This week... It is a sad fact that one in six Australian couples experiences fertility problems and the terrible heartache that goes along with it. For Brisbane public relations powerhouse Fleur Madden, a woman used to getting the job done, her inability to carry a baby to full term became a serious problem to solve, and she persisted until she welcomed “dream baby” Josiah – her son with husband Jimmy Gwisai – and hands-down our cutest ever cover star. Writer Hannah Davies documents Fleur’s incredible journey to motherhood in our cover story (P8). Regular readers will likely recall our story on Tom Hill (Sep 12-18 edition), the young cyclist gearing up for the gruelling 1000km London to Monaco bike ride to raise funds for Blue Marine Foundation. I am happy to report that Tom, who suffers from a rare and aggressive form of arthritis, not only completed the ride – to a rapturous welcome at the Prince’s Palace – but he also raised £5000 ($A9350) for the ocean charity. Never say never.

Fighting words Brisbane boxer Faris Chevalier is on the lookout for a worthy opponent

F
rench-born boxer Faris Chevalier is up for a fight. The reigning Australian Super Middleweight Champion has not had a bout since September 2016 after several scheduled fights were cancelled for various reasons. “It’s frustrating that fighters are avoiding me. At the end of the day, I only get better when I fight,’’ he says. “I keep training because I’ve got the mindset that I have to stay ready. I welcome a challenge from any Australian boxer ranked in the top 10.’’ Faris, who has held the Australian title for three years, fell in love with Brisbane as soon as he moved to the city

from France in 2010. “Australia is the nation where all the sport happens and I wanted to experience a different lifestyle. In Paris it rains all the time; it’s always grey. Here in Brisbane I can have an outdoor lifestyle. I initially moved to Sydney and Melbourne but I couldn’t handle the cold.’’ It was also in Brisbane where he found love with local girl Michelle Sacurom. The couple married and have children Amina, 2, Faris Junior, 1, and Omar, six months. “I like to call myself a super daddy,’’ he jokes. “My kids are half-Australian and half-French. My wife and kids are my biggest source of motivation. I’ll do anything for my tribe.’’
The 31-year-old has been boxing for more than 20 years, winning titles in France, but it was not until he came to Australia and won the national amateur title in 2011, that he turned professional. “I learnt to box because at school, sometimes things could be rough, and I needed to learn how to protect myself. My mum raised me on her own, so I was the man of the house and I knew I needed to be able to protect myself and to protect my family.” When not training, Faris works as a personal trainer and boxing coach at Kangaroo Point’s FitazFK Gym. “I’m addicted to boxing and I like to share my passion.” FIONA PURDON

Born to be my baby After years of heartbreak, PR queen Fleur Madden has realised her dream of motherhood with baby Josiah Hannah Davies
S
eeing her cuddle little Josiah, it’s hard to imagine that Fleur Madden almost didn’t get the chance to be a mother. The cherubic five-month-old, happily blowing bubbles while perched on his mum’s hip, is testament to Fleur’s incredible strength and determination to have a child in the face of terrible odds. Suffering miscarriage after miscarriage took its toll on the 38-year-old PR queen, but rather than sit back and wait to lose another baby, she took matters into her own hands. Fleur, who is CEO of Brisbane’s award-winning Red Republic PR company with clients including Myer, Lorna Jane, Sass & Bide and Westfield, fell pregnant for the first time with her second husband, Zimbabwe-born accountant Jimmy Gwisai, 41, in August 2015. Sadly, she lost the baby before the 12-week mark. Initially putting their faith in doctors, the pair tried again
and again – sometimes using IVF and conceiving naturally at other times. Each time it wasn’t to be, though, and sadly Fleur and Jimmy suffered through a further three miscarriages. “We were averaging two pregnancies a year,” Fleur explains. “Sometimes I don’t know how I did it and I can’t say I was positive the whole time, but you work with the hand you’re dealt. I never allowed my mind to go to a place where it wasn’t going to happen. “I guess our issue has never been conceiving a baby – it was maintaining a pregnancy. Our babies were tested and they were never able to find anything wrong with them, so at that point we had to look at ourselves.” Looking back on her journey, Fleur says she wants to encourage other women struggling to have a baby not to give up. Having also tried unsuccessfully for a child in her
first marriage 10 years ago, she came close to adopting a little boy from South Korea. but even that slipped through her fingers when she split from her husband and was told at that time single women couldn’t adopt. “My message is that, really, you have to keep getting back in the ring and fighting when it’s fertility. You really do have to take matters into your own hands in terms of making sure you’ve done everything you can do.” After her fourth miscarriage, Fleur started researching what could be wrong, which led her to discover various blood-clotting conditions that can cause miscarriage. “When I told the doctor I wanted tests done for bloodclotting problems, I was literally told you won’t have it – you’d be one in a million. And I said to him, I’m always the one in a million so I want the testing done.” Although her test came back negative, Fleur decided to

