JOLLY BIG CHRISTMAS SALE Open every day until Christmas! Trees, Lights, Trim, Gifts, Decorations EVERYTHING 50% OFF!
This week... Christmas is nothing without tradition and, in the land of Brisbane News, that includes Alastair McLeod’s annual festive feast of recipes (P10). This year, aided by star stylist-photographer Miranda Porter, our resident chef has us drooling over Moreton Bay bug cocktail salad; roast turkey (with all the trimmings, of course); and a cheeky little caramel poached meringue with spiced apricots. They are all divine dishes and, more importantly, totally doable for home cooks, each designed to bring friends and family together over plates of plenty. Ah food, glorious food.

Play it again After 20 years on the tennis circuit, Sam Stosur is back where it all began for the Brisbane International Fiona Purdon
Osaka, who beat Serena in this year’s US Open final; 2017 US Open winner American Sloane Stephens; this year’s Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova; and 2017 French Open title winner Jelena Ostapenko. Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray headline the men’s draw. “It’s very exciting because the tournament is so strong,” Sam says. “We play in Pat Rafter Arena, which is such an intimate setting, and fans are unusually close to the action. “It’s a really nice feeling to know there are people in the stadium who want to see me do well. I’ve played some good tennis before in Brisbane, and have gone deep and far into the week.” Next year marks Sam’s 20th year on the circuit, and in that time, she has won $17,783,962, which puts her 19th in the all-time earnings for female tennis players. “I never played tennis for the money – I loved it right from the start, when I first had a racquet in my hand. I could never get enough,” she says. Currently ranked No.73, Sam still enjoys the competition, and travelling to exotic cities and trying new restaurants. And while Melbourne is her home base, she spends more than 300 days a year travelling. “Retirement is inevitable one day, but I’m not putting a date on it,” she says. “I’m very lucky to do what I do, and you can make it as good or as bad as you want. “I couldn’t imagine retiring and not being involved in tennis in some way, I love the game so much.”
B
risbane holds a special place in Sam Stosur’s heart. It’s where, as a teenager, the tennis ace honed her skills to take on the world’s best. Sam would spend dozens of hours every week travelling from her Gold Coast home to Brisbane for coaching and tournaments. “It became a full-family thing, taking me up the highway every day after school,” she says. “Most of the tournaments I played were in Brisbane, so most weekends I was up there playing somewhere.” Now Sam, 34, returns to her old stomping ground this month for the hotly contested Brisbane International. The competition has seen her reunite with childhood coach Nick Watkins, who has been guiding her in the past month. She credits Watkins and her other Brisbane coach Ian Brady for helping her develop her winning technique. “Ian taught me how to do the kick serve, which has been instrumental. Then Nick looked after me and worked further on my serve. It was a really good time for my tennis. Nick shaped me as a player and as a person. He really believed in me,” she says. It was her deadly kick serve that helped the one-time world No.4 beat Serena Williams in the 2011 US Open. “Serena doesn’t like my serves. They have always been a weapon for me,” Sam says. “I played exceptionally well that day. I 100 per cent believed I could win, and everything fell into place.” A wildcard entry in the 2019 Brisbane International, Sam is joined by four other grand-slam champions in the star-studded women’s draw. They include Japan’s Naomi

COVER STORY
Tropical tidings Shake up tradition with a true blue festive feast, says Alastair McLeod
O
ur Christmas traditions are about family with the menu a blend of northern hemisphere traditions and quintessentially Queensland qualities. Our mounds of fresh prawns, pavlova and poolside barbecues make relatives back in the old country green with envy. This entree is really a prawn cocktail tossed in the air and caught differently. In the heat of summer, there are those who eschew the traditional roast dinner yet will happily stand over a barbecue for an hour. For this reason, I will always have a traditional roast turkey, ham or pork with all the trimmings. As for dessert, it’s apricot pavlova in all but name. As we finish 2018, let me leave you with an Irish proverb about the value of cheer. Happy Christmas, Alastair. x May you have walls for the wind, And a roof for the rain, And drinks beside the fire, Laughter to cheer you, And those you love near you, And all that your heart may desire. Alastair McLeod is chef-owner of Al’FreshCo. alfreshco.com.au Styling and photography: Miranda Porter

