This week... In the spirit of Father’s Day this Sunday, September 1, we are saluting dads who go the extra mile for their offspring – and love every minute of it (Cover Story, P8). It seems many modern dads think nothing of fronting up for tuckshop duty or catering dance competitions (yes, dance dads are a thing) and it’s proof, surely, that gender stereotypes have no place in 21st century parenting. Chris Hemsworth, Thor himself, has even been known to pack a lunch or two at his children’s school canteen in Byron Bay. So it must be the thing to do. To all you “superdads” out there, here’s wishing you a relaxing Father’s Day. You’ve earned it.

THE CHAT

Country strong Chart topper Kelsea Ballerini will join a star line-up at a country music extravaganza in Brisbane this month Cassandra Houghton

W

hen US country music singer Kelsea Ballerini first put her poems to melodies in her family’s East Tennessee home at age 12, she never dreamt it would lead to Grammy nominations, worldwide tours, and song collaborations with the likes of Ed Sheeran. Nor did she imagine she’d exceed 10 million monthly streams on Spotify or have her first three singles go platinum in the US. She was focused on typical pre-teen things. Like boys. “I started writing songs when my parents got divorced and it was a really difficult chapter of my life, and 12 years old as a woman – a girl – is already hard because you’re like ‘oh my gosh, boys are cute’, and ‘oh my gosh, I’m lanky’, and ‘oh my gosh, how is all this happening at once’,” she says, on the phone to Brisbane News from her hometown Nashville. “And so music kind of became an outlet for me. I would write them as poems, but with a melody, and record them as capella tracks into Garage Band.” The 25-year old hits Australian stages on September 29 for the inaugural Country To Country (C2C) music festival with headliner Tim McGraw, after spending the past few years playing and touring with country music greats such as Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum. “I live in a state of nerves,” she laughs. “I think the live thing – I’ve only just now started to get comfortable with it because when I put out my first single I had never played a full band show before in my life. I definitely had to adjust to it quickly.”

Quickly, indeed. Kelsea released her debut album The First Time four years ago, with Unapologetically following in 2017, and a host of accolades including a Billboard “Rising Star” Award, two Grammy nominations, an ACM (Academy of Country Music) Award, and the title of youngest person to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. Album number three is on its way, featuring collaborations with Julia Michaels, Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) and Ed Sheeran. “You’re the first person I’ve had the chance to talk to about it! I’m so excited,” she says. “I’ve had some of these songs for almost two years now and to be able to finally put them together where it makes sense and know that it’s time to bring it all to life – it feels like Christmas.” Amid the whirlwind career success, she also found the time to marry Australian country music singer Morgan Evans. I don’t fight the urge to ask her how she feels about Vegemite. “I was tricked into it!” she exclaims. “We have some in our cupboard at all times because it’s Morgan’s thing, and I was trying Australian candy – Caramello Koalas and things, and then someone was like, ‘Here’s a spoonful of Vegemite’. And it looked like chocolate, so I had the whole spoonful! I haven’t had it since.” Country To Country, Sep 29, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall c2c-countrytocountry.com.au

Daddy cool Dads who volunteer for everything from tuckshop to dance school catering are redefining fatherhood

STEPPING UP ... Police officer and “dance dad” Chris Lynch with Kate, 8, and Jhet, 10. Picture: Russell Shakespeare/AAP

Tonya Turner

C

hris Lynch is fired up. The tuckshop he helps to run at his daughters’ dance school has raised almost $30,000 towards their US tour in late September. “We work in the tuckshop to have this money to spend on costumes, land travel and passes to help get the kids to America every two years,” he says. A full-time police officer in Brisbane by day, Chris, 44, has been volunteering at Happyfeet on the Gold Coast for three years where his two youngest daughters, Jhet, 10, and Kate, 8, attend classes. After the parents who used to run the tuckshop left, Chris got chatting to another mum at the school one Saturday and they decided to take matters into their own hands. Before long they were serving curries, tacos, toasted sandwiches, nachos, hot dogs, nuggets, hot chips and noodles up to twice a week. Prior to running the tuckshop, Chris also helped out at concerts when his two eldest daughters, Jayde, 16, and Holly, 12, danced at the school, too. “I like to break the mould. I don’t like sticking to the rule of mums do this and dads do that. The biggest thing I don’t like is ‘you’re a mum, so you’ve got to be in the tuckshop’. Why does it have to be gender specific?” he says. Chris is one of the growing number of dads putting their hands up at their kids’ schools, sporting clubs and community groups. Whether helping out in the classroom, leading the Scouts club or wrapping sushi rolls like a superhero in your kid’s school tuckshop like Chris Hemsworth in a YouTube video that went viral earlier this year, more dads are stepping up when it comes to volunteering. “As a dad I’ve always wanted to be involved and see what the kids do, regardless of whether I had boys or girls,” Chris says. As a child, growing up in Victoria, Chris played Aussie rules with his dad coaching the team. “He moved to football manager, he was the linesman, he’d paint the field, all of

