02 HELLO Notice something a little different? After months of planning, researching and designing – and more than a few sleepless nights – this week 100,000-plus copies of this freshly facelifted magazine hit the streets. It’s the biggest change to Brisbane News in its 23-year history, and comes with the launch of a new website (brisbanenews.com.au) that allows stories and photos to be shared on social media more easily. You’ll probably notice the brighter, whiter, thicker paper. And the size – more convenient for that coffee shop table and more portable (it now fits in my handbag). You’ll see it has been reorganised into sections for an easier read. But there’s one thing that can never change: its warm heart. So it’s apt that Logie nominee and Studio 10 co-host Sarah Harris is on our cover this week. Her story (P10) is full of hope, and heart. Brisbane News’s columnist icon Phil Brown is joined by Belinda Seeney, who shares her version of life (P8). Food critic Tony Harper (P19) is now neighbour to AM PM (P20), which showcases foodie finds. In the new At Home section, artist Michael Zavros reveals his jaw-dropping living spaces (P29).

THEN & NOW Cloudland dance hall dominated the Bowen Hills skyline before it was controversially demolished under the veil of night in 1982. It was known as Luna Park when it opened in 1940, as its builder T.H. Eslick wanted it to rival Luna Park in Melbourne. It was used by US forces in World War II, reopening as Cloudland Ballroom in 1947. Its spirit lives on in a Fortitude Valley nightclub (left) named after it.

THE CHAT

Blazing a new paper trail ELLEN POWELL, 27 Blushing Confetti creative director In defiance of a digital age in which e-calendars and emails have replaced paper ones, Ellen Powell’s hand-designed cards and diaries are unashamedly sassy and eye-catching – a bit like the founder of Blushing Confetti stationery herself. With that spirit, Ellen’s Teneriffe-based business, which she launched three years ago, has written a path from wedding invitations to a range of paper products stocked in New York, the UK, Taiwan and across Australia. “I love print. I’m a designer by trade and there wasn’t much out there in terms of invitations which brides could order,” Ellen says. “I always thought I would have a stationery business – I love paper, printing techniques, design. There’s a lot more to it than just pretty design.” The eldest of three children, Ellen grew up in Gladstone and came to Brisbane in 2006. She studied advertising at QUT and has a Bachelor of Design from Griffith University. Her elegant journals, luscious art prints and cards carry cheeky messages inspired by the events and vagaries of her daily life. Examples of the foiled cards are: It’s OK to hate your child sometimes; I like your questionable morals; Sometimes the only solution is carbs. “Even at a barbecue with family and friends, ideas will come to me and I’ll jot them down and then workshop them,” she says. “It’s funny watching people react to the cards when we’re out at trade shows or pop-ups. Sometimes people do burst into laughter. “People do appreciate the personalised packaging. It’s all a bit different.” And so much better than an email. blushingconfetti.com

Phil Brown It’s analogue of me I know, but I still do a photo album for each year It’s fun looking through old photos. And a bit embarrassing when you see a picture of yourself wearing a silly hat and looking completely deranged. As opposed to now, when I only look partially deranged. A friend fished out some old photos for me recently – one of me in that silly hat and others of a journos’ masked ball on the Gold Coast back in the early 1980s. He and I worked at the Gold Coast Bulletin at the time and we went to the ball as each other. That is, we had the photographers take our photos, blow the faces up to life size and we cut them out and wore them as masks. He was me and I was him. It was hilarious, or at least we thought so at the time. That evening I had the weirdest feeling watching myself from across the room dancing with someone. We’ve been on a bit of an old photo jag at home recently. My wife fished out some amazing old pictures from

her journalistic glory days. She has snaps of herself with Boy George and Elton John and all sorts of other luminaries. There’s even one of her with Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen. I have my own celebrity shots, and my favourite is fairly recent. It’s of me with Alan Alda when he visited last year for the World Science Festival Brisbane. Alan Alda! I was really star struck. If you haven’t looked through your old photo albums for a while I suggest you do. It’s a hoot. It’s also a bit sad, of course, because there are the inevitable photos of folk who are no longer with us, so you may shed a tear or two in the process. We have various albums of various trips, and of course we have a wedding album too. I recall showing a friend the framed hero shot from our wedding some years ago. It sits in a silver frame on a bookcase. My friend looked at it admiringly and said:

“My God, you had a mullet!” I nodded sheepishly. I have an album from a trip to visit my uncle in Hong Kong in 1985 and I showed that one to my wife recently. I was painfully thin in those days. Elegantly wasted I used to call it. “Is that really what you looked like then?” my wife asked. I didn’t take that as a compliment. I have few photos from my teenage years but a friend did dig some out recently and there we all were with our sun-bleached hair (we were Gold Coast surf rats) and washboard tummies. It’s analogue of me I know, but I still do a photo album for each year. It would take a weekend to look through all of them but I intend to set one aside soon for that purpose. I’m enjoying this process and marvelling at how young and mad I looked. I’m much older and madder now.

Belinda Seeney The tooth fairy responsible for servicing my home really needs to pick up her act. I get it, it’s not a gig with as much prestige as, say, Santa or the Easter Bunny. She works nights, gets called in with virtually no notice, and the costs of doing business far outweigh any rewards. Maybe she just senses that her services are only five visits away from redundancy so has hit the brakes and is coasting to retirement. Either way, her job performance of late has been less than stellar. I feel for her, really I do, but she’s been employed as my local tooth fairy for a solid decade now so there shouldn’t be any excuse for shoddy workmanship. Her litany of failures include forgetting to compensate for teeth in a timely fashion, short-changing her clients, and quite unacceptable levels of noise when collecting the discarded chompers.

