Every so often I institute a blitz on manners at my place.

My two children, aged seven and 11, can be relied on for a polite please and thank you, and have even mastered the art of not interrupting when I’m on the phone, but their elbows-off-the-table game could be stronger. There is every chance they will find themselves in a Modern Manners class run by our cover star, Jodie BacheMcLean, at some point. While the etiquette coach works with both boys and girls, her latest focus is on poise for teenage boys. Her lessons cover skincare and shaving to dining etiquette and the right way to ask a girl on a date. In the current #metoo climate, her work also highlights the importance of treating others with respect. As Jodie says, “I think humanity wants us to be considerate.”

All aflutter Rachel Cockrell flies by night, designing race-day millinery that’s a far cry from her day job

B

y day she crunches numbers as a financial analyst, but at night Rachel Cockrell comes alive in a flurry of feathers and finery.

Rachel is the milliner behind the label Marilyn Van den Berg, and in her Annerley home studio – mostly after dark – she creates hats coveted by racing royalty and the New York fashion pack.

Last month, 12 of her designs were on the New York Fashion Week runway in the Australian Women’s Ready to Wear Fashion Showcase. Rachel also designed the shoes worn by the models, and she’s been on a high ever since.

“I even ended up co-designing a dress, fitting and styling the models, and teaching the dressers how to get the garments on the models,” she says.

“Essentially, it was a full styling of the show, which I wasn’t prepared for, but I’m so glad I did. I’ve never done something at that level and intensity, and I loved it.”

Her headpieces even caught the eye of American department store buyers, with whom Rachel is currently in talks.

“I’d love to have a label that’s stocked in a large department store, but I’d also love to keep styling and designing clothing,” Rachel says.

It’s the “control freak” in her that prefers to style a complete race look rather than just the hat, and she’s won multiple Fashions on the Field contests doing it.

Rachel hopes millinery and fashion design/styling will become her full-time career. “My bent was never naturally towards finance, but one had to do the sensible thing, and my dad was an

accountant, so he was very happy for me to go and do something intelligent and sensible,” Rachel, 37, says.

It’s little surprise then that she named

It’s the most dramatic you can get with fashion without going full couture her burgeoning label after her mum, Marilyn, who encouraged Rachel to make her first hat in 2010.

“I’ve always loved design of any kind – interior design, fashion design, jewellery, shoes. But racewear – it’s the most dramatic you can get with fashion without going full couture, and you get the added fun of doing it for daywear.”

Her hats have been worn by TV newsreaders Kendall Gilding and Sharyn Ghidella, and were nearly donned by royalty. Princess Zara Phillips chose a piece to wear at a Magic Millions event on the Gold Coast earlier this year but bowed out due to illness.

“The whole time I was losing my mind because I was told the choice was between one of mine and another hat.

“I found out later that actually, the other hat she had was one of mine, too. It was between me and me, and none of us won,” she laughs.

Life lessons Etiquette expert Jodie Bache-McLean is using her Modern Manners classes to transform teenage boys into the gentlemen of tomorrow, writes Hannah Davies

A

boy by birth, a man by age, and a gentleman by choice. It’s a saying that Jodie Bache-McLean is fond of quoting while delivering her Modern Manners lessons to Brisbane’s teenage school boys. The classes form part of her role as director of Chic Management Brisbane and JDW. The latter refers to the famed modelling agency and etiquette school founded by June Dally-Watkins in 1950 and bought by The Chic Group in 2017.

JDW’s classes – offered to both boys and girls – are the updated version of Miss Dally’s personal development program created more than half a century ago.

But it’s young men’s development that Jodie is currently championing, given, she says, so many of them are clueless about what to do in social situations.

“I was at Ipswich Grammar ... and a young boy came up to me after class and he waited until everyone else had gone and he said, ‘Miss, can you tell me how to talk to girls?’ And I thought, this is about communication; this is about instilling confidence because young women scare the bejesus out of them.”

During training courses, Jodie takes boys aged eight and up on a “journey of transformation”, tackling everything from how to execute a confident handshake to how to ask a girl to a school formal, to the fundamentals of good skincare.

