This week... Our annual Spring Issue is here, and with it a bounty of fashion, fresh inspiration for the home and a salad recipe from chef Alastair McLeod perfect for al fresco lunches with friends. Gardening stories go hand-in-hand with spring editions and when I charged journalist Emma Schafer with finding one, she more than delivered. In Ground force (P8), she spotlights George Arkinstall (right, standing, with brother Harry), the owner of Gardening A Difference. This business employs people on the autism spectrum or with mental health issues who might otherwise find it difficult to get a start on the job ladder. George is a humble hero and Emma’s story is a must-read.

S

ydney-born actor Madeleine (Maddy) Madden feels more like a Queenslander these days after spending most of 2018 filming in the Sunshine State. First there was the Netflix supernatural crime series Tidelands, shot on North Stradbroke Island and at Shorncliffe, and then she sealed a key role in the hotly anticipated Dora and the Lost City of Gold. The live action version of the cult children’s animated series, which opens in cinemas September 19, was mostly filmed at Village Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast. “I was on the set of Tidelands for five months and that was really exciting being part of the city, or in a rainforest, or a

tropical island or a desert,” Maddy, 22, says. “It was so special to shoot in some amazing locations and it was the same with Dora.” The young actor impressed a room full of US producers with her American accent to secure the prized role of Dora’s school friend, Sammy. “It was quite nerve-racking in the audition, sitting in a room full of Americans so I thought, ‘Here’s goes nothing’,” Maddy says. “I’m fortunate Hollywood has come to me. I’ve had dialect sessions and on set we’ve got a dialect coach and also a life mentor.” Not surprisingly Maddy, who is the daughter of Sydney art curator Hetti Perkins and the granddaughter of Aboriginal rights activist Charles Perkins,

got the job. Also a part-time model, Maddy has been acting since the age of eight and previously appeared in the mini-series Picnic at Hanging Rock (2018). She also has plans to direct, following in the footsteps of her aunt Rachel Perkins who directed Jasper Jones (2017). In Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Maddy plays Sammy, the class president who befriends Dora (Isabela Moner) who is struggling to settle into school after growing up in the jungle. Sammy joins Dora in a jungle adventure when Dora’s parents are kidnapped, and they must also solve the mystery behind a lost Inca civilisation. “Sammy is the complete opposite to me; she’s very ambitious at school,’’ Maddy says.

“During the movie it’s beautiful to see these people transform from being pigeonholed in high school, which can be a scarier place than the jungle.” The intelligent storyline and “genius” script impressed Maddy from the start. “The scene I read in my audition was sophisticated,” she says. “You are really delving into the kids’ identities and who they are.” Maddy says her character was not from the original Dora cartoon, which gave her creative freedom to explore Sammy. She particularly enjoyed the stunt work. “The wire work was pretty exciting,” Maddy says. “It’s been pretty awesome shooting on these incredible sets and on location.”

Ground force These northside brothers are sowing seeds of change with their gardening business Emma Schafer

HELPING HANDS ... Gardening A Difference’s Harry (left) and George Arkinstall. Picture: Russell Shakespeare/AAP

E

verybody needs a brother like George. Three years ago, the bighearted entrepreneur was a busy personal trainer. Business was brisk, money no issue, but he threw it all away to go into garden maintenance. George Arkinstall, now 24, didn’t do it for himself. He did it for his big brother Harry, 27, who is on the autism spectrum and was at the time struggling to find and keep a job. “I had a client at the gym who needed some yard work done, so I offered up mine

and Harry’s services. Then things just grew from there,” George says. The brothers had grown up sharing the gardening at their childhood home in Clayfield, where they lived with five other siblings and parents Jane and Robert, and reckoned they’d done a decent job of it. Fast forward to today and George’s leg-up for his brother has become the social enterprise, Gardening A Difference. It keeps the brothers busy up to six days a week and they’re helped along by a small band of gardeners who are all on the

autism spectrum or struggle with mental illness. On a rare day off, over coffee in a James St cafe, the Arkinstall brothers reveal that almost one-third of working-age Australians with autism are unemployed. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate for people with autism spectrum disorders was 31.6 per cent in 2015. That’s almost six times the rate of people without a disability (5.3 per cent). “Whether it’s autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or mental illness, I think employers

