This week... I simply could not imagine Brisbane News without Phil Brown’s Last Word (P26) and before you ask, no, he’s not paying me to say that. Our long-time columnist (far right, as a boy) serves up an extra helping of his wit and wisdom this week with a preview of his new memoir, The Kowloon Kid – A Hong Kong Childhood (P16). The book, out now, is a wonderful snapshot of life in the former British colony in the swinging ’60s, where Phil’s neighbours included Michael Hutchence (yes, that Michael Hutchence) and The Peninsula hotel was the expat community’s glamorous home away from home. Phil has plenty of stories about those golden days that he’ll share at upcoming author talks, including at the Brisbane Writers Festival on Sep 7. Laughs guaranteed.

Folk fusion Emma Beau will invoke her country upbringing when she serenades Ekka crowds this month Gerard Cockburn
S
he has been an Ekka regular since the age of four but this year Emma Beau will be a star at the show she loves so much. The award-winning singer, who plays several instruments, will open and close the Nature in Bloom Natural Fibres Fashion Parades with a set that pays tribute to Queensland’s regional and rural communities. “I worked on this music and composed a lot of it over the top of the songs that I was given,” Emma says. “When you’re playing something you have composed partly yourself there is an extra expectation that you put on yourself to perform really well.” Picking up the violin at the age of eight, the now 22-year-old is a rising star on the Australian music scene, with her self-titled debut album reaching No.4 on the ARIA Country Music charts following its launch in June this year. Born in Brisbane but raised in Gympie, 160km north of the capital, Emma has already captured the attention of some of the country’s greatest performers – touring with the likes of Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson. But her passion for folk, fiddle and country chords comes from her humble upbringing, attending events such as the Gympie Music Muster, which she says influenced her unique sound. “I started at school and it’s just something that I kind of just stuck at.
Gympie was such a great place to foster my music career and learn.” Emma was approached by Ekka organisers after they spotted her performing in Tamworth, NSW. Playing at the Ekka is more than just another gig for the talented musician, who has fond memories of visiting the show with her family from a young age. “My first memory of the Ekka is walking in with my grandad and seeing this orange display they did of oranges in (outer) space. I loved it,” she said. At just 18, Emma moved to Sydney to pursue her music career and a year ago crowdsourced $13,500 to create her debut album, featuring hit songs Wild Heart and Leading Me Astray. “I asked my fans if they could come up with $12,000 and they came up with $13,500 which is amazing,” she says. Writing while on the road, the album is an ode to her upbringing and takes inspiration from artists such as Kasey Chambers and US artist Jim Lauderdale, who she had toured with. The musician, who also won the prestigious 2019 Queensland Music Award in the country category, is planning to take her album on a national tour and says the first gig will be “Brissy for sure”. An eye for talent Amanda Mitchell has made it her mission to help Brisbane’s rising stars of film and television gain a foothold in a tough industry Fiona Purdon
A
s soon as casting director Amanda Mitchell opened the doors of her West End office a year ago, the work flooded in. With a flurry of film and television projects happening in Queensland, the talent spotter – who is fast gaining a reputation as a force in the film industry – was immediately swept up in casting major productions including the Gold Coast film

Bloody Hell, starring Ben O’Toole, and season two of the Brisbane-made Harrow. “There are miraculous things happening up here,” says Amanda, who felt compelled to help local talents find quality roles in their home state. “There was no platform like this for Brisbane actors. In the past there was no choice. You had to move to Sydney and Melbourne and I knew there was a huge
range of actors here – an eclectic mix, some wonderful personalities and beautiful talent.” The Brisbane office is a satellite of Amanda’s headquarters in Sydney, where she lives most of the time with daughter Gracie, 8, and sound engineer husband Jules Wucherer. When in Brisbane, she stays with close friend, singer-songwriter Pauline Maudy, in the same New Farm
apartment they shared as university students. While Sydney has been home for the past decade, Amanda flies up to Brisbane “every second day’’ to her office at The Factory Acting Studio. Top of mind now is Never Too Late, filming in Adelaide. It was Amanda who cast Australian acting royalty Jacki Weaver as the lead. “Jacki is really busy and is one of the world’s most in-demand

actors; you hope an actor like Jacki connects to the story. It’s also about timing, availability and location. You have to see a project from their eyes … what would motivate an actor to do a project?’’ It’s a question Amanda often poses during an average day that might involve meeting with producers and directors to discuss projects, organising casting calls, chats with actors about upcoming roles,