The first resulted in an earlymorning defensive play and diversionary tactics not seen since the last NBA playoffs, while the second was only solved with a soothing application of pancakes while a search was mounted for the “misplaced” coins. The noise complaint, however, proved her undoing with the first customer she visited in my abode. It would appear the issue arose when the young man of the house decided a glass of water next to his bed was not a safe enough haven for his precious tooth – particularly if burglars chose that exact night to storm our sanctum. The canny chap thought it wise to hide his tooth for protection, forcing an exasperated tooth fairy to search high and low for the pearly treasure. I believe it was while on hands and knees, gripping a torch between her teeth, as she searched under beds and behind toy boxes that the little

cherub’s eyelids fluttered open and he caught the panicked gaze of the flustered fairy. Her latest indiscretion could have been avoided if she’d simply honed her forward-planning skills. How hard is it to stash away a gold coin or two when prompted by any of the several dozen times her client announces the wobbliness of any given tooth? That way she won’t curse – silently so as not to wake the sleeping beauty – at the children who only seem to lose teeth when the smallest denomination she’s packing is a $50 note. Her eventual solution was both admirable and questionable. From what I could piece together, it would seem she stealthily broke into the young lady’s money box, retrieved the required coin and used it to purchase her morsel of enamel. I’ve no doubt she suffered the guilts at her subterfuge and soon after replaced the requisitioned coin three or four times over.

COVER STORY

Winning the

good fight Silver Logie nominee Sarah Harris has risen from struggle street to TV fame, but don’t dare call her tale a sob story Kristy Symonds

MADE IT ... Sarah Harris reveals her rise to Logie nominee is a story of triumph over adversity, at Spicers Balfour Hotel, New Farm. Picture: Ric Frearson

Reading to her baby son before bed at night, Sarah Harris is all too aware how fortunate her little family is. The Studio 10 co-host – and now Logie Awards nominee – and her husband Tom Ward have the luxury of time and money to ensure their perpetually happy 15-month-old, Paul, has a comfortable and stable life. “There are parents that simply can’t be home to tuck the kids into bed or read to them of a night or help them with their homework because they have to work a double shift to put food on the table or pay the rent,” the 35-year-old says. “I look at my little boy and just think he’s very fortunate to be where he is.” Sarah’s perspective comes from a childhood lived in stark contrast to that of her son. But it’s not a “sob story” – that’s something she is very firm about and much of the reason she only recently chose to reveal her tale of growing up in housing commission properties and caravan parks. “I am actually really proud of that background and of where I have come from, and I want people to judge me on my work,” she says. “It’s actually this incredible story of triumph for me and it is something that has given me the drive and a bit of a chip on my shoulder to prove everyone wrong and to push myself forward.” That chip on her shoulder is more a piece of firewood within her. She’s still full of drive – more a zealous journalist at heart than a host – and strikingly down to earth. Her love for Paul is palpable. Leaning across the table at Spicers Balfour Hotel in New Farm, she takes out her phone. “Can I just show you this little video?” she asks, beaming

11

with pride. On the screen, her bubbly blond boy giggles as he blows kisses to his daddy over FaceTime. “I don’t think children complete people but he’s just added this whole new dimension to my life. It’s almost like my life has gone from black and white pre-Paul to Technicolor. I just love him and everything about him. He’s just so happy all the time.” Sarah describes herself as having been more of a “worrisome kid”, not pessimistic, but certainly anxious. She was born in western Sydney to a single mother, Barbara, who was 18. Along with her brother, three years younger, they moved to Bribie Island when Sarah was seven. Barbara spent much of her time working in pubs and bars to provide for them. “After becoming a mother I have gained a whole new respect for what it must have been like for her, the challenges she was up against,” Sarah says. “Having us kids and her against the whole world. I think I got my feminist qualities from her. “She was very much of the opinion that you can grow up and you can be anything you want to be, you should earn your own money and you should study hard at school, like ‘I want a better life for you, I don’t want you to feel like you’re stuck’. “As testament to that, today I am where I am and my little brother is an engineer in London – he’s off-thecharts smart.” Sarah only went to high school for a week on Bribie Island before returning home in tears and declaring she would never go back. “I had a really tough time there with some of the kids and I hated it,” she says. Her mother let her transfer to

Caboolture State High School, which she says was the making of her. “There were a couple of teachers who saw maybe a passion and a bit of a knack for writing and they fostered that in me and they believed in me, which was awesome,” she says. “That school and those teachers put me on the path to where I am today. It was actually them that placed me at Channel 7 (in Brisbane) when I was 16, and that led to me getting a job in television. I owe so much to that school and those teachers.” Her upbringing, fondness for education and maternal nature go hand in hand with her role as an ambassador for The Smith Family Foundation, which works to improve educational outcomes for children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. “The best way to empower kids is to educate them and give them something to feel good about learning,” she says. “Finding

Despite her successes, Sarah, who studied at the Queensland University of Technology and is now based in Sydney, says memories of her childhood still fuel an irrational fear. “My biggest fear is losing our house,” she says. “I’ll say to Tom, ‘We’re going to lose the house, we’re going to lose the house’ and he will be like, ‘What is wrong with you?’ It’s because it has taken me so long to put down roots and feel secure and safe.” The addition of Paul to her life has also helped assuage one of her other big insecurities: keeping her job in the tough world of TV journalism. Sarah reveals she wants to put that anxiety aside and take time off work to try for another baby at the end of the year. “Until then, I just want to put my head down and work really hard,” she says. “It’s hard to step away and I think television is this weird, unusual beast that makes everyone superinsecure, and as much as you try and rise above that, there’s still a niggling thought in the back of your mind that if you go away, they will take that (position) away from you.”

