For me, Christmas isn’t complete without a screening of Love Actually. I have lost count of the number of times I have watched this classic rom-com, yet I still chuckle when Hugh Grant, as the British PM, gyrates to The Pointer Sisters’ Jump, and tear up when Emma Thompson’s character discovers a painful truth. It’s a fabulous festive flick, and now Brisbane audiences can experience it cabaret-style courtesy of Naomi Price. The musical theatre star is set to perform the movie’s soundtrack as a stage show and, in this week’s Cover Story (P8), she reveals just who will be joining her on stage – as well as her plans for 2019. Amber McMahon plays it cool as a femme fatale in a fast-paced ’50s classic

ho says no to starring in a theatre adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest thriller, North

by Northwest? Not Amber McMahon, that’s for sure. The Sydney actor jumped at the chance to play femme fatale Eve Kendall – the role made famous by Eva Marie Saint in the 1959 film – in the stage production opening at QPAC this month.

“It’s exciting to tap into the beautiful nostalgia of the piece and to remind people of why they love this film,” she says. “You are really transported immediately to the time of the 1950s. It’s a piece still as beautiful and thrilling and sumptuous as the original. The show goes at a cracking pace, you need great energy and pizzazz.’’

Amber is excited to bring the play to Brisbane after two successful Melbourne seasons. As Eve, she inhabits elegant 1950s-inspired costumes by Esther Hayes, while the show boasts a striking production design and clever props.

Matt Day stars as suave advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill (played by Cary Grant in the movie), who finds himself mixed up with a secret spy society after a case of mistaken identity.

He meets Eve on a train in the fast-paced story, which moves across the United States, from New York to South Dakota. Amber says Matt is “very debonair and charming’’ in the role, while she is in her element as Eve. “I didn’t want to mimic or replicate Eva Marie Saint’s performance – it’s about finding the balance of paying homage to the film, but it’s also important to find the heart and soul of a character yourself,” she says.

“Eve is super-intelligent, she is probably the most complex character in the story. She is razor sharp ... she is torn between her own personal feelings and her work. She can’t let anything break that cool exterior.”

On paper, the film, which features a car chase, rail trip, and an iconic plane scene, would seem nigh on impossible to transfer to the theatre, but Amber says director Simon Phillips and writer Carolyn Burns have nailed it.

“This is where the theatre magic comes in. There’s nothing better than getting a script that seems to have impossible demands and puts everyone’s creativity to the test,” she says.

“I love how inventive the production is, and how it’s handled with such theatrical flair … it’s an ingenious representation of the spirit of the film.”

Jingle all the way Musical theatre star Naomi Price is set to sing her way into your heart this Christmas, writes Belinda Seeney

don’t remember the first time I watched Love Actually but I do have a really vivid memory of falling in love with the music,” Naomi Price recalls. She was 20 years old, catching the bus to and from her casual Christmas job at Churchill Square Shopping Centre in Brighton, UK. She would stake her seat on the top level of the double-decker bus then slip the movie soundtrack into her Discman for each half-hour journey.

For 15 years, the songs symbolised Christmas for Naomi, who now lives at Stafford with partner Luke Kennedy, and this year they take on a special sparkle as she launches her new show, Christmas Actually, at La Boite Theatre in December.

Richard Curtis’s 2003 film, set in London in the frantic lead-up to Christmas, stars a raft of big names, including Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson, and a soundtrack that includes Eva Cassidy’s Songbird, Dido’s Here with Me, and Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, to name a few.

The “Christmas-crazy” Naomi hit upon the idea of producing a cabaret to the soundtrack when she was living in Melbourne and performing in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

“There’s this amazing way music has totally infiltrated our lives so when you hear a song, it will take you back exactly to where you heard it for the first time or to a significant moment.

“I guess as you get older, you hang on to the nostalgia of how you felt when you were younger at Christmas. It’s a time to reconnect with your family, but also a time to do those things that were so special to you when you were younger,” Naomi, 35, says.

She ranks Elf, The Grinch, and the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special as her favourite festive films alongside Love Actually.

“I know Todd had wanted to do a Christmas show for ages so he said, ‘Let’s bring it back next year and make it a tradition’,” Naomi says.

She’s long held a soft spot for the Kelvin Grove-based theatre company, making her professional stage debut in its 2008 season of The Wishing Well.

“What we weren’t ready for was how awesome the Roundhouse Theatre is as a live music venue,” she enthuses.