CARAMEL POACHED MERINGUE, SPICED APRICOTS MERINGUE 100g egg whites 300g caster sugar
SPICED APRICOTS 200g caster sugar 500ml water 1 tsp vanilla paste 2 cinnamon sticks 2 star anise 8 apricots, halved and stoned
METHOD Preheat oven to 110C. Whisk egg whites in a stand mixer until soft peaks form. Add 100g of the sugar in three lots, whisking well with each addition.
Continue to whisk until sugar dissolves and the mixture has the consistency of thick cream. Place in a piping bag and pipe into greased plastic dariole moulds. Cook in a high sided tray with boiling water half way up the sides. Bake for 20 mins or until lightly set. Remove from water bath, allow to cool to room temp. To make the caramel, place remaining 200g of sugar in a small pot over medium heat. Continue to cook until the sugar melts and forms a caramel. Pour onto a lined baking sheet and spread it nice and thin with a spatula. Before its sets, stamp out 10cm circles. Allow to set then lift off rounds and store in an airtight tub until required.
For the spiced apricots, place sugar and water in a large heavy-based saucepan over medium heat. Dissolve sugar in water. Once dissolved add vanilla and spices and bring to a gentle simmer for 15 mins. Place apricots into syrup and simmer for 3 mins then remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Cut each apricot half in two. When ready to serve, place poached meringues on plates and set a caramel disc on each. Light a blowtorch and gently wave it back and forth over the caramel until it melts over the meringue. Arrange apricots around and spoon over a little of the cooking liquor. Serves 6

FEATURE STORY
Hidden oasis Potted charms are a growing business for this green thumb whose inner-city paradise attracts a devoted following Cassandra Houghton Andrea Fitzpatrick knows a thing or two about planting seeds; both literal seeds and the figurative, sprout-into-an-idea kind that flourish into a thriving business. From a 180sq m dirt patch in an industrial Albion street in 2013, the then-novice created a garden to rival any fairytale’s. A run-of-the-mill plant shop, Botanick is not. “If someone had said to me, ‘Here’s a tiny patch of land – oh, and it floods regularly and you can’t get your car through’, I would have said, ‘No way, we’re not doing it’,” Andrea, 58, laughs. “But, you know, things evolve.” We’re sitting on wrought-iron chairs at 9am amid verdant ferns and kaleidoscopic succulents. Above our heads, South American Rhipsalis tendrils drape over Danish Berg pots. The dirt has long since been paved over. It feels unusually humid, which Andrea 14 BRISBANE NEWS December 12-18, 2018
attributes to Botanick’s own microclimate. “This spot here is the hottest part of the site because the western sun just hits that wall and reflects the heat, so we ended up putting a roof over it,” she says. “Because we’re surrounded by high walls, it has become a real little microclimate, and it gets very hot. Actually, at the beginning it was a bit like buying a house; sometimes you need to live with a site to see where the sun comes up and where the hottest parts are.” More than a nursery, this backstreet haven – adjacent to the now-closed Vieille Branche creative space in Fox St – will move to new premises over the New Year and is due to open on February 1. Within walking distance, Botanick’s new home will be a 250sq m plot on Pedder St, which is also where Andrea’s husband, Gary, works, importing Danish tapware for laboratories.
“Botanick won’t be in the fancy part of the street – just a warehouse – but it will evolve into something, much like it did here,” Andrea says. “I had no real plans with this place either – I just try to get things that I would like to have at home, and things that aren’t everywhere else. Someone said the other day that it’s just like his grandmother’s garden. I think when people say that – and I get that a lot – they mean I haven’t got rows and rows of the same thing.” Starting a business from a passion, with no plans or models for guidance, is a risky move. Andrea spent 15 years working in her father’s pharmacy, enjoying the flexibility it gave her as a mother to her three daughters, when the desire for a life change struck. She had always had a love of gardening, and decided to do something about it. “People come here and say, ‘You’re so lucky to work in a place like this’, but you create your own luck, I think,” she says. “When my father retired and the girls went on to do their own thing, I thought, ‘Right, now I’m going to do what I want to do’.” Admiration for artist gardeners such as Piet Oudolf, of New York City’s High Line fame, gave her inspiration, while formal studies in horticulture and landscape design helped turn Botanick into a reality. The growers who supply her shop are mostly local and know what she likes, including her accountant brother, who

