A success story born in Brisbane, Easton Pearson was famous the world over for its daring patterns, innovative materials and meticulous techniques – all of which conspired to propel the label (1989-2016) to cult status. Pamela and Lydia went on to pursue solo interests (P8-11) but remain great friends – their bond evident in our cover shot by photographer Renae Droop. Now the talented duo are being honoured with a major exhibition of their work – a showcase of 200 outfits from the Museum of Brisbane’s Easton Pearson archives. It’s a fashion event, not to be missed.

Voice for change Former Paralympian Karni Liddell is still pushing boundaries – as a social advocate and motivational speaker

hether gracing television screens, speaking to politicians and business leaders, or taking a bow on a medal podium, Karni Liddell has long been the public face of an often overlooked minority. The vivacious 39-year-old, a feted Paralympian, disability activist and motivational speaker, will speak at the Queensland Government’s 2018 White Ribbon Day Breakfast this month. Karni first burst onto the public stage as one of Australia’s most successful Paralympic swimmers, breaking records and winning medals at both the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games, having been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy as a baby.

She studied journalism and dabbled in television presenting and commentary before qualifying as a social worker more than a decade ago. “The reason I got into media was to raise the profile of people with disabilities and show us as a visible part of the community. But I couldn’t get a job back in the day because I was in a wheelchair and disabled. “It was a very vain, pretentious world back then, so I can’t believe at almost 40, I’m back on TV,” Karni says of her recent appearances on Channel 7’s Great Day Out. Now she applies her media skills to highlight her work as an ambassador for the National Disability Insurance Scheme and as a member of the Domestic and Family Violence Implementation Council. She was invited to join the council in

2015 by former Governor-General Quentin Bryce, whose landmark Not Now, Not Ever report into the scourge of family violence was the impetus for its establishment. “She saw something in my work that even I didn’t recognise,” Karni says. “The majority of my career has been spent working with and supporting people with disabilities, and she gave me this great opportunity to look at a different side of our community. It’s quite an ugly side (because) people – especially women – with disabilities are so vulnerable to domestic and family violence.” The single mum is also passionate about supporting DVConnect and will speak at the White Ribbon Day fundraising breakfast on November 20. “If you only realised how much work

goes into trying to keep women safe,” she says. “Charities like DVConnect are constantly working long hours and long days in a very difficult field. Domestic and family violence doesn’t just happen from nine to five.” Away from the cameras, council meetings and ministerial briefings, Karni is kept blissfully busy by the demands of her 22-month-old son, Kai. “He was an absolute miracle! I’m 40 in March so I never thought being a mum was something I’d be able to do. Forever in fashion Adored and adorned, Easton Pearson’s vibrant fashions live on for all to see, writes Tonya Turner

t’s whisper quiet in Museum of Brisbane’s store rooms in a small industrial park south of the city. The space is freezing and there are lino floors, fluorescent lights and steel shelves holding thousands of precious garments and items meticulously labelled in plastic bags. The clinical setting is a far cry from Brisbane fashion house Easton Pearson’s busy and colourful workshop, where sewing machines hummed, staff chatted and design team Pam Easton and Lydia Pearson worked their magic before closing up shop in 2016 after 28 years in the business. Two years on, Pamela and Lydia couldn’t be happier with where their archive of 3300 garments and 5000-plus items, including sketches, look books, photographs and accessories, has ended up. Although museum conservation guidelines mean the clothes will never be worn again, the pay-off is that future generations will be able to access, discover and study the collection for decades to come. “As long as they can go on mannequins and be displayed; as long as they’re in the public arena and they can be seen as they should be worn, then that’s fine,” Lydia says. The archive, valued at $2.7 million, was purchased and donated to the museum by Brisbane philanthropist Dr Paul Eliadis on the condition that it be kept together in its entirety and be used as an educational resource. It is the biggest gift received by MoB, the largest textile donation to an Australian museum, and a monumental task for the museum to archive each and every item. MoB director Renai Grace says more

than anywhere, Brisbane is where the archive belongs. “Pam Easton and Lydia Pearson are pivotal historic and cultural figures in the life of our city,” she says. Known for its bright colours, intricate embellishments and often quirky approach, Easton Pearson was born from the post-Expo 88 creative boom. As one of Australia’s most successful labels, it was stocked in 140 stores in 24 countries, and was a regular at Paris Fashion Week. In 2009 GOMA held a retrospective of the designers’ work, and in 2017 they were inducted into the Design Institute of Australia’s Hall of Fame, joining the likes of Collette Dinnigan and Aurelio Costarella.

