Brighter days Entrepreneur, mother, widow ... Emily Hall finds happiness after heartbreak
This week... “I guess I would just want it to be a happy story rather than a tragic one.” These were Emily Hall’s words to me back in August when she agreed to an exclusive interview with Brisbane News (Cover Story, P8). They are words that reveal much about the character of this brave young woman. The widow of Matthew Hall, a Brisbane pilot who died suddenly in 2017, just weeks before the birth of their first child, Emily is intent on creating a happy, love-filled life for her and her adorable son, Harry. Of course it’s not always easy – grief has a way of sneaking up on us when we least expect it – but Emily is focused on the positive and forging ahead in work, and love. Writer Tonya Turner responds to Emily’s request with an uplifting portrait of a woman overcoming tragedy. Thank you for trusting us with your story, Emily.

Cherry on top By day Charlotte Ree works as a book publicist – now she’s happily promoting her own Emma Schafer
T
here were nine cakes at Charlotte Ree’s Hunter Valley wedding last year and not one of them was a fondant-covered fruit cake. Every aspect of the Mexican-fiestathemed shindig shirked tradition, from Charlotte’s colourful Alice Temperley dress to the gelato cart sitting in the corner. That’s because the 28-year-old is a trendsetter, and her debut Just Desserts ($16.99, Plum), is breaking the mould too. “It’s a pocket rocket cookbook,” says Charlotte, a Sydney-based book publicist by day and self-taught baker by night. “It’s A5 in size and it’s not a traditional cookbook that relies on the celebrity or the personality of the baker who has written it. It’s really about cakes and accessible recipes to get people baking.” This cookbook certainly doesn’t lack personality though. It’s packed just as full with delicious baking recipes as it is with clever puns. In fact Charlotte, who will appear at Bulimba’s Riverbend Books next month, and husband Diego, 29, pride themselves on their clever word play. From the “dedicaketion” on the opening page to the quip “you don’t make friands with salad” midway through, this is a cookbook that has joy in every page. “The puns were a point of difference for me and another way to use my sense of fun and creativity,” Charlotte says. Just Desserts features 30 cake, biscuit, slice and dessert recipes. From chocolate brownies to caramel slice to a layered berry pavlova, it’s a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds. In the lead-up to its release,
CAKE DREAMS ... Book publicist turned author Charlotte Ree says anyone can bake if they have the time and confidence. Charlotte spent five years building a successful baking business in which she develops content for homewares brands including Williams-Sonoma, Kenwood, Marimekko and Cobram Estate. “They send me their ranges and I take photographs, using them in my cooking,” Charlotte says. “A publicist’s hours are never nine to five ... so there are definitely all-nighters in there but baking is so rewarding that I never find it a chore. I love
seeing the end result in front of me within an hour. You don’t get that kind of turnaround in publishing.” It helps also that she’s a self-professed “feeder”. “I love gifting food to people and I’m always the baker for special occasions with the family or in the office. Every year I also do a Friendsmas (friends Christmas) with 20 of my mates. Everyone is sick afterwards but they still have another piece of pavlova. It’s a great way to show love and
it’s inexpensive.” And she says anyone can do it. “So often I hear people say, ‘I can’t bake’. But you actually can. You just need the time and the confidence.” Just Desserts with Charlotte Ree, Nov 5, 6.30pm, Riverbend Books, Bulimba. riverbendbooks.com.au

Power of love Heavily pregnant with her first child when her life fell apart, Emily Hall weathered a tragic loss to find happiness again for her – and her darling boy Tonya Turner
E
mily Hall has just finished her regular morning gym session with her close group of girlfriends near her home in Stafford. Sitting in a cafe in her gym gear, hair tied back showing her quiet green eyes, the beautiful megawatt smile that lights up her Instagram feed hasn’t appeared yet. It’s one of the harder days. “Widow – mumma – survivor” her Instagram profile reads. She can’t imagine changing it any time soon. After her husband, Matthew Hall, passed away almost three years ago after suffering heatstroke while dirt bike riding in 30Cplus temperatures in the Beerburrum State Forest on the Sunshine Coast, Emily would never be the same again. Matt was a young and healthy 29-yearold working as a pilot for Virgin Australia. A month before, he’d thrown his high school sweetheart a Cuban-themed “flirty 30 fiesta party”. Pictures of a radiant and heavily pregnant Emily wearing a floral headdress and bright kaftan with Frida Kahlo emblazoned on the front hugging Matt, her friends, her family and her beautiful round belly populated her feed. In January 2017, at 36 weeks pregnant, her fairy tale life turned into a nightmare. The memories of the dogs barking, the police at her door, the wondering why Matt wasn’t home yet, the dogs still barking, the police getting her husband’s name wrong, the hope they had the wrong house, the question – “Did your husband go dirt bike riding today?” – and eventually the awful, awful news remain vivid.
“It still traumatises me … They said his temperature got really high and they couldn’t resuscitate him, and I just started pacing. I thought, he can’t, we’re just about to have a baby,” she says. The two weeks between Matt’s death and the birth of their son, Harrison Matthew Alexander Hall, felt like an eternity. Grief took hold, the funeral was held and Emily started using Instagram as a diary to cope with the overwhelming feelings she was experiencing. The day after his death, she wrote: “For those of you who don’t know, my love and my light died yesterday from dehydration and exhaustion while dirt bike riding. He was my best friend and my soulmate. I can’t fathom doing life without him but my strength is knowing he will live through his son. I will love him enough for the two of us and I will make sure I do Matt proud and be the best mum to him. “I love you @matt_hally87 with all of my heart and all of my soul and I’ll miss

