This week... Celebrity chefs, music curators, pillow menus, luxury day spas, rooftop bars and arguably the comfiest beds this side of the Ritz Paris ... there’s a lot to love about Brisbane’s latest crop of luxury hotels. Not surprisingly, our writers jumped at the chance to review these glamorous new establishments and you can read about their experiences in our ‘staycation special’ on P8. A good time was definitely had by all – proof there is much to be said for a mini-break that does not involve a flight or a lengthy car trip. Also this week we chat with dancer Jade Wood, star of The Australian Ballet’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (P14); fast track your beauty routine (P21); and present pretty accessories for little girls’ bedrooms (P26). Enjoy the issue.

THE CHAT

Fathers and sons An actor grapples with age-old family dynamics in Arthur Miller’s classic Death of a Salesman Fiona Purdon

I

t has been 45 years since Arthur Miller’s classic Death of a Salesman was last performed by Queensland Theatre. The rare gift of performing in such a pivotal work is not lost on Brisbane actor Thomas Larkin who plays Biff, the eldest son of salesman Willy Loman. “Biff Loman is one of those characters that a lot of actors hope to play at some stage in their career because it’s an incredibly juicy role,” he says. “Arthur Miller, not unlike Shakespeare, was really good at looking at the psychology of a character. He takes apart surgically how we function on a mundane dayto-day basis … then Miller throws his characters into impossible situations.’’ The classic, which made its Broadway debut 70 years ago, covers 24 hours in the life of failed New York travelling salesman Willy Loman (Peter Kowitz) and his family. At the heart of the piece is Willy’s relationship with Biff, a college football star who has been unable to find career success. “Arthur Miller has described this play as a father-and-son love story. The play explores the tense, tender and tricky relationship between Willy and Biff,” says Thomas, 32, of Teneriffe. “It’s about a father wanting to be a success and putting all of his hopes, desires and thoughts into his oldest son.’’

The nine-strong cast, directed by Jason Klarwein, has had an extended rehearsal period to ensure “a thrilling’’ experience for audiences. “When dealing with something which has been bestowed the label of ‘classic’, it is inevitable that it is accompanied by the weight and responsibility to do it justice,’’ Thomas says. “The classic status of Death Of A Salesman has endured because it is a play which speaks to many … including to people in Brisbane today. Ultimately this is a play about family and the layers of humour, tragedy, hypocrisy, lies, loss and love that exist at some time in almost every family.’’ This year Thomas celebrates 10 years of active employment in the industry. As well as acting, including building his profile in Los Angeles, Thomas has also ventured into teaching and theatre producing. A talented AFL footballer while at university in Melbourne, he initially considered studying physiotherapy before answering his “calling” to pursue acting. “Even though it hasn’t been an easy path, the tussle is worth it. “I’ve always been a curious person and as an actor I can channel that curiosity by exploring characters and their worlds.”

A night on the town Should you stay or should you go? The answer’s obvious, with Brisbane’s newest crop of luxury hotels. From ultra flamboyant to the elegantly chic, these glamorous haunts make it easy to stay a little longer W Brisbane, city Brisvegas has never seen anything like it. With a giant golden thong in the foyer, purple beetles climbing the lift walls, and shiny pineapples as ubiquitous as prawns on a barbie, the new W Brisbane hotel is cool, kitsch and ready to party. While the grand design includes bold, contemporary artworks and more colour than you can poke a glow stick at, it’s the attention to detail that impresses. Take the welcome mats in the lifts that are changed thrice-daily, from Good Morning to Good Afternoon and Good Evening; the motion-sensitive neon room numbers that change colour as you pass by; a concierge on hand via WhatsApp; DJs in every bar; and edible lipstick ‘pops’ in the Away Spa lounge. It would be exhausting if it weren’t such fun. Our room is a Marvellous King Suite, one of 312 guest rooms. Spacious, funky and bright, it has river views and sleeps two but a glamorous sit-up bar for four invites guests to bring friends. After a seamless check-in, a stressful week calls for a visit to W’s Away Spa – an invigorating exception in an industry dominated by neutral tones and dolphin music. Imagine rocking up to a slumber party in a glitzy nightclub, complete with tempting cocktail menu, and you’ve got it. 08 BRISBANE NEWS January 30-February 5, 2019

