This week... In search of winter sunshine, we kick up our heels this week on the sandy beaches of Lady Elliot, Heron and Daydream islands (P8). Writers Cassandra Houghton, Brian Crisp and Chantay Logan discover paradise – and adventure – on our doorstep and report on the natural world’s power to soothe the mind. It’s a thread that also runs through Kara Rosenlund’s vivid account (P24) of her time on Tasmania’s Satellite Island. The Brisbane-based travel photographer first visited the remote spot five years ago while shooting her book, Shelter, and has just made a return visit, this time en famille (pictured on our cover). For happy holiday inspiration, we’ve got you covered.

Life’s rich pageant
DRIVING FORCE … Pageant queen Angi Butcher is taking a stand against bullying. Picture: Jill Kerswill
Angi Butcher’s pin-up career is an inspiration to others who don’t fit the traditional mould
A
ngi Butcher was always a bit different. As a child growing up in Brisbane’s northern suburb of Zillmere, she was a tomboy who liked tinkering with cars alongside her dad and brother. She grew into a teenager who dressed in black and watched horror films of the post-punk gothic subculture. Shy and awkward, Angi became a target for schoolyard bullies. “I dropped out of high school because of bullying,” she says. “I just didn’t seem to fit in, but it was really all about a lack of confidence.” It was a photograph, taken in 2005, that changed the course of Angi’s life and led to the birth of her pin-up pageant alter-ego, Bettie Butcher. “My dad was a panel beater, so I grew up around cars and motorbikes and used to go to car shows and swap meets all the time,” she says. “It was at GreazeFest – the biggest hot rod and rockabilly show in the southern
hemisphere – that I had my photo taken next to a pick-up truck. That photo ended up being published in a national magazine and that gave me a huge boost of confidence in myself.” With no pin-up pageants to enter back then, Angi competed in the national Miss Ink Australia contest for women with tattoos and, to her amazement, won first prize. She used the title as an opportunity to start staging pin-up pageants for women who, like her, did not fit the traditional mould. “That was when Bettie Butcher really blossomed,” she says. “Bettie is a modern pin-up girl who rides motorbikes, has tattoos and a blonde streak through her hair. “The pageants were a way to empower women who, like myself, once didn’t have the confidence or feel worthy enough to be on stage.” These days, Angi travels the country hosting pin-up pageants with “vintage vibes, not vintage values”.
Her next pageant will be part of BaconFest, a three-day festival that showcases the food and farmers of the South Burnett region. While the competition to win the title of Miss BaconFest 2019 will be a tussle of hair, make-up and retro fashion, Angie says there will also be a more serious component to the pageant. “I’ve recently been the target of online bullying about the way I look, and it reminded me of how harmful bullying can be,” she says. In response, Angi will be selling Bettie Butcher antibullying T-shirts at BaconFest and will donate all money raised to Dolly’s Dream, a charity set up in memory of 14year-old Amy Dolly Everett, who took her own life after being bullied. Wide blue yonder Need a break? Get back to nature on Queensland’s islands, where lush forests and azure waters harbour a breathtaking array of creatures
Daydream Island There’s something about a welcome shell necklace that really says, “Hey, you’re on holidays”. The wharf at Daydream Island, with its green palms, salty-air humidity and impossibly-clear seawater, is idyllic too, but it’s this personal gesture that transports me firmly to the Whitsundays. And what a place to land. It’s only 1km long, this jewel of an island in the Great Barrier Reef, with coral and sand beaches, a tropical rainforest and its own “living reef”. Following the devastation of Cyclone Debbie two years ago, Daydream Island Resort underwent a $140 million renovation and reopened in June. Dusk is falling and my deluxe ocean view room beckons, but after a breezy check-in at the Atrium, I’m eager to explore. First stop: the Living Reef. Holding 1.5 million litres of water bursting with fish, baby stingrays, coral and starfish, this man-made lagoon wraps around the resort’s central building. There are shallow spots to trail a finger and an observatory room for floor-to-ceiling underwater viewing. For those inclined, the resort also offers an immersive guided

