‘Funeral Home of the Future’ opens in Kelvin Grove 270 Kelvin Grove Road, Kelvin Grove George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals Honouring Lives

White Lady & George Hartnett Metropolitan, Kelvin Grove

Kelvin Grove is now home to one of Australia’s most innovative and technically advanced funeral homes and the largest facility of its kind in Queensland. InvoCare opened this ‘state of the art’ home following a $4 million, six month transformation of the existing location at the well-known landmark on Kelvin Grove Rd. Operating under the White Lady Funerals and George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals

brands, the home offers a stunning, world class casket presentation water feature situated in a large internal court yard. Private services can be held in the courtyard with the coffin placed on top of the water feature (see image) for family and friends to celebrate the life of their loved one. The home provides three private arranging rooms, a viewing room, a reflection lounge with an outdoor balcony area, and a 120 seat non-denominational chapel.

The home also includes a state-of-the-art audio-visual system enabling families to live web cast and record the service to share with family and friends interstate and overseas. Location Manager Joanne Smith said the stunning transformation was the result of in depth customer research into the changing needs of the funeral industry which had revealed families wanted a contemporary environment to farewell their loved ones.

GHM-BN-KG-P2-0119

Advertising Feature “Funerals have changed a lot in the last 30 to 40 years, to what is now a very celebratory and personalised event,” she said. “People are now requiring creative and innovative funeral services. Our staff are event planners and able to provide families a personalised funeral with many options.” “Our new funeral home can cater to all size funerals from intimate gatherings to 120 guests seated and many more with some guests standing.” InvoCare’s research also revealed that families wanted access to the latest technology when paying tribute to their loved ones and connecting those who were unable to farewell the deceased in person. So if you have relatives in England for instance the team at Kelvin Grove can live stream to those locations via web-casting. People can log on through our website and view the service when it suits them.

Real flowers, water features and comfortable soft furnishings at Kelvin Grove will also add to the warmth of services and comfort of our families.

and food served by waiting staff. Some families want a less formal service and others want something more like a cocktail event.

“It was important to create an environment in which people feel calm and relaxed. They might come in emotionally stressed, so it is a comfort to be able to come into an environment where you can relax and have a team of caring people who can take you through the process.”

“We’ve held services where the family has requested that people be greeted at the door with a glass of champagne because that’s what Pop wanted. We can do that in this beautiful space,” said Ms Smith Ms Smith encourages people to wander in to Kelvin Grove, meet the staff and have a look at the refurbished home which can be used by community groups for a range of different events and activities.

The importance of hospitality was another key finding from InvoCare’s research. “It’s important there are tears to assist the grieving process but it is also important to have laughter and celebration of a life well lived as part of the grieving process.” Ms Smith said.

“Long gone are the days when people had hesitation about walking into a funeral home. We have a wonderful, friendly team just pop in and say hi as you would any other service in the community. We are looking forward to sharing with the community what we have created.”

The Reflection Lounge can comfortably hold up to 150 people (120 seated, 30 standing), with sliding doors opening to an outdoor deck. The lounge is serviced by a full commercial kitchen

PLAN AHEAD FOR PEACE OF MIND When you’ve lost a loved one, at an already emotional time, planning a funeral can be stressful and costly. A prepaid funeral with George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals or White Lady Funerals can alleviate the burden from your family and provide them with peace of mind. The plan is prepaid and entrusted into the care of the funeral director of your choice, to deliver upon when the time comes at no additional cost to your family.^ One of the great benefits of a prepaid funeral is that cost remains the same as the day you planned it. On average, a pre-paid funeral today costs $6,500. That cost will remain the same regardless of how long you live. For example, if you live another 27 years the cost of a funeral at that time would be estimated at $15,000. However, as your funeral has been pre-paid at $6,500 that price is locked in and there is no more to pay.^

On the other hand, if you take out funeral insurance today and pay premiums for the same period (27 years) the cost would be approximately $35,000.

A pre-paid funeral plan covers:

“A prepaid funeral makes it easier on your family as your wishes are known,” said Michael Hamilton from George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals. “When the time comes, all your family has to do is call the nominated funeral provider and they will begin the arrangements. No payout or forms required.”

- Preparation and care for the deceased

Funds with George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals and White Lady Funerals are safely held with the Over Fifty Guardian Friendly Society, an APRA registered organisation, until they are needed, offering you security that in years when needed the funds are still available. “By paying for your funeral in advance, you relieve your family of the funeral costs and the distress of making difficult decisions at an emotional time,” said Michael.

- Professional guidance for your family - Transportation for the deceased

- Funeral arrangements including the type and style of funeral you want - All legal documentation Instalment plans are available with George Hartnett Metropolitan Funerals and White Lady Funerals who also offer a 30 day cooling off period.

This week... With Valentine’s Day upon us (Thursday, in case you need to place a quick order at the florist), love is in the air. So what better way to mark the occasion than with an issue dedicated to all things romance? To that end, Hannah Davies asks lovebirds including our cover stars Tim Johnson and Angela Mogridge how they found “the one” (P10); Alastair McLeod whips up a luscious Valentine’s Day dessert (P15); and Emma Schafer chats to one of Brisbane’s busiest marriage celebrants (P12). Paul Voge, who also performs in punk-rock band We Set Sail, makes a lot of sense and insists that love has nothing to do with diamond rings. “It’s just two people that get each other in all their weirdness and they want to hang out for the rest of their lives,” he says. “Love is easy, sometimes hard, but easy.”