The treatment menu makes for a fun read (Needle-less to Say facial anyone?), but once you’re in a therapist’s hands, it’s all business. The Corrective Objective facial targets my fine lines, while the therapist offers a skin diagnosis and tips. Nightfall brings cocktail hour, with the choice of the Living Room Bar, or the glamorous WET Deck poolside bar. There’s no time to linger though – our table at Three Blue Ducks awaits. ‘The Ducks’, including chefs Darren Robertson and MasterChef 2012 winner Andy Allen, have wildly popular sister venues in Sydney and Byron Bay. Roasted Moreton Bay bugs with charred cavolo nero and XO butter are a standout, with local craft beers, and the novelty of wine ‘on tap’. Breakfast at the Ducks is one for the personal ‘best hotel breakfasts ever’ file. From Asian-inspired hot bowls to a side of hot smoked salmon with lemon dill sauce, it’s a tour de force of flavours and choices. W Brisbane’s glitz and glamour doesn’t so much challenge notions of restrained good taste as trample all over them in glitter-encrusted kinky boots. It’s clever, creative and spectacular fun; those lacking a GSOH should probably stay at home. The Calile Hotel Fortitude Valley

FUNKY TOWN … The Wet Deck pool at W Brisbane; and the relaxation pods at the hotel’s Away Spa.

It’s the hotel the hip crowd has been waiting for. Combining Queensland’s subtropical style with South Beach cred, this oasis in the heart of Fortitude Valley’s fashion district is drop dead gorgeous. Start your stylish stay with an Aperol spritz in the Lobby Bar, where you can watch the designer-clad locals go about their day, then mosey on up to the glamorous pool deck. Whether you’re a swimmer or a spectator, you can’t fail to be impressed by the chic design, sparkling blue water, and shaded cabanas. After your requisite laps, allow for a tranquil hour or two at Kailo Wellness Medispa – a sanctuary under the arches of The Calile that offers cosmetic procedures; facials using the Ultraceuticals range; beauty treatments and massages. I was feeling adventurous so opted for some intravenous vitamin therapy under the care of Kailo’s cosmetic physician Dr Edwina Morgan. Said to be the go-to energy-boosting treatment for the smart set, the session saw me attached to an IV drip of a vitamin solution. By the time I was done, I was so calm, all I wanted was a snooze in my room – spacious, modern, with a gleaming bathroom. Think marble vanity and brass taps. Divine. Nap completed, my partner and I returned to the pool deck for dinner at Hellenika – the Simon Gloftis-owned Greek restaurant which took the number one spot in 2018’s Delicious 100 annual ranking of Queensland eateries. The delicious souvlaki and dolmades, washed down with a nice Aussie shiraz, prompted memories of taverna dining during my Shirley Valentine days in the Greek islands. If only my digs back then were as glamorous as The Calile. HANNAH DAVIES Take Me Away Calile Package, from $309/night, The Calile Hotel, 48 James St, Fortitude Valley. thecalilehotel.com.au

Emporium Hotel South Bank South Brisbane One of the best views of Brisbane’s skyline comes courtesy of a rather unusual vantage point – a bathtub. Specifically, a bathtub in a River City Suite at Emporium Hotel South Bank, one of Brisbane’s newest boutique luxury hotels. The chrome spa jets in the long, deep tub wink invitingly; the twin containers of Emporium-branded bath salts beckon with their bespoke scents; and the promised embrace of a plush bathrobe with regal navy piping all but seal the deal. But then sliding into the waters, my gaze slipped over the king-sized bed to clock an uninterrupted view of Brisbane at “golden hour”, that moment when the setting sun reflects off the glass high-rises and bathes the CBD in an orange glow. While the river-facing bathrooms afford stunning vistas, they pale next to the three poolside cabana suites on the hotel’s rooftop terrace, overlooking a 23m infinity pool. Their free-standing bathtubs are front and centre in the suites. Next to the pool is The Terrace, a rooftop bar with living walls, faux furtopped bar stools, a light-up dance floor and more magnificent views. The beauty of the bar is when guests arrive for breakfast the next morning, the dazzling rays provide a perfect excuse for hiding behind dark sunglasses. But there’s little reason you won’t get a good night’s sleep, with pillow and pyjama menus, and other luxuries such as a Bose soundbar in this haven in the city.