But the outpouring of love and support she has received from her loyal Studio 10 viewers since she fell pregnant with Paul has given her confidence. “There’s this one lady in particular, Pam, and she’d travel down from the Central Coast – which is like a threehour train trip – every day just to see us,” she says. “She’s on the pension, and on Paul’s first birthday she gave me a $5 note and said, ‘I know it’s not much but can you put this in Paul’s piggy bank?’ I was like, ‘I can’t take this’. “I know that was a big thing for her because I’ve been there and you don’t forget that. When you’re scrimping and scraping and trying to make every dollar count, five bucks can be a massive deal. “But she said, ‘You need to be gracious and take it’, so it’s in Paul’s money box and it’s going towards his school fees and education in the future. That’s really beautiful. “I hope that for all the work I’ve done over the past few years I’m not a flash in the pan and people do still find a little place for me in their lounge room from time to time.” TO FIND OUT more about how you can sponsor an Australian child, go to thesmithfamily.com.au

TRAILBLAZER

Law and food order INES SCHOLTES, 25 Owner, Mylk + Ko, New Farm How did Mylk + Ko come about? The goal was to have one location where you could get an acai bowl and a hot breakfast and raw treats – all of them together. You can’t get it all in one place in Brisbane. It’s always been a goal to have the hot food menu. Who or what inspires you? People who do go out and follow their dreams. That’s something I started to realise in the last couple of years of uni, where I was studying a dual degree in law and arts. You don’t have to do what society wants you to do. This idea that you go to uni, you do your degree, and that it’s expected that you pursue what you study. For me, the big thing was that I wasn’t prepared to put in this much at a law firm. I’m working ridiculous hours, but at least it’s for myself. I

realised that I could do what I wanted if I put my mind to it. Now I’m doing what I’m passionate about. Where are you happiest? At the moment, it’s in bed. It’s the really little things, like being home by four in the afternoon. If I wasn’t getting Mylk + Ko up and running it would be at the beach, or hiking. I love Maleny, and Mount Tamborine. What are you passionate about? For me it’s not about myself, it’s about other people. It’s a big motivator for me. I’m not strictly gluten-free or dairy-free, or coeliac. I just prefer to eat that way. But a lot of people are. There’s this notion that gluten-free just tastes like cardboard, or involves just salads. But that isn’t the case. I’m hoping that the hot menu and the baked foods will be a point of difference. Mackenzie Phillips

Acting has been the driving force for Emma Jackson since she started performing impromptu home concerts as a child. “My cousins and I would put on a show for the parents. I would do the directing, and of course I would always take a lead role,’’ she says. “Being on stage is still my happy place. I can’t imagine my life without acting.” Emma’s current “happy place” is as one of the key actors in Queensland Theatre’s Once in Royal David’s City, opening at The Playhouse Theatre, QPAC, on Apr 22. Former Queensland Theatre artistic director Michael Gow wrote the play, which is about a theatre director, Will – played by Jason Klarwein – who is spending Christmas with his recently widowed mother in Byron Bay. Will starts to question his own life – as an artist, a son, and as a citizen of the world – when his mum falls ill. Sydney-based, Perth-bred Emma, 40, plays Jess, a university friend of Will’s. “Michael Gow is one of Australia’s top living playwrights. He writes with such heart, and this play is one of his best,” she says. “Even though it is sad, the play is

Michael Gow’s

also very uplifting in a lot of moments. Changing patterns of home GALLERIES Sally Browne A splash of colour and a wash of nostalgia will greet visitors who step into the Red Hill Gallery on Musgrave Rd. Their current exhibition features Queensland and NSW landscapes, many of which will be recognisable to locals. Tim Graham, Nick Olsen and Ken Strong are the three artists featured in the gallery’s Treasured Places exhibition, on until the end of the month. Tim Graham, who lives in Woodgate, south of Bundaberg, and Brisbane’s Nick Olsen focus on Brisbane city streets where the Queenslander house is the cute wild animal in its native habitat. Tim also takes us into those homes with some colourful interiors. Ken Strong from Hannam Vale, south of Port Macquarie, completes the picture with works that take in the sweep of rural NSW. What’s striking, though, is how colourful these houses are compared with the ones we see outside. The current trend seems to be to render Queenslander houses in neutral colours: 50 shades of mushroom, taupe and grey. While this may seem elegant and modern, I much prefer the quirky variety of colours of the Queenslanders of my youth. As any Brisbane resident would know, it’s also a landscape that’s quickly changing – as character homes are updated, modified and modernised, and many spaces are being replaced by apartment blocks. Artists often record the present they see around them, but soon this present might become a thing of the past. So it’s worthwhile stepping inside the gallery for a glimpse of the world we live in – and even take a piece home. “What we’ve found in the past is that when people move away, they like to take those paintings with them that are of that Queensland style

VIBRANT TONES ... (clockwise from main) Nick Olsen’s St Brigid’s from Paddington, Ken Strong’s Pittwater Pale Day, and Tim Graham’s Red Hill evoke a sense of nostalgia for the city that once was and may be disappearing before our eyes.

TREASURED PLACES Until Apr 30 Red Hill Gallery 61 Musgrave Rd, Red Hill Ph: 3368 1442, redhillgallery.com.au because I think it tugs on people’s heart strings,” Red Hill Gallery’s Jan Griffith says. “But even people that live in Brisbane love to have these scenes in their homes. When you see so many old Queenslanders that are maybe being knocked down … these

paintings are really reminiscent of – I hate to say it – but a time gone by.” Although Nick and Tim use bright colours, their palettes are very different. They also paint very different takes on similar scenes – for example, they both have works that feature different

aspects of St Brigid’s Church in Red Hill. Whatever the case, the artworks evoke a beautiful nostalgia. Sometimes it’s the role of the artist to preserve our collective memories and sometimes it takes an artist’s eye to help us see what’s around us. Phil Brown is on leave