COVER STORY

ADVENTURE BOUND ... Josh Adams and son Oscar, 8, find common ground through scouting. Picture: Russell Shakespeare/AAP that sort of stuff, so it was in my DNA. I want to be involved.” Although finding time to volunteer while working a demanding job can seem almost impossible, Chris found it helped him find balance, improve his overall wellbeing and bring him closer to his wife, Nillin, and their kids. “Being in the police service is stressful work and I was getting totally consumed with it. I needed a different avenue and the tuckshop venture put me in another headspace and helped me take my mind off it and be involved with the kids more,” he says. Craig Edmonds, 48, of Wilston was in a similar place when he was working as a chef and running his own restaurant. After opting to sell up, he became a stay-at-home dad six years ago and hasn’t looked back. “Working as a chef you don’t get to see your kids, so I decided it was time to put my family life first. It works for us,” he says. A year ago his wife Emma, who works full-time in human resources, suggested he help out at the tuckshop where their kids Jasper, 9, and Mischa, 7, go to school. “I might get a movie contract out of it. I’ll be Thor 2,” he says, not realising there have already been three Thor movies. “Shows how much I’ve been out,” he laughs. After tuckshop duty, he and the other dads helping out will occasionally head out for a meal before picking up the kids. Craig also volunteers twice a week in the classroom, this year helping out with maths rotations and building robots in technology. “It’s great just helping out, having a bit of a laugh, meeting some of the other parents and getting to know the kids. It makes a difference to the day,” he says. For Josh Adams, 44, of Jindalee, volunteering has always been about spending more time with his three children Zacariah, 19, Georgia, 15, and Oscar, 8. “I love being with my kids, I’ve always wanted to be a dad, even when I was 16

and people asked me what I wanted to be, I said I wanted to be a dad,” he says. All up, Josh has been volunteering for 12 years, spending five years with the rugby club as coach, linesman, ground official and fundraising helper, three years with the netball club as coach and president, five years as basketball coach for all three kids, and two years most recently with the Scouts – all while working full-time in IT. After telling his wife, Emma, that he wouldn’t sign up to anything when attending Oscar’s first Scouts meeting, he returned home with the news he was the new treasurer. “My wife thinks I’m crazy,

most people think I’m crazy, but it is fun. It’s just great hanging out with the kids. They’ve got no hang ups, they’ve got no preconceptions, they just want to do things that are fun and it’s a big difference to your normal working day,” he says. A year later, he put his hand up to be a co-leader, and in the tradition of Scouts chose his animal name, Yowie. Alongside “Bear”, he leads the boys and girls as they climb trees, make fires, go hiking, build a community garden and more. “I’ve done a lot of camping and I like getting out and about. Growing up in the ’80s we did a lot of things kids don’t do these days,” he says. For Josh, getting to know the community is another big plus of volunteering. “I run into my son’s friends on the bus going to work now and still talk to them about when we played certain basketball games and grand finals. It continues on. I’m lucky to be old enough to see that now. It’s a pretty special thing and you don’t get that unless you put yourself out there,” he says.

TRAILBLAZER

Shop ‘til you drop Amy Hinshchen is reinventing retail with her supersized marketplace for local makers Emma Schafer A former schoolteacher, Amy Hinschen, 32, owns Vend Marketplace, a retail space changing the way we shop. Her megawarehouse in Virginia, on Brisbane’s northside, is home to more than 80 shops run by local artisans selling everything from clothes, art and furniture to skincare, plants and pet products. WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU? We are coming up to the one-year anniversary of Vend and we’ve decided to celebrate with a bang. We’re throwing a huge ’70s party on September 7. We will have live music, showbags, a giant spin-thewheel where you can win various prizes, yummy food, a pop-up bar and a '70s dress-up competition. WHAT INSPIRED VEND? I have always wanted to own my own business, so that’s where it all started. I also noticed that smaller businesses, especially creatives, were struggling to start up their own shops and get their products out there. I also knew it couldn’t just be a shared retail space where shop owners manned their shop, and we made it so that they never have to be there. We take care of all the sales for them from the Vend point-of-sale desk.