COVER STORY
My message is that, really, you have to keep getting back in the ring and fighting when it’s fertility … making sure you’ve done everything you can do have further grades of testing done in the UK at London’s Zita West Clinic, which specialises in fertility and specifically thrombophilia (blood-clotting conditions). When Jimmy’s work took him to the UK, she went with him and visited the specialist centre, where more involved tests were carried out. Doctors then confirmed what Fleur had suspected and put her on a treatment plan to undertake if she fell pregnant again. At that point, the couple, who live at Bulimba in Brisbane’s southeast, had decided to take a break and focus on their upcoming wedding in November 2017. The couple, together since 2013 after being set up on a blind date by mutual friends, tied the knot at Fleur’s brother’s property at Gumdale in Brisbane’s east. But in an unexpected twist, Fleur discovered she was pregnant before walking down the aisle. “My dress was designed by London designer Jenny Packham, and I was told it was not the dress to wear if I intended to be pregnant. I said the chances of that were very slim,” Fleur laughs. “The day Jimmy picked my dress up, we found out I was pregnant with Josiah. By some blessing they accidentally gave him a dress a size too big. Someone was smiling down on me. “We had a beautiful marquee wedding. It was an intimate wedding with only 80 people, many of whom flew in from around the world. Having Josiah in attendance on the day made it even more joyful and special. I honestly felt all my dreams were coming true that day.” Wedding plans aside, Fleur remained terrified that she would miscarry again, but was fortunate enough to find a doctor to treat her in Brisbane. She was put on a course of treatment to maintain the pregnancy – steroids and injections to thin the blood. Fleur also endured extreme morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum) and gestational diabetes.

