This week... Escape for some summer fun abroad. That’s the bidding of my horoscope this month and I’m not one to argue with the stars. I’m a Libra after all, very conflict averse. According to this week’s Cover Story (P8) I’m not the only millennial regularly looking to the stars for some extra guidance or a bit of Euro-trip justification. Writer Hannah Davies sits down for a fascinating chat and birth chart reading with astrologer Cassandra Tyndall who confirms that astrology is back in vogue. Speaking of stars, we also chat to celebrity hair stylist Oscar Cullinan (P10), emerging actor Lachy Barnett (P14) and arts editor Phil Brown takes a stroll though acclaimed artist Ben Quilty’s new exhibition at GOMA (P15). Enjoy. Emma *Leesa is on leave

THE CHAT
All that jazz Playing cabaret singer Velma in Chicago comes naturally to multi-talented Alinta Chidzey Fiona Purdon Alinta Chidzey has won the lottery – that is, the musical theatre lottery. The 35-yearold from Melbourne will realise a long-held ambition to play femme fatale Velma Kelly when Chicago opens at QPAC in November. “This has always been the role I’ve aspired to,’’ says Alinta, who marvelled at Caroline O’Connor in the role when she first saw the show 19 years ago as a student at the Victorian College of the Arts. “This was the musical that made me think: I really want to do this. After seeing the show it inspired me to work hard and make it happen … Velma is such a strong character. “It’s a rare opportunity. Definitely the stars have aligned.” In Chicago, we meet cabaret singer Velma in jail, awaiting trial for the murder of her husband and her sister after finding them in bed together. She welcomes the audience with the famous number All That Jazz. “It’s one of the most iconic numbers,” Alinta says. “As soon as you hear that overture, your hair stands on end and then you see all of these fantastic dancers and the (Bob) Fosse choreography,’’ she says. Soon after, chorus girl Roxie Hart (Natalie Bassingthwaighte) is arrested for the murder of her lover, nightclub regular Fred Casely. Initially Roxie and Velma are inmate rivals before becoming friends. “Velma has a lot of personality, she’s not one to be messed with, she knows what she wants and she will do anything to get her

Picture: Russell Shakespeare way,’’ says Alinta, who is enjoying her firsttime working with Natalie. “These women are fun, sassy, sexy, cheeky, strong and confident. “It’s still a relevant story. They stood up to men not treating them well … women need to be treated fairly and respected.’’ Alinta has become a regular on Brisbane’s stages since achieving her musical theatre breakthrough with an ensemble role in Mamma Mia! at QPAC. “I performed my very first show in Brisbane, I had a week of shows at QPAC,
so coming back here to perform in a lead role (in Chicago) is like achieving a full circle,’’ she says. “QPAC is like my second home.’’ Alinta grew up in Melbourne where she studied acting and dancing from the age of 10. It was not until she attended her first musical theatre shows, especially Chicago, that she discovered her career destiny. She is also a jazz vocalist and leads the band Alinta and the Jazz Emperors, inspired by jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald. The band has just released a new album I Got
You. Alinta also has plenty of television acting credits including Neighbours and prison drama Wentworth, where she played a girlfriend of an inmate. Three years ago she performed with Hugh Jackman in his show Broadway to Oz. “What I love about theatre is the instant response from an audience – the live connection, the interaction and hearing the audience laugh,” she says. Guiding stars Younger generations are tuning in to the cosmos seeking guidance, faith and a little bit of hope Hannah Davies
T
hey say it’s written in the stars … or is it? If the adage is to be believed then I really have no control over when I will write a bestseller or have money to burn on a pair of Christian Louboutins. A scary thought, and yet these days it seems more and more people are turning to the heavens, finding comfort in the idea that the universe holds the answers to some of life’s tough questions. It’s millennials leading the charge, in their star-sign emblazoned T-shirts (the fashion world loves the zodiac) and subscriptions to Co-Star – a hugely popular app that helps you determine your birth chart, lets you see friends’ charts, and gives you daily horoscopes. It even offers “your day at a glance” push notifications, such as “get a plane ticket if you can and just go”; “your nervous energy won’t be especially useful today”; “Be someone’s service animal today”; and, here’s a good one, “start a cult”. This resurgence in astrology – the study of the movements and positions of celestial bodies in the belief that they affect lives – rivals the so-called “Age of Aquarius” in the 1960s and ’70s, when people began rejecting organised religion, replacing it with the more malleable concept of spirituality. The current popularity of horoscopes demonstrates the phenomenon in action, with the stars among the most avid followers of the stars. Kendall Jenner says she “sticks to people” because she’s a Scorpio; Taylor Swift describes herself as a “blindly optimistic”