find it challenging to employ someone who might require a little more effort,” George says. “If they need to change a fluorescent light bulb in the office for someone with sensory triggers, it’s easier to just not hire that person. In the early days of Gardening A Difference I wasn’t thinking that big though. I just knew I could help Harry.” For the nine workers, a mix of men and women, who have spent time mowing, hedging, weeding and watering with Gardening A Difference, the job has been

life changing. It earned one the reference he needed to secure his dream mechanical apprenticeship with Tesla. For another, Mathew Townsend, it was a stepping stone to launching his own organisation, Nature Freedom, which takes young people with disabilities on outdoor adventures. Most employees only stay with Gardening A Difference for two to six months, all the while being encouraged by George to follow their passion beyond lawn work. And George refuses to take any

credit when they do. “I don’t feel pride for myself, but for them,” he says. “I believe they all had the potential to get to where they were going anyway and that’s what Gardening A Difference is about: looking for and boosting the positives in someone who is on the spectrum. “I honestly believe all businesses could easily adopt our business model. I see the unique benefits of working with people on the spectrum in such a tangible way in the garden. If I need someone to clean something up really well it’s one of the guys on the spectrum. They will do it better than me 10 times out of 10. They know detail.” Harry – who was diagnosed with highfunctioning ASD when he was seven – sits up a little straighter and chimes in. “We’re generally good at doing weeding,” he says. “I’ll go through the garden after George and get all the small bits he always misses.” George grins: “Harry makes sure it’s a really fine finish. The two of us together is better than either of us could do alone.” In June, he spoke about exactly this – the unique and mutually beneficial relationship between him and his workforce – as a guest speaker at the Asia Pacific Autism Conference in Singapore. He spoke about building resilience instead of removing hurdles. For example, Harry doesn’t always like speaking with clients, but in this line of work it can be unavoidable. George also opened up about his own struggles, another catalyst for the creation of Gardening A Difference. “Mental health is a big part of my story,” he starts. “When I was a teenager I was more concerned with fitting in than trying to discover who I am ... until I ended up in and out of mental health institutions for six months with depression and suicidality.” Despite what he says were the best efforts and overwhelming support of his teachers at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, George was expelled in Year 11.

“It was a difficult time, but without that I’d never be doing what I am today,” he says. George finished high school at Kelvin Grove State College. “Through all of that I learned that actions have consequences. Bad actions have bad consequences, sure, but that means you can also go forward in the world with good actions. “That led me down this path. I started helping Harry.” The brothers admit they haven’t always been close, but are great mates now. George and his girlfriend Hannah, 26, a nurse, have even invited Harry to move in with them at their Nundah home. From there they plan to expand Gardening A Difference to include other services. “Car cleaning, house cleaning, really anything that will offer structured employment,” George says. A straight-talking Harry readily admits he’ll be glad to get out of the gardens. “It’s good to have work and have money, but it’s annoying at some of the gardens,” he says. “The one garden I hate doing the most is on a slope and the lady has planted her plants all through the lawn. So instead of taking an hour to mow, it would take closer to two hours. Just plant your plants along the side in a garden bed!” George is grinning again, but he doesn’t speak up until his brother has said his piece. “She has an orchard,” he explains. “Harry is very logical and this job is teaching him that things can’t always be that way. There are always challenges, but that’s the whole point of our business. We want to face these rather than say, ‘It’s too much, we’ll hire someone else’.” Harry sums it up: “What I am unable to do, George is able to do.” “But he’s still my older brother,” George adds. “He’s still willing to say, ‘George, you need to be better here’, which is important.” Yes, everybody needs a brother like George. And one like Harry too.

Help at hand A locally-designed app delivers medicine to your door when you can’t get to the chemist Leesa Maher

I

t took a stressed-out dad to think of it. Ascot’s Adam Gilmore was waiting in line at the chemist, a sick and upset toddler in his arms, when the idea for Tonic – an app that delivers doctor’s scripts to your door – first came to him. “She was really sick and we’d taken her to the doctor,” Adam (left) recalls. “We went directly to the pharmacy but it took almost 30 minutes from arriving to leaving, by which time my daughter was beside herself. All we wanted to do was take her home to bed and comfort her, so delivery instantly made sense.”

A year later, in January 2018, Adam and his business partner Guy McKenzie launched Tonic, “a super simple” app that delivers medicine to your home in the same way Uber Eats brings a pizza or Thai takeaway. You just download the app, create an account, snap a photo of your scripts or browse for over-the-counter products, link your credit card and order the delivery for your preferred time and place. Delivery is $5 and you can track your parcel on the app’s live map until it arrives in its secure packaging.

