This week... The only thing I have ever invented is an excuse, so I am in genuine awe of Alex Gransbury who creates the most marvellous gadgets – everything from pizza scissors to the next generation in spice mills – to make our lives easier. Writer Amanda Horswill toured Alex’s Dreamfarm factory in Albion to get the inside track (P8) on this award-winning family business and its crack team of dreamers. Also this week we step inside a house that’s the epitome of James Bond cool (P24, right), chat with actor Nicholas Hamilton, who appears in the Queensland-filmed war movie Danger Close (P14), and review the latest thrillers from Aussie authors (P28). Enjoy the issue.

THE CHAT

Character driven Riding a rollercoaster of emotions is all in a day’s work for Russian-born bestselling author Paullina Simons

F

irst she writes it, then she falls in love with it, then she cries. After that, Paullina Simons sits back, reflects on her work, and hopes her readers will love it, too. “My ultimate goal when I write is for people to cry like I do and feel what I feel,” says the best-selling US author. And when it comes to her latest novel it seems Paullina, who will visit Brisbane on her book tour next month, is achieving that and more, with Australian readers among the most appreciative. “The fans are embracing and loving this new book,” says Paullina, a married mother-of-four. “They love the mystery. I feel more pressure with it being a trilogy because there is the risk that people might not like the second or third book.” The first instalment of her sweeping new End of Forever trilogy, The Tiger Catcher, tells the story of Julian, whose charmed life in Los Angeles is turned upside down when he embarks on an affair with the mysterious Josephine. She is harbouring secrets that threaten to tear them apart, and so begins an adventure that spans a further two books – A Beggar’s Kingdom, out next month, and Inexpressible Island to be released in December. Paullina, who lives in New York and has written 13 novels, a cookbook, and two children’s books, is delighted with the feedback. “I have a lot of contact with the Aussie fans. They are incredibly vocal on Facebook and I always love hearing from them.” Born in Leningrad, Paullina emigrated to the US in the 1970s with her family and always dreamt of becoming a writer – an

ambition she was forced to place on hold until she mastered English and overcame the shock of a new culture. In 2015, she published Six Days in Leningrad, a memoir about her return to Russia with her father in 1998 – the first time since leaving in 1973. Now she is looking forward to visiting Queensland – and meeting her fans in person. “Hopefully they love Julian and are interested in his quest. I knew I needed to make it good from the start, and I can only hope that I grab their attention.” But The Tiger Catcher is not without its critics. “Some readers were expecting a traditional romance but what they got was a story from the hero’s point of view rather than the woman’s,” Paullina says. “I grew up on male-dominated fiction so I’m used to that, but people who read a lot of my books may not be. “Most of my books feature very strong female characters but in this one we see everything from Julian’s side, his heart and soul, rather than Josephine’s. “I didn’t set out to do it from the male viewpoint but when I saw the story it was his quest for her that I saw. Josephine had to be a mystery to him and to us too until the end of the book,” she says. “It keeps the reader guessing.” An evening with Paullina Simons, Brisbane Square Library, city, Aug 8, 6.30pm; Dinner with Paullina Simons, Grand View Hotel, Cleveland, Aug 9, 7-9pm. trybooking.com