The Westin Brisbane, city The only thing better than a luxury hotel with a sky-high swimming pool is a luxury hotel with a swim-up bar in its sky-high swimming pool. The Westin Brisbane has one, and I don’t think I can swim anywhere else now. It’s the only one of its kind in the CBD. Like a layer cake of luxury, the hotel is stacked with these genius inclusions in a tranquil sanctuary above the city hubbub. Opened late last year, The Westin is all chilled-out connoisseur in contrast to its sister hotel W Brisbane, which is pure sequin dress-shimmer. A health and wellbeing ethos permeates every offering at The Westin and our stay in a Westin Renewal Suite gave us the best of them all. From the king sized Heavenly Bed to the Nespresso coffee machine in the fully equipped kitchen, everything in this executive level suite invites you to unwind and recharge. There’s a big dose of fun for pint-sized guests too. A fairylight-adorned teepee appeared in our living room, much to Miss Four’s delight, on our return from lunch. But back to that pool. With panoramic 10 BRISBANE NEWS January 30-February 5, 2019

city views, it’s surrounded by cabanas and day beds but the best seat is submerged at the deep end. Here, bartenders serve up killer cocktails and tempting snacks. But save space for dining at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Eden’s Table. It’s the place to be after a quick tipple at The Charles, an aviation inspired jazz bar on the ground level that transitions from café by day to wine and cocktail bar by night. No need to hold back either; just book in for a session at the WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio in the morning. EMMA SCHAFER The Westin Brisbane, 111 Mary St, city, from $249/night. westinbrisbane.com

FIRST PERSON

Brooke Falvey I had a dark brown fluffy bob, fake pearls from Kleins, and a penchant for plum coloured lipstick and power suits. I thought I looked amazing. Lately my social media feed has been filled with friends and celebs sharing their take on the #10YearChallenge. I love seeing how people have (or have not) changed, but it’s made one thing painfully obvious – the next generation has skipped the awkward phase. For example, to truly appreciate how I’ve improved over the years, we must turn back the clock to the year 2000. I was a fresh-faced cadet journalist who, just months out of school, decided to take my style cues from the perfumed steamroller herself, Jana Wendt. I had a dark brown fluffy bob, a string of fake pearls from Kleins, and a penchant for plum coloured lipstick and power suits. I thought I looked amazing. I was wrong. But not only did I survive my awkward phases, of which Jana was just

V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

one, I ultimately thrived, thanks in no small part to the development of the hair straightener. And those awkward years have become a great bonding tool when I pepper people with questions like: Did you ever turn your hair orange with Sun In? What colour homie pants did you have? (Mine were a tame maroon and dark green – thanks mum, for that fashion faux). And if you didn’t smell of Lynx, Impluse or White Musk, how did you find someone to share a cheeky pash with at the movies? Which is where I think teenagers today have gone wrong. Thanks to YouTube tutorials, they’re sleek and shiny with perfect winged eyeliner and wardrobes that make them look 25 – and they’re barely out of primary school. Even with their fashion misses, they still look good thanks to their perfectly contoured faces and the fact they know

how to work their angles better than a ’90s supermodel. But the fact is they have left themselves almost no room for improvement and future bonding, unless it’s about the days when Netflix would only drop one episode per week. Sadly, they’ll never understand the embarrassment of being tagged in old school photos on Facebook, or being haunted by the family photo where everyone is wearing blue jeans, a white tee and a smile so fake it verges on Stepford. I say we embrace any kind of flashback to the “ good old days”. Not only do those pictures highlight how we’ve changed, both physically and emotionally, but they serve as a cool little reminder of our ability to transform and evolve. FOOD + DRINK

Raise your glass Frikels, pork doughnuts and poutine get tongues wagging at new neighbourhood bar RESTAURANT Tony Harper It’s the fantasy of every suburban craft beer nerd – a dedicated beer bar opening in the neighbourhood. So I am a happy chappy, and so too, I guess, are a bunch of other like-minded folk in the Holland Park catchment, thanks to Three Brews Bar and Kitchen opening at the tail end of last year. It’s a smallish place in a strip of shops on Logan Rd, just shy of the Marshall Rd intersection, with not much of a view aside from passing traffic, but it’s still a pretty nice place to sit and while away some time. There are beers (thankfully more than three), wines and the rest of the stuff you expect from a bar, plus a decent selection of food. The website labels it ‘Tapas’, which I suppose means little plates, easily shared, rather than anything particularly Spanish. The beers are distinctly craft – pales and IPA, Berliner Weisse, blonde and stout. It’s all a far cry from the Gold, XXXX and VB on offer when I first sat on a bar stool. And the taps are (currently at least) given over solely to Brisbane and Gold Coast breweries, which is kind of nice, and guarantees fresh beer. Sometime and somehow the craft beer movement attached itself to American food – sliders, burgers, ribs, pulled pork and slaw. There’s plenty of it to be found on the Three Brews menu including tacos, wings, sliders, pulled pork doughnut and battered pickles. But it spreads its wings far wider to things like stuffed mushrooms, bread and dips, baked rosemary camembert ($18.50, above right), arancini, charcuterie and cheese: Euro meets America. There’s even poutine, a Canadian dish