“When we were there (with Lady Beatle) last year, the whole place turned into this really rocking underground club, with cabaret tables and bottles of wine. We thought we’d be silly not to do it again!”

The performer-turned-producer is joined on stage by Luke, who recently headlined From Johnny to Jack, another Little Red Company production; Tom Oliver, fresh from starring alongside Marcia Hines in disco-cabaret Velvet; and Naomi’s

“It’s a beautiful combination of voices, and they’re each going to sing a song, which is a little different to my usual format.

That’ll be cool because I love doing backing vocals and I’ve really missed doing that.”

A natural on the stage, Naomi has also cemented herself as a savvy producer who aspires to further shape her adopted home’s cultural landscape as artistic leader of a major company.

“I’ve spent the past six years running a very successful small to medium independent company without funding assistance, and I’ve had incredible opportunities to work with brilliant

commercial producers,” she says. “Did you know that out of the 28 major funded companies in Australia, only two of them are led by women?

“My feeling is that if the same kind of person is leading the majority of the companies, we are really seeing bodies of work being programmed from the same point of view. I am certainly looking to bring what I’ve learned over the past 15 years ... to create exciting, provocative and innovative work and inspire a new generation of female leaders,” Naomi says.

She’s hinted at a few creative concepts she’d like to bring to the stage but says her 2019 calendar is filling fast, including the Brisbane Powerhouse’s production of

Sweet Charity, in which she’ll play the titular role made famous by Shirley MacLaine.

“It’s pretty much a dream role for any actress … she’s so central to everything, but more than that, she’s this hopeless romantic and an unlikely hero. And there’s such great music – (Hey) Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now and Rhythm of Life.”

Naomi will also tour Lady Beatle nationally from July to November, before returning to Brisbane for Christmas Actually’s encore season.

This Christmas, she plans to visit her family in the UK with Luke and his daughter, Olivia, 7, so won’t perform at any carols. It will be Naomi’s first time home in more than three years, and Olivia’s first visit.

“We will, quite literally, be acting out the beginning of Love Actually about 24 hours after we finish at La Boite, which will be so amazing – the whole experience of walking in and seeing my family waiting there; everyone cries and kisses and hugs.

“I love how the film starts and ends at Heathrow Airport, (a place that) has been really significant for me. Those beautiful scenes in the arrivals hall; nothing could be truer of my relationship with my family.”

Persian delights Middle-Eastern flavours and spectacular river views merge in a feast for the senses at this Milton venue RESTAURANT Tony Harper The notion of Middle-Eastern food has always seemed to me rather exotic, flying on the same colourful carpet as Sinbad and Aladdin, harems and eunuchs, genies, desert warriors and storytelling princesses – the sort of folk who feasted on honeydrizzled dates, pistachios, saffron, pomegranate, goat’s milk and sweet things sprinkled with rose water.

But reality has, so far, been a little more bland, and unless you count Ben Williamson’s creations at Gerard’s, it’s a genre that, for me, has never quite lived up to expectation.

Momani’s – the most recent resident of that lovely corner terrace where Park Rd and Coronation Drive meet, the one that has hosted a plethora of tenants but most famously housed Harrowers in the late 1980s – cites its inspiration as both MiddleEastern and Mediterranean, but its soul is in the Middle East.

And if I had to cite one attribute upon which it could hang its turban, it would be samak harra – a Lebanese-inspired main of barramundi with a slightly spicy, slightly sweet, beautifully complex sauce ($32). It’s the best thing we ate, and the first MiddleEastern dish (Gerard’s excluded) in decades that has come close to the magiccarpet ride.

The fish is beautifully cooked – moist, flaky – and there is textural complexity, with those flakes, the softness of the sauce, a crumbly blanket (nuts perhaps) and rice.

The setting is really gorgeous and a little old world. During past visits, under the banner of previous restaurants in the same space, it has seemed a little shabby and had the whiff of age. Now it’s bright and fresh, still with the airy, light-filled rooms

There are cloths on the tables, real napkins, padded chairs and – in the oldworld surrounds – it feels nicely decadent.

And there’s a definite slickness and warmth to the service. It has the air of a family affair (which it is), but not in an amateurish sense. There is skill and obvious experience on both sides of the pass, and a sense of people who are emotionally invested in the place.

If samak harra is the best dish, a mixed kebab plate – chicken, lamb and minced beef – is the least good ($45). The slightly dry and overcooked meat is tasty enough, but nowhere near as exotic as the fish.