supplies her with cacti. “People these days – especially those who live in units and smaller spaces – they want something green in their home, but they don’t want to be a slave to it ... they want to go on a holiday and come back and see it’s still alive,” Andrea says as we wander among the haphazard greenery. “There’s always a succulent that can fulfil those requirements. The other thing people love at the moment are indoor plants – especially the trailing plants – they’re all the rage. It’s nice that they’re fashionable.” And does she have any favourites? “No – I love them all,” she replies. “Though I guess at the moment I really like hoyas – they’re subtropical. Some come from Queensland and others here are from Hawaii, and they provide the

most beautiful flowers. “The other things I really like are Rhipsalis. They’re used to growing under a rainforest canopy so they’re fantastic because people are looking for something inside that is easy to look after.” Andrea’s passion for plants is contagious; her now-grown daughters – Jessica, an admin clerk; Emily, an accountant; and Hannah, an architecture graduate – have a love of gardening as well. Her green thumb also extends to her own home in Wooloowin, a Queenslander surrounded by manicured foliage and complete with a rooftop garden. For those inspired by Botanick’s garden of Eden, Andrea’s one piece of advice is to plant flowers that encourage bees and other insects, and therefore birds. “If you buy one plant a month that’s in flower, it means you’ll have something in flower in your garden every month of the year,” she says. “Not only does it make your garden look good but it means the bees and the insects have something all through the year too. And then the insects encourage the birds … it’s a whole cycle.” Part of Botanick’s appeal is the way Andrea has let her plants grow whichever way they like, cluttered among the Danish pots and decorative pieces. Like many before me, I succumb to its charm, leaving with a beautiful, trailing Rhipsalis in my novice hands. BRISBANE NEWS December 12-18, 2018 15

Meet the designer who transforms Myer’s city shopfront into a Christmas wonderland
Story time Emma Schafer
16 BRISBANE NEWS December 12-18, 2018
John Kerr isn’t Santa Claus, but he brings his own special magic to Myer Christmas windows in Brisbane and Melbourne each year. The Melbourne-based creative marks his 25th Christmas installation this year, with displays inspired by Rebecca Dautremer’s illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Do you remember your first visit to the Myer Christmas windows? Absolutely! And it’s the reason why I started Stage One Productions 30 years ago and why I’m still creating the Christmas windows today, 25 years later. I clearly recall visiting the windows with Mum and Dad on a warm Melbourne night when I was 12 years old. I was so overcome by what I saw that I just knew I had to become part of it, and that single experience has driven me ever since. What’s been your favourite display? The Nutcracker in 2010 has always stood out. The story and the characters take me back to my childhood and creating dioramas in shoeboxes. Also Olivia helps with Christmas in 2009 – based on the Ian Falconer book by the same name featuring an enthusiastic young pig named Olivia. That set of windows was the most simplistic as far as design goes, which means they were the most challenging. In
a busy window it’s easier to hide something that’s not quite right. Tells us about this year’s windows ... I was impressed with the style and detail in Rebecca Dautremer’s illustrations in Alice in Wonderland. The pictures made it easy to choose how the story could be told succinctly across six windows. Do you have help with all this? Our team can be up to 40 artisans, imparting their particular craft to make it as magical as can be. They are extremely keen to come back and work on the windows year after year. Many have done more than 10 seasons. What is your favourite stage? It has to be the unveiling of the windows on launch day. From choosing a picture book and adapting the imagery into concepts, and transforming the concepts into 3D dioramas, the best moment is the first time I actually get to see how it all looks behind glass, along with everyone else! It’s the most anxious moment for me. Your favourite Christmas tradition? Mince tarts. See John’s windows at The Myer Centre, 91 Queen St, city. themyercentre.com.au