CRAFTY EATS ... Three Brews brings baked camembert (above) and chilled vibes to the southside.

of chips, cheese and gravy ($13). It’s a casual place – no linen or fine stemware. You order at the bar and rest is table service. Things come out promptly. Jam doughnut ($15) cries out to be tasted, simply because it is so unlikely: pulled pork, chilli jam and sour cream. It’s good ... kooky perhaps, but hearty, inventive and packed with flavour. Sliders ($7 each or two for $13) pay a backhanded tribute to the fast-food chains

with ‘Better Than Mickie D’s’ and ‘KFC’ – beef burger and Korean fried chicken respectively; plus pulled pork with apple and fennel (very tasty); and a mushroom version for vegetarians. Frikels (the battered pickles, $11) are the sort of thing that get their hooks into you and don’t let go. They come with a decent (spicy, but not really hot) chipotle mayonnaise, but it’s the play between the slightly oily batter and the crunchy tang of

the pickles that makes them sizzle. In short it’s a menu that’s broad in scope, but hinged around beer drinking. There’s no pretence to fine food, but there’s quality and competence in the kitchen, imagination and some cunning humour in the mix. And for me, and I guess the other beernerds in the area, the food is merely there to line the belly and support the main act, which is craft beer.

RECIPE

Berry crush Start your day with a bowl of rosy goodness from naturopath and chef Kimberly Parsons Bircher has always been my go-to for morning oats during the lighter, brighter summer months. I rarely crave the cosy warmth porridge offers on a sunny summer morning, however this bircher could easily turn into a bowl of warm goodness in the cooler seasons. If you’re making porridge, simply add all the ingredients except the cup of fresh or frozen raspberries into a saucepan and warm through for a few minutes until the oats are cooked and gently simmering as per normal porridge. Once cooked, remove from the heat and stir the mashed raspberries into the porridge and serve topped with chopped raw pistachio crumbs.

APPLE & RASPBERRY BIRCHER WITH PISTACHIO CONFETTI INGREDIENTS 100g rolled oats ½tbs ground cinnamon 240ml almond milk, or milk of your choice 1tsp vanilla extract 1tbs maple syrup 2 eating apples, grated (keep the skin on)

1tbs sunflower seeds 1tbs pumpkin seeds 125g fresh or frozen raspberries to garnish Full-fat, natural yoghurt (vegan if necessary) Raw pistachios, roughly chopped Bee pollen (optional for vegans)

METHOD Put the oats into a medium mixing bowl, add the cinnamon and stir to combine. Add the milk, vanilla extract and maple syrup and stir again. Now add the grated apples and seeds and stir well. Cover the bowl with cling film (plastic wrap) and refrigerate overnight or for at least 20 mins. If using frozen raspberries, remove from the freezer and place in a bowl to thaw. Once the bircher has soaked, uncover and stir to loosen. You may like to add a little water to help loosen the mixture. Mash the fresh or thawed raspberries slightly using a fork. Add the raspberries to the bircher mixture and stir to combine. The bircher will turn a gorgeous light pink colour. Taste and adjust for sweetness and flavour. You may like to add some extra cinnamon, raspberries or maple syrup. Serve the bircher in two breakfast bowls with a dollop of yoghurt, a sprinkle of chopped raw pistachio confetti, and a scattering of bee pollen, if desired. Keeps for 3-5 days in the fridge. Serves 2

GOING OUT

It’s about your physicality … motion and the journey you take the audience on

Set to star as Alice in Wonderland, this devoted dancer has outstepped the naysayers and is poised for greater things Fiona Purdon

ustralian Ballet star Jade Wood’s softly-spoken manner belies a steely determination. Case in point: when a foot injury sidelined the dancer for months during her debut year with The Australian Ballet eight years ago, she returned stronger than ever. “I’ve always had that passion and drive. I wanted to be a ballet dancer so badly I was determined to rise above it (the injury) no matter what,’’ she says. “It was a hard time having an injury but it laid good foundations for me to become physically strong. I didn’t realise at the time but it was a little blessing in disguise.’’