Frightening fashion faux pas FILM Vicky Roach PERSONAL SHOPPER (MA15+) hhhjj Director: Oliver Assayas Starring: Kristen Stewart Running time: 105 minutes Malevolent spirits, ill-tempered fashion divas, the Paris traffic ... Kristen Stewart has many obstacles to overcome in her second film with French director Oliver Assayas (Clouds of Sils Maria). But it’s the line “she vomited some ectoplasm and left” that ultimately brings her unstuck. Not many actors could deliver a piece of dialogue like that. And Stewart isn’t one of them. Assayas may have written this ghost story for his androgynous American muse, but the role somewhat paradoxically draws attention to Stewart’s limitations. When used well (Into the Wild, Still Alice, Cafe Society), she’s an arresting screen presence. But the flatness of Stewart’s intonation works against her in this film, as does the selfconsciousness of her body language — in stark contrast to the pair’s previous collaboration, for which the actor won

CHIPS (MA15+) hjjjj Director: Dax Shepard Starring: Dax Shepard, Michael Pena Running time: 101 minutes FILTHY but fun, the 21 Jump Street movie satirised ’80s pop culture with the help of a raucous team effort from Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. The tongue-in-cheek film adaptation of Starsky & Hutch successfully flashed Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller back to the ’70s. Unfortunately, Dax Shepard (director and star as motorbike cop Jon Baker) doesn’t really have a concept for his reboot of the long-running TV series CHIPS, another tale of two mismatched officers. And it shows. Shepard’s main reason for plucking the ’70s series out of the remake pile seems to be a lifelong obsession with

a Caesar (or French Oscar) for her supporting performance opposite Juliette Binoche. Maureen Cartwright (Stewart) is the personal shopper of the title — an occupation that mainly involves navigating Paris’s narrow streets on her moped, picking up expensive items from high-end fashion designers for her boss to wear to high-profile openings, and dropping them off at the apartment. Cartwright has little time for her moody, entitled employer but the job pays the rent while she remains in Paris to fulfil her promise to her late twin brother. “I’m a medium. He was a medium,” she explains at one point. Cartwright made a pact with Lewis, who died from the congenital heart defect she has also inherited, to stay in his adopted city long enough to allow him to make contact with her from the afterlife. To this end, she spends nights alone in the sprawling, rundown house he was renovating with his French partner. But instead of her sibling, Cartwright encounters a terrifying female spectre. Soon afterwards, she begins to receive creepy anonymous texts encouraging her to indulge her

motorbikes. Since over-the-top pile ups were a signature of the original show, he “updates” the franchise with vulgar humour. An R-rated CHIPS might have worked — if the screenplay had been more sophisticated. Buddy movies rely on the chemistry between leads, but Shepard and Michael Pena struggle in this lowbrow low point in the history of both buddy movies and TV remakes. Now showing

DRESS UP ... Kristen Stewart, playing a young medium, is fashionably intense in the horror tale Personal Shopper.

secret desires. In an unnerving sequence recalling Jean Genet’s The Maids, Cartwright gives in to the illicit impulse to dress up in her employer’s outfits — which looks bad when her employer is found gruesomely murdered.

Assayas is clearly fascinated by the Twilight star, and they share the sort of intense, creative spark that encourages their audience to stay the distance. They aren’t rewarded. Personal Shopper ends up going nowhere. Opens April 13

LAND OF MINE (MA15+) hhhhj Director: Martin Zandvliet Starring: Roland Moller, Louis Hofmann Running time: 101 minutes On first pass, it seems — well, if not fair, then just. German soldiers buried millions of mines on Denmark’s beaches during their occupation of the country for almost all of WWII. Surely it was their job to defuse those mines when the Allies finally won. Sergeant Carl Rasmussen (Roland Moller) — who illustrates his pent-up rage in the film’s opening sequence by beating up a vanquished soldier after finding he has souvenired a Danish flag — feels nothing but contempt for his German occupiers. Even when Rasmussen meets the group of POWs that have been assigned to him — some as young as 15

— he doesn’t waver. But as, one by one, the kids are blown up or maimed, the ethical complexities of his situation start to become apparent. Over time, he can’t help but develop relationships with his young charges. He, like his audience, is forced to question notions of justice, culpability and retribution much more rigorously. Land of Mine was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Now showing

REVIEW

Near adventure in every clever bite RESTAURANT Tony Harper The population can be neatly divided between folk who like tricky food and those who hate it. I love it, but it needs to be done well and have a purpose – an adventure in every bite. I took a friend who loves good food – as long as it has both feet on the ground – to Bacchus, the star restaurant at Rydges South Bank. It’s fairly formal – the kind of dining room that’s almost extinct in Brisbane – not stuffy but contemporary and luxurious, the music a few decibels above subliminal but outgunned by the clinking of cutlery on china. Bacchus houses a serious wine list. Like the dining room, it has feet in both the old-school camp and something more contemporary, and has some smart wines by the glass. Abruzzo-born Massimo Speroni came to head the Bacchus kitchen about a month ago, and he did so with all sorts of credentials, including a stint as sous chef at San Domenico, a two-Michelin-star restaurant in Italy. His menu reads brilliantly, with a “Raw and Cured” section (carpaccio, tartare, oysters), plenty of offal (tongue, sweetbreads, foie gras) and an array of more substantial stuff. It’s obvious that Speroni prizes visual appeal: there’s more colour than a Ken Done pullover, and the components of every dish are arranged in twirls and spirals, columns and smears.

LUXURY LOOK ... Bacchus at Rydges, South Bank, is a contemporary fine-dining restaurant, featuring dishes such as slow-cooked tongue (above, left).

At times it works, at others it doesn’t. Take, for example, the foie gras ($34). The menu talks of smoked potato, seasoned vegetables and aged balsamic, with mulard duck the origin of the foie gras. The smoke came via a glass cloche filled with the stuff, unveiled as it landed on the table. Nicely dramatic. And the smoke certainly permeated the potato – a mountain range of mash planted with the seasoned vegetables.