“Young men are very conscious right now about how they look. At our Iona College program (at Lindum on Brisbane’s Bayside), we show the Grade 11 boys how to adopt a skincare regimen, and rather than say that’s not masculine, you shouldn’t do that, we say that’s a great idea and you need to know about it,” she says.

“We sit there and cleanse our face and talk about who’s starting to have

young ladies and society supported that ideal. Today it is as important to instil these values in young men and help them to succeed along life’s journey, as young men face the same challenges as our daughters and sisters.”

That’s why Jodie wants the Queensland Government to fund a program rollout across state schools, so she can teach even more boys how to become gentlemen.

problems with their skin and they’re in a safe environment to discuss it.”

Respect for others and basic kindness are at the core of her teachings on manners.

“I do have challenges in some of my sessions where young men feel it’s all about equality and have actually been abused by a girl for opening a door for them. But I say, the thing with deciding to be a gentleman is, it’s your call. It doesn’t matter what other people do, as long as you are respectful.

“What do people say about you when you leave the room? You can control that and create that perception. It’s about being authentic in what you do and about having integrity.”

Students at private schools including St Laurence’s College, South Brisbane; Brisbane Boys’ College at Toowong; and East Brisbane’s Churchie have all benefited from JDW sessions.

And parents are all for it, Jodie says.

“For me, the school programs concept is incredibly important,” she says.

“As a mother of boys myself, I don’t feel there is enough out there for young men and they need some help navigating some of the issues. Boys don’t always listen to what their parents have to say.”

At 54, Jodie has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share. On a personal level, the Camp Hill resident is mum to Lachlan, 22, her son from her first marriage, and stepmum to Zac and Luke, 19 and 14 respectively, from her current marriage to construction boss Nick Xenitopoulos.

Starting out as a model at 14, Jodie quickly decided she was “just not model material”.

Instead, she took a job as a model booker at JDW and has been there ever since, clocking up an impressive 32 years.

While she’s covered a lot of roles during that time, teaching the Modern Manners

courses for girls and boys has always been her passion. Established in 1950, JDW’s deportment classes, originally designed for girls, have been extended to boys in recent years. The cost is $550 for ages 8-12, and $850 for ages 13-18.

As well as covering posture, how to build a wardrobe, dating, personal hygiene and grooming, sessions include dining etiquette.

“You can see them – they’re thinking this is not important. So I say to them, listen, there are going to be a few times in your life when knowing what to do is really going to mean a lot to you,” she says.

“One of them may be meeting the parents of someone really special to you.

They may be quite formal in the way they eat and you need to make a good impression.”

And, most importantly, pupils have fun.

“I get them to set the table for fourcourse dining, and they love it and they

really get a lot out of it. And they promise me that they’re going to go home that night and set the table for their parents.”

Jodie is also taking her Modern Manners program overseas, with visits to schools in China. The language barrier means she needs a translator but the basic teaching approach is the same.

She also runs classes for Asian tour groups who want to learn about Western etiquette; corporations in Papua New Guinea needing help with appropriate business conduct; and adults in general who are struggling to make the right impression in the corporate world.

“The China stuff is really exciting. A lot of cultural and study tours that come here spend a day at JDW. We will take them through Western dining,” Jodie says.

“It’s about them feeling confident and giving them the tools so they can say in any situation, I’ve got this.”

JODIE’S TOP TIPS 1. Wear deodorant.

2. Master the handshake; eye contact and a firm grip are essential.

3. Understand the value of a handwritten thank you note.

4. Good posture (shoulders back and chin up a little).

5. Realise that not everyone is going to like what you have to say and not everyone is going to like you – but that’s OK. And while students might come from different backgrounds, the message is the same: manners matter. “I think there’s been a resurgence of old-fashioned manners and they are now modern again. I think humanity wants us to be considerate.”

DO OTHER HOTELS HAVE RESIDENT DJS? The majority of W hotels globally have a music curator and, while I think some other hotels around the world would have resident DJs playing in their venues, they are unlikely to have a position like ours.

