This week... Her chandelier-style earrings, dotted with gems and seed pearls, hark back to a grander place and time – like something you may have spotted adorning the ear of a great lady in a Renaissance painting. So it naturally follows that Brisbane jewellery designer Christie Nicolaides would be the go-to for many style arbiters of today, including Carrie Bickmore, Zoe Foster Blake and Katy Perry. Brisbane News writer Belinda Seeney sat down with the local talent (P8) on the eve of the opening of her first bricks and mortar store – a richly layered space in the city that promises to be every bit as opulent as one of her designs.

FIRST PERSON
Belinda Seeney For weeks at a time, the Aries population of Bundaberg appeared destined for good luck, wild romance, career advancement, peak health and sudden wealth Horoscopes are my secret shame. I’m a logical, practical person. I don’t believe in fate or divine determination. I’m much more of a tread your own path, make your own luck, choose your own adventure kind of person. But in a fit of complete hypocrisy, I’m also an absolute sucker for reading my horoscope. Each week, I swing by editor Leesa’s desk to pick up a glossy Brisbane News fresh from the printers. I admire the cover and before she has time to respond, I’ve flipped the magazine on its face and am scanning the inside back page for the drop on how my week – and that of one-twelfth of the population – will pan out. And it’s not just this magazine. I pore over my predictions in the daily newspapers, the Sunday lift-outs, and even a Twitter account that chews up and spits out my astrological
assertions every hour, on the hour. I hold little stock in the content of these horoscopes – the guilty pleasure lies in the ritual of plucking out the frivolous in a sea of significance. Sometimes the “exciting” or “promising” week ahead is the astrological pep talk I need to propel myself forward on a depressing Monday morning. At other times, the comedic value of its wild inaccuracies is a soothing mind balm: “a great week for financial windfalls” the same week every single utility, insurance, school fee and credit card bill is due. And then there are those obscure predictions that are so nonsensical they make the blather coming out of Canberra – recorded and reported in the more important pages of the newspaper – seem level-headed and sensible.
In the spirit of this full and frank confession, I must offload another burden I’ve been carrying on my conscience for nigh on two decades. During my formative years as a print journalist at a regional daily newspaper, I was tasked with transferring horoscope copy from the news wires to the next day’s news pages. Now, I never fabricated the content – no fake news here – but I did occasionally … err … mislabel the horoscopes. I would peruse the daily readings, single out the best one and swap it with my own star sign. For weeks at a time, the Aries population of Bundaberg appeared destined for long stretches of good luck, wild romance, career advancement, peak health and sudden wealth. Oh, and their lucky colour was always red.

Magic spell Ballet star Laura Hidalgo’s own fairytale romance inspires her Cinderella debut Fiona Purdon Laura Hidalgo is no stranger to fairytales – both real and make believe. The Queensland Ballet star, who will make her title role debut in Cinderella this month, found her own happily-ever-after upon meeting her now husband, chef David Fiumara. “Cinderella is the ultimate princess because she doesn’t start out like one. She starts out as a real and normal girl … then something amazing happens, which I can relate to,’’ she says. Laura’s “fairytale’’ moment occurred when she met David quite by chance while buying a coffee at a South Bank cafe. “We saw each other and that was it. Two months later he had moved to Brisbane and gave up a great job in Byron Bay,’’ she says. “Our love story progressed and now we are married. We are living our dream. For each role you draw on your own emotions and experience, and I’ve learnt that amazing things can happen to normal people.’’ Argentine-born Laura, 34, who lives at Hamilton, has spent more than half of her life dancing around the world, including at the American Ballet Theatre in 2002. She has remained in Brisbane for more than three years after marrying David in October two years ago. “Even though I miss my big family in Argentina, I’m loving having a place I can call home. David has not missed a production,’’ she says. “David also cooks really yummy food – I don’t want to know about the calories. “I’ve got an awesome metabolism and I can eat everything I want, so it’s lucky I married a chef.” Laura is thrilled to be dancing the role of Cinderella after she missed the company’s original 2013 production of the Ben Stevenson-choreographed ballet. “Ben Stevenson’s ballets are beautiful to dance. He has a great knowledge of partnering and is great at storytelling. Cinderella is funny and a crowd-pleaser. “I love telling stories on stage – that is what drives me. It makes the difficulty of the steps disappear when you have the story to tell.”