COVER STORY
Sagittarius; and Rihanna warns that, as a Pisces, she’s “never been interested in contemporary friendships”. But often people are looking for a more in-depth analysis of their personality and what the year has in store for them. And if apps are not cutting it, you might benefit from a session with a card-carrying astrologer. Cue Cassandra Tyndall, an astrologer since 2006, who has a growing client base in Brisbane and overseas, and confirms the move back to mysticism is gaining momentum. “Usually when we are experiencing a level of uncertainty in the world people look for certainty in the stars,” she says. “It’s definitely in vogue again. It will probably fall out of fashion again if Christianity rises but at the moment we are experiencing a post-Christian phase and people looking up for some sort of guidance and some faith and hope.” For $222 a pop, Cassandra offers a natal chart consultation, which provides a symbolic diagram of the planetary configuration at your time, date and place of birth and how it relates to your life story. “The premise of astrology is that a person or event that is born in a moment in time will inherit the qualities of that moment according to the ethos ‘as above, so below’, so when something happens on Earth it has a correlation with what happens in the sky and vice versa,” she explains. “People are born into a moment in time and are influenced by the characteristics of that throughout their life. “The birth chart is a snapshot of that moment in time. It plays out in their psychology and in the events of their life. It determines their gifts and talents and what they will struggle with. Then as the sky continues to move on throughout their life and interacts with that snapshot, people may periodically leave that loser guy or switch careers, for example.” It appears we don’t have as much free will as we like to think we do, but
If you get a reading like ‘you have been neglecting the ones you love’ … maybe it can be the wake up call you need
POSITIVE ACTION … Aimee Monement uses her birth chart and astrology readings for insight. Picture: Russell Shakespeare Cassandra says there is “scope to fudge things a little bit”. “For example, some people always have problems in relationships and some people are just destined to be single, but sometimes you can put effort in to overcome the traits that stop you from having a successful relationship,” she says. “Also to be forewarned is to be forearmed. By knowing about hard times that are coming up in your life through looking at your chart you can make provisions or do things differently to prepare. “It’s not always 100 per cent set in stone but I can discuss it with the client and give advice on how to best prepare for what’s ahead.” Resident Brisbane News astrologer Tanya Obreza says the night sky is something that “can absolutely be relied on because it’s based on mathematics”. Tanya say the majority of her clients
now are under the age of 30, reinforcing the view that there is a wave of interest in astrology from the younger generation. “What’s driving them is fear and instability. I hear the same thing over and over about how they have qualifications and have put the work in and done the right thing but they have problems getting stable jobs,” she says. “Once upon a time it was all about love and when they were going to find the right man but these days it’s more about financial stability and financial security.” For admin assistant Aimee Monement (a Virgo with a Gemini moon) astrology is a personality insight rather than a rule to live by. “It’s not something I guide my life by but I have done various birth charts online and the occasional reading,” Aimee, 25, says. “It’s a nice way to check yourself too. If you get a reading like ‘your stars are telling you to be more assertive to get that
promotion’ or ‘you have been neglecting the ones you love’ I think maybe it can be the wake-up call you need.” Having created my birth chart, Cassandra tells me I am a “double Libra” (the sun and the rising sign were both in Libra when I was born) with a Virgo moon. Idealistic but logical, these people are capable of producing real change in the world. I’m told there will be a lot of action for me this year based around the home and family environment, as well as opportunities to push forward in my career. There is no indication of my aforementioned best-selling novel, but as I have yet to even come up with an idea, I can’t imagine it’s going to happen any time soon. I’m hoping for better luck with the Louboutin purchase … watch this space. Tanya Obreza’s weekly Horoscope P59