Pam and Lydia really captured a Queensland aesthetic and took it to the world, and the world went ‘wow’ The Designers’ Guide: Easton Pearson Archive exhibition at MoB offers a behindthe-scenes look into the former fashion house and is the first of many exhibitions to be drawn from the archive. It will feature 200 garments and focus on the inspiration behind the clothes, such as a christening dress found at a Paris flea market, and an Indian groom’s wedding jacket. It will also explore the social context in which they were created and the

Although they don’t work together anymore, Lydia and Pamela are like family to one another. While Lydia is now a fashion lecturer at QUT, Pamela continues to design under her own self-titled slow-fashion label, Pamela Easton. “I really miss our conversations about design, and it is incredibly different working alone,” Pamela says. She is back to releasing two collections a year and continues to work with the artisans behind Easton Pearson. “I spend a lot of time in India in discussion with people, and of course my volume is nothing like Easton Pearson. The intention was, and is, to try and maintain employment for some of those people. It’s only sold online and it’s something I can very much control. “It gives me more time for family and friends, and myself,” Pamela says. In announcing their closure in 2016, the designers said it was time to re-evaluate and put some balance back into their lives. Happily, that’s something they both feel they’ve achieved. Lydia has found a new calling in teaching and has plans to establish a workspace for young designers. “I feel that now, teaching the students in such a hands-on way, I almost have the best of both worlds because I have the joy of all the creation but I don’t have the agony of all the day-to-day business,” Lydia says. “I would like to try to establish Brisbane as not only a place that people are happy to stay and work (in) but as a place people want to come to to set up their art practice.” And when she isn’t guiding the next generation of designers into the future, Lydia can likely be found enjoying time with her oneyear-old grandson. “I have more time to explore and do other things I want to do now. I feel very full of possibility. It’s a very exciting stage,” she says.

FROM PAGE 8 detail and workmanship of the garments using techniques that may disappear in decades to come. “What we wear is so close to who we are,” Renai says. “Pam and Lydia really captured a Queensland aesthetic and took it to the world, and the world went ‘wow’. “This exhibition is all about how we inspire future generations ... by the techniques and success of this brand and where they took themselves – from a backroom warehouse onto the world stage.

We always hear stories of people who have passed it down to their daughters “It’s about dreaming big and feeling inspired. You don’t have to go elsewhere; you can be here, especially in this global age, where you can live where you love.” The exhibition also examines how technology and fast fashion manufacturing processes have disrupted the industry. In Easton Pearson’s case, it caused them to increase from two collections a

year to six, and in doing so, lose some of what made the label so successful. Despite this, they remained committed to highquality, ethically produced fashion, working closely with artisans in India, Vietnam and locally. “That was always the philosophy at Easton Pearson, that our manufacturing was ethical,” Pamela says. “We always made sure the people we worked with were remunerated properly, that they were in decent working conditions, and that they were well looked after. “That was just part of what we did, without really announcing it. It’s a terrific thing. It’s now very much something that’s discussed and promoted and is very important.” While Renai admits “it’s torturous” that they can’t try on the clothes in the archive, Pamela and Lydia take comfort in the knowledge their designs live on in wardrobes around the world. “There’s a great deal of Easton Pearson out there,” Pamela says. “We always hear stories of people who have passed it down to their daughters – and sometimes even their granddaughters – who enjoy wearing it, so that’s pretty wonderful.” The Designers’ Guide: Easton Pearson Archive, Nov 23-Apr 22, Museum of Brisbane, city. People’s choice Modern Thai serves up local favourites with a smile RESTAURANT Tony Harper Mount Gravatt’s Modern Thai Restaurant won the 2018 award for best Thai restaurant at the Queensland Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence. And it came in second (behind Perth’s Dusit Dheva) in the national competition, which is quite an achievement if you follow the logic of the scoring system, which I’m not sure I do. There is some great Thai food to be found in Brisbane and beyond, and I wonder how the likes of Spirit House (Yandina) and Thai Wi-Rat (Fortitude Valley) missed out. Are they not members? Did they not nominate themselves? There are machinations here beyond my ken. But the politics of awards aren’t the point – congratulations Modern Thai! It is a popular restaurant that has been plying its trade for nearly two decades. Part of the allure are its layout and looks – glass front, covered courtyard, walk-in wine cellar, and a rather comfy interior that is showing the patina of its 19 years. It’s quirky rather than lush, and some aspects of the quirk seem to detract a little from the atmosphere. For example, a dimly lit bar in one corner – more a service centre for staff than somewhere patrons would sit and sip – has gathered clutter. And from that bar you can select from a helter-skelter selection of wines. Some are excellent, such as the Teusner Sauvignon Blanc, the Oliver Taranga Corrina Cabernet Shiraz, and Houghton’s Jack Mann Cabernet