Sugar and spice Newlywed Zoe Dalrymple has dreamt big and worked hard to carve out a future in cake Emma Schafer

L

ife is sweet for baker Zoe Dalrymple. In 2016 she said “I do” to husband Andrew Litschner at a flamboyant circus-themed wedding at Samford Showgrounds. Two years later, loved up and settled in their Dayboro home about an hour northwest of Brisbane, she said yes to her other great love – cake. The graphic designer, 33, had long been the designated dessert maker for family and friends, but it wasn’t until her straight-talking dad challenged her to follow through on her passion for baking that Zoe cooked up Confetti Cake Co, her bespoke cake and dessert business. “The tipping point was in mid-2017, just after I had made a cake for my sister-in-law’s hens night,” Zoe says. “I was (with) my dad … and I was raving about that cake. He asked the tough question, ‘What do you want to do with your life?’, and my reply was ‘I just want to make cakes every day’. In typical dad style, he told me to stop mucking around and make it happen.” So she did. She flooded her Instagram page with photos of her fabulous creations, launching herself as a cake-maker for hire, and the inquiries started rolling in. Amazingly, Zoe was baking for her first wedding cake order just two days after launching in early 2018. “I still work full time (in graphic design) but as soon as I get home the apron goes

on, the hair goes up and I work until midnight baking, designing, quoting and decorating,” she says. Her repertoire of sweet treats includes everything from three-tier sticky date wedding cakes with salted caramel buttercream to Jurassic Park themed cakes and doughnuts. And Zoe assures us her cakes taste as good as they look. “Lots of people can make a cake look good, but if it doesn’t taste good then what’s the point?” she says. “It’s so important to me to make everything from scratch, using the highest quality ingredients sourced locally where possible. It makes such a big difference to the overall cake-eating experience. I have to admit I’m a bit of a nerd and I love the chemistry of it all. You take a few unrelated items, in perfect proportions and mix it up into a wonderful fluffy delicious creation. There is such a science to it.” Andrew is only too happy to help with taste testing and will even get his hands dirty doing the dishes. Zoe playfully admits she picked her project manager husband from across the room at a mutual friend’s wedding and decided, “I’ll take him”. “We hit it off and we’ve been inseparable since then,” she says. “He’s sensible and reserved which perfectly balances my ‘outgoing and let’s do all the things’ personality.” HOW SWEET IT IS … Wedding cake whiz Zoe Dalrymple and Andrew Litschner, with furry friend Harley, on their wedding day. TIM JOHNSON & ANGELA MOGRIDGE It was a case of right place, right time for Brisbane couple Tim Johnson and Angela Mogridge. The glamorous lovebirds say they were destined to be together. “We have so many similarities it’s like we were living parallel lives and we just finally found each other when the time was right,” says Tim, 36, a restaurateur who owns the popular Corbett & Claude and Comuna Cantina chains. Angela, 39, a former model, owns marketing agency Ruby6, and previously dated pop hunk Peter Andre and TV weatherman Josh Holt. “We have the same values, the same star sign (Taurus) and five members of our respective families have the same names,” Tim says. “It’s really hard to find someone who understands what it’s like to own your own business and work 24/7 and who is also a beautiful person.” The pair had been socialising in the same circles for months but were not formally introduced until a mutual friend did the honours towards the end of 2016. A midnight kiss on New Year’s Eve gave Tim the courage to ask Angela on a date – to an RnB concert at Eatons Hill Hotel. Then on June 19 last year Tim popped the question over breakfast on the romantic Greek island of Santorini. “We were sitting at the restaurant at our hotel overlooking the ocean when Tim got down on one knee,” Angela says. “I said, ‘Of course’, and flung my hands in the air and the beautiful ring almost went over the cliff, but luckily Tim caught it. We hugged and kissed and jumped up and down.” The Newstead couple are toying with the idea of a destination wedding later this year, but are yet to lock in a date. Meanwhile, they are having fun at salsa dancing classes and on bike rides, and doing personal development programs to strengthen their relationship. “We look to grow as a couple as well as become better individuals,” says Tim. For Valentine’s Day they will picnic in New Farm Park. “I will also be making Tim some love-heart-shaped protein pancakes for brekky,” adds Angela.

COVER STORY

TONY & VALERIE STRUGAR

NIC CHER AND TIM WANG

Fans of Channel 10’s The Bachelorette might remember Tony Strugar as one of the would-be suitors ousted by Sam Frost on the 2015 season. But the public disappointment did not stifle Tony’s search for a happy ending and, as luck would have it, he found the love of his life well away from the spotlight. In February 2017 the former flight attendant turned business development manager, now 36, stumbled across single mum Valerie Congreve on Instagram. He was so smitten by her pictures that he sent her a message asking her to brunch. The couple hit it off straight away. Tony proposed 10 months later, and on September 15 last year they tied the knot at Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast, with Valerie’s adorable four-year-old daughter Blue (pictured) as flower girl. Beauty therapist Valerie, 27, who was at first unaware Tony had been a reality TV star, says it was love at first sight. “He swept me off my feet,” she says. “I wasn’t looking for love because I was a single mum living at home with my parents and really didn’t think I had that much to offer, but then Tony came along and everything changed. “He’s an incredible husband and bestie, but also an amazing daddy to my little Blue and their bond is so beautiful.” While Tony admits he was initially disappointed that he didn’t get the chance to woo Sam on The Bachelorette, he says meeting Valerie changed everything. “I knew straight away I wanted to see her again after our first date,” he says. “I actually had ‘a moment’ when I met her that I thought, ‘Oh damn’, because … I could see myself falling for her. It happened within weeks. My feelings were pretty strong and I realised that’s why I wasn’t meant to be with Sam Frost. Everything really does happen for a reason.” The newlyweds, who live at Mt Gravatt East, recently launched scented candle business Blue Dominique. Valentine’s Day will see them do something fun together, like picnicking at a winery, Valerie says.

Every day is like Valentine’s Day for Nic Cher and Tim Wang. The couple makes a point of prioritising their relationship, while also enjoying family time with their son Dylan, 3. “Being with Tim and my son means every day is a special day for me,” says Nic, a veterinarian. “I celebrate every day.” Their love story began in 2000 when Nic and Tim met at a party in Singapore. When they returned home to their studies, Tim in Brisbane and Nic in Canada, they lost touch. When Nic decided to finish his Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland, he looked Tim up. Tim had moved to Melbourne to study architecture but by 2003 the couple reunited in Brisbane. They had a commitment ceremony on April 28, 2012, and were legally married last year. “I would say we had an instant connection because from that one meeting we followed each other all over the world,” says construction and technology lawyer Tim, 36. “I think Nic very quickly made the transition from lover to becoming my family. To stand in front of people in the community and our families and show our love for one another was important … and the completion of our journey as a couple.” Dylan was born via an American surrogate in July 2015. The couple is tightlipped about which one of them is the biological father, but say they are still in touch with the birth mother. “We were in the room when Dylan was born and we got to cut the umbilical cord,” Tim says. “It was an incredible experience.” While the Indooroopilly couple are keen to give Dylan a sibling, they have had disappointments. Nic, 39, who owns Fortitude Valley Vet, says, “Because of our struggle a lot of women have opened up to us about their own fertility issues and we find support through that.” Valentine’s Day may be a welcome distraction, although Tim says they will likely end up watching Frozen again or making slime with Dylan (pictured). “We always wanted to be parents so this is a sacrifice worth making.”

