Alastair McLeod on the art of the creme brulee
This week... I had a quiet chuckle at Tony Harper’s restaurant review this week. Our long-time correspondent, on assignment in Fortitude Valley, found himself among the hip young things at Za Za Ta – the new Med-meets-Middle East venue at Ovolo The Valley. The stylish space, with its uber cool waitstaff and in-house DJ, had the food critic feeling his age, but he managed to find a silver lining in the menu. Check out Tony’s glowing review on P12. Our other resident foodie, chef Alastair McLeod, serves up a decadent rhubarb and strawberry creme brulee (P13) this week. He first made the French classic as a young chef and, several years and versions later, returns to that original recipe. Lucky for us, he is happy to share it.

LIFE
Alicia Pyke If Nan were here, I’d drop over with piping hot fish and chips – her favourite. She’d insist on plates, I’d suggest it’s fun to eat off the paper October is a strange time for me. It’s the month Guy and I celebrate our wedding anniversary – this will be our sixth, hurrah! – so there’s lots to be happy about. It’s also the month I associate most with my dear nan. Born in October 1918, Nanny Pyke would be 101 this year if she were still with us. But she’s not. Nanny died in October 2002 and each year I miss her more. The dates that bookend her life tinge the entire month with melancholy, even though Nan would never tolerate such selfindulgence. Stern, sweet, stoic, she would
tell me not to be sad, to pull myself together. Because she said things like that and despite her endless love, she had little time for tears. Unlike many 40-somethings, I had the privilege of knowing my nan closely for 26 years. Our worlds couldn’t have been more different: she lived in London during WWII, emigrated to Australia with her husband in 1950 and raised a family of five children. Later, she gave up her life in Townsville among treasured family and friends to move to Brisbane to help raise my sister Tanya and me. As an adult, I’m embarrassed at the
infinite love, care and kindness Nanny showed me. Growing up, I was a brat. But as I started to make my own way in the world, I realised how lucky a brat I’d been. Not only did I know the love of my mum and dad – yes, children of divorced parents can feel loved by both – I’d been lucky enough to be loved by a grandparent as well. The last few years of Nanny’s life we grew closer as I tried to thank her for all she’d done. Now it turns out October is the month we celebrate Grandparents Day in Australia. So on Sunday, October 27,
encourage the people around you to do something special for their grandparents – especially if that grandparent is you! Tell your family you’d like to be together that day or how much you’d appreciate a card or call; family life can be hard so you might as well grab the goodness whenever you can. If Nan were here, I’d drop over with piping hot fish and chips – her favourite. She’d insist on plates, I’d suggest it’s fun to eat off the paper. We’d compromise with forks but we’d always agree on a sprinkle of vinegar.

hen Princess Jasmine hits the high notes in Disney’s animated classic Aladdin, it is actually the voice of Lea Salonga that little (and big) fans are hearing. Fittingly, the Tony and Olivier awardwinning singer will perform Disney classics from Aladdin, Frozen and more when she takes the stage at QPAC’s Concert Hall at South Bank next month. “I’m doing some musical theatre standards and some big songs from film and Disney,” she says. “I’ll be nervous, but I always am because I know what can go wrong with a live performance. “Sometimes there has been a technical problem or a wardrobe malfunction. I just deal with it the best I can.” The West End and Broadway theatre veteran, who is stopping off in Brisbane as part of her Australian east coast tour, will be joined on stage by Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, Camerata. The live shows represent a break from the Manila-born singer’s role as a coach on TV shows the The Voice and The Voice Kids in the Philippines. Lea, 48, says she enjoys passing on the lessons from her 40-year career in showbiz. “To make it in musical theatre you have to be genuinely talented but also have a wonderful personality to support that,” she says. “People need emotional intelligence and be ready for a lot of hard work.” Known for her powerful voice and perfect pitch, Lea first won acclaim playing the lead role of Kim in the original Miss
Saigon on the West End (1989) and Broadway (1991). She went on to play Eponine and Fantine in Les Miserables before landing the singing roles for Disney’s Aladdin and Mulan animated films. And did we mention she has sold 19 million albums worldwide? The in-demand singer, who also keeps busy with corporate gigs, swears by some pre-performance rituals. “I say a little prayer in my head before I get on stage. I also have a coffee or tea before the soundcheck or I suck on a glycerine lozenge,” she says. “These things all help to lubricate my vocal cords. If my throat is supple it’s more responsive to what I want it to do.” Indeed she would rather warm up properly than use autotune on stage – something that latter-day singing stars might be guilty of. “I’m old school,” she says. “I’m from the generation when autotune didn’t exist and it bothers me that some people use it today when they sing live. “Admittedly I’ve used autotune for some of my recordings but I think when it’s a live performance you should be able to represent yourself without it. “I think to myself are they really that lazy that they have to depend on it? (Without) it is far more impressive and appreciated by an audience.” Lea Salonga In Concert, Nov 9, Concert Hall, QPAC, from $99. qpac.com.au