snorkel experience and a stingray splash. Nice touch. Beyond three palm-fringed pools (one with a swim-up bar), there’s a beach and … sudden movement. Wallaroos, eight of them, chew grass against the setting sun, nonplussed by the human. Instagram, eat your heart out. There’s more wildlife on my waterfront balcony too, with a sociable cockatoo duo. Two become 10 rather quickly (there must be a secret signal for friendly resort guests). Back inside, the rainfall showerhead offers a welcome retreat with its Aussiemade, eco-friendly Biology toiletries.
Then it’s a Chinese cuisine buffet by the reef at Graze – one of three stellar restaurants on the island, followed by a deep sleep in the king bed. Bliss. The next morning finds me bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and ready to explore. The Whitsundays is a group of 74 islands, and it makes sense, if you’re up here, to visit more than one. Cruise Whitsundays offers tours to Whitehaven Beach, a 7km stretch of brilliant silica sand on Whitsunday Island, which also boasts emerald-green rainforest and an azure coastline. It’s worth the trip. The boat docks right up on the beach, and nothing can prepare you for the splendour of this pristine spot that has won oodles of awards. Opt for stand-up paddleboarding and water trampolining, or sunbathe, swim, repeat. Back on Daydream, I’m just in time for G&T o’clock. Did I mention the island has a specialty gin bar? Spanning indoors from the Atrium out towards the Living Reef, Tonic Bar’s signature inkflower gin cocktail is a magical mix of Ink Gin, elderflower liqueur, cucumber, lime and soda. Nothing beats sipping one of these while overlooking a reef, pools, and the Pacific. While there, I flick through the menu at Inkstone Kitchen and Bar – which specialises in modern Australian steak and seafood – and decide on the sublime-sounding seafood indulgence for dinner later on. But to earn it, some exercise is in order and there are two island lookouts I want to see. First, I follow the signs to Lover’s Cove where a timber boardwalk descends down, down, until your shoes make music on a tiny white coral beach. The clinking, tinkling underfoot sounds like chimes on a beach shack balcony. Then – look up. Water so clear you can see the odd fish darting, ancient boulders, rainforest, and an expanse of yachts and Whitsunday islands. Two wallaroos watch me take it all in. The second spot requires a slight uptake in your heart rate (it’s worth it, I promise). It’s a 20-minute wander through rainforest to reach the top of the island with its panoramic views. And it’s so quiet. If it’s tranquillity you’re seeking, you’ll find it here, at the top of this small, lush island, in the heart of a world wonder. The loggerhead turtle lifts its head, looks me in the eye, and instantly knows it has the situation under control SPLASH ZONE … Get up close and personal with sea life, including a green sea turtle, in the waters off Lady Elliot Island.
Lady Elliot Island The loggerhead turtle lifts its head, looks me in the eye, and instantly knows it has the situation under control. Loggerheads are the rugby front row forwards of the ocean. They are big, powerful and sometimes weigh in at more than 400kg. And in the protected green zone waters off Queensland’s Lady Elliot Island they are in their safety zone. They are the boss. With its yellow-brown skin and reddish shell, the loggerhead is one of three species of sea turtles that call Lady Elliot Island, the southernmost coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef, home. The others are the hawksbill and green turtles. The loggerheads and green turtles both nest on Lady Elliot Island from November to January with their hatchlings making the life-or-death dash to the warm and inviting Queensland waters from February to April. Nearby Mon Repos is the nesting ground for mother turtles and if you’re there between January and March you may bear witness to the tiny hatchlings as they make their first flips towards the shore. Lady Elliot Island lies about 85km north-east off the coast of Bundaberg. Brisbane day trippers can fly there from

Redcliffe or the Gold Coast. You can also stay at the three-star eco resort which exudes the charm and simplicity of earlier times. Make no mistake – that’s not a criticism. The resort has everything a traveller needs – breathtaking views, the reef on your doorstep, unspoilt pristine beauty – and its eco-credentials make it a sustainable and enriching way to spend a weekend escape or short getaway. This sanctuary is home to 1200 species of marine life; each as unique as the one before it. I speak to a couple of guests who have travelled from the inner-city Sydney suburb of Marrickville to Lady Elliot Island six times in the past 20 years. They book for a week each time. “We arrive feeling stressed. We leave without a care in the world,” they say. Nature does that to you. It washes away the angst of everyday life, recharges your batteries, and focuses your attention on the good things in life. And you don’t get much closer to nature than when you stay in one of the beachside cottages, with a choir of birds entertaining you, turtles nesting just metres from your door, whales passing by the window from July to November, and manta rays. Who could forget the manta rays!
Lady Elliot Island is known as the “home of the manta ray”. You can see them year-round, but the numbers really swell in winter. It’s hard to miss a manta ray – some have wing spans of up to 7m. It’s never too cold to swim here. I am visiting in late April and the water temperature is a cosy 26C as we don flippers and goggles and leap from the side of our glass-bottomed boat, about 50m off the shoreline. On the surface, with the sun’s rays dancing through the clouds, the water looks like a blue margarita and I can taste the salt in the air. It is only when I am submerged though that the true beauty reveals itself. About 50 big-eye trevally circle below me. Turtles cruise past or sleep peacefully on the ocean floor. Thousands of fish – anemones, humbugs, wrasse and scissortail sergeants – swim by to say hello, or perhaps it is the local neighbourhood watch on patrol. There is even a reef shark, napping. We startle her. She startles us. We go our separate ways. It truly is nature’s own aquarium (without the glass). Heron Island Shark! It’s a cry that usually sends swimmers scuttling for the safety of sand, but it has the opposite effect on Heron Island. Alerted by a helpful passer-by on the jetty, my partner and I make a beeline for the lemon shark cruising close to the shore. Masks muffle involuntary exclamations as we come eyeball to eyeball with the ocean’s apex predator. Or, at least, one of his less newsworthy relatives. There’s a surge of adrenaline, but it’s not the heart-pounding, pulse-raising terror of repute. Emboldened by our shark’s approachable proportions and obvious indifference to his ungainly entourage, we swim alongside, awed by the sheer grace as our guide glides through a maze of coral. This is not your baited, contrived cage set-up, but something entirely more organic and accessible. Heron Island, a dot in the ocean 80km off the coast of Gladstone, specialises in this kind of encounter. It’s why David Attenborough described the reef as “the most magical thing” he’d ever seen, and the BBC revisited the coral cay to film Blue Planet Live. In the most biodiverse place on the planet, pinch-me moments come thick and fast. Retreating tides create knee-deep fishbowls where black-tip reef and lemon sharks slice through the shallows, shovel nose rays rest on the sand and clouds of fish sparkle silver in the sunlight. If your sights are set further than you can flipper, you can book a spot on one of the daily paid dive and snorkel tours, but on my many visits to the island I’ve found independent investigation every bit as rewarding. Launch yourself straight off the beach – the revolving cast of characters circulating steps from the sand ensures every dip is different. A cyclone toying with the Queensland coastline days before our visit whipped up seas of milky sediment soup, but the water soon settles into a more characteristic calm. As the weather stabilises and the wind drops in the lead-up to the cooler months, visitors experience even better visibility, along with the chance to spot migrating humpback whales. Sea turtles are Heron’s headline act and you can join the after-dark patrol to see