COVER STORY
FROM PREVIOUS PAGE It was an anxious time. “Until he was born I was nervous and on edge constantly,” she says. “I was constantly ill, worried I was going to lose my baby. For us, pregnancy was about survival on every level – for me, for the baby.” Finally, on May 3, 2018, baby Josiah arrived via caesarean section at Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Private Hospital. “There were tears. When (Josiah) first came out, Jimmy said, ‘He looks just like you’, and then I saw him and said, ‘He does not; he looks just like you’. African genes are strong, I think.” Fleur, who started her career as a journalist at The Sunday Mail before venturing into public relations, says being a career woman influenced her decision to push for testing. “I’m very used to making stuff happen professionally and the thing with fertility is it’s so out of your control. It was a tough pregnancy, a tough conception, but if I hadn’t taken it upon myself to make sure that we had all the testing we needed to have done and really pushed all of the doctors that we saw, we wouldn’t have ended up with a baby.” She credits her husband for giving her the strength to carry on. “Jimmy was amazing. He’s a very solid and calm person. When you’re faced with such enormous challenges, it’s either going to bring you closer together or further apart, and we really proved how strong we were.”
As a CEO, Fleur is never completely on maternity leave, and Josiah was lucky enough to attend his first management meeting at just four weeks old. “I’m excited about the next chapter as a mum and a businesswoman; however, I know the struggle is real.
Faced with such enormous challenges, it’s either going to bring you closer together or further apart “Since I’ve become a mum, I am certainly more selective with where I focus my energies work wise and what projects I take on.” The couple aren’t sure if they will have more children, but for Fleur pregnancy is no longer something she can’t do. “I think I could do it again because Josiah is such a delight and it was all worth it. But in saying that, I am 38, so if this is it and Josiah is what we have, we are immeasurably blessed. “We feel so much gratitude and so blessed, and nothing is too much trouble. “We both get up in the middle of the night, we both race to him for everything because we know we may never have had him.” THREE’S COMPANY ... TRAILBLAZER
Up and away With cheeky inflated messages designed to get a laugh, Kady Capewell’s gift balloons have seriously good intent KADY CAPEWELL, 31 FOUNDER, FANCY SCHMANCY BALLOON CO WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU? We are continually working on new ranges and greetings for our boxed balloons. And for the installation events side of the business, we’ve even started to book Christmas parties. Eek. WHY BALLOONS? I love that balloons can be gifted to everyone. I always struggled with gifts for the males in my life and a balloon can definitely fill that gap. The option of creating a custom message can also help set the tone for the gift. WHERE DID THE IDEA SPRING FROM? It was always something I wanted to do but didn’t have the time. While on maternity leave (with daughter Ace, now 19 months), – I finally started to bring my ideas
V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
together. I was diagnosed with postnatal depression and my creative brain struggled with mummy duties. Each day I took a few minutes to research products, create my branding and order supplies until I was ready to hit go. This is the reasoning behind donating $2 a box to PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia). WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FUNNIER BALLOON MESSAGES? “My thoughts are with your lady parts.” After having Ace and experiencing child birth – ouch. Mumma needs some credit! The “I’m so glad I got drunk and went home with you” balloon is popular for Valentine’s Day. And “Look who’s all grown up and ready for a colonoscopy” – this was a custom order we loved so much we asked to add it to the range. YOUR MOST MEMORABLE DELIVERY? My favourite so far has been to our oldest recipient, who was 98. He was having
surgery in Toowoomba, so I had my mum and sister deliver it. He wasn’t able to get up from bed so they opened it for him. “You bloody legend” popped out of the box and gave him the best giggle. Delivering balloons to people like him, or an “Adios cancer”, always gets you with the feels. WHAT WAS YOUR ‘AHA’ MOMENT? I’ve been a jack of all trades – a beauty therapist, a makeup artist and a graphic designer. As a designer, I think the ‘aha’ moment was finding a way of putting my handwriting on something that
wasn’t another greeting card, wall print or invitation. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU? People who are willing to take a risk. In a world driven by money, so many amazing ideas never come to fruition. I took on Fancy full time within six months and now in a few weeks my husband leaves his full-time job to grow this business. It’s a huge risk, but we have found something we love enough to take the gamble. fancyschmancy.com.au

Smashing plates Kingscliff’s Taverna mixes Greek eats with a global drinks list RESTAURANT Tony Harper The collective allure of coastal, northern New South Wales and its restaurants just keeps on keeping on. Sometime early last year, Taverna added its Greek-inspired, not-quite-oceanfront experience to Kingscliff’s already vibrant scene. It looks the part from the outside – an old, vaguely deco-style stone and stucco building, suitably white with pale blue trim; bar to one side, restaurant to the other. A road, park and line of trees separate Taverna from the beach, but that’s about it. The view is lovely, even if there are more dramatically oceanfront places to be found. Inside is even better – a gorgeously ramshackle beach cottage meets restaurant, lots of white, lots of wood, bentwood chairs. Plus you get tablecloths, linen napkins and decent stemware. It’s beachy-casual with manners. If you are a gin lover you’ll have a heap of fun with the drinks list – there are plenty on offer from all parts of the globe, with a handful of rather thoughtful, mixed versions. Plus cocktails, beers (some craft, a couple of Greek, a couple of mainstream) and a small but tailored collection of wines. Of those, there are a handful of Greeks (good wines, not retsina) then mostly Australian and New Zealand labels, with the occasional French and Austrian thrown into the mix. It’s keenly priced. The Taverna kitchen has a light touch, melding Greek inspiration with loads of fresh, when possible local, produce and a dose of imagination. Halloumi, for example, is sourced from Byron Bay and comes as a

