This week... The moment we clapped eyes on Courtney Brims’ quirky Mariner (below), she had our attention. The Samford-raised artist specialises in animals in their natural habitat and her enchanting illustrations – often with an underlying conservation message – bring to mind the whimsical works of Beatrix Potter. Writer Andrea Ripper visited Courtney, and her beloved ragdoll cat Dolly Parton, at her Everton Hills studio to learn more about her inspiration, process and high-profile collaborations (P8). Courtney’s Mariner can be seen at Edison Lane, city, as part of the Women’s Work exhibition until Dec 1.

LIFE
Alicia Pyke So I’ve been thinking about what makes some teachers extra special. And what makes us want to work harder to earn their acclaim How do you like your teacher, I asked my eight-year-old niece as we walked around Queensland Museum together. Year 2 teachers are usually pretty special but I wasn’t expecting the outpouring of pure love Eve has for hers. Among this teacher’s many excellent qualities is “always being nice and never being mean”. She’s also very encouraging of Eve and recently praised the way she pays attention in class and shows kindness to other students. Her positive feedback made such an impact, Eve glowed with happiness as she told me.
I know exactly how she feels. I can still remember early primary school teachers encouraging me to practise my handwriting and sound out words as I read. Not only did they help in developing skills I use daily, they taught me I can learn anything – the most valuable lesson of all. Turns out, wanting to make our teachers proud never gets old. Studying at university again has confirmed I’m still as much of a girly swot as ever. Put me in a classroom and my inner Lisa Simpson surfaces: Is there any extra homework this weekend, please Miss? These nerdy tendencies combined with being a lifelong approval seeker (praise me,
please, for working this out), means I thrive on teacher encouragement, even after two decades in the workforce. So I’ve been thinking about what makes some teachers extra special. And what makes us want to work harder to earn their acclaim. You’ve probably already guessed it’s not that different to what my little niece said. Top of the list is the feeling you’re being taught by someone who absolutely loves what they do: someone who knows their stuff and lives to share it with others. That alone can be enough to make us fall in love with learning at any age. Next is the feeling that a teacher notices
you. They see your efforts and want you to do well at whatever you try. As for never being mean, there’s something to Eve’s insights here, too. As soon as a uni lecturer raises their voice in frustration – yes it occasionally happens at uni and it’s kind of shocking – part of me switches off. I want to line my eyes with messy black eyeliner and chew gum loudly in an act of classic teen rebellion. So yes, Eve, I agree completely. Your teacher does sound wonderful. Be sure to tell her that and keep making her proud as you continue to do well in your lifetime of learning ahead.

Prince of polo Young, handsome and supremely talented – Hawaii’s Nano Gracida is the perfect ambassador for this noble sport Hannah Davies
H
e’s the dashing young polo player heading to Brisbane for the first time. But when Mariano Gracida takes to the field at this year’s Land Rover Polo in the City, he will only have eyes for the horses. The eligible bachelor, who goes by the nickname “Nano”, is being billed as the star attraction at this month’s glamorous event – leading Team Hawaii against the Aussies – and he is keen to make his mark Down Under. “Everybody I’ve met from Australia is extremely friendly, and I can’t wait to check out the wildlife and the beaches,” he tells Brisbane News. “I’m hoping to see as much as I can and I’m up for anything … I’ve always wanted to see a koala bear.” Nano carries the proud heritage of four generations of champion polo players. He is the youngest son of the late Carlos Gracida, the Mexican-born polo legend and one of the most celebrated players in the history of the sport. Carlos played alongside the Prince of Wales and coached Princes William and Harry, but his vision was to make the sport accessible to everyone. Indeed when he played for Kerry Packer’s Ellerston team, the two bonded over a shared vision of making polo as accessible as cricket or football. Today Nano is putting his own stamp on the sport – winning several 20-goal tournaments, including the East Coast Open, the Ylsikar Cup and the Herbie Pennel Cup – and like his father, wants everyone to be able to enjoy polo. “We want to reach out to a new audience to ring a bell that polo is a welcoming sport,” he says. “Polo is the oldest sport in the world and I believe it’s lasted because of the passion humans have with horses. They are amazing creatures that once you get involved with them there might be a possibility that you can’t get away from them. “Anytime I take a break from polo or riding I start to feel anxious thinking about how long I have to wait to get back in the saddle. It’s truly amazing everything that comes with the sport. It’s a lifestyle; that’s why I think it’s lasted for so long.” The 26-year-old heart-throb, who has V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

been riding since the age of five, is taking the family legacy a step further by diversifying the Gracida name into a range of wines that exemplify the polo lifestyle and honours four generations of horsemen. “I started the wine label Gracida with my brother Carlitos. We chose to source wine
out of a great vineyard from La Mancha region in Spain, and have started with three different kinds of wines – a chardonnay, gran reserva and a great frizzante rosé.” In his spare time, Nano, who lives in Hawaii, enjoys surfing, skateboarding, going to the movies and live music events
and “trying to cook and copy the cooking channels at home”. But his main focus is always the horses. “Everything is about the horses and being a good horseman. My father was an ultimate professional and an excellent horseman. He was professional in everything he did, taking his job seriously. “If we have the horses going well, if we keep our composure on and off the field, act like gentlemen, keep healthy, progress forward, everything will follow.” Land Rover Polo in the City, Nov 23, Dorrington Park, Ashgrove, marquee packages from $86 pp. polointhecity.com For fashions in the field inspiration, see P20.