Main photo: Russell Shakespeare/AAP you every single day.” She shows me the heart tattoo on her left ring finger inked when they got engaged in Bali and the tattoo of Matt’s initials on her right ankle she got after he died. As the days, weeks and months went by, Emily poured her heart out on love, loss,
loneliness, hope and survival, finding strength in the most important person in her world. “I often think if I wasn’t about to have Harry, where I would be right now or how I would’ve been. You’ve got no choice. You have this little human you have to look after and just that moment

when they put Harry in my arms was the best feeling in the world. I thought, this is my job now,” she says. As time went on, her raw and personal posts saw her followers grow organically to almost 10,000 people. “I never did it to inspire anyone. I
started because it was healing and therapeutic for me and I didn’t realise how many women I was helping through my own healing. It helps to speak to people who have been through the same thing and help others to know that they aren’t alone and it’s not always going to hurt this
bad. I have made some amazing friends through Instagram. It really is amazing to see how powerful women can be when they team up instead of against each other,” she says. Harry, now two, is at day care today. He goes three days a week and has also been
spending one day with Emily’s mum, Debbie, and one day with Matt’s mum, Di. “He’s the happiest little boy. The older he gets the more I see Matt in him – the little faces he does, the little mannerisms, and he’s got this cheeky little smile like Matt had,” Emily says. During the week, she throws herself into her own travel consultancy business and runs footwear label El Zapato, which she founded with her best friend Leticia Gaskell. Its Spanish translation is “The Shoe”, with the El also referencing the first letter of Emily and Leticia’s names. Although Emily is Cypriot, she was more than happy with the snazzy business name that referenced Leticia’s Spanish heritage. It was a venture they started in 2014 after travelling to Bali together with a group of friends and deciding to design their own range of quirky and stylish leather sandals. “It’s really caught on. A lot of shoe companies focus on heels and you can’t get a lot of fun sandals. If you put on a nice dress you can put on a nice little pair of sandals and I think fashion allows it now too. If you want to dress it up even more you can put metallic sandals on, make it a little bit more fancy,” Emily says. The online shop has materialised into a pop-up store on James St from now until mid-November featuring their latest collection including their new Valentine sandals with a heart-shaped toe. “People are going wild for them,” Emily says. says Leticia is like a sister to her and has helped her through her darkest hours. “We fight, it’s just one of those things, but I can never repay her for what she did for me. It’s pretty special. “She just dropped everything to be there with me when Matt died. It’s all a bit of a blur, but she was just there,” she says. A year ago, another special person arrived in Emily’s life. In the hope of finding love again, Emily tentatively joined the dating app, Bumble. On her first and only date, she met Davey Downey. They hit it off instantly, and in a remarkable twist of fate, he told her he’d just been for a job interview he
really hoped to get, which turned out to be with Matt’s family’s business. With Davey, 37, now working as the company’s business development manager, Emily says Matt’s family has been amazingly supportive of their relationship. For others, it’s been more
difficult. “I think everybody deserves to be loved and I think people will always have their judgments about if it’s too soon, but I try not to think about what other people are thinking because no one’s been where I’ve been,” Emily says. “I thought, I can either let this ruin me
for the rest of my life or I can choose to make the most of my life and what I’ve still got, so I didn’t give up on finding love again.” It’s not always easy. Davey himself has been through tough times, including his own marriage breakdown and the loss of several friends to suicide. Together, they navigate these sensitive heartaches, bringing love and understanding to each other’s world. Emily pulls out her phone to show a photo of Davey and Harry wearing a pair of matching board shorts for their new business together, Pina and Palma, set to launch soon. “I feel like Davey’s got our back. From day one he’s been there for us. It’s really nice to see the relationship between him and Harry, it’s quite amazing. “They love each other, we’re a little family now,” Emily says. LIFE
Brooke Falvey It was a big couch for one small woman, but it was like stretching out on a cloud. I could picture us spending long days together eating cheeseburgers As someone who has watched every episode of Friends at least twice, I’ve always identified with Rachel, but I recently discovered I am a little like Ross, too, and it can be summed up in one word: Pivot. In the fifth season of Friends – which aired in 1999 – Ross buys a couch, refuses to pay the delivery costs and tries to move the couch into his apartment with a little help from his friends. Simple, right? Wrong. Ross, Rachel and Chandler try to manoeuvre the couch up the stairs, with Ross screaming “Pivot!”. Eventually the couch is so damaged it ends up cut in half. Twenty years on, the scene is still
hilarious – until you’re living it. After deciding it was time for a new couch, I spent three months couch surfing my way around furniture stores. In my mind I wanted something with a chaise, and ideally in turquoise velvet. In the end, I bought a beautiful 3.5 seat, extra deep couch in lavender grey. It was a big couch for one small woman, but it was like stretching out on a cloud. I could picture us spending long days together eating cheeseburgers and bingewatching bad reality-TV shows. It was also on sale. After checking the dimensions of the
couch and the lift at my building, I signed on the dotted line and paid for delivery, because I wasn’t making the same mistake as Ross. But it wasn’t to be. Forty-eight hours and about 150 pivots later, my beautiful couch remained in the carpark of my apartment block. Return it, some people said. Sell it, others suggested. Remove the arm, a few recommended. Say what? It’s a proper grown-up couch, not a DIYer from Ikea. Known to be stubborn at times, I refused to give up; there had to be a way, I just needed a new plan. As the delivery guys drove off to put the couch in my parents’
garage, I debated whether it would make more sense to move apartments, or hire a crane to lift it on to the 7th floor. Craning it in seemed like a good option, until someone asked how I’d get it back out when it came time to move. “I’ll do a Ross and cut it in half,” I half-joked. In the end, I had to be practical; I returned the grey couch, borrowed one from my parents and started the couchsurfing process again. I then took a chance and ordered a turquoise velvet beauty online and so far we’ve shared some blissful days together, watching Friends re-runs.