WHAT DOES A WORKDAY INVOLVE? Communicating/networking with DJs, finalising line-ups for our Living Room Bar and WET Deck, playing a set in one of our venues from Wednesday to Saturday and planning events. I am always on the lookout for new music, so I spend time listening to international mixes, radio shows, podcasts and the like. I am also an energetic and positive vibes warrior, so I love to spread the music vibe around W Brisbane to help pump up our teams.

I also recently headed over to W Taipei to play a couple of sets for an Australian party the team over there did to celebrate W Brisbane and mark the relaunch of the W brand back into Australia. I’m staying put for a little while now to focus on the hotel’s spring and summer programming, but next year I will definitely be getting out and about again.

WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LOVING? DJ Koze dropped an amazing album a few months back called Knock Knock, which I am loving, and Young Franco is a great Brisbane-born DJ, now Sydney based, doing big things. Keep an eye on him.

HOW DO GUESTS LIKE YOUR TUNES? The feedback has been really positive as we focus on delivering super vibey, fresh new music that people might not necessarily be familiar with but they love because the tone suits the mood and feel of W Brisbane.

In the Living Room Bar, expect to hear anything from downtempo to hip hop, funk, soul and deep house, depending on the time of day. WET Deck is a blend of percussive beats, vocal house and disco, but we will mix it up a bit as we head into summer with the launch of our Sunday sessions.

We are looking to create a buzzy, electric atmosphere that makes you just want to socialise with friends WHAT WAS YOUR ‘AHA’ MOMENT? When I was 17 there were some amazing under-18 disco parties on the Gold Coast that would sell out with 700 people just having so much fun. The DJs, through their music, were ultimately in charge of ensuring everyone had a good time and I instantly craved that feeling, so I bought a set of turntables, started buying records and I’ve been DJing ever since!

The DJ sets are not dancefloor focused; we are looking to create a buzzy, electric atmosphere that makes you just want to enjoy the fab cocktail lists and socialise with friends so you lose track of time.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My beautiful wife Tash and children Dusty, 4, and Pippi, 2, of course. I’m also inspired by creative, forward-thinking artists who aren’t afraid to take risks – musicians, fashion designers or photographers.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR STAGE NAME ‘LITTLE FRITTER’?

It was a nickname that started in my board riders club when I was 16. Basically, I’m not the tallest chap and I’m a bit of a fruity character, so a lot of the guys would say to me, ‘You’re like a little pineapple fritter’ … and from there ‘Little Fritter’ was born.

Orient impress From dawn to last drinks, this glitzy superstar excels with its glossy spread RESTAURANT Tony Harper If looks are everything, then Donna Chang is supermodel material.

It’s surely the most beautifully appointed restaurant in Brisbane – probably Queensland – and hobnobbing with the glossiest nationally. It’s a sibling to Blackbird, an amazing luxe-diner, but one that makes me feel like I’m eating in Barbara Eden’s genie bottle.

But at Donna Chang the colour and glam have been tamed to nestle inside a rather splendid heritage building, and it looks really, really special: Raffles meets 21st century Brisbane.

But looks aren’t everything – if they were Uma Thurman would be president and the guy with the comb-over would be waiting tables. And restaurants need more than beautiful rooms and comfy chairs to lure diners. When a place looks as brilliant as Donna Chang, two things happen. Your expectations rise, and your perceptions become warped by the glam.

It is a slick place with a front desk devoted to greeting and so-longing, and there is enough hubbub on both sides of the pass to keep things atmospheric – even if it weren’t housed in the most atmospheric rooms in Brisbane. And all of the accompanying bells and whistles are dialled up to the max.

That includes the thoughtfully penned drinks list from Penny Grant, one of our best sommeliers. It spruiks everything from Mosel Sekt and Margaret River, biodynamic rosé to Krug, Hill of Grace

(1998 no less) and 1er Cru Chambolle. Plus a stellar range of spirits, and a tea menu, of course. And a floor team who seem (at least on my visit) exceedingly sharp.

Chinese cuisine excite me, and dining somewhere special excites me. So Donna Chang has the chance to lobotomise me with pleasure, which it does … almost.