tuart Bywater lives for Fridays when he can pull on a wetsuit before his work boots. “I’m up at 4am, pick up a few mates, in the surf by 6am, and at work by 10am,” he says, during a well-earned break at his Boondall furniture design and restoration workshop. It is here at Bywater Design – with sawdust underfoot and the fresh aroma of timber in the air – that he makes the lightweight, wooden surfboards that float his Friday bliss. His mates all ride his handiwork too, but the gently spoken and modest master craftsman likely wouldn’t have told me if I hadn’t asked. “I absolutely get a kick out of that,” he grins. “I always drop into work and fill up the van with a bunch of boards I’ve made before we head out.” They’re usually headed for the breaks at Alexandra Headland or Burleigh, both an hour’s drive north or south of his workshop. The handmade surfboards (and surfing) are the 52-year-old’s passion project, which follows a lifetime of house building, furniture making and heritage restorations. Stuart and his wife Daniele, 50, launched Bywater Design 25 years ago but Stuart has been working with wood since graduating in 1986 from the Australian National University with a degree in furniture design. He and Daniele moved to Brisbane and married in 1992. They now live at Nundah. Somewhat surprisingly, Stuart did not initially plan on
being a carpenter. He had a different creative pursuit in mind. “My father is a carpenter, so maybe that’s where I get my love of hands-on from, but I had a stronger love for art than woodwork early on,” he says of growing up in Canberra. It was in his younger days, about the age of 13, that he discovered surfing. “But I very much wanted to be a famous artist and it was Mum who was always interested in art and art history.” It figures then that much of his
woodwork can easily be described as art. Stuart spends most of his time in the Bywater Design workshop designing and making beautiful, handcrafted timber pieces or teaching small groups how to make their own. His surfboard-making classes launched in 2011 and have been making waves ever since. They’re often booked out months in advance, filled by retirees, surgeons, carpenters, nurses and, of course, surfers. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

“People come because they either want the board as art, or to surf it,” Stuart says. “They’re aged anywhere from 30 to 72. The 72 year-old, he surfs his board. He hadn’t surfed since the late ’60s, but since making his own board he’s started driving up and down the coast, surfing again.” Teaching has become another of Stuart’s passions. “I love it. Being able to pass on skills and knowledge is important,” he says. “Otherwise those skills are lost. It’s the same with my furniture making classes. I’m teaching people how to make coffee tables, chairs, boxes with their hands. They’re creating heirlooms. “It’s about creating something that will last a lifetime, not two seasons.” Daniele manages the office and the on-site showroom, which opened earlier this year. “We always had a vision to have something to display – you can only say so much in words and photos – so we moved here so we could have a space where people could look at and smell the timbers,” she says. She took a step back from the business when their daughters Maddison, 25, and Eden, 22, arrived, but made her comeback when Bywater Design won one of its biggest tenders – restoring Brisbane City Hall’s heritage furniture. City Hall was closed at the end of 2009 so it could undergo critical restoration work before reopening in 2013. Bywater
MADE TO LAST ... Stuart and Daniele Bywater in their showroom; Stuart assists a student during a surfboard workshop. Pictures: Russell Shakespeare/ AAP, Rachael Honner Design won the tender to restore more than 250 pieces of furniture in a time frame of six months, so it was all hands on deck. “We did every chair, desk, even the Lord Mayor’s desk,” Stuart says. “It was a mammoth job doing everything from replacing leather on tables and upholstery on chairs.” It was a job that perfectly aligned with Stuart’s values. He says he is often frustrated by today’s “throwaway” culture and mass produced furniture lacking in quality and craftsmanship. “We create
timeless pieces for our clients,” he says. “No two pieces that come out of our workshop are the same. Every piece is made in our workshop here in Brisbane. “We don’t mass produce anything and we use solid timber and recycled or upcycled pieces wherever we can. We’re not about making fashion furniture; we’re making classics.” It is this commitment to sustainability that ultimately led him to craft his first wooden surfboard, too. “They’re extremely environmentally
9 in10
sound,” he says. “We don’t use any foam, they’re hollow, and I spent about eight years doing research and development to create a light board.” He says the surfing world sees wooden boards as “a bit of a gimmick”, but he won’t ride anything else. “The timber boards are a little stiffer, stronger, more beautiful,” he says. “They’re works of art.” Classic Wooden Surfboard classes, Nov 14-17, from $1700 depending on board size, Bywater Design, Boondall. bywaterdesign.com.au