FOOD
Grand design A glamorous interior sets the scene for a sumptuous lunch that never quite materialises RESTAURANT Tony Harper There’s the seed of something good here, lost in chaos. And it’s a shame because the effort that has gone into creating the physical aspects of The Matriarch is obvious. It’s good looking, kind of Through the Looking Glass meets Barbara Eden’s genie bottle, all contained in a revamped warehouse space. There’s a couple of big, old, slightly stressed indoor olive trees providing focal points and a courtyard area to the front. There’s acres of space, it’s atmospheric and it feels unlike any other restaurant in town. But unfortunately, it takes more than a fit-out to make a good dining experience. The staff is a happy, chatty bunch, they do their best to work around a coeliac, and everyone is up-beat. And I know, because I met most of them over the hour and a bit I was there. Does the waitstaff have sections? Maybe, maybe not. Which is where the chaos comes in. One hand doesn’t know what the other is doing. We sit in limbo for 35 frustrating minutes waiting to order some food, and when we finally place an

order, we have a small procession coming intermittently to ask us if we’d like to order. Yikes. And we eat lots of share dishes, most of them from the deep-fryer – chips three ways, spring rolls, other bits and bobs – so there are greasy fingers everywhere, but not a napkin in sight. Not on our table or, as far as I can see, on any other. Odd, hey? Luckily jeans are fat-absorbent. The culinary highlight should be lobster rolls ($24 for two), but they are merely ok. Too little lobster (but what’s there is really good seafood – sweet, meaty and saline), buns a tad stale. I set about deconstructing mine into lobster bites. Chips three ways ($16.50) is pretty good – sweet potato, beer battered and potato scallops – but let’s face it, it’s chips, not gruyere souffle, so it should be good. And to top things off, my sriracha mayonnaise seems bereft of sriracha. Duck spring rolls ($12 for four), tick;
long, thin, plenty of duck. Sliders ($18 for three), changed to suit my coeliac son are good; spicy chicken skewers ($16) are merely OK. Baby beetroot leaves are on everything, from lobster rolls to chicken skewers. Here’s my take. The chef can cook, but he’s aimed a little low. It has the feel of good catering food, the stuff you’d get at a stand-up wedding, easy to punch out quickly, fine to eat but hardly the stuff of legend. I sense that The Matriarch kitchen is capable of much more. And with some training and organisation the floor staff would also be capable of much more. The trappings of The Matriarch suggest that someone has put thought and energy into its creation, but it needs effort. Newstead and its surrounds are bursting with good restaurants, and they need to be special to survive. A little more work guys.

RECIPE
A little flourish Simple and versatile, this dressing is all you need for flavour, writes Alastair McLeod If you are a regular visitor to these parts, you no doubt pause to gaze at Miranda Porter’s amazing photography and styling. Perhaps the odd time you tear out the page and it becomes part of your repertoire. If today you linger longer to enjoy the aesthetic, do me (and yourself) a favour and make the miso dressing – three simple ingredients that, when combined, surpass the sum. The dressing is savoury, salty, sour and persistent. Use it with vegetables, smoked or roasted fish, beef, lamb, chicken. If you’re just passing through, that’s OK too.
RIB FILLET, RAW AND ROASTED VEGETABLES, MISO DRESSING Ingredients 80g miso 50ml rice wine vinegar 75ml extra virgin olive oil + additional for brushing steak 2 bunches radish 2 bunches baby turnip Sea salt and freshly milled pepper ½ lemon, zest and juice 4 x 200g rib fillet steaks Method Preheat oven to 190C. Place miso, vinegar and a third of the olive oil in a small bowl and whisk briskly until emulsified. Chill until required. Next scrub and trim radish and turnip and cut into thick slices. Toss half of each in a third of the oil and season generously. Place on a baking tray and roast for 10-15 mins or until golden and tender. Meanwhile, preheat barbecue to its hottest setting. Season steak with salt and pepper and brush with a little olive oil, grill for 5-6 mins, turning every 30 secs or so. Remove and cover loosely with foil and rest for 5 mins before carving. Meanwhile, combine remaining raw vegetables in a bowl and toss with remaining oil, zest, juice and season. To serve, spoon miso dressing on to plates, carve steak and set on top. Arrange roasted and raw vegetables on steak. Sprinkle with greens as desired. TOP DROP … The Talisker distillery’s location on the Isle of Skye (main) lends a saltiness to its whisky.
Tale of the sea Cheers to this whisky that hails from the farthest reaches of Scotland Angus Hughson
The actual Isle of Skye is full of indentations and bays – the sea not only surrounds it but also penetrates deep into the island’s heart with no land less than 8km from the coast. And it is this inescapable ocean influence that gives Talisker its unique characters – its salty, seaspray and peppery aromas drawn from the Atlantic Ocean that are also blended with a good mix of peaty smoke. The Talisker 10 Year OId is the classic – powerfully maritime yet subtle, its younger brother the Talisker Skye more briny and spicy while the Talisker Port Ruighe, finished in port wine casks, is richer and decadent with some floral port undertones.
Talisker’s elegant maritime characters make it not just a whisky to be enjoyed neat, or with a dash of water, but it is also well suited to a range of cocktails and even dishes. The classic Talisker Old Fashioned is created by mixing a small teaspoon of sugar and water in a whisky glass with two dashes of bitters. Then add ice, a slice of lemon peel and a nip of Talisker Skye before mixing and serve. Or the Bobby Burns. Blend a nip of Talisker Port Ruighe and a nip of red vermouth with a couple of dashes of Dom Benedictine with ice in a cocktail shaker and then strain, chilled, into a cocktail glass – the perfect recipe for Burns Night.
Perhaps the best use of Skye’s finest is the Talisker oyster – the briny scotch character matching well with fresh oysters. While oysters can be enjoyed with a few drops of Talisker as dressing, the classic Talisker Oyster is a bit more involved. Start by taking a small nip of Talisker and follow it with a large creamy Pacific oyster. Then pour a little more whisky into the empty oyster shell and let the Talisker blend with oyster liquor before knocking it all back in a single shot. Whether washing down an oyster or enjoyed neat, Talisker’s smoky, saline personality makes it a must-have single malt in any whisky collection. malts.com

here are few more isolated places in Europe than the Isle of Skye. It sits off the western coast of Scotland exposed to the elements and is regularly battered by storms whipped up in the North Atlantic – its few peaks providing little protection. Skye is a fairly unforgiving place for much of the year, which in part is why it crafts such exceptional single malt Scotch whisky. The Isle of Skye is home to the Talisker distillery, which in a little over a decade will celebrate its 200th anniversary. The distillery sits near the end of a long inland loch and draws its valuable water from Hawk Hill, which sits up behind the distillery and is home to birds of prey such as peregrine falcons.

