbs baby capers 2tsp grain mustard 1 lemon, juice and zest Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 2tbs puffed quinoa, fried until crispy Turkish bread, to serve
Method Cut beets into a small dice then toss with shallot, mint, sherry vinegar, capers and mustard, juice and season with salt and pepper. Serve beet mixture over sesame labneh then scatter with lemon zest and quinoa. Serve with grilled Turkish bread. Serves 4
Sesame labneh (make ahead) Ingredients 250g Greek yoghurt ½tsp sea salt 2tbs tahini ½ lemon, juiced 1 small clove garlic, crushed
Method Stir yoghurt and salt together until smooth. Line a sieve with a double layer of muslin and pour in yoghurt mixture. Fold over muslin and leave to drain overnight in the fridge. It’s on the river – almost in it – with a sweeping water vista when the Kookaburra Queen isn’t moored like a monolithic view-killer. I reckon it’s been brightened up, made more airy by the Rico crew, less sombre perhaps than Aria. It seems a bit more relaxed too, more open space, and definitely less expensive, but still erring towards the formal. Even the bar seems brighter and more inviting. It’s mostly Spanish-themed with a dabbling of South America, at least as far as the menu goes, and laced with seafood. I walk to my table past a tank of live marron – not sleepy and upside down, but as lively as a preschool – which later appear as an optional addition to the paella. It’s a nice touch and hints at some pretty good, fresh seafood coming out of V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
the Rico kitchen, which isn’t a great surprise as it’s owned by the George’s Paragon crew just up the stairs. And I order the seafood paella ($55), but without the marron option (which is another $55), simply because I’m dining on a budget. And I don’t love it. There’s no socarrat – that’s the chewy, sometimes crunchy, intensely-flavoured crust where the rice meets the pan which, while not a deal-breaker, is part of what makes really good paella really good: the best bit of the dish, like the skin on KFC chicken and the batter on a Dagwood dog. It’s not lacking for seafood – prawns, mussels, fish, squid and cockles – but there’s better seafood in town. Which kind of makes sense – why squander top-notch seafood on a wet dish? But in the end, this is more like a so-so seafood risotto in a paella pan than anything more spectacular. Kingfish ceviche ($17) is quite the opposite – a very good piece of fish (well, four pieces really), but under-seasoned and just missing the electricity of good ceviche.
There’s something awry in its marinade; it’s kind of flat. A sprinkle of salt flakes helps. Beef cheek empanadas ($17) are stellar: like a good, rich Irish stew, peas and all, stuffed into short pastry. The beef cheek is sticky-rich and beautifully tender. And croquettas ($9) are laced with bacalao – salt-cod – which takes them from a lump of crumbed potato into something delicious. The drinks list dabbles with the Spanish/South American theme with a trio of sangrias and a handful of Chilean, Argentine and Spanish wines. But the bulk of the wine list is made up of Antipodean wines. Rico is a very different offering than Aria was – it’s less lofty and certainly doesn’t pack the same sort of culinary punch, wine list clout or even precision of service. But somehow the makeover has focused attention on the river rather than the interior, and everything simply seems more relaxed.

Across the miles Singer Darren Hanlon will stop at nothing to deliver fans their Christmas gift Brian Bennion When you live between Melbourne, Portland in the US, and Gympie, there are bound to be moments reminiscent of the film Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Preparing for his 14th Christmas tour, which winds around the country – from Broome, Western Australia, then back home to the family farm at Wolvi near Gympie for Christmas – singer-songwriter Darren Hanlon says the comparisons to the film can get a little close to reality. “I’m not really suited to the job of an organiser, a tour manager, so things are often going wrong,” Darren says. “We rent a van and I try to do as much of the tour on the road as I can. It is hard to drive from Melbourne all the way to Brisbane in December. “I’m often running out of petrol and having to hitchhike to the next town to get petrol. I’ve sent the car keys back in my banjo case in another car and we were just stranded. Oh yeah, that was a dark day. “Often I have a support act who has probably never seen a lot of the country. There’s been a few from America and one from New Zealand, so I like to have a little bit of a tourism element to the tour to show them around and stay in some pretty weird and wonderful places. And often the support act comes home to Gympie for Christmas; that’s happened a few times.” Darren’s partner, musician Shelley
DRIVE TIME … Life as a travelling musician has been good to Queensland folk singer Darren Hanlon.