n a corner of a nondescript warehouse opposite the Breakfast Creek Hotel sits a dream maker. It’s an odd looking thing, basically a silver rubbish bin with a perspex window revealing ping-pong balls inside. An orange witches hat, like you see at roadworks, sits on top. But when Alex Gransbury turns it on, coloured lights flash and ping-pong balls fly. He pulls a rope, the hat lifts up and out comes one of the small white orbs. His colleague, engineer Tom Schuster, catches it. Alex repeats the process and another ball is flung in the air. Tom catches that one, too. The balls have something written on them. “Right, so what does a ‘pastry brush mop’ look like?” Tom asks. We are in the factory that is Dreamfarm, in Albion, where Alex, Tom and the team invent and perfect kitchen gadgets. Its colourful range of gamechanging goods include Red Dot awardwinning Clongs (click-lock tongs that sit up, so you don’t get cooking mess on the bench); Scizza pizza scissors (who knew cutting pizza slices with scissors could be so easy?) and the Smood spiral masher (one-push for smooth mash and it’s also a scraper for easy serving). The company’s stockist list stretches across Australia to the UK and US, and reads like a who’s-who of retail – Myer, Bloomingdale’s, John Lewis. Alex, 37, founded the company 22 years ago in Canberra, with just one product, the Grindenstein, a compact knock-box for coffee grinds, selling it at farmers’ markets and online. Now, working alongside him is a dedicated crew including Tom, design manager Phil Howieson and Alex’s sister Cate McDermott. Their product shelves bristle with more than 30 offerings, including the Ortwo spice mill, released a few weeks ago. “It’s been three years in the making and has taken over all of our lives for the past 18 months. There’s a bunch of different materials in it, glass, nylon, diecast zinc, timber, ceramic, so there was so much to

learn. The biggest relief, and I nearly cried, was when Tom and I were at trade shows in Chicago and Philadelphia, and we found out it had won a Red Dot award. “I mean, that’s like the Oscars of the design industry. It was like getting a big stamp of approval, the world saying, ‘Hey, it’s all been worth it’. But what is really important is to get it into stores and to see how it sells.” The Ortwo is a spice mill that can be used with one hand or two, depending on the speed and size of the grind required. Did the world need another spice mill? It seems the public vote is “yes”. The company ran a kickstarter campaign to fund its initial production costs. It raised half its funding goal in a day, and more than $30,000 from 445 backers in a week. That’s because it’s not just another mill. It looks different, with two handles jutting out the top and a squat glass jar holding the ingredient to be ground. (The jar holds 60ml, the same amount as standard spice jars at the supermarket). In the hand it feels solid, balanced. Sturdy. The two handles can be used with one hand, pressed together like tongs, to produce a light sprinkling of pepper. But grab a handle with each hand and put them apart and the grind is more robust, producing a tsunami of pepper. All the while, its operation is smooth and powerful, thanks to the ceramic grinder (and that means no rusting, like the industry-standard steel models). It’s one of those gadgets that makes you wonder why no one thought of it before. Alex says the company’s culture doesn’t allow their products to be anything less than great. It’s “all killer, no filler” with this family business – Mum Carole first helped Alex assemble their products back in Canberra, and Dad Roger did the books on the weekends. Alex moved to Brisbane in 2007, and Cate, 34, joined soon after. Their brother, John, 39, lives in Brisbane too, but is a scuba diving instructor. Alex says working with family is “awesome”, because of the unique working

environment it creates. “Especially with Dad passing away at the end of last year, we appreciate it more and more,” Alex says. “Mum even does the cleaning here. It came about because she would run her finger across everything. “Cate and I – we have our moments, but you know what it’s like with family. If you have got to have it out, you have to have it out. We have been doing it for a long time, and we are pretty good at it. We enjoy it.” Cate, Dreamfarm’s special projects manager, agrees. “It’s actually really special,” she says. “If we have a barney, we always manage to hug it out. And it’s never because of anything else but that we care so much about what we are doing. “We have got to a place where we genuinely respect each other for what we know and what we bring to the business. It’s really cool to go to work every day and sit next to someone you love and create something you love together.” Back in the workshop, we are discussing if the world would use a “pastry brush mop bucket”. Maybe they would – after all, who hasn’t had to pick stray pastry brush hairs off the top of a freshly glazed pie or glossy roast chicken skin? After all, isn’t a pastry brush just a tiny mop, but for basting? Alex lets me down gently, saying the company has moved away from using the “invention lotto