It’s not the norm in the United States, despite the word United, and I always feel very welcome here.” John, who is one of the world’s most beloved psychic mediums and the author of several New York Times bestsellers, has been connecting people with loved ones on “the other side” for three decades, but never tires of delivering messages from the spirit world. His shows feature question-and-answer sessions, which allow audience members to receive messages from loved ones who have passed away. “Watching lights go on in people’s eyes, when they are living in the dark, is the most rewarding thing about it,” he says. “It’s their recognition that it is real and actually happening and they are still connected to the people who’ve passed on. It’s not about providing a reading or mediumship, it’s about love.” Born and raised on Long Island, New York, John exhibited psychic abilities from a very early age, and was deemed “special” by many in his family. Over the years he
has read for people from all walks of life and has a celebrity following that includes the Kardashians and Oprah. He says messages come to him from spirits “like a daydream” and he has learned how to manage them so he isn’t open to receive things 24/7. “When you do this work you have to be respectful of other people’s lives. I’ll never tune into someone’s vibration without their permission. For me, to walk up to someone in Coles for example and start telling them that someone who’s passed has a message could do more damage than good – it’s not the place to be receiving messages. “In contrast, when I’m doing a live show the audience are there because they want to hear from loved ones who have passed. I consciously switch on and focus and then I’ll get the messages.” Still living in Long Island, John, 50, shares his home with wife Sandra, their children, Justin and Olivia, and three dogs Coco, Sydney and Lucky. He says his children have been blessed with the same psychic gift as him. And he believes everyone can develop their sixth sense. “Everyone has the ability to be psychic but not everyone can read for other people because there is a limit. You can be really intuitive but not have the balance in your personal life to be able to give information to someone else,” John says. “I have friends who are good at getting information but their lives are a hot mess.” Crossing Over with John Edward, Chandler Theatre, Chandler, Nov 9-10, from $75. ticketmaster.com.au

here would be no better way to connect with Aboriginal culture and the vast sweep of history than to gaze upon the work of three extraordinary artists. Warlimpirrnga, Walala and Thomas Tjapaltjarri are part of a group of Aboriginal people who came out of the deserts of Central Australia 35 years ago. The group, who became known as the Pintubi Nine, were the last group of Aboriginal Australians living a completely traditional existence. With 60,000 years of Aboriginal culture behind them, their art is a fascinating window into their world. That art has won acclaim worldwide including in New York where the actor Steve Martin, a keen collector of Australian indigenous 16 BRISBANE NEWS October 23-29, 2019

art, is a big fan. He’s due here soon to perform at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre (Nov 13) with his partner in comedy Martin Short and is expected to pop into Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley to see the exhibition Tjapaltjarri Marnkurrpa. The work is framed by this extraordinary story. It was on Saturday October 13, 1984, that a small family group who had been living a seminomadic hunter-gatherer life, oblivious to the western world, came upon others of their language group who had travelled from the Aboriginal community of Kiwirrkurra in the Gibson Desert of Western Australia. The media treated the whole affair a bit like a circus and this was all 35 years ago this month so the headline in one Melbourne newspaper is understandable
in that context. “We find the lost tribe” it claimed. The Herald, as it turned out, had a journalist on the ground and had the scoop. Of course they didn’t actually find the tribe and the tribe wasn’t lost but it made a good yarn. One thinks of Geoffrey Serle’s 1970s classic about the Australian creative spirit. That book was entitled From Deserts the Prophets Come: The Creative Spirit in Australia 1788-1972. Indeed in the case of the three artists in this show at Mitchell Fine Art, the prophets did indeed come from the desert. In the 35 years that have passed since their meeting with the wider world, most of the group have become artists painting traditional stories and depictions of country. Who better to do this? They have taken part in exhibitions around the world
for almost 20 years but it has only been in the past five years that critical acclaim has come, according to gallery director Mike Mitchell. “Major exhibitions in New York at both Gagosian Gallery and Salon 94 have created unprecedented exposure for these artists and Aboriginal art across the board,” Mike says. “The recognition long overdue for these key contributors to contemporary Aboriginal art is finally happening.” The talent of the three Tjapaltjarri men is obvious and the works are large and impressive and they fill the gallery with an energy that is palpable. You have to see them. You really do. Tjapaltjarri Marnkurrpa, until Nov 9, Mitchell Fine Art, 86 Arthur St, Fortitude Valley, free admission. mitchellfineartgallery.com

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (PG) hhhjj Director Gurinder Chadha Starring Viveik Kalra, Hayley Atwell, Kulvinder Ghir His parents speak a different language (literally and figuratively). And the local skinheads make his life hell. But when a Pakistani teenager discovers The Boss in Luton, England, circa 1987, suddenly he doesn’t feel so alone. Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice) directs this crosscultural coming-of-age story, set against the tumultuous backdrop of Margaret Thatcher’s economic reforms, with a sympathetic touch. Not only is the seasoned Indian-English filmmaker intimately acquainted with issues of dual identity, she’s of an age to remember the music and the fashions firsthand. Chadha’s ease with the conventions of Bollywood cinema doesn’t hurt her latest project either – as evidenced by Javed Khan’s (Kalra) cathartic, Born To Run dream sequence. A huge Bruce Springsteen fan herself, Chadha makes good use of her access to the legendary rocker’s back catalogue, including Badlands, Hungry Heart and Thunder Road (Blinded by the Light was made with Springsteen’s blessing). Ensuring the film’s emotional veracity is co-writer Sarfraz Manzoor upon whose memoir, Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock ‘n’ Roll, it is loosely based. While the rest of his classmates identify