Oh what a night Thomas McGuane can’t quite believe his luck in scoring his dream role in Jersey Boys Life has imitated art for university graduate Thomas McGuane who is the fresh face of the musical Jersey Boys. Thomas plays Bob Gaudio, the youngest and newest member of the famous 1960s rock group The Four Seasons, whose story is told in the Broadway blockbuster Jersey Boys, opening at QPAC on January 2. “It’s funny how art follows life and life follows art,” Thomas laughs. “Bob was the youngest in the group and had to learn to fit in and to get to know the group. And I’m hopping in with a group of people who have already done the show and finding
where I fit in. Fortunately, I’ve hit it off straight away and there’s been nothing but support and a strong camaraderie.” While Glaston Toft (Nick Massi) and Cameron MacDonald (Tommy DeVito) are from the original Australian 2009-10 tour, Ryan Gonzalez (Frankie Valli) and Thomas are the newcomers to the show.
2
He says it was Bob’s entry which sparked a golden era for The Four Seasons with a string of hits including Big Girls Don’t Cry. “Bob was the missing piece of the puzzle. He was penning the hit song Sherry within 15 minutes of meeting the group … and soon after, Walk Like a Man,” Thomas

says. “At the point Bob came in, he had already had a hit with Short Shorts.” Thomas, 22, of Melbourne, is still pinching himself after he auditioned for the role while in his final year of university in Victoria. The show marks his Brisbane debut. “Winning the role solidified all the hard work and passion. There’s not a day which goes by which I don’t wake up and think how good I’ve got it,” he says. “The show has so much energy and excitement, it has a great story and fantastic sets but most importantly there are some cracking songs. My favourite is Who Loves You. “Not only is this a nostalgic story but it’s an untold story, it details all the struggles and is a warts-and-all look. The show is a monumental success creatively… and you really discover who each of these guys are. Each character gets to guide the audience through their version of the story.” Thomas has been a fan of the Jersey Boys soundtrack for the past decade. “We were camping and dad brought the soundtrack along and I remember listening to Oh, What a Night and loving the music from then on,” he says. ART
Lifting the lid A museum residency in London prompted artist Daniel Boyd to reveal dark secrets about past treatment of Aboriginal people Phil Brown
OUT OF THE BOX … Artist Daniel Boyd. Picture: Nicole Cleary
The question is ... are there any skulls in artist Daniel Boyd’s skull boxes? Maybe that’s the wrong question but I can’t help wondering. And that makes it all the more intriguing for me. His sculpture Decommissioned skull boxes: Natural History Museum London is in Boundary Lines, now showing at Griffith University Art Museum. Curated by the art museum’s director, Angela Goddard, this show draws us “into a physical conversation with the world around us by considering the effect of built environments, metaphorical spaces and modes of institutional regulation on our personal and group behaviours, cultural sensitivities and universal memories”. Daniel Boyd is a Cairns-born, Sydney-based, indigenous artist. His skull boxes relate to a residency at the Natural History Museum in London, where he worked with its collection and came across a lot of early Australian material. During that residency the museum was rehousing its collection of human remains including several hundred items of Aboriginal remains. Daniel became interested in the cardboard boxes containing these human remains
in the name of science and made his own. The work in this show, created in 2017, places the viewer “in a direct physical encounter with the evidence of bodies being reduced to categorisations” writes Angela. Daniel’s work makes you think. Queensland artist Vernon Ah Kee does the same with his powerful video The Island. Angela describes it as “a timely work that features testimony from asylum seekers, spliced with footage of Palm Island and other land- and seascapes to invoke parallel narratives between island prisons and Australia’s colonial history”. There is also an historically based video work by Brazilian artist Rosangela Renno, a sculpture by Carol McGregor and an installation by a New Zealand-based artists’ collective et al which explores the potential of absurdity and paradoxical nonsense in the processes of cultural documentation and classification. Quite a lot to think about but please, don’t look in the boxes. Boundary Lines, until Feb 23, Griffith University Art Museum, 226 Grey St, South Bank. griffith.edu.au/art-museum