Cutting edge After three decades in the hairdressing industry, celebrity hair stylist Oscar Cullinan shows no signs of slowing down Emma Schafer
CUT AND DRY ... Hairdressing mogul Oscar Cullinan at his new flagship store in QueensPlaza. Picture: Russell Shakespeare
Hair king Oscar Cullinan is going back to his roots with his slick new QueensPlaza salon in the heart of Brisbane city. The salon, his 15th, opened last month on the corner of Adelaide and Edward Sts only a hop and a skip from the birthplace of his eponymous Oscar Oscar empire. The two-time Australian Hairdresser of the Year, who has tamed the tresses of Paris Hilton, Courtney Love and Miranda Kerr, says it was always his intention to bring Oscar Oscar home. “I remember walking down Brisbane’s Broadway in 1989 when I saw an opportunity (to create my own salon) that I just had to take,” Oscar, 52, recalls. “It was an impulsive decision – I didn’t have much money at the time – but I felt that I just couldn’t walk away.” At that time, Oscar was an enigmatic Irishman who had dropped out of school in County Clare to sweep the floors of his brother’s salon. He learnt to wield the scissors there before moving to London’s West End to hone his skills. He then emigrated to Australia in 1987, where he worked in Melbourne and Sydney before settling

in Brisbane where his name went up in lights. Oscar is now celebrating three decades as the owner/director of Oscar Oscar and employs more than 200 staff. Not a bad outcome for the man who admits he only joined the profession because he liked “wearing nice clothes to work and looking at pretty girls”. “It was such a long time ago now, but I remember when I opened my first salon I was such a big mix of emotions. I was bewildered by the idea of having staff under my care, as well as the demanding feeling of paying rent on the salon,” Oscar says. “These days, I am kept extremely busy working on developing the business. We have expansion plans for Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with no signs of slowing down,” he says, staying tight-lipped on the details. But the family man, who lives on the southern Gold Coast with partner Portia and their daughter Stella, 6, does slow down sometimes. When he does, he retreats to his rural property just north of Byron Bay. And if he’s not there or at one of his salons along the east coast of Australia, you can find him in the ring with four time muay thai boxing world champion Arslan Magomedov. The unlikely pair co-own Fighter’s Haven in Burleigh Heads, and Oscar can be found working out there up to four times a week. And so it goes without saying, Oscar really is your go-to guy for a knockout hairdo. oscaroscar.com.au

LIFE
Alicia Pyke I want to be someone who writes letters. I also want to be someone who prioritises ten minutes of makeup in the morning I have a love-hate relationship with makeup. Love buying the stuff, reading about it, talking about it. Hate applying it. I’m not sure why or when this happened, but a few years ago painting my face daily became a bore. So I stopped. Mostly. But I didn’t stop bringing home little pots of bronze eyeshadow and peachy nude lipsticks. At the time I was working on a weekly women’s magazine, at an office fitted with floor-to-ceiling shelves to house the constant delivery of beauty products. Bags arrived daily and I adored the generous beauty editor who would share the loot in return for genuine feedback.
“Here, try this,” she’d say, dropping off a blonde eyebrow pencil or much-hyped designer blusher for urgent review. So I’d go home, give the product a couple of goes and typically forget about it. The whole experience was fun and I would rarely feel guilty about whether I’d actually use something up before throwing it away. Sounds a bit silly now but bringing home new makeup was as much a part of my work world as meetings and emails. I’m still drawn to shiny pots and palettes full of promise and do occasionally splurge on something new. But I’ve finally realised possessing an
item of makeup is not the same as using it – as the contrast between my overflowing bathroom shelves and frequently bare face proves. Thinking about my love for new beauty acquisitions makes me wonder about all the other things we crave and hardly use. If you’ve watched any of those realityTV shows about hoarding, you’ll be familiar with the sewing rooms people can’t enter for rolls of fabric blocking the door. Or garages overflowing with box-fresh power tools their owners aren’t handy enough to unpack. Groan. We all do it. Stationery is another temptation for me,

even though I couldn’t tell you the last time I wrote a letter. Thing is, I want to be someone who writes letters. I also want to be someone who prioritises ten minutes of makeup in the morning. It’s all about aspiration, of course. Being the person we think we could be: say, someone with excellent penmanship and a glowing complexion. Now I’m aspiring to be someone who sees through the promise of shiny new things and uses up what she already owns. And it starts today with a quick application of mascara.