GOING OUT
One for the ages Jessica Tovey plays a spirited sibling in a new adaptation of a Greek tragedy As far as career challenges go, taking on the title role in Sophocles’ Antigone is certainly up there. But former Home and Away actor Jessica Tovey can’t wait to take the stage in Queensland Theatre’s lyrical adaptation of the Greek tragedy, and aims to do it justice. “It’s such a famous role (which has been) performed by so many people so there is a bit of pressure on me,” she says. “The language is so traditional that I’m trying to wrap my head around how to perform it.” Jessica says her objective has been to stay true to the text while finding a way to communicate the meaning to modern audiences. “I’ve been thinking about if I was 15 years old seeing it for the first time and asking myself how I can do this so it makes sense to them.” Written in 441BC, the play begins with two brothers lying dead in the aftermath of a civil war. One is hailed a
hero and lying in state while the other is condemned as a traitor and dumped in a carrion pile. From the ashes of their conflict rises a dystopian state under a new leader – in this version, a career politician who rose to power by dint of her ruthlessness. Grieving and heartbroken, their sister Antigone challenges the leader (played by Christen O’Leary) for the right to bury and mourn her dead brother with dignity, sparking a furious act of rebellion that shakes the city to its foundations. It’s a far cry from Jessica’s days playing Belle Taylor in Home And Away. The talented actor was a soap favourite between 2006 and 2009 and credits the show with giving her a start in the industry. “It was my first acting role out of high school when I was 17 and I don’t think I really understood what I was getting myself into,” she says. “I would often do 14 to 16-hour days
so I had to be really disciplined, but it was incredible to have such amazing professional training at such a young age.” Jessica, 31, who grew up in Sydney and attended a performing arts high school, was last on stage in Brisbane when she starred in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at QPAC in 2018. When Antigone closes, she is hoping to try her luck in Los Angeles. “The terrible and wonderful part of acting is not knowing what you’re doing next one day, and then getting one call and having a job lined up. “The Hollywood lifestyle doesn’t really appeal to me, but there is a lot of incredible work happening over there at the moment and I’m curious to see if there’s a place for me.” HANNAH DAVIES Antigone, Oct 26-Nov 16, from $35, Bille Brown Theatre, Queensland Theatre, South Brisbane. queenslandtheatre.com.au

FOOD + DRINK
Let’s get loud Tantalise all your senses on this culinary safari born in the Middle East
JUNGLE BEAT ... Za Za Ta boasts an in-house DJ, glam decor and exotic fare.
RESTAURANT Tony Harper Za Za Ta – the Middle East meets Fortitude Valley. Sounds like an adventure hey? And it is – in a loud, exceedingly entertaining way. Out of the waitstaff and myself, I’m the least stylish by far – the staff garb ranging from the sort of suits you retire when you hit 30 or gain an inch of belly fat, through to more exotic looks, and simple black and whites. I assume there’s a hierarchical plan that decides who wears what. And despite the fact the DJ (yes, a DJ) plays familiar tunes, it’s loud. Way too loud. I’m getting old, but I am not deaf. That said, Za Za Ta is slick. Things roll out in a rehearsed, effortless manner. I have a peek at the wine list (it’s good!) and moments later the sommelier is at my side offering help. The menu gets decoded (it needs some decoding) and the food leaves the pass at just the right pace. And our resident coeliac gets pampered. With only a couple of exceptions, there’s a divide between my mental picture of the dishes based on the menu description, and what arrives. That’s not a complaint – my grasp of Middle Eastern food is flimsy at best and, besides, I like culinary surprises. Mejadra duck bites ($17) surprise me. I have in my head little fried balls, but there are four onion hearts sticking up like totems in a puddle of something silky and yellow with the mejadra in the middle. On another dish there’s a giant tentacle belonging to a Fremantle octopus that comes with a quenelle of camel-nduja, pureed eggplant and salted walnuts ($29, right). It’s very good, but hard to manage as a share dish because of the uncut hunk
of seafood. It’s a simple fix. Everything else, however, makes for easy picking. Goats cheese pretzel is paired with lamb pastrami and a blob of aioli ($15); whipped hummus and abalone mushrooms ($22) has an option of grated foie gras – for an extra $8 how could you not? – and soft pita rolls to the side. It all makes for a theatrical dining experience, with the food – deliciously quirky – almost a bonus. But we encounter a sting in the tail – a 10 per cent surcharge for tables of eight or more on top of the 1.25 per cent credit card surcharge. We whinge, it gets removed and everyone is happy. Next time I’ll book adjoining tables of four.