Call of the wild Artist Courtney Brims is attracting a global following with her heartwarming pictures of furry creatures Andrea Ripper
W
hen Courtney Brims was a girl growing up on acreage at Samford, she was interested in only three career paths: art, zoology or mowing grass. The arrival of the family’s errant pet cow, Zebedee – a Santa Gertrudis from St George – cut short her lawn-mowing aspirations, but Courtney has gone on to create her own signature blend of the first two careers as an international artist known for her intricate natural history illustrations with a gothic twist, and commercial commissions ranging from Bavarian Bier Cafe pin-up girls to fabric designs for high fashion label Zimmermann. An unassuming but wildly talented artist, Courtney, 34, is something of a modern-day Beatrix Potter, inspired by her love of animals and the childhood freedom she and her elder sister Stephanie enjoyed in roaming the countryside and swimming in the rainforested creek on the Samford property where their parents still live. “Growing up in a place so rich with wildlife was a constant source of inspiration. There were always snakes, frogs, turtles, platypuses, baby hares and all kinds of native birds,” Courtney says.

Courtney loved drawing, encouraged by her mother, who worked as a graphic designer at QUT, and her father, a chemical engineer who cultivated a vegie patch and would show her plants and animals around their property. Artists and authors such as Beatrix Potter, Jeannie Baker, Graeme Base and Roald Dahl also inspired her. “It was always my dream to be an artist but I think as I got older, it seemed to be more of a fantasy than something I could make a career out of,” Courtney says. Now she has realised that dream, working from a leafy townhouse studio at Everton Hills on Brisbane’s outskirts
where her artist’s assistant and muse, Dolly the ragdoll cat, rules the roost with a swish of her tail and swipe of her paws. Courtney’s works have hung in New York and London galleries, graced Zimmermann’s catwalks and likely enlivened the walls of many an English manor thanks to her designs for British wallpaper company Mineheart. She has just shown her work at Talon Gallery in Portland, USA, will be part of a group show, Ritual, at New York’s Haven Gallery (Dec 14-Jan 12), and is illustrating an older-children’s picture book. “The book is so bizarre and wonderful and it’s been a joy bringing the story to life,” she
says. Inspired by natural history and scientific illustrations, fairy tales and fantasy films such as Labyrinth and Willow, Courtney uses coloured pencil to draw works so detailed it’s hard to believe they were created by a human hand. “My ideas often come to me while I’m daydreaming,” she says. “When I let my mind wander I’m not trying so hard and there’s no pressure. It’s in those moments where there aren’t any restrictions and I’m able to let loose and have fun with the process of creating.” Many of her works have a gothic twist, revolving around the theme of predator and prey, often with an unsettling element
akin to the menace of Mr McGregor lurking by the lettuce patch, ready to make a meal of Peter Rabbit in Beatrix Potter’s classic children’s stories. “I’ve always had a strong interest in the behaviour of animals, the connection they have with the environment and their relationship with humanity. “I like to express nature as complex, intelligent and sometimes brutal rather than something that is simply delicate and beautiful that can be tamed and confined,” Courtney says. Her imagination has given rise to the CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

The gallery had the actual liveaction dog models from the film on display
and people were invited to bring their dogs along to the opening, Courtney says. Other projects have included a series of ’50s-style pin-up girls for Bavarian Bier Cafe, Brancott Estate wine labels, T-shirt designs for surf and skate label Element, and branding for Abbott’s Village Bakery. “I enjoy working on the commercial illustrations because they’re often fun and different to anything I usually create, she says. “It’s nice having that diversity and balance. So how did the hockey-playing, former St Margaret’s student come to make a career as an artist-illustrator whose works are now shown the world over? finishing school, Courtney did a degree in Built Environment at QUT and worked as an interior designer but didn’t really enjoy it. “So I decided to stop making excuses and start doing what made me happy and see where it could lead, she says. “I decided, ‘I think I’m just going to draw’, and my parents had a minor freakout because Mum, being a graphic designer, said, ‘I know you’re good at it but I’m not sure how it’s going to work’ – this was also before social media, so there was no real way of connecting with people around the world. She searched for art competitions to make her name known, and found one run
through surf and skate magazine, Monster Children, with a two-week solo show at a gallery in Surry Hills, Sydney, as the prize. She entered and won, and the show brought her work to the attention of a vast network, including Element. “I got jobs through there and it just took off, says the self-taught artist. “I pinch myself sometimes. If I hadn’t been looking at that point I never would have seen the ad and the rest wouldn’t have happened. Now a Sydney agency, The Drawing Arm, secures her commercial work. She hand-draws all her illustrations, which can take up to three weeks each to complete. “You can’t rush it. There’s no way of short-cutting it. I just prefer to do it hand-drawn and be in total control of it and I think it’s nice in this day and age that something is still from our hands and not digitalised in any way. While her earlier illustrations often featured North American animals such as deer and squirrels, her current artworks revolve around endangered Australian species. She sees each artwork as an “ideal little paradise that highlights the beauty of wildlife and the need to conserve it. “I tend to do a lot of research into the subjects I’m drawing, looking at the specific environment an animal lives in, the types of plants that grow there, the insects that visit those plants and whether there are any threats present. After coming up with a concept, she gathers reference material such as photos, and leaves, flowers and even animal bones she finds while out walking in the bush. “It’s not uncommon for me to go for a walk and come home with pockets full of rocks, dead butterflies, sticks and even dead birds, she says, as the shoebox collections of bones, butterflies and feathers in her townhouse attest. “When you think of endangered animals of Australia, you think of the koala, and you don’t think of all these other mammals and birds that people aren’t really aware of. So sadly there’s a lot of choice. I’ve done maybe 10 or so mammals and birds, but there’s still so many I’d love to touch on and draw. courtneybrims.com