checking availability for high-profile actors (such as Jacki), attending audition sessions, making callbacks, and being part of table-reads of scripts to ensure the cast is “gelling”. “There’s no typical day because it all depends on what stage of the casting process you are in,’’ Amanda says. “I might watch 80 audition tapes for one project. There might also be in-studio auditions. When you have seen hundreds of auditions, your eyes start to reach the point you have to stop. You have to re-set your barometer, otherwise you can go a bit loopy.’’ For Amanda, becoming a casting agent was an organic process. Born in Singapore, she moved to Brisbane as a teenager to study acting at QUT. But in the end, acting was not the ideal fit. “It was actually at my QUT showcase for all the agents. I was late for the call for my own showcase because I was so busy watching the scenes of other actors,’’ Amanda laughs. “I realised I enjoyed watching acting more than I enjoyed doing the acting.’’ But it was a subsequent casting call that was the decider. “Every bone in my body was telling me I didn’t want to do this acting job so I walked into the casting director’s room and said I don’t want to be an actor, I want to be in casting, I want to do what you do,’’ she says. Amanda was supported by Sydneybased industry doyens Kirsty McGregor and Christine King, with the latter offering to mentor Amanda full-time after their 2007 meeting. Amanda’s time with Christine led to her work on iconic films such as Red Dog (2011) and The Dressmaker (2015). “I went in as a casual worker and I stayed for the next eight years,” she says. “When you are casting you are looking for people who are likeable, who have that
willingness to play as well as that ability to take direction. “My preference is to find a fresh face, there is something exciting about that. When you see hundreds and hundreds of auditions, there is something that sticks out, something you call the X-factor. For one small role, I will still see up to 30 actors, just to make sure.’’ When Christine retired three years ago, Amanda decided to start her own business. One of her first jobs at her new Brisbane office was organising chemistry reads for Harrow, here in the city and also in Los Angeles with British star Ioan Gruffudd, who plays Dr Daniel Harrow. A “chemistry read” is industry lingo for testing to see if actors can make that onscreen connection. It was Amanda’s job to find Harrow’s new love interest, Dr Grace Molyneux, with Jolene Anderson (All Saints) impressing in the screen tests. “Harrow is a massive project. I met Ioan in Los Angeles and we had a shortlist of names because it’s so important to get the chemistry right,’’ she says. “It’s not just about actors and how good they are, it’s about a particular project and aligning yourself with a director’s taste … and the demand of the actual story,’’ she says. “Smaller roles are just as important as the bigger roles. A 50-word part can ruin the whole ensemble.” Amanda also cast Back of the Net (2019) for Brisbane producer Steve Jaggi and is working on Channel 10 drama series The Secret She Keeps, starring Jessica De Gouw (Arrow), Michael Dorman (Patriot) and Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey), currently filming in Sydney. “There is nothing like the feeling of finding the right person for the job,” she says. Soul sisters A personal tragedy prompted these young mums to reach out the hand of friendship to other women Taryn Davis
I
t’s time to get real about our “perfect lives” on social media to make way for a more authentic and connected community, according to the founders of Brisbane’s newest social club for women. Feeling isolated and struggling to come to terms with the death of a friend, young mums Ellen Woodgate and Hannah MacDonald poured a glass of rosé in early May and hatched a plan to build the community they wanted. They called it The Lady Counsel. “We were talking to a number of girls who all just seemed to be stuck in this place ... all just feeling isolated and alone,” says Hannah, 32, who lives in Chelmer. “We get stuck at home and think, ‘I’ll just cook the dinner, fold the washing, do the vacuuming’, instead of going to meet up and have that wine or coffee. Or you cancel plans and you end up on your phone looking at some 20-year-old influencer, thinking ‘her life is perfect’. “And it’s not perfect. No one’s life is perfect and you need to ditch that and get out and be with your friends who make you forget about your phone and your housework.” Last month Hannah and Ellen took action. They launched The Lady Counsel with a sold-out event at Hunter and Scout cafe at Graceville, featuring Brisbane watercolour artist and guest speaker Pip Spiro, raffles, and plenty of wine. More than 70 women attended, but missing in the crowd was the pair’s dear friend Ashley Gair, who passed away earlier in the year. “Ash suffered from diabetes and a whole
of string of illnesses throughout her young life but she always managed to see the positives or tell a good joke, even though she was probably having a far worse day than your ‘bad’ day,” Ellen says. “She really inspired us. She was only 31.” A few weeks after losing Ash, Hannah and Ellen, 32, sat down for that momentous glass of rosé and talked about how they knew so many women who were struggling with motherhood, pregnancy loss, grief, or taking care of ailing parents. “We felt like it wasn’t just us who needed some extra TLC in our lives, but so many women we know,” Ellen says. Now the pair is planning a bigger event in November, having lined up curvy model Bree Warren as guest speaker, with proceeds going to women’s charities. “Social media is how we get out there, but we want to emphasise that you should come to the events for old-school connection where you’re not looking at your phone, where you get to have a conversation and socialise, and also listen … we want to rebuild that lady village.” A self-proclaimed over-sharer, Ellen says by putting it all out there, she and Hannah are giving others licence to be vulnerable. Alicia Pyke Friday is cook-up day and the communal kitchen fills steadily as friends arrive with Eskies of cheese, charcuterie, olives and trays of baked vegetables Standing shoulder to shoulder with a group of women and rolling out dough for pizzas, I realise what’s missing from my life. It’s communal cooking. Pinching off handfuls of spongy dough and slapping them on to the floured stainless steel is just part of the appeal. When you spend most of your week tapping away at a keyboard, it’s strangely fulfilling to feel the dusty pizza base take shape with a few turns and stretches before leaning on the rolling pin to flatten and expand it. through the air like a sixth-generation Neapolitan cues the laughter. Being told to open your mouth to be fed a sliver of just-picked zucchini to taste its freshness creates trust – it’s delicious and yes, the yeast flakes sprinkled on top are a bit weird but somehow yummy too. Discussions about the benefits of warming the tomato sugo before applying it to the bases lets the more serious cooks weigh in. There’s no right or wrong, it’s just the way they do it around here. I’m visiting a dear mate in the Hunter Valley where she and her family are about to hand-build a house from Hempcrete
(a mix of hemp and lime). It’s part of a growing intentional community, all off the grid and solar powered. Friday is cook-up day and the communal kitchen fills steadily as friends arrive with Eskies of cheese, charcuterie, olives and trays of baked vegetables. My husband Guy is sitting out in the afternoon sunshine slicing capsicum and onions at a big wooden table. He has just helped with fetching firewood for the bonfire so he’s proving his versatility by mucking in with what we in the kitchen have been joking is women’s work. I know he’s doing it for the snacks.
Women’s work, I’m quickly learning, comes with slices of spicy ginger cake – a vegan recipe apparently – and mugs of tea. The kids know this too. It’s the last day of school holidays and a dozen or so little people are running around, arguing over who’s next to ride one of the bikes and showing off the sticks they’ve found. Occasionally they appear, wanting a grown-up to settle some dispute, and leave with a cookie. Warm, sweet and truly the heart of this collective space, things are pretty special in the kitchen where the women are.