greens and loggerheads laying from October to March and their offspring motoring down the sand from January. Mature turtles are in the water yearround and a sunrise stroll to the jetty or snorkel from the gantry usually delivers in spades. Expect close encounters of the bird kind too. Pisonia trees bow under the weight of white-capped noddies, youngsters propped on haphazard nests; plucky banded rails snatch the garnish from unguarded cocktails; and the ghostly wail of shearwaters will have you jumping at night-time shadows. It’s live and it’s loud; an Attenborough doco playing out on your
doorstep … or even closer if you forget to shut the windows. Brooke Falvey While Australia has some strange names … some of my favourites belong to UK babies: Sayton (pronounced Satan) and LeSanya (lasagne) This may be controversial, but I’m going to say it anyway because it’s something I feel very passionate about. Please, please stop giving your children weird made-up names. Or, even worse, a good name spelt in a bad way. Throwing a bunch of random letters together will not make your child special or unique, although I’m sure it will be character building. Just ask baby Khai-Leigh (Kylie). Ever since Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin named their daughter Apple back in 2004, there’s been a spike in unusual baby names. Jay-Z and Beyonce have Blue Ivy; Cardi B has Kulture Kiari; and how
could anyone forget the Kardashians – North, Saint, Chicago, Psalm, Reign, Dream and Stormi. Clearly Scott Disick, the former partner of Kourtney Kardashian, was in charge of naming Mason and Penelope. Although Uma Thurman takes the cake after naming her daughter Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence. Not surprisingly, she goes by Luna. I don’t know about you, but whenever I was in trouble, my mum would yell my first and middle names. Brooke Michelle. It was a two-word warning signal. Uma clearly didn’t give enough thought to how long it would take to call out all
TALK TO THE RETAINING WALL EXPERTS PIONEER HEAVY DUTY CONCRETE SLEEPER RETAINING WALL SYSTEM
those names when her daughter was up to no good. Speaking from experience, I’d say those extra three names will buy Luna just enough time to run away. Once a privilege of celebrity, now every third person is giving their kids a wacky name. To hell with the fact their offspring will spend the rest of their life spelling it for people. While Australia has some strange names floating around, some of my favourites belong to babies in the UK. Consider, if you will, Sayton (pronounced Satan) and LeSanya (pronounced lasagne). What are the chances they toasted her birth with some garlic bread and a nice
house chianti? Taking things to the other extreme, in Iceland, parents have to stick to a limited list of names and, if they want to deviate from that list, they have to apply to the Icelandic Naming Committee. Another condition for approval is that the name shouldn’t embarrass the child, and this is where I think Australia needs to follow suit. In fact, I’ll even put my hand up to be the first Minister for Names. I’m sure babies Bon-Quisha, Aquamarine-Melody, Luv, Nivea, Ginkgo, and Chlamydia (her mum thought the word ‘looked pretty’) will support my proposal.