Artisan of opulence Mediterranean holidays in the sun inspire Christie Nicolaides’ dazzling jewellery designs, worn by women the world over Belinda Seeney It’s yet another cool winter morning and the wind whips through Brisbane’s CBD, its chill and ferocity amplified by rows of high-rises funnelling it down Edward St. Yet there’s a warmth emanating from the basement of Christie Nicolaides’ soon-to-open shopfront. The grey day is no match for the Brisbane-born-and-raised jewellery designer, radiant in a floral Dolce & Gabbana dress with colourful sandals, a vase of spring blooms brightening her work table. “It’s always summer somewhere,” Christie, 31, says. She’s not referring to this hidden spot of colour in the city, but rather to the aesthetic she employs when designing her range of striking earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces and headpieces. “Live like you’re on holidays all the time! That’s the concept I work to.” Her opulent pieces, bejewelled with turquoise, amethyst, rose quartz and pearls, and finished in polished gold and silver-plated brass, are inspired by her own travels through Europe: to the Greek villages of her grandparents, the coastal towns of Italy and Spain, and the artisan hubs of Turkey. “I think that’s where the great love of jewellery developed. Going there and seeing the way Athenian and European women wear jewellery … which is very,
very different to the way we wear it,” Christie muses. Her standout designs have won firm favour with women the world over since the self-taught jeweller opened a pop-up store on James St in late 2013. A stylist by trade, Christie was consulting with leading fashion and retail brands including Easton Pearson and Westfield when she took a gamble on her first collection. Encouraged by her now-husband Stephen Sourris, she invested “a huge amount” of her savings into bringing her design sketches to life. “I realised there was a gap in the market. I couldn’t find what I was looking for (so) I created exactly what I wanted to wear. “I put all my money into it and thought, well, even if it doesn’t work out, at least I’ll have a fantastic collection of earrings. “It was pretty apparent after that first pop-up there was a market of women who really liked it and that gave me the confidence to put everything behind it … and start building a brand.” She hosted a few more Brisbane popups before she launched her online store, introducing her range to the rest of Australia and the world. “My aesthetic hasn’t really strayed that much,” she says of the ensuing five years. “I would like to think that every
collection – I hope – gets better and I get better at developing the pieces: making them easier to wear, lighter, more fluid, more feminine.” Christie rode a similar learning curve

impossible to replicate. “I just never took no for an answer. I’d push and push and push, then redevelop, and now I’ve got to a point where I know the lengths I can push to make my jewellery.”
Her stones and jewels are sourced globally and her pieces are manufactured throughout Europe; her supply chain finessed through countless overseas trips, factory visits, messages, video calls and
translators. “It has taken years to develop the relationships I have with the people who make my jewellery. It’s a very important thing for me to know who is making it and I’ve now found a really great
team. I know these people, they’re familyrun factories and … as the years go on, they understand my aesthetic.” High-profile fans include The Project’s Carrie Bickmore, who wore Christie’s designs to the Logies, as well as on the cover of Marie Claire magazine, and celebrities including Jennifer Hawkins, Kelly Rowland, Paris Jackson, Kate Ritchie and Samantha Harris. Myer has sold her pieces since January 2017 and she is stocked by The Conran Shop in Paris, London and New York; by Ounass in the Middle East; and on luxury fashion websites Moda Operandi and FWRD by Elyse Walker. Now, five years after launching her label, she is about to open her first permanent bricks and mortar store in the city where it all began. “I’m from here, I’m based here, it makes sense for me to open my first store here and why not?” says Christie, who grew up in Highgate Hill with older brother Nicholas, younger brother James, and parents John and Angela. “We’ve got a very sophisticated customer base and … if this is a success, I’d love to open a store in Sydney, Melbourne or even overseas.”

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE The retail space on the corner of Edward and Margaret streets will double as the business’ headquarters when it opens next month. A compact shopfront at street level flows to a curved staircase that winds down to a basement-level retail space. New pink marble flooring offsets its dark timber beams and exposed brick. At one end of this subterranean space are shelves of clear plastic tubs filled with a sparkling bounty of Christie’s signature pieces. She lives in an apartment above the shop with Stephen – a joint-owner of Brisbane’s Five Star Cinemas chain with his brother Peter. She and Stephen met at a Christmas party in 2010 and married in June 2017. Their big engagement party in 2015 at the Irish Club’s former Tara House, since converted by the Sourris brothers to The Elizabeth Picture Theatre, was tempered by a smaller wedding ceremony at the Greek Orthodox Church of St George at South Brisbane and 120-person reception in Queensland Art Gallery’s Watermall. Christie travels abroad at least twice a year, for up to six weeks at a time, and says Stephen joins her when he can. “He’s a great support and because he’s run many businesses, sometimes he’s the