TRAILBLAZER
Slice of heaven Delivered with a smile, Sarah-Jane’s cakes are made to delight SARAH-JANE WICKS, 42 Happy Cake Day owner What’s new with you? I recently launched a daily cake delivery service, Happy Cake Day. Whether it’s a friend or colleague’s birthday, celebrating a milestone, a new parent, an I love you or I’m sorry – if you’re looking for an alternative or accompaniment to flowers, Happy Cake Day can make it happen. Sounds delicious! It is. My passion for baking from scratch in my Alderley home studio means I take advantage of seasonal ingredients to create cakes that don’t just look good, they taste fantastic. Happy Cake Day takes the fuss out of ordering with three standard sizes (starting from $50). Each weekday a new design and flavour is released. How did that come about? For more than a decade I had been operating my couture cake business
Cake That! supplying wedding and special event cakes. But every day I’d be turning away clients who needed a cake “now”. Fast forward a few years, and two small children, and the idea kept on getting louder in my mind. This year I decided to take the plunge. Why cake delivery? These days we are more time poor than ever. With the majority of us having the internet right at our fingertips, I wanted to create a seamless way to order cake without having to navigate to the shop and collect it. Tell us about your food journey ... As a child and through adulthood my grandmother baked with me and we shared our excitement for baking. My dad was a chef so when it was time to choose a career it was a no-brainer. After high school I was accepted into the College of Tourism and Hospitality in South Brisbane where I did 12 months of intensive chef training before my apprenticeship. I did my
formal training with Qantas and once qualified I worked at The Beaufort Heritage – which became the Stamford Plaza Hotel. In 2004 I launched Cake That! Any career highlights? I’ve had the privilege of baking for some pretty special people in my career as a chef. But my favourite memory would have to be baking as a child with my grandmother, putting on her apron and getting to create. What’s your favourite cake to eat? I love fruitcake. It’s a polarising flavour, but it’s my absolute favourite. Your favourite Brissie spots to eat? I love Freja’s in Wilston Village for breakfast. Tartufo in the Valley for dinner, and my latest favourite is Greca at Howard Smith Wharves. I'm always on the hunt for wow desserts! EMMA SCHAFER happycakeday.com.au

TURKISH DELIGHT ... The pared-back interior at Olive Thyme lets the flavours do the talking; and (below) the grilled octopus meze.
Spice whirl RESTAURANT Tony Harper
O
live Thyme is one of those restaurants that whacks you in the face (in a good way) the minute you walk in the door. Partly it’s the aromas – Turkish bread being toasted, meats grilling, garlic (plenty of it), herbs, spices. It’s a heady melange, mixed in with the serious intent of the people manning the place. These are no part-timers; they know the business and they care. I’ll be frank, knowledge of Turkish cuisine – in fact Turkish culture in general – is well beyond my ken. But I’m intrigued; it promises so much magic and mystery – Scheherazade, Constantinople, genies and eunuchs, rosewater, pomegranate, dates and pistachios, cardamom, pastries and meats on spits. Or am I muddling my Middle-Eastern cuisines? Possibly. But Olive Thyme certainly smells exotic and even if Albion is a far cry from Istanbul, it oozes promise, somehow doing 12 BRISBANE NEWS November 13-19, 2019
With too much to try in a single sitting, this tempting Turkish deserves repeat visits
so without the aid of carpets decorating the walls and hookahs dotted around the place. OK, there’s a wall with a display of ceramics, but that’s about it for frippery in a room full of linen-covered tables, bentwood chairs, a bar and open kitchen. I settle in with the menu and a mocktail of sour cherry juice, mineral water, pomegranate juice and Persian fairy floss ($11) and I’m hooked. Here’s the exotica I’m seeking and I haven’t even got to the food. OK, perhaps a shot of raki would make it better, but it’s lunch time and I’m driving. The Olive Thyme menu begins with a couple of Turkish breads, through dips, meze and pide, to larger, meat based dishes. We have a crack at all but the pide. For $19 we get a plate with all four dips plus a puffed lavoche. There’s hummus with currants and cured beef; eggplant; muhammara – peppers, spices, walnut and labneh – and yoghurt, zucchini and walnut. The hummus is awesome. Then, from mezes – a fabulous, rustic, ridiculously generous plate of grilled
octopus (two hefty tentacles) with celery, capers, beans, dill, parsley, and grapefruit dressing ($22); it tastes like the ocean enhanced by just the right amount of chargrilling and the bits on the side. And a plate of lentil kofte ($17). By the time we get to the meat platter ($33) our appetites are spent, but we can still taste the work that has gone into bastes and marinades. There are both chicken and lamb shish, plus adana, which is minced lamb cooked – like the others – on a skewer. To the side are by now superfluous rice, salad and sauces. It’s the trouble with this style of food and a table of two; temptation trumps appetite. If I had my time again I’d tackle Olive Thyme with a larger table, and wade headlong into the pide menu. I’d make sure I had enough time to do everything justice, because it deserves a better look than I gave it – effort, passion and talent have obviously been spent on the restaurant. And I probably wouldn’t drive: the raki beckons.