Lovely jubbly Jamie Oliver’s financial woes aside, it’s business as usual at the British chef’s namesake eatery in the city RESTAURANT Tony Harper The Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group hit the wall in Australia a little over a year ago, closing some branches, selling others. The Brisbane branch of Jamie’s Italian remains open, now owned by the Hallmark Group, which also bought venues in Perth, Sydney and Adelaide. And Jamie himself is still on the team, overseeing menu development and food quality from afar. There’s an almost intangible bynumbers quality to every franchise or chain of restaurants I’ve ever entered (the McDonald’s factor in varying degrees) and Jamie’s has it, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Here it feels rote – the service, the menu, the looks – but at the same time cleverly, carefully so. It’s a good package. Not many weeks ago I took a mate to a chain-Italian and it was woeful. I took him along to Jamie’s and I kind of reclaimed my status as a decent lunch provider. It feels like you are being processed as diners, but it’s a thoroughly enjoyable ride. The drinks list is decent: nothing amazing, nothing terrible and nothing intriguing. There’s a ground-level pecorino, but no fiano, nero or super Tuscan. There is Aussie nebbiolo, and plenty of non-Italian stuff. And it has a good, thoughtful array of smaller-producer Australian and Italian wines, pitched nicely to the broaddemographic, inner- city audience. Beers ... Stone and Wood. Nice! It’s a perfect list for the venue. If there’s a glitch in our experience, it’s timing. We order a few small and a couple of large dishes to share. Then wait ... and wait ... and wait. And everything – just a moment before we stick our hands up and

whinge – arrives. Everything. All at once. Crowded, busy table. Come on people, feed it to us in bits and bobs, as it hits the pass, so it’s fresh and fun, and we can graze. Crab bruschetta, for example, could be excellent, but my bet is a long wait at the pass (while all the other things are cooking) dumbs it a little – sourdough a tad soggy, everything a bit limp. But the rest is pretty good food, some of it excellent.
The best is a pasta dish with slowcooked lamb ragu ($32) in biggish ravioli squares – more silky than al dente. But here’s a confession – I like my pasta silky and there’s plenty of other stuff to be crunched. With tiny adornments of pancetta and a puddle of sage butter, it’s bang-on and seriously delicious. There’s a sizeable vegetarian menu from which we sample roasted “squash” salad (in Aussie terms, that’s butternut
pumpkin, $20) with rocket, beetroot, nuts and a few other bits. Pork chop ($32) comes with bagna cauda (garlic and anchovies) and kohlrabi. And arancini ($15 for three) are good but not remarkable. The whole Jamie’s package is good: well above expectation. It serves fresh, tasty Italian – nothing terribly thought provoking or groundbreaking, but lighter, brighter and better than a thousand other Italian joints.