The foie gras – too thin, nicely browned, but overcooked – was surrounded by dots of balsamic, while a star-shaped crouton sat to the side. It was a case, I think, of the visuals taking precedence over the star ingredient … foie gras. The tongue was better – cooked low and slow (24 hours), and plated with white balsamic gel and chargrilled avocado ($29). Sweetbreads ($30) were a touch overcooked, but

otherwise good, and a main of chicken, herb salad and tarragon ($42) was pretty smart. Desserts seemed more thoughtful than the savoury dishes. Given Speroni’s reputation and the menu’s potential, I expected more from the food. It could be something quite special. As it stands, Bacchus is a very good fine-dining restaurant with excellent service, a terrific drinks list and lovely surroundings.

Sourdough worth the wait AM Crust & Co, Wilston Tucked away in a backstreet on the Wilston/Newmarket border a long line snakes across the carpark of a mechanic shop to an otherwise nondescript side door entrance to Crust & Co. The artisan bakery, housed in a larger red-brick bakehouse, offers a seasonal menu of breads, croissants, baguettes, quiche, sweet pies and coffee. Offerings include traditional sourdough ($7.50); infused breads, which are changed daily to delights such as a fennel and raisin loaf ($8.50); pain au chocolate ($3.50); and warm, crispy slices of banana bread ($2.50). The sourdough is a highlight – soft inside with a crunchy crust, it is a good break from the usual stone-hard offerings. But get in early or miss out.

WHY QUALITY MATTERS

“Did you know that approximately 1 in 8 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer over their lifetime?“ “I know I need a mammogram but does it really matter where you go? I thought all mammograms are the same?” No – breast imaging is a subspecialty in radiology and some mammograms are better than others. difw has been the private breast imaging provider of choice in Brisbane since 1998, under the care of Dr Paula Sivyer, our founding radiologist. Dr Sivyer’s reputation in breast imaging is unsurpassed in Queensland and she has trained a team of dedicated imaging professionals who share her passion for providing breast imaging that is a cut above the industry standard.

Our better breast imaging experience includes: • no waiting list • same day results • 3D mammography available • all referrals accepted • ave appointment time 1.5 to 2 hours (imaging only, assumes no biopsy).

We compare imaging year after year, thanks to our large digital data archive, so you know the subtlest changes in breast tissue are logged and assessed. We provide results on the day, so you don’t have to worry.

HEAVEN SCENTS

Leesa Maher Some of the most memorable beauty looks at New York Fashion Week had a common denominator: beautifully defined, spiky, spidery lashes. Make like the models at Jeremy Scott and La Perla with a few tips from celebrity make-up artist and Priceline creative director Rae Morris. First, she recommends a neutral eyeshadow base that will allow lashes to take centre stage, then a nude eye pencil on the inner waterline to open up the eye. Next, apply several layers of mascara. Once done, group eyelashes into spidery points with the tip of the mascara wand and wiggle them into place. Or use tweezers to pinch lashes together in small groups while mascara is wet. For a more dramatic effect, apply false lashes before applying mascara.

WELLNESS

Mind over chocolate Fiona Purdon Easter can become a minefield of temptation for those watching their waistline, but Dr Helena Popovic says don’t stress: it is possible to have your chocolate and eat it too – or, at least, some of it. The doctor, brain specialist, international speaker, fitness instructor and author of the awardwinning book NeuroSlimming says it’s not what you eat, it’s how and why you eat that’s important when trying to manage your weight. “The state of our mind and emotions affects how we digest and metabolise food,” she says. “It is important to eat in a state of calm and to feel good about what you are eating, and to feel that connection between mind and body. It is important to pause and wait to see what your body is telling you.” NEUROSLIMMING by Dr Helena Popovic, Penguin/Viking, $35

1

ACCEPT IT IS WHAT IT IS

It is important that women embrace their body shape. The more they diet and try to avoid certain foods, the more the brain and body will crave them. It is important to be relaxed around food, to eat mindfully, and to follow the body’s own signals rather than a diet that is difficult to maintain. People should build a connection between body and mind and listen to the needs of the body.

health & beauty At Lutwyche City

2

ENJOY SAVOUR THE MOMENT

Eat small pieces of quality chocolate, and try to eat slowly and savour every bite. By eating more slowly, you will be satisfied faster and you will have eaten less. Don’t multi-task when eating – focus solely on eating so the brain is tuned in when the body signals it has had enough. By rushing around when eating, you are saying to your body that you don’t deserve to stop and nourish yourself. About 2.5 million Australians either cut short their lunch break or are too busy. When I eat chocolate, I have one square, often a dark chocolate with a hint of mint and orange, and sit looking at my garden, and I really savour the taste.

3

BALANCE WATCH OUT

Avoid chocolate where fat and sugar are in equal measure. Don’t buy cheap, poor-quality compound chocolate or soft, creamy chocolates, which have the highest levels of fat and sugar. Cacao has been around for more than 4000 years but the ancient South Americans and Central Americans did not have obesity problems. Cacao is naturally good for lowering blood pressure – ancient civilisations often mixed it with banana. Obesity is only a recent phenomenon. Sugar is addictive, and the most addictive foods are those that have sugar and fat in equal proportions, such as cheesecake and doughnuts. There is no food in nature that has a 1:1 ratio of sugar and fat.

4 GUILT DON’T DO IT The worst thing chocolate lovers can do is feel guilty about eating chocolate at Easter. If people are having negative thoughts about eating, that can lead to their body entering a state of stress around food. When our bodies are stressed, they produce more cortisol, which actually stimulates the body to crave more fatty foods. Also, when bodies are in a state of worry, more fat is naturally stored – it is the body’s reaction to handling the extra stress.

love the skin you’re in At Lutwyche City, we’ve made it a little easier to take some time out for yourself. Enjoy a Napoleon Perdis express makeover, indulge in a fresh haircut or nail treatment, achieve eyebrow perfection, treat yourself to a full body massage or spend some time at one of our gyms.