ART CATCH A BOUQUET ... (Clockwise from main) Clare Toms’ Evoke and With Each Step, A Flower Blooms; Oliver Shepherd’s Light Lily.
Genius in a bottle Two artists reach for the sublime with works of botanical beauty that pay homage to favourite tipples and the wonders of nature Phil Brown
A
rtist Oliver Shepherd doesn’t mind the odd tipple. And that is reflected in his art. In his latest exhibition at Lethbridge Gallery in Paddington, where he is showing alongside Clare Toms, he continues a theme reminiscent of his last exhibition. In fact this one could be considered a continuation of that show which was entitled The Gin Bar. This exhibition is entitled Botanicals and, while still paying homage to his beloved gin, this time it expands to other preferred beverages with a botanical connection. There has been a shift away in this work 14 BRISBANE NEWS November 13-19, 2019
from primary colours to dramatic monochrome and niche hues such as chartreuse and orange. What he gives us are still-life pieces that work without having to appreciate the fact that they are depictions of alcoholic beverages – although you might like that. There’s one of a French champagne bottle and glass, another of Pernod (absinthe, which makes the heart grow fonder) and as an aperitif Oliver presents pieces in other genres in which he works – a nude and two pieces on the theme of chess which sway between realism, surrealism and trompe l’oeil. His work is highly stylised and
beautifully realised. It’s no surprise to find that he was a fan of the film Girl with a Pearl Earring. He skipped law lectures at the University of Adelaide to see it. “Watching Vermeer and Griet grind up the raw pigments, set up the studio, discuss light and colour, that’s all it took,” he says. “I was hooked. From there I bought some oils, brushes and canvas boards and just messed around. Over a decade later and I’m still in love with painting.” It shows. Clare Toms’ work is beautiful. Clare divides her time between Melbourne and Mexico nowadays. She works in photography and installation at times but majored in painting at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, and that remains her main area of practice. Conceptually Clare’s work explores themes of the intangible and physical transience, spirituality and our interconnectedness with the environment.
A work such as Alcedo, which features a kingfisher emerging from the depths of large peony blooms, explores the mythology and spiritual associations of the kingfisher, “to trust our intuition, dive deeper into the subconscious, release the past and move freely into the future”. Her works are gorgeous visual offerings and collections of thoughts that invite the audience to transcend the limits of time, place, reality, the sublime and physical and non-physical experiences. “I use art creation as a way of digesting my thoughts on our relationship to the environment, our relationship to one another, our relationship to death and the transitory nature of life,” Clare says. Beautifully put, I must say. Oliver Shepherd: Botanicals, Clare Toms: Evoke, until Nov 26, Lethbridge Gallery, 136 Latrobe Tce, Paddington, free admission. lethbridgegallery.com

leaders. Social media has become, in some of its darker corners, a lush hunting ground for those who seek to hurt others. I wanted to write a counterpoint to that, because most people, I find, are actually filled to the brim with kindness, and I wanted to celebrate that. Florence and Albert are garden lovers – do you have a green thumb? If you saw my garden you would know the answer is a very resounding “No”. But I think writers often create characters and scenarios they themselves would love to be or be in. I would love to be a gardener, the sort of person who coaxes life from the dirt, but alas I am not, and cannot. So instead, I went for lots of long walks in the bushland near my home and then I went to the experts like Claire Bickle, a marvellous gardener and writer, and literally asked, “What plant is that?”
COOL TO BE KIND ... Frances Whiting’s The Best Kind of Beautiful is attracting rave reviews.

