This week... No one makes old new quite like Brisbane’s own Shake & Stir theatre company. The creative powerhouses have bagged Helpmann Award nominations and a swag of Matilda Awards for their clever interpretations of classic novels and their phenomenal stage productions. They’re at it again with Charlotte Bronte’s haunting classic Jane Eyre. With the help of a surprise music act, the group has – as writer Hannah Davies so perfectly puts it (P8) – “catapulted Jane Eyre into the modern age”. This will be one show not to miss. Tony Harper’s restaurant review (P12) is another cracker this week and if you’re looking for some sweet fun over the school holidays why not try your hand at dessert queen Katherine Sabbath’s ice-cream sambos (P13). Talk about a crowd pleaser. Enjoy, Emma * Leesa is on leave

LIFE

Alicia Pyke So it’s definitely not an age thing, it’s a me thing, and it took a while, but I refuse to be embarrassed about needing hearing aids Recently I shared how reluctant I’d been to get my first reading glasses. Well, somehow I neglected to mention my specs – which I now love – aren’t the only wearable I’ve come to rely on to sharpen up my senses. You see, I also wear hearing aids. Given how much I share of my world, it might seem strange my dodgy hearing has never come up. But it’s almost two years since I began wearing hearing aids, and I’m now so used to them, I usually forget they’re part of my life. Unlike the specs, which are a classic symbol of age-related decline, the hearing

aids make up for a shortfall that had always been present, I just didn’t know about it. My type of hearing loss is called the “cookie bite” kind. Also dubbed U-shaped hearing loss (the description of someone biting a cookie creates the U), it means I have trouble with mid-frequency sounds and probably always have had, to some degree. Mid-pitched sounds are associated with general conversation, so it’s very different to typical age-related hearing loss, where high-pitched sounds get harder to discern. Cookie bite hearing loss often goes undetected until someone aged between 30

and 40 realises they no longer enjoy socialising in groups and/or their boss points out how shouty their “inside voice” has become – both clear signs of impaired hearing. They might also struggle with hearing men’s deeper voices, particularly their husband’s if he has a tendency to mumble. They could even experience all of these symptoms, freak out, then do nothing. Can you tell that’s what I did? Confused my hearing was going downhill fast for no apparent reason, I had a few hearing tests in my late 30s, but largely ignored it because I hated the idea of

relying on hearing aids forever. That came to an end when I was about to go overseas for a year and knew the only way I’d cope was by restoring one of my most important senses. I was 41. Well short of being 79, which is the average age of people with hearing loss who access government hearing services in Australia. So it’s definitely not an age thing, it’s a me thing, and it took a while, but I refuse to be embarrassed about needing hearing aids. They work, I can hear and my husband rarely ever mumbles any more.

Mane event Since ’coming out’ about her androgenic alopecia, Kellie Scott has become the boss of her hair loss Emma Schafer You’d be forgiven for thinking Kellie Scott has a live-in hairdresser. The seriously luscious locks on the 34-year-old journalist are bouncy and blonde one day and balayaged the next. Last week she was a redhead, and the week before she was rocking pastel pink tresses with an on-trend fringe. But Kellie has barely stepped foot in a hair salon in seven years. She has androgenic alopecia – also known as female pattern hair loss – and has been wearing wigs and hair pieces, known as toppers, for the past two years. Her condition has no known cure or, according to Kellie, effective treatment. “I was 27 when I first noticed my hair was thinning, but I’d always had thin and fine hair anyway,” Kellie, of Mount Gravatt East says. “But then over the years the thinning got progressively worse and I knew there was something medically going on.” Cue countless afternoons in the offices of medical specialists searching for answers. “Some said temporary shedding, and then others androgenic alopecia, but no one could tell me what caused it. They’d just take guesses,” Kellie remembers. She thinks changing her contraceptive pill may have sparked the condition, but she chooses not to waste much time thinking about it anymore. “In the end, the most freeing thing for me was just forgetting about searching for medical answers and instead finding a cosmetic solution. Yesterday I switched up my hair three times. When you start

seeing hair loss as an opportunity to accessorise you become as obsessed with changing it as much as your outfit. Believe me, going bald can be fun,” she says. Now, every day is a good hair day for the Hair Loss Boss. That’s what Kellie goes by on Instagram, @hairlossboss, where her hair-styling tips and hair loss straight talk have amassed her 11,000 followers. “It was about two years ago when I got my first topper and I basically put a post up on Instagram that said: I’m wearing fake hair, get over it,” Kellie says of “coming out” about her hair loss. “I had such a beautiful response, so I just started sharing all my trials and errors and day-to-day hair stuff.” More recently Kellie has used the platform to arrange meet-ups with other Brisbane women dealing with hair loss. “People want to know how to accept their hair loss and that’s what I like to help them with,” she says. They also want guy help. “I find most women are fearful of men’s reactions to their hair loss,” says Kellie, who lives with her concreter boyfriend Travis French, 37. “It’s like this: Most women worry that when they have a sleepover with a guy he’ll see them without any makeup in the morning. But for women with hair loss, we’ve got to take our hair off when we ‘get it on’, so it’s a whole new level of insecurity,” Kellie laughs. “My advice is always this: If you make a big deal out of it, a man will follow your lead. “Be the boss of your hair loss.”