JOY Bakery Lane, 690 Ann St, Fortitude Valley joyrestaurant.com.au Chefs: Sarah and Tim Scott Dinner, Thu-Sun Vegetarian and coeliac options Eftpos and major credit cards Off street paid parking SCORES OUT OF 10 Food: 8.5 Drinks: 8 Vibe: 8.5 Service: 9 DINNER THEATRE… Joy co-owner, chef and host Sarah Scott cooks and serves; and (right) the luminous zucchini/confit squid/fragrant herbs dish.
Sparks joy This Valley gem seats just 10 but what it lacks in floor space it more than makes up for in flavour RESTAURANT Tony Harper Joy, despite all the media hoo-hah, and despite the expectation that comes with the need to book nearly a month out, is an unexpected experience. Even if you are expecting the unexpected. It’s tiny – a mere ten seats all facing the works in progress – kind of like Anise in New Farm only more succinct. Smaller, if you can believe it. And the wooing begins early, when you make that booking for a month’s time. There’s a text to confirm,
another to check on dietary stuff, and another a day or two before you land. All personable, warm and fuzzy. Then you are greeted as you walk in the door by the only two folk in the whole shebang, which is a nice touch. You need to be there on time – it’s like a dinner party for five couples with hosts you’ve never met and fellow diners you don’t know. There’s a 150-minute window in which you all partake of the same menu (more or less) and watch it materialise in ten-plate lots right in front of you. That’s the theatre. The drinks list is tiny and it hugs the
menu like a lamprey. There are two sakes on offer, yet only one beer. Odd? Not really ... there’s a strong Japanese bent to the whole experience. Then a few interesting wines – six whites, four reds, a rose and a sparkling (all a bit on the hobbit-like side of things; some organic, some pretenders and some – such as Melsheimer Trocken Riesling – biodynamic and perfectly suited), two Japanese whiskies, and that’s it. You can have the short menu – it’s a mere $75 for seven courses and another $55 with matching wines; or the long menu which is $110 for 10 courses plus $88 for drinks. It’s all pretty good value, and the food is very, very good, which kind of makes the value perplexing. Things begin with a glass of green tea and a bowl of chawanmushi – a savoury egg-custard with shaved truffle, enokitake mushrooms and quinoa. The truffle is piled on like some wild afro and the whole dish is umami-laden, gentle, with a contrast of textures. It’s wild. Probably the best of the
set. Then strips of cured scallops with jicama (a not-at-all-bitter, turnip-like tuber), dashi, kohlrabi and – somewhere in the mix – raspberry. Perhaps that’s the dust? It’s thought provoking ... good. Then an almost luminous green dish of zucchini and squid, followed by two perfectly cooked rectangles of Kobe wagyu with roasted cabbage and wasabi leaves – rich, bitter, hints of sweetness, spice in the leaves. There’s a palate cleanser followed by Joy Mont Blanc – a dessert, with a truffle option for an extra $15. Again it is an afro’s-worth. I love this sort of food experience; the expectation, the rollercoaster ride of dishes being plated up in situ, and each one a mystery, far beyond steak and chips, margarita pizza, anything familiar. These guys are starting with a blank page. But the joy of Joy is more than food. It’s the whole micro-setting and personable coddling. It’s the adventure.

RECIPE
Bitter sweet A balanced symphony requires more than flavour to sing, says Alastair McLeod Our tongue only tastes five things: sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami. It’s our sense of smell that makes sense of everything else. A great dish will always achieve a balance of “tastes”, whereas the decision to use rosemary or lemongrass in a casserole will not be crucial to its success; rather, it will lend a different fragrance and culinary direction. Creating balance between sweet and sour is one that crosses cultures. The French call it aigre-doux, the Italians agrodolce and the Spanish agridulce. The juxtaposition dances on our palates and makes us want to go back for the next mouthful. How sweet is that?
SWEET AND SOUR ALBACORE INGREDIENTS 2½tbs extra virgin olive oil 1 large red onion, peeled and sliced in thin rings 100ml sherry vinegar 2tbs raisins, submerged in hot water briefly then drained on kitchen paper 125g small heritage tomatoes, thinly sliced 16 green olives, halved lengthways 2tsp baby capers 500g tuna Sea salt and freshly milled pepper Soft herbs, to garnish METHOD Heat ½tbs of the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. GOING OUT
I’m with Muriel D Stefanie Jones was determined to land a role in the stage version of a muchloved Aussie film classic
reams really do come true, at least according to Stefanie Jones. The theatre star pinned all her hopes on landing a role in multi-award-winning musical Muriel’s Wedding – and it worked. When one of the most loved and hilarious Aussie films of all time comes to life on stage at QPAC next month, Stefanie will tread the boards as Muriel’s best friend Rhonda. “The show has such a great vibe,” she tells Brisbane News. “It’s different in some ways from the movie, for example, everything is heightened for stage, but we still have all the great movie moments and the Abba songs people love. It makes you wonder why they didn’t turn it into a musical years ago.” The production also features plenty of addictive new songs written by Brisbanebred pop icon Kate Miller-Heidke and her husband Keir Nuttall – one of the things that further attracted Stefanie to the show. “I love the music and am a huge fan of Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir,” she says. “The music they’ve written has turned the movie into a new, modern musical. I can’t imagine the pressure they must have felt trying to write music that would sit alongside Abba music, but they ultimately knew they were on to something special. “I knew I had to be a part of the show because it’s the quintessential Australian story. It’s also a new Australian work by Australian creatives and that’s not something that happens very often. Everything is imported from the West End and Broadway and those are very beautiful and popular shows but they are not ours.” Stefanie, who hails from Brisbane but now lives in Melbourne, began her musical theatre career at the age of seven when she appeared as Young Eponine in Cameron Mackintosh’s 10th Anniversary Tour of Les Miserables. She says she hasn’t ruled out playing the adult Eponine one day, but in the meantime is enjoying the complexities of Rhonda. Muriel’s fellow outcast, the pair move from their small Aussie seaside town of Porpoise Spit to the big city of Sydney, where Muriel changes her name and begins the arduous task of redesigning her life to

match her fantasies. “Rhonda is so effortlessly cool and relaxed, far cooler than me, but she’s the friend Muriel needs and also the friend we all need I think,” Stefanie says. “She grounds Muriel and shows her the way but also the fun side of life. “Of course the hard part of her journey is when she is paralysed. For me that’s something I find physically and emotionally draining to play every night. “Often it is the people who are so full of life and on the front foot and gung-ho that have to face the biggest challenges. I think that’s what we all love about Rhonda.” HANNAH DAVIES Muriel’s Wedding the Musical, from Sep 19, Lyric Theatre, QPAC, South Bank, $70-$165. qpac.com.au

