The Valleys film moving rugby legends to tears
DIVORCED IN A DAY

This week... If you have a soft spot for the Valleys Diehards, you are not alone. The Brisbane rugby league club – the city’s first premiers in 1909 – has a loyal fan base that mourned its demise in 1995 and rejoiced in its return to competition in 2015. Now a documentary created by one such fan, Anthony O’Brien (Feature, P8), traces the club’s history through interviews with local league historians and former players, including the great Wally Lewis. By all accounts it’s a terrific flick that not only chronicles Valleys’ golden moments but also revives stories from other great Brisbane clubs – Wests, Easts, and Souths. One for your must-watch list.

Force of nature Kat O’Sullivan’s flair with flowers has landed her high-profile jobs worldwide Emma Schafer Kat O’Sullivan’s passion for floristry has taken her around the globe and landed her A-list clients, including Joanna Lumley and Benedict Cumberbatch. Now the talented 27-year-old is happily back home in Brisbane and putting down roots. She has just opened Garden Graffiti, her floral design studio in Ferny Hills. “Sometimes Brisbane is underestimated as a city of creatives, but I’m determined to showcase a viewpoint that is distinctly reflective of the city. We aren’t here to follow trends,” says Kat, who created the extravagant floral crown for this week’s Brisbane News cover. “I’m ready to paint flowers in a new light. They can be fun and crazy, and not just three carnations in a row.” Kat fell into floristry in 2013 after studies in theatre production left her feeling “bogged down”. “I wanted to use my hands and get some instant gratification,” she says. After certifying in floristry through South Bank TAFE, Kat left for London in 2015, itching to experiment with her new-found skills, and hoping a job opportunity would arise. It did. She soon found herself at Neill Strain Floral Couture London filling orders for well-heeled clients in Mayfair, and freelancing for renowned florist Rebel Rebel, where she eventually landed a full-time job.

“Every bouquet that went out of Rebel Rebel while I was there was mine,” Kat says with pride. “We provided bouquets for Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch and Joanna Lumley, and whenever (British luxury fashion house) Burberry wanted to send a bouquet, they came to us.” When her visa expired, Kat’s floral adventure continued in Tuscany, Italy, where she ran floral workshops and retreats for Rebel Rebel. From there, she planted herself back on Australian soil and freelanced in Melbourne for about eight months before New York had her passport stamped again. While Kat was in the Big Apple, Rebel Rebel created the floral headdress for Beyonce’s US Vogue September 2018 cover. Kat was inspired. “I thought I could come up with something just as dramatic and powerful in my home city with a bunch of creatives who are passionate about what they do,” she says. So she moved home and set about creating the “zesty, colourful and bold” images that would go on to grace our Brisbane News cover and fashion pages (see pages 21 and 22). “I love (fashion designer) Ivy Niu’s clashy bold prints and (photographer) Grace Elizabeth’s imagery, and it all came together very quickly,” she says. gardengraffiti.com.au

Diehards revival Brisbane’s famed Valleys rugby league club is back and firing, thanks to devoted fans keen for more glory days Fiona Purdon