5

QUALITY IT MATTERS

You should choose quality chocolate over quantity. Look for chocolate that has a high percentage of cacao. The Swiss, for example, eat more chocolate than any other nationality – 9kg a year – yet they don’t have an obesity problem (they are not even in the top 100 countries in terms of obesity). Not only does high-quality chocolate usually have less fat and sugar, it is more satisfying because it engages all the senses. One or two pieces is enough to satisfy.

Staycation beckons Sometimes you don’t have to venture very far from home to find the perfect spot to relax and recharge Kristy Symonds

ESCAPE TO THE CITY ... Sage Hotel James Street is a modern, stylish haven in one of Brisbane’s most vibrant shopping and entertainment precincts.

Never underestimate the power of a staycation. My fiance and I were keen to recharge the batteries when we checked into the shiny new Sage Hotel James Street on a drizzly Saturday afternoon. Having only just opened its doors on March 1, the entire place is filled with that heavenly “new” scent, and every inch practically sparkles. Opening the door to our top-level boutique hotel room – one of 93 set across four levels – to be hit with the most exquisite view of the Brisbane City skyline and the Story Bridge, we instantly unwound. Dropping our bags, we made our way to the private balcony to soak in stretches of blue sky dotted with dark rain clouds. From the outside, Sage stays true to traditional elements of the watering hole it is nestled to – the Queens Arms Hotel – but inside, it’s sleek, modern and stylish. However, as tempting as it was to cosy up and stay in our own little slice of heaven, the hotel is all about location, location, location, and only a fool would miss the opportunity to take full advantage of the iconic James St precinct at its doorstep. It’s easy to spend hours wandering through the divine designer stores at our fingertips – and that’s exactly what we did. I chose to empty my Mimco pouch at Mac Pro, Mecca Cosmetica, Pottery Barn and West

Elm. Shopping-induced hunger was quick to set in so we headed back to the hotel to watch the sun set from our balcony while nibbling on a cheese platter and sipping wine. We happily babbled about work and life while waiting for the intense orange glow to fall behind the buildings. Suddenly our stresses seemed very far away. With dinnertime upon us in an area that embodies the notion of treating oneself, we were spoilt for choice, but opted for a candlelit pasta meal at Bucci Restaurant and Bar. It may have been a weekend, but a night in has never appealed more. Luxe linens and cloud-like pillows on the bed and a minibar stocked with local Brisbane providores awaited us in our cleverly designed room. Another stand-out feature wooing us back is the beautiful, white, well-lit bathroom with a big, inviting tub. When morning broke, we decided to comfort ourselves with breakfast at Fortitude Valley institution Harveys Bar and Bistro. With one final stretch on our heavenly bed, we bade farewell to our lovely retreat, relaxed and rejuvenated for the week ahead.

Tonya Turner Anyone who knows artist Michael Zavros’s work might be surprised by his home. Luxury, narcissism and beauty are all words used by critics in relation to his photorealist paintings, but the house he shares with his wife Alison Kubler and their three children Phoebe, 11, Olympia, 9, and Leonidas, 5, is a blank canvas that could be described as somewhat dishevelled. In the lounge room, the roof is sagging and leaking on to an aluminium artwork, leaving rust marks along the walls. In the hallway, cobwebs line the ceiling and exposed beams. The couple bought the single storey house on a 3ha property in Chandler 10 years ago when Michael was a burgeoning artist. They haven’t changed much since. The purpose of this regular four-bedroom home, with its old kitchen and terracotta tiles, is to be a treasure trove of art and stylish furnishings that tell the story of this everyday family whose grown-ups happen to be serious movers and shakers in the art world. Filling the walls are works by the who’s who of contemporary art, such as Bill Henson, Ben Quilty, Susan Norrie, Donna Marcus, Wilma Tabacco, Cherry Hood and Abbey McCulloch. “It’s all very personal because we know all the artists,” says Alison, who has worked widely as a writer and curator and is on the board of the Museum of Brisbane. A large collection of vintage taxidermy purchased from auctions and antique stores over the years is also displayed throughout the home. “Michael has been collecting it for years and people get quite upset about it but we just admire the skill in the making of it. It’s such an old and incredible tradition and we talk to the

31

kids about it so they understand it,” Alison says. In her office overlooking a courtyard, a huge musk ox head hangs over her chair. In other rooms there is a tiger, a peacock, a deer, an elk head, a springbok head and a kudu head, along with skulls of a warthog, a lioness and a horse, a whale vertebrae and snake skins, some of which feature in Michael’s work. His own art can also be found in the home, including portraits of his children. Raising the children on acreage was important to Michael, who grew up in the Gold Coast hinterland. “I wanted that lifestyle for our kids as well,” he says. “Also I don’t need to be anywhere for my work. I can be based anywhere, which is nice.” At the back of the property lies the purpose-built, architecturally designed studio where Michael, winner of the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Bulgari Art Award and a regular Archibald Prize finalist, works. It is a vast, light-filled space where the couple also hold their studio parties, hanging lights in the trees and inviting friends, family and colleagues around for everything from low-key dos to elaborate events. “As I get more established as an artist I need more space and I like having more space. It’s funny, when you have a lot of space you occupy it. You start filling it with stuff, or you start working larger or doing different things,” he says.

WILD SIDE … Alison Kubler and Michael Zavros and their comfortable family home.

Alison and Michael aren’t worried about the children or visitors damaging the valuables they have around, including a $6000 Jeff Koons Split-Rocker vase sitting in the middle of the dining room table. “In all these years the kids have never broken a thing,” Alison says. Next year they will build their dream home on the property and eventually knock down the one they’re in now, leaving parts of it in the landscape. “I’ve loved this house, it’s a fun house and it’s been great for bringing up three kids,” Alison says.