RECIPE
Comfort zone Chilly nights are made for this family favourite that evokes treasured memories for chef Alastair McLeod By the age of eight, I could pull a pretty good pint of Guinness. I needed to stand on a stool and use all my weight to pull down the pump to release the liquid into the dimpled pint glass. A large slice of my childhood was spent at my Daddy’s pub, The Travellers Rest, in Derriaghy, outside Belfast. My job was to sort the empty bottles into crates and my wages was lunch in the lounge bar – battered cod and chips, a ploughman’s lunch or a flaky chicken pie with vinegary marrowfat peas. If you make my chicken and leek pie, I’ll get the drinks.
CHICKEN AND LEEK PIE Ingredients 275ml white wine 2 carrots, peeled and cut into 3mm angled slices 1 bay leaf A few sprigs of thyme Sea salt and freshly milled pepper Breasts and legs from a 1kg chicken, removed from carcass 2 leeks, trimmed, halved lengthways and cut into 1cm pieces Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 225g puff pastry Flour for dusting 1 egg, beaten 1tbs grated parmesan
Method Preheat oven to 200C. Pour white wine into a medium pot, along with the carrots, bay, thyme and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer then cover and cook gently for five minutes. Add the chicken pieces and leeks to the pot and cook for a further 10 mins. Next, drain the chicken and vegetables, reserving the liquid. Pour liquid back into the pan, bring it to the boil and reduce to about 2tbs. Remove skin from chicken pieces, remove thigh and leg bones
and cut all meat into bite-sized pieces. Stir the cheese sauce into the white wine, simmer, and stir in chicken, carrots and leeks. Pour into pie vessels. Cut a 12cm puff pastry round and a 1cm strip that will fit around edge of individual pie dishes. Moisten the edge of the dish with water and press the strip of pastry around the rim. Dampen the strip and carefully lift the pastry lid over the top, pressing firmly to seal. Brush pastry with beaten egg, sprinkle with parmesan and bake for 20 minutes. Serves 5
CHEESE SAUCE Ingredients 275ml milk 20g flour 20g butter Pinch Aleppo pepper 25g cheddar 10g parmesan Sea salt and freshly milled pepper
Method Place milk, flour, butter and pepper into a medium saucepan and place over a gentle heat. Whisk gently until they simmer, then whisk continually for 5 mins. Add cheeses and whisk again until melted. Season to taste.

f you’d told her a year ago she’d be starring in a Harry Potter inspired production, Angelina Thomson would have laughed. Back then the 23-year-old performer had no great interest in wizards and had certainly never read a book about them – not even J.K Rowling’s bestsellers. But when she sat in the audience of comedy Puffs the Play, she was hooked. The Off-Broadway smash hit, while not affiliated with the Harry Potter monolith, features plenty of thinly veiled references to the boy wizard’s magical universe. This time though, it is the dedicated, hard working and loyal Hufflepuffs (Puffs)
– one of the four houses students are sorted into at Hogwarts – who step into the spotlight. Angelina says she’s looking forward to taking the stage as magical misfit Megan Jones when the show opens at Brisbane Powerhouse later this month. The rising star, who graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University in 2016, recently made her professional debut in the Australian ensemble cast of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. But she’s never appeared in anything like Puffs. “It’s a completely different experience for me because it’s not a musical; it’s pure
scenes,” she tells Brisbane News. “There is no singing or dancing, which I do miss, but it means I get to 100 per cent focus on my acting so it’s really good from that perspective. It’s been a real learning experience and one I’m super grateful for.” Angelina, who has also performed in Opera Australia’s production of West Side Story on Sydney Harbour as Consuelo, was keen to get involved in Puffs because it highlights “life as an underdog”. “That concept really appealed to me,” she says. “Although I was never a Harry Potter fan, and didn’t really know much about all that, I loved the core underdog theme. The character of Megan is a little bit
insecure and doesn’t really know herself yet so she goes on a journey through the play trying to find out where she fits, before she eventually realises she is a Puff after all. “She’s quite different from me in a lot of senses, but I think everyone goes through that phase in life of being a bit insecure and trying to fit in somewhere so it’s quite relatable to everyone.” Angelina grew up on the Gold Coast but moved to Sydney in 2017 to be better placed for auditions. A newcomer to the industry, she says she’s often her own worst enemy when it comes to trying out for roles. “It’s such a competitive industry and I think I often psych myself out of getting parts. But it’s also the best industry to be working in and I’m really lucky to have some great friends and mentors who have been actors for a lot longer than me, and they are a super source of support when I need it.” Puffs the Play, Brisbane Powerhouse, New Farm, Aug 23-Sep 15, from $49.90. brisbanepowerhouse.org