Fresh Eyre The creative minds at Brisbane’s Shake & Stir theatre company are no strangers to giving new life to old tales, and this time they’re turning their talents to Charlotte Bronte’s masterpiece Hannah Davies

t’s one of the greatest romances ever written – a brooding Gothic mystery that has spanned the generations and captivated millions across the world. And soon Charlotte Bronte’s classic novel Jane Eyre will be catapulted into the modern age, as awardwinning Brisbane theatre company Shake & Stir prepare to reimagine the story with a musical score. The production opens at QPAC’s intimate Cremorne Theatre this month, and coartistic director Nick Skubij says audiences are in for a surprise – not least because the music has been written by Superjesus frontwoman and multiple ARIA-awardwinning rock star Sarah McLeod. “It’s not a traditionalist piece,” Nick says. “We have stayed very true to the story but this is a modern interpretation, so it will feel like the book but as though you are seeing it with fresh eyes. It’s not a

musical as such because the music is much more integrated. “Like a film, it underscores and guides the viewer through the emotion of what’s happening. We hope the audience will feel like they are part of the show and that their hearts are beating alongside the characters.” It’s not the first time Shake & Stir has adapted a much-loved literary classic, with previous triumphs including Wuthering Heights, Dracula, Fantastic Mr Fox and George Orwell’s 1984. Nick says Jane Eyre was the perfect choice for a contemporary stage adaptation. “We love the idea of taking classic literature which has possibly become a bit dusty over the years, brushing it off, and reimagining it for audiences today,” he says. “Gothic lit lends itself to such dramaticality. It is so atmospheric and there are so many opportunities for the design team. “One of the biggest challenges of Jane Eyre has also been what makes it so exciting and that is trying to reinvent it

without tearing it apart. So many people like the book and are familiar with it so we do have to appease those people.” Bronte’s most beloved novel, written in 1847 and set in the north of England, describes the passionate love between the

courageous orphan Jane Eyre and the brilliant, brooding and domineering Rochester, the master of Thornfield Hall. The loneliness and cruelty of Jane’s childhood strengthens her natural independence and spirit, which prove

CREATING A STIR ... (Clockwise from far left) Sarah McLeod has penned music for Shake & Stir’s Jane Eyre and also acts in the adaptation; Nelle Lee, who plays the titular role; Shake & Stir’s co-artistic director Nick Skubij; a painting of Anne, Emily & Charlotte Bronte, by their brother Patrick Branwell Bronte.

invaluable when she takes a position as a governess at the gloomy mansion. But after Jane falls in love with her sardonic employer, her discovery of his terrible secret forces her to make a heartwrenching choice.

Excited to be playing the title role, actor Nelle Lee, 34, first fell in love with the book as a schoolgirl. “Every time I read it I find something more in the story,” she says. “It just seems to sit differently with me

depending on where I am in my life. It’s a big job to be playing Jane but it’s definitely a bucket list role for me. “Bronte created this character who is so revolutionary and with so much depth. The journey she goes on is very extensive

and moving and I’m bracing myself for the enormity of it and working my arse off to make sure I do her justice. “I’m hoping to bring to life the truth that Jane carries with her, the fire inside her and the fact that she’s not willing to settle into the predetermined role that society is trying to force upon her. She has a spirit that can’t be tamed.” Nelle, who is also the show’s co-artistic director, says themes in the story are still relevant today. “Bronte’s writing was so modern for the period that it’s really stood the test of time. “Jane is just a regular person trying to forge her own path and make her own way in the world against stereotypes that still exist today.

COVER STORY

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “I like to think I have certain Jane qualities,” she adds. The cast is small, but joining Nelle on stage will be Helen Howard and Anthony Standish, as well as music maker Sarah McLeod who is also taking on two acting roles – the obligatory “mad woman” of Gothic literature, and Jane’s best friend in the orphanage. Sarah jumped at the chance to get involved after working with Shake & Stir on last year’s production of American Idiot. “I admire their work because they take classics and spin them on their head,” she says. “I’m not familiar with acting but that’s good because it takes me out of my comfort zone and is a massive passion of mine.” In terms of the score, Sarah, who will also sing and play piano in the show, set out to create “moody feel pieces”.