solid rectangle half an inch thick, drizzled with honey and grilled ($13): it’s light, soft and tasty. And ‘Greek Style’ tartare ($19) – delightful and traditionally plated with crostini and a raw egg yolk. An abundance of vegetables is used creatively: cauliflower and pea falafel with raw broccoli tabouli and fermented cabbage ($19.50); beetroot polenta, broadbean and mint hummus ($17); a simple, elegant dish of whole truss tomatoes with feta and garlic ($10); and plenty more.
Of the heartier meat dishes, poached chicken breast is the killer ($32.50). The meat, perfectly poached, sits in a pool of avgolemono (lemon and egg soup) with native citrus and lemon myrtle woven in. A sprinkling of edible petals dresses it up. There’s also a decent lamb shank with pickled zucchini and smoked yoghurt ($40). It doesn’t quite reach the sticky, melted sinew, collapse-with-the-touch-of-a-fork kind of state that can make shanks wonderful, but it’s still good.

Three clever desserts ($18.50 each, like dark chocolate pot with berries and Persian floss, or burnt honey brulee, figs, macadamia and saffron biscotti), plus cheese and a sorbet trio round out the menu. There’s plenty to like about Taverna in terms of both food and the stuff beyond. Much of its allure lies with the elegantly rustic surrounds: they raise expectations and make you want to attempt a foreign gin and immerse yourself in a Kingscliff-meetsSantorini dining experience.

RECIPE
Bright bite A side salad can be so much more than a humble table filler, says Jamie Oliver Years ago, when I first learnt to appreciate the way Italians use fruit in salads, it changed my concept of a salad for good. It took it from a wimpy side dish to a true gastronomic experience. This recipe is about celebrating textures and brightness, and I think you’ll love it. You could also swap in other seasonal stone fruit.
GRILLED APRICOT SALAD, FLOWERING THYME, MOZZARELLA, PINK PEPPERCORNS & PROSCIUTTO INGREDIENTS 8 ripe apricots 8 sprigs of fresh thyme, ideally the flowering kind olive oil 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar extra virgin olive oil 1 big pinch of pink peppercorns
½ a red onion 2 large handfuls of salad leaves, such as escarole, Castelfranco, wild rocket 4 slices of higher welfare prosciutto 125g ball of mozzarella cheese zest of 1 lemon
METHOD Put a griddle pan on a high heat. Halve and destone the apricots then, on a platter, toss with half the thyme sprigs and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Place the dressed fruit cut side down on the hot griddle for 6 minutes, or until charred and caramelised, turning halfway. Meanwhile, pour the vinegar on to the platter with 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Crush and crumble the pink peppercorns over the platter, then peel, very finely slice and sprinkle over the onion, giving it a little mix in the dressing to lightly pickle it. Pick through your salad leaves, tearing or slicing the larger ones. Add to the platter and gently toss together, then season to perfection. Tear the prosciutto and drape it over in waves. Gently tear open the mozzarella, season with sea salt, black pepper, a fine grating of lemon zest and a few drips of extra virgin olive oil, then tear over the salad. Place your grilled apricots in and around the salad, sprinkling over any crispy thyme leaves and the remaining leaves and flowers. Drizzle with a tiny bit more extra virgin olive oil, then serve. British fashion icon Vivienne Westwood proves to be a reluctant interview subject, with director Lorna Tucker tackling her leading lady’s prickly eccentricity head on in the opening sequence of this off-the-hanger documentary. Sitting in a plush velvet chair, clad simply in black, an exasperated Westwood admonishes Tucker for her interruptions. In a series of jump-cut vignettes that get the film off to a cracking start, Westwood dismisses questions about her childhood as “boring”. She “can’t be bothered” talking about the Sex Pistols, either. What follows is a conventional biography that interweaves interviews and archival material with contemporary behindthe-scenes footage. Still, Westwood is too radical a character for Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist to be without interest. She and Malcolm McLaren moved into a council flat in Clapham in the late ’60s, where they had a son, Joe Corre. Universally recognised as one of the architects of ’70s punk fashion, Westwood designed clothes for the couple’s boutique in Kings Rd, as well as McLaren’s band, the Sex Pistols. Westwood’s much-younger second husband, Andreas Kronthaler, is the film’s most expansive interviewee. Candid behind-the-scenes footage shows them working closely together. But Westwood proves an elusive subject and this documentary provides few real insights. Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist confirms that age has not mellowed the punk couturier. At 77, Westwood is still a rebel through and through. VICKY ROACH