nthony O’Brien can pinpoint the exact moment he became a diehard Valleys fan. The year was 1978 and he was eight years old, sitting on the hill at Albion’s Neumann Oval among thousands of fans watching a teenage Wally Lewis display the jawdropping rugby league skills that would propel him to Immortal status. “In those days he had long blonde hair. He was doing the chip and chase, and all of these spectacular things. I knew he was something special when I was a very young kid,’’ Anthony, now 48, says. “There was excitement and energy being in the crowd in those days because you were so close to the action. There was excitement and energy being in the crowd in those days because you were so close to the action to start following football, and as a fan, I haven’t looked back since.’’ Anthony’s passion for Valleys, founded in 1908 – the first year of rugby league competition in Australia, is evident in his debut documentary, Return of the Diehards: A Rugby League Comeback Story. The film traces the club’s history, including 24 premierships from 39 grand finals, their sad demise in 1995, and their return to the Brisbane rugby league competition in 2015. The Wooloowin local interviewed former players including the title-winning captain from the 1970s and the club’s spiritual leader, Marty Scanlan, local rugby league historians Paul Hayes and Steve Haddan, and Wally Lewis. Channel 9 sports presenter, has fond memories of his A-grade debut as an 18-year-old with “the boys in royal blue”. “I remember some of the older community who would live just up the road and they would scream and yell. The local fans would go to great lengths to make life uncomfortable for the opposition team,’’ Wally laughs. “It’s wonderful to have the documentary. It gives many people the chance to hear the great stories about these great clubs, not only Valleys but Wests, Easts and Souths. It’s great to keep these memories alive.” Valleys died as a club in 1995 due largely, Anthony says, to the success of the Brisbane Broncos. “When the Broncos came into existence in 1988, Valleys had a highly successful team, but the Brisbane competition suffered and crowds dwindled because the Broncos were the biggest show in town,” he says. “The documentary tells the story about the club’s demise, but also the rebuilding, because there has been a big driving force to get Valleys back to where it is. People feel that the club died away once and it’s our responsibility that it still be around in another 100 years.” The film follows last year’s team through the season that saw them capture the premiership. Since 2015, Valleys have played in Brisbane Second Division Rugby League, which is the feeder competition for Queensland’s premier championship, the Intrust Super Cup. Valleys play at Emerson Park, Grange, which is the long-time home ground of their junior squad. “I had a feeling that 2017 would be a good year,” Anthony says. “I followed the team all year, starting with pre-season training with the coach addressing the players. There are also a lot of flashbacks with the old guys.”

Valleys scored Wally as a talented under-13 player because his father, Jim, worked near the Grange clubhouse and also coached reserve grade there. Such were his ties to the club that when Wally later left to play at Wynnum Manly – which offered him money – he still returned every Sunday night for a beer at Valleys’ clubhouse. “The thing I recall most about the club is the spirit that existed in the place. Every Sunday night, everyone enjoyed a beer at the club after the game. Everyone socialised together, from first graders to C graders,”

Wally recalls. “The legend that was associated with Valleys made it so much a place that you never wanted to leave. Valleys has been a big part of my life, I learnt as much about life as of football.’’ Anthony, a part-time schoolteacher who owns AOB Media, has screened Return of the Diehards at club events, including the Old Boys annual gathering. Reviews have been positive. “The Old Boys were riveted to the screen,” Anthony says. “Some told me afterwards they had a good cry when they

Anthony also wanted to show the strong bond between past and present players. The 2017 team includes twins Rowan and Callum Klein, whose father, Russell, is a Valleys club legend. “When the young players understood the history, they realised what it meant to play for Valleys.’’ Wally Lewis was just a teenager when he took the field in Valleys’ epic 1979 grand final triumph before a 30,000-strong crowd at Lang Park. They won 26-0 against the Wayne Bennett-coached Souths Magpies, which featured a 19-year-old Mal Meninga.
watched it at home again.” Club president Danny Walker was one of those overcome with emotion. “The documentary is a fantastic representation of how the club was, and how it is now,” he says. “It captures all the factors that came together to rebuild this club, and also the enormous depth of emotion we feel as Diehards to the club and each other. It’s a vital piece of rugby league history.’’ Return of the Diehards: A Rugby League Comeback Story, $30, aobmedia.com.au