“There is no rock singing in it at all,” she explains. “The music is atmospheric and mostly piano, which is not my first instrument. It comes from a dark place, which I love, and it’s moody but with gentle vocals to enhance the acting. It’s spine tingling.” In an amusing aside, Sarah confesses when she read Jane Eyre as a child she was “bored shitless and didn’t care”. “I was 15 and don’t think I even finished it,” she says. “As a result, if anyone else had asked me to be in Jane Eyre I would have questioned whether they were talking to the right person. “But this is Shake & Stir and they’re making it cool. I know this production will be a hit because they think outside the box.” Jane Eyre, Oct 18-Nov 9, Cremorne Theatre, QPAC, South Bank, from $65, qpac.com.au

Cuppa time These three friends have started a business to make women’s lives easier – and it’s good for the planet too

This Brisbane trio wants to break the “silly taboo” that surrounds women’s periods and they’re using a reusable menstrual cup to do it. Matilda Marsh, 31, Fiona McKeague, 33, and Sarah Ripper, 32, are behind the social enterprise Myoni, one of only two reusable menstrual cups designed and manufactured in Australia. They’re made from a recyclable, medical-grade polymer and are used like tampons but catch blood instead of absorbing it. Matilda, a former community development worker, says one cup could be used in place of “hundreds” of pads or tampons in its lifetime, but she acknowledges people could be “a bit put off” by the product. “We still have a lot shame and silly taboo about menstruation and blood that comes from certain places,” says Matilda,

who lives in Clontarf where she splits her time between her young family and Myoni. “We want to start having more of a conversation around periods and making it a normal thing. Menstrual cups save so much time and money and space: you don’t have to have a month’s worth of product in your bathroom cabinet.” The three co-founders say they prefer menstrual cups for different reasons. Fiona, of Woolloongabba, first chose a cup for practical purposes – she would always forget to buy tampons. “Every month I would get surprised and have to make an unplanned trip to the shops. It made so much sense to buy something once and be done with it,” she says. The company donates cups to domestic violence charity Share the Dignity and 50 per cent of its profits go to its community partners. myoni.love

Front runner With a whiff of country thanks to the cowhides, this riverside haunt is certainly no one-trick pony RESTAURANT Tony Harper If you picked Pony up by its handles, whisked it away from its inner-city riverside haunt and landed it somewhere less salubrious, what would it have left? Well the parking wouldn’t be quite so extortionate for starters. But would the food, the place and the people stack up without the ritzy view and the critical mass of the inner-city work force? I reckon it would. There’s more to Pony than mere site. It’s a well considered, intriguing space with an open kitchen as the centrepiece and wood, concrete and cowhides adding just a whiff of country air to an otherwise distinctly urban environment. And the service is everything you expect from a long-established, CBD restaurant – sharp, attentive (at times perhaps too much so) and friendly. But better than looks and better than an affable staff is the thought behind the menu. It doesn’t seem to follow any common logic, genre or culture, it just does its own thing. And at times that thing is very, very good. Like spaetzle ($24) with parma ham, sheep’s cheese, celeriac and truffle somewhere in the mix. It ticks all of the pleasure boxes; truffle nicely woven – no 1990s overload – and celeriac pureed, crumbs of some sort, the cheese in sheets over the top. It’s rich, textural and very satisfying. And massive tiger prawns ($32) – four halves, perfectly grilled, on a puddle of seaweed oil and verjuice, fermented chilli in a pool right where the red spot would be if it were a red-spot prawn (except it’s inside, not out). I have been accused of not being able to

write an article without mentioning pork belly. It’s not true, but I do have a thing for pork (and, for the record, almost every other cut trumps belly) so I’m like a pitbull on a poodle when I see slow-cooked pork, roast pear, barley and lemon thyme ($37). It’s a nicely conceived dish, especially the barley – far more interesting than a quenelle of mash – but it’s probably the least impressive dish of the day; the meat a bit chewy and wanting another hour or two in the heat. Region rocks WINE Mike Frost For a comparatively new area the Porongurups sub-district of Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region is making plenty of well-deserved noise. It’s only about 25 years since the first grapes were planted there but the fame of its wine has spread far beyond its relatively isolated location northeast of Albany.

totally outclassed by a grilled (over coals) half knobby snapper, on a mix of sobrasada and beans (navy perhaps?) It’s simple and delicious. The chef seems to have a thing for grains and pulses, and they add a dimension to the food that I really like – texture and a kind of wholesomeness. For a place that seems so well conceived, it manages to list 20 beers (and ciders) that hardly veer from the

wastelands. Aside from two Belgians, Little Creatures is about the most exotic thing available … wow. The wine list is better, branching across the globe and spanning all sorts of prices and styles. In short, Pony ticks a lot of boxes, and not in a mundane, also-ran kind of way. It’s clever polished and I reckon it would easily thrive without the river views. But there it is, the river lapping its feet, which is merely the icing on the cake.