There’s a splendid starter of falafel ($14) and a plate of dolmades ($12) draped in pomegranate with a yoghurt sauce. Other dishes include kraidis (chargrilled king prawns, $32, inset).

We wash it all down with a couple of

Momani’s stands out for its formal surroundings and food that, at least in Brisbane, isn’t usually so glossily presented. And I like that.

The food has an extra dimension and there is definitely some escapism in tasting dishes that are well outside my radar yet capture a little Middle-Eastern magic.

Ice magic Greg and Lucy Malouf’s rif on a cocktail classic is the very definition of refreshing This very grown-up granita makes a lovely end – or even beginning – to a meal on a hot summer’s day. The addition of gelatine might seem a little strange (and if you are vegetarian, feel free to omit it) but it means you can let the whole thing set solid in the freezer without the frequent beating with a fork that granitas usually require to break up the ice crystals. Instead, you simply use a fork to scrape it into small chilled glasses as you serve. We use goodquality fresh fruit juice from the supermarket for this recipe, which makes it a breeze to prepare.

CLEMENTINE NEGRONI GRANITA INGREDIENTS 400ml clementine juice 100ml blood orange juice 150g caster sugar 1 small gelatine leaf 40ml Campari 40ml sweet vermouth 1tbs gin

METHOD Combine the fruit juices and sugar in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring from time to time until the sugar has dissolved. Once the liquid is clear, bring to the boil then lower the heat and simmer briskly for 1 min.

Take off the heat and leave to cool slightly.

Soak the gelatine in cold water for a few mins until softened. Squeeze out the excess liquid and add the gelatine to the hot juice, stirring to dissolve completely.

Pour through a fine-mesh sieve and leave to cool.

When cold, stir in the alcohol. Pour the mixture into a shallow container and allow to freeze into a solid block.

To serve, scrape the surface with a fork to create a smooth icy slush and pile into small chilled glasses.

Makes about 600ml.

Wynns for winners These winemakers produce top drops that go the distance and can be enjoyed young or old, says Mike Frost For anyone thinking about starting a cellar, there’s one wine that should be top of your shopping list: Wynns Coonawarra Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon.

Not only is it a delicious drink when first released – the 2016 is the current vintage on sale – it has all the ingredients to ensure it has a good cellar life. There’s rich blackcurrant, plum, mint and restrained oak on the nose, and a medium-bodied palate with long, fine tannins and a lovely brightness of fruit. Both history and

experience suggest it has at least a decade – if not two – of cellaring life ahead.

I’ve drunk vintages that are more than 20 years old, and I’ve rarely been disappointed in the wine. Even better, it can be found at Dan Murphy’s for $34.

The 2016 comes from a very good vintage, and the winemaking team of Sue Hodder and Sarah Pidgeon have overseen quite a few top drops from that year.

Recently released are the Black Label Shiraz ($40-$45), White Label Shiraz ($20-$25), the

From the previous, also very good, 2015 vintage come the John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, the Michael Shiraz (both $110$150), and Messenger Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($75-$80). The Riddoch and Michael are definite cellar prospects. I’ve drunk examples of both that were more than 20 years old and enjoyed them immensely.

Take a tumble Acrobats who like a laugh share comic turns and explosive action in spectacular fashion

For Callan Harris, being an acrobat is not just about thrilling the crowd with deathdefying tricks, it’s about making them laugh too.

In fact, the Melbourne-based performer says his company, Head First Acrobats, is so committed to inciting chuckles, it has a resident clown, Rowan Thomas, who will perform in the new show, Elixir, at Brisbane Powerhouse this month.

“Not many acrobatic shows have a full comedy aspect,’’ Callan says. “We often get comments from audience members who say they haven’t laughed like that for years. We are a bit of slapstick – a bit of Buster Keaton and physical theatre. Think of The Three Stooges, if you like that sort of humour.’’

The 50-minute show, which won the best circus and physical theatre award at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival, is about an experiment that goes wrong.

“What makes our show stand out is that it is like a contemporary action film and it’s

got a narrative. We are scientists in a science lab who are creating an elixir of life, then when we drink the elixir, there are all sorts of side effects, such as turning into zombies or performing a Michael Jackson Thriller dance,’’ he says.

“We have some fire, explosions, and a giant seesaw, which we do somersaults on and are balancing on our heads.’’

Callan, 25, says Head First Acrobats has come a long way since he and Thomas Gorham started it as National Institute of Circus Arts students four years ago.

The troupe now tours the world.