14 BRISBANE NEWS January 30-February 5, 2019

Jade’s perseverance paid off last year when the Cairns-raised star was not only promoted to senior artist but became the fourth dual winner of both the coveted $20,000 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award and $5000 People’s Choice Award. “I’ve always worked hard, every single day. I’m naturally quite a shy person so it’s been a confidence boost winning the awards. It’s wonderful to have so many people believe in me and I’m now chasing my dream to be a principal.’’ She won the title role in Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 2017 and will reprise the

coveted part at QPAC. “The role has always been very special for me. It’s a huge role to take on because Alice hardly leaves the stage for the whole three acts. “It’s so much fun, I can’t wait to do it again. My favourite scene is the second act, the flower pas de deux. It’s long and challenging and at the end I can barely feel my legs. It’s like running a marathon.’’ The ballet features the characters of Lewis Carroll’s 1865 children’s classic including the white rabbit, the knave, the queen of hearts and a tapping Mad Hatter, says Jade, 27. “The ballet has got something for

everyone: you have your beautiful pas de deux and solos and there is a beautiful corps de ballet scene with the dancers as playing cards. The music score is incredible.’’ Melbourne-based Jade, who visited European ballet companies as part of a professional development scholarship this month, is looking forward to performing in her home state. She has fond memories of being “hot and sweaty’’ in the ballet studio of her mum’s dance school in Cairns. “Every afternoon I was there at the ballet school, joining in classes. I loved the social aspect,’’ she says. By the age of 11 Jade knew she wanted to be a dancer even though she was often told she did “not have the right body’’. Thankfully a new breed of dancer is now welcomed – one with a stronger physique thanks to workouts, she says. “A long time ago there was a perceived image of what a ballet dancer should look like,’’ she says. “Now, being a dancer, it’s about your physicality, your performance, motion and the journey you take the audience on. We have to be physically stronger because we do so many shows. Your body has to bounce back night after night. I’m so focused on health and strength so I can remain injury-free.’’ Jade appreciates her family’s sacrifice in moving to Melbourne so she could attend The Australian Ballet School from age 14. “My mum wanted to give me that opportunity to go to Melbourne and train with like-minded students,’’ she says. It is not surprising that Jade, who is engaged to retired dancer Garry Stocks, has been too busy to set a wedding date. ARTS

Eyes on the prize A touring art show captures the agony and ecstasy of iconic moments in sport Phil Brown Sport is often about so much more than sport, as Play On: The art of sport, now at UQ Art Museum, shows. Sport involves a fair bit of agony and ecstasy, and if you like all sports, you will enjoy Richard Lewer’s painting The Theatre of Sport, showing moments of anguish for numerous athletes and perhaps fans too. This exhibition marks five instalments of the Basil Sellers Art Prize, a $100,000 award established by Melbourne businessman, philanthropist and former competitive basketballer Basil Sellers. The award ran for a decade and Lewer was the last winner, in 2016. Since then, this curated show of finalists has been touring. The exhibition includes work by two Brisbane artists, Richard Bell and Tony Albert, although Tony now lives in Sydney. Tony recently had a major survey show at the Queensland Art Gallery. Richard Bell’s A white hero for black Australia is a classic example of sport and art combining for powerful effect. This painting is a collaboration between him and Emory Douglas, an artist and former minister of culture for the American black power movement, the Black Panther Party, from 1967 until its closure in the early 1980s. The painting celebrates the bravery of three young athletes – Peter Norman, a white Australian, and two black Americans, Tommie Smith and John Carlos – who stood together at their 1968 Olympic Games award ceremony. On the podium, Smith and Carlos raised their fists in a black power salute and Norman wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge to communicate his support. It’s an iconic image according to Richard. “It’s one of the most recognisable images in human history,” he says. “It’s about sport and politics and so much more. It shows that sport is always about more than just sport.” Jacqueline Doughty, curatorial manager at the Ian Potter Museum of Art agrees. “Sport is a lens through which to contemplate society’s most cogent issues, from mechanisms of cultural belonging and marginalisation, gender and race relations to technology’s impact on our physical limits,” Jacqueline says. “It is also a barometer of our changing society.” Play On: The art of sport, until Feb 9, UQ Art Museum, St Lucia. art-museum.uq.edu.au

CRACKED FACADE ... Hugh Jackman stars as disgraced US presidential candidate Gary Hart in The Front Runner; with Vera Farmiga as his wife.

THE FRONTRUNNER (M) hhhhj Director: Jason Reitman Starring: Hugh Jackman, Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons Principled, progressive, charismatic … Gary Hart (Jackman) was a shoe-in for the 1988 Democratic US presidential nomination. Until a sudden, seismic shift in the cultural zeitgeist, which allowed the Colorado senator’s private life to become a legitimate subject for public discussion. The somewhat misleading tagline on the poster for this compelling biographical drama suggests it’s about “the week America went tabloid”.