Berry divine Classic creme brulee is poetry in motion in the capable hands of Alastair McLeod
T
o paraphrase Irish poet Oscar Wilde, “experience is of no value. It’s merely the name we give to our mistakes”. I have made square-shaped creme brulee that stand freely on a plate. I have infused them with Jerusalem artichoke, truffle, blue cheese and other things a Francophile would consider anathema. Here I return to a classic I learnt decades ago, back when I was inexperienced. To be sure.
RHUBARB AND STRAWBERRY CREME BRULEE Ingredients 250g rhubarb, cut into 3cm lengths 250g strawberries, hulled and halved if large 4 tbs brown sugar 1 tbs orange zest 5 egg yolks 110g caster sugar + 2 tbs extra 440ml pure cream 1 tsp vanilla paste Method Preheat oven to 160C. Place rhubarb and strawberries in a small pot with brown sugar and zest and cook over a medium heat until tender. Tip on to a tray to cool then chill until
required. Next whisk egg yolks and caster sugar until creamy, heat the cream until just below boil then add to egg mix with vanilla. Strain into a clean bowl. Divide fruit between dishes and gently pour over the custard to cover. Set into a deep-sided roasting tray and pour hot water half way up the sides of the dishes. Loosely cover tray with foil and bake for 30 minutes, or until the custard barely wobbles. Remove from tray and place in fridge for at least four hours. When ready to serve, sprinkle with extra sugar and caramelise with a blow torch, or under a hot grill. Writing’s on the wall A retrospective of powerful works by the late artist Gordon Bennett challenges views of history and national identity Phil Brown
S
the crowd .... “I am not an animal! I am a human being!” That’s a kind of cri de coeur against racism and bigotry too, I think. The works in this show were made between 1988 and 2014 and they are powerful, bold and humane. Bennett’s art challenged racial stereotypes and provoked critical reflection on Australia’s
official history and national identity. He burst on to the national scene in 1991 when his painting The Nine Ricochets (fall down black fella, jump up white fella) won the prestigious Moet & Chandon Australian Art fellowship. The painting was a comment on white artists appropriating indigenous art and was regarded as a groundbreaking work.
While he critiqued postcolonial Australia in the strongest possible way, Bennett eschewed the limelight, rarely gave interviews and staunchly refused to identify as solely Aboriginal. “I didn’t go to art college to graduate as an Aboriginal artist,” he once said. But he did identify with the Aboriginal struggle. Bennett’s mother was indigenous

ometimes the meaning is encapsulated in the title of a work of art. Which is why I’m never happy to see a gallery full of works bearing the label Untitled. I like a title and was immediately drawn to one in particular in the impressive show of work by the late Gordon Bennett now on at Milani Gallery. Bennett died suddenly and tragically in 2014, a great loss to his family and to the art world. He was a fiercely intelligent and provocative artist who straddled two worlds on account of his Aboriginal and European ancestry. In the current show, entitled Bloodlines, there’s a wonderful mixed media work on paper (part of a suite) entitled Elephant Man. It features some gritty, illuminating text with a sting in the tale. Bennett describes an ordinary suburban house and then finishes with ... “you wouldn’t think a f---ing coon lived there at all”. The title adds to the commentary because if you know the film The Elephant Man you will know the famous line when the deformed Joseph “John” Merrick (played brilliantly by John Hurt) shouts at
pieces such as the 1993 three-panelled work Bloodlines, a painting with red rope signifying blood dripping from it. His Reprisal suite is a commentary on colonisation and there’s a video on display upstairs which is quite entertaining featuring the artist, masked, dancing to a 1993 hip hop song by Ice-T. Gallery director Josh Milani says
Bennett was an international figure and at the time of his death his work was being seen at the Berlin Biennale. “He was one of the most brilliant minds in Australian art,” Milani says. Gordon Bennett: Bloodlines, until Oct 26, Milani Gallery, 270 Montague Rd, West End. milanigallery.com.au

HUSTLERS (MA15+) hhjjj Director Lorene Scafaria Starring Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart J.Lo hustles like a pro in this glossy account of the rise and fall of a high-class escort. But it’s moviegoers who turn out to be the unsuspecting mark. It’s easy to buy the 50-year-old actor as a hard-headed opportunist who employs her feminine super-wiles to relieve an army of Wall Street bankers of a good portion of their ill-gotten gains. And she clearly put a lot of work into the steamy pole dancing routine – there’s a YouTube video to prove it. The knee hook, tabletop, Peter Pan and martini should NOT be attempted without supervision. As a seasoned stage performer, J.Lo also knows exactly how to rock a skimpy showgirl costume. All of which goes some way to explaining the Oscar buzz surrounding the actor-singer-dancer’s star turn in this all-woman crime dramedy based on real events. But there’s something deeply dishonest about Hustlers’ cynical spin on the Robin Hood myth, in which a bunch of strippers drug their wealthy clients in order to fleece them of large amounts of cash. It’s alluded to in the film’s one-line synopsis, which describes the women as turning “the tables on their Wall Street clients.” There seems to be an underlying assumption, here, that these men deserve the treatment they are subjected to – partly because they frequent strip clubs in the first place, and partly because of their capitalist cowboy profession. Just as troublesome is the corresponding suggestion that the straightforward business relationship between stripper and client is illegitimate, or that the women
NAKED AMBITION ... Hustlers, with Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez, fails to deliver on its Robin Hood, or feminist, premise. themselves are victims. This directly contradicts Hustlers’ opening scenes at Moves, a club in downtown Manhattan, where a stripper named Destiny (Constance Wu) – a green but selfdetermining employee – is struggling to make an impression. Mesmerised, like the rest of the crowd, by Ramona’s (Lopez) showstopping poledance, she asks the club’s star performer for a few tips. The pair quickly become firm
friends and private performance partners – cinematographer Todd Banhazi shot these erotic sequences against a warm, low-lit backdrop – and the money starts rolling in. But when the sex industry becomes one of the immediate casualties of the 2008 financial crisis, the women must improvise in order to make ends meet. Hustlers is an impressive showcase for J.Lo and a bunch of fresh new talent. But it’s hard to shake the feeling that the
STRANGE BUT TRUE (M) hhkjj Director Rowan Athale Starring Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, Greg Kinnear, Amy Ryan Amy Ryan is mistress of the grudge. A decade after her Oscar-nominated performance as a hardened welfare mum in Ben Affleck’s 2007 directorial debut Gone Baby Gone, the actor returns to that angry place. Only this time she’s playing a middleclass librarian unable to come to terms with the death of her college-aged son. Ryan articulates the bitterness of her character’s grief with cool precision in Strange But True, a soapie suburban thriller based on John Searles’ book of the same name. It’s a pity the film itself is so muddled. Director Rowan Athale can’t seem to decide whether he wants to make a schlocky B-movie or something darker and more ambiguous. Even a stellar cast can’t provide the necessary illumination. When her late son’s former girlfriend, Melissa (Qualley), turns 16 BRISBANE NEWS October 16-22, 2019