Leap of faith A thriller that highlights Queensland’s coral reefs combines virtual reality with live performance Frogman is not like any show Georgina Strawson has ever featured in and it will be a deep dive for audiences, too. The coming-of-age thriller is set on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef, and by strapping on a pair of virtual reality goggles, audiences will be right there with the fish. By fusing a live solo performance by Georgina with the 360-degree virtual reality film, Frogman blurs the line between reality and fiction, the physical and the virtual. “This is a hybrid form of entertainment for people who like film and theatre,” she says. “It’s a new experience. It’s quite televisual, dramatic and you feel so much intimacy, which helps you get absorbed in the story. The film is totally immersive so you feel like you are diving in the coral, rather than observing it. When you look up, you might see the top of the ocean or you might see other swimmers.’’ Developed by British theatre company curious directive, Frogman will be featured as part of the Brisbane International Film Festival at Brisbane Powerhouse.
16 BRISBANE NEWS October 17-23, 2018
“The initial thread of the idea started in Brisbane with the issue of coral and climate change,” Georgina says. “It is a tribute to the coral because we are not sure how much longer they will survive. “It’s lovely to be bringing the film home. I hope the audiences in Brisbane like it as much as the audiences in the UK.” Georgina plays Queensland coral scientist Meera (complete with a Queensland twang), who is at the centre of a cold case involving the disappearance in 1995 of school friend Ashleigh, when Meera was 11 years old. The virtual reality film features flashbacks of a young Meera and her friends, and covers crucial events from the past. The children are played by four Brisbane actors. “In the film you see what happened when the incident occurred and then you meet the older version of Meera,’’ she says. The London-based actor is best known for her role as Rosamund Calendar in the BBC children’s TV show Hetty Feather.
DEEP DIVE … Georgina Strawson (below) will perform in Frogman. “I love acting because I love becoming someone else; I love learning about history. “From doing Frogman I’ve learnt so much about the biogenetics of new corals and how scientists are saving them.’’ Georgina’s top travel wish in Australia is to fly over the Great Barrier Reef. “I’m desperate to see the reef and I want to fly over the Whitsundays in a Sierra plane.’’ FIONA PURDON Frogman, at Brisbane International Film Festival, Oct 17-21, Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm, ph: 3358 8600. brisbanepowerhouse.org