TREASURE TROVE ... Amy Hinschen with colourful wares at her Vend indoor market in Virginia. Picture: Russell Shakespeare/AAP ARE YOU CHANGING THE WAY WE SHOP? I believe this is the future of shared retail space for small businesses. Shoppers are becoming much more aware of who they are shopping from and are wanting to support small local businesses rather than large chains. Our customers love that they have so much variety and can buy one-off pieces, all while supporting a small business. WHAT ELSE IS AT VEND? An awesome lawn area with giant games, a baby-friendly area and playground, and our Vend cafe that not only offers fantastic food, coffee, drinks and cakes but is also

licensed to sell alcohol. We also have our huge indoor greenhouse.

working and who obsesses about achieving goals as much as me.

WHAT PUTS A SPRING IN YOUR STEP? Helping local small businesses set up their own shop and seeing them grow over time as a business.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BRISBANE? The weather, the chilled lifestyle and it’s great being an hour or so drive from the beach in either direction.

WHEN OR WHERE ARE YOU HAPPIEST? At home on the couch with my cats, watching a horror movie.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? We are currently looking at properties in Melbourne to launch the next Vend.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My partner Kyle Steele. Until I met him, I’d never met anyone who is as hard

LIFE

Alicia Pyke Vegetarians have always been part of my world – my dad gave up meat 15 years ago – but I didn’t expect to be married to one So, great news, my husband is back. After six months working in Cambodia, Guy is home. Yay! Settling back into life together isn’t without its adjustments – we both like things our way – however the biggest hurdle is the most unexpected. He’s a vegetarian now. This is a man who once texted when we were dating to say he’d just eaten a steak bigger than his head. Some kind of primal boast? Maybe. Our wedding vows did include the declaration we both agreed “lamb is the king of meats” so he wasn’t entirely off the mark.

It’s the way his vegetarianism has expressed itself that’s surprised me. Predictably, his first meal back in Brisbane was a barbecued T-bone, followed by his mum’s lamb roast the next day and a plate of sticky pork ribs after a boys’ night out sampling the taps at Felons Brewing Co. So far, so normal. But the next day he swore off land animals for good. It’s not that he came back from Cambodia a freshly minted vego, but it did play a part. The children’s charity where he worked provides a daily sit-down lunch for the kids and staff. Among those shared

plates of rice, vegies and fish was locally raised meat. Animals that were in a nearby field yesterday were on his plate today and Guy felt closer to his food than ever before. It made him wonder whether he had the right to eat any animal he couldn’t face up to killing with his own hands, if required. That’s something I’d never considered, although I shop at boutique butchers for pasture-raised meat to ease my own concerns. But while I certainly eat less meat than I have in the past, I have no intention to give it up. Vegetarians have always been part of my world – my dad gave up meat 15 years

ago plus my bestie and her daughters are vego – but I didn’t expect to be married to one. Now that I am, I’m committed to making our dietary differences work. Yes, we have tried some of those strange new plant-based “fake meat” burgers at the supermarket. The verdict? Weirdly delicious, mostly. Still, some things will never be the same. Like sharing a slab of beef cooked over the fireplace at our favourite restaurant in Paris (it’s Robert et Louise, if you’re curious). We’ll just have to go for falafel in the Marais instead.

We have been decorating Australian homes with finest handwoven timeless treasures, at unbeatable prices for over 50 years. SYDNEY | PERTH | ADELAIDE | BRISBANE | DARWIN | MELBOURNE

FOOD + DRINK

As you like it Cleverly curated bistro fare comes with a dazzling drinks list at this city eatery RESTAURANT Tony Harper There’s a dish at The Euro – cotoletta – that I reckon has been on the menu since day one. Or at least since I first dined there in its early months. I honestly can’t recall if it’s exactly the same or it has morphed; if it’s better now, or just as good. But it is simple, beautifully executed and delicious. And it shows that the restaurant, despite the slow but steady change of high-profile chefs in charge of the kitchen, has maintained its identity. For a place that isn’t a craft beer bar The Euro offers a big, thoughtfully curated range of beers – some craft, some mainstream, some domestic, others not. And the wine list treads a similar but broader path, with some decadent bottles for the inner city spenders and a clever array of lesser stuff. It’s a big, sprawling collection, with a section devoted to the wines of Queensland (hooray), a range of saké, a dazzling array of champagnes and just about anything else you could wish for. Prices kick off at $13 a glass and end in the thousands for a rare, old Dom Perignon Oenotheque. The Euro is emphatically a bistro – no foams, powders or deconstructions – and