TRAILBLAZER

All my couples just want to get married and have fun with it ... no poems, no bibles

LOVE MATCH ... Celebrant Paul Voge (left) is always up for some fun with the newlyweds. Pictures: Russell Shakespeare (main), Talitha Crawford and Kristina Wild

Crazy little thing Musician and marriage celebrant Paul Voge sets the scene for couples to embark on the voyage of a lifetime Emma Schafer Paul Voge, 39, is a marriage celebrant and the lead guitarist of Brisbane punk/rock band We Set Sail. He lives in Albany Creek with his wife Cassie, 39, and their children Lucca, 8, and Molly, 4. Why become a marriage celebrant? It turns out owning a record store is not the best way to make a living, so about five years after starting Kill The Music in Brisbane city I gave the idea of being a celebrant a go. I needed to make extra money to keep the shop going, plus keep my family alive, but I never thought I would end up doing this full time. I started back in 2012, which seems like a lifetime ago now. 12 BRISBANE NEWS February 13-19, 2019

I think I am at about 650-700 weddings so far. This year, I currently have 80 weddings booked. Music is still a big part of your life though … Yes, I’m still making music. My band We Set Sail will release our third album – Ritual & Ceremony – this year. Musically we get described as “sad bastard music”, but we are just a punk rock band that grew up and forgot to stop playing in a punk rock band. Plus I still have numerous hits on the ukulele that my daughter and I write together. The most memorable wedding you’ve officiated? Last year at a wedding the bride crowdsurfed down the aisle carried by her wedding party. It’s weird because every little wedding has something rad that happens and I usually have the best seat in the house to see the couple and the audience and all their reactions which is cool. In a way every wedding is memorable because you spend so long planning it that

when it finally happens, and it happens just as you planned, it’s awesome. Your favourite wedding moment? Seeing and hearing the couple say their vows. They never know each other’s vows (before the wedding) but I do, so … seeing their reaction and the crowd’s reaction is always killer. And of course the end – the kiss. The music plays, they walk down that aisle and everyone congratulates them. What’s new in weddings? All my couples just want to get married and have fun with it … no poems, no bibles … just hearing about the couple getting married is all we need. Your top tip for engaged couples planning a wedding? Listen to everyone’s advice and opinions and then instantly ignore them. You do a wedding your way and if you don’t know how that’s done, well that’s what I am here for. The number of times I’ve heard people say “I didn’t know you could do that in a ceremony” when I explain some ideas is

crazy. Most people think a wedding ceremony is this weird part of the day they need to get over with. When couples say it was the best part of the day, I am so stoked. Can you tell if a marriage will stand the test of time? That is a skill I do not possess. I got an email the other day that said there were 112,954 marriages in Australia last year, and thankfully all the people I married are doing all they can to stand the test of time. Marriage takes work, people know this. What does love look like to you? In my job I see it every week. I see it when a bride or groom walk down the aisle. I see it when I pronounce them married. I see it when they call each other husband or wife or partner for the first time. Love is not poems that make no sense. It’s not huge diamond rings. It’s just two people that get each other in all their weirdness and they want to hang out for the rest of their lives. Love is easy, hard sometimes, but easy. paulvogemarriagecelebrant.com V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

LIFE

Brooke Falvey At first I thought he was on the brink of death, then I thought perhaps he was depressed from being forced to watch B-grade movies We need to talk about Alan. For months, Alan deliberately refused to do the one job for which he was purchased – swim around in circles and bring happiness to my abode. Alan, the goldfish, came into my life when things were a bit of a mess. I’d gone through a break up, scratched my car, had a throat infection and mild food poisoning, and spent all my money online shopping because I couldn’t leave the house without yelling at some unsuspecting person. I’d also killed my third cactus, so I figured it was time for something else. And, clearly, a cat was out of the question. After washing and cleaning the

bowl, I settled Alan in to his new home and waited for him to take to it like, well, a fish to water. But instead, he immediately sunk to the bottom of the bowl, where he proceeded to hold his breath and stare at me. And that’s pretty much all he did for weeks on end. I felt like I was holding him hostage. At first I thought he was on the brink of death, then I thought perhaps he was depressed from being forced to watch B-grade movies, but I soon realised it was much simpler – Alan was just a jerk. Which is why I devised a scheme to catch him out. I turned off all the lights and slowly snuck up on him and sure enough, Alan was swimming

around like he was in the bloody Commonwealth Games – practically creating a whirlpool in his bowl. The moment I flicked on the lights, he dropped back to the bottom of the bowl and held his breath. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that the moment Alan came into my apartment, my dishwasher stopped working. And the air conditioner started making a funny noise. Alan wasn’t just a jerk. He was also a poltergeist. Right up until the day we parted ways (I swear it was from natural causes), I feared I’d wake up to find him standing up on his tail on my bedside table waiting to hit me on the head with a saucepan.

FOOD + DRINK

Out for a duck A smart dining room sets the tone for an Asian banquet with a recurring theme RESTAURANT Tony Harper

BIRDS OF A FEATHER ... Offerings at The Duck Room include roasted duck as part of Duck Four Ways. Pictures: Mark Cranitch

There are three diners perched at a table, waiting – quite expectantly – for the duck pancake course. And out it comes, a nice collection of duck meat in cubes with skin on, cucumber ribbons, spring onions, hoisin and (here’s the clincher) two pancakes. Three people, two pancakes. We are one pancake short, no matter which way you skin it. We ask for another and are told “no, this dish comes with two”. So we order a side of pancakes ($9) more cucumber, more spring onions and all of a sudden things have reversed. Now there is not enough duck for the rest of the menagerie. Oh dear. I get it. The dish is the second course in Duck Four Ways, designed no doubt for one, not three. But we are sharing a number of things; an extra pancake is merely common sense; cheap, easy, and I’m happy to pay. For want of a nail … We are dining at The Duck Room, part of the beautifully appointed, big-ideas, Mercado on King St. It is a grocery store (the flashiest you are likely to see between

now and doomsday) with seafood, fruit and veggies, meats, cheese, wine, beer, The Bistro and The Duck Room. You are met by folk in smart-looking aprons and massaged through the place. There are ducks hanging in a display cabinet – nice to see them being treated in-house. And the results justify the effort – these are really good with skin the colour of molasses and very, very tasty. The meat is plump and moist. But despite having star billing, there are better things to be had than the duck. Tuna nigiri for example ($38 for four pieces). It’s “toro” – the fatty stuff of the tuna – belly, and a startling beginning to the meal; real wasabi paste, pickled ginger. I’m fresh back from a fortnight eating in Japan and this still rates. And scallop nigiri ($18 for four pieces) has a bit less wow, but is still quite marvellous. Then there is a collection of cheong fun – Cantonese rice noodle rolls – and we have a crack at beef short rib ($26); quirky, tasty, beautifully plated, inventive, bits of dried mushroom still dehydrated.