Pitch perfect City newcomer revives the lost art of the long lunch RESTAURANT Tony Harper Some time in the 1980s, Michael’s Riverside opened in Eagle St, with its movie-star looks and unbeatable river views. I was living further afield so I missed it, but I reckon the hubbub must have equalled the discovery of cheese, or Escoffier drowning a peach in raspberry sauce and ice cream. It was luxurious, accessible, and Michael Platsis knew his stuff. Thirty-plus years later, and well after the fringe benefits tax killed off the quaint idea of long lunches, I’m sitting in Persone, the Gambaro family’s newest restaurant. I can’t help making the comparison – gorgeous trappings, the Brisbane River an inescapable part of the mix, and impeccable service. It’s simply three decades more contemporary. Persone is one of several restaurants in the new complex that houses W Brisbane Hotel and Brisbane Quarter, and goodness, it is gorgeous. There’s thick blue carpet, tan leather chairs, enough space between tables to tap dance without bumping an elbow, and an elevated vista that holds in its palm GOMA, QPAC, South Bank, the water, the bridges, and the lights of South Brisbane. It’s very, very spacious, with a walk-in cellar, a bar that looks like a five-star resort, and the restaurant, with wraparound deck. Persone does Italian, and it doesn’t spring many surprises – there’s no liver or kidney, no tail or cheek, not even a truffle or trotter. It treads a fairly safe path (albeit with a nice representation from around
Italy), with a selection of seven quite traditional pizzas looking a little incongruous (but I reckon a necessary part of the mix) in such luxurious digs. The seafood components should be stellar, after all, this is the Gambaros. And the litmus test is a plate of scampi crudi ($32.50, inset) – snippets of meat, others of orange, mint, pistachio and a zesty orange dressing. It’s wildly good; the sort of good that only comes with pristine seafood and a deft touch. And there is plenty more seafood to be had – fish, oysters, a simple but excellent dish of grilled prawns with salsa verde ($35), and scallops in various guises. I opt for a main of rabbit ragu ($29.50) with rigatoni – the quirkiest thing I could find – and, like the scampi, it’s a marvellous rendition, with breadcrumbs adding

texture, pecorino for bite, and a silky, but not overdone, ragu. There is also a very good whole spatchcock ($36) – its skin worked to a deep caramel – served simply with a wedge of lemon, some olive cheeks, preserved lemon, and a blanket of flat-leaf parsley. Primal, simple, lovely. All of the Gambaro restaurants are impeccably run, and if there’s an achilles heel, it’s the notion that a restaurant family that has been banging along for 65 years must be stuck somewhere in the Dark Ages. In some ways, that’s the truth; there’s a definite bent towards formal service, manners, clean fingernails, and treating a guest like … a guest. In which respect, nothing has changed at Persone: the hospitality is pitch perfect, yet it is as contemporary as a brand-new restaurant should be.

RECIPE
Test of time Go big on flavour with this oil-free eggplant salad, says Alastair McLeod My food is in a constant state of flux, but it’s grounded in techniques I gleaned eons ago. I learned to cook eggplant this way at Da Giovanni in Torino. I have no doubt Giovanni still prepares his melanzane the same way today. No oil is used, which instinctively feels wrong, but it’s a fantastic technique that gives the opportunity to introduce big flavours that won’t get lost in an overly oily dish. I also enjoy roasting whole eggplant on the barbecue, before tearing the flesh into smoky lobes. Try misting thin slices with olive oil before grilling them, then strew with chilli, garlic, lemon zest and parsley. Another favoured way is to shallow fry thick plinths in olive oil. Don’t be concerned by how much oil the slices will absorb, as they only take what they need. Celebrate new ideas. Keep learning. You rest, you rust.
SALAD OF EGGPLANT, FETA, PEAS AND HAZELNUTS INGREDIENTS Sea salt 2 large eggplants, peeled and cut into 7mm thick slices 40g hazelnuts, toasted and cracked 50g crumbly feta 50g peas 3tsp pomegranate molasses 1tbs tahini, thinned with warm water Seeds of ¼ pomegranate Extra virgin olive oil Juice of ½ lemon
METHOD Heat a heavy-based frying pan over a medium-high flame. Lightly season the pan and place in slices of eggplant. You will need to do this in batches. Season eggplant and cook until golden, then turn and cook the other side. When soft and cooked through, leave to cool on cake racks. To serve, arrange on a large plate and scatter with nuts, feta and peas. Drizzle with pomegranate molasses and tahini. Scatter with pomegranate seeds, and finally drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice. BOOKS
Spell bound Author Jessica Townsend has conjured up her breakthrough second book about a wondrous teenage magician Fiona Purdon Caloundra author Jessica Townsend didn’t believe in the dreaded second book syndrome – until she embarked on Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow, the sequel to her best-selling debut, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow. “The best part is, I won’t have to write a second book again,’’ she laughs. “They say you have your whole life to write the first book, then six months to write your second one. I took 10 years to write my first book: I didn’t have an audience, editor or agent. I could incubate ideas for a while before nailing things down in the plot. With this book, I know other people will read it very soon, which creates expectations.’’ Nevermoor – the tale of Morrigan, a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world – has sold more than 130,000 copies since its release last year. It has also attracted a 20th Century Fox film deal. Jessica, 33, started developing the intended nine-book series when she was 18, while working at Australia Zoo at Beerwah. “I would be on my lunch breaks in the zoo’s food court. Looking over one side would be the crocodiles, and the kangaroos on the other,” she says. “I would be working on the plot and character ideas and dreaming of having a book deal one day.’’
In the second novel, Morrigan discovers the pros and cons of being a wundersmith – the most powerful kind of magician – as a member of the elite Wundrous Society, where she receives training as one of the most talented teenagers in Nevermoor. With her guardian, Jupiter North, away investigating the disappearance of highprofile people, Morrigan spends time with her best friend, Hawthorne, a dragon rider.
My ultimate dream (is) that one day a child comes up to me and says my book is their favourite book Living in London for part of each year gives Jessica inspiration for the fantastical realm of Nevermoor. The rest of her time is spent on the Sunshine Coast, where she grew up the youngest of five siblings. Life changed dramatically when Jessica scored her six-figure deal for Nevermoor two years ago. Now she is a full-time writer in the tradition of her literary heroes, John Marsden, J. K. Rowling and Louisa May Alcott. “My ultimate dream would be that one day a child comes up to me and says my book is their favourite book,’’ Jessica says.