BOOKS
Royal affairs Susanna de Vries reveals new secrets about Princess Diana in her latest book about Britain’s House of Windsor Fiona Purdon Age has not wearied irrepressible author Susanna de Vries. At 82, she has just released her latest book, Royal Marriages: Diana, Camilla, Kate & Meghan and the Princesses Who Did Not Live Happily Ever After ($39.95, Pirgos Press). It’s a companion piece to Susanna’s Royal Mistresses (2012) and the 20th book by the Chapel Hill resident who is now busy writing her memoir. “I’ve had a colourful life,” she says. “Writing now for me is a comfort, and I’m getting a great comfort from writing my memoir.” English-born Susanna has drawn on information, especially about Princess Diana, from wellconnected friends from her years attending the prestigious St George’s School in Ascot,
England. Susanna was a boarder at St George’s after her Kent family home was bombed during World War II, and her family lived in an Ascot hotel for four years. Susanna also gained invaluable insights about Diana’s anxiety, depression and bulimia nervosa from colleagues of her first husband Dr Larry Evans, a University of Queensland professor of psychiatry. Susanna and Larry moved to Queensland in 1975 for career opportunities. “I knew a lot about Diana’s bulimia ... Before I shuffle off I feel a lot of things ought to be said,’’ she says. “People love reading about Diana. Through school friends I also became friends with Lady Elsa Bowker, who was a confidante of Princess Diana.’’ Susanna, who has an OAM for services to literature, began Royal
Marriages four years ago as a panacea for the grief she experienced while nursing her beloved second husband, Brisbane architect Jake de Vries, who died of bone marrow cancer in 2015. They were married for 30 years. “Jake believed that creativity was the most important thing in the world. He designed all my books and covers.’’ A trained linguist, Susanna met Jake in 1984 before embarking on her writing career in 1987. “I was thought odd because I wanted to go to university,” she says. “In those days most women were supposed to be debutantes and we were to dance our way to marrying eligible men.’’ Susanna will speak at Chermside (Nov 5) and Kenmore (Nov 30) libraries. BREAST IMAGING: WHY QUALITY MATTERS
PRISCILLA OPENING NIGHT South Brisbane
“Did you know that approximately 1 in 8 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime?“
Divas, drag queens and theatre lovers in bold and bright fashions sashayed the pink carpet at the opening night of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical. Super-sized queens in Lycra and elaborate floral headdresses gave crowds a glimpse of the extravagant costumes that would hit the QPAC stage. The iconic musical, based on Oscarwinning film Priscilla, runs until Nov 4.
“I know I need a mammogram but does it really matter where you go? I thought all mammograms are the same?” No – breast imaging is a subspecialty in radiology and some mammograms are better than others. difw has been the private breast imaging provider of choice in Brisbane since 1998, under the care of Dr Paula Sivyer, our founding radiologist. Dr Sivyer’s reputation in breast imaging is unsurpassed in Queensland and she has trained a team of dedicated imaging professionals who share her passion for providing breast imaging that is a cut above the industry standard. Our better breast imaging experience includes: • no waiting list • same day results • 3D mammography available • all referrals accepted • ave appointment time 1.5 to 2 hours (imaging only, assumes no biopsy).
We compare imaging year after year, thanks to our large digital data archive, so you know the subtlest changes in breast tissue are logged and assessed. We provide results on the day, so you don’t have to worry.

THE 5-STEP BREAST CHECK Dr Paula Sivyer, consultant radiologist at Brisbane medical imaging clinic difw, offers these tips: 1. Examine your breasts once a month, five to seven days after the start of your period. 2. Lie down and with your right hand examine your left breast. 3. Take your left arm behind your head, rolling your body towards the right to centre the nipple. 4. While keeping your four fingers flat, gently feel all around the breast and up into the armpit. Repeat on the other side. 5. Stand facing a mirror and raise both hands above your head, then place your hands on hips. Look at both the nipples and the skin for symmetry in movement and appearance.

From ex-beauty editor to product development After four and a half years in product development, Zoë Foster Blake unveiled her latest project earlier this month — Zincredible. A lightweight daily moisturiser with antioxidants and broad spectrum mineral SPF 15, Zincredible is the newest arsenal to join her hugely-popular beauty brand GoTo’s peachy-packaged line-up. An ex-beauty editor, Zoë says years of trialling SPF moisturisers but finding that they were often accompanied by white cast, greasiness, thickness and a “gross after-feel” is what led her to create Zincredible. “I set out to make a genuinely clean daily moisturiser with physical SPF that I’d want to use every single day,” Zoë says. “It needed to look and feel as good as the synthetic, chemical SPF moisturisers people are used to, but be full of Zinc Oxide, and fulfil Go-To’s ludicrously high standards of plant-based, clean, syntheticfree, skin-friendly formulas. “It was a huge challenge, but what we’ve created is very special: a pure, mineral moisturiser with broad spectrum UV protection that sinks in immediately, won’t clog pores, looks incredible under
makeup, and keeps the skin protected and healthy, now and in 20 years.” Containing all of the good stuff, including Zinc Oxide, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and replenishing botanical oils, Zincredible is free from chemical UV filters, silicones, parabens, PEGs, sulfates, GMOs, mineral oils, petrolatum and synthetic colours. The new addition comes off the back of Go-To’s launch in Sephora stores across the US. Zincredible is available exclusively from gotoskincare.com