Hemingway quote: “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” Writing the weekly column can be hard, but after 23 years, a certain amount of muscle memory kicks in. The column has a very distinct flow or rhythm (at least it does in my head!), so I just settle into it and write. But novel writing can be both excruciating and exhilarating; sometimes at the same time!

uch-loved Courier-Mail and Sunday Mail journalist Frances Whiting has just released her hotly anticipated new novel, The Best Kind of Beautiful ($33, Macmillan). It’s been six years since readers fell in love with her debut, Walking on Trampolines, but when readers meet nature lovers Florence and Albert they’ll know it was worth the wait. Colleagues and awkwardly friendly, Florence and Albert work together, enjoy talking books and plants, and think they’ve got each other figured out. But just how well do you really know anyone? Amid a flurry of book-signing events for the novel that is garnering rave reviews, Frances sits down with Brisbane News for a
chat about her writing process, favourite local haunts and the underlying message in this heartwarming tale. Where do you write? Anywhere I can! Until recently I didn’t have a designated home office area or writing space, so much of this book was written on a laptop on my bed. Also at my local library, a haven of peace which also appears figuratively in the pages of The Best Kind of Beautiful. Which is harder – writing your weekly column or writing a book? Novel writing is a much more complicated animal to wrestle. I love that Ernest
You’ve been a teacher, a journalist and an author – any other career aspirations? I would love to be a librarian or a book store owner or staff member. Any place where I am surrounded by books and can literally breathe them in (I have been known to open a book and have a good old sniff!) sounds very alluring to me. I do not discount any of those professions as a possible future career.
This story also celebrates book stores and libraries – what is their power? Superpowers, actually! The ability to both completely transform lives and transport people from one sort of life to another. Favourite Brisbane book store? Don’t! It’s like asking a parent who their favourite child is. But I do love Avid Reader at West End and Riverbend at Bulimba. I can waste all sorts of time there. But truly, I’ve never met a bookstore I don’t like! Favourite Brisbane park/green space? I have so many but I particularly love Mount Coot-tha. It’s not much of a mountain, size wise, but it’s our mountain! SAVE THE DATE ... Kindness is a strong underlying theme in The Best Kind of Beautiful. Why is it so important now? It is and quite purposefully. We are seeing – and our children are seeing – examples of bullying, intimidation and meanspiritedness every single day, sometimes by very powerful political and business

SLEIGH BELLES ... Michelle Yeoh and Emilia Clarke in the heartwarming Last Christmas.
LAST CHRISTMAS (PG) hhhkj Director Paul Feig Starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, Emma Thompson First, let’s start with a disclaimer: Christmas movies simply aren’t judged by the same rules as their non-festive counterparts. There’s a much higher tolerance for schmaltz. Quasi-religious experiences are common. Glitter and tinsel are mandatory. Last Christmas, written by Emma Thompson and Bryony Kimmings and directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), follows closely in that tradition. Think of a more secular version of It’s a Wonderful Life, transplanted to Brexit-era London and featuring a contemporary female
protagonist, and you’re on the right track. Emilia Clarke will be forever associated with Game Of Thrones’ dragon queen Daenerys Targaryen, but she also has a natural affinity for 21st century kooks (Me Before You). The English actor's out-sized smile and big-hearted klutziness are hugely appealing – even when the humour doesn’t entirely hit the mark. And so it is here. In Last Christmas, named after the George Michael hit that is performed in the film’s feel-good finale, she plays Kate, a would-be singer moonlighting as an elf in a Covent Garden Christmas store. After a series of bad decisions, the selfdestructive singleton eventually runs out of couches to sleep on. In desperation, she returns to the family home, which is dominated by her dour, unhappy mother, a
Yugoslavian immigrant played with theatrical relish by Thompson. About the same time, Kate (an anglicisation of her birth name Katarina) has a serendipitous encounter with a dashing cyclist (Crazy Rich Asians’ Henry Golding). There’s something a bit odd about Tom – one obvious tell is the strange little dance he performs at random moments (a move that channels Gene Kelly in Singin’ in the Rain or Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz). His physical restraint is also rather curious, and since he’s got rid of his mobile phone, he can be a bit hard to track down. But he’s a good listener and even better company. Under Tom’s tutelage, Kate starts to take better care of herself and her relationships with those around her. But as time passes, it becomes clear that
PAIN AND GLORY (MA15+) hhhhj Director Pedro Almodovar Starring Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, Asier Etxeandia Navel-gazing isn’t generally regarded as a spectator sport, but Pedro Almodovar’s flair for colour-saturated melodrama enlivens and enriches what is essentially an interior process. And by casting Antonio Banderas, 59, as his on-screen alter ego, the Spanish director ensures audience attention, even when the character himself wallows in selfpity or dozes in a heroin haze. Banderas’ superficially unsympathetic performance as Salvador Mallo, a renowned filmmaker crippled by chronic pain, is among the best of his career. Mallo’s debilitating illnesses, including 16 BRISBANE NEWS November 13-19, 2019
BLURRED LINES ... Antonio Banderas as filmmaker Mallo who struggles with chronic pain and the creative process. backache, migraines and a mysterious choking disorder, have stopped him from making films. His enforced early retirement, exacerbated by the death of his mother (Penelope Cruz), sends him into a tailspin. When the prescribed drugs no longer do
the trick, Mallo turns to heroin – though it’s not entirely clear whether that’s to escape the pain or his depression. Distracting the director – and his audience – from utter self-absorption is the exuberant interior decoration of his Madrid apartment,
he’s holding something back. When Tom goes MIA for several weeks, Kate is drawn to the homeless shelter where he volunteers. In his absence, she finds her own niche there. Last Christmas leads us slowly, inexorably towards a resolution that feels at once obvious and strangely satisfying (within the very particular laws of yuletide cinema). There’s a quietly insistent subplot that addresses racial and cultural tolerance against a backdrop of growing xenophobia – supported by the casting of Michelle Yeoh as Kate’s long-suffering employer Santa. And it’s hard to argue with the movie’s argument for the healing properties of kindness and compassion. A seasonally appropriate crowd-pleaser – with a poignant twist.
impeccably framed by Almodovar, to whom it belongs in real life. Mallo’s reconciliation with Alberto Crespo (Etxeandia), an actor to whom he hasn’t spoken for 30 years, provides the catalyst for the events that follow. Having recently seen a restored print of the film which led to the rift, Mallo invites Crespo to an upcoming Q&A screening. When the event rolls around, however, the pair are too wasted to attend, and this leads to a very funny scene in which they answer a question from the packed auditorium via speakerphone. Death, desire, forgiveness, and that allimportant maternal relationship – Pain and Glory explores many of Almodovar’s customary preoccupations. But this film feels unusually personal, and as a result, it strikes a deeper chord. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