TURN OF MIDNIGHT Minette Walters
THE ARSONIST: A MIND ON FIRE
BRIDGE OF CLAY Marcus Zusak
FRAGMENTS Toni Jordan
Chloe Hooper Hamish Hamilton, $35
Picador, $33
Allen & Unwin, $33 This historical thriller follows on from last year’s bestseller The Last Hours, in which Lady Anne of Develish helped save most of the occupants of her self-quarantined Dorset village from the Black Death plague in 1348. Now Lady Anne and former serf Thaddeus Thurkell hatch a scheme to secure the independence of their village. It is a changed world that Thaddeus explores when the village comes out of isolation. Novelist Minette adapts the well-crafted plots and carefully drawn characters from her psychological crime writing to the historical genre.
On a scorching February day in 2009, on what became known as Black Saturday, a man lit two ferocious fires in regional Victoria, killing 173 people and devastating the landscape. Based on this crime, The Arsonist takes the form of a real-life thriller, a whodunit that also seeks to learn why he did it. Chloe (The Tall Man) traces the case from the crime’s inception – those first moments of the fire flickering to life, and the first minutes of the police investigation. A stunning achievement displaying Chloe’s talent for lyrical expression. This is writing at its best.
More than a decade in the making, this sweeping novel immediately takes the reader into the ramshackle world of the five Dunbar brothers. Theirs is a family that’s steeped in tragedy – their mother is dead, their father has fled. The brothers love and fight, and they learn to reckon with the adult world. But it is the quiet one, Clay, a talented athlete, who will build a bridge to help his family deal with their troubled past. Literary star Markus (The Book Thief) makes his long-awaited publishing return with this profoundly heartfelt and inventive novel, which grabs you from the first page.
Text, $30 Enigmatic author Inga Karlson died in a warehouse fire in New York in the 1930s, along with her publisher and all copies of her second novel. Despite publishing only one book, Inga’s legend has only grown since her tragic death. Fast forward to 1986 and she is the subject of a Brisbane exhibition. Local bookseller Caddie Walker is a committed fan, but after meeting a stranger at the exhibition, she is thrust into the role of detective, investigating Inga’s death. This novel is Brisbane-bred, Melbourne-based Toni’s fifth book. It’s an unputdownable pleasure, which examines the true meaning of love and friendship.