Especially after Melissa insists that the unborn child must be Ronnie’s (Connor Jessup), since that’s the only man she has ever slept with. While Charlene researches cryogenically frozen sperm and virgin births, her troubled surviving son, Phillip
(Love, Simon’s Nick Robinson), who has returned home to recuperate following a motor vehicle accident, takes a more conciliatory route. He visits Melissa’s former classmates as well as her medium in an effort to understand. Greg Kinnear has a “steadying” role as Phillip and Ronnie’s father, Richard. He has quite literally moved on from his son’s
actors, like their characters, are simply playing dress-ups. A good example is the early rooftop scene in which Ramona, who is enjoying a post-performance cigarette, invites the scantily clad Destiny to curl up between her legs, wrapping them both in her enormous fur coat. This isn’t an exchange between two characters, but a scene played out entirely for the camera, and one that is keenly aware of its own sex appeal.
death by relocating to another town and another wife. Shaking off the fortune teller’s warning of impending danger, Phillip visits the rural cottage Melissa is renting from her sweet, supportive “adoptive parents” (Blythe Danner and Brian Cox) in a bid to heal at least some of their wounds. Whereupon the plot takes a jarring, vertebrae-crunching twist from which it never really recovers. While the information that comes to light in this climactic reveal offers a much more plausible explanation for Melissa’s current state of fertility, its delivery is handled in an extraordinarily rushed and clumsy manner. As a result, Strange But True’s secular explanation for the events that have occurred isn’t any more convincing than its supernatural counterpart. Compounding the film’s problems is the fudged resolution – the filmmakers appear to have confused “hauntingly open-ended” with impaling themselves on the fence. An atmospheric thriller with “noirish” undertones that fails to deliver. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

’ve got nothing to wear.” We’ve all been guilty of moaning the phrase while rifling through an overflowing wardrobe, but the story of Brisbane mum Charlotte Coory and her late, beloved sister will make you think twice before uttering the untruth again. Charlotte is the mastermind behind online store Hello Yello which stocks stylish clothes for people – like her sister – who have an illness or disability that really does limit their wardrobe options. “The store was really inspired by my
sister,” says Charlotte, 47, a family lawyer who is taking a break to grow Hello Yello and raise three daughters. She asks Brisbane News to please keep her sister’s name private. “She lived a full life with a very rare form of cancer for nearly 20 years, but then it became aggressive and she was given a very short time to live,” Charlotte confides. “Nearing the end of her life, she had IV tubes and pain medication in her arm and a tube that came out of her stomach and

all she wanted was a nice pair of pyjamas that she could wear in bed if people came to visit.” Charlotte, of Paddington, couldn’t find a single pair. “Sure, my sister had a rare condition. We could understand why it was difficult to find clothing for her, but we couldn’t understand why there was such a lack of options for people from larger groups – people who use a wheelchair, those with PICCS (a peripherally inserted central catheter) and ports, and people with
V1 - BNSE01Z01MA
dexterity issues who find buttons and zippers difficult,” Charlotte says. So after her sister died at the age of 47 in 2017, Charlotte got busy. She scoured the internet for inclusive clothing manufacturers and started stocking their ranges in her online “one-stop-shop”. “I began to realise that people were making these sort of clothes … but they were dotted all over the world. A lot of them didn’t ship to Australia, and if they did, the shipping was far too expensive if you only wanted one item.”
With as many manufacturers on board as she could find, Charlotte launched Hello Yello in 2018 with a range of stylish and inclusive clothes for men, women and babies. It sells established brands such as MagnaReady, which designs clothes with magnetic closures for people with dexterity issues. There’s also womenswear from The Able Label, an English brand that uses discreet adaptive designs and innovative fastenings but doesn’t put function above fashion – a particular
bugbear of Charlotte’s. There are hidden pockets in stylish skirts to hold catheter bags and special linings that allow medical tubes to be pulled through. Hello Yello’s stock of specialised baby rompers is life changing for parents of sick children. “They’re designed with extra fastenings to give doctors full medical access without the need to fully undress the baby all the time,” Charlotte says. “If your child is in a neonatal intensive care unit, you can’t do a lot of those ordinary parenting things like feeding. To be able to give parents back something, like dressing their own child, is really valuable.” Charlotte’s dream is to grow her range and eventually cater to all ages. In October, she will showcase her range at FashionABLE, a runway event of inclusive fashion worn by models of all abilities. “The part I get the most satisfaction from is the contact with people who buy from me,” she says. “I’ve had first-hand experience so I know what a difference these clothes can make.” FashionABLE, Oct 26, Mercure Hotel, 85-87 North Quay, city. fashionable2019.org.au; helloyelloclothing.com.au