Cream of the crop For a relaxing day in the country, take a scenic drive to this verdant valley outside Hobart Phil Brown
SO REFINED ... The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery cooking school and farm; high tea at the Glen Derwent Tea Rooms, New Norfolk. Pictures: Peter Mathew, Matt Thompson
A
decade ago we visited a friend near New Norfolk in the Derwent Valley outside Hobart and a vision stayed with me. The picture in my mind was of a verdant river valley reminiscent of England or Scotland. I happened to like that so on a trip to Hobart a couple of months ago we set aside a day for a Derwent Valley drive. It’s one of several recommended day trips out of Hobart where we were staying in one of the harbourfront Sullivans Cove apartments in a historical building next to the famous Henry Jones Art Hotel. We had a hire car and the route is relatively simple and I’m all about keeping it simple on a holiday because I want to relax. But maybe I was too relaxed. I usually plan things meticulously but this time I decided to wing it a bit and just go with the flow. Not such a good idea when the centrepiece of our Derwent Valley drive was to be a visit to The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery, which is quite famous. We had even kindly been given the number of Alex Palmer of Tasmania Gourmet Food Tours, who takes the Agrarian Kitchen Eatery and Derwent Valley Gourmet Tour, but when I rang Alex, he broke it to me. The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery is closed Tuesdays. Damn! I should have checked but like I said, I was trying to be relaxed. The tour is firmly on the agenda for next time but in the meantime, please, give Alex a call and be our guests! V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
Alex’s tour through the picturesque Derwent Valley with a gourmet lunch at the award-winning eatery would have been a highlight. Never mind, we were determined to enjoy our drive so we set off and, rather serendipitously our first stop was New Norfolk and the Glen Derwent Tea Rooms, run by Liz Virtue, the sister of a Brisbane acquaintance. Of course being so relaxed I hadn’t rung ahead and of course, Liz was on holiday but thankfully the joint was open and we feasted on scones, fresh from the oven, with jam and cream. The tea rooms are part of the Glen Derwent Heritage Retreat, an iconic historic B&B that is charming indeed. Fortifying ourselves we pushed on with a recommendation. Visit Russell Falls in the Mt Field National Park, the folks at the tea
rooms said, and it wasn’t that far so we did, driving there through gorgeous country. Driving up the Derwent Valley is akin to driving through the UK countryside. You can go as far as the famous Lake Pedder but we stopped at Mt Field National Park to do the short circuit (it’s just a stroll really) to view Russell Falls. This lush national park has a great visitor centre and cafe with maps of the various walks. There are some great alpine trails, nice and snowy at that time of year, but a stroll was all we required and besides, we intended to lunch in New Norfolk so we tootled back down the valley. I’d heard that the Stefano Lubiana Wines just outside the town had a great restaurant so rang them on the way and of course, they were closed too. It seems that on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, things are
often closed there. My wife and son glowered at me. “Why didn’t you check all this?” they asked. But like I said, I was trying to be relaxed. Too relaxed, as it turned out. Even the town’s top antique store, The Drill Hall Emporium, was closed but some places were open. New Norfolk is a quaint, bustling little town on the River Derwent. It has a rich history, quality produce and pretty rural scenery. It’s also the commercial and residential heart of the Derwent Valley. The town is the third oldest settlement in Tasmania, established by evacuees relocated from Norfolk Island after the island prison was abandoned in 1807. Its historic past is evident in the many early buildings found in the town including one of Australia’s oldest pubs and Australia’s oldest Anglican church, St Matthew’s. It also has one of Australia’s few traditional village squares. New Norfolk is only 30 minutes from downtown Hobart which makes it eminently doable. With The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery closed we lunched at The Cake Lady Cafe, a cosy little spot run by some Ukrainian folk. It was great. And then we tootled back down to Hobart, completing a rather pleasant outing. Next time I will get a bit more organised though. I promise. ore and more, families are trading in their suburban homes for a slice of Brisbane’s city life. Take Harry, Veeta and their two teenagers, who moved from their big fourbedroom house in the western suburbs into a brand new hotel apartment in South Bank last year – along with the family dog. “We decided that we wanted to experience all that Brisbane has to offer,” Harry says. Their luxurious new digs take in beautiful views of the Brisbane River, the city and its streetscapes. “We wanted to live in a vibrant location that offered diversity and accessibility to Brisbane’s central hub of activity. This suited our lifestyle as we often travel locally and overseas and wanted a home that connected us to Brisbane. The apartment offers us the perfect vantage point to view the movement and activities that celebrate Brisbane,” Veeta says. While the new apartment ticked all the right boxes, the one thing missing was a feeling that it was their own. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
“We felt we wanted to personalise the space and add our own stamp,” Harry says. The couple engaged Wrightson Stewart to create a unique space that felt like a glamorous city apartment, but was still casual enough for the whole family to feel comfortable in. Director Ian Wrightson says mood and atmosphere were important to the brief, along with maximising the view. “The apartment featured a bold and eclectic selection of finishes and materials chosen by the client, which had not been fully resolved with the interior selections,” he says. “Our key design objective was to expand on this eclectic layering through a selection of bold wall coverings, strong floor coverings and tonal soft furnishings to allow the scheme to be both intensified and fully developed.” The interiors feature a balanced contrast between dark and light textures. Every wall is treated with either graphic wallpaper (Graffito by Kelly Wearstler), textured wall covering (Arte Cantala collection Craft pattern), upholstered
suede panels with brass inlay, or floor to ceiling joinery in Italian Wenge. Combined with metallic S-Fold sheer curtains, the curated finishes offer a layering effect that is luxurious, dramatic and soothing. The central kitchen and living area is balanced and defined with custom joinery and furniture offering seamless function for day-to-day family rituals while taking in the city and river views. “The clients really wanted to feel a great connection to the city and feel a sense of arrival every time they entered the apartment,” Ian says.
We wanted to experience all that Brisbane has to offer … The apartment is a perfect vantage point
A dove grey custom-made sofa was paired with a rug designed by Wrightson Stewart while the sculptural built-in banquette was upholstered in velvet to add drama to the dining area. Here, a striking Lee Broom chandelier hangs overhead and a painting by Skye Targett takes pride of place on the wall. It is one of many artworks, sculptures and furniture pieces the family has collected during their travels, with sentimental items integrated thoughtfully throughout the home including an antique chest sitting in the entry. “Our aim for the spaces we design is for them to be highly considered in both aesthetics and practicality. The clients’ brief was an interior of understated elegance. It is a sophisticated space,” Ian says. Harry and Veeta couldn’t agree more. “We enjoy going out into South Bank and taking advantage of all it has to offer, but we love coming home to retreat in our apartment,” Veeta says. wrightsonstewart.com.au Photography: Kylie Hood