The west is making some of Australia’s best drops

One of the biggest vineyards and wineries in the Porongurups is Castle Rock Estate (pictured), which was established by Angelo and Wendy Diletti in 1983 and is now run by their son, Rob. Not surprisingly, given its prominence in the Great Southern, riesling is one of their best-known wines, and they produce four different versions: Skywalk ($18), Turret ($18), Estate ($23) and A&W ($35). The numerous medals and trophies awarded to

their rieslings have prompted wineries from other parts of Great Southern and further afield to source fruit from the Porongurups for their own rieslings. That’s not to say it’s the only white of note, the Castle Rock Diletti chardonnay ($30) is also worth seeking out. The reds include a rosé ($18), cabernet sauvignon ($23), shiraz ($25) and pinot noir ($32). castlerockestate.com.au

RECIPE

Hello sweetie Dessert queen Katherine Sabbath delivers the goods with this decadent snack stack Aussies are funny about long words: who can be bothered to say afternoon, when arvo will do? Or avocado, when we all know the best fruit in the world is the avo? Even the name of our fair nation gets shortened to Straya. So, when the rellies come for a barbie, serve them up an ice cream sambo. Bake the cookies in advance and have ice cream and plenty of toppings ready to go – freeze-dried fruit pieces, crushed nuts or pretzels, mini chocolate chips and toasted coconut.

BEDAZZLED ICE CREAM SAMBOS CHOCOLATE STUDDED COOKIES INGREDIENTS ¾ cup (180g) unsalted butter, softened ¾ cup (165g) caster sugar ½ cup (80g) dark brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 1 egg, chilled 2½ cups (400g) plain flour ½ tsp salt 1 cup (170g) candy coated chocolates METHOD Preheat the oven to 160°C fan forced. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Using an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter, caster sugar and brown sugar for five minutes, or until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and egg and beat until well combined. Add the flour and salt and beat until just combined. Refrigerate the cookie dough for at least 30 minutes so it firms up and is easier to handle. Roll the dough into balls the size of a golf ball and place on the trays, leaving a 5cm clearance around each one. Gently flatten each cookie and stud with the candy coated chocolates. Working in batches, bake the cookies for 20 minutes, or just until golden. Cool on a wire rack. Makes 10 ASSEMBLY AND DECORATION INGREDIENTS 4 cups (1 litre) ice cream 2 cups (70g) Froot Loops, crushed ½ cup (90g) rainbow sprinkles METHOD Working quickly, place a big scoop of ice cream on to a cookie and gently press another cookie on top. Repeat with the remaining cookies. Press the crushed Froot Loops or sprinkles on the sides of the sambos (or roll the sambos in the Froot Loops and sprinkles) and tuck in! DECORATING TIP I used chocolate, rainbow and vanilla ice cream, but you can use whatever flavour you like. The ice cream sambos are best enjoyed immediately or can be frozen for up to three days. She doesn’t get nervous. Ever. So when songstress Rachael Leahcar takes to the road for her unique stage show Colours of My Life the audience won’t rattle her in the slightest. “I can’t see them so I don’t know how many of them there are or what their facial expressions are,” she tells Brisbane News. “It’s a very special feeling, almost like I’m alone … like I’m in a bubble.” The 25-year-old, who shot to fame after appearing on the 2012 series of The Voice, lives with a degenerative eye condition and after losing 90 per cent of her vision is considered legally blind. But that’s never stopped her chasing her dreams and now she’s showcasing her journey with the tour, giving fans a real insight into her life. “The show is very special to me. “I feel that the world needs to know what it really takes to be a performer. “There is so much that goes on behind the scenes before, during and after a show and there is no success without hard work. “I want to share the best and worst of it. I also thought it was important to give insight into what life is like for me living with a disability, so that people will be more understanding and people with a disability will draw inspiration to chase their dreams.” The show incorporates classic melodies such as Edith Piaf’s La Vie En Rose, Rachael’s favourite song Somewhere