Simple delights This little sister wine bar is less showy than her nearby sibling, but it’s her rustic dishes that sing loudest RESTAURANT Tony Harper There’s a neat, newish little wine bar named Carl’s in a side street of Newstead, owned and operated by the City Winery crew, just around the corner. It’s way smaller and less glitzy than its Wandoo St sibling, and perfectly different. Having two venues so close together isn’t the madness it could be. What they have in common is the wines that come out of the urban winery under the Gerler label, the few of which I’ve tasted have been very good. Sourced from all sorts of places, but made in Brisbane, they cover a rather contemporary mix of varieties and styles, even some skincontact whites. The Carl’s list is fattened by a small, global collection – champagne, chablis, Cotes du Rhone, some terrific Granite Belt numbers – all available by the glass and bottle. It’s a small place with just a handful of tables assembled along a banquette inside and a few more on the footpath. Most of the space is dominated by the bar, which also seems to double as the kitchen. I reckon the prep is all carried out at the bigger venue. It’s a simple, homely space that’s comfy and welcoming. It’s menu is as pared back as everything else in the place. The website blurb tells us that there’s a focus on locally sourced produce, which

is kind of nice. But the menu gives no clues, with meats and seafood listed with no area or producer attached. This is no big deal, but the occasional nod to a source might add a little gravitas. It’s delicious food. Compared to its sister venue it’s less clever, more rustic, simpler. There are five of us, so we manage most of the menu, leaving alone the simplest of stuff (olives, sourdough, cheese and desserts) but giving the rest a good nudge. There are some creative inclusions, like smoked fish pie ($16) which is slightly
too salty but otherwise bang-on, and little mini brioche – the size of a large gougere – filled with ham and cheese and dubbed croque monsieur ($5 each). But in the end it’s the more grounded, less innovative stuff that does the best. Like a shared plate of sirloin (500 grams from memory) that is gloriously dark and caramelised on the outside and perfectly pink within ($70). And squid ($20) that rests in smallish bits on these black shards of quinoa, dried somehow, flattened, coloured with squid ink and turned into
some health-lover’s crispbread with blobs of cauliflower puree (roasted over coals, blackened garlic, probably some other stuff I’ve forgotten) randomly placed. It’s a wild dish. Potatoes come in halves, skin-on, crisped perhaps in the deep fryer, puddled with paprika cream ($12). They are seriously good but perhaps better tasting than they are good for your cholesterol. And a plate of charcuterie ($30) complete with pickled cauliflower, pickled other bits and pieces. It’s wholesome food. As you eat it you feel kind of holy: think of the stuff your doctor might recommend, laced with a wee bit of the other stuff (that we love) and all packaged in an earthy, picturesque kind of way. It’s a wine bar.

On the lamb A fresh take on an old favourite makes use of best local produce, says Alastair McLeod
s we enter the cooler months, the rich farmland of the Lockyer Valley produces up to 90 per cent of the country’s winter produce. This prodigious food bowl ranks in the top 10 most fertile farming areas on the planet. As well as its reputation for fresh produce, the region also produces world-class beef, lamb and pork. You’ve heard me talk about the importance of provenance a lot on these pages, but here’s why. The average age of a farmer in Australia just over 100 years ago was 21, today that age is almost 70. We are compelled to steadfastly support our farmers or we will lose them. Each July, Regional Flavours shines the light on our best produce, producers, fishers, farmers and growers and reminds us why we should be thankful. We might not be able to change the whole world but we can make changes to our own world by the food choices we make and that is something to celebrate.
FENNEL, CHILLI AND YOGHURT ROASTED LAMB WITH GREEN BEANS AND MACADAMIA NUTS Ingredients ½ tbs salt 1 tsp black peppercorns ½ tbs fennel seeds Pinch Aleppo chilli pepper 8 cloves garlic 5 tbs EVOO + additional 4 lamb rumps, patted dry 125ml Greek yoghurt 3 tbs sherry vinegar ¼ cup currants 1 lemon, juiced 250g green beans, trimmed, blanched and split ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced and soaked in iced water ¼ bunch radish, trimmed, thickly sliced ¼ cup macadamia nuts, toasted and cracked ½ cup flat leaf parsley, leaves picked
Method Preheat oven to 100C. Pound salt, peppercorns, fennel, chilli and garlic in pestle and mortar to a paste. Toss lamb rumps with paste and 2 tbs of the olive oil then place on a cake rack set over a lined tray. Place in preheated oven and cook until the internal temperature reaches 54C. Halfway through the cooking, brush 3 tbs of yoghurt over lamb rump. Meanwhile heat sherry vinegar in a small pot until simmering then pour over the currants, soak for 10 minutes then drain. To finish lamb, heat barbecue or fry pan until very hot. Season with salt and pepper and brush with 1 tbs olive oil, grill for 4 minutes, turning every 30 seconds or so. Remove rumps, cover loosely with foil and rest for 5 minutes before carving. Meanwhile combine remaining olive oil with lemon juice and season. To assemble salad, combine beans, drained currants, drained onions, radish, macadamia nuts and parsley. Arrange salad on plates, carve lamb and finish with a dollop of remaining yoghurt. Serves 4