here really is nothing like a sunwarmed strawberry, all sweet and juicy, plucked straight from the plant and eaten on the spot. May to October is prime picking time at Cooloola Berries Strawberry Farm and Cafe at Wolvi, near Gympie, where owners Jason and Kim Lewis welcome droves of visitors to pick their own punnets. “Our only rule we have when picking is you have to eat – we encourage people to taste the fruit,” Jason says, pointing out the rows of sweet Ruby Gems destined to go in sauces at Brisbane’s Blackbird Bar & Grill. The farm and cafe is open daily, all year round, and we arrive on a glorious Sunday morning for the Farmer’s Table Breakfast, all made from locally sourced produce. Gympie. And of course, the pancakes come with Cooloola Berries’ own strawberry jam. As well as jams and toppings, Jason and Kim produce strawberry and blueberry lemonades and ciders, lavender iced tea, and freeze-dried strawberries – all available in the farm shop. The breakfast buffet is abundant, so it’s a good thing we can walk it all off on a farm tour with a side of berry picking. “Our hashtag is #tastesunshine because that’s what you’re tasting. It’s the same as when you eat a cherry tomato from the garden – it’s ripe fruit,” Kim says, on a quick break from kitchen duties. “And we have good varieties: Ruby Gems, Festival, Camarosa, San Andreas. We sell direct and we give people a true food experience. They come to a working farm and they are tasting all those flavours and textures.” From our weekend rental, Thirlestane Farm Cottage (more on that later) at Cooroy, Cooloola Berries is a 50-minute drive through rainforest and paddocks
dotted with Droughtmaster cattle. It’s a lovely drive in the countryside. From Brisbane, you are looking at a two-hour run to the berry farm, and many turn a visit into a day out, starting with the farmer’s breakfast, followed by a spot of strawberry picking, and then sitting down to Jason’s famous paella, washed down with a chilled strawberry cider. What could be better? It’s a real family affair, with Jason’s father Gary working on the farm, his mother Kay in the strawberry shed, weighing punnets ($12/kg) picked by the visitors, his Uncle Steve behind the bar, and Aunty Claire in the kitchen. “They have all finished their working lives and come and help us on weekends, which is lovely,” says Jason, who grew up on a strawberry farm at Gatton in the Lockyer Valley. “There is a history of farming in the family and we are the only ones left doing it.” The on-site cafe feeds 200-300 guests on any given Sunday. Today the hordes,
young and old, are basking in the sunshine and bucolic setting. “We are not fancy,” Jason says. “We like to feed people and we want to make people happy. When people come through the gate, they are coming to our home and we think of them as our friends.” The couple has also reached out to nearby farmers to create the Cooloola Farm Trail, on the first weekend in May and September, which offers guests an exclusive look behind the scenes at working farms in the Gympie region. “We are working with local farmers all within cooee, a five-minute drive of one another, so you can go to a coffee plantation, an alpaca farm, lemon myrtle, macadamia nuts and many more,” Kim says. “We are now trying to market as the ‘great beach drive’ from Caloundra up to Hervey Bay, and so it gives people a nice stopping point if they want to stay overnight and do a few things in the area.” And there is much to do in this neck of the woods. The handsome brick structure was built in 1930 but spiralling production costs and a decline in the dairy industry forced its closure in 1975. In 2005 it became an arts centre for local and touring exhibitions, and we catch Joy of the Journey – an exhibition by five artists, and enjoy a quick browse in the gift shop, filled with creations by local artisans. After dark, we join the throng at Copperhead Restaurant Brewery in Cooroy, a small batch brewery with a cool, New York loft-style vibe. Here, you can opt for a burger at the bar or sit down to an a la carte extravaganza. Being a family group, we opt for a table and cannot fault the eye fillet with potato rosti, green beans and almonds, and the seared scallops with crisp pork belly and miso mayo. Just yum. While our excursions are fun-filled, we find it almost impossible to leave the gorgeousness of our weekender. From its rustic front gate and cows grazing in the
paddocks to its interiors straight from the pages of a decorating magazine, Thirlestane Farm Cottage is the quintessential country getaway. Set on almost 10 hectares of rolling hills, close to Cooroy and 20 minutes from Noosa beaches, this two-bedroom beauty has comfy beds dressed in the finest linens, a kitchen befitting a TV MasterChef, cosy living room with wood-burning stove, plus an outdoor entertaining area with film projector, should you prefer a big screen on movie night. There is a fire pit in the carport, on which my children toast many, many marshmallows, and an outdoor version encircled by stylish Adirondack chairs. No detail has been overlooked in the renovation and decoration of this charming retreat – clearly a labour of love for the owners, Tee and Stephen Tait of Brisbane. There are board games and shelves groaning with reads by Bill Bryson, Toby Young and Peter FitzSimons, to name but a few. Homey touches abound,
from the basket of rugs for TV viewing to the cow hides in the sun room that I love so much I stop at Glenview’s Skin Thing on the way home to buy one for myself. Originally from Scotland, the Taits arrived in Australia in 2004 and quickly fell for the Sunshine Coast region. “We used to have a B&B in Scotland in Perthshire countryside and the Noosa hinterland always reminded us of that area – without the snow and rain of course,” Stephen says. Two years ago, they bought what had been an old dairy cottage, renovated it for their family to enjoy and to rent out when not in use. In the new year, they will begin converting the adjoining shed into additional bedrooms and living space. And the origins of its charming name? “Thirlestane was the name of the street in Edinburgh where we lived when we first moved in together,” Stephen says. “I’m an old romantic at heart really.” The writer was a guest of the operators