About a boy

A film about a preacher’s son outed as gay is shockingly close to home BOY ERASED (MA15+) hhhhj Director: Joel Edgerton Starring: Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman Joel Edgerton finds the soft centre of hardcore “gay conversion therapy” in this powerful coming-of-age story. By treating all of his characters with respect – and even, dare I say it, compassion – the writer-actor-director offers up a thoughtful study of faith, courage and prejudice. Based on Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir of the same name, Boy Erased honours the core Christian values of forgiveness and tolerance, even as it exposes terrible transgressions made in the religion’s name. Edgerton says he took his cue from

his subject, and Boy Erased paints Conley as an extraordinarily empathetic young man. But that doesn’t negate his increasingly solid sense of his own self-worth, and that’s what makes the unassuming 19-year-old college jock such a fascinating protagonist. Boy Erased isn’t a story of victims and aggressors so much as a gently subversive tale of what happens when a young man stands his ground. Jared Eamons (Hedges) is the son of small-town Baptist minister Marshall Eamons (Crowe) and his cheerfully compliant wife, Nancy (Kidman). After an ugly incident instigated by a fellow student, Jared is outed to his family as gay. A devastated Marshall turns to his fellow clergymen for counsel.
Since the church regards homosexuality as a sin, Jared must be cured of his “affliction”. If he doesn’t attend the centre run by Victor Sykes (Edgerton), Jared will be ostracised by his family, community and church. What’s perhaps most shocking about this psychologically crude and primitive institution is the era in which it exists. Boy Erased takes place in a near-contemporary setting. As a director, Edgerton doesn’t so much give his cast free rein – moments of high drama are tightly controlled – as allow them the room to do what it is they do best. The film’s success rests with Hedges, who, like his character, conducts himself with quiet assurance and steady intelligence. A compelling true-life drama. VICKY ROACH
Lassie it ain’t. This powerful documentary about a bunch of disenfranchised youths and their adopted dogs is a much more feral animal – and that’s what gives it so much bite. Setting the rough-talking, soft-hearted tone of the piece is maverick jackaroo Bernie Shakeshaft, who runs a youth program from a shed on the outskirts of Armidale, NSW. Although he’s mighty comfortable in the saddle, and his Akubra has obviously weathered countless Australian summers, Shakeshaft is about as far removed from the traditional image of the laconic, emotionally arrested bushman as a bloke can humanly get. Sitting around his flickering campfire, even taciturn teenagers start talking. One of Backtrack Boys’ many strengths is the way in which it challenges Australian male stereotypes. These troubled youths are vulnerable, emotionally articulate and insightful. But that doesn’t necessarily stop them from making some dreadful mistakes. Shakeshaft’s main focus, he says, is keeping them alive. And the tears start to well as he recalls the many funerals he has attended. In Backtrack Boys, director Catherine Scott focuses on a handful of Shakeshaft’s charges, establishing what appears to be an extraordinary level of trust with her subjects. Backtrack Boys is an extremely persuasive argument for rehabilitation rather than punitive sentencing. A compelling, surprising, inspiring real-life drama. VICKY ROACH

ARTS
Freedom found A late start as a painter opens a whole new world for Sean Leahy Phil Brown Sean Leahy’s creative brilliance is demonstrated daily. His cartoons for The Courier-Mail are delightful and thought provoking, and they skewer politics and our society with great skill. Sean is also the co-creator of the comic strip Beyond the Black Stump, which he created in 1985 with the late Gerard Piper. As a departure from his cartooning work, Sean, 60, has sketched and daubed watercolours to satisfy his creative urges. He recently moved into painting with acrylics, and that has been a revelation. The result is an explosion of creativity that this week leads to his first exhibition as a painter. Dreamscapes: Broome to Brisbane is a late debut, he confesses, but with his new-found love of painting, it won’t be the last we see from this Brisbane artist. “I’m really enjoying myself working with acrylic paint,” Sean says. “I’m kicking myself that I didn’t do it years ago.” It was his involvement as an artist mentor for Anglicare’s annual Arts & Minds mental health and wellbeing initiative that gave him the impetus to begin using acrylics – and it’s been a revelation. “I love painting,” Sean says. “I get transported away. It’s better than meditating. There’s a human connection to your interior life which you can get from art, and it can be very healing and illuminating.” Sean says painting is more nuanced than cartooning. His exhibition, which opens this week at Aspire Gallery in Paddington,