Some things I eat are electric, like the Donna Chang take on the pop-Chinese dish of prawn toast, here made instead with scampi, seaweed mayo and scampi roe ($24). It’s like a Tarantino film, feeding on the best of the rabble and reinventing it.

And cumin lamb buns ($12 for three, inset: short pastry, complex innards); crispy fried eggplant with fragrant chilli dressing ($16: not enough chilli, guys … not enough); roasted pork belly with coriander ($30); and chicken … spot-on. Others are simply good.

Duck pancakes ($36) should, in a place like this, be gob-smacking. What’s usually

quirky, aptly Chinese but otherwise unremarkable. The siu mai put me in raptures because I’m sitting in such a splendid place, while I want more from my duck pancakes for exactly the same reason.

It all boils down to perceptions and expectations. Regardless, Donna Chang is something exotic, exceedingly good looking and generally rather special.

Choux shines A few tricks of the trade are the key to easy eclairs, writes Alastair McLeod The secret to making a good choux pastry is to learn from your mistakes. Here are my tips to save you some trouble.

The ol’ ‘beat the dough until the mixture comes away from the side of the pot’ should really advise beating until your spoon stands upright in the mix, otherwise your eclairs may collapse. Also, when adding the eggs, the mixture looks lumpy and split at first, then as you continue, it starts to smooth but looks dry. The next stage is a smooth dough without a sheen. Continue to add just enough egg to give the dough a glossy lustre. Finally, when the eclairs are baked, prick each one with a toothpick to allow any trapped moisture to escape. And finally, have fun.

STRAWBERRY ECLAIRS, HONEY CREME PATISSIERE INGREDIENTS 125ml water 125ml milk 100g butter, diced 3g table salt 5g sugar 150g flour 4 eggs, lightly beaten 3 punnets strawberries, cut into thick slices 180g icing sugar Candied roses, to garnish

HONEY CREME PATISSIERE 500ml milk 1tsp vanilla paste 5 egg yolks 1½tbs plain flour 1½tbs cornflour 140g honey Generous pinch of salt

METHOD Preheat oven to 220C. Set water, milk, butter, salt and sugar over a medium-high heat until just shy of the boil.

Lower heat, add the flour and beat with a spatula until the mixture comes away from the side of the pot. Transfer mixture to a stand mixture with a paddle attachment.

Beat until mixture cools then add eggs little by little until incorporated. Place mixture into a piping bag and pipe eclairs onto a tray lined with baking paper. Bake in preheated oven for 15 mins until golden and crispy. Turn the oven off and leave door ajar until they are fully cold.

While the eclairs cool, make a simple frosting by pressing 3 or 4 strawberries through a fine sieve and beating in the icing sugar to achieve a smooth, thick frosting. When ready to serve, carefully cut eclairs in half. Dip the top half in the icing and sprinkle with the candied roses. Fill the bottom with creme patissiere, arrange strawberry slices on custard and pop the lids on top. Makes 20

HONEY CREME PATISSIERE Bring milk to a simmer in a medium pot, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla. In a medium mixing bowl combine egg yolks, flour, cornflour, honey and salt until smooth. Slowly whisk in the milk then return mixture to the pot and begin cooking over a low heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and pour through a fine sieve over a clean bowl. Put into a piping bag and chill well before using.

Ace of bass A childhood filled with music led to Marian Heckenberg’s love affair with strings — now she’s going for Baroque Fiona Purdon After more than 30 years as a professional musician, Marian Heckenberg is ready to push the boundaries with a rare baroque masterpiece.

The double bass player will feature in Camerata’s L’Estro Armonico concert, showcasing Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi’s passionate instrumental concertos, at QPAC next week. It is believed to be the first time all 12 concertos will be played in a single performance in Queensland.

“It’s exciting to be doing something outside our comfort zone,’’ Marian says.

“Vivaldi’s music is vital, full of life and passion. It’s a challenge to do something so trailblazing and pioneering ... With a piece like this we can put our own mark on it.’’

Marian, 48, of Ashgrove, says that soon after the death of Vivaldi (1678-1741), his works were largely ignored, until the early 20th century when the Four Seasons gained in popularity.