SNAKE ISLAND
Sarah Thornton, Text, $30
Ben Hobson, Allen and Unwin, $30
In this thrilling pager turner, penned by Brisbane lawyer Sarah Thornton, a feisty yet flawed heroine refuses to be dissuaded from pursuing the truth when several crimes are committed. Clementine Jones has left her former life as a high-flying lawyer, escaping from a fatal accident she caused while drink driving. She lives as a hermit in the small town of Katinga where she coaches a team at the local footy club. But her plan to lie low backfires when the team achieves its best season in 50 years, uniting the whole town. When the team’s star, indigenous player Clancy Kennedy, quits on the eve of the finals, Clementine cannot let it rest when his excuse does not make sense. She soon finds herself face-to-face with the town’s violent and racist underbelly and is forced to decide whether to keep investigating, even if it means her own terrible secret will be revealed. Tasmanian-born Thornton completed her law degree in Brisbane, where she worked for more than six years, and was named Australian Corporate Lawyer of the Year in 2016. She has since retired from her 20-year legal career and wrote Lapse while living with husband Dean on their 43-foot catamaran.
Brisbane author Ben Hobson blends black comedy and action in a style reminiscent of films such as Fargo by the Coen brothers, for his second novel Snake Island. Hobson, who teaches English and music at Bribie Island State School, set his debut To Become a Whale around southeast Queensland, inspired by Moreton Bay’s now closed whaling station. The local teacher has set his second release in the Victorian smalltown rural communities of his childhood, in the 1990s. Snake Island is a tale of vengeance and redemption, focusing on three families whose lives are interlocked. Venerable local couple Vernon and Penelope Moore are ashamed of their son Caleb, who is in jail for assaulting his wife. But when they hear Caleb is being regularly brutalised by the menacing Brendan Cahill, son of Ernie Cahill, who heads the local drugdealing operation, Vernon decides to do something about it. What follows is a series of escalating violent events, further ramped up when two members of a Melbourne drug syndicate come to assist the Cahill family. This polished, seat-ofyour pants thriller delivers well-drawn characters and pulse-racing action.

BLUE ROSE Kate Forsyth, Vintage, $33 With her intelligence, feistiness, innate kindness and her belief in equality, Viviane de Faitaud displays all the qualities of a heroine ahead of her time. Kate Forsyth’s latest leading lady also believes in marrying for love – an unlikely prospect for an aristocrat coming of age during the French Revolution, when young women are forced into arranged marriages. When Viviane meets ambitious young Welshman David Stronach, who is creating a prestigious garden for Viviane’s family chateau – the grand Chateau de Belisama-sur-le-Lac in Brittany – in the late 1700s, their impossible love blooms. After David is forced to leave, he soon finds himself sailing on a British Embassy expedition to China, where he searches for the fabled blood-red “blue rose” he and Viviane once talked about. Back in France, Viviane suffers a dire fate as a member of the overthrown aristocracy, and spends time in jail as well as being disguised as a peasant. Based on a reallife mission to China and events of the French Revolution, Forsyth, who has sold more than a million books, delivers an epic and beautiful love story that straddles East and West cultures. Fans will not be disappointed.

SUNDAY 25 AUGUST
UK-based author (and children’s book editor) Kesia Lupo’s debut novel – for the young adult market – opens in dramatic fashion with teenager Lena running for her life after being sentenced to death. Magic is banned in the sealed-off city of Dukes Forest and Lena is found to have been dabbling in the mystical arts. She escapes with the help of a mysterious masked lady, Constance, who is returning to Dukes Forest after several years away from the walled city, which is cursed by a powerful stormcloud of pestilence. Lena is found by huntsman Emris, a powerful magician who comes from the City of Kings and has been chasing Constance. Emris takes Lena to the City of Kings to receive training for her magical skills. Constance, the daughter of the city’s Duke and a formidable magician, and Lena, hold the keys to breaking the Dukes Forest cloud spell, but the women need to realise their pivotal connection before the curse reaches its terrifying finale. Lupo, who studied history at Oxford University, crafts a thrilling and well-paced read filled with rousing imagery and relatable characters in a richly woven universe – with a good dollop of romance.