COLOUR BURST ... Sean Leahy at work in his studio; his Dreamscapes show includes Black Hole (detail, above) and Gate 2. features evocative images inspired by his own life. It features motifs from his childhood in Broome, Western Australia, where he was one of only two white pupils among indigenous classmates at St Mary’s school. There are also Celtic symbols – a reflection of his Irish heritage. “The Celtic symbols are mixed in with an
indigenous flavour,” Sean says. “It’s a hybrid of identities. “There’s more freedom in painting than cartooning, more poetry. There is a little bit of social commentary too, and some of that is in your face, while other works are more of an emotional response.” They are certainly colourful and
intriguing. Black Hole, for example, is “Stephen Hawking’s idea of heaven”. It features the artist’s cat in a spacesuit with a fishbowl on his head. Go figure. Dreamscapes: Broome to Brisbane, Nov 7-17, Aspire Gallery, 53 Kennedy Tce, Paddington. aspiregallery.com.au

FLORIST KAT O’SULLIVAN’S TIPS FOR WEARING FLOWERS
3. Using dried materials is on-trend, so look at the texture you can add to your crown with grasses, billy buttons and everlasting daisies.
1. The opportunities to use flowers in fashion are endless – think necklaces, belts and rings. When I was working in London, we created “Flowers in a Handbag”, a beautiful arrangement delivered in a bespoke, vintage handbag. I think that is a perfect example of fashion and flowers.
4. For a simpler approach, wire the stem of a big-headed flower, such as a rose, and add a smaller flower or foliage to soften the bloom and add movement. Secure in the hair with bobby pins.
2. If making a flower crown, group your flowers together to create points of interest, and use different materials to add texture and movement. Florists wire each stem, and there are plenty of YouTube tutorials on this. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

Yen for culture Experience the art of the Japanese tea ceremony, or shop ’til you drop. You can do both in one day from The Peninsula Tokyo Phil Brown
I
had my heart set on seeing some kabuki in Tokyo. But let me give you a tip, book early if you want to do that. Staying at The Peninsula Tokyo, at the entrance of the Marunouchi and Ginza districts, we were just a few hundred metres from Kabukiza, Japan’s top kabuki theatre. They were just about to start a new show featuring several of the country’s top stars, which is obviously why it was booked out. A month ahead.
Architect Kazukiyo Sato’s vision was for a hotel resembling a Japanese lantern and indeed it does
And despite being busy, it all feels more sedate than elsewhere in Asia. Japanese crowds are so polite. I love that. And I love staying somewhere where you can just walk places. If you need to catch the subway, Hibiya train station is downstairs, via the hotel’s basement level. And Tokyo Station is just around the corner. The Peninsula Tokyo is a stunning building. Architect Kazukiyo Sato’s vision was for a hotel resembling a Japanese lantern, and indeed it does. Often The Peninsula Hotel Group chooses heritage properties, but this one was purpose built
What to do instead? Go to UNIQLO. But you can do that here in Brisbane, right? Maybe ... but UNIQLO Ginza on Chuo Dori is the mothership, the largest of its stores worldwide – as a disembodied voice constantly reminds you as you browse. It’s 12 floors of retail therapy. Culture is fine, but sometimes you just want to shop, and being on holidays, you actually have the time. The shopping in Ginza is terrific, and from The Peninsula you’re in striking distance. There’s UNIQLO, Muji, Gap, and every other store your heart desires. Pop into the major Japanese department store Mitsukoshi, too. Its basement food hall is mind-blowing.