FILM
FIGHTING WORDS ... Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham have little to show for all their on-screen bickering.
PALM BEACH (M) hhkjj Director Rachel Ward Starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, Richard E. Grant
FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW (M) hhkjj Director David Leitch Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba The main problem with this Fast & Furious spin-off, which is basically a custom vehicle for outsized action hero Dwayne Johnson and his onscreen nemesis Jason Statham, is the chest-thumping one-upmanship that passes for a relationship between their respective characters. Riggs and Murtaugh (Lethal Weapon), Lee and Carter (Rush Hour) Gamble and Hoitz (The Other Guys) … fractious partnerships are a buddy cop staple. But compared to, say, Stuber, in which the combative chemistry between Dave Bautista’s grizzled detective and Kumail Nanjiani’s emotionally sensitive Uber driver oiled the wheels of a subgenre that has been well and truly flogged, Hobbs & Shaw rattles along like an old banger. After Johnson’s much-publicised feud with Fast & Furious co-star Vin Diesel, a franchise detour
probably seemed like a good idea for all concerned. But while Johnson’s hulking lawman, Luke Hobbs, and Statham’s disgraced military operative, Deckard Shaw, spiced up the action satisfactorily as occasional sparring partners, their alpha male bickering grates over the course of an entire feature film. Vanessa Kirby (best known as Princess Margaret in Netflix’s The Crown) provides some welcome relief each time she appears on the screen as arse-kicking MI6 field agent Hattie – even if the character’s relationships with both men (one would-be lover, one brother) feel a little forced. When Hattie injects herself with an apocalyptic virus in order to save it falling into the wrong hands, Hobbs and Shaw must learn to work together in order to save the planet – as well as the woman they both love. Family plays a big part in Hobbs & Shaw, which also involves Johnson’s character reconciling with his estranged brother (Cliff Curtis) when he basically runs out of any other options. Pursued by a mysterious and well-
heeled scientific organisation that wants to rid the world of “human weakness” – using chemical weapons – the trio can only solve the problem if they go off grid. And so Hobbs takes them back to Samoa, where his extended family lives. This gives the filmmakers an excuse to stage a novelty showdown using traditional clubs and spears. As Brixton Lore, a rogue MI6 agent who is part man, part machine, Idris Elba lends emotional grunt to what might otherwise have been a rather stereotypical villain. Hobbs & Shaw’s action sequences are as professionally choreographed as one would expect from Brad Pitt’s former stunt double, David Leitch, who has gone on to direct Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2. And there are enough preposterous car stunts to meet the expectations of long-time franchise fans – culminating in a scene in which Hobbs stops a helicopter from taking off, basically with his bare hands. A pedal-to-the-metal action adventure – with very little under the hood.
The trouble with a picture postcard backdrop like Sydney’s Northern Beaches, is that it can be rather distracting – especially in moments of high drama. Cinematographer Bonnie Elliott shoots the hell out of the iconic location in this subtropical Big Chill about a bunch of Baby Boomers who are reunited for a significant birthday. Having sold his extraordinarily successful T-shirt business for an eye-watering amount of money, 70-year-old Frank (Bryan Brown, pictured above with Richard E. Grant, Greta Scacchi and Heather Mitchell) has lost his purpose, and found antidepressants. His wife, Charlotte (Scacchi), is still recovering, emotionally, from a mastectomy. In short, Frank is suffering from a severe case of affluenza. His biggest worry, now that Charlotte has the all-clear, is a chimney that interrupts his view of the coast – and Billy, Grant’s bitter rock star-turned-jingle writer, never misses an opportunity to needle him about it. There is much to enjoy about actor-turned-director Rachel Ward’s second feature – not least the relaxed, onscreen relationship between the various actors, some of whom, such as Brown and Sam Neill, have known each other for the best part of 40 years. Scacchi earths the film as the warm, practical matriarch who can whip up a banquet at a moment’s notice. Broad in its humour, conscientiously commercial in its appeal, and with one eye firmly on the international market, Palm Beach is a very different proposition to Ward’s directorial debut, the tough and uncompromising outback drama Beautiful Kate. The golden age In a colourful new memoir, Brisbane News columnist Phil Brown recalls his boyhood in Hong Kong
I
t was long ago and far away. That’s how a good story starts, isn’t it? It’s not quite how I begin my memoir about Hong Kong, however. Those who know me well won’t be surprised to learn that the book begins and ends at The Peninsula Hong Kong, the hotel I describe in my book, The Kowloon Kid, as “my spiritual home”. And I’m only half-joking. The Peninsula is a theatre, its lobby a stage where the main players were for me, my father, and his friends and the occasional movie star who turned up there in the 1960s. The famous lobby of “The Pen” was the centre of our social life and my dad, Edward John Brown – Ted to his mates – held court there every day.
16 BRISBANE NEWS August 7-13, 2019
The hotel, which crowns Kowloon Peninsula, is a touchstone for me, a place still redolent of old Hong Kong, something I hanker for and am constantly trying to rekindle on my trips back to the former British colony that was once home. A city that is being rocked by protests, as I write, by people who feel that it should remain independent despite it being a Special Administrative Region of China. (The irony is it was never independent as a British colony but it was peaceful and prosperous). I have been banging on about my love of Hong Kong for decades and you, dear readers, will have caught glimpses of my life in Hong Kong through my weekly column in Brisbane News. But now I have
got it out of my system by writing a book about it. Which, I should warn you, probably won’t stop me from going on about it again in future. The Kowloon Kid, which is subtitled A Hong Kong Childhood, is the story of our family life in Hong Kong, where we lived between 1963 and 1970, and it tells of a life of privilege in one of the most exotic cities on the planet. It also tells the stories of characters who drifted in and out of our lives and of friendships. In one chapter I write about the cute kid from across the road who would one day go on to be a rock star, and would one day also die a tragic death in a Sydney hotel. I’m referring to Michael Hutchence, of course. He and his tearaway little brother