Caught between two cultures, he doesn’t even get to hang out with his childhood mate, Matt (Dean-Charles Chapman), now the lead singer in a fledgling New Romantic band, as often as he used to. “Pakistanis don’t go to parties,” Javed’s overbearing father, Malik (Ghir), informs him at one point, in a manner that doesn’t
invite argument. Things aren’t much better at his new school, where Javed is one of only two South Asian students, although his creative writing teacher, Ms Clay (Hayley Atwell), takes an active mentoring role in his education and he finds himself drawn to one of his classmates, a young activist named Eliza (Nell Williams). An already precarious situation comes to a head when Javed’s father loses his job at the Vauxhall Motors Factory. PAVAROTTI (M) hhhhj Director Ron Howard Starring Luciano Pavarotti, Bono, Placido Domingo You don’t have to be an opera aficionado to fall under the spell of the late, great Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, at least as he is portrayed here. Director Ron Howard prefaces important arias with unobtrusive “cheat sheets” for those of us who don’t know our cabaletta from our coloratura. And of course, the voice speaks for itself. Like its subject, Pavarotti has an easy, popular touch, supported by the skills of a master craftsman. On stage, the tenor was sublime. Off stage, he was a much earthier presence. A mischievous extrovert, with a well-developed sense of empathy, Pavarotti charmed the socks off small children and TV presenters alike. His appetite for life – as well as spaghetti – was infectious. His eyebrows had a life of their own. And his vulnerability made him especially human. “I go to die,” he would say each night before stepping on to the stage. All of which might go some way to explaining why it’s so easy to excuse the man’s transgressions, although Pavarotti’s fellow countrymen and women, not to V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

The real Luciano Pavarotti emerges in Ron Howard’s documentary about the late opera singer. mention the Italian press, took a long time to forgive him for his affair with Nicoletta Mantovani, the much younger woman who eventually became his second wife. Howard might also be accused of glossing over some of his subject’s more difficult behaviour. There was a time when the tenor became known as “The King of the Cancellations”. In 1989, the Lyric Opera of Chicago severed its 15-year relationship with Pavarotti after he pulled out of 26 of 41
scheduled appearances over an eight-year period. Such incidents, along with the charges of tax evasion, are barely touched upon here. But unlike the subjects of Asif Kapadia’s “tragic icon” trilogy – Senna, Amy and Maradona – Pavarotti survived his celebrity, or at least found a way to cohabit with it. He might have been criticised by opera purists for his crossover into popular music – the recording of the Three Tenors’ concert at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma
scrawled across the screen – are all Javed has, together with his friendship with Roops (Aaron Phagura), the young Sikh who introduced him to The Boss’s music. Blinded by the Light is a bit heavy-handed with both the surtitles and the mascara – some of the costumes border on caricature – and there’s nothing particularly subtle about Kalra’s performance. But as a celebration of pop culture’s liberating effect on a tribeless teenager, the sheer exuberance of this “socialist-realist musical” is hard to resist.
with Placido Domingo and José Carreras became the best-selling classical album of all time – but Pavarotti used his new-found rock-star status to perform benefit concerts for humanitarian causes. There’s some great footage of the tenor with Princess Diana, with whom he worked to raise money for the elimination of landmines, and who became a close friend. Howard avoids the potential trap of talking head interviews, which often feel dull and stilted, largely due to the depth of the exchanges. Pavarotti’s first wife, Adua Veroni, a proud, husky-voiced matriarch, and their three adult daughters offer an intimate family perspective. Mantovani, with whom Pavarotti had a daughter, Alice, and his long-time lover and co-performer Madalyn Renee also open up about their relationships. Domingo, Carreras and English rock promoter Harvey Goldsmith, whose gift of the gab almost rivals that of U2’s Bono, are among the professionals who colour the film with their anecdotes. Howard makes good use of a rich treasure-trove of archival footage, from Pavarotti’s early performances to his most recent, and the cumulative effect of that voice is unusually moving. Not quite warts and all, but at once transcendent and very human. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