While overseeing the finishing touches to her store, Christie also launches her Marbella cruise collection this month, evoking the Spanish coastline of the 1960s. She’s also incorporating enamels into her February 2019 collection, sketching designs for her August 2019 collection, refining her first bridal collection – inspired by her own nuptials – and tinkering with introducing a range of eyewear, handbags and clothing. “As a designer – and this is why I’m really excited about the shop – it’s great to hear your customer; to be in that space where somebody picks up a piece and says, ‘oh, that’s heavy’ or ‘that’s light’ or even ‘not quite’, and you start to understand how to better the product and make it more universal. PROFILE
Time traveller Fashion designer Laura Gangemi traces her classic aesthetic back to her mother’s wardrobe Hannah Davies Laura Gangemi was always the kid in the highrise pants and knitted vests – and she loved it. Growing up she would rummage through the house looking for her mum’s clothes from the ’70s and ’80s, and credits that first foray into fashion with the designer she is today. “A lot of where I get the emphasis on timeless styles goes back to that and my love of the past,” she says. “I always wanted to be a fashion designer. I drew dresses in primary school, and my nonnas and aunties were seamstresses, so were probably my biggest mentors.” The 29-year-old finally got her wish when she launched her high-end fashion label Rudi Miro in November last year, after years of working in marketing for Lorna Jane. Now she’s taking orders from the UK, China and the US, and is excited about her latest collection. “My ‘aha’ moment was probably when people kept asking me what I was wearing and complimenting me. That was when I realised a lot of people don’t know how to style themselves. “I’ve always been a person who dresses for me, without following trends, so it’s about enabling people to do that. It’s about getting that base
wardrobe and then using trend pieces to elevate it. One trend piece I would advise would be the palazzo pant. It’s a classic.” Laura, who lives in New Farm with husband Ben Pullen and their two French bulldogs, says the collection is focused on mix and match. “I’ve gone for warm whites and khakis with grey. The collection has an urban feel but it’s also soft, which makes it transeasonal. My favourite piece is the shirt dress. It’s great for any time of year and is the first thing I put in my collection. “You can wear it over jeans or tights and boots, and in the summer with sneakers. Or I dress it up by wearing stilettos at night to go to dinner.” Keen to support the Australian fashion industry, it took Laura a year to launch. “I wanted to make sure all my machinists were from Brisbane. It’s more costly, but the finish is fantastic.” As for the name, Laura reveals it’s an alias. “Rudi was a nickname from my girlfriends before I got married, and Joan Miro is one of my favourite artists,” she says. rudimiro.com

QUALITY LIVING BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Ascot House: New chapter for a city favourite It is one of our capital’s most historical locales – now its reputation for its standard of living has been further enhanced with the completion of this unrivalled residential development
A
s one of Brisbane’s most historically significant addresses, Ascot is wellknown for having a unique blend of houses and architecture that exude charm and sophistication. Racecourse Rd is the area’s original promenade, shopping street and dining hub, and today, it is still a bustling commercial centre. Thanks to the recent completion of Racecourse Village Shopping Centre, the suburb is continuing to offer its residents unrivalled amenity and convenience. With old grand homes on large blocks of land, the area has drawn increased investment in recent times, offering alternative residential options for those wanting to remain in the area. Heritage buildings and historic sites dot the suburb, combining with the new to create a suburb where contemporary melds with classical charm. Since 1863, Eagle Farm racecourse has called this area home – with the name Ascot given to the suburb as a tongue-incheek reference to Ascot in England and its prestigious Ascot racecourse. It’s no surprise then, that the Brisbane Racing Club in particular has been an integral part of the community for more than 153 years. Nearly 10 years ago, the club made the decision to invest $1.2 billion in the redevelopment of its land around the Eagle Farm and Doomben racecourses.
Its masterplan to build a shopping centre, a sports club and hotel, childcare services, a retirement and aged care facility as well as residential offerings has further cemented Ascot’s reputation as a premier place to live. The recent completion of Ascot House – the first stage of the prestigious Ascot Green residential development undertaken by Mirvac – has already drawn significant interest from local buyers. Mirvac Queensland’s general manager of residential development, Warwick Bible, says the first stage of Ascot Green is Ascot House, offering one, two and threebedroom apartments overlooking Eagle Farm racecourse. It’s attracting buyers from the local area and surrounds who come from big family homes and want to downsize without compromising on space, style or privacy,” Bible says. “With 90-apartments in Ascot House, the building is geared towards owneroccupiers, as a premium has been placed on ensuring apartments are oversized and with extensive communal facilities for residents to enjoy.” He says being trackside means residents benefit from expansive green outlooks, with each apartment designed with oversized balconies. Another drawcard for prospective buyers is the newly opened, $40 million Racecourse Village Shopping Centre,
featuring a major supermarket and 18 specialty retail outlets, including alfresco dining and medical services. “Ascot Green residents benefit from the amazing lifestyle amenities on their doorstep including the restaurant-lined Racecourse Rd and the new Racecourse Village retail precinct a mere 700m away,” Bible says. The Racecourse Rd precinct is packed with an eclectic range of businesses, eateries and services providers. It stretches from Hamilton at the Brisbane River to Eagle Farm racecourse and hosts markets, race day parties, festivals and all manner of communityminded events. Brisbane Racing Club chairman Neville Bell says he’s seen a visible uplift in visitors to the area, and believes the completion of Ascot House has set the precedent for additional investment in the area.