he is discovered to be heir to the kingdom. “This play is storytelling in its simplest form, that is why it is so great for kids and their families,’’ he says. “Oscar Wilde is so well-known for his beautiful language and how he writes about beauty and a lavish life but he also brings through an undercurrent of humanity.’’ Lachy, 25, of Adelaide, has been teamed with one of Australia’s most accomplished actors Genevieve Picot, (1991 film Proof, and television show Rosehaven), for the two-hander that requires the performers

She has become my tour mum and has taken me under her wing.’’ The audience surrounds three sides of the stage and Lachy enjoys the immersive theatre experience. “The character of the young king greets everyone who comes into the space, we all kind of share the story together. People leave the theatre with beautiful tears, it’s emotional, whimsical and imaginative,’’ he says. Lachy is an openly gay actor who grew up in Adelaide not realising he had indigenous heritage until he was about nine years old. Today, he is a passionate member of the youth-led, socially conscious theatre company Act Now, performing in productions that talk about racism. Lachy originally started a law degree because he is passionate about social change. When he secured a job as an extra for an ABC television miniseries he decided he wanted to learn how to make films. “Then I heard about the drama centre and I got into the course and I went to theatre for the first time. Now I’ve become a massive theatre nerd,’’ he laughs. QPAC Presents The Young King, Jul 23-27, Cremorne Theatre, QPAC, South Bank, qpac.com.au

ART
OUT OF THE ORDINARY … (Clockwise from right) Ben Quilty’s New Bird; Captain Kate Porter, After Afghanistan; The Pink dress; Torana no. 5.
Power of passion From suburban boy to war artist, Ben Quilty explores what it means to be human Phil Brown Looking at Ben Quilty’s paintings makes me think of Yeats. The poet William Butler Yeats to be precise and his poem Easter, 1916, which was about the Easter Rising in Ireland of that year, an armed insurrection against British rule. In his poem Yeats writes … “A terrible beauty is born”. I thought of that in regard to some of the paintings in Quilty, a major survey of Australia’s leading contemporary artist, now on at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). Some of Quilty’s work is beautiful – actually all of it is beautiful ... but sometimes it’s beautiful in a difficult way. Because Ben is exploring the human condition, often in extremis. Ben has an ability to explore existential issues and get to the heart of the matter. But when he deals with issues such as war and the refugee crisis he is not being political or intellectual. He is being human and his art comes from the heart and soul. His searing portraits of Australian war veterans in his series After Afghanistan is an example. In portraits such as Sergeant P and Captain Kate Porter (both in the QAGOMA collection) look at the people who served and the physical and psychological cost. In a painting such as The Last Supper no. 9 he explores human suffering at a time when the world seems to have gone mad. This work and others like it makes me think of Picasso’s Guernica, the greatest anti-war artwork of the 20th century. There are his intriguing Rorschach works with their mirrored symmetry and works from the past including some of his V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