Over The Rainbow, as well as an “impersonations medley” in which Rachael mimics singers including Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Tom Jones and Marilyn Monroe. The music is illuminated by video and projections to help tell important parts of her story. “I remember my family always having the video camera going when I was little and growing up,” she says. “We thought it was important to capture special moments like birthdays, Christmases and even just being a bit silly. “Once I started singing and playing piano, the home videos filled up with performances. I am so lucky we did this because the stories, videos and songs I’ve chosen for the show are all authentic milestones, rewarding or challenging, which have shaped me into who I am today. I chose particular moments because I believe people will take something away from them, whether it’s a life lesson, or just a bit of enjoyment from nostalgia.” Rachael is also gearing up for a new release, her first album in two years, Together for Christmas. To add to the excitement, it is also her first festive record. “It is all cover songs, a mix of classic carols and modern Christmas hits. “I love Christmas for everything it represents.” Colours Of My Life, Metro Arts, Oct 11, 7.30pm metroarts.com.au

ARTS

Man of mystery Rick Amor knows how to conjure artistic intrigue, and the former war artist leaves it up to viewers to interpret his stories in paint Phil Brown I thought the cat looked cute but there was more to it than that. And I only know that because I got to chat to the artist himself, Melbourne painter Rick Amor. His current show at Philip Bacon Galleries is rich and intriguing. His figurative works are often narrative paintings with implied, sometimes mysterious stories behind them. But we don’t know what the stories are. The artist is loath to over explain ... or even to explain really. “People have their own ideas,” Rick says. “But as far as I’m concerned when a picture leaves the studio it’s on its own. You don’t want to have to explain it. It should communicate visually on its own terms.” Having said that he is still happy to chat, just a little bit, about The cat, the painting that intrigued me. It depicts a feline prowling near a beachfront just out of the shadow of a little copse. I thought it was whimsical but Rick explains that for him it carries more of V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

a sense of foreboding. It’s a childhood memory and in reality the cat scared him. He found it spooky. “I’ve always remembered that cat,” Rick says. “It frightened me.” Visions from childhood and other images swim up to the surface of his mind and then he responds by painting what he sees in his mind’s eye. With great skill. Amor is something of a painter’s painter and he has spent a lifetime painting, drawing, sculpting and printmaking. He’s pretty well in the master category now and is also in that small but significant club of former Official War Artists, a club that includes Ben Quilty, Donald Friend, Wendy Sharpe and Peter Churcher, to mention just a few. Rick was sent to East Timor at the behest of the Australian War Memorial in 1999. They only send artists of the highest calibre on those assignments. Amor doesn't make too much of a fuss about such things. He prefers to just get on

with his work and journey into his subconscious, mining the images and stories that result in his intriguing paintings. If you’re looking for a theme in this Brisbane exhibition you will be disappointed. “I never have themes,” Ricks says. “I just paint pictures.” So the subject matter in his current show is disparate. There are scenes of bucolic bliss, such as The bridge, a lovely country scene, as well as works that convey a sense of foreboding. Boat, for

example, shows a titanic old hulk in an almost post apocalyptic seascape with a forlorn figure in a high-vis vest approaching. Dark creek is a dreamlike littoral scene which may again be from childhood. There are 16 paintings in all, each interesting in its own way. Make of them what you will says Rick. That’s the idea. FILM

JOKER (MA15+) hhhhh Director Todd Phillips Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz Joaquin Phoenix isn’t so much an actor as a moral contortionist in this mesmerising origin story. His visceral, provocative and disturbingly empathetic performance bends the Joker into an unfamiliar new shape. Heath Ledger won an Oscar with the hand he had been dealt – as the supporting villain to Christian Bale’s Batman in The Dark Knight. But Phoenix, who lost 23.5kg for the role, is playing with a full deck – the young Bruce Wayne (Dante PereiraOlson) and his father Thomas (Brett Cullen) are merely bit players in this story. Arthur “Happy” Fleck (Phoenix) lives in a rundown apartment with his bedridden mother, to whom he is devoted. Suffering from a strange medical disorder, which causes him to laugh hysterically at awkward or inappropriate moments – the result is somewhere between a cackle and a howl – Fleck ekes out a basic living as a clown. In a society as dysfunctional as that of Gotham City, Fleck’s social awkwardness is a magnet for bullies. In Joker’s opening scene, a bunch of feral teenage boys first steal his sign, and then beat him to a pulp in an alley after he gives chase. (Tellingly, no passer-by intervenes.) This is echoed, sometime later, by a second incident in which Fleck is baited on the subway by three entitled City types (all of whom, it later transpires, work for Wayne). But, perhaps even more damaging are the smaller, everyday acts of unkindness Fleck experiences, such as the woman on the bus who tells him not to bother her