The hope is that we can create things that are so awesome that they become the standard machine” as a basis for business decisions. “We’ve gone very corporate,” Alex jokes. “We just have bills to pay and kids to feed. If you want to be stocked at places like Myer, the only way you can do that is if you have a complete range. They say, ‘We can’t dump someone else and let you

guys in there until you can offer some key things. You need a whisk and a peeler and a spoon and a spatula and a potato masher and a can opener’ … There are holes in our range that we need to fill.” That’s how they came up with the Fledge – the flip-edge, non-slip cutting board with a juice groove to catch run-off. “Cutting boards are an everyday seller, along with knives and mixing bowls,” Alex says. “People keep trying to add things to it – drawers so you can scrape off whatever you are chopping into the drawer, but it’s just another thing to clean. The holy grail is a board with a set of scales in the cutting board. The problem is that the board would cost $40 or $50, so it’s no longer something you’d use every day, and it

would be hard to make it dishwasher safe because it would be difficult to seal. It would be fantastic, but you’d never use it. “So we came up with the idea of making a board that would weigh exactly half a kilo or one kilo. So all you had to do was put it on the scales and subtract half a kilo or a kilo.” Even something as simple-looking as boards contain a deceptively large amount of design thinking. “Every last millimetre of product exists for a reason,” Alex says. “The hope is that we can create things that are so awesome they become the standard and are still the go-to for our kids’ (generation). There are items that are like that in our lives now, that there has never been anything better. They are so simple yet they are the purest form they could possibly be – they do the job, they are reliable, they are cheap to manufacture. Everyone’s gold.” Kate ventures: “Like the swing-away can opener. We had one as kids and now that’s what I buy.” Alex picks his favourite: “Something I would have liked to create is the jar key. How do you beat that? It’s a single shot of plastic, it solves the problem, and it’s no more complicated than opening a jar.” Tom thinks there could be a close contender in Dreamfarm’s line-up. “The Jot,” he says. Alex smiles with pride. The Jot (short for “just holds it there”) is a suction-cup holder that retails for $5.95 for two. “It originally started life as a mobile phone charging cord, and was going to be retractable with a push button, but that was $15-$20 retail,” Alex says. “But this way is so simple. And we’ve found 1001 different uses for it – holding razors in the shower, the car GPS cable … Getting the material right was the worst part. We went through three different suction cup designs, eight materials ... But I guess if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. “I suppose it’s a way of feeling good about yourself – the thought that you’ve created something no one else has created. That’s always nice.” dreamfarm.com

LIFE

Brooke Falvey I signed up for the choir and was swiftly rejected by my music teacher, Simon Cowell. OK, it wasn’t Simon Cowell but the teacher was equally brutal Whitney Houston famously sang, “I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.” But it seems some teachers didn’t get the memo, or at least, some of mine didn’t. Last week I saw School of Rock at QPAC, based on the hit comedy starring Jack Black, and it had me reflecting on the people tasked with my 12 years of schooling. Mrs Anthon deserves a special mention for helping me hit both my sporting and academic peak in one year. It’s just a shame it was Year Five. Then there were the teachers who made a lasting impact for all the wrong reasons and while their names escape me (it’s not a legal thing, I seriously can’t remember their

V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

names), I do recall how they made me feel, and it wasn’t great. There was the biology teacher who refused to let anyone go to the bathroom (if only I knew back then that I legitimately have a small bladder) and the English teacher who told me I had “no grasp of the language” so I cheekily sent her a copy of my first front-page story. She never replied. But the winner is the teacher who was in charge of my primary school choir. Our history came flooding back as I watched a young girl playing the triangle in School of Rock. My mind flashed back to the early 1990s, when I was a triangle-playing child prodigy. All right, that’s a stretch, but I did play the triangle. Having mastered Hot