famous Torana paintings. In New Bird, painted in 2017, Ben revisits his budgie theme, painting one of our native birds. One of my favourite works is The Pink dress, a 2016 portrait of his wife, Kylie. It’s terrific. The exhibition is a bit of a family affair and Ben Quilty: Family Portrait, developed with the help of his children Joe, 13, and Olivia, 10, is hands-on and interactive and showing in the Children’s Art Centre for the duration. Quilty was curated by Dr Lisa Slade from the Art Gallery of South Australia where it showed before GOMA, the gallery that Quilty describes as his art “cathedral”. The artist lives in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales but has been a regular visitor here over the years.
He has been showing with Jan Murphy Gallery in Brisbane for more than a decade. In fact at one stage he was here so often he says people thought he was from Brisbane and he didn’t mind that at all. Nor do we. An added extra to this show is the fact that it is showing alongside Margaret Olley: A Generous Life, which includes Ben Quilty’s Archibald Prize-winning portrait of his friend and mentor. While southern galleries have to import their blockbuster exhibitions, we have created one featuring shows by two of Australia’s most loved artists. Just saying. FILM
BOOKED UP … Beanie Feldstein as Molly and Kaitlyn Dever as Amy in Booksmart; Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte on set.
BOOKSMART (MA15+) hhhkj Director: Olivia Wilde Starring: Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever and Jason Sudeikis A couple of high achievers fool around with coming-of-age conventions in this raucous high school graduation comedy. All the familiar elements are there, but they turn up in surprising places and the humour is slightly off centre. That’s what gives this female Superbad its gender-specific edge. At the heart of actor-activist Olivia Wilde’s attention-grabbing directorial debut is the close but platonic friendship between bossy, Harvard-bound Molly (Feldstein) and her socially conscious
bestie Amy (Justified’s Dever). While the intensity of their relationship is relatively common among teenage girls, this one is fleshed out by its peculiar detail. Immersed in their own, private, mutually appreciative, and rather idiosyncratic world, the teenage misfits are quite comfortable with their place on the fringes of high school society. Until Molly discovers that many of her hard-partying classmates have also been accepted into prestigious universities and that the clueless stoner (Eduardo Franco) she had written off as a loser has in fact been headhunted by Google. Clearly, there’s more to life than textbooks and inspirational videos. Having had her worldview turned on its
head, the single-minded swot resolves to rectify her mistake in the 24 hours before graduation by making up for all those missed opportunities in a single night. Surprised by her BFF’s sudden about-face, Amy is brought around by the promise of an intimate encounter with a skater girl (Victoria Ruesga) upon whom she has a crush. Of course, having actively avoided parties for their entire high school lives, the young women have a lot of trouble locating the one they wish to attend. Their first eventful detour involves a sweet rich kid (Skyler Gisondo), his outlandish mate (Billie Lourd), and some unusual strawberries. In the second, they gatecrash the musical theatre-loving crowd’s mystery
AN UNEXPECTED LOVE (M) hhhkj Director Juan Vera Starring Ricardo Darin, Mercedes Moran Don’t let the title fool you; this autumnal Argentinian romance plays out pretty much as expected. However, it’s rare to see the empty nesters’ predicament observed with such attentiveness and veteran Latin American actors Ricardo Darin (Truman) and Mercedes Moran (The Motorcycle Diaries) play their parts exceptionally well. An Unexpected Love tells the story of a long-time married couple who begin to question their reasons for staying together after their son leaves for university. Marco and Ana get along very well, but they break up even better. Although the couple maintain a deep affection for one another – as well as a healthy sexual relationship – they respectfully and lovingly come the 16 BRISBANE NEWS July 10-16, 2019
conclusion that their marriage has run its course. Rejecting comfort, companionship and complacency, Marco and Ana strike out on their own.
Seldom has separation been achieved with so little disharmony. Moving into a friend’s vacant apartment, Marco initially struggles to find his feet. Liberated from her role as a wife and
night – whereupon the berries kick in. The hallucination scene – in which Molly and Amy take the form of two Bratz dolls – is worth the price of admission alone. One of the nice things about Booksmart is the girls’ relative ease with their sexuality. While they haven’t had much real-life practice, they are open, curious and appealingly direct. There’s an awkward encounter with their former principal (played by Wilde’s real-life partner Sudeikis), who moonlights as a Lyft driver. And another with a pizza delivery man that pays off, with unexpected results, later in the film. Booksmart misses a few of its marks, and some of the characters are a little thinly drawn, but there’s something fresh and almost unexpected about the film’s treatment of material that has already been well explored. Feldstein (Lady Bird, Bad Neighbours 2) is rock solid as the comedy’s alpha female. And Dever is superb as her fiercely loyal gal pal, never once making a predictable choice, but always hitting the right emotional tone. By making her own distinctive impression in a crowded field, Wilde, too, announces herself as a talent to watch. Booksmart is showing now.
mother, Ana blossoms. After an experiment with a flamboyant perfumier, she eventually settles into an easygoing relationship with a man she meets through work. This is a film about love, desire and domesticity – all of which represent significant challenges to a long-time married couple. What sets An Unexpected Love apart is its attention to detail and the natural screen chemistry between Darin and Moran, whose characters are smart, funny and unusually self-aware. Filmmakers tend to concentrate at extreme ends of the midlife crisis spectrum – broad humour or heartwrenching drama. Director Juan Vera goes for the middle ground; this is light entertainment grounded by emotional intelligence. A rom-com for grown-ups. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