Short, is from Portland and he records with a producer there and his tours now frequently take him through the US and Europe. “Travelling is the best part,” he says. “Growing up in Gympie I never thought I would get this rambling fever but I’ve certainly got it. I’ve been travelling so much the past 20 years I’ve got all ports in the storm; I’m well looked after.” Darren established his own brand of folk with his trademark quirky lyrics, penning and performing the occasional song while guitarist of The Simpletons and made his mark as a solo artist with the beautiful Falling Aeroplanes in 2000. His Christmas tour has become a tradition with his fans, and his way of winding down from a busy year, hiring a
van and saving a seat for a hand-picked guest artist. This year Darren will bring along Melbourne’s Hugh F as the tour support. “It started as a low key way of finishing off the year,” he says. “During the year I’d be doing tours with a full band and this was just me. It started in Sydney and then it went Sydney to Melbourne and then it included Brisbane soon after that. I had a year off doing Brisbane and I got so many emails and protests, it was really nice. Because I’m from Queensland, Brisbane welcomes you. “Brisbane is the last show. I do my Christmas shopping the next day and then head back to Gympie. The Brisbane show is always the most raucous, because even though it’s a sit-down venue, it’s the one
closest to Christmas. You are really on the home stretch and people are in holiday mode, party mode.” The tour now takes in regional towns along the way and this year includes 11 shows. “Now that it has grown to this thing, other cities have heard about it and one by one I’ve added cities and for my own interest I’ve added at least one new town every year.” Darren has been in Beechworth, Victoria, writing the final pieces for an album of stripped-back folk songs set to come out next year. If we’re lucky, he’ll try them out on the Christmas tour. Darren Hanlon Christmas Show, Dec 22, $28, Princess Theatre, Woolloongabba flippinyeahindustries.bigcartel.com

ART
BRIGHT ON … The abstract paintings of Melbourne artist Miranda Skoczek include (clockwise from top left) Klee And The Berbers; Enveloped; Untitled tapestry; and Viscera.
Colour therapy Known for her jewel-like palette, Miranda Skoczek discovers the ideal inspiration in Brisbane’s jacarandas Fiona Purdon Miranda Skoczek believes art can trigger emotional responses deep in a person’s soul, whether through the medium of music or painting. That is why she is using jazz legend Charles Mingus’ 1990 release Better Get It In Your Soul to sum up the creative process behind her new 15-painting show at Edwina Corlette Gallery, New Farm. “I identify most strongly with jazz due to the process of spontaneity and V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
immediacy, which is how my work is created,’’ she says. “My work is a physical response to what I’m seeing and feeling.’’ Miranda, based in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges, is known for her jewel-like colour palette. For the first time in a show she has been inspired to use violets, purples and lavenders, including a shade similar to Brisbane’s flowering jacaranda tree, evident in works Enveloped and Shifting Splendour.