OUTSIDE

Garden sparks Tonya Turner Just because it’s autumn and the weather is starting to cool down doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your outdoor area anymore. There are plenty of heating solutions for your home’s outdoor space, but perhaps one of the most captivating is the fire pit. There is nothing quite like gathering around an open fire under the stars. Brisbane landscape architect Johanna MacMinn, of My Verandah, recently created a garden with a “Brad” fire pit for a young family of five in Toowong. “The original brief for the fire pit garden was a children’s play area. At some point through the design process ideas grew,” she says. “The fire pit is a gathering place. It is a ceremony and an occasion, and a great place to roast marshmallows.” Subtropical plants were used

throughout the garden, including bamboo, variegated gingers, plumeria pudica, philodendron xanadu, a giant bird of paradise, and a white flowering cape myrtle. The sandstone retaining wall doubles as a seating area. “The wall is curved because I wanted to add a playful element in this relaxed lower garden,” Johanna says. myverandah.com.au

WARM TOUCH … In another example of how a fire pit can be used, the Urth pit, from Brown Jordan Fires, is a $1695 pit made from fibre cement.

34 RECIPE

Hot-cross delicious Alastair McLeod

Picture: Ric Frearson. Styling: Lyndel Miller

Hot cross buns are mystifyingly on our shelves for more than four months each year, so it’s understandable that by Easter people might want to jazz them up a bit. A good quality bun is all you need. There’s no need to experiment with chocolate, mocha, apple and cinnamon, choc chip or any other dubious derivation. As a rule, I prefer food that is made for sharing. It could be a pot of soup served with a ladle, a pizza torn at the table or a platter of seafood. That said, with dessert, there is something appealing about a plate all to yourself and this is certainly a greedy “it’s all mine” pudding. Offer a jug of extra cream to share if you must.

Toasted hot cross pudding, berries, vanilla cream INGREDIENTS 150g unsalted butter 500g hot cross buns cut into 2cm cubes 250ml milk 3 eggs 230g sugar + 1 tbs 3 tsp vanilla paste 300ml pure cream, ice cream, to serve 1 punnet raspberries 1 punnet strawberries, hulled and halved 1 punnet blueberries 1 punnet kiwi berries, halved Berry coulis, to serve

Method Preheat oven to 160C. Line a loaf tin with greaseproof paper and set aside. Melt 100g of the butter in a large fry pan and fry the hot cross bun cubes in batches until golden. Set aside in a large bowl. Next, combine milk, eggs, 75g of the sugar and 1 tsp of the vanilla paste in a bowl and whisk until combined. Pour over the hot cross buns and

leave for 10 minutes to soak up the liquid. Place into terrine mould and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with the tablespoon of sugar then return to oven for a further 10 minutes and until nicely golden. Remove from oven, allow to cool then refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Turn out of mould and cut into 8 thick slices. Melt the remaining butter in a fry

pan with 35g of the sugar and fry the hot cross bun slices for 1 minute on each side. Meanwhile, whisk the cream to soft peak with the remaining sugar and vanilla. To serve, place pudding on a plate with the cream, berries and coulis. Serves 8 ALASTAIR MCLEOD is the chef-owner of Al’FreshCo. alfreshco.com.au

Try some Swedish-style whimsy Lyndel Miller Conjure up a whimsical look this Easter by taking cues from the Swedish tradition of the Paskris. Swedes have been decorating small birch tree branches for Easter since the 1800s, when they were decorated simply with feathers. Much like a modern take on a Christmas tree, but for Easter, it

makes an ideal table centrepiece for a festive feast. Select some branches and anchor them in a solid, wide-necked vase filled with sand. Jazz up the branches with origami paper birds in gold tones, painted and glitter-dipped hollow eggs and real, metal, porcelain or paper feathers. With such a detailed centrepiece, keep your place settings uniform by using only a few colours.

And for the entry hall, a glass cloche can be put to good use – picture a bed of faux moss with some ceramic bunnies to welcome guests. For the kids, add a little magic by drawing bunny footprints to your front door. Using chalk, draw one larger circle and three smaller ones above to make a paw print. This works well when tied into the fun of an Easter egg hunt.

Safe and practical Simplified colour palettes and natural elements such as stone and timber will be the hallmarks of bathroom interior design in 2017, while concealed storage spaces and easy clean surfaces will continue to reign. Greg Grant, executive director of the Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute (KBDi), says whether your preferred style is minimalistic or decorative, the bathroom should always be a safe and practical space. “To some, their bathroom is the ultimate retreat, a place to seek solace and soak away the worries of the day; to others it’s like Central Station, churning out the family one by one as each prepares for the day ahead,” he says. “For those who are renovating, the best designers will ensure your bathroom is beautiful, practical and safe.”

Savings on tables The Modern Furniture Store is having a sale on its dining tables with discounts of 20 to 40 per cent on all dining tables in store. Its central warehouse in Brisbane has a backlog of tables with slight faults, so they are being brought into the store at Fortitude Valley and reduced and sold as floor stock. As tables sell, more will be brought in and discounted, and this will continue until all the faulty tables are sold. Faults might be as minor as a scratch or small dent, and many of the issues with the oiled tables can be resolved by sanding and re-oiling. The range includes small four-seat glass tables, round and rectangular six-seat solid oak or elm tables, and three different extendible tables that can seat up to 10 people. All of the tables at The Modern are

solid and heavy, designed for everyday family use and built to last a lifetime. The faults on the damaged tables are with the surfaces only and do not compromise their integrity. Staff members at The Modern Furniture Store in Fortitude Valley are happy to show customers the range and demonstrate how the extendible tables function. Sale prices are for floor stock only and conditions apply. PH: 3254 3885 THEMODERN.NET.AU

MARKET WATCH

Discover home truths Ready to look for your dream home? These tips from REIQ ’s Antonia Mercorella could help you avoid buying a lemon 1

ILLEGAL BUILDING WORK

All building work must comply with the Building Code of Australia (which is administered by the Australian Building Codes Board) and all major renovations and building work must be carried out by a licensed builder (unless the work has been carried out by the owner and is less than $11,000). Safety is of primary importance. How to check: Ask for the plans and relevant permits for all add-ons and renovations. If those aren’t available find a reputable building inspector who will visit the property. This inspector will also be able to advise you how to bring it up to code, if it doesn’t have the correct permits.