Adam says customer feedback has been positive, with Tonic popular among busy mums, office workers, people with mobility issues – such as broken legs or for those recovering from eye surgery who physically cannot get to a pharmacy, and elderly people with chronic conditions. “There are many cases of sick kids who are at home with one parent, and by using Tonic their parents are then able to stay at home with them while Tonic does the legwork to get the medication needed without the hassle of getting the child to travel while they’re ill,” Adam, 33, says. “And there are people who avoid pharmacies due to anxiety. For example, we’ve had a customer from the transgender community who feels nervous going into a chemist to pick up their medication and instead turned to Tonic for delivery.” Adam and Guy have been working in the pharmacy/tech space for about a decade, having previously worked in data analytics, providing drug manufacturers, pharmacy groups and individual pharmacies with simple solutions to improve business profitability and efficiency. “This gave us the insight into what is important to patients and ultimately led to the concept of Tonic,” Adam says. “We’ve been growing month on month, which is very exciting. We’ve also recently partnered with House Call Doctor to allow after-hours doctors to prescribe medication directly to Tonic and let patients who are too sick to leave the house get medication brought directly to them.” Adam says Brisbane was the ideal place to launch his start-up and he is “incredibly inspired” by success stories coming out of Queensland. “Seeing businesses meet a real need that is not currently being met and doing it with love, passion and dedication is truly inspirational. Hearing our customers tell us how what we’re doing is improving their lives makes it all worthwhile.” tonicapp.com.au

LIFE

Alicia Pyke I’d rather people know I’m 43 than think I’m a 30-something in need of eye cream. I just didn’t want to wear glasses to read Apparently I’ve just been granted membership to a special club. A club whose esteemed members reach for a pair of spectacles every time they check their phone or casually view any one of the zillion things we have to read every day. Applications are automatically approved when you wake up one day in your 40s and realise your formerly excellent eyesight has abandoned you. I really didn’t want to join this club. Usually I’m not hung up about ageing at all. I’d rather people know I’m 43 than think I’m a 30-something in need of eye cream. I just didn’t want to admit I was up

to my eyeballs in the classic signs of age-related vision decline. Most of all, I didn’t want to wear glasses to read. Over the past couple of months I’d cranked up the font size on my laptop and outsourced eyebrow grooming to a professional. At uni I started taking handwritten notes in coloured pens since blue and red ink became easier to read than black. All up, it wasn’t too terrible. Except in a dimly lit restaurant where I’d hold the menu as far from my face as my arms would stretch and squint – anything to avoid using the torch light on my phone.

Then the headaches began. So I booked an eye test with a friend who is an optometrist. He’d last checked my eyes in 2008 and declared my vision excellent, almost 20:20. No, I didn’t understand exactly what that meant but I loved mentioning it when someone commented how lucky I was not to need glasses. As the years went on, I felt increasingly smug about being frame-free. One of my younger sisters has been wearing specs for years and my husband picked up his first pair last December. That was the point when I hit peak

FREE

smug. Guy and I are almost exactly the same age and had been oddly competitive about who would need reading glasses first. Yes, he did look especially dishy in his British designer specs but I’d won: he wore glasses and I didn’t. Truthfully, I should have had my eyes tested the very next day. Instead, I held out another nine months, just to make my win more convincing. My prize? A much stronger lens prescription that caused our optometrist to reflect how much worse my eyes are than Guy’s. In this case, hindsight is definitely not 20:20.

hen it comes to Chinese food I consume more than most, thanks to some very good friends – food addicts the lot of them – from the Chinese community. And with their guidance I have eaten a thousand great dishes across a couple of decades, in both Brisbane and Hong Kong. I’m a convert, but no expert. And I’ve been thrilled with the rapid expansion of Chinese food in Brisbane that has taken it from the fast-paced, delicious but often grimy tables of Chinatown and Sunnybank, to places a little more glamorous – Donna Chang and the irrepressible Little Valley. But are they Chinese joints for caucasians? Probably. When it comes to the culinary fineprint there’s a philosophical gulf between the two cultures. Then, to stir my curiosity, along comes Phoenix in the ghost-town luxe of the Brisbane Quarter, right across the corridor from the impeccable Persone, but without the stellar views. In fact sitting here is something like waiting for the lifts at the back of Myer – white walls, no life. We are peering at a future view of our Barrier Reef. Inside is grey and black highlighted by peach lanterns. It’s nice, and there is a bevy of staff, all cheery, smartly dressed and eager to please. We settle in with a couple of Tsingtao – not the best beer on the planet, but if I’m eating Chinese I find it kind of obligatory. Then three dishes from the yum-cha menu – crab xiao long bao ($16); scallop and caviar shumai ($12); king prawn and goji-berry cheung fan ($12). And here is where I cross the boundaries between knowledge and experience, but I’ll do it regardless. There is much better dim sum in town. Best is the shumai – tasting of fresh scallop, laden with tiny roe, pliant pastry ... very good. The long bao is short on soup (which is kind of like Uluru being short on rock) and anonymous ... not reeking of crab. And the cheung fan is let down by big, fleshy, almost good but flavourless king prawns. A good prawn – sweet and laden –