Duck Four Ways ($89) has greater problems than a missing pancake. First up is broth, enoki mushrooms scattered on the top, spring onion, more dried mushroom. The trouble is that the broth isn’t finished; it’s a terrific base that needs acid, seasoning and other bits to really sing. And we don’t get share-bowls, which makes it tricky. The last dish is made of duck bones in a starchy (cornflour perhaps) coating, deep-fried with a Sichuan-like, chilli sauce. But again it’s unfinished – it needs sour and sweet. It’s tough to write this. So much of The Duck Room, so much of Mercado, is brilliant. And you can see the effort, the thinking, the vision that has gone into making it tick. But there is detail missing – tasting the dishes, rounding them out; staff training and product knowledge; three pancakes for three diners … that sort of thing. With a little polish it could really be something.

RECIPE

Love bite Beguile your beloved with this Valentine’s Day dessert, says Alastair McLeod This Thursday indulge in a bottle of Champagne, a dazzling platter of Queensland seafood, and a simple dessert – prepared the day before. This fragrant jelly with chocolate cream is light and familiar with just a soupcon of Valentine’s kitsch.

WATERMELON AND ROSE JELLY, WATERMELON SALAD, WHITE CHOCOLATE COEUR A LA CREME INGREDIENTS 5 leaves gelatine 40g caster sugar 460ml watermelon juice ½tsp rosewater 70g finely chopped watermelon, chilled 70g finely chopped strawberries Mint leaves, shredded

40g pistachios Crystallised rose petal, in pieces

Coeur a la creme 150g cream cheese 65g icing sugar 200ml cream, chilled 60g white chocolate, melted and cooled

METHOD Place gelatine leaves in cold water to bloom. Heat sugar and a quarter of the watermelon juice over a gentle heat until the sugar dissolves. Drain gelatine and squeeze to remove excess water. Stir into warmed watermelon juice and swirl to dissolve. Add remaining juice and rosewater. Pass through a fine sieve, pour into plastic darioles and chill until set. For the Coeur a la creme, beat cream cheese, sugar and 40ml of cream in a stand mixer until smooth. Add chocolate and beat again until smooth. Whip remaining cream to stiff peaks. Fold into chocolate mixture. Lay 4 x 30cm squares of damp muslin on work surface and divide mixture evenly. Pull corners together and tie into beggars’ purses. Suspend in fridge over a bowl to catch liquid that drains. When ready to serve, combine chopped melon, strawberries, mint and pistachio and spoon onto plates. Unwrap a Coeur, set onto salad and sprinkle with crystallised rose pieces. Dip jellies into a bowl of hot water then demould onto plates. Garnish as desired. Serves 4

GOING OUT

Take it away The return of Single Asian Female’s whip-smart women is made to order for actor Courtney Stewart Fiona Purdon Not even the arrival of her first baby prevented Courtney Stewart from appearing in last year’s sellout season of Single Asian Female. Brisbane-bred Courtney, whose son Bobby was only seven weeks old during the Sydney run, says the opportunity was simply too good to miss. Now she looks forward to revisiting the role of Year 12 student Mei for this month’s return season at La Boite. “You never receive roles like this as a performer with an Asian background and I wanted to hold onto it. I felt the character was mine,” she says. As one of the stars of Michelle Law’s hit play Single Asian Female, Courtney is benefitting from a new era of diversity in Australian theatre. “Michelle wrote the play because there were no roles for actors like us but since the first season … there has been an absolute watershed moment in our industry because we are all working. “It’s been hard to pin people down (for the return season) because everyone is so busy with productions lined up,” Courtney says. “I didn’t realise how profound the play’s effect would be … people who had never come to the theatre before felt their faces and voices were represented. “It’s not just a play for Chinese

Australians but appeals to anyone who exists in a family unit.” With Bobby now one, Courtney will return to the stage alongside Emily Burton (Mei’s best friend Katie) who was pregnant during the original 2017 season while Alex Lee (Mei’s older sister Zoe) has just become a first-time mother and is unavailable to perform. “Everyone jokes that if you go on the show you will get pregnant because that is what has happened,” Courtney says. Single Asian Female follows the story of restaurateur Pearl Wong (Hsiao-Ling Tang) and daughters Zoe and Mei, who is bullied at school. “The play is staged in a Chinese restaurant. It’s a family dramedy, it’s hard-hitting and has heartfelt moments while there is always comedic relief right around the corner,” she says. “Mei is in her final year of high school. She is definitely trying to fit in with the cool girls. She is struggling with her identity and is trying to move away from her Chinese culture.” Courtney, who is studying directing, identifies with Mei’s school struggles. “You want to fit in but growing up I was constantly made to feel like an outsider,” says Courtney, who fell in love with drama and storytelling at Somerville House before studying drama at QUT. “I struggled with expectation and I struggled with academics. To continue to do dancing and creative endeavours I had to improve my grades, especially maths, so it made me determined to study hard.” Single Asian Female, Feb 16-Mar 9, La Boite Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove. laboite.com.au

Close to home With new recruits in the mix, John Butler Trio is promising fans a fully-charged spectacle on Brisbane’s Riverstage

What doesn’t change is that we just get on stage and give it 150,000 per cent ... there are no backing tracks