Italian Baroque violin virtuoso Davide Monti is coming to Brisbane to not only perform the piece with the 18-member Camerata ensemble, but he will help with the direction of the piece, which translates as Harmonic Fancy in English.

“It will be great to have our special guest from Italy because some improvisation is required,’’ she says.

Marian, a teacher at the Queensland Conservatorium, will use a unique Baroque bow, made by her brother David, a renowned instrument maker who also handcrafted her double bass.

“Musical instruments of the Baroque

period are typically six-stringed and my instrument was traditionally held vertically and played with a bow,” Marian explains.

“With a Baroque bow you can’t get as much accent, but it produces a more pure tone. Vivaldi was a strings player himself, so he had an in-depth understanding of the effects he wanted to create.’’

Marian’s childhood home in Arana Hills was filled with music, but she was the first in her family to be formally trained.

“Our family has a big passion for music.

We used to entertain ourselves with the piano, organ and accordion.”

Unfortunately, a “grumpy violin teacher’’ at her primary school turned Marian off

Vivaldi’s music is vital, full of life and passion.

It’s a challenge to do something so trailblazing taking lessons until she saw a double bass for the first time, when she was 12.

“I loved the massive size of it; I loved the deep sound of it,’’ says Marian, who studied at UQ and then the University of Southern California in the US. Not surprisingly, Marian’s seven-yearold son Jamie, with long-time partner, QSO violinist Stephen Tooke, has already started to show a passion for music. “He hasn’t started lessons yet because I don’t want him to feel pushed into it,’’ she says.

Whenever Penfolds releases Grange, there is a debate about its price.

Many people think it’s ridiculous that a bottle of wine should cost $900 – the recommended retail price for the just released 2014 vintage – while others can’t wait to hand over their money for some.

Sure, if you want a pleasant drop to help wash down a barbecued steak, there are plenty of wines for about $10 a bottle that will do the job nicely.

But if you want a wine that is ranked up there among the world’s best, then be prepared to pay big dollars.

Compared with Bordeaux First Growths or the top wines of Burgundy, it is still

several hundred dollars a bottle less and it loses little in quality comparisons.

The 2014 vintage is a very fine drop, showing dense blackberry fruit, spice, licorice and a wonderful savoury character, with typical long, fine, firm tannins.

It’s a wine that shows every sign it will age gracefully. The 1994 version, served alongside the 2014 at this year’s Penfolds Collection tasting, was still going strong and showing what lies in store for those with pockets deep enough to buy the wine and keep their hands off it for another 20 years.

I’m partial to the St Henri, the 2015 vintage released at the same time for $135, and if you think that makes it only a sixth

of the quality of Grange, you are very much mistaken. Although it sees no new oak, unlike Grange, which is matured in 100 per cent new American oak, it has a wonderful ability to live for two decades or more.

You don’t have to pay a fortune for excellent Penfolds reds – the 2017 Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro ($40), Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz ($50), 2016 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz ($50) and 2016 Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz ($60) are all worthy of a place in the cellar.

And if you want a big bruiser of a wine, it’s hard to go past the 2016 RWT Barossa Shiraz ($200).

Emerging artist Pip Spiro paints beautiful things beautifully. From conch shells overflowing with blush pink bougainvillea to botanical bouquets with a fruity twist, her large-scale paintings celebrate the colour, shape and intricacy of nature.

It’s somewhat surprising she uses watercolours to create them. The medium often lends itself to muted tones and loose form, but that’s certainly not the case here.

Pip’s art is vivid and detailed with zesty yellows, forest greens and deep plums stark against white backgrounds.

She paints them from her studio at home in New Farm, where she lives with husband Nick and daughters Sydney, 2, and Beatrix, born in early October.

Despite studying business management and working for five years in advertising in Brisbane and London, art and motherhood are now Pip’s full-time jobs.

And her art is catching the attention of buyers – all 14 of her large-scale paintings from the collection All Her Glory were sold in July at her first solo exhibition on James St, Fortitude Valley.

Blooming beauty Pip Spiro’s tropical bouquets have quickly amassed an avid following after a single sellout solo show her now sister-in-law, Anna Spiro of Black & Spiro.