ONCE UPON A TIME … IN HOLLYWOOD (MA15+) hhhkj Director Quentin Tarantino Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie A Tarantino movie without fetishised violence? That was never going to happen, but the attention-grabbing insider-outsider almost makes it through his ode to the Golden Age of Hollywood before resorting to type. And there are moments of surprising subtlety, even tenderness, in this lovinglyrealised and richly-detailed piece of cinematic nostalgia. The most touching scene in the entire film is the one in which Sharon Tate (Robbie), looking effortlessly gorgeous in a white miniskirt, talks her way into a public screening of her latest movie (The Wrecking Crew) on impulse. Shoes off, the beautiful starlet settles back in her seat, taking unselfconscious delight in seeing herself up there on the big screen, anticipating the physical comedy, relishing the audience’s response. Who knew Tarantino was capable of such softness and introspection? His sweet stickybeak is all the more affecting given what we know about Tate’s impending fate. Blending a fictional storyline – about a ’60s screen cowboy (DiCaprio) and his loyal stuntman (Pitt) – with real events, Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood takes place in the months leading up to Tate’s murder by members of the Manson family, two weeks before she was due to give birth. In Tarantino’s fictional version of events, Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) lives next door to the Benedict Canyon house Tate shares with husband Roman Polanski. Where she is part of the in-crowd, his star has already begun to fade. Reduced to
STAR TURN ... Leonardo DiCaprio stars as ageing actor Rick Dalton in Quentin Tarantino’s ode to the Golden Age of Hollywood. playing villains in other actors’ TV shows, Dalton is feeding his self-pity on frozen margaritas. There’s a cracker of an exchange, on a studio backlot, between the phlegmy, bloated actor and his precocious, eight-year-old co-star (Julia Butters). And that’s followed by a powerful scene, back in the trailer, in which Dalton berates himself for fluffing his lines – returning to the set to deliver a masterclass in acting. Each of the key characters gets their “moment”. Cliff Booth (Pitt) has at least three, although being a stuntman, his are less introspective. There’s a very funny showdown between the handsome himbo
(there are shades of Pitt’s breakout Thelma and Louise character in this performance) and Bruce Lee (Mike Moh). And a chilling encounter with Manson’s brainwashed flowerchildren at the rundown Spahn Movie Ranch – dressed to resemble a ghost town – which is grounded by a very human exchange between Booth and the bedridden owner, George Spahn (Bruce Dern). Pitt also delivers what is arguably the big screen’s best-ever representation of a trip after his character decides to smoke an acid-laced cigarette just before the deranged Manson family members drive up
LATE NIGHT (M) hhhjj Director: Nisha Ganatra Starring: Mindy Kaling, Emma Thompson, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow Mindy Kaling has been breaking down barriers her whole career. Having grown up never seeing people of Indian heritage on the small screen, she went on to intern on Late Night with Conan O’Brien before becoming part of both the cast and the writing staff of the US version of The Office, and finally getting her own show, The Mindy Project. Kaling is well placed to comment on the lack of diversity in television, which is the theme of the movie she has written and stars in, Late Night. She plays Molly Patel, a quality control expert at a chemical plant and amateur stand-up comic who lands an interview for a writing job on a late-night talk show. She’s in luck, as the program’s prickly host, Katherine Newbury (Thompson), has been criticised for having 16 BRISBANE NEWS August 14-20, 2019
VARIETY ACT ... Mindy Kaling (left) and Emma Thompson in a scene from Late Night. an all-white, all-male writing staff. Patel gets her break, but soon realises the show has other problems. After 28 years, it’s stale, ratings are stagnant, and Newbury has been informed by her network boss (Amy Ryan) that she is to be replaced as host by a sexist young male comic (Ike Barinholtz).
Kaling and Thompson make a likeable comic double act – one an awkward fan girl in awe of her idol, the other a cold fish out of touch with the real world. Thompson’s character has been compared to Meryl Streep’s in The Devil Wears Prada, and indeed, Newbury is a boss so toxic that she
in a wheezing rust bucket. Passionately retro, jam-packed with intertextual references and performed by pros – as a theatrical experience, Once Upon A Time ... in Hollywood has much to recommend it. As a piece of cinema, however, this sprawling love letter to a bygone era amounts to less than the sum of its parts. In-jokes are fun, but they don’t lend much emotional depth. And Tarantino toys with the tension of some of his key sequences for so long, there’s a danger his audience will nod off while they are waiting. Fabulously flawed. VICKY ROACH assigns numbers to her writers rather than bother to learn their names – which is funny. On camera, however, she struggles to show us how she could win over an American mass TV audience. Newbury’s persona is imperious, rather than charming, which is a terrible thing to have to say about a role played by Emma Thompson, and the script’s major flaw. Credibility aside, where Thompson and the film actually shine is in the more dramatic moments, when we learn about Newbury’s struggles with depression and about faultlines in her marriage to older, ailing husband Walter (Lithgow). Newbury’s show needs an injection of honesty and self-awareness, and when Patel writes a skit about “white saviours” Thompson starts to convince as a comedian and the movie really hits its stride. The film’s thesis is that comedy thrives on variety, on a diversity of ideas and viewpoints, and it’s one that holds true for any workplace. NICK DENT V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