Daniel Johnson When John Butler released the title track and first single from the John Butler Trio’s seventh album Home in August last year, it confounded many of his long-time fans. In addition to being underpinned by trap-inspired beats and synthesisers, its lyrics – “When the curtains are drawn / Everybody has gone / I sit here all alone/ All the bottles are dry /Coming down from the high” – unambiguously laid bare the 43-year-old’s anxieties. It was a leftfield choice for first single from the album, which debuted at No.1 on the ARIA charts in October, but as the singer-songwriter explains to Brisbane News, he thought the song “was a good way to snap people out of anything they might expect”. “It was one end of the spectrum of the album, and I thought it was less predictable and less expected,” John (pictured) says. “It’s a style of music I really like and that I write a lot on my computer and that’s what kind of came out and I thought that was better than doing something that people expected of me,” he says. “When I released (second single) Just Call, people were like, ‘OK, cool, yeah, I was expecting more this’. It gets people’s attention.” The John Butler Trio – a West Australian outfit which also comprises bassist Bryon Luiters and drummer Grant

Gerathy – will play at Brisbane’s Riverstage on Feb 22, and something else fans likely wouldn’t have been anticipating is a “trio” comprised of five people. John says percussionist Lozz Benson and multi-instrumentalist Michael Hardy have joined the fray for the upcoming live shows. “I thought maybe some hard-corers (fans) might be like ‘I’m not sure if I’m on board

(with the new line-up)’, but there have been so many fans throughout Europe, as well as Australia and America, who have been like ‘this is some of the best stuff I’ve seen of you, and I’ve watched 13 shows’.” The singer and guitarist is quick to assure fans that some things don’t change. “What doesn’t change is that we just get on stage and give it 150,000 per cent,” he says.

“What you see is kind of what you get, there are no backing tracks and this is a passion play, man, this is what we do. Some things can’t be upgraded other than giving it everything you’ve got, and that’s what we do, every night.” John Butler Trio at Riverstage, Brisbane, Feb 22. ticketmaster.com.au

ART

Range rovers Two artists go bush to find inspiration in creating scenes that others often overlook

Phil Brown

The landscape looks impossibly remote and exotic until you realise that it’s in our own backyard. Peter Hudson’s painting Travelling Home via the Creek, Ngun Ngun is proof that a landscape painter doesn’t have to go far to get inspiration in Queensland. That painting of one of the Glass House Mountains is part of a suite of Peter’s works now showing in an exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art. Peter, who lives at Maleny, is one of our leading landscape painters and has ranged far and wide across the continent in that endeavour. In the middle of this year he has planned a painting trip with fellow artist Euan Macleod to the MacDonnell Ranges in the Northern Territory. “As a landscape painter you don’t even have to leave Queensland really,” Peter says. “I’m going to concentrate on Queensland for the next 10 years.” Peter was born in Townsville. His father was an air traffic controller which meant he was deployed to towns such as Longreach which is where Peter reckons he picked up his love of the Outback. “That’s where it happened for me,” Peter says. “Being out there I got a headful and eye for the bush.” He likes the coast as well as the more arid locales and there are paintings in this exhibition of far north Queensland, particularly the area around Cooktown where Peter did some plein air painting in the great outdoors. These terrestrial works V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

are complemented by some celestial pieces including a wonderful painting of our planet entitled Vincent van Gogh Once Lived Here. Hudson is also a talented portrait painter and has five in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra – one of Mal Meninga and others of Archie Roach, Chad Morgan, Neil Murray and Kev Carmody. His work at Mitchell Fine Art hangs along with a number by Ann Thomson.

Her works in this show are the result of two residencies – one in France, the other on Magnetic Island off Townsville, which keeps up the Queensland theme. There are works by a number of other artists in Mike Mitchell’s stable including one of our favourites, Stewart MacFarlane. Director’s Choice: Ann Thomson and Peter Hudson, until Feb 23, Mitchell Fine Art, Fortitude Valley. mitchellfineartgallery.com

FILM

AT ETERNITY’S GATE (PG) hhhkj Director: Julian Schnabel Starring: Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Oscar Isaac

RAW DEAL ... Regina King plays the mother of a pregnant woman whose fiance is framed for rape in If Beale Street Could Talk.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (MA15+) hhhkj Director: Barry Jenkins Starring: Stephan James, KiKi Layne, Regina King When boy meets girl in ’70s Harlem, happily-ever-after isn’t a viable outcome – no matter how hip they are, or how enduring their love. The system is rigged against them, as Barry Jenkins’ lusciously photographed adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel makes abundantly clear. Ed Skrein’s spiteful police officer – who frames Alonzo “Fonny” Hunt (Stephan James) for rape – is the blunt and obvious instrument of their oppression. But the ground-shifting resistance encountered by Fonny’s white lawyer (Finn Wittrock) underscores the insidious and far-reaching nature of that racial prejudice. A friend from the old neighbourhood (Brian Tyree Henry), who has just been released from jail following a mirroring miscarriage of justice, embodies the damage done. It’s in the spaces between the words that

Jenkins’ characters speak most powerfully – those moments in which they stop talking and look directly at the camera. Narrated by Fonny’s fiance, Tish (KiKi Layne), If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of the young couple’s transition from childhood friends to lovers. The film opens with a prison visit in which Tish reveals to Fonny that she is pregnant. At this point, she is confident she can prove his innocence. Tish’s family – mum (Regina King), dad (Colman Domingo) and feisty big sister Ernestine (Teyonah Parris) – close ranks to support the loved-up couple. But Fonny’s bible thumping, fire-andbrimstone mother (Aunjanue Ellis) takes a much more negative view. If Beale Street Could Talk flashes back and forth between the couple’s current predicament, and the recent past, which is bathed in the warm glow of first love, even when conditions are far from ideal. While dank and barely habitable, Fonny’s West Village basement flat still represents autonomy and hitherto unexplored opportunities to the smitten pair. And seen through Tish’s eyes, Fonny’s local Italian restaurant is wonderfully

cosmopolitan. But it doesn’t take long for outside forces to impinge upon their happiness. If Beale Street Could Talk is a sad, powerful, at times tender story of love and race hate from the director of the Oscarwinning film Moonlight. But there are three scenes that jar. When Fonny’s father, Frank (Michael Beach), slaps his sanctimonious and meanspirited mother (Ellis) so hard that she falls to the floor, there’s a sense, from the other characters, that this is an almost appropriate response to her behaviour. Tish’s sexual passivity during what is portrayed as a kind of consensual deflowering is also uncomfortable to watch. And the scene in which Tish’s mother confronts the Puerto Rican rape victim who has wrongly identified her son-in-law-to-be, sending a deeply traumatised woman over the edge, is disturbingly unresolved. Moonlight offered a rich, layered, extremely nuanced perspective on African-American malehood. One might argue that Jenkins’ women need a little more work.