Aegean dream Take the scenic route and your sneakers on an ancient trail that offers sunshine, views and history, writes Julie Fison
T
he island of Paros is the quintessential Greek holiday destination – charming whitewashed villages, impossibly blue water and fantastic tavernas, but it’s the island’s history that has lured me away from the sparkling Aegean today. I’m in the mountain village of Lefkes, the starting point for an ancient walking trail, known as the Byzantine Path. During medieval times, attacks by pirates made living in coastal villages a risky proposition, so the population gravitated to higher ground for safety. Lefkes, 300m above the sea in the middle of the island, became the capital of Paros, a fortified refuge that has remained unspoilt by the passage of time. Lefkes is a destination in its own right. Its lofty position that once protected it from plundering pirates has also kept it largely unscathed by tourism, as most visitors to Paros are here for the beach life. The village is dominated by the massive 20 BRISBANE NEWS October 23-29, 2019
marble-clad church of Agia Triada. It’s the second largest church on the island, only outdone by the Ekatontapiliani in Parikia, but the remainder of the village is considerably less showy. It has a laid-back charm and is something of a hub for artisans – the perfect spot for a coffee, lunch or just a wander through its bougainvillea-lined laneways. The old capital is all the more pleasant because there are no cars in the heart of the village. If you’re driving to Lefkes take advantage of the parking areas on the outskirts of the town as options are very limited once you get to the main street. Also watch out for buses on the winding road to the old capital. They’re always in a hurry and don’t leave much space for cars coming in the opposite direction! The main laneway through the village meanders between small craft shops, whitewashed houses, bright blue doors and sleeping cats, ultimately opening up into the village square. The flagstone terrace
framed by yellow neoclassical buildings and flower pots is so delightful that I want to bubble wrap the whole scene and take it home. It’s the ideal place for refreshments. But today we’re on a mission. On the wall of the square’s kafenion (traditional cafe) we spot what we’re looking for – the first signpost for the Byzantine Path. We follow the lane further down into the village. About the time we start to feel lost, another sign appears. There are a few more confusing twists and turns but eventually we find a white stone that marks the start of the trail. Ahead of us the medieval route cuts through the terraced fields, snaking its way towards the coast, as it has done for a thousand years. The Byzantine Path is part of a much larger network of trails, but this is the bestpreserved and most popular section of the old route, and provides spectacular views all the way across the sea to the neighbouring island of Naxos. The path was originally paved in locally
sourced marble. The nearby quarry not only produced great road surfaces, it was also preferred by ancient Greek sculptors. The Venus di Milo, one of the most iconic statues from the period, is said to be made from Parian marble. Marble paving still survives on parts of the path, other sections have become a wide, brown dirt trail, bordered by stone walls, herbs, wildflowers and farming land. Aside from the steady flow of hikers in Nikes and caps, the scene looks like it hasn’t changed in centuries. The path is largely downhill, making it a relatively easy 4km walk. There’s no need for hiking boots, but the surface is uneven and trainers or something similar are definitely needed. My eyes are on the track for much of the time, making sure I don’t stumble on the damaged paving stones. But it’s worth having regular breaks to take in the view of the Aegean Sea ahead, and to turn and admire the village behind, V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
TRAVEL
PICTURE PERFECT … Walking on the Byzantine Path; boats at Piso Livadi; Prodromos village; Lefkes village square. Pictures: John Fison clinging to the rocky slope. It is possible to walk all the way to the coast – about 9km. We’re not going that far today, but the seaside village of Piso Livadi, near the end of the route, is definitely worth a visit. The quaint little harbour is lined with tavernas. Octopi hang from restaurant fronts, Greek flags flutter from brightly painted fishing boats and cats snooze on practically every available flat surface – including motorbike seats at the local rental shop. There’s also a sheltered swimming beach. The sand is a bit grey for my liking, but the water is beautifully clear and particularly inviting on a hot day. On the outskirts of town is a tiny country church. With its faded frescoes and crumbling stone, the 13th century Ayios Georgios Thalassites is another Byzantine treasure. Our destination for today is Prodromos, about an hour down the mountain on the Byzantine Path. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
The sparkling Aegean is calling and there’s a sun lounge with my name on it
Prodromos has very unpromising outskirts, but once we enter the old village, we discover a slice of Cycladic perfection. The whitewashed archways, flagstone lanes and bursts of pink flowers are so perfect they look like they’ve been staged for a photo. We oblige by taking a hundred pictures to share with the world, and finish the adventure in traditional Greek fashion – in the nearest gyros shop for a rotisserieroasted meat wrap. From Prodromos, it’s an uphill slog back to Lefkes, or there’s a local bus. We’re here with another family and have the advantage of two cars. One has been left at Prodromos, the other is at the top of the mountain. It feels a bit like cheating to take the car, but I’m desperate for a swim. The sparkling Aegean is calling and there’s a sun lounge with my name on it. Julie Fison writes books for children and young adults. ost people who move cities usually make the decision first, then buy a house. Not Kate Connors. When she was holidaying from Sydney on the Gold Coast with her husband Matt three years ago, they drove into Brisbane for the day to have a look around and inspect some homes on the market. “I have a passion for period homes and have long dreamt of owning a Queenslander. It was the first house we looked at and it was love at first sight,” Kate, 39, says. “Even though we weren’t serious about buying or even committed to the move at the time, we put an offer in and it was accepted. The house then became our motivation for moving.” And they haven’t looked back since. Although these days they’re too busy chasing their two young children Stella, 4, and Louis, 1, around their charming Queenslander in Bulimba to sit back and admire its period details, they know they’ve found their forever home. “We fell head over heels for the Queenslander style with its VJ walls, a front porch, leadlight casement windows, fretwork and high ceilings. This house is the epitome of our dream house,” Kate says. After years of apartment living in Sydney, the mature tropical gardens that surround the home and create a completely private retreat at the back was another big drawcard. “We are so grateful for the space and privacy,” Kate says. “On the day we looked at the house there were kids playing sport on the oval next door which gave it this wonderful family atmosphere. We knew at that moment it was to be our home.” As an interior designer and director of her own company, Connors & Co., Kate was able to see the potential in the home’s “perfectly imperfect” condition. While it was well and truly liveable, it was in need of some TLD – tender loving decorating. The heritage colour scheme which made the house feel dark and dated made painting a priority. Alone, a fresh white coat applied to the interiors transformed the home into a contemporary abode, but Kate had only just begun to work her magic. The walls provide a calm and neutral backdrop for colour to be introduced into the furniture and decor, and also means rooms can easily be swapped around as the family grows. Working with the period of the home, Kate thoughtfully combined contemporary finishes with original features and vintage furniture with V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