“From very small beginnings we have got bigger and better, and now we are on par with the big shows that have massive budgets,’’ he says. “It makes it a little surreal because we never thought the show would travel this far.”

Had he not discovered that circus school was an option, Callan would have “run away with the circus’’.

“I was one of those annoying kids who like people to look at them. I was a class clown. I knew I belonged in the circus from a young age. In my final year of school, I did half days of circus school and half days of normal school,’’ he says.

Callan still pinches himself that he is living his dream. His next goal is for the show to be accepted into London’s famous Underground Festival.

“It’s definitely still so much fun, we get the adrenaline of live performance every single night,’’ he says. “The hardest part of our job is the full-time touring. You miss home and friends, but at the same time, the pay-off is worth it.’’

Phil Brown Dressing up as a prawn is one way to attract attention. And judging by people’s reactions to his work Prawn, artist Gerwyn Davies is doing just that.

Prawn is one in Gerwyn’s rather theatrical suite of photographs featured in the Museum of Brisbane’s exhibition Dress Code. According to museum director Renai Grace, the exhibition was designed to complement the major summer show The Designers’ Guide: Easton Pearson Archive.

It does so by “delving into how contemporary designers and artists are responding to the topics of ethical fashion and cultural identity through adornment”.

“We are delighted to have commissioned new works from Emily McGuire, Hannah Gartside and Grace Lillian Lee, each of which extends the artist’s ongoing investigations of collaboration, consumerism and identity within fashion,” Renai says. “Visitors can expect to see a

Renai says Gerwyn’s series suits the show perfectly and “cannot fail to lift the spirits and curiosity of the viewer”.

Gerwyn, who is originally from Ipswich, is living and studying in Sydney but has been artist in residence at the museum, a residency that finishes this week.

His works present an over-the-top Queensland aesthetic, both critiquing and celebrating aspects of the region’s lifestyle.

OK, Prawn is based on the Big Prawn at Ballina, but QLD is pure Sunshine State.

It features a “tropical despot”, inspired by a former Lord Mayor who went on to become premier. The figure, which is Gerwyn disguised (he is his own main subject), is carrying two pineapples.

In each photographic work, Gerwyn wears an outfit of his own design, and the act of dressing the body is central to his art.

Hannah Gartside’s work Fall/Winter 1986 is a kind of billowing installation featuring found scarves, blouses, necklaces,

shoes and a bag. A fan billows the blouses in a ghostly fashion, and her work uses material culture to express facets of the human condition, such as intimacy, grief and gender expectations. This work hints at emptiness behind a glamorous facade of excess and feminine power, reminiscent of a 1980s fashion shoot.

There’s a great film featuring Cairns artist Grace Lillian Lee’s body adornments, which also hang on walls nearby. Emily McGuire’s embroidered works riff on famous labels, as the titles suggest – Nike, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs & Chanel, for example.

Lisa Hilli’s installation incorporates strings of glass beads referencing the trade beads used as both a form of adornment and a currency between Australian colonialists and the indigenous peoples of Papua New Guinea, Hilli’s homeland.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS (PG) hhkjj Director: Lasse Hallstrom, Joe Johnston Starring: Mackenzie Foy, Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren Disney’s live-action heroines don’t appear to be evolving as fast as their animated counterparts. Alongside Frozen’s heartmelting princesses and Moana’s oceanic adventurer, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ central character feels constrained.

Corsets could well be part of the problem.

But she’s not helped by a derivative storyline that borrows liberally from beloved children’s classics such as The Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland. It’s almost as if the screenwriting is diminishing in inverse proportion to the sophistication of the technology.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ swooping, bird-of-prey perspective opening shot is a heart-stopper. And the costume and production design is just as spectacular, as one would expect from a $180 million Disney Christmas confection.

But in terms of the overall storytelling, the filmmakers do very little with a lot. And the characters – with the exception of Keira Knightley’s scene-stealing Sugar Plum Fairy and Helen Mirren’s spicy Mother Ginger – are about as hollow as the tin soldiers the film’s villain brings to life.

Given the joint directing credit, it’s hard to know where the responsibility lies – Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) oversaw 32 days of reshoots when the original helmsman, Lasse Hallstrom, was unavailable. But it seems likely that the problems originated in the initial concept.

Tchaikovsky’s familiar score and Misty Copeland’s classic dance performances are the closest The Four Realms gets to its source material. The plot – in which the central character follows a mouse into a magical parallel world – feels about as disposable as a mass-produced stocking filler.