From the haunting image of a field of dead sunflowers to a disturbed manifestation of the Dutch postimpressionist’s fervent, almost violent, male gaze … At Eternity’s Gate does such a good job of putting its audience inside the head of troubled artist Vincent van Gogh, one leaves the cinemas feeling slightly disoriented. The effect is heightened by cinematographer Benoit Delhomme’s liberal use of a handheld camera, which emulates his subject’s giddy interior state. Like the painstakingly crafted animation, Loving Vincent, released in Australia last year, At Eternity’s Gate focuses on the isolated, tempestuous final years of the artist’s life, in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, from 1888-1890. It was a time of feverish productivity during which van Gogh painted many of his best-known works. It was also the period in which he cut off his own ear, spent a considerable amount of time in psychiatric institutions, and was fatally shot in mysterious circumstances. Where Loving Vincent took the form of an arty whodunit, painter-filmmaker Julian Schnabel explores the artist’s internal state and how that affected his work. Willem Dafoe paints himself into the lead role with such emotional precision, van Gogh’s original self-portraits appear momentarily fake. And Schnabel’s painterly eye lends fresh perspective to a potentially overfamiliar story. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

After studying medicine and engineering, Chelmer author Charlotte Nash has found her passion

Cook faces difficult times when her American-based businessman husband Duncan, who had abandoned her and their son Harry, does not return Harry as promised following a visit. Mallory flies to the US to bring Harry home and soon finds herself on an unlikely

road trip across the country, with three retirees on the run from their Brisbane care home. On the way she meets kind, caring and handsome stranger AJ, who helps the quartet when their vehicle breaks down in pouring rain. “I wanted something nice to happen to Mallory. She’s such a determined person and in some ways she is naive. It was nice to find somebody who didn’t exploit her strengths and appreciates what she is like as a person. I like to write about people who treat each other well,’’ Charlotte says. “I always gravitate towards bigger stories, it’s important to me that my heroines are always on some kind of journey.” Writing was perhaps an unlikely journey for Charlotte. As dux of Moreton Bay College, Manly West, a career in medicine beckoned. But after finishing degrees in engineering and medicine, she discovered her passion for writing. “I was always good academically, and awesome at passing exams, but I had never had the experience of being drawn into something I found deeply satisfying until I discovered writing,” she says. “It’s the only epiphany I’ve had, when I realised people could write books seriously as a career.”

The author of The Notebook retains his talent for tear-jerking prose. Tru Walls and Hope Anderson meet and fall in love on a long weekend at Sunset Beach in North Carolina. But it’s complicated, and they are forced to make a gut-wrenching choice. Should Tru, a divorcee and devoted father of one, leave his home in Zimbabwe to be with Hope? Or should Hope, with her gravely ill father, move? Warning: this yarn will have you crying buckets.

Even the happiest of couples have their ups and downs but Jeanie and Harry Mortimer never expected to face their biggest test at their golden wedding anniversary party. With the clan all there, an uninvited guest arrives in the form of Frankie Carlyle – Harry’s grown-up daughter from a secret affair. The news rocks the Mortimers to their core and triggers further shockwaves. Heartwarming, all-too-human characters make this a tale of pure delight.

Fiona Purdon Whether she is reading or writing a book, Charlotte Nash favours a good oldfashioned happy ending. So no wonder she was drawn to the romance genre. “It’s one of my things – when I read, I like to feel uplifted at the end of the story so I want to provide endings for my readers that finish that way as well,’’ she says. The Chelmer resident is living her own happy ever after since she married “good guy hero” Kevin 13 years ago, after they met while both were studying engineering. “We met at university but found love in Europe. Kevin had a job in Slovakia so in the ultimate grand gesture I spent thousands of dollars to fly around the world to see him. I did it for love and we have been together ever since,” she says. While Charlotte’s sixth novel Saving You continues her trademark method of tackling meaty issues and themes, she

always makes sure there is also plenty of joy and laughs. “You need to include drama and depth to appreciate the beautiful things. It’s important to balance light and dark,’’ the 39-year-old says. So in Saving You (Hachette, $30), Brisbane single mum and heroine Mallory

The polished interior and moody lighting gives Spice Central a uniquely romantic vibe for a hotel restaurant. The food – I have the steak with prawns – is mouth-wateringly delicious and the service quick and friendly, meaning we are able to get out and about while the night is still young. WELLNESS

Walking on sunshine Be kinder to your feet by choosing designer heels that look good, feel great and leave arch rivals behind Humans were never designed to wear high heels. And while they may look good from the outside, if they’re no good on the inside, they could be causing irreparable damage to your feet. “Walking in high heels alters joint angles which, in turn, increases the work placed at the hip and knee. This can predispose long-term wearers of high-heeled shoes to pain anywhere from the back down through your lower limbs,” says Caroline McCulloch, a Brisbane podiatrist and physiotherapist turned footwear designer. “Forefoot pain such as metatarsalgia and Morton’s neuroma are common foot pathologies caused by the forefoot being overloaded in high heels. The higher the heel height, the worse it is for your feet.” Caroline says pressure under the forefoot increases significantly with increased heel height. As the height of the shoes increases, the peak pressure shifts towards the big toe joint and overloads it. “The big toe joint is a crucial one, so damaging it can lead to myriad secondary foot problems,” she says.

“Long-term wearing of footwear that increases forefoot pressure (rather than the occasional increased pressure when you wear naughty shoes to special occasions), is responsible for nasty foot symptoms, secondary to wearing high-heel shoes.” So if you like to rock a bit of height, look for a healthier brand for your feet, such as FRANKiE4 – the footwear range created by Caroline. “Our high heels exist so women can enjoy the fashion of a high heel, yet still feel comfortable. The hidden functional footbed helps support and cushions the forefoot,” Caroline says. “Our specialised footbeds are dual density, meaning they have a soft outer layer to provide cushioning, and a firm under-layer to provide heel and arch support. Cushioning and support is biased to where it is needed in a high heel style. “The designs also ensure adequate width across the forefoot to minimise compression. This helps enable the foot to function as well as possible at a high heel angle.” Clever or what?