modern pieces to create balance and interest. In the kitchen, the cupboards were given a new lease on life with Porter’s Paints’ Newport Blue, the window was treated with a sweet Paniola Inverted Roman blind by Anna Spiro, and a Smeg Victoria oven and nostalgic appliances added for classic charm. Art was also placed salon-style around the home including works by some of Kate’s favourite Australian artists including a Belynda Henry landscape and Rachel Castle print. “It’s about mixing high and low and essentially creating a home that is relaxed and liveable. I want my home to be timeless with quality selections that V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
withstand passing trends – and children,” she laughs. “The house is still a work in progress and with any spare time we have, it continues on its journey to become our long-imagined family home. Eventually, when the kids are more independent, we will reconfigure and extend but for now it suits us just fine.” INSIDE STORY What is your favourite spot in the house? I work from home and often follow the best light around. I find the cooler spots in summer and a warm sunny spot in winter. I also often work from the kitchen when I’m cooking. At times every surface is
covered in books, magazines, samples, drawings and files. I tend to take over the house! We eat outside on the back deck mostly, so I’ve adopted the dining room as my office. It has the most beautiful natural light and I feel so relaxed and happy working from that space. What does “home” mean to you? We all lead such busy lives, often stressful and increasingly online, and so home needs to be a sanctuary where we feel comforted and content. Somewhere we can reconnect with our families and make our children feel loved and safe. A home is made by surrounding ourselves with the things we love, that evoke memories and
have a story. These connections bring joy. For me happiness comes from surrounding myself with art, books, beautiful fabrics, vintage furniture and, increasingly, indoor plants. Which piece has the most sentimental value? I took my dining table from my parents’ garage on leaving home at 18. It has been patched and painted every time I’ve moved house over the past 20 years to suit the interior. The latest is Annie Sloan chalk paint in Antibes Green. Surface paradise Paint is a quick and easy way to update your home, but there is a knack to picking shades, says Tahn Scoon
1
If you’re going to paint your interior walls white, keep it simple by using the same colour on walls, ceilings and skirtings. You won’t get a lot of contrast but the undertone will remain consistent. Don’t let your painter use his/her “builder’s white” on your ceiling, it may have a different undertone.
2
I almost always specify white on the main interior walls (who doesn’t love light and airy spaces) but it’s nice to mix it up in other areas. Try a warm, inviting mid-toned grey in the master, gelato inspired hues in the kids’ rooms and a conversation-starting wallpaper in the powder room.
3
When specifying exterior colours, try to avoid bright, saturated colours, which tend to look kitsch in our strong Queensland sunlight. Use “natural” shades such as stone, cream or taupe. White also looks beautiful but needs to be offset with plenty of greenery to avoid it looking too stark.
4
Traditionally, character homes were often painted using five or more colours to pick out the architectural details. For a cleaner, more contemporary look, narrow your palette to only two or three colours.
5
You don’t have to make a feature of either downpipes or gutters. Paint out downpipes in the same hue as your walls and keep gutters the same colour as your roof.
6
Don’t forget your front door. Instantly update your entrance by repainting your front door in a dark, sophisticated charcoal. Or perhaps try something more eye-catching like a French-inspired blue. Brisbane-born comedian, actor and presenter Matt Okine has added author to his list of credentials with the release of his first novel, based on his award-winning autobiographical stand-up show. Mike Amon is like most 12-year-old boys. He wants to be a star athlete, sit with the cool kids and kiss the girl of his dreams – not necessarily in that order. Then his mum – just like Okine’s – is diagnosed with advanced breast and brain cancer, meaning Mike has to live with his weird African dentist dad for the foreseeable future. For young adult readers, this is a funny, relatable and heartwarming look at grief and loss, fitting in, friendship, and growing up. LEANNE EDMISTONE
In 1949, Russian author Boris Pasternak started his novel Doctor Zhivago, which would launch him to international fame and a Nobel prize for literature. Behind its global success was a race to get the manuscript out of Soviet Russia and to the west where it could be published. This fictionalised account follows it from a retreat outside Russia to being smuggled back across the Iron Curtain. While the main characters are female operatives from the US, and the author’s mistress, Pasternak is the story’s tragic heart. He stands divided between literature and his country as well as between his wife and mistress. This is about the power of the novel and the impact a single printed work can have, even in a society as insular as Russia. MITCH MOTT

LAST WORD
Phil Brown Television can be edifying. Most of what I know about the Nazis was gleaned from watching the Hitler Channel, er, I mean the History Channel I have a terrible confession to make. I recently watched a bit of The Masked Singer. It’s over now, thank God, so there’s no temptation for me to watch it again. Did you see this program on Ten? Talk about lame. Free-to-air television just gets worse and worse. Unable to compete with Foxtel and Netflix and the like, it scrapes the bottom of the barrel in its never-ending search for the next mass-market trash. So it makes programs such as The Masked Singer and The Bachelorette, vile creations that dumb down everything and denude intelligence. I watched The Masked Singer for barely 15 minutes just to see what people were
talking about and as I watched I could feel my brain cells decaying and dying. “But it rated well,” my son said. “Cheeseburgers rate well too but they aren’t nutritious,” I said. The people on The Masked Singer were straining to make it exciting and as for Hughesy, well, mate, I know you’ve got to make a living but how low can you go? Television can be edifying and you can learn a lot. Most of what I know about the Nazis was gleaned from watching the Hitler Channel, er, I mean the History Channel. But free-to-air is riven with soul- and brain-destroying tripe. Even the news is rubbish. I start watching it sometimes but after a litany of car accidents and

irrelevance I soon end up back where I belong, on 24, the ABC News channel. Watching The Masked Singer, as I did fleetingly, I was reminded of a 1974 song by Frank Zappa. It’s called I’m The Slime and it’s about televisual mass hypnosis. “I may be vile and pernicious / But you can’t look away / I make you think I’m delicious / With the stuff that I say.” And so it goes on talking about how our minds are being controlled and polluted by “the slime oozin’ out / From your TV set”. Now Frank was right to a point but I believe that by judicious watching you can actually enhance your life and mind. We watch some excellent documentaries on the idiot box and have recently been
rewatching old movies on Foxtel. I’m talking about Bill Collins’ Golden Years of Hollywood. Bill died recently but he will live forever on Foxtel, God bless him. Recently we watched Suddenly Last Summer based on the Tennessee Williams play of the same name. The screenplay of this 1959 classic starring Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift was by Gore Vidal and Williams himself and it’s terrific. No brain cells died while we watching that I can assure you. But watching The Masked Singer I could feel things crumbling inside my cranium. Who was behind the mask? I switched off before I found out because, of course, I couldn’t give a fig.