Tell me true Theatre director Dan Evans gives children the stage to pose the questions they’ve been dying to ask Fiona Purdon
ASK AWAY … Dan Evans has never been busier. Picture: AAP/Renae Droop
“The world’s greatest string quartet.” THE TELEGRAPH UK
Local dynamo Dan Evans is fearless when it comes to innovative theatre. And with his latest Brisbane Festival offering I’ve Been Meaning to Ask You, the theatre producer and director is pushing the boundaries again by shining the spotlight on 20 children aged nine to 13. “We put people on stage who we are not used to seeing on stage. We thought, ‘Let’s give kids a microphone and voice, and see what happens’,’’ Dan says. “It’s a daring experiment. A nine-year-old’s view of the world is unique and insightful … and just as important as everyone else’s.’’ Dan, with his The Good Room cofounder Amy Ingram, auditioned dozens of candidates to find a “funny, intelligent and diverse” mix of children for the show. “We weren’t looking for someone to play Matilda or Oliver, but we were after thinkers and dreamers – kids with opinions about the world who are smart, intelligent and fun,’’ he says. Dan, 34, of Coorparoo, says children had a great time coming up with questions they wanted to ask adults including: How come adults drink to have fun? What was life like before the internet? Does it suck putting on makeup? “We wanted to know what kids want to know about the world. “The first part of the show is kids reading out the answers to the questions and the second part of the show concerns kids giving advice to the audience.” The concept is a riff on their 2014 Brisbane Festival hit I Want to Know What Love Is, which raised questions about love by giving a platform to “ordinary people and ordinary experiences’’. A 100-plusshow national tour starts next year. “We have tapped into something
universal. When our work travels to another state, we are getting standing ovations, which is powerful and makes you feel proud,” he says. Dan won the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award (2014-15) and teaches at QUT. He has always been determined to defy “the great southern drift’’. Instead of moving to Sydney or Melbourne, he has carved out a niche in Brisbane theatre. Now he has never been busier. “I’m definitely more productive with the sunlight and it’s more conducive to getting out of bed. Brisbane has a really distinctive artistic voice. The work we make is irreverent and fun and very physical. We don’t take ourselves too seriously.
I’m definitely more productive with the sunlight and it’s more conducive to getting out of bed “You can always tell when a work comes from Brisbane – there is a sweetness and saltiness.’’ Dan has also worked in television including on Big Brother at Dreamworld, but always had his heart set on a career in theatre, being “obsessed with how stories are made and put together”. “There’s something absolutely magical about sharing the same air with an audience night after night in theatre. “Things happen in that moment and you have to be there.” I’ve Been Meaning to Ask You, Sep 26-29, Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove. brisbanefestival.com.au

FOOD + DRINK
Triple treat With river views, terrific food and seamless service, it’s worth ducking into the city branch of The Farm RESTAURANT Tony Harper Avoiding Byron Bay is a rote pastime for me. That aside, a couple of years ago my family did spend time revelling in its beaches and hinterland, including a trip to The Farm, perfectly described by a friend as a rural theme park. It’s no serious farm – not by a long shot – but a well-intentioned, fun venue, the highlight of which is the restaurant Three Blue Ducks. We now have Three Blue Ducks in Brisbane, on the third floor of the W Hotel, where a DJ blasts doof, doof, doof in the hotel foyer, abruptly dissuading any potential guests over the age of 40. Three Blue Ducks is a haven – bustling on a Saturday night, but comparatively serene. It looks really flash, mostly thanks to its elevated spot on the river looking across to South Bank and the giant wall of glass that gives every diner a zillion-dollar view. There is an abundance of space between tables, which I love, but it feels like a hotel dining room, which of course it is. But I’d bet the family pet it’s trying to feel like anything but. Inverted baskets of varying sizes that double as light shades look a little more designed than the Three Blue Ducks touchy-feely propaganda would have you believe. Nevertheless, it’s a good looking restaurant: big, open, comfortable. What makes it special is the service. We have an odd moment when greeted by a guy who is allegedly our waiter for the night. Then he disappears, mid drink order. Perplexing. Soon afterwards Laura

It’s a terrific food offering – simple, hearty, delicious – with all sorts of options for vegans, coeliacs, dairy avoiders. And there’s an emphasis on freshness, local product, and bold, familiar flavours. Similarly, the wine list favours organic, biodynamic and minimal intervention producers – Australian, but reaching into
Spain, France, Italy and New Zealand. We set pots every school holidays and my kids are spoilt for fresh crabs. So they aren’t particularly impressed by the sand crabs here: cooked in fresh water, perhaps, and a little bland. Kingfish ceviche ($24) is way better; solid medallions with fresh paw paw, chilli, ginger and lime. And the mains are spectacular. Glazed roast chicken ($32) with corn puree and jus; a mighty slab of
excellent porchetta, roast apple, mustard and lentils ($36, inset, picture: AAP/Ric Frearson); whole rainbow trout with brown rice, kaffir lime and lemongrass ($49). It’s really good fare – hearty, honest and utterly delicious – but the night is made memorable by Laura and the way she engages the table, woos the kids and – without fuss or pretension – makes us feel like we are dining somewhere special.