Do not disturb Be inspired by some of the world’s sexiest hotels, from luxury villas to a scandalous English estate

NIHI SUMBA SUMBA, INDONESIA Once upon a time, a low-key beach hostel occupied Nihi Sumba’s stretch of sand – boy, talk about an upgrade. Fashion mogul Chris Burch and hotelier-supremo James McBride clubbed together to re-imagine this paradisiacal plot of land, swapping the original frill-free sleeping quarters for 28 amped-up villas. They sealed the deal with the addition of a private beach with watersports facilities, a spa set in a sheltered creek framed by pandanus trees, an equestrian centre, a beach cinema and enough wining and dining options to satisfy the entire cast of Point Break. (Bring your board, by the way: this is surf central.) V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

Bedtime Marrangga Wave Front One-Bedroom Villa: Isn’t it time you slept al fresco on a cliffside “bale”, perched on a platform with jaw-dropping sea views? You can do exactly that at Marrangga (mosquito nets will ensure you slumber in unbitten peace). Of course, if you prefer to catch 40 winks inside, the king-size four-poster is pretty tempting, too. Acknowledging that nature really is rather special in these parts, Nihi Sumba’s owners sensibly equipped the villa with a private garden, an outdoor shower and dining area, and a private plunge pool with a terrace. The conical roof, thatched with alang-alang grass, honours traditional design; added local flavour comes courtesy of Sumbanese antiques, island wood and ikat prints.

Worth getting out of bed for Take one of the hotel’s steeds for a canter along the beach or trot through the bush. (You could also hire motorbikes and zip around the island.) Dip into the astonishingly aquamarine waters of the Weekuri lagoon. Visit a local village and watch ikat fabrics being made, or admire the majestic stone tombstones that are dotted about the island. Keen surfers can acquaint themselves with the world-famous break, nicknamed “Occy’s Left” in honour of champion surfer Mark Occhilupo. Perfect your vinyasas with a private or group yoga class at the hotel. Journey to a secluded valley (and its quartet of couples’ treatment rooms) for the NihiOka Spa Safari: choose an aromatic oil and indulge in a stressbusting massage with views of paddy fields. The walled garden is where John Profumo first clapped eyes on Christine Keeler

CLIVEDEN

CLIVEDEN BERKSHIRE, UK Cliveden’s seduction begins before the bedroom: its metaphorical striptease starts as your car purrs down that rolling drive towards the Italianate mansion that awaits. As scandalous pasts go, Cliveden’s takes some beating: the estate was built as a love-gift for the Duke of Buckingham’s mistress, the Countess of Shrewsbury (her enraged husband challenged Buckingham to a duel – losing his life in the process). Fast-forward a few centuries and the walled garden is where John Profumo first clapped eyes on Christine Keeler, as she put the swimming pool to the test. (It passed with flying colours, if the politician and showgirl’s infamous ensuing affair is anything to go by.) Have your own dissolute-or-otherwise romance at this magnificent manor, which has an aristocratic fun side: cue a snooker room, tennis courts, a boathouse with three boats, and a helipad. Added charms include a chandeliered, portrait-lined restaurant and a whisper-quiet spa with two al fresco hot tubs, set in rose- and lavender-lavished gardens. Bedtime Prince of Wales Suite: Judging by his eponymous suite, Prince Frederick (an 18th-century Prince of Wales) knew a thing or two about romancing. This is no time to play the shrinking violet: take your cue from the suite’s passion-red living room and king-size bed, swathed in heavy, 28 BRISBANE NEWS February 13-19, 2019

emerald-green fabric. The drama continues in the opulent ensuite bathroom, festooned with dark-red frescoes. Regency-style furnishings, an ornate fireplace and traditional artworks up the ante even further. If you can tear your eyes away from each other and the regal decor, the suite overlooks the parterre gardens, where you just might spy a tabloid-worthy scandal unfolding. Worth getting out of bed for Cliveden has a mini-flotilla of boats, so take to the river with your sweetheart (champagne, strawberries and a straw hat tipped at a rakish angle: highly recommended). Indulge in a pampering session at the spa, where treatments commence with a footbath and a chinwag with a therapist about your needs. If the thought of cream-slathered scones makes your pulse quicken, don’t miss afternoon tea in the Great Hall, which earns its name – and then some. Head to the pool: scene of historic liaisons dangereuses. Increase the likelihood of your own poolside Profumo moment by bringing your most come-hither swimwear. (When not swimming naked – as she was when Profumo spotted her – Christine favoured a natty striped one-piece.)

PALAZZO MARGHERITA BASILICATA, ITALY In a roundabout way, we have Francis Ford Coppola’s grandfather to thank for Palazzo Margherita. Nonno Coppola

hailed from the small southern Italian town of Bernalda in Matera, and it was while exploring the historic region that his famous grandson first encountered this then-crumbling palazzo. Spotting its potential, canny Francis lavished love, time and attention on its transformation, used it as a wedding venue for his daughter Sophia’s nuptials in 2004, and turned it into a luxury hotel. Movie-makers should clearly turn their hands to boutique bedrooms more often. Palazzo Margherita’s box office-smash attractions include suites styled with Don-worthy decadence, romantic gardens with a peaceful pool, rustic home-cooking, charming staff and a trio of bars. It goes without saying that there’s also an opulent screening room – plus Francis FC’s personal film collection, for guests to dip into. Bedtime Suite Nine: Forget the director’s seat – this is the director’s suite: Coppola’s preferred sleeping quarters, which he designed himself in honour of his Tunisian grandmother (hence the bold, teal herringbone bejmat-tiled floor and kaleidoscopic ceiling). No doubt his grandma would approve of the gardenspying, fully furnished terrace and the suite’s Art Deco-style black-and-tangerine fireplace. The bathroom is no shrinking violet: it’s decorated in colour-pop patterned tiles and white marble, with a roll-top bathtub and a separate shower. Sit and pen your Coppola-worthy script at the

large Italianate writing desk, facing the three arched windows. Worth getting out of bed for Take free cookery classes with the resident chefs: you’ll go home armed with nonnaworthy tomato sauce-making skills. Potter around Bernalda, a petite and peaceful medieval commune with a few frescoed churches, a smattering of historic monuments and a castle. Hop in your car for the 40-minute drive to Matera, which has starred in several films, largely thanks to the incredible Sassi di Matera and their prehistoric cave dwellings. The Musma (Museum of Contemporary Sculpture), housed in a decaying palazzo, offers a dramatic backdrop to the art displayed within. Beach bunnies can adjourn to the seashore, where suitable-for-sunbathing areas are dotted along the Ionian coast; the hotel can sort access to beach clubs on the Marina di Pisticci’s pale sands. Request a private film screening for two in the Salon, whose design was inspired by neo-realist maestro Luchino Visconti.