“Jacarandas are one of my absolute favourite trees, they are everywhere and I was subconsciously thinking of Brisbane. Brisbane has a special tropical light and colour,” she says. “I use colour decoratively. I delight in putting unexpected colour combinations together. I have an understanding of what colours work well together.” Miranda has also drawn inspiration from a trip to India in March with Sydney stylist Megan Morton. She visited Jaipur, known as the Pink City due to the dominant colour scheme of its buildings. The city’s terracotta pinks, fluorescent oranges and cardamom yellows are evident in her work. Miranda’s father was born in India and, with her love of interior design, architecture and travel, it’s a place she loves to visit. “I’ve travelled a lot and there’s no other country which speaks to me like India
does. It’s the country’s innate love of colour,” she says. Miranda’s Polish grandparents Marysia and Kazik lived in India in the 1940s before emigrating to Australia. Miranda’s grandmother was among a group of more than 600 Polish children and women who were displaced and orphaned in Siberia, before they embarked on a tortuous journey to India in 1942. In India they were saved by the Maharajah of Nawanagar who fed and housed the women and children in a camp called “Little Poland”. It’s an incredible backstory which no doubt adds texture to Miranda’s work, which US fans will be able to see first-hand at her first solo show in New York in March 2020. FILM
KNIVES OUT (M) hhhhj Director Rian Johnson Starring Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette Hercule Poirot better watch his back. A pompous new super sleuth appears to have appropriated his preposterous persona, although Daniel Craig’s version – Benoit Blanc – substitutes loud ties and braces for that extraordinary handlebar moustache. Craig has also traded Poirot’s distinctive Belgian accent for an exaggerated Southern drawl. To describe Knives Out simply as a homage to Agatha Christie would be selling director Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) rather short. This razor-sharp whodunit, which features a wonderfully eclectic cast, is more like a 21st century reboot – the murdermystery’s answer to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek, if you will. Johnson sets the tone with a cracker opening shot of two dogs running through the fog-shrouded grounds of the recentlydeceased’s faux-Gothic mansion. But while it’s dressed like one of the Queen of Crime’s enduring classics, the film’s dialogue is deliciously deliberate and the characters have a brittle self-awareness that feels very contemporary. The film’s underlying social commentary, about privilege and entitlement, is also right on point and the
RAZOR-SHARP ... Daniel Craig and Ana De Armas in a scene from the Rian Johnson-directed entertaining whodunit, Knives Out. fiendishly complicated puzzle-box narrative is unusually satisfying. But what’s perhaps most surprising about Knives Out, which investigates the death of a best-selling crime writer on the night of his 85th birthday celebrations, is the filmmaker’s ability to rework overfamiliar tropes in a manner that makes them seem fresh again. The identity of the killer is revealed unusually early, but that only adds to the intrigue as the dysfunctional Thrombey family implodes in the aftermath of their wealthy patriarch’s death. Jamie Lee Curtis has a lot of fun with the
role of the domineering daughter, Don Johnson is suitably cast as her weak-willed husband and Chris Evans plays against type as their self-serving son. Also taking a keen interest in the contents of late Harlan Thrombey’s (Christopher Plummer) will are his weakwilled son (Michael Shannon), who runs the publishing arm of his father’s estate, Toni Collette’s widowed daughter-in-law, and their respective offspring. Putting everyone just a little off balance is Thrombey’s loyal nurse and companion, Marta Cabrera (Blade Runner 2049’s Ana de Armas), who everyone insists is “like one of
OFFICIAL SECRETS (MA15+) hhhjj Director Gavin Hood Starring Keira Knightley, Matt Smith, Ralph Fiennes A small act of courage has a big knock-on effect in this earnest political thriller, based on real events. Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley) leans more towards clear-eyed public servant than political firebrand. But whistleblowers come in all shapes and sizes and Official Secrets’ success in illustrating that is one of the Brit-American co-production’s biggest strengths. When Gun is directed by the US National Security Agency to collect compromising information on UN Security members so they can be blackmailed into voting in favour of the invasion of Iraq, the relatively low-ranking intelligence specialist feels compelled to take a stand. Without fully appreciating the likely consequences of her actions, Gun leaks the memo to the press in the – as it turns out, rather naive – hope of averting a war. “Doing the right thing” unleashes the 16 BRISBANE NEWS November 27-December 3, 2019
UNDER THE GUN ... Keira Knightley as Katharine Gun in Official Secrets. full force of the British authorities’ power upon Gun and her asylum-seeking Kurdish husband, who comes dangerously and suspiciously close to being deported. Official Secrets takes an appealingly relaxed approach to the scenes in the Observer newsroom where journalist Martin Bright (Matt Smith) and rabblerousing US correspondent Ed Vulliamy (Rhys Ifans) test both the paper’s editorial position and the veracity of the leak.