“I paint every day – it fulfils me and makes me feel brand new,” Pip, 32, says.

“Growing up I always loved painting … but I always thought of art as a passion rather than something I could pursue as a career.

“I first learnt watercolour when I was about five as my dad would take his paints on beach holidays. I remember sitting mesmerised as I watched him work – layer by layer, patiently and methodically bringing the watery paint to life.”

Her own works take far longer to create.

“Because I paint botanical subjects in very fine detail at large scale, each piece

can take weeks or months to complete, so I work from photos rather than real life.

“I usually ruminate on an idea for a while … and then when the stars align for what’s in stock at the flower market and a sunny morning to photograph, I’ll shoot my idea.

“I then begin the drawing process and scaling up four or five times as I transfer from my computer screen to paper.

“Once the drawing is complete, I move on to painting, starting off super light and then working the colour and detail with up to 10 layers in some areas.”

Pip takes inspiration from her travels abroad, but also from her Brisbane backyard.

“Places like Italy and France with all those ancient locations, stories and artefacts make me feel so inspired; and I love the contrast of then coming home to the pristine, naturally stunning and simple beauty of Brisbane and our coastal surrounds,” she says.

Pip only gave birth to Beatrix in the past month, but she already has plans for her next exhibition.

“I really enjoyed the process of my last show, so I would love to create another body of work for an exhibition, perhaps later next year.

“With my first baby I never really stopped painting, and had commissions right up to and straight after her birth.

“I think this time I will take a little more time and space for family.

“I’m slowly realising that a year here or there where I’m a little less productive is nothing to worry about in the scheme of things, as I plan to still be painting when I’m 80.”

Pip says her favourite painting is always her next one.

A kind of magic Freddie Mercury was born to perform and has never been upstaged, this biopic shows BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (M) hhhjj Director: Bryan Singer Starring: Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Ben Hardy What’s most remarkable about this all-ages Freddie Mercury biopic is how well it has survived the backstage drama that dogged it almost every step of the way.

Sacha Baron Cohen, initially slated to play Queen’s iconic lead singer, left the project in 2013 due to creative differences with the remaining band members.

A year later, director Dexter Fletcher also parted ways with Bohemian Rhapsody – presumably on good terms – along with his new lead, Ben Whishaw. Although you won’t see his name in the credits (due to Directors Guild of America rules), Fletcher returned in December after director Bryan

Singer was sacked due to unexplained absences and clashes with cast and crew.

Lead actor Rami Malek transcends these behind-the-scenes obstacles – as well as an awkward prosthetic mouthpiece – to create a soulful impression of the late great rock star, successfully channelling Mercury’s sinuous stage persona in a series of concert performances underpinned by Queen’s rousing back catalogue. He even pulls off We Are the Champions’ spray-on catsuit.

When it comes to Mercury’s sexual awakening, well, let’s just say that what happens on the road largely stays on the road, although there is one sequence in a gay bar that suggests the primal excitement of this promiscuous underground scene.

And there is a party that hints at the wildness and debauchery of Mercury’s extreme lifestyle, while simultaneously introducing a future love interest. But although Bohemian Rhapsody feels like an

“authorised” version of Mercury’s story – Queen guitarist Brian May (played by Gwilym Lee) and drummer Roger Taylor (Hardy) are credited as musical consultants, it’s more than mere hagiography.

The singer’s long-term companion Mary Austin (Boynton) proves a solid counterpoint to his later liaison with obsequious personal manager Paul Prenter (Allen Leech).

Bohemian Rhapsody portrays Mercury as a man born to perform, but who struggled to find an authentic identity off stage.

And despite its chequered history, the biopic hits all the right beats, even if one suspects that some of them have been manipulated to fit the designated rhythm.

It would be nice to think Mercury’s strict, disapproving Zoroastrian dad did eventually accept his gay son – but the timing of their embrace, on the way to Live Aid, is remarkably convenient.

Bohemian Rhapsody is being promoted as a “foot-stomping” celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer. That pretty much sums it up.