FILM
MORTAL ENGINES (M) hhhhj Director: Christian Rivers Starring: Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving A freewheeling steampunk aesthetic and two appealingly unselfconscious leads set Mortal Engines apart from the postapocalyptic Young Adult crowd. While the plot is fairly simple – a scrappy survivor tries to stop an evil, would-be despot from replicating
mankind’s biggest mistake – the worldbuilding is extraordinarily sophisticated. It’s a mythical combination, one that allows the filmmakers to develop the story from the ground up. That begins with a spectacular opening sequence, in which a glittering mega-city-on-wheels chases down a clapped-out desert community in order to ingest its minerals and metal. It’s a combustion driven, all-terrain metaphor for capitalism’s rabid consumerism and the impact that has on the surrounding environment.
Mortal Engines is set in a distant future where Earth has been all but destroyed by The Ancients, a technology obsessed, pop culture-worshipping society that brought about its own destruction via a weapon of mass destruction. To survive in this new, scarcely resourced world – where the food appears to be barely palatable – humankind has developed movable, shapeshifting settlements. These multiple-occupancy Transformers come in a variety of shapes and sizes – one scavenger’s camouflaged
people-carrier, for example, has a segmented exoskeleton that locks together and breaks apart in a mechanically symbiotic relationship. Mortal Engines’ exquisite art direction and production design are matched only by the extraordinary visual effects, created by the team at Weta Digital, the company founded by producer Peter Jackson. Just when things are getting really ugly, the heroes are given a fresh perspective – in rebel leader Anna Fang’s red, sailwinged airship. The casting is superb. There’s a touch of Nordic noir to 29-year-old Icelandic actor Hera Hilmar’s portrayal of the film’s damaged heroine, Hesta Shaw. Robert Sheehan (Misfits) lends an artless warmth as her initially reluctant sidekick. Hugo Weaving’s Thaddeus Valentine strikes the right note of classical villainy. And South Korean singer-turned-actor Jihae plays Fang as an androgynous rock ’n’ rebel. It’s Shrike (Stephen Lang), however, a machine monster fashioned out of resurrected body parts, who steals the film. Christian Rivers, Jackson’s long-time collaborator, makes a remarkably assured directorial debut with this jaw-dropping adaptation of Philip Reeve’s best-selling novel. Actors and visual effects artists work together to create a seamless whole. VICKY ROACH

A luxe mid-century fit-out and top Greek fare take Valley dining to a new level RESTAURANT Tony Harper Hellenika Gold Coast – atmospheric, relaxed, as noisy as three dodgy lawnmowers, decent food and a fun night out. How does it translate to Fortitude Valley and the swanky surrounds of the Calile Hotel? Let’s find out … First up there is the hotel and I have to say I’m a fan. It melds mid-century luxe with tomorrow in an understated way and it transports you from the hot, grimy streets of Fortitude Valley to somewhere resort-ish with a pool, palms, umbrellas, gazebos, and a juvenile Sean Connery perhaps lurking in the corner. I’m dining with my son – a coeliac, built
like spaghetti, who wants to eat everything but is allowed very little. The staff has things sorted and most of the menu – the smaller stuff anyway – is gluten free. This is great, but even better is the delivery. It’s serious service – detailed, engaging, informed and informative. It is the Hellenika highlight. I am talked into two different Greek beers (not so long ago I’d have lopped a toe off with a steak knife
before thinking about Greek beers or wines). Both are good, not fabulous. And there is a wealth of Greek wine on offer – some lovely, some not, but all very interesting – and plenty of wines from elsewhere with a good swag of top-end filler. Bordeauxs, Californians, bigreputation South Aussies. Better can be found without too much effort. But then there are two vintages of DRC Echezeaux
– flawless diamonds among pearls. In short it’s a big, glamorous list, and committed quite convincingly to the Greek theme. Ain’t it funny how our vision affects the rest of our senses? Sitting poolside at a newly-built hotel, the Hellenika food tastes special; better perhaps than the Burleigh version. We try (in descending order of deliciousness) a fish and lemon soup (gratis); stifado calamari ($26) – wonderfully briny octopus tentacles in a tremendous tomato and chilli stew; kolokythia – zucchini chips ($16); a simple, just-right tomato salad ($18); a decent pork belly ($26); and lamb ribs ($28). Dining at Hellenika is escapism. The food is fun, delicious and at times startlingly good, and the service … well that’s something special.