The scenes involving veteran human rights lawyer Ben Emmerson (Ralph Fiennes) and his team feel similarly authentic and the final courtroom “showdown” is nicely underplayed. But the film puts Gun front and centre, as it should, supported by a solid performance from a dressed-down Knightley, who successfully conveys the strength in her character’s vulnerability. Having leaked the document, initially
the family”, even though no one can remember which country she comes from – the family’s insular attitude to Marta’s national identity is a running joke throughout the film. Further unsettling potential suspects is the strange affliction from which Marta suffers – unable to tell a lie, she vomits each time she utters an untruth. While Craig’s performance occasionally wobbles under the weight of its own artifice, the momentum created by Knives Out’s multiple plot twists, turns and double-backs corrects his balance each time. Clever, funny and hugely entertaining.
without result, Gun is almost relieved when her actions appear to have amounted to nothing. Then, when the story breaks on the front page of the conservative London newspaper, all hell breaks loose. Determined to make an example of Gun, the British Government tries her for treason. The ordinary hero stands her ground in the face of enormous pressure and with very little support. The odds are officially stacked against her – at one point, Gun is informed that she isn’t allowed to reveal the details of her actions to her defending counsel. Official Secrets is an intelligent, multilayered spy drama with plenty to say, but it drags a little in places. And while that might be an accurate representation of real life, The Report, Scott Z. Burns’ gripping exposé of the CIA’s Enhanced Interrogation Techniques, which is currently showing in Australian cinemas, has already proven that, in the right circumstances, a paper-pushing bureaucrat (Adam Driver) can be just as compelling as a Bourne or a Bond. LIGHT AND BRIGHT … Clever design in this renovation ensured open spaces, room for kids to roam, and functional and practical areas for family living.
T
wo doorknockers in the shape of the letter M greet visitors at the front door of Elisha and Luke Manning’s home in Camp Hill. The reference to their surname is one of the many personal touches Elisha, 35, has made to the old two-bedroom Queenslander they raised, renovated and built in underneath before moving in two weeks before Christmas in 2017. “It had been rented at the time we purchased it and needed a lot of work, however we could see the potential it had and knew that with some planning it could be a wonderful home for our family,” she says. For the past two years Elisha, who used to run her own interior design business, has been busy putting her skills to work to make the house a home for their whole V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
family including their four children Lachlan, 9, Bailey, 7, Isla, 3, and Sienna, 1. “I never want our home to feel like a show room. I want it to be stylish but at the same time practical,” Elisha says. Having renovated properties previously, they were eager to do it again and create a long-term family home where they could make memories. “We had been house hunting for a while and couldn’t find anything we loved that had the right layout for our family in our price range. We had renovated before so knew the ins and outs of it and knew that a renovation could give us the house we desired both aesthetically and functionally. “While renovating is more expensive than a new build, we love the character of period homes and the charm they exude. One of the things I loved about the
original house was the moulded ceilings which we have kept upstairs,” Elisha says. When it came to the new design, Elisha had a vision of light and bright spaces with wide open doors so the children could roam freely inside and out. They also fell in love with the classic charm of Hamptons-style homes, so incorporated elements such as weatherboards, custom shaker cabinetry, wide planked European oak floorboards and a neutral colour palette with hints of blues. Despite the attention and care poured into the decor, they knew better than to be too precious about any of it and made smart decisions to minimise wear and tear. “With so many kids it was important for me that the house looked aesthetically pleasing but was also functional and
practical. Guests are always welcome to leave their shoes on and things such as our dining chairs and breakfast bar stools are all able to be wiped down easily. We are a pretty no-fuss family,” she says. The addition of a mudroom near the laundry was another genius move. “It’s definitely a feature of the home that we couldn’t live without. With four kids there is a plethora of school and sporting paraphernalia and the mudroom helps to sort and store this,” she says. At the front of the property, black and white awnings over the windows are a focal point and help set off the rest of the house. “I am a black and white lover from way back and have never met a black and white stripe I didn’t like. Standing at the front of the house, it is very stark and I wanted to break that up with a feature element. Black and white awnings have a very classic feel to them which I adore,” she says. As for the front entrance, Elisha wanted it to make a statement. An oversized door was chosen from WoodworkersXS and painted black before the large silver doorknob and M doorknockers were added. “They’re a little fun and are a good conversation starter for people who haven’t visited our home before,” she says. Simple beauty There’s an easy elegance to Erin Lightfoot’s designs that inevitably draw the eye Phoebe Evans “I really believe objects should be