Artful moves Vibrant workout mats inspired by a girls’ weekend have proved bestsellers for these creative friends Emma Schafer It was supposed to be their relaxing, annual girls’ getaway but friends Jay Feather and Carolyn Cooke clearly hadn’t switched off. Walking along Noosa’s bustling Hastings St in September last year, the mums were ambling through art galleries when inspiration for a shared project struck. Surrounded by the Sunshine Coast art, the pair dreamt up yogat – limited-edition, art-inspired yoga mats. Carolyn, 37, who lives in Everton Park on Brisbane’s northside, had recently taken up yoga to manage the symptoms of her fibromyalgia, a painful autoimmune disease. Jay, 35, shares her passion for the practice and as a full-time artist living in Bargara, east of Bundaberg, she was instantly brimming with ideas for their artsy workout mats. Together, they hoped the business would inspire women to take more time

for themselves. “I am a self-proclaimed workaholic, and lived on four to five hours of sleep most nights,” Carolyn, a motherof-three and Queensland Museum project manager says. “I knew my lifestyle was going to catch up with me at some point, but I didn’t think it would hit in my 30s. “It wasn’t until I was diagnosed (with fibromyalgia) that I sat up and took my health seriously and made a life shift.” Jay’s vibrant and contemporary art was an obvious pick for their debut range, named Flora, which features three of her original works: Sunset Blooms, Cups and Curiosity, and Always Spring. A second range named Prana featuring artwork by Queensland artist Tamara Armstrong has just been released for pre-order. Yogat mats are $109 each and made from tree rubber using materials that are 100 per cent biodegradable. They are machine washable. yogat.com.au

PAVING Paving is an important consideration with balconies, with many factors coming into play here. Some of the first things you’ll need to look at are the weight and thickness of the pavers. Your balcony can only take so much weight, so the pavers can’t be too heavy. And then you need to see how much step down there is between indoors and outdoors – you don’t want a paver so thick you’d need to step up as you step outside. I like the appearance of real stone but for weight and thickness reasons, it is often ruled out. Luckily, a great range of imitation stone comes in the form of thin and light ceramic tiles. These are very durable and easy to maintain. For smaller balconies, I recommend blending the paving with the same tiles as the internal space; this creates a seamless transition between inside and outside and makes the outdoor space appear larger. Where this is not possible, find a tonally similar material. Small spaces will always appear larger if they are not broken up in terms of paving materials.
Small is beautiful, as landscape designer Paul Bangay reveals, with tips to make balcony gardens feel more spacious
MATCHING COLOURS Small spaces also appear larger if vertical wall colours are consistent as well. If you have space to use troughs, try to select fibreglass or other lightweight materials that can be coloured and textured to match the external walls of the building. These are available in a range of sizes or can be custom made to fit the space. The other material I use for troughs is colourmatched aluminium; this can take its cue from door or window trims or other internal metal finishes. The important thing here, whatever you choose, is to ensure it is as light as possible. All buildings have issues with weight loading. The volume of wet soil is critical as is the weight of the container itself.

GARDEN
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Paul Bangay is one of Australia’s most high profile landscape designers. His working life is divided between Australian and overseas commissions; and he spends his spare time at Stonefields, his magnificent garden in country Victoria. In 2001 he was awarded the Centenary Medal for his contribution to Australian landscape design and in 2018 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to landscape architecture.
PLANT CONTAINERS I generally prefer troughs to pots as they have the advantage of allowing you to create the illusion of garden beds. You can fill them with more plants and a greater diversity than you can with pots. They can be linked together with irrigation and drainage, thus solving the problem of hand watering and unsightly drainage water. If there’s no room for troughs, you are probably restricted to pots. If space allows – often in the corners of balconies – I like to use those pots in groupings of varying heights and diameters, which creates interest and diversity of planting. Lower bowls are a good solution if there’s a distant view that you don’t want to obscure with high plantings or features. One major consideration for balconies and terraces is safety. There are building
pays to check with your local authority or building certifier as to the regulations.