URBAN EDGE … The Euro blends slick service with East-meets-West cuisine; (below) the tonka bean creme brulee. its menu draws from all sorts of places across Europe and Asia, combining them at times into clever creations. There is the cotoletta – distinctly Italian, but here nestled with coleslaw (of Dutch origin I reckon) and ponzu sauce, which is Japanese. It works. And there is the veal tartare ($24) with gojuchang – Korean – and gomasio which is again Japanese. So I guess there are classics that have been taken to bits, the core parts retained and then new bits added with a refreshing disregard for convention or country. We begin with grilled calamari ($22), which, unexpectedly, ends up being the best dish we eat. It comes on a bed of parsley pesto with a liberal cover of jamon crumbs. It’s wildly good. Grilled scallops and cauliflower puree (so far quite a classic combination) are paired with miso butter and crunchy-fried kale ($26). There’s that Euro-meets-Asia thing again. Brisbane Valley quail ($25),

plump, juicy, perfectly pink, is topped by a handful of escabeche ... meat-meetspickle. Then the cotoletta ($42) and Angus sirloin with crunchy potatoes and porcini sauce ($47). There’s a section of the menu devoted to big share plates – lamb shoulder, Kojiaged beef, grilled Gold Coast tiger prawns, baby chicken – and another of vegetarian dishes. Then three rather creative desserts, including pina colada with its pineapple pavlova, lime and coconut mousse ($18), plus cheese. Nothing is either hurried or slow – it comes out perfectly paced. The front of house team is slick, watchful and confident. It’s a coddling dining experience in a cleverly designed space. It’s hard to imagine anyone, no matter how fussy, how demanding, not enjoying a meal at the Euro. There’s a gloss to the whole experience, and the offering in terms of food and drink manages a perfectly precarious balance between familiarity and adventure.

Spice is nice The Boom Boom Room’s riff on a classic will have you longing for cocktail hour

ABOUT THE BARTENDER

HOW SWEET IT IS OLD FASHIONED

He has worked at some of the world’s most glittering events including The Grammys and Cannes Film Festival and now Aaron Clark is back in his native Brisbane, mixing magical potions for guests at The Boom Boom Room. The bar manager, from Sandgate in Brisbane’s bayside, constantly pushes the boundaries of cocktail making and acts as a mentor for up-and-coming industry talent across the Ghanem Group portfolio, owners of The Boom Boom Room. Aaron has also implemented several sustainability initiatives at the venue. These include repurposing unused champagne into syrups for cocktails and using every last bit of fruit from the kitchen. For example, pineapple skin will be infused with gin, while the flesh will be used to make pineapple and white pepper cordial. Aaron’s go-to drink? A classic daiquiri with fresh lime, shaken to perfection.

INGREDIENTS 50ml turmeric-infused Pisco brandy 20ml pear stock 20ml Pineau de Charentes fortified wine 2 dashes Angostura Bitters Turmeric infused pisco 1 bottle of Barsol Quebranta Pisco, or any good quality Pisco 12.5g of freshly grated turmeric root Pear Stock 1kg sugar 1kg peeled whole pears 500ml water 1 bottle Angus Brut cuvee 150ml lillet 1 cinnamon stick 7 star anise 1 vanilla pod, split 60ml lemon juice Makes 1L Method Add the turmeric root to the Pisco and leave to infuse for three hours at room temperature. Fine strain the Pisco through cheesecloth or a clean Chux to remove turmeric pieces. Combine pear stock ingredients in a pot and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and allow to simmer, covered, for two hours. Take off the heat, strain the liquid and allow to cool. This recipe makes about 1L of pear stock, which keeps for about a month in the fridge. To make a single cocktail, combine 20ml of the pear stock with the turmeric-infused Pisco, Pineau de Charentes and Angostura Bitters in a mixing glass then fill to the top with cubed ice. Stir for about 30 revolutions or until the desired chill and dilution is achieved. Pour the liquid only into an empty old fashioned glass, carefully, to avoid unwanted aeration. GOING OUT

From beyond Roxanne McDonald draws on her spiritual side in a new play about fractured families Hannah Davies

W

hen it comes to paranormal encounters, actor Roxanne McDonald has had her fair share. So when it came to playing Nana Lou in the indigenous play From Darkness she could draw on past experience. The new work by Steven Oliver, to be staged by La Boite Theatre this month as part of Brisbane Festival, centres on a fractured family facing the anniversary of their brother and son’s death. Dad Eric is in denial, mum Abigail is drinking to numb her pain, Nana Lou won’t stop talking about it, and brother Preston is being visited by spirits while he sleeps. The family’s distance from each other and the world is coming to a head a head and an encounter with otherworldly forces is the catalyst they need. Roxanne, who lives at Camp Hill, is descended from the Mandandanji and Darambal tribes of central Queensland. She says she is no stranger to the spirit world. “When my mum passed away in 2012, she sent me a few signs that she was still watching over us. “There was one incident when a huge gust of wind swept through her room. It came and went so quickly, and when I looked in the room, my mum’s hat had blown out of the closed cupboard and was sitting on the mat,” Roxanne says. “It was just something that couldn’t be explained.