RECIPE
Tasty fusion A good grilling ignites Asian flavours in these dishes by author Jennifer Joyce This bulgogi grilled steak taco with chilli mayo and kimchee slaw will make you rethink “fusion” food. Normally I’m a traditionalist, but this is too delicious to pass up. Roy Choi is the genius creator of this, and his Kogi Korean taco trucks in LA spawned a global street food revolution.
KOREAN GRILLED STEAK TACOS WITH KIMCHEE SLAW INGREDIENTS 4 garlic cloves 3cm ginger 2tbs sesame oil 2tbs caster sugar 2tbs light soy sauce 1tbs gochugaru (Korean chilli flakes) 700g ribeye, skirt steak or beef kalbi rib steaks 8 corn tortillas
Vegetable oil, for brushing Black pepper SPICY MAYO 1tbs gochujang (Korean chilli paste) or sriracha 1tbs lime juice 2tbs Kewpie or regular mayonnaise 1/2 quantity Kimchee-style slaw (see below, right), to serve
METHOD To make the spicy mayo, in a small bowl mix all the ingredients together and set aside. To make the marinade, add the garlic, ginger, sesame oil, sugar, soy sauce and chilli flakes to a food processor and blend until smooth. Pour over the beef and marinate for 30 mins or up to overnight, refrigerated and covered. Preheat the oven to 200C (180C fan forced). Wrap the tortillas in a thin tea towel wrapped in foil and warm them in the oven. Alternatively, quickly grill them on a chargrill pan. Heat an outdoor grill or chargrill pan. Wipe the steaks dry and brush each side with oil. Sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper. Grill the steaks for 2 mins each side over direct high heat. Remove and let rest for 5 mins, then slice the steak. Eat the tacos with a little of the spicy mayo, a spoonful of meat and lots of kimchee-style slaw. Serves 4
KIMCHEE ASIAN SLAW 200g white cabbage 3 carrots 1 red onion 1 green chilli 15 red radishes 2tbs chopped coriander 2tbs sesame seeds, toasted
This dish has all the elements you crave in a good salad: crisp, chopped vegies, grilled meat and a punchy dressing. Lotus wafers can be made, bought or replaced with something crunchy like rice crackers.
GRILLED BEEF SALAD WITH SESAME MAPLE DRESSING INGREDIENTS 500g bavette, skirt or sirloin steak 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2tbs light soy sauce 1tbs honey 1tbs grated ginger 3tsp vegetable oil Lotus wafers

SESAME MAPLE DRESSING 60g sesame seeds 60ml light soy sauce 60ml rice vinegar 2tbs maple syrup 2tsp sesame oil

1tbs fish sauce 2tbs gochujang
carrots, slice the red onion into half moons, and thinly slice green chilli and METHOD radishes. Place all the To make the dressing, place vegetables, coriander, all ingredients in a screwtop sesame seeds and peanuts jar with a fitted lid. Shake in a bowl and just before well and set aside. Chop the serving, toss the slaw with cabbage, julienne the the dressing. Serves 4
SALAD 200g cherry tomatoes 10 large red radishes 6 spring onions (scallions) 2 baby cucumbers 3 large heritage carrots 2 avocados 100g watercress, mizuna, baby kale or wild rocket (arugula) METHOD Place the steaks in a Ziploc bag and add the garlic, soy, honey and ginger. Marinate for 2 hours or up to overnight refrigerated. To make the sesame maple dressing, place the sesame seeds in a dry frying pan. Turn the heat to the lowest setting and let them slowly turn golden, about 10 mins. Place in a blender with the remaining dressing ingredients and blend until it’s a fine liquid. Scrape into a bowl and set aside. Heat a chargrill pan or outdoor grill. Brush the steak with the oil and grill on direct heat for 3-4 mins each side for medium rare. Bavette/skirt steak can vary in thickness so
if you have a very fat piece, leave it on the heat a little longer. Once cooked, let the steak rest for 10 mins under foil. Thinly slice and set aside. To make the salad, halve the cherry tomatoes, thinly slice the radishes and spring onions, and cut the baby cucumbers into coins. Slice the carrots into ribbons using a potato peeler and cut the avocados into 4cm cubes. Place all of the salad ingredients into a large bowl and add the beef and lotus wafers. Pour the sesame maple dressing over the salad and toss together. Arrange on a platter to serve. Serves 4