SIX SENSES NINH VAN BAY NHA TRANG, VIETNAM Where a white-sand beach meets the towering mountains, lush jungle and the East Vietnam Sea, you’ll find Six Senses Ninh Van Bay – well, once you’ve hopped on the hotel’s private boat to get there, that is. therapists. There’s a quiet communal pool, but most guests loll about in their private one or in the sea, only returning to dry land for generous helpings of seafood hot pot and banh xeo (stuffed savoury pancakes) at the restaurants, or indulgent treatments at the world-famous spa. If you want to bump into anyone other than your fellow guests, local fishermen will take you out onto the waters. Bedtime Rock Pool Villa: This thatched villa-onstilts is nestled into boulders the size of a giant’s football, within diving reach of the sea. It’s tucked away on the secluded

western area of the bay, accessed via a scenic hilltop staircase. Items you’re unlikely to have back home include: a handcrafted wooden bathtub and the sea-surveying deck with private plunge pool; there’s also an al fresco shower. Toffee-hued wood dominates the villa’s interior, which glows like golden syrup when the sun shines (often). Worth getting out of bed for Make the most of the resort’s LIFE (leisure/interest/fun/entertainment) centre: tackle the waters by water ski or catamaran, or duck below the surface for snorkelling or diving. You could also

island-hop by boat or visit a lobster farm. Early birds catch the fish – so skip snoozing and spend the morning with the friendly local fishermen, who will take you out on their boats, and show you how to prep the nets and lure in the glittering catch. Landlubbers could chase waterfalls, embark on hilltop hikes to hidden coves or try a cookery class. Indulge in the spa’s Vietnamese Wellness Journey: a traditional bamboo massage with suction cups, a reiki crystal facial and plentiful servings of fresh fruit, vegetarian handrolls and tea from the organic garden. Don’t miss the twice-weekly starlight cinema at Drinks by the Beach bar; you could catch

a classic or a new release, viewed in a setting that’s sure to make your local silver screen look a little lacklustre.

Beat the summer heat Sales administrator at Cosmopolitan Shutters Belinda Wolfe says now’s the time to order window shutters. “We are in our busy season and prices have never been more affordable than they are right now,” she says. Belinda says shutters are the ultimate window covering. “They can be used inside and outside the home to offer privacy, light control, and to block out the summer heat as well as being energy-efficient,” she says. “Whether you are building a new home or replacing existing window coverings, there isn’t a window treatment that looks better, lasts longer and insulates more efficiently than our internal Thermoshield shutters.” The shutters come in a range of colours and carry a lifetime warranty. Made from a 100 per cent poly-resin material that looks and feels like wood, Belinda says the products from Cosmopolitan Shutters never need painting and will not fade, crack, peel or chip.

“For outside areas, we recommend our Louvreshield range of aluminium shutters; they are hard-wearing, easy to clean and can be custom-made,” Belinda says.

Top tips to make space with the new school year It’s the start of another school year and storage is key for parents adapting to new family and lifestyle changes. Home renovation and design platform Houzz have these smart tips to apply to the home for a smooth transition: Be generous with storage. School books, uniforms, bags and books can quickly accumulate into mess when the children get home from school. Readily available storage compartments are a nifty solution to this problem; think units, boxes, baskets and also food storage containers, all available in an array of designs and colours to suit your home. Create a study nook. A designated studying area is a great way to get children focused. Younger children may prefer a more communal study area where they can easily access their parents for questions, while older kids may like an area that is closed off with no distractions. Include cushions, posters, and cute stationary to inspire creativity and comfort. Assemble a command centre. Keep track of the family’s schedule during the term with a wall calendar, planner, pin board or blackboard; these can be

LAST WORD

Phil Brown They are big, hairy and apparently they pong something awful and please don’t say that sounds like someone you know. That would be rude Did you notice that there have been some new yowie sightings in the Gold Coast hinterland recently? It must be true. I read it in the newspaper. It was a riveting yarn about a truckie who had an encounter with one on a hinterland road. What do you mean there’s no such thing as a yowie? Don’t let them hear you say that up Kilcoy way. The yowie is a tourist attraction up there. What is a yowie? I’m glad you asked. The yowie is usually described as a hairy, apelike creature standing 2.1m to 3.6m tall. They have huge feet and look like Chewbacca from Star Wars. They are big, hairy and apparently they pong something awful and please don’t say that sounds like someone you know. That would be rude. This creature is believed to have its roots in Aboriginal folklore and since European settlement there have been thousands of sightings. As a teenager living on the Gold Coast I was often

hearing of yowie sightings in the mountains nearby and I became so fascinated by the legend of the yowie that a friend and I camped out once west of Mudgeeraba and we engaged in our own yowie hunt. There was a lot of rustling in the bush in the dark but we couldn’t be sure it was yowies. We didn’t see one but that doesn’t mean they are not there. I’m a believer in such things and when I was trekking in Nepal I spent half my time looking for yetis and I have tried to spot bigfoot (also known as sasquatch) in Canada too, but I haven’t come up with anything yet. But I do watch those programs on cable about searching for bigfoot. When I was a young journalist I used to write for the now defunct Australasian Post magazine which published wacky Australiana and I got to interview Rex Gilroy who was the go-to man on yowies back then. I notice a bloke called Dean

Harrison mentioned in recent newspaper articles and he is described as a “cryptologist and yowie hunter” – a noble profession. I must catch up with him and have a chat about that. We also have bunyips (of course we do) which are another matter altogether because they live in water. There’s a well known bunyip that lives in the waterways at Lowood and it has been spotted again in recent years. I must head out there and have a look. And some time this year I intend to holiday in Tasmania and let me assure you that while I am there I will be keeping an eye out for the thylacine, the Tasmanian tiger, which they reckon went extinct years ago. I beg to differ. I reckon the thylacine is still out there running around dodging bunyips and yowies. Now if you’ll just excuse me I have to go. I have a lunch engagement with Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison and Roy Orbison.