Choose your treasure from the legendary French fashion house as it opens a boutique in Brisbane Annabel Falco When it comes to fashion I try not to play favourites, but there is something about Dior’s whimsical designs, embellished accessories and iconic Saddle Bag that will always hold a special place in my heart. As luck would have it (and just in time for Christmas!), Brisbane has welcomed its very own Dior boutique where the fashion fantasies of creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri are on show for all of Queensland to see. Inspired by the toile de jouy (a French print from the 18th century), the space echoes Christian Dior’s first boutique in Paris, making 22 BRISBANE NEWS December 12-18, 2018

The romantic print also makes an appearance in Chiuri’s latest collection, with slides, totes and the must-have Dior Book Tote all sporting khaki, blue or burgundy interpretations. In an age when trends, looks and “it” items come and go, Dior stands as a fashion force that has stood the test of time. And let’s face it, we all need a little Dior in our lives.

Learn to love the beauty of vertical gardens Movement, beauty, colour and health benefits – there’s a lot to love about the vertical garden trend. Scientists have found some green walls can significantly improve the removal of toxins and carbon dioxide in the air, particularly in an office environment or sealed room where there’s an array of pollutants. Greenery in a high density space can also satisfy our biophilia – the human urge to connect with nature. Here’s how to create a simple one in your home:
large as you like. Ensure the fence or wall you’re attaching it to is sturdy, however, and can take the weight of your plantings.
1 Buy a kit Most kits are created with modules, so you can make your green wall as little or as
3 Watering The great thing about DIY kits is that they often come with their own watering system. Often it’s a polly pipe that runs behind the bracket and into the pot – you can then either attach it directly to a hose pipe, or you could use an irrigation timer.
2 Choose the right plants for the environment If it’s outside in full sun, consider herbs, succulents or other sun-loving plants that are drought-hardy. For shady or indoor spots, look to ferns, the Peace Lily, or succulents native to rainforests. Unless you’ve a real green thumb, opt for low maintenance species to begin with.
4 Microclimate Remember every garden, wall or space in your home has its own microclimate with varying temperatures, light, humidity distribution and air circulation. Check on it daily and try to ensure each plant is flourishing at the same speed.