Of course, it also reflects Wayne Gardner’s iconic status in his country of birth – reinforced in the documentary by several references to another beloved, mono-monikered Australian, Kylie, who launched her single I Should Be So Lucky the year he won the Motorcycle Grand Prix (1987). Bringing a tear to the eye, and not 16 BRISBANE NEWS September 5-11, 2018
only to those who know him personally, is archival footage of a sea of fans chanting Gardner’s name after his victory at the inaugural 1989 Phillip Island Grand Prix. Directed by Sims, Wayne is a snapshot of ’80s male culture; a tall-but-true story of a life lived at full tilt by a bloke with a singular vision and the audacity to deliver on it. Backing him all the way is his childhood sweetheart, Donna-Lee Kahlbetzer, who gives the impression of being just as fearless, in her own way. She’s a strong and vital character, from whom it would be nice to hear more – but that’s another film. Sims also explores Gardner’s complex relationship with his father – they both acknowledge the latter’s difficulty in expressing his emotions, trackside – and the title character’s early, enthusiastic adoption
A stint living in Arnhem Land gave Brisbane artist and gallery director Michael Eather his main artistic motif. As well as running Brisbane’s FireWorks Gallery, one of Australia’s leading indigenous art galleries, Michael is a talented artist in his own right and has become known for a recurring image – the stingray. There are a few of his stingrays, such as Crimson Messenger (inset), at his new gallery in Bowen Hills. He has just reopened there in a stunning warehousestyle space that allows the gallery to show more large-scale work than ever before. Welcome to Thompson St (the address of the new gallery), the main exhibition, features work by Laurie Nilsen, Rosella Namok, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa and Tommy Watson. Laurie has been with the gallery since it opened in 1993 in Fortitude Valley. His signature emus, paintings and wire sculptures have been a consistent presence, and there are some colourful emu head paintings in this show, as well as some impressive larger paintings in monochrome. I love Rosella’s rain paintings, which tell stories of her life in Queensland’s far north. Stinging Rain … Iron Range is indicative. The bigger works can be best viewed from the upper floor. On the ground floor there is also a range of works by other artists and there’s a new addition – a small room for works on
paper, which is called, funnily enough, the Works on Paper Room. Makes sense, right? Around the ground floor a range of the gallery’s artists is featured – a kind of greatest hits show, and that includes a few of Michael’s sleek, shiny stingrays. He has painted stingrays, but it’s his sleek fibreglass, glass and steel sculptures, with shiny automotive paint surfaces, which have really captured the imagination of the arts world and collectors. For Michael, they are motifs of time spent living in Arnhem Land when fishing and hunting were part of daily life. He muses on this as we stand on the veranda upstairs, looking down at mangrove-fringed Breakfast Creek. Being by the creek brings back memories of Arnhem Land and who knows, a stingray may be lurking in the muddy water. The stingray may be a symbol for him of a simpler way of life, but he’s a city slicker now and the automotive paint is a nice urban touch. Elsewhere you’ll find work by indigenous and non-indigenous artists including Anthony Lister and David Paulson. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really, so take some time and enjoy. Welcome to Thompson St, until Sep 15, FireWorks Gallery, 9/31 Thompson St, Bowen Hills. fireworksgallery.com.au
of sports psychology. But it treads more carefully around the subject of male-female relations, in the vein of what happens on the circuit, stays on the circuit – apart from general allusions to groupies and a scene in which Gardner judges a bikini-clad beauty contest in Brazil. Fleshing out the early years with animated sequences, Sims interweaves archival footage with interviews from family and childhood mates through to mechanics and fellow competitors. Wayne charts Gardner’s extraordinary journey from the working class steelworks town of Wollongong to a world title, Monaco, and finally Port Phillip. And that feels like a very natural place for a great Aussie hero story to call it quits. VICKY ROACH V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