would make this dish great. Which it almost is, but isn’t. Duck is better – it’s “pipa”, which is by definition mostly wellworked, crispy skin and a skerrick of meat. And this is a good rendition – caramelised, rich and bearing a slight crunch ($32). Then there’s eggplant with minced pork in spicy sauce ($26). This is a Sichuan dish, so a little Sichuan pepper would be nice, but not obligatory. But chilli heat is. Even though I request it hot, there is only a smattering of bird’s eye in the mix, and there’s a suspiciously familiar taste in the foundations of the dish. Could it be sweet chilli sauce? Oh dear. Phoenix had me in its grasp – I was excited, expectant, eager. But I left deflated. The food is good, but truthfully no better than can be found at a dozen restaurants in Chinatown and well short of Brisbane’s two glamour restaurants. I hope it succeeds, I hope it excels, but I wonder if it has all been dumbed down to meet the myth of a bland-seeking Australian audience.

RECIPE

Taste trifecta Chef contributor Alastair McLeod reveals the versatility of an aniseed-flavoured fave Fennel has three distinct lives; the first is the vibrant, verdant frond with a Mediterranean vibe of Pastis or Ricard – great in risotto, mashed potato or a vinaigrette. The second life is the first thick layer of the bulb, which has fabulous flavour but is not particularly tender. When presented with this, I chop it coarsely and cook it slowly as a relish/confit punctuated with anchovy and orange juice. The third life is the firm white bulb, which can be enjoyed roasted, grilled or raw. Be sure to use the cylindrical stems and core of the fennel bulb. There’s no need for any attrition. Just slice thinly for a happy life. Alastair McLeod is chef-owner of Al’FreshCo. alfreshco.com.au Styling and photography: Miranda Porter Props; instagram.com/lunaceramics; cultivatedesignco.com.au

A

n art exhibition that comes with a warning always adds a bit of extra interest. But then again I guess an exhibition that explores the push and pull of “seductive and repellent images” is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea and there are signs to that effect. So if you’re offended by certain orifices or appendages The Abyss, which is now showing at Griffith University Art Museum, may not be for you. Having said that it’s not too in-your-face and there is a lot to like. Exhibition curator Naomi Evans has assembled a pretty starry list of artists including some leading Queenslanders. There’s Tony Albert, Gordon Hookey, the late Gordon Bennett, Jemima Wyman and a string of other notables including Swiss-German subversive conceptual artist Dieter Roth and Juan Davila, who is known for his confronting work. His defilement of Mary in Holy Family will titillate some viewers and horrify others. To have the mother of Christ cradling a giant male organ is a bridge too far for me but hey, I’m Catholic and I don’t

happen to care for porn in my art and there are a few works in this show that veer into that territory. Better, for me at least, to concentrate on what I like and Gordon Hookey is top of my hit parade in that regard. Hookey is a member of the influential indigenous art collective ProppaNOW and he is adept at creating engaging images that always have some sort of strong social commentary. Sure he pushes the envelope at times but why not? In this exhibition his Payback Painting features two stories of retribution. The star of the painting is an anthropomorphised crocodile as artist in a studio reminiscent of van Gogh’s bedroom at Arles. A man lies dead on the floor and he appears to have been speared (by the crocodile?) and I’m guessing this is some kind of payback for colonialism. Hookey explains that “in our traditions, or some of our traditions, if you do wrong by someone you have to pay consequences”. The work was created during John Howard’s prime ministership but we can’t be quite sure if that’s