Rhett lived across the road from us in leafy, stately Kowloon Tong, the suburb where movie stars such as Bruce Lee and Nancy Kwan also resided. It’s poignant to look back at photos of Michael now and ironic to recall that in those days only one of us had been in a rock band, and it wasn’t him. I was a pop mad kid and had been a member of a little outfit called The Sidetracks whose moment of glory was a concert at Kowloon Junior School in 1967 on the eve of the Summer of Love, a summer that would rock Hong Kong with a communist insurrection that is largely forgotten today. Like most expats who lived in Hong Kong for a time, I am fascinated by it and I look back on a childhood that was rather

There is a worldwide diaspora of people like me who can never forget the Pearl of the Orient special. As Hong Kong author Nury Vittachi writes in his book Hong Kong: The City of Dreams – “You can leave Hong Kong, but it will never leave you”. The numerous Hong Kong expat Facebook groups I am a member of are testament to that, and there is a worldwide
diaspora of people like me who can never forget the city that was once known as the Pearl of the Orient. But The Kowloon Kid is not just my story. It all begins with my English grandfather, Lord Roberts Brown. He was not an aristocrat, however. That was just what his working class parents named him back in London. It was a name that would come in handy in Shanghai, and later, Hong Kong in the 1930s. He was a PoW in Hong Kong under the Japanese Occupation during World War II. My father grew up in Hong Kong too, spending the war years in Australia, going on to fight for the Australians in Borneo. In the mid-1940s, the Browns returned
to Hong Kong, later bringing their construction company to Australia in the 1950s, to escape communism. But the siren lure was too much for my father and in 1963 he went back. He phoned my mother, back in Maitland, NSW, shortly after that and told her to pack up because we were moving to Hong Kong. And so my adventure began. As I said, it was long ago and far away but the memories are still fresh and they are with me every day. The Underwood house was created for dual-living to suit the family’s unique living arrangement
I
t wasn’t all that long ago that multigenerational living was the rule rather than the exception. Although three generations residing together might not be as common these days, Mohammed and Fatema couldn’t be happier living under the same roof with Mohammed’s parents Ebrahim and Farida. With their two young children soaking up the love of their parents and grandparents on a daily basis, it’s an arrangement that has multiple perks for everyone, including the biggest of all for Mohammed and Fatema. “Live-in babysitters!” Mohammed laughs. “But on a serious note, having my parents close by means we can always be sure that they are OK as they get older. They also get to spend so much time with their grandchildren, which they love.” Designed by BVN Architecture, the Underwood house was created for dualliving to suit the family’s unique living arrangement. The two complete residences, each with their own kitchen, living rooms and bathrooms, are housed under the one roof, with a shared entrance and atrium in the middle featuring giant palms. Like the tree of life represents family, growth, strength and peace, the palms are symbolic of the things that mean the most. Darren James Interiors was given the challenging task of creating a distinct sense of style in each dwelling while maintaining consistency in materiality across the building. “We approached this by considering each of the homes as a separate project that reflected the individual style and taste of the inhabitants but worked cohesively together,” Darren says. While Mohammed and Fatema wanted a fresh and modern feel, Ebrahim and Farida were drawn to a much richer and more mature style. To meet the first brief, colour, natural CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