If space and other factors, such as lack of drainage and water sources, prevent the use of any planting at all, furniture can be used to make the balcony look interesting. Consider how you’re going to use the space before you select that furniture. Do you want to dine outside or simply sit and enjoy the view? Make sure you choose robust, heavy furniture as you don’t want strong wind to send it flying, causing damage to property or, worse, some unsuspecting passer-by. If the balcony space really is limited, my preference is always for a couple of comfortable low chairs and low coffee table, which can be used for both relaxing
and casual dining. The important design factor is to never clutter the space, no matter how large or small it is. And a few better pieces of furniture, ornaments or pots and plants are preferable to many lesser pieces. Consider the outlook when placing objects, try to frame the view instead of blocking it.
This is an edited extract from Small Garden Design by Paul Bangay with photography by Simon Griffiths, $60, Lantern, available at all good bookshops.

Project success Following accreditation and warranty inspections, Bakers & Co has successfully completed a large industrial project in Acacia Ridge, beating the end of financial year deadline. Sixth generation Queensland painter and director Michael Baker says he has a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw upon. “Times might change, but the
philosophies and principles used by the challenges my grandfather faced when painting the Indooroopilly and Toombul shopping centres from scratch are still the same,” he says. “And my father tackled similar feats with South Bank Parklands and Cairns airport.” He says that, continuing the tradition, the Bakers & Co team are mastering their trade while servicing throughout Queensland with pride. “There aren’t too many building icons that have not had the brush and paint of a Baker painter,” he says. Phil Brown No offence to all you Chrisses out there but I don’t think I look vaguely like a Chris. I’d rather be mistaken for an Algernon or a Julian We were walking into QPAC when someone greeted my wife and then, seeing me, said ... “Hi Chris.” Now as you know that is not my name. I went to say hello back but then stopped myself. I refuse to respond to people who can’t remember my name. “What am I, chopped liver?” I thought. Chris? No offence to all you Chrisses out there but I don’t think I look vaguely like a Chris. I’d rather be mistaken for an Algernon or a Julian. It’s not the first time I’ve been mistaken for a Chris. I was at a function at the Brisbane Club once and someone called me Chris. I had held out my hand in greeting but withdrew it and just walked away.
I’m pretty easy to offend. A friend of mine used to say “you can call me anything, just don’t call me late for dinner” and while that’s funny I don’t agree. Don’t call me anything. My name is Phillip actually but only my late mother called me Phillip. For everyone else it has been Phil for as long as I can remember although I have been called many other things along the way. As a teenage surfie I had a nickname that was based on my surname but that was rather odious and I won’t mention it here. I have been called four-eyes on many occasions, including once in the public bar at a hotel in Miles. We had just settled in for a pie and a beer when I sensed someone
looking at me and I looked up to see a gnarled, ginger-haired bloke staring right at me. “Hey four-eyes, what are you doing in my town?” he asked. I smiled a wan smile, gulped down my drink and left, taking my pie with me. A friend of mine used to call me Phyllis and still does and I have been called much worse. Does it matter though when someone doesn’t remember my name? Besides (and with apologies to William Shakespeare) doesn’t a rose, by any other name, still smell as sweet? I ask, however, that you please refer to me by my actual name, if you don’t mind and if you can’t remember it, “mate” will
do. That’s how I roll. I must confess that I often can’t remember some people’s names. When this happens though I just avoid them, rather than getting it wrong. Or if unable to escape I use that “mate” or just chat until it dawns on me. Forgetting a name is OK but getting a name wrong is unforgivable. Maybe it’s refreshing that occasionally someone has no idea who the hell I am. A lady I ran into recently, also at QPAC, recognised me and said she knew me but apparently couldn’t quite work out why. My wife said at least it was nice that she recognised me but I pointed out that it didn’t count because she had no idea who I was. Go figure.

Place to escape An enviable position with views across Orleigh Park to the Brisbane River and beyond brings a sense of tranquil escapism to this tri-level residence, according to listing agent Jermaine Jones. “Finished just two years ago, this superbly appointed residence with its tranquil river and parkland views and beautifully detailed finishes delivers a residence unique to this part of the river which is just five minutes from the CBD,” Mr Jones says. Elegance is at the fore in the stylish kitchen, which features sleek, refined finishes including neutral Caesarstone benchtops and glass splashbacks, along with a walk-in pantry and soft-close cabinetry. An outdoor entertainment area completes this level, connecting the house with the saltwater pool and deck.