him lying speared on the floor. Like I said, some of the art in this show is confronting. In her catalogue essay, Evans says that it “gathers a polyphony of artistic approaches that privilege ways of working that lead us into spaces of the unresolved and unreconciled”. “The artists in this exhibition all employ strategies to generate schisms in the psyche” she writes and goes on to say that “they draw us close to reveal ideas from which we might want to recoil.” I didn’t do that much recoiling and besides, sometimes even the macabre can be interesting. Like the severed hand in a glove by Karl Fritsch and Francis Upritchard. The fingers are bejewelled and it made me think of Michael Jackson’s gloved mitt. It’s called Give me four and is quite intriguing. But some works are more on the revolting side frankly. Give me intriguing any day. COMICALLY FLAT … Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy and Tiffany Haddish play desperate mobster wives in the film adaptation of the comic book series The Kitchen.

THE KITCHEN (MA15+) hkjjj Director Andrea Berloff Starring Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss, Tiffany Haddish Running time 103 minutes There’s not much heat in The Kitchen, but it still manages to burn a strong ensemble cast. Set on the West Side of Manhattan in the late ’70s – where Irish immigrants wielded the muscle and African-Americans wore the bell bottoms – the female-driven crime drama tells the story of three mobsters’ wives who struggle to pay the rent after their husbands are jailed for a liquor store robbery. The new crime boss, Little Jackie (Myk Watford), has promised to look after them, but their weekly envelopes contain little more than spare change. In desperation, the women “go all Gloria Steinem” on him, setting up a rival protection racket. Devoted wife and mother Kathy Brennan (McCarthy) uses her impressive organisational skills to win over the Hell’s Kitchen business owners. Outsider Ruby O’Carroll (Haddish) has the sass and snarl necessary to drive the operation from behind the scenes. Feminist reawakenings come in all shapes and sizes. When Claire Walsh (Moss), who has been abused for her entire married life, finally snaps, she gets in touch with her inner psychopath (there are shades, here, of Moss’s much more affecting performance as June Osborne in The Handmaid’s Tale). Not only does this victim-turned-hit woman have no compunction about killing another human being, she is fascinated by the ensuing process of dismembering and disposing of the corpse (painstakingly explained to her by Domhnall Gleeson’s love-struck assassin). Walsh’s new-found talents come in especially handy when the menfolk get an early release from prison.

Adding a wildcard to the proceedings is an Italian crime boss (Bill Camp) from Brooklyn who is so impressed by the way the women have handled themselves, he suggests a lucrative construction partnership that will benefit both communities. A full-on gang war ensues. As family member betrays family member, and the death toll mounts, the whole operation threatens to unravel. All of which might have provided rich material for a modern, feminist reworking of classic genre tropes, in the tradition of Steve McQueen’s groundbreaking heist movie Widows. But first-time director Andrea Berloff’s tone-deaf adaptation of the Vertigo comic book series of the same name falls extraordinarily flat. Nothing about these characters, their relationships with one another, or the world they inhabit feels authentic. The film’s message is similarly forced. Towards the end of The Kitchen, Brennan tells her father that, after a lifetime spent pleasing other people, she finally feels safe. By this point, the vast majority of the new mob boss’s cronies have met with a violent end. No matter which way you spin it, her sense of female empowerment is false. VICKY ROACH

AT HOME OPEN SEASON ... Easy access to balconies gives the interiors a spacious feel, while striking colour combinations pack a punch throughout the two-bedroom abode.

S Go with the flow A little designer know-how has made life a breeze in this inner city apartment Tonya Turner

22 BRISBANE NEWS September 4-10, 2019

even years have passed since interior designer Claire Stevens moved into this two-bedroom apartment with her husband Hamish and spoodle, George. “We are very lucky with how much natural light and airflow we have in our apartment so it never feels stuffy or small,” she says of the New Farm abode. “All of the indoor spaces open up on to balconies, which is very unique. However the best thing is we are still private and do not look into anyone else’s home.” With plans to stay put for another five years, Claire decided to apply her design skills to a renovation that made maximum use of the space available to keep them happy and comfortable. “I think by that stage we will be ready to move on to something a little bit larger, but we love our location and neighbourhood so we weren’t ready to commit to moving. The existing layout had its flaws and we really needed more storage space in the kitchen and for everyday items. I knew the potential that the space had, and with some clever planning we could really make some large changes without any additional floor space,” she says. The kitchen was the driving force, and the main challenge was coming up with a solution that wouldn’t require major construction efforts such as scaffolding to finish off external walls. Claire also had to make sure the renovation addressed all of their storage issues and predetermine any additional requirements to ensure the end result would be a beautiful kitchen to work in and a well thought-out home. By reclaiming 5sq m from the external balconies, Claire was able to create a much larger and more functional kitchen and solve airflow issues at the same time. “Before, we were prone to large gusty winds that meant we couldn’t have the doors open. By breaking up these wind tunnels through the balconies, we are now able to control the airflow much more throughout the house and always have a lovely cool breeze in summer,” she says. The floorplan redesign also allowed Claire to create a more prominent entry to the apartment, which they didn’t have before. “It is those small elements that really make the space feel more homely,” she says. “Having a home that suits your needs with adaptable spaces is a great way of living. I love the idea of being able to use