When the film opens, Clara (Mackenzie Foy, pictured with Knightley) is about to spend her first Christmas without her

mother (whose death is handled sensitively to protect the very young). Desperate to unlock the silver egg she has been bequeathed, Clara pursues the key-stealing rodent into the Four Realms, where she is persuaded by Knightley’s Sugar Plum Fairy to take on the evil Mother Ginger. At this point, there’s a surprise twist.

WIDOWS (MA15+) hhhhk Director: Steve McQueen Starring: Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez This hard-boiled heist flick doesn’t so much pass the Bechdel test, measuring the representation of women in fiction, as eviscerate it.

While the consequences aren’t pretty, that’s exactly what director Steve McQueen and his powerhouse cast intended.

Alongside Widows, the much-hyped allfemale Ocean’s 8 sequel resembles a glossy fashion shoot.

In his muscular adaptation of Lynda La Plante’s breakthrough ’80s TV series, McQueen (12 Years A Slave, Hunger) transplants the action from Thatcher-era London to contemporary, southside Chicago. Two decades on, and in the wake of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, he and co-writer Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) raise the stakes still higher, rewriting the genre and gender rule books to allow for a hefty emotional wallop.

When their husbands are incinerated in a job gone horribly wrong, Widows’ backagainst-the-wall protagonists rise phoenix-

like from the ashes. Since her bloke is the criminal mastermind of the heist, Veronica Rawlins (Viola Davis) takes most of the initial heat.

Soon after the funeral, Veronica receives an ominous visit from a rival operator to inform her that she has just inherited a $2 million debt.

To prove he means business, crime boss and would-be alderman Jamal Manning

(Brian Tyree Henry) orders the execution of the family driver (Garret Dillahunt).

Manning’s dead-eyed brother-enforcer (Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya) obliges.

All the late Harry Rawlins (Liam Neeson) has left his wife is a heavily mortgaged apartment and the key to a safety deposit box that contains the blueprints for his next job. A confidante warns her to offload that bequest as quickly as she is able, but

characters. The other two realm regents – flowery Hawthorne (Eugenio Derbez) and icicle-crusted Shiver (Richard E. Grant) – are unusually insipid. And the nutcracker (Jayden Fowora-Knight) is reduced to the role of handbag prince.

Contemporary audiences have become accustomed to self-empowerment stories that are a bit more thematically substantial.

Veronica is done doing what other people expect of her, and the former teachers’ union delegate has no intention of becoming yet another victim.

The other widows find themselves in similarly desperate circumstances.

Linda Perelli’s (Michelle Rodriguez) husband has gambled away her retail business – the means by which she provides for her two young children.

Bullied first by her mother (Jacki Weaver) and then by an abusive husband (Jon Bernthal), Alice Gunner (Elizabeth Debicki) is tired of being other’s plaything. It doesn’t take much to tap the steely resolve beneath that previously passive beauty.

Rounding out the novice heist team is Perelli’s babysitter, Belle (Cynthia Erivo), a single mum working two jobs to support the child she never sees.

These four women are up against a crooked and entitled white male political dynasty run by long-time alderman Tom Mulligan (Robert Duvall) and his cynical heir apparent, Jack (Colin Farrell).

Widows invests heavily in its characters.

McQueen even rejects a conventional genre pay-off in favour of a powerful, thoughtprovoking end. Raw, brutal and compelling.

Creative crucible The worst year of her life led Jill Marsden to pursue her passion for jewellery making Kylie Lang When Jill Marsden’s marriage ended, she suffered a double blow, with the death of her beloved father.

The year was 2000 and with two small boys to raise alone, the Ashgrove mum knew she had to be creative. Fortunately, that was easy for her.

The New Zealand-born hairdresser, 54, had always been artistic and says her sons, Matthew and William, now 22 and 20, became her inspiration.

“There was not a lot of light in my life other than my boys, and I just knew that I wanted them to grow up and be as resilient as they possibly could, and the only way I could get them to be resilient was to be resilient myself.

“I needed to stop feeling sorry for myself and knew being creative would help me through.”

Jill began painting – her dramatic art hangs in her home-based hair salon – but it was a trip to Sydney to visit her niece, Greta Rutherford, in 2005 that sealed her path.

“My niece was only about 13 at the time but she got me into jewellery making. She showed me how to do it and then I basically just taught myself.”

In 2008 her beaded creations debuted at the Brisbane Grammar School art show, and two years later, on a trip to Italy, Jill fell in love with silver.

“Italy was amazing, all the handcrafted jewellery in Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, and in Venice – it was all so individual, raw and organic.”