But the issues canvassed by director Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Up In the Air), in collaboration with fellow screenwriters Jay Carson and Matt Bai, who also penned the book upon which The Frontrunner is based, are far more complex than that. While the filmmakers clearly regard the Miami Herald journalists and freelance paparazzi photographer who stake out Hart’s town house to gain proof of his extramarital affair as bottom-feeding hacks, they are minor players in this gripping, proto-#MeToo political saga. Debating whether or not to report on the story, Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee (Alfred Molina) recalls a very recent past in which he and his colleagues

participated in the extra-curricular hotel activities of the political establishment rather than reporting on them. In the Post’s tearoom, a female journalist offers a passionate and convincing argument as to why Hart’s personal behaviour is relevant to her vote. The Frontrunner initially focuses on Hart’s credentials as a scrupled and idealistic politician. But as the tension mounts, the gloss wears off (and here, Jackman does a good job of flattening his screen appeal). When Hart tells his campaign manager (Simmons), somewhat high handedly, that his private life is “nobody’s business”, the proclamation rings awfully hollow. It’s a textbook case of white male

BEN IS BACK (M) hhhkj Director: Peter Hedges Starring: Julia Roberts, Lucas Hedges, Kathryn Newton Ben Burns (Hedges) is 77 days sober – thanks to an enforced stint in a rehab centre (for which his stepdad took out a second mortgage). When the recovering addict surprises his family with an impromptu visit on Christmas Eve, nobody – least of all him – is confident he’ll make it to 78. But Ben’s Tiger Mom puts up one hell of a fight. Holly Burns (Roberts) is so thrilled to see her troubled son sitting on the front doorstep she suppresses any niggling doubts. Fixing Ben, his sister Ivy (Newton) and their half-siblings (Mia Fowler and Jakari Fraser) a snack, she hugs him a little too hard, laughs at his jokes a few seconds too long. 16 BRISBANE NEWS January 30-February 5, 2019

But when her son’s attention is diverted, she quickly hides the cash, jewellery and prescription pills. Given the serial offender’s track record, Ivy and her stepdad Neal (Courtney B. Vance) are ambivalent about his premature return.

Their fears prove to be grounded when the family home is burgled – yet again – and their beloved dog kidnapped. Determined to put matters right, Ben revisits his old haunts. Holly accompanies him every step of the way, discovering the

entitlement – excusing his shabby, exploitative behaviour as the peccadillos of a great man. This reading is supported by the film’s treatment of the young woman at the centre of the political storm. Donna Rice (Sara Paxton) is given a chance to say her piece in an unsettling scene in which she is manipulated by a young, female political intern, who feels increasingly compromised by the task she has been given. More opaque, perhaps for good reason, is Hart’s relationship with his wife (Farmiga). How could she stay with him, after the revelations have surfaced? Ask Hillary or Melania. But that’s another story altogether.

dark underbelly of her picture postcard town in the process. Ponce, the Burns family’s pooch, is a clumsy MacGuffin, or plot device, and some of the skeletons in Ben’s closet have a femur or two missing. But the two central performances are so compelling such speed humps barely register. Roberts gives everything she’s got – we’re talking the full 240 volts – in a performance that spans rage, terror, unutterable grief and unbearable heartbreak. She’s good cop, bad cop, avenger, champion and confidante. Having recently survived gay conversion therapy, in Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased, Hedges gives a nuanced performance of fear and self-loathing. Directed by Hedges’ father, Peter, Ben is Back has a clammy urgency. It’s a bit onedimensional in places, but the mother-son relationship utterly compelling. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

BEAUTY

Fast track to fab No time in the morning? Make up your face in a mere 10 minutes with these shortcuts to a perfectly polished look Belinda Seeney Do you apply liquid eye liner with a toddler hanging off one leg? Wield a bronzing blush in one hand and smartphone in the other? Professional makeup artists Karissa McLaren and Michelle Gataric of Brisbane’s KM Makeup Studios know mornings can be a struggle so offer masterclasses and workshops to simplify daily beauty regimens. Their Makeup for the Busy Woman ($120) workshop covers how to achieve a polished look in under 10 minutes using minimal products, while a private class ($250) is a more personalised session tailored to you, whether you are a beginner needing to cover the basics or a semi-pro wanting to master the art of contouring. Here are Karissa and Michelle’s top tips for shaving valuable time off your morning makeup routine.

O 1

Group your products

Avoid the temptation to buy lots of different or standalone products. Instead, curate a small collection of beauty products that work together and complement each other.

O

Fine-tune foundation

O

Brush basics

2

Test and trial foundations until you find a perfect match for your skin that can be worn every day. If you want more, select one other foundation to best meet your needs: whether it’s heavier coverage for evenings or sensitivity to weather and climate.