Sauvignon (2002), while others – the Patrick Pinot Noir, and Leasingham Bin 56 Cabernet Malbec – are mundane. It’s weighted towards full-bodied reds when Thai is white wine and bright, juicy red territory. The service, however, is a strong point: welcoming and efficient, everything happens with a smile. Aside from papadams and naan bread, Modern Thai’s menu doesn’t stray too far from the usual Thai offerings of curries, stir fries, curry puffs, salads and soups. Specials include crispy barramundi salad ($26, inset). And it steers clear of the extreme – jungle curry, offal, fiery larbs, fermented sausage, or the wealth of dishes you’d find in the streets and homes of Thailand but rarely in Australia. That’s par for the course. I might crave it – you might also – but two of us don’t constitute a viable audience.

The curry puffs ($7.90 for four) are delicious – nice shortcrust pastry and ground beef with a decent mix of spice. Massaman curry ($19.90), ordered gluten-free, is passable, but hardly epic (the Massaman lamb shank at Rick Shores is in a different stratosphere), and choo chee coral trout ($22.90) is solid. The best dish is ordered by my greenshating, sugar- and meat-eating daughter: stir-fried seasonal vegetables in peanut sauce ($19.90). Go figure. And it is really good: batons of fresh, perfectly cooked vegetables of all colours with a good coating of sauce. So it’s good food, but in the swelling sea of modern Asian in Queensland, it’s hardly electric. As a local for residents of Mount Gravatt, however, it’s dandy.

Full of zest This tangy citrus treat could lead to daily cravings, says Alastair McLeod Claudia Roden’s celebrated orange-cake recipe was first published more than 50 years ago. It has since been plundered, plagiarised and praised across the culinary firmament. Its bittersweet intensity is utterly delicious and as compelling today as ever. Ms Roden’s cake comes from a Middle-Eastern kitchen, whereas the yoghurt cake originates in French country cuisine: light, lactic and friable. The addition of syrup after baking lends a citrus lift that contrasts with the jamminess of its famous cousin. I have had equal success with lemon, mandarin and grapefruit. I reckon I could eat any of them every day for the next 50 years.

YOGHURT AND ORANGE SYRUP CAKE INGREDIENTS 125g unsalted butter, softened 250g caster sugar 2 eggs 300g Greek yoghurt 1tsp vanilla paste Zest of 2 oranges, plus 60ml juice 400g self-raising flour