5 – 28 SEPT

“On another occasion my niece felt someone tapping her on the shoulder. We knew it was Mum.” Spiritual elements aside, Roxanne says audiences will love the thoughtprovoking nature of this razor-sharp dark comedy – which has its world premiere on September 7 -– and how it explores the intersection of culture, grief and humanity. “I find Steven’s writing really refreshing. He looks at things from different angles and from a philosophical view,” Roxanne says. “The themes of what’s happening within the family can also be looked at from a broader worldwide sense. “I think there is something everyone can relate to in this play. We all know how it feels to lose someone and to deal with grief, and that is something that creates a great sense of unity among the audience. “Being an indigenous play it also helps highlight what contemporary Aboriginal families are all about in terms of the things we do and what we talk about.” While she still misses her mum Loretta, Roxanne, 58, says she always speaks to her before the curtain goes up. “Mum was my biggest fan and she’s always missed whenever I do a show, but I connect with her before the start of every performance and ask her to give me strength.” From Darkness, for 15+ audiences, Sep 7-28, The Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove. brisbanefestival.com.au

ART

Play of light An exhibition of stunning images by the late great Australian photographer Max Dupain takes the viewer back to a bygone era Phil Brown

I

t would have been a fairly conventional aerial view of Cairns except for one important fact. It was taken by Max Dupain. Chinaman Creek (not the most politically correct title in today’s parlance) is a 1943 photo by Australia’s modernist master and arguably our most famous photographer. Even if you think you don’t know Max Dupain, I reckon you might. Certainly you would recognise his most famous image, Sunbaker, taken in 1932. Not his favourite, but certainly his best known and loved. It’s not among the suite of prints now showing (and more importantly, available to buy) from the private collection of Sydney art dealer Josef Lebovic at The Antique Guild’s Charlotte St store. In what looks like a back lot from Antiques Roadshow, you will find a wall of exquisite Dupain works in a small exhibition that has the imprimatur of his son, Rex. Works that are not signed by Dupain himself feature his son’s moniker by way of authentication. While you won’t find Sunbaker among them, you will find Manly (Surf Boat from V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

Shark Tower). This photo dates to the 1940s and is a view of the Manly beachfront with a surfboat launching. But let me take you back to Chinaman Creek for a moment as we wonder what makes it so special. This is a sepia print that adds ambience and somehow, in what could otherwise have been a rudimentary shot, Dupain has managed to imbue his photo with something of the Dreamtime and the mystique of an ancient landscape with the creek winding snakelike through mangroves in the foreground. It has a certain romance like much of Dupain’s work. His ability to capture shadows and just the right light and the nuances of his compositions is quite remarkable. Photography is not always art to my mind. It takes a special eye to elevate it to the realm of fine art and Dupain was the master, our own Man Ray, if you like. Whether he liked his Sunbaker or not, it’s certainly his most famous photo. The version most people know is a large format and shows a man wet from the surf lying on the sand. Dupain, who died in 1992 at

AUSTRALIAN DREAM ... Max Dupain was a master of his craft (below); his works Woman in Hat with Peanuts (above left) and Manly (Surf Boat from Shark Tower).

the age of 81, is said to have preferred other iterations of that shot and he dubbed the famous version “that bloody Sunbaker”. This little Brisbane showing of work from his vast archive features a rather lovely photo entitled Brisbane River. There’s a wake on the water trailing off into the distance and the low-rise city in silhouette on the distant banks. It was taken around 1946 after all. There are of course works from his native Sydney including Cahill Expressway and View from Sydney Harbour Bridge. His Circular Quay is positively iconic, and then there are his lovely shell photos from the 1980s. Nude with Shadow shows he was adept with the human form. Usually you would have to go to an art museum to see such work. If you are a collector, this is a rare chance to get a Max Dupain and many are reasonably priced down to about $1500. Not bad at all. FILM