both useful and beautiful,” proclaims Erin Lightfoot, who delivers both with her handmade earrings, bangles and vases. We are touring the designer’s busy studio at the Red Hill home she shares with husband and business partner Tang Oudomvilay, and their nine-month-old daughter Ren. Every bench is lined with pieces at various stages in production, all deceptively simple forms made from porcelain and decorated in subtle colours and geometric patterns. There is a simple, easy elegance to Erin’s creations, which she says are influenced by the Bauhaus, Modernist and Art Deco design movements. Right now, it’s action stations. Erin’s part-time helpers, Danielle and Jonathan, are transforming two lumps of porcelain on the balcony to the sound of a Guy Raz podcast and, such is the energetic buzz, I can feel my own inner artist emerging. Back to the tour, and Erin and Tang are talking more about the evolution of Erin’s iconic designs that are stocked in galleries and gift boutiques across the country. “As the daughter of an architect and sculptor I was always doing creative projects with my mum, mostly drawing and painting,” says Erin, placing Ren on a nearby rug. “It wasn’t until I was studying fashion that I started playing around with ceramics.” As a final project before graduating

from QUT in 2010, the fashion major, with the help of her talented mum, created a range of bangles made from porcelain that subsequently made the pages of Vogue Australia. “It took a lot of persistence,” Erin says. “Being a round surface, it can be a little difficult to get all the elements perfect but I was pretty determined.” Other accolades have included being a finalist in the Rising Star: Fashion Label category in Creative3 The Awards, an initiative of QUT Creative Enterprise Australia. Rising demand for Erin’s handmade creations keeps the new mum and her team busy. “Tang and I take turns going to the studio and looking after Ren. We definitely don’t get as much done as we
used to but I am very aware that she is only going to be a baby for a short time, so I’m not too worried about it.” The nine-month-old babbles merrily in the corner, enchanted by a loose tassel she has managed to find in the rug. “It’s hugely enjoyable having a baby,” Erin says looking fondly over her shoulder. “It can be pretty all consuming having the studio in our home, but that’s OK.” With a new collection launched earlier this year and several custom designs in the works too, it’s hard to believe that a baby has slowed this duo down at all. “I really love the new collection, particularly the cross hoops,” Erin says of her new range of earrings. “They were inspired by traditional Spanish tiles, which I adore.” The black, white and blue design dangles from the end of her finger and I fall in love. “Because they’re ceramic people assume they are really delicate, but they’re actually much sturdier than they look.” After spending an hour surrounded by so much beauty, I now spot Erin’s handiwork all over Brisbane – Mott and Mulberry at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre and Paddington’s The Green Tangerine to the Museum of Brisbane in the city. here’s a special group of Australians keeping the magic of Christmas alive each year. They are the people who dress their homes in festive light displays for the joy of others. Allianz Australia’s Spotlight Your Sparkle competition, in partnership with Brisbane News, aims to reward this community spirit by offering cash prizes of $1000 to the best homes in the country. And in the true spirit of the season, they will also donate $1000 to each winner’s charity of choice. Allianz Australia chief market manager Nick Adams says it is heartening to see the tradition being upheld each year. “In Australia we love to celebrate by decorating our homes and gardens with Christmas lights,” Nick says. “To help celebrate and encourage more Aussies to share their festive sparkle with their local community, we have launched Allianz’s Spotlight Your Sparkle competition. “The competition is about recognising the contribution these local Christmas light displays make to the wider community, while also giving back to those less fortunate than us.” Allianz chief festive officer Jamie Durie (pictured), one of the competition judges, says they are particularly keen to see patriotic and sustainable installations. “I’m going to be looking for innovation, I’m going to be looking for sustainable style ... and I want them to be Australian,” Jamie says. “Our version of a Christmas tree could be every bit as Australian as the gum tree and the banksias and the grevilleas that surround us. “For me, one of the most perfect trees around to decorate would be the
woolly bush. It’s super waterwise, it looks like a Christmas tree but it’s an Australian native. Do it in a festive way but also remember that we celebrate Christmas here in the summer.” Instead of buying disposable decorations destined for landfill, Jamie suggests recycled items such as old fence posts can be used to make unique displays. “You can also reduce your emissions over the Christmas period by actually attaching your solar panels to your Christmas lights,” he says. Jamie says the charity aspect of the winner’s prize was an opportunity to be thankful for our blessings. “There’s never been a more important time to think of those less fortunate than us,” he says. Jamie says there’s nothing quite like taking his own family to see neighbourhood Christmas lights. “I love the people that actually get out and decorate the externals of their house, I think it’s wonderful,” he says. “The friendships that get built and also the way that your own family glues together in times like Christmas and decorating together, it’s all part of the journey.”