½tsp bicarbonate of soda, sieved 1 orange, segmented

SYRUP 220g caster sugar 250ml water 80ml orange juice 2 oranges, thinly sliced

ICING Juice and zest of 1 orange 1½tbs icing sugar

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C. Grease and line a 23cm spring form tin. Cream butter and sugar in stand mixer until pale and fluffy. Add eggs one by one, followed by yoghurt, vanilla, zest and juice. Sieve together flour and bicarbonate of soda and fold into mix. Tip into tin and smooth to level. Bake for 45 mins until a skewer comes out clean. To make the syrup, combine all ingredients and simmer in a small pot for 12 mins. Allow cake to cool slightly then prick all over with a skewer and pour over syrup, reserving oranges. To make the icing, combine orange juice and zest with icing sugar until smooth. Drizzle over cool cake and place reserved citrus segments on top. most expensive musical instrument in the world. “We are hoping to take the audience through a portal to the time of Beethoven, and try to access some of the sounds available to Beethoven,’’ he says. “I really like the sound of the gut, it has more soul and texture.’’ Richard remains as passionately committed to the ACO as he was when he first joined as artistic director in 1989. “You are wanting to give audiences those experiences you wouldn’t normally get at home,’’ he says. “We’ve just come back from London, where we are the resident orchestra of the Barbican Centre, and next week we are playing in Brisbane. “We love it in Brisbane; I personally have a long and enduring relationship with Brisbane. I remember at the beginning of the 1990s we would be playing for a couple of hundred people in Brisbane’s Concert Hall.’’ Richard knew from his first violin lesson that he wanted a music career. By 11 he had made good on his goal by performing in a chamber orchestra. “A chamber orchestra seemed more fun, and I like the intimacy rather than a big orchestra experience. You can be much more experimental and collegial,’’ he says. Last year the orchestra collaborated on the movie Mountain, and a highlight next year will be restaging the musical and visual piece Luminous, featuring photographer Bill Henson’s work and indie Israeli-Australian singersongwriter Lior. ichard Tognetti always dreamt of hearing Beethoven’s fifth symphony in concert, but ironically, he had to play the masterpiece himself to fulfil his long-held aspiration. The Australian Chamber Orchestra artistic director says the work may be one of the world’s top five symphonies, but it is rarely heard in Australia. Richard had to wait until his 20s to achieve his wish. Now he is looking forward to revisiting the work at Brisbane’s QPAC next week. “I realised when I first performed it, I had never heard it live before,’’ he says. “Even though everyone knows the first four notes so well, you can never know a masterpiece of music completely. “With such great works of art, they need continual appraisal and reappraisal. The work has such extraordinary drama.’’ Richard, 53, says Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, written between 1804 and 1808, is the ideal “big treat to end the year’’, especially with the chamber orchestra increasing its number to 40. We have Brisbane artist Peter Anderson going for us and bringing back the most wonderful and inspiring imagery of those far-flung regions. There really couldn’t be a more adventurous artist on the planet. Peter looks like a polar explorer or mountaineer, and he’s a veteran of a decade of journeys to the planet’s extremities. His voyages result in exhibitions that simply take your breath away. Peter works for his passage on exclusive expeditions as an artist in residence and Zodiac driver, who helps ferry passengers ashore in these remote places. featured in his current exhibition at Philip Bacon Galleries. I’m amazed to see a work called Mammoth Tusk, Tundra River, and even Peter still can’t believe his luck coming across a relic like that in plain sight. “I see something like that and I am just awestruck that there’s a bit of an elephant 4500 years old just sitting there,” Peter says. His paintings of polar bears are stunning, although his work is tinged with a warning. As a regular visitor to the Arctic and Antarctic regions, he has observed a reduction in the amount of ice and snow, with the effects of climate change being quite obvious to him. The beautiful It never used to rain on Wrangel is one of his most romantic works. It features polar bears foraging by the shore, with gulls wheeling overhead, as a thin mist of rain falls over the landscape beyond. But as Peter points out, that rain should be snow, and

the polar bears should be foraging on the ice rather than the exposed shore. “These artworks show a different Arctic from that seen by the indigenous peoples and early explorers,” Peter writes in the catalogue. “Climate change has altered everything in this, our tipping-point era.” Peter’s works are breathtakingly beautiful, and you almost wish you could go with him on his adventures, but it takes a hardy individual to venture into these parts. Luckily, he has the right stuff and will soon make a southern summer voyage to Antarctica on another artistic adventure, and next year he plans to go to the North Pole. As you do. What a guy. Nothing made Callum Turner feel more like a fully fledged member of J. K. Rowling’s magical world than taking on Johnny Depp in a wand battle. Johnny portrays Gellert Grindelwald, the evil title character in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, while Callum plays Theseus Scamander, the older brother of Newt (Eddie Redmayne) and head auror of the British Ministry of Magic, who is on a mission to stop the infamous wizard. Callum says it takes skill to seemingly wield power with a wand. “You are throwing a lot of energy into it, and you don’t know if you are looking stupid or whether you are nailing it,’’ he says. “Johnny Depp is there … but nothing else because it’s all CGIed, so you do your best.” The latest Fantastic Beasts film opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped capture Grindelwald.

One muscle twitch across that craggy, 82-year-old face is worth a dozen pages of dialogue. And then there’s the actor’s body of work. Fleshing out David Lowery’s screenplay about a gentleman bank robber are our own memories of his previous roles – Butch Cassidy’s Sundance Kid and The Sting’s Johnny Hooker. Adding another layer to this true-life crime caper is Redford’s announcement that it’s his final film. All of which makes The Old Man and the Gun more engaging than it ought to be. The good fight Battling dark forces is all in a day’s work for actor Callum Turner When Grindelwald makes a dramatic escape from prison, his former friend and now rival, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), enlists Newt to capture the dark wizard, joining Theseus on the same quest. “The world is at a tipping point,” Callum says. “One man is seducing a lot of people and is gaining a lot of followers, and Theseus is trying to save the world.’’ Callum, who dates British actor Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), says a brotherly kiss within five minutes of meeting Eddie, during the final audition, may have sealed his