THE NIGHTINGALE (MA 15+) hhhkj Director Jennifer Kent Starring Aisling Franciosi, Baykali Ganambarr, Sam Claflin This historical revenge drama, set in early 19th century Tasmania, has been woefully misrepresented by the controversy that preceded its release. Sure, the rape sequences are brutal – it’s hard to imagine how else a filmmaker might have portrayed such a toxic abuse of authority and power – but they are neither gratuitous nor graphic. While the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war is only now being widely documented, it’s a practice that goes back centuries. Perhaps Kent’s uncompromising exploration of this little-explored aspect of our colonial past is what caused such offence to the small portion of the Sydney Film Festival audience that walked out during early screenings. If so, they made the classic mistake of shooting the messenger. Gender politics are also at play here. There have been no reports of seats being vacated during Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood … in which Brad Pitt pulps a woman’s skull on a mantelpiece. Or Mel Gibson’s Dragged Across Concrete, in which violent criminals humiliate a female hostage. What sets The Nightingale apart is writer-director Jennifer Kent’s conscious focus on the victim/protagonist during the course of her terrifying ordeal – the camera remains on Clare’s (Franciosi) face for what feels like eons. We see the light go out of her eyes as the malignant British lieutenant Hawkins (Claflin) and his noxious offsider Ruse (Damon Herriman) destroy everything she holds dear. The unremitting horror of this sequence

SCORE TO SETTLE ... Seeking revenge, Clare (Aisling Franciosi) takes matters into her own hands in the Tasmanian wilderness. is necessary to explain Clare’s extreme metamorphosis in the scenes that follow from young wife and mother to unhinged avenger. Engaging the services of an Aboriginal tracker, Billy (Ganambarr), she pursues Hawkins and his team deep into the Tasmanian wilderness in a quest for justice and retribution. Kent doesn’t hold back in her portrayal of the treatment of the country’s indigenous inhabitants – two Aboriginal

men swing by nooses from neighbouring trees in an image more familiar from America’s Deep South; another group is shot in cold blood while shackled together in a line. Nor is there any sense of satisfaction or catharsis when Clare finally catches up with one of the perpetrators. The Nightingale is a powerful and unflinching exploration of aspects of our history that most of us would rather forget

ANGEL HAS FALLEN (MA15+) hhkjj Director Ric Roman Waugh Starring Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Jada Pinkett Smith Having saved the President of the United States from two previous assassination attempts, Mike Banning (Butler) is looking a bit rough around the edges. But even taking into account the compressed vertebrae, debilitating migraines and what appears to be a raging OxyContin addiction, the hard-charging Secret Service agent can still run rings around his allies and his adversaries. So when a well-co-ordinated drone attack decimates the POTUS’s heavily armed security detail, Banning’s razorsharp reflexes once again save the leader of the free world from … well, let’s just say that in the latest instalment in the Fallen franchise, the bad guys are a little closer to home. Allan Trumbull (Freeman), who was Speaker of the House in the original film 16 BRISBANE NEWS August 28-September 3, 2019

ON THE RUN ... Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman in Angel Has Fallen. and vice president in the sequel, has been promoted to president in Angel Has Fallen. Given their long association, Trumbull has a warm, close and mutually respectful relationship with Banning, who at this point, is pretty much an Oval Office institution. (He had a similarly matey

relationship with Trumbull’s predecessor, played by Aaron Eckhart). A man of integrity, Trumbull is a West Wing kind of president; the sort you wish you had. But after being pulled unconscious from the freezing lake into which he and Banning dive to evade the drone attack, he

– from a distinctive, female perspective. For all the reasons listed above, it’s an important Australian film. But it’s not nearly as fertile a piece of storytelling as Kent’s groundbreaking 2014 horror film The Babadook. Kent’s directorial debut was built on layers of subtext. Her follow up is direct almost to the point of didacticism. A more nuanced portrayal of good and evil might have gone a little deeper.

remains in a coma. On the basis of damning evidence that links Banning to an apparent Russian Government-funded assassination attempt, Trumbull’s hawkish VP (Tim Blake Nelson) gears up for WWIII. With the US law enforcement authorities in hot pursuit, Banning sets off across the country – to simultaneously clear his name and arrest Armageddon. The action is fast, furious and without unnecessary frills. The firepower is impressive and the multiple explosions would light even Michael Bay’s fuse. There’s also an attention-grabbing sequence, in remote forest in Virginia, in which Banning is reunited with the father who abandoned him – a crusty old war vet who lives off the grid, played by Nick Nolte. Taking over the role of Banning’s wife, Leah, from Radha Mitchell is Piper Perabo. Jada Pinkett Smith sells her part, as a hard-ass FBI agent. A competent action adventure with uncomplicated morals. AT HOME

SITTING PRETTY … Style blogger Nikki Parkinson (inset); and her revamped living room.

Blank canvas A lick of paint could be all that stands between you and the living room of your dreams

I

s FOMU (Fear of Mucking Up) preventing you from giving your interiors the freshen up they need? Brisbane-based styling guru, blogger and author Nikki Parkinson felt the fear but did it anyway when it came to making over the living room of her Queenslander – with a little help from British Paints. Here, she reveals her tips to achieving a glam, new-look living room in a weekend, and for less than $500.