deciding on the best cooling appliances to suit your needs,” he says. In Appliances Online’s guide for choosing the right cooling appliance, the following tips are suggested: 1 When looking at buying an airconditioner, how big is the area needing to be cooled? To find the number of kilowatts required to cool the space, multiply the length by the width of the room and then times this by 0.15. For example 5m x 4.5m = 27sq m (x 0.15) = 4.05kW. 2 Is the room insulated? If so, the smaller and less powerful the airconditioner needs to be, meaning potentially lower energy costs. 3 For those who live in dry or humid climates, consider split-system or portable airconditioners. 4 Some apartment or unit complexes don’t allow for the installation of wall units, so portable or window airconditioners are an alternative. 5 When choosing a fan, consider the size of the room. A smaller room generally only needs a pedestal fan whereas larger areas could benefit from a high-velocity floor fan. 6 For those with smaller children or pets, tower fans are a safe option as they are blade free and quieter in operation. There is no need to sweat the small stuff when buying a cooling appliance, so long as consumers are buying the right product for their lifestyle.
The hot, dry conditions that are on the way are the perfect recipe for bushfires and gutters that are full of leaves and debris are a fire hazard. Owner Sherrie Blundell says Leaf Shield Gutter Protection’s gutter guards prevents this build-up of leaves and other blockages, and also stops embers from getting underneath the roof giving people peace of mind throughout the fire season. “The Leafshield system will keep gutters clear all year round and will custom fit to any home,” she says. “Our range of aluminium and stainless gutter meshes are Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rated. “While preventing a build-up of leaves, the Leafshield system helps keep vermin and other pests out of gutters.” PH: 1300 362 246 LEAFSHIELD.NET.AU