V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

every room and not having too many empty or occasional spaces for the sake of owning a large home.” To bring a little more greenery into the apartment, Claire engaged Tom Brooks from The Small Garden to create a big impact on the balconies with large-scale pots. “Greenery was very important to us to soften the balcony spaces and to create a much more layered space,” she says. Since moving into the apartment, Claire has been building her and Hamish’s collection of Australian art, with their

V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

latest acquisition an abstract painting by Todd Hunter. “In my line of work we are very lucky to be exposed to some beautiful furniture, objects and art. What I love about art is that it never really dates. “If you love the work, it is something that you can move with and change around from time to time to instantly change the look of the space,” she says. Although living in a larger home has its perks, Claire is happy where she is for now. “Apartment living currently suits our lifestyle as we both work a lot and are away on the weekends.

“I think our dream home would be something with a little more green space, but still private and not overly large,” she says. For Claire, one of the best things about apartment living is having more time to focus on doing the things she loves. “It’s the convenience and the fundamentals of everything having a place. It’s a very easy place to maintain and have looking great, [while] doing very little work,” she says.

STYLING 101 “By creating a simple canvas of good quality and timeless furniture you can easily change the way a space looks by changing around cushions and artwork. I also believe in buying good quality key pieces that become a staple in your home, which you can pair back with other pieces that you can spend a little bit less on.” Claire Stevens clairestevensid.com.au

LAST WORD

Phil Brown I got to cover all the big social events in Brisbane and in 1987 that was pretty slim pickings. I’ve never really enjoyed the social whirl It’s hard to believe that I was once a social writer. There’s nothing sociable about me. It happened back in the mid-1980s when I was working freelance on the Gold Coast. Fashionable Mode Magazine was looking for a Queensland stringer and I put myself forward and soon I found myself going to all the big swish events on the Gold Coast. It was hideous really but I did it for a very good reason. Money. I teamed up with a couple of photographers and we would descend on these functions, snap all the beautiful people (as well as the over-tanned, wizened old wealthy ones) and depart. When I came to Brisbane and went to work at The Daily Sun I thought my social

writing days were over but pretty soon after starting I got tapped on the shoulder to be that tabloid’s daily columnist, which meant I was back on the social round, again. So I got to cover all the big social events in Brisbane and in 1987 that was pretty slim pickings. I’ve never really enjoyed the social whirl. In those days though I still liked a drink and that helped make it all bearable. I stopped drinking shortly after I left The Daily Sun though and let me tell you that without a few libations the social whirl was even more excruciating. I ended up in Sydney a year or so later and after working for a magazine company briefly I got another job in newspapers, at The Sunday Telegraph where they asked me

to be – yes you guessed it – their social columnist. So began several months of torture covering the shallow, glitzy social life of Sydney. Most nights I was somewhere in the Eastern Suburbs although occasionally there would be something in the Lower North Shore. I ended up at Bronwyn Bishop’s house one night at a function in honour of the late great Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, who was still alive at the time. Well, he was there. That job was unbearable too and came to a climactic end the night I went to cover a ritzy perfume launch that started at David Jones before going on to a dinner at an undisclosed location. Turns out it was

the restaurant at the top of the Centrepoint Tower (now the Sydney Tower) and that was a terrifying proposition for someone who doesn’t like heights. Like a lamb to the slaughter I was taken to the lifts and rocketed to the top where I sat gripping the edge of the table. I was white as a sheet and while everyone else chatted and laughed and clinked champagne glasses I sipped my lemonade and stared straight ahead. I got through the entree, excused myself saying I needed to go to the loo, and escaped via the lift, which was in itself a terrifying ride, plummeting to earth. I resigned the next day. Thus endeth my career as a social writer. Amen!