Back home, Jill enrolled in a silversmithing course at the Brisbane Institute of Art in Windsor and completed workshops at Dap Jewellery School in Coorparoo. “I just loved it and really wanted to make more rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, but by then my boys were in high school (at Brisbane Grammar School) and the pace was full-on with extracurricular activities, so I pulled back a bit but kept on hairdressing.”

With both boys now at university, Jill has more time to work at hammering, sculpting and designing statement rings and earrings in both silver and gold.

“I’ve always loved big earrings but found it hard to find ones that were light and easy to wear,” she says.

Now Jill believes it’s never too late to try something new.

“If you’re passionate about something, explore it. Don’t be frightened of it, give it a go.”

form, reviving long-forgotten couture techniques to achieve this.

Here he takes us behind the scenes as he and his team produce his first triumphal collection from a tiny Parisian studio in 1947, on tour to the US as the first French couturier to be awarded a Neiman Marcus Oscar for fashion (his biggest buyers were American women), and through the birth of a collection, from inspiration and design, fittings, choice of models and materials, to showing and sales.

“Colour cannot transform a failure of a dress into a success: it merely plays a supporting role in a cast where the cut is the star performer,” he writes.

Dubbed the original selfie queen, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a woman of boundless creativity who transformed everything she touched – as this book, published for a major British exhibition about her, demonstrates.

Known for her colourful Mexican costumes and piercing self-portraits that reveal her pain from physical disability, she constructed her own persona as if it were a work of art, to become one of Latin America’s most famous artists.

Not only was she a painter of substance, she also wrote poetry, designed her own clothes, and decorated with mirrors and oil paint the corsets that so restricted her.

As well as her paintings, jewellery and prosthetics, this book features photographs of her family and artisthusband Diego Rivera, who ordered that her most private possessions be locked away until 15 years after his death.

For those who are unable to see the exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum before it closes this month, this sumptuous book is the next best thing.

Philosopher, editor and domestic detective Isabel Dalhousie gets herself into a spot of bother in this latest charming addition to Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh series.

Isabel’s curiosity is piqued by the mother of one of her young son’s friends – a tall, Irish viola player whose son resulted from an affair with a church organist.

At least, that’s the gossip, according to Isabel’s handsome musician husband, Jamie, whose cookery skills are among the qualities that make him the perfect man.

Isabel has a lot on her plate. Apart from pondering quandaries as editor of the Review of Applied Ethics, she is often called to help out at her niece Cat’s delicatessen, and she has two young sons and a house to run.

Things get more complicated when she hires help: Antonia, an Italian au pair; and Claire, a beautiful young university student employed to help edit the journal. And then Cat’s leonine boyfriend, Leo, shockingly intervenes in Isabel’s issues in a way she would never have contemplated.

A sleuth story minus the body count.

And despite having relatives who had also survived the Chinese famine, the Cultural Revolution and the fall of Saigon, Alice, now a Melbourne author and lawyer, never felt like a refugee – until her first Australian family holiday as a child, to Slacks Creek.

Her parents decided to holiday in a run-down rental property they had bought in the Logan City suburb.

“But when we arrived in Queensland, I realised that people did not take their holidays in Slacks Creek,” Alice writes. “It (the house) was like a phlegmy sick relative with rotting teeth no one wanted to go near.

“The houses in the Cambodian countryside were built like this,” her father said, “and they kept buffaloes below.”

Alice also writes about growing up in working-class Footscray, the lives of old school friends, and travels to Cambodia and China with her parents. Her book also covers marriage, migration, racism, and the idea of home.

Pacific pearl Relax, feast and have fun in Samoa, where the pace of life is leisurely but never boring, writes Jane Scott

T

he minute I laid eyes on the shimmering pool of depthless beauty that is To Sua Ocean Trench, on the Samoan island of Upolu’s south coast, I knew I was going in.

My head said otherwise (“What? Risk your life descending that rickety wooden ladder? Don’t be ridiculous”), but my heart said, “Yes! Take the plunge. Live in the moment. Prove you’re not over the hill just yet.” So I did.

With crystal-clear seawater that reflects the surrounding emerald-green foliage, To Sua is a sinkhole, formed in a collapsed lava tube that has been inundated by the ocean.

Floating in it, with the Samoan sunshine beating down, was a true pinch-me moment that entirely justified the reckless disregard for my own safety required to get into the hole – and back out again.