child when he makes faces to amuse the kid, who is staring at him. It’s a chilling illustration of what it might be like to live in a world without compassion. “The worst thing about having a mental illness,” Fleck writes in his admittedly unhinged journal, “is that people expect you to behave as if you don’t.” Fleck’s already precarious relationship with the world spirals further out of control when his hero, a TV talk show host (De Niro), ridicules the would-be stand-up comedian’s disastrous open-mike session on national TV. Either that incident, or his

mother’s long-kept secret, pushes him over the edge. A violent outcome is guaranteed by the Chekhovian gun, slipped to Fleck by an oily co-worker. There’s nothing particularly cartoonlike about director Todd Phillips’ (The Hangover) Gotham. His depiction of an alienated underclass struggling to stay afloat in a world driven by greed and selfinterest feels eerily topical. The similarities between Wayne, a selfmade businessman running for the mayoral office, and US President Donald Trump are obvious. And there are strong parallels

THE GOLDFINCH (M) hhkjj Director John Crowley Starring Ansel Elgort, Oakes Fegley, Nicole Kidman How do you condense a 780-page novel about grief, guilt and transgression into a coherent 2½-hour movie? Not like this. The film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel lacks the compulsive detail of its source material, and the shifts between the different time frames and geographical locations feel forced and clunky. The Goldfinch’s restructured narrative – here, the bombing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and its aftermath, is experienced as a series of aftershocks – feels appropriately cinematic. But the conventional framing device doesn’t have the immediacy of the novel, amplified by Tartt’s use of the first-person voice, and this does nothing to enhance Ansel Elgort’s performance as the grownup Theo Decker. Oakes Fegley fares a little better as the younger Theo, partly because he’s got more 16 BRISBANE NEWS October 2-8, 2019

to work with; his actions – or reactions – are what set the chain of events in motion. Miraculously, the young boy survives the catastrophic explosion with barely a scratch. But his mother never emerges from the rubble. Since his father is missing in action, Theo is taken in by the family of one of his schoolmates. Nicole Kidman’s wealthy matriarch dominates these scenes so completely,

you’d be excused for thinking The Goldfinch was her story. Adding emotional texture to Theo’s new life is an antique furniture restorer named Hobie (Jeffrey Wright) and the flamehaired girl (Aimee Lawrence) who was also at the gallery that day. These developing relationships are curtailed by the unexpected reappearance of Theo’s good-for-nothing father (Luke

between the angry riots in Gotham and recent anti-capitalist protests at the G7 summit in Biarritz. But what marks Joker apart from any other film in its genre is the seductive ambivalence of its central character’s metamorphosis. Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver plot Fleck’s journey from victim to aggressor with shocking precision. And Phoenix’s charismatic performance gives us a glimpse of what this toxic version of empowerment might feel like. Joker renders a term like “bad guy” manifestly inadequate.

Wilson) and his pill-popping new girlfriend (Sarah Paulson), who take the kid back with them to an unoccupied housing development on the edge of the Nevada desert. The only redeeming feature in this barren, dysfunctional landscape is Boris (Finn Wolfhard), the rule-breaking Russian émigré who befriends him. After another abrupt and violent change in circumstance, Theo escapes back to New York, and the film leaps forward several years, setting us up for the climactic end sequence alluded to in the opening scenes. Part coming-of-age drama, part crime thriller, The Goldfinch takes its name from the priceless painting Theo “rescues” from the bomb site in an impulsive act with irrevocable consequences. There are enough plot twists and turns to keep audiences distracted, but director John Crowley’s follow-up to the Oscarnominated Brooklyn fails to animate its source material. And for a film that clocks in at 149 minutes, many of the key moments feel oddly rushed. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

TRAVEL

Bay tripper Pristine waters and wildlife aplenty await at an island resort just a short cruise away from the city, writes Emma Schafer The pelicans of Tangalooma have it all figured out. They spend an enviable amount of time on the pristine beach waiting for an easy bite at feeding time then take off over the crystalline waters of Moreton Bay. The pelicans and I are birds of a feather. But lacking in the requisite avian anatomy, it’s parasailing I turn to for my sky time on a family weekend spent at Tangalooma Resort. Trust me, you haven’t truly seen the turquoise majesty of this spot until you’ve seen it from the air. With a bird’s-eye view of Moreton Bay and Island – a 75-minute catamaran cruise from Pinkenba in Brisbane’s north-east – the entire marine ecosystem is yours for a private viewing. Starfish, turtles, dolphins and, if you’re lucky, even whales and dugongs, are hard to miss when you’re hanging 150m up with 360-degree water views. And parasailing with the