CHOOSE A LOOK To create a blank canvas and save time hunting for new furnishings, Nikki decided to paint the walls white to lift the room, while adding colour through soft furnishings and pulling additional decor items from other rooms in the house.

“I love how fresh a white colour scheme looks, as it balances our chocolate sofas and timber floors. I also wanted to bring touches of the outside in by adding more indoor plants.”

KNOW YOUR BUDGET Nikki knew she didn’t want to spend money buying all new furniture so decided on a theme that would still be able to incorporate what she already owned. In addition, she saved time and money with British Paints Paint & Prime wall and ceiling paint, a paint and primer in one which helps hide surface imperfections in two coats.

DON’T SKIP THE SAMPLE POTS “We bought four different British Paints

whites from Bunnings, painted them on each wall and observed how they all looked at various times throughout the day and night.” The winner? Star White half tint, a cool but not clinical white, softened by using the half shade. Other whites of note: Infinity White, a neutral shade that pairs beautifully with timber tones; and White Beam or Tokyo Snow, both warmer, milky-cream hues that evoke feelings of comfort.

DO THE PREP With any interior project, using the right tools and preparing the room before painting will always ensure the best outcome. “The British Paints three-step “Plan, Prep, Paint” guide and online videos were super helpful to give me the

confidence I needed to get started and fight my FOMU,” Nikki says.

FINAL TOUCHES By simply changing the room layout, adding a few new soft furnishings and using already existing items from the home, Nikki was able to finish the makeover and create the haven she was looking for. “We added accent colours of black and pink through some new cushions and light fittings and are really happy with the outcome. It’s amazing what a simple paint refresh and some clever revitalisation of decor items from the house can do to really transform a room from zero to hero.” britishpaints.com.au

Andrew McGahan, an awardwinning writer who studied in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne. He died from cancer in February this year. In The Rich Man’s House, McGahan paints a portrait of eccentric billionaire Walter Richman who constructs his dream home at the foot of The Wheel. The book opens with the death of the architect who designed the mansion and his daughter, Rita Gausse, discovering that her father’s death was among a string that occurred during the build. Writers John Birmingham, Andrew Stafford and Samuel Wagan Watson will pay tribute to the late author at In Praise of Andrew McGahan, State Library of Queensland, 2.30pm, Sep 6.

The Nazi regime gave history a remarkable range of villains, but zoologist Ernst Schafer is surely one of the more unusual. Leah Kaminsky’s novel follows a brilliant young scientist prepared to do almost anything to continue his work. In 1936, Heinrich Himmler takes him under his wing, ready to send him to Tibet to find evidence of the origins of the Aryan race. It’s a ludicrous proposition, but Ernst just wants to lead the expedition. As a young man on the rise through the SS ranks, his childhood sweetheart must be approved before he can marry her, and go through a special training course for SS wives. The purity of her genes must also be beyond question. Kaminsky is creepily creative in showing how dangerous Ernst’s delusions are, and how damaging. Beautifully written, it’s a deft mix of adventure and surreal horror. Kaminsky will speak at Bulimba Library, Bulimba, noon, Sep 6.

Andrew Stafford’s first book Pig City, chronicling the twin tales of Queensland’s music and political scenes during the Joh years, is a much-loved tome in our home. And Stafford, a Brisbanebased journalist, holds a muchloved place within the music community. Known for his passion for music and his raw, elegant prose, Stafford’s new offering is both memoir and musical love letter. From his days as Countdown fanboy to visceral accounts of sweaty gigs in sweatier rooms, his gift is to take the reader along for the (taxi) ride. Beneath the book’s musical score, another tale: of Stafford’s unruly mental health, of stays in psych wards and a deep, unfettered sadness. He is unflinchingly honest, and if you love the man, it’s not an easy read. But if a song has ever saved you, then this book is for you. Stafford will speak at the State Library of Queensland, South Bank, Sep 6, 5.30pm.

Former Brisbane teacher A.J. Betts delivers a thrilling sequel to last year’s Hive, with the finale of this dystopian duology set immediately after the dramatic events of the first book. Both novels focus on Hayley, a curious and keenly intelligent teenager who, at the end of Hive, leaves her home, a protective vault under the sea off the coast of Australia. In Rogue, Hayley finds herself in the ocean before landing on remote Maria Island, where she is rescued by a family and discovers a massive asteroid hit Earth 100 years prior. Hayley’s adopted family are among many battling to survive. When she is bitten by a snake, her family risk their lives by taking her to the mainland for treatment. The now Fremantlebased author, who breathes excitement into every page, will speak at several Brisbane Writers Festival events, Sep 3-7.