selection for the role. “Eddie was really warm and open. I could tell he really liked me and really wanted me to get the role. We were doing the scene and things were just popping off and I gave him (Eddie) a big kiss on the forehead, and maybe that cemented the job for me,’’ he laughs. “It was a brotherly thing to do.’’ It is no wonder Callum felt an instant bond with Eddie, given that the pair are from the same London suburb – the “less shiny’’ area of Chelsea. “We learnt to swim in the same place, we knew the same parks, and the

same idiosyncrasies from that part of the world,’’ says Callum, who is eight years younger than Eddie, even though he plays the older brother in the film. Callum played semi-professional football for two years as a 16-year-old before focusing on acting, and he previously portrayed Anatole Kuragin in the BBC production of War and Peace (2016). The actor, who has travelled to Australia to visit his half-brother and half-sister, who live in Sydney, has long been a Potter fan. “I read the book when I was nine years old. I wasn’t into reading much but I blitzed it.” He says the most exciting days of filming were at the original Hogwarts School – Lacock Abbey – near Bath in England. “The sets were incredible,’’ he says. the film is based on a 2003 story in The New Yorker about 70-something career criminal Forrest Tucker, who pulled off a string of audacious bank heists across the US. Redford gives the outlaw an unassuming charm that explains how he flew under the radar for so long. Tucker is so polite and affable to the bank tellers he’s fleecing, they don’t seem to register that he’s just held them up at gunpoint. The incorrigible thief even earns the begrudging respect of Casey Affleck’s working-class detective. Sissy Spacek is a natural in the role of Tucker’s romantic interest and the driver of his pick-up truck. All these relationships have an easygoing feel, and that’s the film’s strength, but The Old Man and the Gun is so seduced by its central character’s charm (tied up with that of the actor who plays him) that it fails to ask any of the hard questions. A reason to smile A local entrepreneur finally finds relief from endometriosis Emma Schafer When Sam Cook-Bateman greets customers with a cheery hello at her new homewares store, she appears like any other proud business owner. But Sam’s smile comes from more than the thrill of opening 2 Mad Sisters, her store at Sandgate. For the first time in her adult life, the 42-year-old is almost pain free. An endometriosis diagnosis about 20 years ago meant Sam grappled daily with overwhelming pain until recent surgery to fit a neuromodulation unit. The device is used to manage the chronic pain caused when tissue that normally lines the uterus grows elsewhere in the abdomen. “I would say my pain has improved 90 per cent,” Sam says. “It’s incredible to think about how much pain I could have saved myself if I had known about this surgery earlier. I’ve had 10 laparoscopies over 20 years. I’ve had three surgeries to repair a bowel perforation, one ovary removed, about 10cm of my large intestine is missing, and I’ve had seven miscarriages and no children,” she says. “I’ve been pretty close to death.”

Sam and her husband, Geraint Bateman, donate a portion of the profits from 2 Mad Sisters to QENDO (Endometriosis Association Qld). “I love shopping and I love people,” Sam says. “When we found this shop, everything just fell into sync.” Sam and Geraint met online about five years ago, built a house together in Canberra, then moved to Brisbane to take 2 Mad Sisters from its original online business to a bricks and mortar operation. “I was one of those kids who used to play shop, so it made sense to have one of my own,” Sam says. “People like to see and touch, and having the storefront allows that. When you lie in hospital for days and weeks … it makes it easier to just get on and do the things you want.” Geraint runs the shop Monday to Friday and Sam is there on Saturdays, after working as a project manager for UnitingCare Queensland and Lifeline on weekdays. Now the store is open, Sam aims to boost awareness of endometriosis and get women talking. This month she launched an #itdontdefine campaign. “The campaign is about helping women understand that what they are experiencing does not need to define who they are, and that they can recover and live a full and happy life with the disease,” she says. Sam asks women to share their health-related stories on the #itdontdefine Facebook page to encourage other women to take up the fight and live life to the full. “Don’t feel ashamed; don’t feel it’s women’s business and you shouldn’t tell people,” she says. “Be proud. You are part of a group of women who wake up every day with a disease that has no cure, and you get up and carry on. You should be proud to be part of such an amazing group of women. Bold colours (cue the cobalt kitchen cabinets) blend with natural textures for a relaxed feel. On-trend rattan furniture and macrame cushions emphasise the laidback air, while even the art shirks the rigidity of frames. In the various spaces, botanic prints on organic canvas fabric dictate the colour palette. “We wanted to encapsulate our brands; be bohemian inspired, eclectic and fun, with a cohesive natural palette,” says Anna Sinclair from Lost Lover. Felicia Gibson from Home Dweller says the greatest reward from the project was making valuable connections in the industry. “When you are running a business on your own, it is a lot of work and you can feel very overwhelmed at times, so to talk to the other women about their challenges and successes was really reassuring and enormously helpful,” she says. Petria Leggo-Field from Coco Rose Interiors agrees. “I walked away feeling incredibly inspired, with a conviction and sense of self-belief stronger than I’d ever had before. Invest in some cord tidies to deal with trailing cords. All styling needs some “white space” so beautiful objects have room to breathe. White walls and bare floorboards are a good starting point. While a stark, true white looks stunning in a photo shoot, a softer white works better in the home. Try Resene Alabaster or Snow Drift from Porter’s Paints. Nature-inspired palettes and patterns are ideal for summer. Think soft blues and fresh florals. Swap out heavy velvets and chunky knits for lightweight cottons and linens. A floaty, sheer curtain is always a winner.