Modern marvel Contemporary design and a bushland setting conspire to create perfect bliss at this bayside address Tonya Turner
J
ohn and Marie Cairns had two main criteria when they were house hunting in 2015 – they wanted something low-set and different. When the recently retired couple visited a home on top of a hill in Redland Bay, they knew they had found what they were looking for. It had views to Moreton Bay’s islands and was set on 6.8ha of partly cleared land where wallabies grazed. Although the three-bedroom house was 30 years old and had never been renovated, they loved its architecture and saw great potential. “Nothing had been changed since it was built. It needed a complete renovation and we wanted another bedroom and larger outdoor area,” Marie says. The couple tasked Darren James Interiors with transforming the home to give it a quality, modern, timeless design so they could entertain their large extended family including grandchildren. At the HIA QLD Housing Awards in November, the project won awards including Brisbane Kitchen of the Year, Brisbane Bathroom of the Year and the Brisbane Residential Interior Design award. “We renovated the existing home to create a space which references the Australian bushland,” Darren says. “The way the clients live as well as their passion for travelling and family was … brought into the new design.” The company remodelled inside and designed the kitchen, outdoor kitchen, bathroom and laundry along with a new mezzanine level for a study. also handled the interior furnishing and decorating. “The Australian outdoors and our beautiful natural landscape was the inspiration behind the design … The raked ceiling and exposed timber lent a mid-century feeling to the home which we subtly referenced,” Darren says. An overall scheme of neutrals and muted earthy tones such as greys, mustards and greens is offset by purple and black hues. The entry features a Hare and Klein round rug and a modernist George Nelson bubble pendant to accentuate the soaring ceiling. A central, double-sided fireplace create separates dining and living zones in what was a large open lounge room. The main living room features a Cosh Living modular lounge in charcoal fabric, a large teal rug and a Living Edge armchair which draws out colours from the “banksia” floral artwork by Simon Barlow. In the adjacent dining room, a rustic timber table is complemented by the fine lines of Gubi Beetle chairs upholstered in a deep purple fabric along with Laurent pendants by Lambert and Fils. A leather banquette with a built-in shelf above links the kitchen to the casual dining area. In the sitting room, mid-century Featherston armchairs are paired with an Enkoi side table. “There is plenty of space for when the family come over and the grandchildren are running around,” Marie says. LAST WORD
Phil Brown My father was a bit of a tough guy ... he hoped my brother and I would grow up to be like him so he bought us boxing gloves and made us fight it out That recent fight between Jeff Horn and Anthony Mundine was a big disappointment. How long did it last? 96 seconds? I reckon I could have lasted 96 seconds with Horn myself. It would have taken him that long to catch me and then I would just have thrown myself to the ground. I’m not much of a fighter. But I was brought up in a household where we watched all the major bouts. I remember as a kid watching Cassius Clay (that was his name before he became Muhammad Ali) defeat Sonny Liston. We watched all the big fights because my dad was a boxing fan. I still have an old program of his from a fight in Manila in the years after World War II featuring the great Joe Louis who was the Muhammad Ali of his day. My father was a bit of a tough guy and did his share of fighting, mostly outside the ring. I think he hoped my brother and I would grow up to be like him so he
bought us boxing gloves and made us fight it out in the front yard. We would attempt to beat each other to a pulp while he cheered us on. I was never much of a fighter although I did have to defend myself when we moved from Hong Kong to the Gold Coast. Miami State High School in late 1969 was a tough surfie school where the playground was like the exercise yard at Boggo Road. I was beaten up by a kid called Ray not long after arriving and was involved in a fight with a chap called Milton a year or two later. I don’t think I won because I seem to remember sitting in the gravel exhausted afterwards. Yep, pretty sure I lost that one too. I was more interested in surfing and yoga than fighting which is almost certainly a good thing. But I don’t mind the sport of boxing and I grew up watching all the classic fights and movies and I was as into the

Rocky franchise as everyone else. On screen, however, my favourite boxing sequence is a hilarious episode of The Three Stooges in which Curly (the fat one with the crew cut) becomes a boxer. To get him fighting though requires a mouse. When Curly saw a mouse he went berserk and became a human threshing machine. Add boxing gloves and he could knock anyone out. And the only way to calm him down was to stuff cheese in his mouth. Crazy stuff. If only Anthony Mundine had some sort of secret weapon like Curly, well, he might have gone the distance. Although I must admit the HornMundine fight was as comical as The Three Stooges. If I had paid to go to it I would have been a tad annoyed. Hell I might even have got up and had a go myself just to get my money’s worth. I can float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. In my dreams.

ASCOT 19 Upper Lancaster Rd Land: 834sq m
More buyers and fewer listings is the perfect storm for sellers, and this wave of buyers regularly leads to less time on market. January buyers are more likely to commit to a sale than in any other month. This sense of urgency will often halve the average time on market for many homes, and can also result in a greater clearance rate for properties.

In addition to a large laundry room with ample bench space and a linen cupboard, the remainder of the ground floor consists of an open-plan living hub with a kitchen and bar. Accessing the first floor via a staircase, a family room sits at the centre of the floor. Adjacent to the family room is a linen cupboard and a bathroom with a double vanity along with a separate bath and shower. To one side there are three generous sized bedrooms with built-in wardrobes. The bedroom at the rear of the property has a balcony which overlooks the backyard and swimming pool below.
While the other end of the floor is occupied entirely by the main bedroom, stylish ensuite and oversized walk-in dressing room. “Indoor and outdoor spaces merge seamlessly, making it the perfect home for entertaining,” Kym says. “The master suite is a highlight offering a luxurious, sophisticated space which includes a parents’ retreat, stunning en suite and a large boutique style dressing room.”