Vintage storytellers Shift to thrift to add an individual touch, with found treasures and quirky curios, says author Jessica Bellef
D
o you get a little thrill when you come across magnificent vintage items? I grew up in a home that was, and still is, filled with preloved furniture pieces. Family heirlooms sat next to side-of-the-road finds that had been restored by my dad; rarely, if ever, did anything get delivered, box-fresh, from a furniture store. Weekends were spent on a welltrodden route of antique and old-ware emporiums, trash and treasure markets and thrift shops, and each day’s adventure began with a ritualistic circling of the garage-sale listings in the local paper. These weekends taught me about thriftiness and the alternatives to the bigname retailers. My taste for interesting pieces was formed (or is it genetic?), and I grew to appreciate items with a backstory and a sense of history. I learnt to look out for the cues of a well-made piece – makers’ marks, signs of the handmade as well as construction techniques from years gone by. My own home, however, will show you that I don’t entirely shun the new. Looking around my home office as I type this, I will confess that the majority of the furniture in this room arrived as flat packs, with an Allen key drowning in a hugely intimidating sachet of screws and washers. The pieces do the trick of holding my stuff, but that’s about it – they are purely functional, and I have no emotional attachment to them. There is no romantic backstory, and feelings of the past aren’t evoked when I look at the shiny white pieces. My office chair, however, has its own biography. I saw it on a Facebook marketplace page and was drawn to the shape of the seat and the solid swivel leg. The yellowing label underneath tells me that it was manufactured by Pongrass Furniture, an Australian company that was producing chairs in the 1960s and 1970s. Besides being incredibly comfortable and well made, the chair connects me to Australia’s history; I can’t help but imagine the sorts of rooms this solid furniture piece has seen since its production in the mid20th century. In a room that is already busily humming with props, images and ideas, CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