Wake in fright Horror and Halloween thrills come in all forms in this collection of novels, reviewed by Fiona Purdon THE CORSET Laura Purcell Raven Books $30 This tale by an author who is fast becoming England’s new queen of horror is told through two voices. The first is the rich and beautiful Dorothea Truelove, who through her charitable work at a prison is able to explore her fascination with criminal psychology. The other narrator is Dorothea’s subject of interest, the young and poor prisoner Ruth Butterham, awaiting trial for murder. Dorothea is keen to discover whether Ruth is mad, a murderess or a victim of betrayal by her evil employer. The Corset, set in Victorian England, is a gripping and horrifying follow-up to Laura’s award-winning debut novel The Silent Companions (2017), a gothic ghost story about lifelike wooden figures.

Business is now booming for Cormoran, whose clients include a mentally ill patient called Billy, who says he witnessed a death of a young girl when he was a child; and the Minister for Culture Jasper Chiswell, who is hiding a dark family secret.

Cormoran soon realises both cases are connected. Chiswell is being blackmailed by a consortium including Billy’s violent older brother Jimmy Knight, who grew up on the Chiswell estate, scene of sinister events. The novel bristles with romantic tension between Cormoran and Robin, whose husband Matthew dons disguises to help solve the case. Expect a TV series, too.

The doors opened and people flocked to the new concept; the gamble and hard work paid off.

After five years of bringing people together locally, from interstate and overseas, Eat Street can now throw a birthday extravaganza that celebrates the establishment of an unprecedented landmark and honours a true Brisbane success story.

Co-owner and Brisbane market doyen Peter Hackworth says they want to share their birthday celebrations with all of their loyal followers by giving them a weekend of wonderful experiences as well as entertainment.

“The finale of the celebrations is a huge river fireworks display, which will take place on the Sunday evening,” Peter says.

“The weekend is really not one to be missed.”

Eat Street Northshore is asking members of the public to name the iconic trawler, which currently sits high and dry above the TrawlerDeck.

Home and away For a fuss-free family weekend away, Redcliffe’s seaside is the place to go, writes Emma Schafer When executing a family vacation with a three-year-old, plans are meticulous.

Packing is a fine art – snacks, toys, that one spoon she cannot eat without.

Day schedules are regimented – 6am breakfast at any cafe that does Vegemite toast, swimming only outside the hours of 10am-2pm, crucial to be home and winding down by 6.30pm, at the very latest. Flights – just close your eyes and wish them over.

And that’s why I am now firmly in camp staycation.

By definition, that’s the vacation you take to a plush hotel just down the road from home so if the proverbial hits the fan you’re back in your driveway in a jiff.

My latest foray was to Margate Beach, about 35km north of Brisbane – just me and Miss 3 after my husband was called to work at the last minute.

Less than an hour after leaving home, we are on the beach-view balcony of our room at the recently opened Sebel Brisbane Margate Beach. Our room has everything

we need – foremost proximity to the beach – but I also spot Appelles toiletries in the bathroom. A nice luxe touch.

As soon as we’ve made a dinner reservation at the Margate Beach House restaurant on the hotel’s ground floor, our togs are on and we’re in the water at Suttons Beach, five minutes’ walk away.

Had we the urge to walk a little further, there is Settlement Cove Lagoon with its South Bank-esque pools and the main Redcliffe shopping precinct with its cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The hotel also offers free retro bicycle hire.

After an hour in the salt water it’s back to the hotel and straight up to the rooftop pool and the promise of a fruity cocktail at the adjoining terrace bar. Miss 3 splashes about while I watch the skies turn pink and Moreton Island, in the distance, becomes a silhouette on the horizon.

At dinner I order the chilli and prawn linguine, but admittedly am most excited for the white chocolate ganache with waffle

Going strong Built around trees, this Chandler house sends the message that brick is cool, indoors and out Tonya Turner

ricks are making a comeback in the best possible way, and architect Kon Panagopoulos couldn’t be happier. A fan of the product for its thermal properties, tactile quality and minimal maintenance requirements, Kon says attitudes towards brick have changed over the past decade.

“Ten years ago brick was used sparingly, as it had gone through a period where brick was synonymous with speccy houses found through suburbia. With new ranges of brick, colours, finish and size, brick is now used in almost all our projects,” he says.