BEAUTY
Kailo Medispa has already had interest from rural customers wanting to fly in for a treatment
French class Savvy Parisians swear by Biologique Recherche and now the cult range has arrived in Brisbane Hannah Davies
M
y mother swears by soap and water for cleansing the day away but I think even she would find it hard to argue the benefits of Biologique Recherche – the French skincare brand that is said to work “miracles”. Fans include Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Aniston and Anna Wintour, not to mention legions of skincare-savvy French women, and now, joy of joys, Brisbane women can experience the magic for themselves. Kailo Wellness Medispa at The Calile Hotel in Fortitude Valley is the first clinic in Queensland to stock the elite range, as well as a variety of tailored facial treatments. Created 40 years ago by Dr Philippe Allouche and his wife Josette – he a
medical doctor and she a physiotherapist – Biologique Recherche products are made using professional-grade formulas designed to treat a range of skin types and conditions. The tightly held product line has gained cult status among lovers of serious skincare and beauty editors around the world and is particularly famous for its Lotion P50 – a skin-balancing exfoliator which moisturises and regulates oil (among other things), and has been hailed by some as “life-changing”. Resident medical aesthetic practitioner at Kailo, Dr Edwina Morgan, says the clinic is thrilled to be one of only five in Australia to sell the Parisian skincare range, particularly as the brand only
collaborates with high-end clinics that provide a bespoke service. Indeed, Kailo has already had interest from rural customers wanting to fly in for a treatment, spurred on by the fact that French women are renowned for their flawless skin. My mother’s soap preaching aside, I am keen to experience the magic for myself with a signature facial at Kailo. The session begins with a cup of soothing ginger and lemon tea, and a mini bowl of almonds, which I love. I eat two bowls. Once on the ultra-comfortable treatment table, I relax into 1½-hours of products being applied and assiduously removed. First there is cleansing, then the “miracle” P50, and a heavenly sequence of
serums and masks. The effectiveness of the products has much to do with the fact they are made from pure, concentrated ingredients. But the downside of that is they don’t smell particularly pleasant. The therapist explains that most of the aroma is down to the ingredients – fruits, herbs, yeast – being fermented, which heightens their potency and ensures they are more easily absorbed by the skin. Further investigation reveals there are other more “exotic” ingredients in these products, such as salmon sperm and cow placenta, both of which are said to improve skin elasticity. Then there’s the cream containing amniotic fluid. Not for the faint hearted. Included in the treatment is a facial massage technique comprising of strong pinching movements to “temporarily lift my face”. Apparently if you get these treatments often enough, this trains the muscles into lifting by themselves – no facelift required. I’m willing to give anything a go if it means banishing fine lines. In fact, for me, the most off-putting thing about Biologique Recherche is the fact the products have to be used with cold water – a chilly pitfall during winter months. Regardless, my facial complete, I had to admit my skin looked plumper and more lifted. Provided with a goodie bag of samples to take home, I have been persisting with the regimen and while I’m yet to receive any compliments on my complexion (boo), I’m looking forward to telling Mum that it beats soap and water any day of the week. Biologique Recherche signature facial, $220 for 60 mins, Kailo Medispa, Fortitude Valley, kailomedispa.com. biologiquerecherche.com.au

Into the wild Brisbane photographer Kara Rosenlund returns to Tasmania’s Satellite Island five years after she discovered its rugged beauty, and revealed it to the world
I
first heard about Satellite Island in what seemed like whispers about a rugged and remote island that lies unspoilt off the southern Tasmanian mainland. I had bought a one-way ticket to Tasmania to really immerse myself in the search for authentic Australian homes for my book I was shooting, Shelter – How Australians Live (Penguin, 2015). It seemed like a mythical place which no one could tell me much about or who it belonged to. I became rather obsessed. I was staying at the back of a woman’s house in Battery Point, in her stables. Each day I would leave in search of shacks for the book and her small converted stables were so lovely to come back to. In the evenings I would be on the laptop planning – who else could I follow up, looking at maps, emailing people to find the next
24 BRISBANE NEWS August 14-20, 2019
shelter to photograph. The whole time I was trying to figure out how on earth I was going to find a contact for Satellite Island. Some locals had heard of it and others had no idea. I get very emotional thinking about what happened next …
PARADISE FOUND Late one evening I was feeling a bit down, it had been a few weeks in which I had been away from home. My laptop went “boom” and I received an email saying: “Hi Kara, My name is Kate and I follow you on Instagram and I can see that you are in Tasmania. We have a private island called Satellite Island and I’d love to invite you over for a few days … ” I couldn’t believe this woman found me and not the other way around. It was such a fateful moment. The next week I
excitedly drove my little hire car down to Kettering and caught the barge over to Bruny Island, not knowing what to expect. I met Richard, the island keeper on Satellite, on the shores of Bruny near the pub, and Kate and her mum. We all went over the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the work boat, and that is where I spent the next three nights … on Satellite Island. We spent the first night getting to know each other in a raucous of laughter and stories and wine, then the next day Kate and her mum left, off into the distance on the workboat to catch a flight. I found myself alone on the island, with no reception. The island itself is small, with a main house named the “Summer House” and another called the “Boathouse”. No shops to duck into for supplies or any other distractions. Early each evening I would
collect mussels, dive for abalone and shuck oysters from the ancient rock shelf which circles the remote island. It was wonderful being able to collect what you needed, while observing the natural beauty of the coastal landscape. A primal routine. I would spend the days exploring and photographing the rock shelf and watching the tide come in and out, bringing with it beautiful sea treasure in the form of seaweed, kelp and shells. I didn’t really sleep the whole time I was there. The weather would change so dramatically, so I was constantly on alert, waiting to see what would reveal itself to me. From sunrise to sunset and beyond, I didn’t want to miss a thing. Because the island is so close to Antarctica you experience what feels like seven seasons in one day. One moment perfect blue skies