Cross Buns on the recorder (a skill I’m now considering adding to my LinkedIn profile), I was given the honour of playing the triangle in the class choir. It sounds sweet, but there was a callous reason behind this decision and it played out on stage at QPAC when triangleplaying high-achiever Summer Hathaway auditioned for “the band”. Summer couldn’t sing, and apparently neither could I. Blissfully unaware of that fact, I signed up for the choir and was swiftly rejected by my music teacher, Simon Cowell. OK, it wasn’t Simon Cowell but the teacher was equally brutal – until faced with my utter heartbreak. While high-achieving Summer was

given the well-suited role as Band Manager, my music teacher said I could join the choir on one condition: I wasn’t allowed to sing. Ever. But I could play the triangle and lip sync. In hindsight, it would have been better for them to be a little less honest and say something like: “Sorry Brooke, we’ve filled our quota of blue-eyed blondes. Perhaps try the papier-mache club.” Not one to be deterred, at least not for long, I found my calling on the stage in the school play. Although now that I think about it, my character was supposed to sing a verse from Time Warp which was “cut due to time restraints”. How odd.

SUBTERRANEAN HUES ... Florist Kitchen and Wine Bar’s moody vibe is offset by a peony-pink interior; and (inset) duck pancakes. Pictures: Mark Cranitch.

Going global Bask in the warmth of this pretty city eatery that dishes up a startling array of world cuisines RESTAURANT Tony Harper That lovely little space that once housed Tank, on the ground floor of Santos Place in the city, is now home to the Florist Kitchen and Wine Bar. Odd moniker hey? And having been there I’m not quite sure how flowers or their keeper pertain to the place, but I’m sure it ties in somewhere. Still it’s an odd choice for me to ask a mate – former Olympic boxer Todd Kidd, plenty of machismo – to lunch. What should we wear?

In the end it doesn’t really matter as we are not surrounded by sprays of orchids and baby’s breath. Instead we are tucked around a nicely spacious table and within minutes settled in with menus and drinks. I’ve always loved the space – there’s something vaguely subterranean about it. It’s moody in a good way, with lots of timber and glass, tastefully scant and (considering its corporate surrounds) quite relaxed. But it has been refashioned from

its days as Tank with a peony-pink limewash on the walls, and a long banquette down one side. It’s prettied up a little, less scant. It’s been dubbed a wine bar, and it has a pretty smart wine list that covers a lot of bases – local, international, conservative, progressive, white, red, pink and bubbly. The highlight of the beers is Tuatara Pale Ale ... but there’s none to be had. Dear oh dear. If the drinks list is broad, the menu is even more so, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner (plus the moments in between) five days a week. And it covers a whole gamut of cuisines, which for me immediately rings warning bells. Jacks of all trades, masters of none? But I am intrigued by a section simply titled Street Food ... nice. And there’s a page dedicated to vegetarian dishes, another to share plates, plus a small collection of mains and desserts.

We stick to the small things. From Street Food it’s fish tacos ($16 for two) – battered fillets on a tortilla, pineapple and black bean salsa and a sweet-chilli aioli, coriander, red onion, tomato. In purest terms it’s a little culturally confused, but it tastes great. Cauliflower pakoras ($15 for three) come on a puddle of tomato relish and topped with a handful of salad. They are very good. Pork belly bao ($16.50 for two) follow a similar theme, this time with pickled vegetables and sriracha, a scattering of coriander. And confit-duck pancakes ($16.90 for two) are same, same, only different ... hoisin sauce, similar mix of herbal matter. So there’s a routine, a sameness, to the makeup of all of these dishes, despite the fact that we’ve covered India, Mexico and China, and that should make me fret. But it doesn’t. They are vibrantly flavoured and have a really good balance of freshness and something more appealing but less wholesome ... like confit duck, battered fish, and slow-cooked pork. It is definitely a menu of broad appeal rather than culinary focus, as is the wine list, as is just about everything at the Florist Kitchen and Wine Bar.