just over 10 years ago, and it’s a 24-storey modern design icon. We loved having a view out over the Imperial Palace and its grounds. Take a walk in the Imperial Palace East Garden if you get a chance. It’s a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle. Mind you, the hustle and bustle in Tokyo never feels as gruelling as it can elsewhere. Even in busy parts of the city, like Shinjuku, it never feels as crazy as, say, Bangkok or Hong Kong. Make a point of visiting Asakusa to take in the splendour of Senso-ji, Tokyo’s most sacred and spectacular temple. The traditional streets from the train station to the temple offer an enticing taste of the past. Not far from the hotel – a short taxi ride – is Hamarikyu Gardens, once part of an old Shogun’s palace complex. There’s a lovely tea house here where you can practise your green tea drinking, with a handy sheet explaining the etiquette. This recent visit was our first family trip to Japan, and my first time in the country since the age of 12. So it’s been a while. When I was a boy, we stayed at the Palace Hotel Tokyo, which is just along from The Peninsula. Both overlook the palace, and sitting in our room in the afternoon, sipping tea and gazing out at the vision splendid, was not hard to take. Like most hotels in The Peninsula
The bar features a forest of cherry blossom trees made of glass. We dined on red snow crab cakes … Group, the Tokyo property is a bit of a onestop shop, and as with others, the Lobby, with its high tea, is a feature. And each Peninsula has a signature restaurant. In Tokyo it’s Peter, named after the hotel group’s chief operating officer, Peter Borer. Peter has breathtaking 180degree views of the Japanese capital, and it’s an artwork in itself. It was designed by US and Canadian architecture and design team Yabu Pushelberg, and the bar features a forest of cherry blossom trees made of glass. We dined on red snow crab cakes, Hokkaido scallops, Kobe beef, and other delicacies. The hotel’s other dining options include The Peninsula Boutique and Cafe. If you have a sweet tooth like me, this is a great spot for tea or coffee and cake – a nice sugar hit on your next shopping excursion. UNIQLO Ginza here we come. Again. im and Christine’s new home at Coorparoo, designed by architect Alexandra Buchanan, responds elegantly to a unique suburban setting. The site takes in city vistas and rear parkland views while negotiating a steep slope. Rooms are positioned with views and orientation in mind, but other spatial strategies are at play. “Jim and Christine were seeking to keep the family together as much as possible, while also giving their children (soon to be young adults) their own private space … and, potentially, their future families,” Alexandra says. “So the architectural form was generated from a spatial idea of cascading floor plates emphasising the relationships between people and their shared and private space.” From the street the house appears both sober and assertive, with drama and awe reserved for the experience of stepping inside. “The house reveals itself immediately at the front door. It is voluminous!” Alexandra says. “The view from the entrance gallery across the double-height living space to trees beyond tells the story of the site gymnastics.” As the view unfolds across the courtyard a level below, staircases spiral downwards, grouping rooms according to floor levels. At ground level, living areas step down with the natural fall of the ground to a private, grass-covered courtyard. “The house is incredibly open at its core,” Alexandra says. “(The courtyard) is wrapped by more private or intimate spaces. We’ve deliberately played with what is hidden and what is revealed. This gives an incredible sense of calm to the central spaces … having a sense of other people
busying themselves elsewhere, whether through visual glimpses or sound.” Family gathering spaces are next to the courtyard, with the focus on the living room. “It is the main focus from, and to, all spaces, emphasised by its height and volume, and sitting front and centre to the courtyard and trees beyond. It is the hinge and pivot point of the whole building and … is the perfect communal meeting point.”
The house reveals itself immediately at the front door. It is voluminous! The kitchen and dining room pavilion shelters the western side of the courtyard, ensuring its privacy and coolness. Light enters from a high level, and on the courtyard side, the facade slides away to open the kitchen pavilion to the lawn. Two large steps extend from the living room to the courtyard. The garden at the centre of the plan promotes air movement inside and upstairs. Spatial complexity is balanced by visual cohesion achieved through the use of a monochrome palette and natural finishes. “The material palette is robust and textural,” Alexandra says. “We preferred low-maintenance materials with adaptable doors and glazing to serve through all weather conditions and seasons. “Timber, masonry, glass, steel and fibre cement panels provide a solid but textural warmth, serving as a muted backdrop to the inhabitants’ personal artefacts.” Architect: Alexandra Buchanan Architecture, alexandrabuchanan.com Photography: Jessie Prince