PRIVATE AND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS: ADVERTISING FEATURE
High-quality education services await Queensland independent schools offer parents a wide choice for their children’s education through a partnership between parents, students and the school. Independent Schools Queensland executive director David Robertson says
parents choose independent schools for their high educational standards, moral and spiritual values, pastoral care and discipline, programs to meet the needs and interests of individuals, homeschool partnerships, and extra- and co-curricular activities.
“For more than 150 years, Queensland’s independent schools have been providing high-quality educational services to a wide range of students,” he says. Mr Robertson says parents should consider what type of learning environment
best suits their child, including their personality, attributes and needs. “It’s not about the child being the right fit for the school – it is finding the right school for the child,” he says. “The independent sector provides parents a choice of education institution based on their values, community and culture. “With more than 200 Queensland independent schools to choose from, you are sure to find a learning environment that best suits your child’s needs. “Independent schools make a significant contribution to education in Queensland, educating 121,000 students. “More than half of all independent schools in Queensland are either operating or are co-located and affiliated with an early childhood service.” Improved interstate migration, steady economic growth and ongoing parental demand for school choice have contributed to independent school enrolments recording their highest growth rate in almost 10 years. According to analysis of February 2019 Non-State School Census data, enrolments at Queensland independent schools increased by 2.3 per cent or more than 2700 students to 123,647 enrolments in 2019. Mr Robertson says this is the highest annual percentage growth rate since 2010 and the largest of any schooling sector between 2018 and 2019.

Let their light shine
Clayfield College is a small school with a big heart. Principal Kathy Bishop says students will be inspired to lead a life of purpose by instilling a love of lifelong learning, building self-belief and resilience, and prioritising kindness. “At a small school with a big heart, their passions will be celebrated and they will be given every opportunity to explore their curiosity and develop a thirst for knowledge,” she says. “As a future changemaker, their holistic education will empower them to be
courageous, work collaboratively, have concern for others and their world, and be connected to their community. “At Clayfield, they will let their light shine. They will make a positive difference in this world.” Discover the college’s values-based learning environment first hand by booking a school tour, or arranging a ‘student for the day’ experience by emailing enrol@clayfield.qld.edu.au. Catholic schools are welcoming to all Every minute of every hour of every day in 141 Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools, dedicated teachers aim to instil a love of lifelong learning and a heart of hope in every student. From Childers in the north, west to Murgon and south to the NSW border, the highly-experienced teachers work in partnership with parents to teach, challenge and transform the lives of thousands of students empowering them to shape and enrich the world. Executive director Pam Betts says a Catholic education creates a sense of purpose, kindness, honesty and compassion in students. She says every student is seen as a gift from God to be nurtured and cherished. “Students are taught the skills, morals and values necessary to be well-rounded Christians and citizens of the world,” Miss Betts says. She says every student’s unique gifts
are recognised and every day teachers seek opportunities to progress those gifts. “Our students are encouraged to develop a sense of belonging and pride in a physical and social setting that is safe, well organised and caring,” Miss Betts says. “Individual skills and talents are nurtured, and student achievement and
self-esteem are strongly promoted. Mutual respect and trust are seen as key to developing a strong, positive culture.” Miss Betts says often, parents are unaware of the affordability offered by Catholic schools. However, she says BCE school fees may be less than imagined with all families given the opportunity to seek a Catholic
education for their child. “Family discounts, fee remissions and other options are available and a confidential chat with the principal can point you in the right direction to access these opportunities,” Miss Betts says. PH: 3033 7000 BRISBANECATHOLICSCHOOLS.COM.AU
Discover their spark Your child’s education should not only be measured by tests and scores. Teachers in today’s Catholic schools know a ranking upon graduation is not the sole definition of your child’s success. Their education should also be filled with encouragement and wonderment; where their heart sings with joy, every school day.

Passion is to the fore For the students of St Joseph’s Nudgee College, their school is a place for learning, and so much more, according to principal Peter Fullagar. “It is a place where they can find their passion,” he says. “The student cohort is made up of writers, athletes, artists, performers, science enthusiasts, maths fanatics, leaders, builders, dreamers, all-rounders, and everything in between. “With state-of-the-art facilities and expert teaching staff, every boy can find and develop their interests and strengths. “It is a place where they can face their fears. “From finding the courage to perform on stage, to nominating for college captain, travelling overseas, or trying a new sport, there are many opportunities for boys to get outside their comfort zone in a supportive environment. It is a place where they can help others. “The college strives to develop young men of big hearts and good character. “The Social Justice Program is an integral part of this development, which sees boys volunteer their time to help those less fortunate and build a better world for all. “It is a place they can call home. For our boarders, this is literal. It is a home where
they are cared for, encouraged to try their best, and can form lifelong friendships which resemble the bond of brothers. “From championing a culture of inclusion, to nurturing social, physical and emotional wellbeing, the college’s commitment to education goes beyond the curriculum.” PH: 3865 0555 NUDGEE.COM

“Originally, we were hesitant on the idea of going from a house to an apartment, but now looking back we don’t miss it! Everyone we have met is very friendly! We have regular get togethers every month - drinks & nibbles, luncheons, walking groups and aqua aerobics in the pool in Summer!” - Androula & Andrew “The main aim of this purchase was buying lifestyle, not an investment. Maintenance is at a minimum and we can lead interesting and active lives with no worries! We have no regrets, we have achieved all of our expectations!” - Dianne & Ed “[We decided to downsize as] we are getting older - less maintenance and more time to do things. We also wanted to move closer to the city and this was an affordable way to do that. Annie was fantastic and we had every confidence in her! - Lindeen & Larry