RECIPE

Pot shot

BRAISED CHICKEN, GREEN OLIVES, BAUPLE NUTS, SMOKED POTATO AIOLI

Take the stress out of cooking with a quick and easy option, says Alastair McLeod A one-pot wonder is always a good idea. Heartwarming, delicious and easy to prepare, it’s no wonder our ancestors cooked simple dishes of meat, vegetable and grain. I find this style of dish a great way to minimise wastage. Any vegetable can be used – bulbs, roots, flowers, fruits, seeds, stems, tubers. The other ingredients are pantry staples. The smoked potato aioli substitutes mayonnaise with the more traditional butter and cream in mashed potato. Everything you need and nothing you don’t, like lots of washing up.

80ml extra virgin olive oil 6 chicken marylands, separated into thigh and drumstick 1 large onion, roughly chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 3tsp smoked paprika sea salt 1 red capsicum, sliced 250ml dry sherry

400g can diced tomatoes 2tbs tomato paste 125g green olives, pitted and halved 75g macadamia nuts, lightly toasted ½ bunch oregano, leaves picked Juice of 1 lemon Black pepper, freshly ground

Method Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy based, deep frying pan with a tight-fitting lid, add the chicken in batches. Cook over medium heat for four minutes, turning often until browned on all sides. Remove chicken then add onion, garlic, 2tsp of the paprika, a pinch of sea salt and capsicum. Cook for 8 minutes, or until soft. Add the sherry and cook for two minutes, or until slightly reduced and the alcohol is burned off. P

laying a vulnerable rookie soldier in the Queensland-made film Danger Close was a change of pace for Nicholas Hamilton. The young star had already won international acclaim for playing defiant or mean kids – bully Henry Bowers in the Stephen King blockbuster IT (2017) and rebel son Rellian opposite Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic (2016). “It’s awesome to play the nice guy for once and I love to expand my range,’’ says Nicholas, 19. “I’m an awful person in IT … it is always fun to play the villain and experiment and go wild. In that film I was able to go the full monty in badness. “You don’t want to be pigeonholed as the bully or mean kid, so it’s great to have a role where your sensitivity and vulnerability can shine through.’’ Nicholas was so convincing playing the mutinous son in Captain Fantastic that he

caught the attention of singer Katie Perry at the film’s Cannes premiere in 2016. “I met Katie that night and her first words to me were: ‘I hate you, you played your character well, but I hate you.’ It was cool to have that recognition from someone so huge.” Now Nicholas hopes to win audiences over with his performance as teenage private Noel Grimes in Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, a film based on true events from the Vietnam War. Grimes was one of 108 Australian soldiers from Delta Company, based at Brisbane’s Enoggera base, who triumphed against the odds while fighting more than 2000 Vietcong troops in 1966. “It’s awesome to play a character who parents will think of as their own kid. That is what I hope to achieve,” he says. The actor spent time researching the

battle that saw 18 Australians killed and 24 wounded. “Grimes is the rookie and is feeling overwhelmed,” he says. “(He) was just a kid when he was drafted into the Vietnam War and he was terrified. To actually see enemy running towards you, with malicious intent and wanting to kill you, it’s terrifying.” Danger Close was filmed in Kingaroy and on the Gold Coast, an hour’s drive north from Nick’s family home at Alstonville, near Ballina, in northern NSW. During filming, he bonded with the star ensemble cast including Travis Fimmell, Richard Roxburgh, Brisbane’s Anthony Hayes, and Dan Webber, who became like an older brother. “We want to tell this story as respectfully as possible. This movie is the Gallipoli (1981) of our generation. Ever since the week of boot camp we all clicked quickly,” he says. Nicholas, who has played drums for more than a decade and also sings, was about 15 when he snared his breakthrough role in Captain Fantastic after he was selected following a worldwide search. He was kicking a football with friends at his northern NSW school when he got the news he had beaten thousands of other hopefuls for the role. The humble young star credits his family and friends and their support for his success. “I just live a normal life and I went to a normal school,” says Nicholas, whose next movie, IT: Chapter Two, opens in September. “I’ve been in LA a lot and filmed the IT movies in Toronto – I like the hustle and bustle of a big metropolis,” he says. “When I’m home with my mates, we go out for a few casual beers and have a yarn.” Danger Close opens on August 8