Phil Brown Being a person who lives his whole life in denial, I’m not sure I want to even think about my bucket list yet. But if I was forced to ... what would be on it? I find it alarming that young people nowadays talk about things that are on their bucket list. Just to be clear I found a definition of what a bucket list is online. It is “a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying”. Now you really shouldn't be thinking about that when you are in your 20s. That’s not a bucket list, that’s just ordinary aspirational stuff. The whole bucket list thing got popular after the 2007 film The Bucket List. In it billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and car mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) are complete strangers, until fate lands them in the same hospital
room. The men find they have two things in common: a need to come to terms with who they are and what they have done with their lives, and a desire to complete a list of things they want to see and do before they die. Against their doctor’s advice, the men leave the hospital and set out on the adventure of a lifetime. It’s a terrific movie – it would have to be with those two guys in it – and it is something worth thinking about. Being a person who lives his whole life in denial though, I’m not sure I want to even think about my bucket list yet. But if I was forced to make up one, what would be on it?
Let me think. OK here goes. I want to go to Xi’an in China and see the Terracotta Army for starters. I would also like to see the Great Wall of China because I never have except on television. I would like to walk a stretch of it too, say 100m or so, that’ll do me. I would also like to ride The Orient Express from Venice to Paris and hopefully no one would be murdered en route. If someone was though, Hercule Poirot would solve that case, if we could track him down. I would like to see the pyramids of Egypt and travel on the Nile by boat which is another Agatha Christie kind of adventure. I know, I have watched too much TV.
I also have a hankering to visit the Isle of Mull in Scotland. I have been to Scotland a few times but never to Mull so that’s on the list. I also want to visit St Petersburg to attend a ballet at the The Mariinsky Theatre. I’m keen to visit Patagonia too but just wish it was a bit closer. (The rest of South America doesn’t interest me at all.) Well, that’s a start. There’s no ballooning or risk-taking involved with anything on my list. I certainly won’t be climbing Everest and as for the Camino, well I’d like to drive it instead of walking. And I would also like to do a lot of lying down, preferably in luxury hotel suites. I’m a simple soul but you know that. Don’t you?

Introducing the UltraGrow Collection of Crafted Potting Mixes, Garden Soils, Composts and Fertilisers FREE from Industrial liquids and poorly processed green-waste.
INFUSED WITH NUTRIENTS AND BILLIONS OF MICROBES
At last, soils and potting mixes that actually perform like it says on the bag. Each soil or potting mix in the collection comes pre-loaded with nutrients, natural water holding organics and minerals while reinforced with billions of resilient microbes to give your garden the best possible start.
WASTE FREE WITH NO STINKING NASTIES
The story of UltraGrow began because many commercially made waste-based soils and potting mixes often contain all sorts of ‘things’ that can be nasty. Every ingredient included in the UltraGrow Collection has been carefully selected confirming they are entirely free of contaminants, partially composted green-waste and industrial liquids.
LONG LASTING GROWING MEDIA THAT’S BIOLOGICALLY ALIVE
It’s not just about the full suite of nutrients that is available but for how long they last. The UltraGrow Collection will provide your plants with all the nurturing they need from 3 to 16-months and much longer. They’re all infused with microorganisms working around the clock which directly contribute to the biological fertility of UltraGrow products. Selected minerals like Zeolite and organics like Biochar, to name only two, will live on in your garden soils for many years. They enhance carbon sequestration from the atmosphere, reduce leaching into the environment, hold water and help activate nutrients for longer.