Tangalooma crew is, quite literally, a breeze. You take off and land from the dry boat deck but can indulge in a lovely mid-parasail paddle if you’re keen for the crew to dip you low enough that your toes graze the sea. I’m keen. I’ve saved this activity until last, and for anyone visiting the island with intentions of fitting in as much adventure as daylight hours will allow, I’d recommend the same. Mere hours earlier I was squealing my way down a near-vertical sand dune at 40km/h with Miss Four clinging to my back rhesus monkeystyle. Yes, sand tobogganing is a timehonoured tradition at Tangalooma and a must-do, even if it’s just to check out the other-worldly “desert” at the heart of the sand island. The rest of our island time is spent getting extremely close and personal to the local wildlife. In the space of 24

hours my husband, Miss Four and I add four humpback whales, a couple of hundred fish, a handful of hungry kookaburras and a family pod of dolphins to what we start to refer to as our very own “Tangalooma tribe”. Bottlenose dolphin Tinkerbell usurps me as the matriarch when she cruises in to shore with her pod ready to be handfed at dusk. The 29-year-old just had her sixth calf and she eagerly accepts the few bonus fish that our eco ranger prompts us to hand over. Shortly after, and with the same fervour, we wolf down a szechuan dinner at the island’s dual-zoned Asian/Western restaurant, Fire & Stone. Then we flop into bed. All that in a weekend, and only a boat ride from home. Tangalooma Island Resort, Moreton Island, from $159 a night. tangalooma.com

Teenage dream Bold yet soothing, fun yet functional ... opposites really do attract when it comes to creating the perfect retreat for teenagers

D

esigning a teenager’s bedroom is no easy feat – by this age, they have developed their own sense of style and need a room that multi-tasks as a sleep, study and entertaining space. But, with a little imagination and effort, creating a room that ticks all the boxes is possible. Interior stylist Julia Green (right) tells us how. “Colour is your first step,” she says. “It’s the quickest and easiest way to breathe life into a room and will give you the foundation for a space your teen will love.” The original bedroom here was functional but uninspiring, with a green feature wall and very little colour elsewhere. “I loved the room’s architectural features and wanted to highlight them with paint,” Julia says. “I also wanted to ramp up the fun factor with some surprise colour hits and introduce texture and softness for a cosy, welcoming feel.” For inspiration, Julia looked to Dulux’s Identity palette images, one of four palettes that make up the 2019 Dulux Colour Forecast. “My starting point was a playful, modern artwork in a riot of blue, orange, yellow and black,” she says. “I hung it above the desk to create a focal point in the room and used the colours to inform the rest of the scheme. “As this is a bedroom and needs to work for quiet times too, I opted for a soft shade for the feature wall – Dulux Wash&Wear in Apricot Fool – and kept the adjoining 22 BRISBANE NEWS October 2-8, 2019

walls and trims that were already painted in a Dulux Wash&Wear Lexicon® Quarter for contrast. “I then introduced louder brights through smaller accents in the bedding, accessories and furniture.” As any parent knows, redecorating a child’s room can be expensive. “Keep the budget in check by upcycling existing pieces where you can – it only takes a few minutes to repaint old furniture and accessories in a fresh colour to give them a whole new look,” Julia says. “Here, I’ve painted the top of a plain

timber desk with Dulux Aquanamel in Italian Clay and the drawer in Red Clown; a section of the surfboard with Dulux Wash&Wear in Mitchell Blue; and the top of the bedside table with Dulux Aquanamel in Mondrian Blue, all of which provide pops of colour in the new scheme. “The bed is the centrepiece in a bedroom, so it was important to get it right,” she adds. “I added funky, retro-patterned bedding and a dramatic denim bedhead to frame the bed. Mismatched bedding is all the rage right now – and works brilliantly with

this playful look – so I laid the bed with sheets in contrasting colours and piled it high with cushions in different colours, shapes and textures. This also gives it a lounge-like feel, providing a spot for friends to sit when they come over.” Julia said: “When starting a project like this, my top tip is to get your teen involved from the start. “Teens have strong ideas about colour and trends, and you’ll want their new room to be a space they’ll love. “And be prepared to try something new – a child’s room, which is separated from V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

the main living areas of the home, is the perfect spot to be a little adventurous with colour.”