this chair gives my office a certain energy and a sense of connectedness to other times and lives. Old pieces are reassuring, and they symbolise steadiness. the entirety of a living room in one mindless transaction during a dizzying Saturday in a showroom, buying vintage means that you have to wait it out until the ideal piece crosses your path. So many vintage lovers I’ve met effuse about the thrill of the hunt and the immense satisfaction in finding the perfect piece after months, or even years, of searching. It makes the piece all the more valuable. Old pieces also represent an environmentally friendly way of making a home.
Not only are you saving a piece from ending up in landfill, but you are also minimising the nasty VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that the cheap, mass-produced new pieces will emit into your home’s air via the synthetic materials used in manufacturing. Even if your vintage piece is made of synthetic materials, the VOCs would have long dissipated by the time the item is introduced into your home. For me, the scent of dusty timber and a lingering sense of the past will always trump shiny and new.
TOP TIPS FOR ACQUIRING ‘NEW TO YOU’ PIECES 1 Be persistent and consistent. Visit thrift shops, markets, vintage and antique retailers, junk shops and online marketplaces whenever you can – you never know when that perfect-for-you piece will surface. 2 Get educated and price savvy. It’s good to know when something is fairly priced or incorrectly tagged as authentic vintage. Ask the seller questions, and research any visible manufacturer names for price comparisons. Look out for labels and makers’ marks, or request photos of these if shopping online. 3 Don’t be afraid of surface scratches. These can often be buffed out with the right furniture oil, and sometimes a little wear and tear gives a piece character anyway. Don’t worry about wobbly legs, either – often a simple tightening of the screws will steady furniture items. 4 Ignore seat coverings. Look beyond the dated or damaged upholstery, and check out the bones of the piece. Investment in reupholstering will give the item a whole new lease on life. Seek out real wood. In my mind, solid timber wins out over particleboard every time. 5 Good things come to those who wait. Keep a checklist of the items you are looking for (and the measurements required), and jump on something if it pops up. Who knows when you will see that piece again? LAST WORD
Phil Brown The annoying thing is that things are changing every day. Have you noticed this annoying fact? The city, my friends and family, the climate ... This may come as a surprise to some of you but I don’t like change. I’m not adventurous at all, I love my routine and I want things to stay exactly the way they are. Or were. Like in some undiscovered pharaoh’s tomb, perhaps. The annoying thing is, however, that things are changing every day. Have you noticed this annoying fact? The city, my friends and family, the climate, everything is changing. So will you all just stand still for a minute! Preferably for a decade. That would be nice. I tried to grapple with this some years back by reading that book Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. This book is for people like me, people who suffer from
a paralysing disease called neophobia, which is a fear of anything new. I read the book and it just made me more anxious and neophobic. I mean I’ve got it bad! If I could only mould the world to suit me, keep everything as it was. If that were the case I would still be wearing flares. My hair has been exactly the same style (although it used to be darker) as it was in 1974 and I consider that a victory of sorts. I try to freeze-frame my life at home by having a place for everything with everything in its place but there is a conspiracy to undermine this. Sometimes my wife will move something and I am completely thrown. Recently this happened to a small, fragile and quite
beautiful little Japanese print. My wife moved it and replaced it with a small decorated mirror from Nepal, which meant I got to see the look on my own face after this outrage. “Where the f--- is my Ukiyo-e print?!” I shouted. She pointed to it. It hadn’t actually moved far but that’s really not the point. The point is that it wasn’t where it was supposed to be and for me that was like tipping the world on its axis. Now I should point out that I am aware of my neophobia, as you can tell. Or I wouldn’t be writing this, would I? Awareness is one thing. Some people aren’t quite so aware but I don’t want to end up like Norman Bates in Psycho, who was so
keen to keep everything as it was that he left his dead mother in her rocking chair until she became mummified. But he still spoke to her as if she was alive. Scary movie and maybe Alfred Hitchcock was making a point about neophobia? Sometimes, when change comes crashing into my world, I retreat to my bedroom, close the curtains, put on my dressing gown, lie on the bed and watch re-runs of Seinfeld. That world never changes and I do find that very gratifying. But eventually I have to go back out into the world and deal with the fact that today isn’t yesterday and that tomorrow is nearly here. Bugger.

Sense of community grows as locals get active Live Life Get Active is committed to creating healthier and happier communities by offering free group exercise classes at over 100 locations around the country. Medibank is proud to be its National Health and Wellbeing partner, providing education and resources to support participants on their path to better health.
In
the suburb of Newstead in Brisbane, there’s a health, fitness and wellbeing camp that runs Monday to Friday all year (with the exception of school holidays). It’s called Live Life Get Active. There’s no screaming boot-camp instructor, no sweaty towels left out on weight machines, and no gym fees. It’s the new way communities across Australia are getting healthy, happy and active, and Newstead is no different.
Four times per week, Torben Strodl leads his local camp in boxing and cross-training sessions that gets local members’ blood pumping and love for fitness growing. The free, 45-minute outdoor classes are a
great way to work out that many of his committed members have never enjoyed before, and for a trainer like Torben, the results are just as positive (if not more) than paid fitness classes. “I love seeing improvements in peoples’ fitness and mood as a result of my classes. Members regularly tell me how they’re now opting for more active lifestyles, getting involved in activities such as mountain climbing and other sports.” The structure of the sessions sees everyone cared for and trained at an appropriate level. Adults of varying ages and abilities come to train without reservation about seeing themselves as a ‘beginner’, and the health rewards are in plain view. “Many members begin my classes after having done no exercise before, and each week I get to see them get stronger and fitter,” Torben says. He also notes that one of the best parts of the camps is seeing what members have achieved at the
end of a session, “they feel good, endorphins are flowing and smiles are a plenty. They definitely feel like they have exercised but in a good way -I never push anyone too hard and let everyone work within their limits.” Arguably the most important point of the Live Life Get Active camps is their sense of community, and more and more neighbours are finding their new mates in the outdoors, with a bit of sweat, a lot of laughs, and a Live Life Get Active family. Because the journey to a healthier, happier you, means taking care of yourself on the inside and out. “It’s truly important that society as a whole takes care of themselves so they can take better care for one another.” And the results? Torben is proud to see them occur right in front of his eyes. “Enabling members to live healthy, active lives is so important. Nobody should miss out on exercise because they don’t feel comfortable at a gym.”