Home reno boom continues It has been another solid year for home renovations, with half of homeowners on Houzz Australia planning to renovate their home. According to the annual Houzz and Home Australia survey of more than 7200 national respondents, first-time and repeat homebuyers are more likely to take on kitchen renovations first. Kitchens are also the most expensive room to renovate, with a median spend of $20,000 for a large kitchen, followed by large main bathrooms, at a median spend of $13,000. Houzz principal economist Nino Sitchinava says all of the evidence from their research points to it being another robust year for the home improvement industry. “Recent buyers and long-term homeowners alike are keen on investing in major projects like kitchens and bathrooms, and they’re validated by the value these projects have brought to their homes,” she says. Improving a home’s design or

functionality was the top consideration during renovations this year, while increasing the home’s resale value was also important to homeowners. Half of homeowners surveyed believe

their home value has increased by at least the full amount of the project cost postrenovation. Other findings from the survey show people are opting for deliberate planning

Phil Brown The cinema and theatre environment is really entrapment. It’s dark, you’re comfortable, no one is watching, and ... I’m out like a light I read an article recently about how good sleep is for you. Just as well really, because I’ve been doing a lot of it lately. In fact as I write this, I can hardly keep my eyes open. This is a bit of a change for me. When I was a bachelor boy, I was a terrible insomniac and you would often find me watching telly in the wee small hours, or tapping out poems on my old Remington, a cigarette burning between my lips. I used to get to sleep around 2am or 3am. This meant I would sleep late; sometimes very late. As a young cadet journo in Rocky, I recall being in bed fast asleep one morning when the phone rang. It was about 10am. It was the chief of staff calling to ask if I could make the supreme effort of coming into the office because there was work to be done. I explained that I hadn’t got to sleep until 3am, but he seemed unimpressed. Those years of insomnia were quite

frustrating, but I have a lot of poems to show for the experience. Slowly though, as I have settled into becoming a suburban dad with a regular life and a steady job, I have begun to sleep more and more. This is a good thing because apparently we all need to get more sleep, for our health. So I really shouldn’t feel too bad when I nod off at the cinema or theatre. When I attended the opening night of David Williamson’s fabulous new play, Nearer the Gods, at Queensland Theatre’s spanking new Bille Brown Theatre, the first thing I noticed was how comfortable the seats were. “I could have a good old kip in these,” I quipped as I settled in – and I wasn’t joking. Just in case David Williamson is reading this, I should point out that I did not fall asleep during that play, but I can’t promise I won’t at some time in the future. When I do, my wife will

nudge me awake, because even though she can’t see me, she can sense when I have nodded off, no matter how subtle I think I’m being. The cinema and theatre environment is really entrapment. I mean it’s dark, you’re comfortable, no one is watching and ... I’m out like a light. I usually try to hold off turning my reading lamp out until about 11pm, but that has been getting earlier and earlier. I used to get through 20 pages of my book after turning the telly off, now I get through 10, or maybe just five, before I lapse into a semi-coma. The other night my wife and I were both so tired, we switched off the light and went to sleep at 9.30pm. That was embarrassing. On the weekend I could easily turn into a character from a sitcom – the dad snoring on the couch with the newspaper over his head. And ... loving it.