LAST WORD

Phil Brown Luckily the music stopped abruptly at around 20 minutes past midnight and I wondered if someone had called the cops … it wasn’t me! As you all know I love a party. So I was thrilled that the people in a street nearby decided to have their wedding and reception at home recently. Can you detect a note of sarcasm in my tone? They were very clever though because they letter-dropped the neighbourhood – twice – apologising in advance which is a neat way of getting you on side to stop you complaining on the night. They did leave a number though which was silly of them because not long after midnight I rang it to ask them to shut the hell up. Turned out it was the wedding planner’s number and she was home in bed by then and couldn’t care less.

Anyway, it might have been the loudest wedding ever held in Australia but God bless them and I wish them well. Luckily the music stopped abruptly at about 20 minutes past midnight and I wondered if someone had called the cops. By the way if they did, it wasn’t me! I confess I have done that in the past. I rang them once when we were living in Spring Hill and a party was raging in a house nearby. When it got to the wee small hours I’d had enough so I phoned the police who weren’t too happy about that. A gruff sergeant I spoke to said to me … “Well, we’re pretty busy mate. And what if someone is getting the snot beaten out of

them down in the mall? Would you want us to ignore that and come and see about your party instead?” So I said to him: “First of all officer, it’s not my party. Secondly … is there anyone getting the snot beaten out of them down in the mall right now?” “That’s not the point,” he said. “I think it’s exactly the point,” I replied. Anyway, they did come and shut that party down shortly afterwards so I could get some shut eye. The funny thing is I wasn’t sure whose party it was although some years later I met the bloke whose party it was. It had been his 50th birthday apparently. I never let on that I was the

bloke who called the police that night. Anyway if you’re throwing a shindig and the cops turn up, you know your party is a success, right? I cured myself of parties when I was young. As a teenage surfie on the Gold Coast, it was party after party every weekend. I can’t remember how many homes we trashed in the process. Luckily there are few parties in our neighbourhood. We did have one for my wife’s 50th and it may have got a bit loud at times but we invited all the neighbours so they really couldn’t complain. I threw the last person out around 11.45pm. “Thanks for coming,” I said. “And thanks for going too.”

Traditional charm It was the traditional Queenslander charm that first attracted Rick and Petrina Jobson but they soon found much more to the grand Windsor home. While the home came with an impressive pedigree having appeared in Australian movies through a previous owner – a designer who made costumes for the likes of Dame Edna – the couple recognised straight away it was something special. “We bought it in 1994, so 25 years ago,” Rick says. “At the time we wanted a fairly big home, because we had three young kids. “We wanted a big backyard, swimming pool and something that was central and close to the city and also fairly close to the airport because I travel for business a lot. “I think the appeal of the house was the grandeur of the house. “It was built in 1883 and still had most of the original features. “It was just a beautiful old-world home which had been well restored when we bought it.’’ Petrina remembers being impressed at the time that the property at 30

NEW FARM

Constitution Rd had plenty of modern conveniences, but it retained its original features including striking pressed metal ceilings. During their ownership, the couple have also renovated, updating the kitchen and bathrooms, while still retaining the historic feel of the five-bedroom threebathroom house. “More recently we put in a new laundry, recarpeted, those sorts of things,” Rick says.

Stunning outlook It has been the Blocksidge family home for almost 50 years. But with its owner Bruce Blocksidge, the founder of Blocksidge Real Estate, now 92, and his children, having well and truly moved on, it is time to sell the statement Hamilton house. Son Jonathan Blockside, who is now the managing director of Blocksidge Real Estate, has many fond memories of growing up at the property with his sisters, Anna and Vanessa. “I was about 10 years old when we moved in,” Jonathan says. “I remember having this feeling of great excitement when we moved in to this great house on top of Hamilton Hill. “Mum (Jennifer, deceased) was English and dad was quite old fashioned and a bit Victorianesque so an English-style home appealed to them.” But now the time has come to pass the striking house on to another family. Spanning four levels, the characterfilled residence on the prized 976sq m block has overlooked the river and city for close to a century. Featuring old world charm, it has four

bedrooms including a massive master suite with its own fireplace, walk-in wardrobes, dressing room and ensuite. There is even an attic bedroom that could be used as a teenage retreat. The house has only ever been owned by two families, including the Blocksidge family. It has recently been rented and used by the Italian consulate. Jonathan says his parents updated the house when they bought it and they had added an extension.