3

Downsize your brush collection. You don’t need a set of 20 – three multipurpose brushes will suffice. Choose a big brush for powders, a mid-sized brush for liquids and creams and a small brush for eyeshadows. V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

O 4

BEAUTY SCHOOL ... Michelle Gataric and Karissa McLaren of KM Makeup Studios

Keep it clean

Clean brushes pick up product better and apply it quicker so invest in a brush cleaner or simply rinse them with shampoo. Wash creams and liquids out of foundation brushes every two days but if you use the same colour palette, you can get away with washing eyeshadow brushes once a week.

O 5

Fancy fingerwork

Using your fingers instead of a brush to blend — and even apply — makeup can save serious time. It’s a personal choice and depends on your skin type and the products you use.

O 6

Prep your eyes

Use your fingers to apply a cream eye base, which works like a tinted primer, to eyelids then sweep eye colour across for fast and flawless shading. The base sets and holds the eyeshadow for up to 12 hours.

O

Two-in-one

O

Brow prowess

O

Pop products

O

Hydrate

7

Invest in products with a dual purpose. For example, a tinted cream or stick that can be used on both lips and cheeks or a blush that can double as a highlighter.

8

Choose a brow product you feel comfortable using and practise mastering it. Whether a pencil or powder, it comes down to personal choice.

9

Apply accessory products over a “base face” to dress up your look quickly. Try winged eyeliner for after dark or a vibrant lip colour to lift a more classic outfit.

10

Pack a hydrating spritz in your handbag and apply during the day. The added moisture not only cools and moisturises skin but revives makeup, so you don’t need to touch up. kmmakeupstudios.com BRISBANE NEWS January 30-February 5, 2019 21

CITY PRIDE … A king of the jungle, and giraffe feeding at Werribee Open Range Zoo; Oak & Vine Restaurant at Melbourne’s Oaks on Market.

Leader of the pack Time flies on a 48-hour Melbourne safari, with a lion’s share of food and fun for all the family Mercedes Maguire People pay a lot of money to get up close to wildlife. But every now and then you get an experience money can’t buy. After a morning exploring Melbourne’s Werribee Open Range Zoo – proclaimed a zoobased conservation sanctuary rather than a zoo – we had the opportunity to handfeed the six resident giraffes. The guide explained these animals have their own heated bedroom to retreat to when the weather cools. And she warned that the unpredictable giraffes were easily frightened, so holding aloft a carrot or branch of leaves is not a guarantee these graceful animals will approach. Lucky for us, Thembi’s tummy won out over his shy nature and he wandered over for a feed, his long grey tongue snaking out to grab the proffered food. After all, giraffes of his size weigh roughly 1500kg and can eat up to 80kg of food a day. Out of nowhere, Thembi sneezed with nine-year-old Evie in the firing line. We tried our best to clean the herbivore’s nasal waste from her hair and jacket. “Now there’s an experience money can’t buy,” a friendly guide offered. “That’s good luck, you know,” said another. Evie remained unconvinced. Werribee Open Range Zoo is unlike any other you will see in Australia and aims to be one of the world’s leading conservation organisations. For visitors, it V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

offers a chance to see animals without cages, in a more natural habitat than your usual zoo. The family-friendly off-road safari is the best way to see the animals. The one-hour ride offers views of bison, the first animals to arrive at the zoo 30 years ago, Mongolian wild horses, antelope, hippos, giraffes and camels, including Vera who thinks she’s a dog and will chase if your safari vehicle slows down. If you’re short of time, a half-day is ideal to experience the zoo, just 30 minutes west of Melbourne’s CBD. With only 48 hours in Melbourne, we chose a central accommodation base, Oaks On Market, which allowed us to leave the car in the parking station and walk to many of the city’s most popular areas. The two-bedroom apartments are large and self-contained with full kitchen and laundry facilities, which is perfect for families. A full buffet breakfast at the hotel fuelled us for a full day exploring the city. The first stop for this feline-loving family was the Melbourne Cat Cafe, Australia’s first such operation opened in 2014 by Anita and Myles Loughran.