Perfect world Luxury house builder Rob Gray turned into his own worst client in creating his ideal family home Tonya Turner
B
risbane builder Rob Gray is no stranger to luxury homes. His company, Graya Construction, has built swanky residences for clients including Brisbane Broncos captain Darius Boyd, former Wallabies captain Stephen Moore, and star couple model Laura Dundovic and Queensland Reds player Quade Cooper since bursting onto the property scene five years ago. But Rob, 29, describes building a family house in Paddington for himself and wife Meghan Gray, 26, as 10 times harder than anything he’s ever worked on. “I was so fussy with every detail. I turned into that horror client,” he says. “I wanted everything to be different to what we had built before, so dealing with a lot of details and finishes for the first time made it quite tricky.” Living in the original cottage while renovating also presented some challenges. “Every routine we had in our lives had stopped. All our clothes and belongings were full of dust and spread across five different locations. We were both fairly rundown by the end,” Meghan says. It was a huge relief when two years after purchasing the property in May 2016, their new home was complete. “The first month felt like we were in a hotel and then it sunk in. We are over the moon how lucky we are to live in such an amazing home,” Meghan says. Named The Russet House for its reddish-purple and copper tones, the four-level home designed by architect Tim Stewart includes five bedrooms, four bathrooms, multiple living areas, butler’s pantry, fireplace and sauna.
Concrete, brick, copper and steel materials dominate and, in hindsight, Rob and Meghan wish they had played up those textures even more. “We have always loved the rustic industrial look and wanted to go a lot harder towards that style; however, we still wanted the luxury look for resale one day,” Meghan says. Built for entertaining, the home includes a rooftop viewing terrace where they’ve thrown a few shindigs, a loft-style mezzanine that overlooks the open-plan kitchen and living areas, and the backyard with its designer pool. Rob broke his number one rule when designing houses to never put a master bedroom on the ground level. Living on the site for a year before renovations started, however, gave him a new perspective. By placing the living areas on the upper level opening on to the large deck, they were able to capture beautiful views of the city through the treetops and nestle their master bedroom away in a quiet corner of the house overlooking the pool. A favourite feature is the curved walls in the hallways and rumpus room that soften the transition between spaces. CSR Gyprock plasterboard products were used for acoustics, durability and fire-retardant performance. Rob loves that their “dark, architectural, sharp and pointy” house stands out against the others in the street. Although five bedrooms is more than they need right now, they hope to start filling them soon. “We have a few spare rooms at the moment and that’s the way we wanted it, as we are planning to add to the family shortly,” Meghan says.

LAST WORD
Phil Brown When I feel it’s time for people to leave, I go into the bedroom and put the dressing gown on over my clothes. Most people seem to get the message We’ve been going through our wardrobes recently doing a spring clean. Which has just proved to me that we have more clothes than we need. But how to decide what to throw out? I vacillated quite a bit with certain items. I have a purple jumper I never wear. I held it up to my wife and said, “Have you ever seen me wearing this?” She shook her head. So out it went. I mean, if you haven’t worn something in the past couple of years, you really don’t need it. There was an old sweatshirt, too, that I kind of liked but I have only worn once in the past year, and that was to bed on a very cold evening. So it went in the Vinnies bag, too. This is liberating stuff, right? It’s quite relaxing to just put on some music, open the cupboards and the drawers, and start rummaging. I could really hone my wardrobe down much further if I tried because as far as I’m concerned, a bloke doesn’t