It was about the only time during a week-long visit to Samoa that my heart rate rose above resting. That’s unless you count the thrill that comes with encountering site after site of spectacular natural beauty.

Close to To Sua is Lalomanu Beach, generally declared by those who decide such things (read: the internet) to be the country’s most beautiful. It is indeed sublime. Absurdly blue water meets blindingly white sand, while tourists (never too many of them) chill in charming, brightly painted fales (pronounced far-lay).

West of these two attractions you’ll find Savaia village’s Giant Clam Sanctuary.

At first sight, it’s just a very pretty bay.

But swim out to an area marked by buoys, pull on your mask and snorkel, and discover scores of these magnificent molluscs – monumental (approaching 1m in length), beautiful, and just a little bit sinister. I have no idea if they really would clamp shut on fingers and toes that come too close, but I didn’t like to test the theory.

All of this exploring was easily conducted from my base at Saletoga Sands Resort and Spa, a relaxed, friendly, absolute waterfront resort about an hour’s drive from Faleolo International Airport.

Perfect for families (request one of the new family villas if you can – they are immaculate and offer a little extra privacy), Saletoga provides all the creature comforts, along with an authentic sense of Samoan community. The resort has a close relationship with nearby Matatufu village, with staff coming from the ranks of local residents.

When you book, try to include a Wednesday, so as to experience the weekly cultural display and the fiafia night.

For the culture display, guests are invited to join high chief Mata’utia Esila Puni and his team as they prepare the umu for the evening feast. With a fine line in anecdote, the elder oversees the preparation of four suckling pigs, weaves baskets into which vegetables are piled, and prepares palusami – fresh coconut cream and taro leaves tightly wrapped in a snug banana-leaf bundle. Layered with hot rocks and more banana leaves, the umu takes just an hour to cook, after which guests are invited to return to sample the spoils. The taro dipped in hot palusami is sensational.

Live in the moment’ That night, the suckling pigs take centre stage at the buffet, until guests take a seat in preparation for the fiafia, for which Saletoga has won Samoa Tourism’s Best Cultural Entertainment Award for the past two years.

Fiafia means “fun and boy”, and that’s taken literally – there is whooping, clapping, stamping, drumming and a lot of laughter.

Volunteers from the audience are, of course, required. Let’s just say if your other half raises his or her hand, have your camera handy.

Across the mountains on Upolu’s north coast lies Apia, Samoa’s capital, which boasts its own attractions.

Don’t miss Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, an elegant, romantic tribute to the great author, or the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception – the hand-carved wooden interior actually made me gasp out loud, so breathtaking was its beauty.

Tourism Samoa’s Culture Village is also excellent. Free, with twice-daily sessions run by the very charismatic Chris Solomona, it’s an excellent introduction to Samoa, with a clever focus on the way many traditions are still adhered to.

Traditional tataus (full-body tattoos), for example, are still administered without the use of electricity, but the tattooing comb is now made of titanium (as opposed to boar’s tusk) and the ink is imported from the United States.

Coconut cream is still made by massaging freshly grated coconut through a tangle of banana tree fibres, but the coconut is now grated with a metal grater, not a sharp shell, as in days gone by.

After all this culture you’ll be ready for a bit of laid-back Samoan luxury, and you’ll find it at Taumeasina Island Resort, a relatively new hotel peacefully situated on a small atoll on the outskirts of Apia.

Accessible by a short causeway, Taumeasina is handy to the Samoan capital’s attractions, yet removed enough to offer that island vibe.

Smart white townhouse-style rooms and suites are stylishly furnished, and they all offer water views – some across the open ocean, others over a peaceful bay to Upolu’s

mountainous interior. For families, twoand three-bedroom villas adjacent to a protected cove offer enough room to spread out and relax.

All of the action at Taumeasina takes place in the spacious main building, with its dramatic, fale-style foyer and impressive infinity pool.

With two bars, three restaurants, water sports, a spa and fitness centre, a private beach and gorgeously situated wedding chapel, the resort feels intimate, but it has plenty to offer.

The go-to location for the region’s bigwigs – both Malcolm Turnbull and Julie Bishop attended Pacific Islands leaders’ conferences there – Taumeasina is a fussfree choice for the high-end traveller.

Divine destiny A much-admired historic rectory gives an expat family a happy welcome home, writes Michelle Bailey

W

hen Tom and Sue McDonald were living overseas in 2001 and looking for a foothold in Brisbane, they chanced upon a historic home for sale in Coorparoo.