A 20-minute walk from Oaks on Market takes us to the large two-storey cafe hidden down one of the city’s famed laneways. Greeted by the reclining reception cat, Lynx, who likes to suss out guests, we take a one-hour slot and head downstairs where many of the 15 resident cats sleep, lounge and play. Not all of the cats are up for a pat or cuddle, but all are curious and some can be coaxed out with the quick twirl of a feathered cat toy. Most of the visitors to the cafe (with coffee, tea and snacks served on the second level) are women in their 20s and 30s, but Anita says they get all kinds of

visitors – a group of bikies even turned up once decked in full leather. And while children are welcome, little ones under eight are discouraged to visit. We were thankful for the onsite restaurant at our hotel that evening. Oak and Vine offers a full menu, including children’s meals, with dine-in and room service options, and a bar. We also took advice from Oaks’ assistant manager, Nishty Mannick, about where to shop and lunch in Melbourne. An Italian meal at Papa Gino’s in Lygon St was a perfect refuelling pit stop after the zoo. The street has dozens of good Italian options from family-friendly cafes and restaurants to upscale options and bars. A wander down the streets off Lygon revealed some great vintage clothing finds. With only 48 hours to explore the city, we may have missed much of what Melbourne has to offer, but this family saw enough to want to return soon. t is no exaggeration to say Catherine and Tony Woodward’s Toowong home was pocket-sized when they bought it and moved in back in 2006. With son Josh, then 3, the family packed into the tiny 80 sqm worker’s cottage, a Queenslander that had seen little more than a lick of paint since 1928. But Catherine, an architect with an eye for design potential, saw its charm straight away. “We spruced up the bathroom and added a bedroom in the first year, to make room for our second child (Lily, now 11) to be born,” she says. “But then for the next 12 years we lived in our home as is, and just made small changes to be able to manage things in a functional way.” For starters, they created a dining space of sorts. “We could eat on the front veranda for most of the year but for the three months of winter it was just too cold,” Catherine remembers. “So we polished up a few planks of wood and installed them on brackets outside the bathroom, the only space available, so that four of us could squeeze around it, just fitting four dinner plates.” But rather than expand their living

decade. “The final result is a product of a number of challenges mostly consisting of budget and site restrictions,” she says. “However, even with those restrictions, we’ve now created four bedrooms, a dining room, a kids’ area, and then a big kitchen and a really comfortable open-plan living area, deck and pool that gives us untold pleasure every day.”

NEW FARM 1300 79 51 18

he had another secret spot waiting. Having one of those stickers would be handy because parking in Sydney is a nightmare and it is becoming more and more difficult here too. Hence the elation when you get a good spot. I would prefer all parking to be free but Brisbane City Council has a pretty good rort going now with street parking and they’re raking it in. Still I’d rather pay their metered fees than enter one of those parking stations in the city where you can pay more than $50 just to park for an hour or two during the day. It’s one of the greatest rip-offs on earth and how they are allowed to extort the public to this extent is beyond me. Weekend rates are OK in some carparks but if you’re just going to be an hour or two, there is still some street parking in Brisbane’s CBD. I got one right out front of where I was going the other day and I was on a

high for about an hour afterwards. When we pulled into the space I just sat there for a few minutes marvelling at it. “How good is this?” I said to my son who just shrugged his shoulder. That sort of parking spot is identified by the Urban Dictionary as a ‘Kojak’, named after the ’70s television cop played by Telly Savalas. Kojak would always arrive at the scene of a crime and get a parking spot right out front. I was pretty happy about getting my Kojak the other day, I can tell you. Parking at shopping centres is a bit of a nightmare nowadays. Recently my wife was parked at Toombul Shopping Centre and she came back to the car and found someone had rammed it and just driven off. No note or anything. The parking there is free but that cost us a pretty penny. If you know who did it or, worse, if it was you ... please do the honourable thing and turn yourself in.

Is there anything better than getting a good parking spot? There’s a certain satisfaction about cruising down the street when all of a sudden a car in front of you pulls out and you pull in, punch the air and shout ...“Yes!” It’s sad, isn’t it, that parking can be such an orgasmic experience. I mean this is Brisbane, right? It’s not New York or Hong Kong or Sydney. We were in the New South Wales capital recently and were squired around one morning by a rich philanthropist friend. I was a bit nervous about this at first because he’s 86 but he is a very good driver and has a natty little vehicle with a disabled sticker. We all need one of them. We went for coffee in Double Bay and he had a little spot earmarked and he just cruised in while everyone else was still circling the block. We felt quite smug. Then we went over to Newtown and

impress Let the outdoors in with this modern Australian design An abundance of space, light and quality finishes are the hallmarks of this contemporary property, which is about a 10-minute drive from Brisbane’s CBD. It has been designed for family living and entertaining, and features five bedrooms and large living spaces that open to the outdoors, including a rear yard with a pool. From the outset, the house exudes plenty of style. The modern facade mixes glass, stone and rich timber, while the interiors boast a