LAND AHOY … (clockwise from main) The Boathouse, Satellite Island; Kara’s husband Timothy explores the island’s rock shelf; Kara having fun on Pearl the boat; interior touches in the boathouse; an aerial view of the whale-shaped island. Pictures: Kara Rosenlund and sunshine, then it would be raining. Fronts would move in and then blow away. Very wild. I was constantly shooting, as the same scene would change within minutes. Even when I was lying in bed in the boathouse watching the stars at night, I didn’t want to shut my eyes because there was still beauty everywhere. Beauty in the sound of the lapping water underneath the boathouse, watching the shooting stars in the southern night sky, and even the sound of squabbling seabirds. Once I had lost all the light for the day that’s when I could settle in and relax. My thoughts would wander back to my family (husband Timothy and parents Doug and Shirley) and how much they would love the island and how I hoped that one day we could all experience its magic together. I knew I had found a very raw and sacred

place and had shot some truly beautiful work for my book. But I also knew I would have to keep it a secret for over a year until the work was released in the book. It’s difficult finding somewhere that you love so much and are so captivated to share, but you also know that it will be changed the moment you do.
FIVE YEARS ON Satellite Island has definitely become a hot destination since those early days, and watching the world discover Satellite Island for themselves since then has been exhilarating to witness. I decided to return in June this year and this time I did bring my family along. For Christmas I wrapped up two eagle feathers in brown paper and gave them to my parents as gifts, with a note that said
“Merry Christmas, we are going to the most special place on Earth”. Going back after all this time was really emotional. This time round I surprised my family with a seaplane trip from Hobart’s waterfront to Satellite Island with Above and Beyond. It was such a thrilling and old school way to arrive and see the whaleshaped island by air. Coming in by seaplane over the water and seeing the boathouse where I slept all those nights was like seeing an old familiar friend. The thing about visiting a natural haven like this is that once you let nature in, it has a way of reconnecting you to what’s truly important and silencing what’s not. And just like before, the days would start and end with lighting a fire on the boathouse deck. And again, not wanting to miss a single thing, I watched
the stars in the night sky from the bed of the boathouse and listened to the seabirds squabbling out at sea. We would explore the rock shelf in utter wonder. I loved seeing the expressions on my family’s faces, the excitement of nature. Collecting oysters, picking up abalone shells and sea urchins which had come in on the tide. Being in awe of the seaweeds and molluscs. Having the time to appreciate the smallest details in nature and spend time together as a family, without the everyday distractions, was one of the most precious gifts the island could ever give us. To celebrate returning to Satellite Island, Kara has released five new photographic prints, inspired by the raw abstract beauty that flourishes on the island. kararosenlund.com

LAST WORD
Phil Brown The blokes used to sit on their stools and ... leer at passing bikini girls, making the sort of inappropriate comments people made in the 70s Apparently they are reopening one of the Gold Coast’s cultural icons. I refer of course to the Surfers Paradise Beer Garden which will reappear in the heart of Surfers Paradise this month as a rooftop beer garden, according to a press release I received by email last week. Why would this interest me when I am, as you know, teetotal? The thing is that when I was a teenager growing up on the Gold Coast I once worked at the old Surfers Paradise Beer Garden which was just one of the watering holes at the old Surfers Paradise Hotel. The pub is long gone but having the beer garden back will rekindle memories of the joint for many people.
The original hotel was opened in 1925 by Jim Cavill. When I was a teenager it was really the heart and soul of Surfers Paradise and as well as the bars and the beer garden there was a nightclub where me and my mates spent way too much time getting rejected by girls. It was called the Paradise Room but we called it the “Parasite Room”. I got a job picking up glasses and worked several of the venues. They used to call that position “yardman” but nowadays it’s more commonly known as “glassie” I believe. It wasn’t exactly fun. You would get some less than charming clientele like the bikies who used to taunt me because I was obviously a surfer, a breed they abhorred. I
recall picking up the glasses off one table full of these leather-clad animals while one of them was busy throwing up into an old German army helmet. Charming. After removing their empties they complained that the glasses hadn’t been empty and therefore, they should get a fresh round of drinks. No one was game to argue. The old beer garden was expansive with a lot of greenery and was very popular. I also picked up the glasses in the famous Corner Bar, which was also known as the Birdwatchers Bar. In those politically incorrect days the blokes used to sit on their stools by the open windows and leer at passing bikini girls making the sort of inappropriate comments people made back
in the 1970s. They used to raffle cooked chooks in the bar to raise money for the local lifesavers and the winners would sit at the bar tearing the chickens apart with their bare hands. Classy, very classy. I spent a summer working there and the pub’s other venues, gingerly picking my way between the drinkers and plucking glasses from their midst, often with howls of protest because there may have been one small drop of beer left in the bottom. Talk about desperados. I was thinking about all this when I heard they were reopening the Surfers Paradise Beer Garden. You may want to visit but I won’t be. I don’t want to spoil the golden memories of my misspent youth.

CRYPTIC CLUES Across
Down
it matter if it’s love or lust? This week affords you the courage to be yourself, with little apology.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) A phase of your life is coming to a close, so prepare for disruption. Relationships built on sand can expect some erosion. Aquarian discontent could even extend to clandestine meetings. Singles, too, may prefer a secret dalliance. Finances feature strongly, as does the need to chase your professional dreams.