SPACE DIVIDE ... Ebrahim and Farida favoured a mature style (left); while the younger couple opted for textures that accentuated a modern, Australian aesthetic (above).
textures and fibres were used in the young couple’s home working towards a modern, Australian aesthetic that reflected the bush setting outlook. Quirky and youthful fabrics, relaxed natural weaves, linen-look window treatments and natural grass cloth-look wallpaper combined to achieve the look. In the living room, dark joinery was balanced with tan leather upholstery, which also allowed for extra seating, while modern wall mounted planters brought a natural touch of greenery. Striking paintings by Australian artist Prudence Caroline also added colour to the space. In Ebrahim and Farida’s home, a jewellery box provided inspiration for the
interiors using dark timbers, exotic patterns and gold accents. The colour selections began with the green velvet dining chairs they’d purchased previously with burgundy, mustard, navy and robin egg blue added to the mix. One of many much-loved family rugs was framed and hung in the stairwell while downlights were removed from the dining room, and brass and black pendants added to create a sense of drama. In the communal area, the two styles were carefully brought together. “In this space we used a modern rug, accessories and art to complement Mohammed and Fatema’s home but deep, rich colours with gold detailing to complement Ebrahim and Farida’s home,” Darren says. When the families want privacy, they simply close off the internal doors and retreat to their own space, but more often than not the doors remain open, allowing the children to roam freely between the two dwellings. “We often entertain and events can range from anywhere between five people and 50. The flexibility of the layout makes catering for any occasion very easy,” Mohammed says. Just like finding a babysitter.

LAST WORD
Phil Brown I saw The Eagles there once and that was pretty cool. Also Lou Reed. He was in his difficult period ... That difficult period lasted for decades I was having flashbacks to the old days at Festival Hall the other day. The opening of The Fortitude Music Hall in Fortitude Valley made everyone feel a bit nostalgic and spurred memories of gigs back in the day. My colleague Matt Connors wrote a story about that for The Courier-Mail and did a call-out for people’s recollections and I had a few, which I shared, even though I didn’t live in Brisbane in those days. I spent my teenage years on the Gold Coast and we Gold Coast surfies eschewed Brisbane, to put it mildly. You wouldn’t catch us dead here and when “Brissos” turned up at our local surf break we would hound them from the water. Nice huh?
But we did go to Brisbane for concerts at Festival Hall and I recall a few beauties. I saw The Eagles there once and that was pretty cool. Also Lou Reed. He was in his difficult period at that stage. That difficult period lasted for decades. But we were fans and he could do no wrong although he did behave badly. At the concert we saw in the mid-to late1970s, a young female fan rushed up to the stage to present him with a bunch of flowers which he took, then threw them back in her face. What a sweetheart. I went with some guys from school who were Lou Reed diehards and they had a little cassette recorder in their laps taping the whole thing but when it was played
back later all you could hear was them oohhing and aahhhing and occasionally singing along. Driving up from the Coast for that concert we passed a carload of friends, although we couldn’t see them clearly. We recognised the car but it was so full of smoke that no one was clearly visible. Like I said, it was the ’70s. Possibly my favourite concert of all at Festival Hall was another mid ’70s gig, this one by the late great Frank Zappa. His album Over-Nite Sensation was one of our favourites and we worshipped Frank and went to Festival Hall to pay homage. We sat down the front near the speakers and our heads were nearly blown off by the
noise but it was fantastic. As we came out of the concert later a friend spotted Frank emerging from a side door and rushed towards him shouting, “Mr Zappa! Mr Zappa!” The American rock star looked around, startled, jumped into a limo and sped off. After one concert at Festival Hall we couldn’t remember where we had parked my station wagon and we wandered around the city for half an hour before we located it. By then we had lost one of our party but eventually we found him too. He was sitting up in a tree in Albert St, which is ironic considering the fact that he was actually off his tree. Like I said, it was the ’70s.

The couple oversaw an 18-month transformation led by award-winning design practice AAD and Wrightson Stewart Interior Design. “It was built in 1913 and when we saw it, we just loved its location and we love old
Queenslanders,” Brett says. “They (Queenslander-style houses) have so much history and we wanted to see how it would come up. “It is by far the largest scale renovation we have ever done.” Spread over two vast levels, there are three bedrooms upstairs, including a main suite with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. There is also an office with built-in library, a family room, a gallery walk overlooking a void, and the open-plan living, dining room and kitchen with a butler’s pantry. The dining room opens out to a deck. Downstairs, there are two further bedrooms, another full kitchen, a bathroom and a combined living and