These days, it doesn’t take much convincing for Kon, director of KP Architects, to persuade clients to opt for brick over timber.

“It is a lot easier to direct clients towards brick as a primary material as there are now many good examples of the use of brick in architecture, particularly residential architecture. People are also concerned about thermal qualities as it directly relates to longterm energy savings,” he says.

After living on a 2.4ha property in Chandler for 25 years, the owners of this new home named The Three Chimney House decided to subdivide and build their dream residence.

“The kids had all moved out and with grandchildren on the way, it was time to build a new house that reflected their time in life now with a stronger emphasis on the outside,” Kon says.

A pottery kiln that needed a chimney in the owner’s small detached studio inspired the first of the home’s three brick chimneys.

The remaining two belong to double-sided fireplaces in the indoor and outdoor spaces.

“They use the fireplaces regularly during the colder months and they are wood burning, so when the fire is on the smell of burning

timber can be appreciated. The external fireplace becomes a feature of the outside terrace grounding the space, like a camp fire,” Kon says.

Strict instructions to connect to the landscape were part of the brief, as the owners had spent years lovingly growing trees at the front of the property with plans to one day build their new home there.

“The client had mapped each significant tree on the site so that the new house could be inserted without major disruption.

The kids had all moved out … it was time to build a new house that reflected their time in life now “The house was to belong to the site.”

They settled on an H-shaped plan to unite the house and the trees.

High textured brick walls protect outdoor living spaces, while the east and west wings of the H-shaped footprint form summer and winter courtyards. The family often gathers in the central courtyard where most of the activity happens.

Bricks were also used extensively inside, to blur the boundary between inside and out, and continue the clean lines, play of light and textural, tactile characteristics.

PGH Velour bricks in the pale ‘Crevole’ colour were chosen to create a shimmering effect in the sunlight and when lit at night, Kon says. The brick also pays homage to the suburb’s many 1980s brick homes.

“We wanted to play with that idea, but update it and evolve it for modern times.”

It’s not exactly a politically correct mode of transport, but when I was a kid in Hong Kong in the 1960s, rickshaws were a common way to get around.

I was going through some old photos the other day and found a picture of me and my brother sitting in one in downtown Kowloon.

It was being pulled by a wiry, weather-beaten Chinese bloke with an unfortunate overbite. He was wearing a straw hat and smiling. It was a living for him.

Rickshaws were common back then and were popular with the servicemen who came to Hong Kong on rest and recreation leave from the Vietnam War. They had probably all seen the movie The World of Suzie Wong and were living out their fantasies going from girlie bar to girlie bar by rickshaw.

We caught them occasionally as kids, but I never saw my parents in a rickshaw. My mother thought it was

cruel and my father, who was quite portly, said he wouldn’t ask anyone to drag him up and down the street.

Once, on a rainy day, a friend and I caught one from the Star Ferry to his apartment building.

We got in a race with some sailors who were drunk and keen on recreating the chariot race from Ben-Hur. The poor rickshaw drivers were virtually running down Nathan Rd until we stopped and got out.

Over the years I have watched the rickshaw trade dwindle and die in Hong Kong. Each time I have visited there have been fewer of them parked outside the Star Ferry terminals.

They used to sit there in front of their vehicles – painted red with green canopies.

In their last decades they were mostly hired just for tourists to have their photos taken in. Before they disappeared altogether, I had mine taken on numerous occasions, much to

the embarrassment of my wife. I have always explained it by saying I was helping these poor blokes earn a living.

The last time I did so, there were only three rickshaws left waiting outside the Star Ferry terminus.

I hired one for a picture but he thought he would take me for a proper ride, despite my protests. He dragged me down the concourse in front of everyone, out on to the road and then, rather terrifyingly, into the traffic, where he got a rush of blood to the head and started tearing along. I looked back to see my wife standing there with a look of horror on her face.

Cars honked their horns and drivers abused us until eventually I convinced the driver to turn around and get off the road, which he did.

Who knows? I may have been his last real rickshaw ride. The only ones you will see now are in the Hong Kong Museum of History, which is, by the way, well worth a visit.