need that much. I could get through most of my life wearing my black slacks, black Lacoste polo shirt and a camel-coloured or light blue sports jacket. Having good sports jackets to mix and match is de rigueur, I feel. And when you get a good one, hold on to it. As much as I like chucking out stuff, there are some things I simply cannot part with. Like my black merino wool turtlenecks. I had two of them and have worn them these past 10 winters and they have served me well. But one of them had worn paper thin and my elbow was trying to get out through an increasingly large hole that was beyond darning. So out it went recently, with a few sniffles. It was an emotional moment. But I still have one. For now. My favourite sports jacket is now 20 years old and I simply cannot bear to part with it. I have had it relined and mended, and have had new buttons
sewn on. It’s Italian and features a houndstooth pattern and I have worn it year in, year out. Has anyone noticed? Never mind. I love it. My tartan dressing gown is even older. I bought it at David Jones in Melbourne in 1993 and it gets me through winter quite nicely and is still in remarkably good shape. I would wear it to work if I could. It comes in handy whenever we have gatherings at home, which is, thankfully, not that often. What happens is that when I feel it’s time for people to leave, I go into the bedroom and put the dressing gown on over my clothes and reappear. Most people seem to get the message. If they haven’t quite twigged, I go into the bathroom and then reappear brushing my teeth, as if to say: Are you people leaving now or what? I then farewell them with my standard line. “Thanks for coming ... and thanks for going.”

Innovative approach This two-storey house has been innovatively designed to combine a Japanese Minka house style with contemporary luxuries. The outdoor and indoor living environments pair with rich natural finishes. A gardened stone pathway precedes the ground-floor entry, which reveals exposed concrete floors and ceilings, neutral tones, sliding glass walls and internal gardens interspersed throughout. A study sits next to a laundry and powder room, while the nearby double garage has a clothes line, storage area and workshop. The central living room is framed by two outdoor patios and connects seamlessly to the dining room and a kitchen with Miele appliances, integrated Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, stone benchtops, ample cabinetry and a kitchen island. Outside, a patio overlooks established gardens and pool. A floating staircase winds upstairs over an internal garden, leading to the four bedrooms on the first floor, which are connected by a timber-floored breezeway with sliding glass doors to a balcony. Three
bedrooms feature built-in wardrobes and balconies. They share a modern bathroom with open rain shower and freestanding bath. A rumpus room with street-facing balcony also sits at this end. The main bedroom resides at the other end, complete with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, private balcony, two built-in wardrobes, carpet and adjoining multipurpose room. The ensuite has a double vanity, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and a rain shower.

Natural beauty A blend of mid-century architecture and contemporary finishes contribute to this property’s charm and distinctiveness. Built in 1971, the split-level family house has been lived in and loved by three generations, after the eldest of five children, Lisa Harkin, purchased the property from her parents with her husband Shane and together raised their own four children. “There’s been a lot of love in this home,” Lisa says. “We’ve often likened it to The Brady Bunch house; it’s where we made sandpits and bush cubbies, where we learned to ride motor bikes and cook and paint…it has seen five generations of family all sitting under one roof – it’s full of fond memories.” The couple have modernised the house over the last 20 years, ripping up oncefashionable shaggy carpets to reveal beautiful hardwood floors, swapping wallpaper for pristine white walls, and renovating the kitchen and bathrooms. Light-filled living and meals areas in the property feature soaring ceilings and exposed white brick walls, while glass
doors open to a covered deck overlooking lush bushland. There’s an abundance of wildlife in the area, including rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras and king parrots. The kitchen boasts a Calcutta marble island breakfast bar opposite an integrated stainless steel benchtop. Also on the upper level are a study, nursery, formal lounge room, and the main bedroom which has an ensuite and a walkin wardrobe.