dining area, which could easily be used as self-contained accommodation. The kitchen on this level also opens to an outdoor dining deck overlooking the pool, grassed area and courtyard. There is also a laundry, and a four-car garage on the lower level. Other features include an outdoor bar with barbecue, a sink and fridge, spotted gum timber and ceilings and silver travertine stone flooring, a wine cellar, airconditioning, plush carpets, built-in storage and stone feature walls.
Inner-city charm Newly constructed and blending traditional Queenslander and contemporary elements, this fourbedroom house offers an impressive four levels of stylish living. Karinya sits just a short walk from the CBD, and boasts a charming facade featuring roof gables and white iron fretwork on the dual balconies. The main living hub sits on the entry level of the house, with light-filled lounge and dining spaces opening via floor-toceiling glass bi-fold doors to a tiled terrace. Interior decor features include polished Blackbutt timber flooring, large windows and a neutral colour palette, and the lounge room has custom cabinetry and a remote-controlled fireplace. Kitchen highlights include Caesarstone benchtops, an island breakfast bar, a suite of integrated stainless steel Smeg appliances, and a wine fridge. Three bedrooms with dark carpets are on the second level of the residence, including the main suite which features a luxury dressing room with dedicated shoe racks and pull-down hanging rails, as well as an ensuite with floor-to-ceiling tiles and
an oversized shower. The other two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and French doors that open out to a northfacing balcony. Extending across the top level is the fourth bedroom, with its own ensuite, a raked ceiling and beautiful dormer windows. Polished floors lead down to the basement level, featuring a 400-bottle wine cellar and a recreation room with a heated, polished concrete floor.

Prestige position This distinct Tudor-style home has been meticulously renovated and modernised to create a graceful fusion of traditional entertaining spaces and modern family functionality. Entering on the ground floor of the residence, multiple living areas set the tone for entertaining and family living. Enjoying a peaceful, elevated position within a dress circle location, the commanding residence benefits from northeast district outlooks and hillside breezes. On the upper level, the main bedroom includes a walk-in wardrobe, study nook and a stone ensuite, along with sensational views. Another four bedrooms with builtin wardrobes are on the upstairs level, serviced by an ensuite and a separate bathroom. Features on the lower level include crafted ornate ceilings, a custom stonefeature fireplace, and a kitchen with Gaggenau appliances and a butler’s pantry. There’s also a dedicated rumpus room, remote-controlled blinds, a climatecontrolled wine cellar, an alarm system and a bar nook.
Outside, the property includes an irrigation system and 33,000L water tanks, along with a pool with electric heating. “The sellers have bought elsewhere and this much-loved family home must be sold,” Grace & Keenan marketing agent Vaughan Keenan says. “It’s located in prestigious Hamilton Hill, and only a stone’s throw to the Riverside walk, ferry terminal, Racecourse Rd precinct and all within 4km to the CBD.”

REAL ESTATE SINCE 1888
Family appeal When Roger and Marilyn Tonks first bought their block of land at Cornubia 40 years ago it felt like a bush escape. There was little around the area when the couple secured the 3.52ha of land on which to build their dream home. Since then, both the suburb and that home have changed substantially. Now, there are plenty of other houses in the area and nearby shopping centres, golf clubs and country clubs. “It was really just a bush block when we bought it,” Roger says. Marilyn says their small home grew as their family did. “We started with a small house when we were a young married couple, we did not have a lot and then we did a couple of extensions over the years,” she says. Those extensions turned the original house into the modern, large family home it is today. Inside the house, the kitchen has black granite benchtops, a Gaggenau induction cooktop, a Miele oven and built-in combination microwave oven as well as a Miele dishwasher. This area overlooks the split-level dining room which has a traditional fireplace. The dining room
leads to a lounge room which has a marble-topped bar and large glass windows and doors which offer panoramic views of the surrounding bush. The main bedroom has his-and-her walk-in wardrobes, electric remotecontrolled curtains and an ensuite with an Apaiser solar custom freestanding bathtub. Another of the bedrooms has a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite, while the remaining two bedrooms all have built-in wardrobes.

Apartment luxury Former BRW rich-lister James Rice and his wife Elise are selling their spectacular skyhome in the Brisbane CBD. Designed by award-winning architect Justin O’Neill, the sprawling 670sq m luxury apartment spans two levels. “As soon as we exited the lift, within 5m of walking into the apartment, we knew we wanted it,” Elise says. “The views, the design, the finishes and the quality were just spectacular.” The opulent apartment at New Farm has some of the best views in Brisbane, and a 670sq m interior that is packed with modern inclusions. The extravagance begins as soon as you exit the private lift, which opens out on to a floor plan that includes walls of glass and Travertine stone floors. The main bedroom has an oversized walk-in wardrobe with sensor lighting, a built-in entertainment unit and a largerthan-life ensuite with spectacular views that can be enjoyed from the circular stone bath. Also on the first floor is a second living room, an ideal media room, the kitchen, dining and main living area, all of which
opens on to an outdoor area, and a bar and wine cellar. Other notable features of the stunning apartment include a powder room on the first level, a dedicated laundry on the second level and a secure garage with space for up to six vehicles. “The six-car garage is also very rare in an apartment complex,” Elise says. “We also enjoyed being in such a boutique apartment building with only 11 apartments.”