We craft these boutique products ourselves in small batches with you the gardener, the landscaper, the architect and the nursery in mind as we bring you a new ethical approach to waste-free growing media production and distribution.
IT’S TIME TO GIVE YOUR GARDEN A BOOST! After a long dry year, your garden will be desperate for some TLC and now is a great time to get your hands dirty. Top up your existing soil with UltraGrow Black Label Garden Soil and grab a bucket of UltraGrow Garden Revitaliser Fertliser. Open-plan elegance from
penthouse Impressive views along the Brisbane River are the highlight Foliage surrounds this top floor property, affording an added sense of privacy while not obscuring the panoramic views that extend across the Brisbane River to Hamilton Hill, Bulimba and Hawthorne that feature from the property’s living spaces. The open-plan living style begins from the minute guests enter the wide entry hallway, which leads left into an expansive living and dining area. Neutral tones and travertine floors extend throughout the space, with large, glass sliding doors leading out onto a wraparound covered balcony.
Here, premium adjustable sunshades allow for year-round enjoyment, with glass balustrades extending the length of the balcony allowing for unobstructed views of the river. Back inside, a generously sized kitchen with stainless steel detailing and intricate mosaic splashback links the formal and informal living spaces situated on either side, including a large sitting area. Here, access to a small balcony via glass sliding doors offers north-facing views of the historic Teneriffe Woolstore facades, while providing optimal cross breezes throughout the home. The apartment also offers three spacious bedrooms all of which are carpeted with built-in storage and views of the surrounding city.

The main suite includes a walk-in wardrobe with tiled ensuite and double vanity, with private access to the main balcony. The rare inner-city offering of a fourcar garage allows for extra project or storage space, with the home designed for downsizers looking to move, or the growing modern family. An added sense of luxury can be found in the smaller details such as ducted airconditioning and premium window fittings throughout. Located 850m from the Teneriffe CityCat terminal, the residence has direct links to Bulimba, upstream to Brisbane CBD and downstream to Portside and Northshore Hamilton, as well as some of the city’s most enjoyed dining experiences.
European style This luxury European-style property has been designed for entertaining, and features a 13m lap pool, a championshipsized floodlit tennis court, and multiple terraces, formal and casual spaces. Capri sits in a leafy locale close to Racecourse Rd’s cafe precinct and the Brisbane River, and spans two huge levels with five bedrooms. It’s a private sanctuary with lush gardens, courtyards and mature trees. At the front of the property, a path leads past a double garage and a gazebo to a porch. Beyond the grand entryway, there’s a living room with marble tiles floors, ornate wallpaper, and French doors to a poolside terrace. However, it’s the sweeping staircase with ornate iron balustrades that draws the eye. An office, powder room, and a bedroom with an ensuite sit nearby, while the rear wing offers a casual meals area, the kitchen, formal dining room with terrace access, and a formal living room with a fireplace. This room has French doors to the tennis court. The huge meals area has views of the
Italian-style outdoor terrace and pool, while the adjacent galley kitchen boasts Miele and Gaggenau appliances, Vintec wine fridges, and a butler’s pantry. Upstairs, there’s a large library or media room, as well as the four remaining bedrooms. Featuring beautifully polished black Japanese ash floors, the rooms each have built-in wardrobes. The main suite has an ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, Juliet balcony, and rooftop terrace overlooking the leafy surrounds.

South Bank is one of Queensland’s most loved places. South Bank Corporation is creating a master plan to revitalise South Bank for the next 30 years and beyond. An important part of the process is community feedback. One of the ways we will gather feedback is through advisory groups. Advisory group members will provide advice on the needs of the community and youth, as well as contribute ideas to grow the precinct’s offer and appeal. Meetings are expected to run for two hours and will occur at least three times during the master planning process. Nominations are open EOI are open for the two advisory groups – the Community Advisory Group and Future Leaders (Youth) Advisory Group. How do I apply? Apply at www.futuresouthbank.com.au and search ‘advisory group’. The terms of references containing selection criteria are available on the website. Closing date EOIs close at 5pm on Monday 16 December. We will contact you after the application closing date to inform you if your application has been successful.