JULIA’S STYLING TIPS Use the colours in an artwork as the inspiration for your palette. And remember, statement bedding, or a rug, can act as artwork in a bedroom, too. For a fashionable, tonal effect, use the main wall colour in a different strength on one, two or three other elements in the room, such as a desk chair, shelves or a bedside table. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

A teenager’s room needs to multitask, so include a comfortable bed, a sturdy desk and chair for studying, somewhere to relax with their friends, and adequate storage. Give the bed an on-trend ‘undone’ look. Layer it with a duvet, sheets and pillow slips from different sets, and finish off with a medley of comfy cushions in a variety of colours and fabrics. Add a floor rug to anchor the scheme and provide softness underfoot. It should be big enough to connect with one or two pieces of furniture in the room, and not so

small that it gets lost in the space. Also include greenery – a beautiful trailing plant or two on the desk or shelves will bring nature into the room and help freshen the air.

LAST WORD

Phil Brown Teaching ratbags like us would have been challenging but Mr Kunkel got his own back by turning us into beasts of burden I had an email from my old Year 12 English teacher the other day. He had read something of mine and wrote to tell me he was pleased I was doing well. That was nice. His name is Peter Kunkel and I’m pleased to hear he is still with us. He was a fairly unforgettable figure at Miami State High School on the Gold Coast with his wild hair and unruly beard. We sometimes called him Rasputin. I recall how impressed I was when he gave us a Beatles song to study as poetry. It was She’s Leaving Home from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I thought that was cool. I was an aspiring writer then, churning out doggerel at home. I remember he really liked an essay I wrote, entitled I Was Happy

Here, and that encouraged me quite a bit. I remember one day when we got to his class there was a notice on the blackboard asking if anyone wanted to earn some pocket money doing some labouring work for him. My friend Glenn and I volunteered thinking it would be a doddle. When we turned up though we found that it was kind of major garden earthworks that involved a lot of digging and setting up of garden beds and such. It was summer and exceedingly hot that first day as we slaved away while Mr Kunkel watched, drinking Coca-Cola as he got over a hangover. He liked a cool drink on a hot day. We muttered to ourselves something about him being a lazy sod but actually he

was pretty smart using his students to do his work for him. I wonder now – was that even legal? His wife was a bit of a dragon lady, from memory, who hovered in the background. She barely noticed us, two gangly longhaired young surf rats toiling away while her husband watched on. All he really needed was a stock whip and the picture would have been complete. I think we spent a few Saturdays doing this and I’m pretty sure Mr Kunkel had a hangover every time we turned up. And he seemed to enjoy watching us working away like slaves in a scene from Spartacus. These memories came flooding back when I got that note from Mr Kunkel the

other day. He was one of the most memorable teachers from my teenage years. The most memorable actually. My other favourite was a very wry, dry bloke called Tom Strong who taught me Ancient History, my other favourite subject along with English. Mr Strong was either American or Canadian, I can’t quite recall which. I feel sorry for these guys. It mustn’t have been easy being a high school teacher, certainly not at Miami State High School, which could be a bit rough at times. Teaching ratbags like us would have been challenging but Mr Kunkel got his own back by turning us into beasts of burden. How funny.

Dr Yale Bennett says his wife fell instantly in love with the Victoria-era seven-bedroom home and has never stopped loving it. “During our 26 years here we have raised five happy and very successful children and several will be devastated to see us sell, as will my wife,” Yale says. Taking pride of place in the acreage property, the 1889 home has been fully-

Yale says the previous owners had been in the house for 50 years meaning it’s only changed hands twice in 76 years. The original homestead features three bedrooms, two sunrooms, a separate lounge, dining, library, office and a bathroom with vintage fixtures and large bathtub. Style of the Hamptons It started life as a typical three-bedroom Ascot Queenslander but a massive renovation has transformed Dobson Estate, into a five-bedroom Hamptons-style home. The house, which was bought by Zephyr Industries in October last year, has been raised, renovated and extended. Zephyr’s Brayden Larkin says the project involved “a lot of work” but it had paid off with the end result exactly what he had been hoping they would achieve. He says the Ascot address had been a big drawcard when they were looking for a project and the style and layout of the home had made it ideal for a makeover. “The home was built circa 1900 so everything in it was original, although it was run down,” Brayden says. “(Raising) it was a delicate job because there were two original chimneys upstairs and we wanted to ensure there was no damage done to them while we were raising the house.” The chimneys survived the raising unscathed and the two fireplaces, one marble from the 1900s, were reconditioned and are now in full operating order. Brayden says the carpenters ensured

that any materials needing to be replaced in the house matched the original so while the home had undergone a substantial makeover, it still retained most of its traditional feel. He designed the renovation and was pleased with the outcome which included modern additions including smart wiring which allowed the electronics to be controlled by a tablet. The home has an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area and European oak timber flooring.