2

FLOOD-PRONE PROPERTY

Most coastal local councils have flood maps available and they are easily found by searching Google for “flood overlay [insert town name]”. Brisbane City Council has updated its flood maps so check to see if your potential purchase is in or near a flood zone. The Department of Natural Resources (dnrm.qld.gov.au) also has a flood overlay map that is worth looking at. How to check: If your home is near a flood zone, check if it’s a sloping block and which direction the water comes from. Your property may not technically flood, but if nearby streets flood and your street is lower, you may get a lot of water. Ask the neighbours.

3

UNSTABLE FOUNDATIONS

4 ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Moving foundations are generally evident by cracks in the interior walls or on the exterior brickwork at the base of the building. Cracks in the plasterwork are harder to spot than cracks in the foundation because interior cracks can easily be plastered and painted over for the sale process. Foundations can become unstable if a house has been built on timber stumps. How to check: Look closely at the brickwork along the base of the building, all the way around. If there are any cracks or gaps in the mortar consider calling in a building expert who can advise you on the foundations.

Moisture can be problematic, especially if the property is built on timber foundations. It can rot timber foundations, swell floorboards, and cause myriad structural problems. Termites are common, but if the sellers have had the areas treated it’s OK to buy. Ask about their pest treatments and speak with their pesticide agent. How to check: Look for bubbles in the paintwork, especially near skirting boards. Ask a tradesman or a building inspector to take a moisture meter reading. A qualified building expert can advise on remediation measures. A building and pest inspection will tell you if there are termites.

Sense of family The Mulcahy family arrived in Brisbane for work, but after renovating a property in New Farm, they came to appreciate the city’s charm and sense of community. When Ana and John Mulcahy first relocated to Brisbane, they wanted to live close to the city. After first renting at Teneriffe, they bought their residence in Lower Bowen Tce, New Farm, and set about completely renovating it. Mrs Mulcahy said not only did they love their property, but they also became immersed within the community and loved the area. “We fell in love with Brisbane, essentially,” she said. “We were always only going to be there for a work stint, and then it just grew on us as a home. “We purchased this house that required renovations; it had great bones and good-sized land.”

The residence was gutted during the renovations and transformed into the large family home it is today. “It was very much about Queensland living, I guess, so we loved that space and the kitchen area,” Mrs Mulcahy said. “It is just wonderful how all the glass pulls back and you are suspended over the swimming pool.’’ The property is on a 1012sq m block with 25.1m of street frontage.

Horoscope with Tanya Obreza VIRGO

ARIES

(August 24 - September 22) The truest test of character often arises in emergencies. But is there really a crisis, or is someone being overly dramatic? Step back from the hysteria surrounding you and calmly reassess the situation. It’s a fairly safe bet that the future’s not totally doomed.

(March 21 - April 20) The cosmos offers you some hearty encouragement to catch up with old friends and finally enjoy some deserved time out. Those who are more carnally inclined should leave their particulars with Venus. This love goddess is ready and able to point a delightful new someone your way.

CANCER

(April 21 - May 20) The cosmos advises against compromise this week – for good reason. Being pushed into not-sosatisfactory situations or having to take the blame at work because of someone else’s mistakes is not acceptable. Stand your ground and let destiny work in your favour.

(June 22 - July 22) This week is more inclined to give you a spiritual nudge rather than financial flow. Take the compassionate route rather than the materialistic and you could stumble across that ever-elusive inner dimension. Maybe it’s not as deeply hidden as you think.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21) Geminis can be candid – sometimes too much so. Why should everyone know your business? Sure, there are plenty who want to, but believe me, it’s not their birthright. Keep some secrets to yourself. Offer little more than your name, rank and serial number.

LEO (July 23 - August 23) Leo’s focus is fixed on finances at the moment, giving you an opportunity to increase your income. Start saving now and you’ll soon have plenty to spare for that proverbial rainy day. Jobs connected with finances or the media do particularly well. The same applies for those linked with health care.

(September 23 - October 23) Much as you’re trying to get back to normal, prepare yourself for more disruption. Communications are crossed, travel is tricky and payments are missed. Is someone deliberately sabotaging your efforts? Deeper investigation should shed light on the situation.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) You don’t need a four-leaf clover in a week that promises many golden opportunities. But not everything will land in your lap. Expand horizons through travel or new studies. Alternatively, step out in search of a new job. The cosmos helps those who help themselves.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) While your constitution doesn’t readily give in to illness, a downfall could be your love of good food and wine. At the best of times, diets come

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Telling it as it is just might help you get what you want this week. You could also be worried that an opportunity is passing you by. Don’t worry; a seed has been planted. A bit of hard work and determination will do the rest. From tiny acorns do mighty oaks grow.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 18) Here is a week in which every move, whether it be upward or wayward, goes towards creating a more complete you. Aquarians effectively want carte blanche to be themselves. Should emotional issues invade relationships, perhaps some ground rules need changing.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20) New career opportunities suggest a reshuffle – and if you are prepared to accept a last-minute offer, you could land yourself a fabulous new job. But it’s not all work and no play for Pisces. With romance flourishing, couples develop a deeper commitment, while singles might happen upon someone new. tanyaobreza.com