SHOPPING
Personal service A friendly hello goes a long way, so shop locally to support small businesses and enjoy being part of the community A series of “For lease” signs may soon pop up along your favourite local retail strip, with a new survey revealing a third of Australian small business operators feel they’re at risk of becoming insolvent in the next three to five years. While a growing number of shoppers say they prefer to patronise small businesses ahead of large retailers, fewer are walking the talk, with a 12 per cent drop in the frequency of spending in small businesses over the past two years. November marks the month of Shop Small, a national movement to shine a light on the importance of Australia’s 2.1 million small businesses and to encourage Australians to support them. Initiative founder American Express has commissioned a report, The Economy of Shopping Small: Back Your Backyard, which examines sentiment among small business owners and shoppers. The report found three in five small businesses are experiencing flat or declining
revenue growth. Operators say consumers are their most important backers. “This research is a timely reminder that none of us can take small businesses for granted,” says Lisa Belcher, vice-president of Small Merchants for American Express. “Each and every one of us can make a difference by ensuring ‘shopping small’ is part of our regular shopping routine.” Whether it’s buying your bread from the bakery instead of a major supermarket, or switching from a takeaway chain to your local family-run cafe, the impact of supporting small businesses is far reaching. Along with ensuring convenience and character in the heart of our communities, they are also the lifeblood of our economy, with Australia’s 3.3 million small and medium businesses representing 99 per cent of all businesses nationally, according to Treasury estimates. Combined, these businesses employ 5.7 million Australians – about half the nation’s workforce.
Small businesses are largely family run, and many rely on relatives to keep them afloat, with family members working in almost 60 per cent of small businesses. This means that by supporting a local business, you’re potentially helping a neighbour, teammate or a family from school. “By shopping locally – at your corner grocer, cafe, pharmacy, bakery or hairdresser – in November, you will be supporting grassroots growth and community engagement,” says Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise

LAST WORD
Phil Brown As soon as we got home, we both washed our hands like doctors preparing for surgery. Sick people should not go to classical music concerts It was an awkward moment. I was at a function at QPAC and was passing the men’s room on my way out when a leading impresario whom I knew emerged and thrust his hand forward for me to shake it. What could I do? I grasped his paw, only to find it was still wet. The good news is that meant he had washed his hands. He apologised for the dampness, I smiled sweetly and we exchanged pleasantries, fleetingly. As we parted I made a quick detour into the men’s room and washed my hands. Thoroughly. Because I happen to be something of a germaphobe. There’s a wonderful episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in which Larry David runs into Ben Stiller in the foyer of a theatre in Los Angeles. Stiller has just sneezed and Larry has seen him cup his hand to his nose. Ben extends his hand to shake but Larry refuses because, as he explains later, it was a wet sneeze. He’s not
V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
going to shake hands with anyone after one of them. Stiller is insulted but Larry defends himself, and frankly, I’m with Larry. I was thinking about all this the other evening when I went to a concert and had to leave at interval because the people behind me had insisted on bringing a sick six-year-old. I spent the first half of the show listening to sniffling and nose blowing, and every few minutes there would be a sneeze. I felt the droplets hitting the back of my head. I leant forward to try to get out of range ... to no avail. At interval I vacated with my son, who agreed it was intolerable. As soon as we got home, we both washed our hands like doctors preparing for surgery. Sick people should not go, or be taken, to classical music concerts. If you have the flu, or even a cough, stay home. At a Queensland Symphony Orchestra concert the other night I was mortified to hear people
hacking all through the performance. All the quiet moments were punctuated by coughing, and the folks from ABC Classic FM, who were recording the performance, must have been tearing their hair out. I must confess, I have been to a concert with a cough myself, but once it came on, I had the decency to leave. If you’re sick, you should stay home. But if people do venture out and they are ill, please keep them away from me. I was introduced to someone at another event recently and it wasn’t until I was halfway through shaking hands with them that I realised they were crook. Just as I finalised the handshake, the gentleman I was meeting for the first time informed me he was “under the weather”. “Now you tell me!” I said, turning and walking away immediately. I went straight to the bathroom and washed my hands several times to disinfect myself. Was that rude? Who cares.

Cooking appliances including a hotplate and grill feature on the bench, which is complemented by a stainless steel rangehood. Other Gaggenau appliances including double ovens and coffee machine also complement the area. Next to the kitchen is a bar area, featuring two built-in drinks fridges, glass shelving and a glass rack. From the sitting area in front of the bar, sliding doors open to a Juliet balcony, which also enjoys river views.
To the left of the floorplan are the sleeping quarters down a hallway adjacent to the main entry. The main bedroom has a large walk-in wardrobe along with a built-in wardrobe. There is also a luxurious limestonefinished ensuite. Nearby, two further bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and are serviced by a bathroom. Another bedroom has built-in wardrobes, sliding glass doors opening to a balcony and an ensuite.