Sue recognised it immediately. “It was the rectory for the Anglican Church (across the street) where my parents met,” she says.

“I had loved the house since I was a little girl. I always thought she was a wonderful old house in this beautiful secret garden.”

The couple went ahead with the purchase, but it was another 15 years before they and their two daughters returned to settle in Brisbane permanently.

With the hope of tailoring the home to better suit their maturing family dynamic, they embarked on a renovation.

“I called (architect) Shaye (Mclean) and she knew the house straight away,” Sue says. “When she came to visit for the first time, Shaye had already researched the history of the house, so we knew she was the right architect for us.”

It turns out the historic building was a place Shaye had also coveted. “The rectory was always a building that I was curious about,” she says. “It always had a beautiful facade that sits wonderfully within the streetscape – a rather grand old dame.”

Shaye, Tom and Sue shared the same vision. “We wanted to make new works fit sympathetically below the original roof,” Shaye says. “It was important that we created more usable spaces that didn’t extend beyond the original envelope.”

New kitchen and living areas were installed in non-character rooms at the back of the house, ensuring the historic rooms at the front were preserved.

“The original home was dark and showing signs of wear and tear,” Shaye says.

“We wanted to lighten these dark spaces.”

Historic rooms were transformed rather simply with larger doorways, to allow them to connect better visually to neighbouring spaces. Timber doors were salvaged and reused to make new doorways to the outdoor terrace.

The historic dining, lounge and breakfast rooms were refurbished by removing carpets, polishing floorboards and painting walls. Light fittings collected by Tom and Sue during their decades overseas were brought out of storage and fitted.

But the big architectural moves were reserved for the contemporary kitchen,

I had loved the house since I was a little girl … she was a wonderful old house in this beautiful secret garden dining and living room, where an open-plan arrangement was designed to improve visual connections to the garden and pool.

A deck was built drawing on traditional construction techniques and the contemporary aesthetic inside. Finally, new balustrades on the staircase allow light from a skylight to flood the living room – the heart of the character-filled family home.

“We always felt the house didn’t connect to the garden as well as it could, instead it looked inward,” Sue says.

“We wanted to give her that feeling of openness and looking out. And we are so glad we have done that.”

Phil Brown As a city slicker, I don’t feel the need to commune with nature, not when I have the National Geographic Channel at hand Now don’t get me wrong, I like nature, but I prefer to enjoy it from a distance.

We were discussing this at dinner recently with friends who were amazed that I had never been to Fraser Island.

“I’ve seen it on television though,” I replied. I have sailed off Fraser Island on a whale-watching cruise out of Hervey Bay (God’s waiting room), so I have been close to Fraser Island, but I have never actually landed there.

I have not visited many of our region’s beauty spots, although I do appreciate them – from afar. I have some landscapes by the great Brisbane artist William Robinson, if that counts.

Meditating on a Robinson is as good as being there I reckon.

As a city slicker, I don’t feel the need to commune with nature, not when I have National Geographic Channel at hand. In the privacy of my own home I have visited some of the most remote, spectacular spots on the planet.

And it’s not as if I’ve always

eschewed getting up close and personal with the natural world.

When we moved home to Australia from Hong Kong, we lived on the Nerang River, not far from the Surfers Paradise Golf Club, and in those days, that was virtually the country.

I fell in love with the local landscape, and in my canoe I used to explore the local creeks and wander through the gorgeous heathland and pastures with a copy of What Bird Is That? by Neville W. Cayley in my rucksack. I was a keen birdwatcher in those days and that was my bible.

I would fish the waterways around there and was a real nature boy. And of course my fishing and surfing also brought me in close contact with the natural world. I would spend my evenings fishing for bream in front of our house, and on many mornings, would awaken before dawn and ride my bike through the countryside to the beach.

So I’ve had my fill really.

Now I prefer to enjoy nature from afar, or to glimpse it through the windows of a luxury hotel room.

Last year we stayed at the Byron at Byron Resort & Spa, which is perfect.

It’s set in a gorgeous little rainforest by the beach, and the rooms look out onto it. We did go for a walk through that rainforest, and we glimpsed a wallaby, which was lovely.

I prefer, however, to spend most of my time within the city limits being an urban creature. And Brisbane has lots of lovely parks, gardens and bushland within those city limits to satisfy any urge to commune with nature.

I’m reminded of an episode of The Goon Show ... and I have to paraphrase here … in which a view was being admired. “Look at those lovely mountains out there,” one character says to another, who replied, “Yes, but I never let them in the house.”