Made from a 100 per cent poly-resin material that looks and feels like wood, Belinda says the products from Cosmopolitan Shutters never need painting and will not fade, crack, peel or chip. “For outside areas, we recommend our Louvreshield range of aluminium shutters; they are hard-wearing, easy to clean and can be custom-made,” Belinda says. 2/908 KINGSFORD SMITH DR, EAGLE FARM PH: 3268 5699 35/38 KENDOR ST, ARUNDEL PH: 5563 7440 1/10 PREMIER CCT, WARANA PH: 5493 8900 COSMOPOLITANSHUTTERS.COM.AU

Phil Brown When I was a fledgling Beatles nut, my folks were probably young enough to listen to The Beatles but they didn’t. They had their own square music What sort of music did your parents listen to? I was having a discussion about this the other night at the Doo-Bop Jazz Bar in the city. We went along for dinner and a show, which in this case was the talented Tyrone Noonan doing his Frank Sinatra stuff, which is terrific. Ty has a great voice and a brilliant backing combo. And who doesn’t love Sinatra? My parents did and they had a few Sinatra records. And listening to Sinatra (or Tyrone doing Sinatra, at least) started a conversation about what else our parents listened to. In the 1960s when I was a fledgling Beatles nut, my folks were probably young enough to listen to The
School holiday dates available
Beatles but they didn’t. They had their own square music. There was The Kingston Trio, for starters. Who listens to them anymore? I like folk music and thought they were pretty good so this was one of my parents’ records that I actually liked. They had some Pat Boone albums too. Remember Pat Boone? He was one of the most clean-cut pop stars in history and he rocked a cardigan or two. My parents met him one night when they were out on the town in Hong Kong in the late 1960s. He was huge back then. I remember Mum and Dad played Moon River over and over. My mum was also keen on Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass. Now I’ll bet your
parents had an album or two of theirs too. Remember The Lonely Bull? That song came out in late 1962 and was on high rotation on our Grundig stereogram. Bing Crosby was also a go-to for Mum and Dad and my father used to sing along. My dad liked to sing and in the car often serenaded us with songs like Oh My Papa and Blues in The Night, which was made famous by Ella Fitzgerald. “A man is a two-face, a worrisome thing / Who’ll leave you to sing the blues in the night.” Do you know this song? It was on the soundtrack of the BBC series The Singing Detective too. It’s a ripper. But my favourite album was my father’s
LP of rugby songs, dirty ditties by a group calling themselves The Jock Strapp Ensemble. He never put it on when we were around but I used to play it to my friends when they came over and my mum and dad weren’t home. It was pretty blue and featured a famous song called The Ball of Kirriemuir which is ribald to say the least. “Four-and-twenty virgins come down from Inverness, And when the Ball was over, there were fourand-twenty less.” A bit naughty. Mum caught us playing it one day and hid it after that, immediately putting on a Pat Boone record as a corrective. Which wasn’t quite as entertaining.

California dreaming Tranquil surrounds on a hilltop block are on offer with this sprawling single-level home. Featuring plenty of entertaining space, including an in-ground pool with a pergola, the cavity brick home has a spacious and light-filled setting. Marketing agent Christine Rudolph says it has been a cherished family home retained for three generations and tightly held for more than four decades. “Perched elegantly on an elevated, flat 1417sq m block, this traditional Californian bungalow, has been architecturally transformed, seamlessly creating a large, one level gracious residence, sympathetic to its traditional origins,” she says. An open-plan living and dining hub sits in the heart of the home’s floorplan, with polished timber floors and a neutral colour palette. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors draw in natural light and there are entrances to a leafy courtyard with a water feature, as well as a covered patio. The adjacent pool pergola offers further entertaining space and boasts views over lush greenery and city lights in the
distance. Back inside the residence, the modern kitchen features a breakfast bar, a butler’s pantry, and European appliances. There’s also an entry point to the pool area for easy outdoor dining. The five bedrooms sit in the left wing, all with neutral, light-filled interiors and ornate cornices in keeping with the style of the house. The main bedroom has a walkin wardrobe, and all the others have builtin wardrobes and are serviced by two stylish bathrooms.

Panorama over the city impresses It was the views that really clinched the deal for Peter Marles when he first looked at this beautiful Paddington property in 2005. The hilltop home, which was built between 1939 and 1941 in the English revival style, has panoramic city and suburban views, which can be enjoyed from many areas of the house, including the main bedroom. Designed by renowned architect of the time, Eric P Trewern, the three-level home still retains many of the Art Deco features he included. After living in the home for a couple of years, Peter renovated it to suit a more modern lifestyle. “We have done a significant amount of work since then to make it much more contemporary,” he says. “There was minimal garage space, we improved that. “The house was really a series of smaller rooms, so we took all the walls out and
suspended the roof, so it is all open-plan now. “We added a family room on the back and two decks and a new swimming pool. We retained all the chandeliers and all the Art Deco ceilings and things.” Peter says one of his favourite parts of the house is the back deck, which has 270degree views as far as Moreton Bay. “That is how high up the house is and there is always a beautiful breeze up there,” he says.