TRAVEL
Welcome to paradise Enjoy lazy days poolside or take a scenic tour to see why Fiji’s locals are full of life, laughter and song Leesa Maher It sounds like a weird kind of insect but it turns out a velocipede is a rather fun mode of transport for the fitness challenged. I am perched on said velocipede – essentially a modified rail-mounted pushbike – and rattling along railway tracks abandoned by Fiji’s lapsed sugar cane industry. These Ecotrax velocipedes, mounted in pairs, are electric-assisted, which makes it easy to glide merrily through fields, ancient rainforest and cuttings that open to deserted beaches edged by azure waters. This is a rarely seen slice of Fiji’s famous Coral Coast, an 80km stretch along the southwest coast of Viti Levu, where palmfringed beaches and the surrounding reef offer Insta-worthy images at every turn. Ecotrax launched in January this year, the brainchild of New Zealand couple Howie and Mandy de Vries, and even featured on a “fantasy date” on Channel 10’s Bachelor in Paradise. Bookings have been brisk as a result. The station where tours depart and conclude is in a 100-year-old locomotive shed in Cuvu, a town about an hour’s drive from the bustling hub of Nadi and 30 minutes from our accommodation at the five-star Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort. It’s a relaxing three-hour round trip, this Ecotrax tour, with lots of stops along the way to give butts a bit of a rest and to allow our hilarious guide, Britney, to point out places of interest. The tour is geared to all fitness levels – mums, dads, the disabled, the super-fits and the unfits. Little ones, too small to pedal, can sit on the timber base while the parents pedal. The odd horse, cow or goat hampers our progress, but add to the feeling that we are truly off the beaten track – that we are privy to the real Fiji. We slow down through villages dotted along the way to our destination – the private Vunabua Beach for a swim and refreshments – and bellow a hearty “Bula!” to the tiny tots who race towards the tracks. With faces wreathed in smiles, they raise their hands for a “high five” from the tourists who are now a familiar sight.
STAR TREATMENT Back at my bure at Outrigger Fiji, I have timed it just right. My “talai” butler Merri greets me with a cheery “Bula!”, a glass of champagne and canapes. Today it’s sushi; 24 BRISBANE NEWS September 5-11, 2018
yesterday was chicken tikka on semolina cakes. I could get used to this. Talai butlers are assigned to deluxe ocean-view rooms, suites or bures and, as well as serving an evening cocktail, they unpack and iron clothing, recommend tours or activities, and make restaurant reservations. How I wish I could bring Merri home with me. The Outrigger’s 207 rooms and suites and 37 thatch-roofed bures are set amidst 16ha of manicured gardens, which stretch along the shores of a reef-fringed lagoon. Resort facilities include five restaurants
Lazing by the pool wins out. The water is warm, the sun is shining and there are coconuts with straws and bars, a tropical swimming lagoon, kids’ clubs, fitness centre, tennis courts, private beach and, at its highest point, the Bebe Spa Sanctuary. A trip to the spa via golf buggy is an event in itself as the vehicle, driven by a host, winds ever higher to reach the elegant timber structure with its 180degree views of the resort and ocean. My Myoxy caviar facial, using Pevonia Botanica products, is an hour of heaven that magically lifts and hydrates skin. My therapist follows up with a warm seashell massage, relieving tired muscles. I fall asleep, but wake to feel like a new person. What could be better?
COCKTAIL HOUR Sunset drinks at the resort’s Sundowner Bar & Grill, on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, are not to be missed. The sky is a postcard-perfect pink and the mojitos are textbook. Local seafood stars on the menu alongside woodfired pizzas and flamegrilled Aussie beef, but if it’s authentic South Pacific you want, reserve a table at the adults-only Ivi Restaurant. Housed in a traditional Fijian bure, Ivi was awarded Best Visitor Dining Experience at the 2017 Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards and offers fresh local and international fare, such as ika kokoda – Fiji’s beloved national dish of limemarinated island fish with coconut milk and a hint of chilli. dish at the table for added pizzazz and serves it in a half-coconut shell. It’s delicious, just like the tati pati clay pot prawn curry with hand-rolled roti and mustard rice I order for mains. Halfway through dinner the waiters gather to serenade a couple with the traditional Anniversary Song, their voices blending in perfect harmony. Music comes naturally to the Fijians and they often burst into song. I find myself hoping it will be someone’s anniversary every night of
my stay, just to hear their dulcet tones. But back to the food. For guests wanting to recreate Fijian flavours at home, the resort offers kokoda-making classes or, for the more enterprising cook, a lesson with its award-winning chefs. I was lucky enough to spend a few hours with executive chef Shailesh Naidu – first on a guided tour of the Sigatoka Produce Markets, the biggest day market in Fiji selling fruits and vegetables grown in the Sigatoka Valley, and then at a V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
cooking demonstration in the Ivi kitchens. Chef Shailesh shared recipes for his Indo-Fijian chicken curry; prawns baked in infused coconut milk; and the delicious poor man’s rice – all the while making it look so easy. If cocktails are more your thing, enrol in the resort’s Fiji Coconut Vodka Cocktail Academy, where mixologists coach guests through a tasting and the creation of signature cocktails using locally made Fiji Coconut Vodka. VILLAGE LIFE Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear are all free for resort guests, plus daily aqua aerobics classes. But lazing by the pool wins out. The water is warm, the sun is shining and there are coconuts with straws. One staff member is the “denutter”, and it’s his job to harvest coconuts to prevent them falling on the unsuspecting. The upside is they sell about 40 fresh coconuts poolside daily and scoop out the flesh for you once you’ve drunk the juice.
A 10-minute stroll from the Outrigger is the Kula Wild Adventure Park, with huge walk-through enclosures housing birds and reptiles. Kids can hit the Splash Mountain Jungle water slide, hold a Fijian iguana and help handfeed baby turtles. Also well worth doing is the Sigatoka River Safari, a half-day jet boat tour that includes a Fijian village visit. The safari visits 14 villages on rotation, and it’s a good idea to bring school supplies or sporting items as gifts for the children.
The 120km-long river supports 52 villages whose residents depend on it for washing, fishing and irrigating crops. You will take part in a kava ceremony, Fijian dancing and a lunch prepared by the women of the village – and you will fall in love with these people who are so full of life, laughter and song. AT HOME
Inner sanctum Men of steel unite to create a family home that plays with light and shade to maximise privacy Michelle Bailey This Tarragindi home is a lesson on how to build a family home on a small lot without sacrificing space, sunlight or garden. It was designed by Brisbane architect Chris Bligh for structural engineer Stephen Paterdis, who constructed it with the help of his father Phillip Paterdis and the family’s steel fabrication business, Paterdis Steel. The generous and joyful interiors appear to defy the modest dimensions of the 400sq m site, while bespoke steel components add jewel-like accents to the exterior. “A big driver for the project was how to treat it like a prototype for a small lot house,” Chris says. “Because Stephen had the capacity to build a lot of it in steel through their fabrication business, it was also an opportunity to explore steel as a material, softened with timber and brick and concrete.” Steel establishes the building’s structural frame and is used extensively elsewhere. It was used to create the yellow perforated light scoops and folded black privacy screens that characterise the exterior. Each skilfully designed and fabricated screen manages sunlight, ventilation and privacy while creating something visually striking. “Our neighbours have told us how much they enjoy seeing the windows glow golden at night through the yellow screens,” Stephen says. The home’s interior also shows inventiveness with materials and spatial character. “The long, narrow form (of the house) is punctuated by three principle doubleheight spaces: (the) library, courtyard and living room,” Chris says. These tall spaces mean those rooms feel large, despite modest dimensions. Balustrades to upper floors strengthen visual connections between upstairs and downstairs. Carefully considered window apertures ensure garden views are generously framed.
Look closely in the timber-lined kitchen and you will see door handles made of brass and steel. After extensive experimentation and testing by Stephen, these small details were fabricated by Paterdis Steel to be used here for the first time. A multitude of steel components made specially for the dining and living rooms include a bespoke steel bookcase and steel wall recesses. Within a two-storey brick fireplace wall are folded steel boxes that create striking casings to the television, storage and fireplace. “The (interior) steel staircase was another special element,” Chris says.
Our neighbours have told us how much they enjoy seeing the windows glow golden at night through the yellow screens “The whole piece was achieved with a single weld, which was quite a feat.” At the centre of the home, a brickfloored courtyard creates a delightful outdoor room. Downstairs rooms and a hallway open to the courtyard. The sheltered terrace provides the space to draw fresh air through the interior and offers an outlook to rooms wrapping around its three sides. High-level perforated steel screens ensure this inner sanctuary remains private and the visual language explored on the street facade is reinforced. Playful pops of yellow reinforce the idea that this house is designed to balance fun and functionality. LAST WORD
Phil Brown I got to meet Split Enz, Australian Crawl and other acts who often seemed a bit surprised to find themselves in Rockhampton. I knew how they felt I was asked to talk about how I came to be an arts writer recently. And I had to admit it was kind of by accident. I’ve been covering the arts my whole career, and for these past years have been the arts editor of The Courier-Mail and a columnist for this esteemed publication. I started out writing about the arts when I was a callow young journalist working at The Morning Bulletin in Rockhampton. My two years there in 1980 and 1981 coincided with the early days of the Pilbeam Theatre, so there was a surprising amount to write about, actually. Doing the arts round, I got to meet some amazing people, as well as covering local government, the mines and all manner of other goings on. When the Sydney Dance Company came to town, I met the great Graeme Murphy, and I got to rub shoulders with legendary actors Googie Withers and John McCallum when they toured with a show. That Australian icon
Leonard Teale, who I remembered from Homicide, also came to town, and I got to meet and interview him. Being a fan of The Goon Show, I was thrilled to also meet Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe, who were also touring at the time, separately. That was an almost religious experience. Milligan was hilarious and started his show sitting on stage reading the newspaper. I used to review the shows, too, and in those days they would hold a space in the newspaper, so afterwards I would run from the theatre to the office (only a few hundred metres), write my review, file it, then run back to the bar for the after-show drinks. I used to cover music, too, and I got to meet Split Enz, Australian Crawl and other acts, who often seemed a bit surprised to find themselves in Rockhampton. I knew how they felt. I covered the literary scene and interviewed authors on tour including the legendary historian Manning Clark
who, distractingly, proceeded to peel and eat a mandarin during our chat. One of my favourite experiences was meeting British comedy legends Jimmy Edwards and Eric Sykes. I was sent to the airport to meet them on a slow weekday and it was like a morgue there. I swear I saw a few tumbleweeds go by outside. The photographer and I were allowed on to the tarmac to greet the duo. Edwards, famously loud and sporting his signature bushy moustache, emerged from the plane first and looked a bit dazzled by the bright sunlight. When he spotted the two of us gingerly approaching – me with my tatty notebook and the photographer with his camera bag – he held his arms up in front of his face and cried out: “Arrghh, mobbed by the media again!” We went to what was laughingly known as the VIP lounge for an interview that was the journalistic equivalent of herding cats. What a hoot.