WHO YOU THINK I AM (MA15+) hhhkj Director Safy Nebbou Starring Juliette Binoche, Francois Civil, Nicole Garcia A middle-aged university lecturer makes a Faustian pact with Facebook in this gripping psychological thriller. There are no portraits gathering dust in Claire Millaud’s (Binoche) attic. Instead, it’s the woman herself who is wasting away – consumed by her eternally youthful avatar. Recounting her story to a locum psychiatrist (Garcia), Claire peels back the layers of her online obsession with Alex Chelly (Civil), a young man who is 20-plus years her junior. After being traded in by her husband for a younger model (Marie-Ange Casta), Claire forms a casual sexual relationship with an arrogant 20-something architect named Ludo (Guillaume Gouix). When Ludo refuses to take one of her phone calls, Claire creates a fake online profile to track his whereabouts. That’s how she “meets” his friend and flat mate, Alex, a budding photographer with whom she quickly becomes infatuated.Their online chemistry is immediate and intense. Revelling in her ability to wind back the clock, thus becoming young and desirable again, Claire’s real identity slowly begins to merge with that of her girlish fantasy. Who You Think I Am has as many endings as a Peter Jackson fantasy, but the final twist plays out just right.

MODERN TAKE ... Daisy Ridley and George MacKay as Ophelia and Hamlet.

OPHELIA (M) hhhjj Director Claire McCarthy Starring Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts, Clive Owen This medieval mash-up reimagines Hamlet from his tragic sweetheart’s point of view. Starring Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) in the title role, the romantic adventure sees Ophelia as a contemporary heroine: independent, passionate, resourceful. She has the beauty – and bearing – of a modern Disney princess. Ophelia’s idyllic backdrop reinforces this impression, from the exquisite tapestries that hang on the castle walls to the flowerstrewn countryside that surrounds it. There’s a beautifully-composed recreation of John Everett Millais’s PreRaphaelite masterpiece in which the lifeless Danish noblewoman lies partially submerged in the river. In Australian director Claire McCarthy’s playful retelling of familiar events, Ophelia is shrewd

enough to navigate her own way through the corridors of power but so pure of heart, she doesn’t fall prey to potential pitfalls. Largely invisible due to her lowly status as a lady-in-waiting, but favoured by Queen Gertrude (Watts), Ophelia has unprecedented access to Elsinore’s inner sanctum. And so the 14th century trailblazer can observe the kingdom’s political machinations at close quarters. She’s an impartial witness to Claudius’s (Owen) treacherous plots and schemes as well as Gertrude’s internal struggle with her increasingly limited choices. In this version of events, Hamlet and Ophelia are a committed couple; the prince’s insanity is a deliberate ploy. The Bard’s verse is recontextualised to fit the new narrative. When Ophelia runs out of her own material – she is not mentioned in the original play after the funeral scene – the filmmakers take twists and turns from other Shakespearean plays, taking her story in unexpected directions.

Rejecting a fate that is determined by vengeance and retribution, Ophelia opts for an alternative existence, in which men appear to have little influence. The film’s resolution offers a fresh twist on Hamlet’s quote about nunneries. Ridley is well cast as the feisty rebel who has the courage and intelligence to triumph over centuries of patriarchal oppression. Watts lends sympathetic depth to Gertrude, although she is less convincing as the Queen’s witchy/healer double Metchtild, a character that strays into fantasy territory to be entirely plausible. George Mackay is solid as Hamlet but he doesn’t have a whole lot to work with – in this story, Hamlet is a supporting player. Based on the novel by Lisa Klein, Ophelia is hardly in the same league as Angela Carter (The Company of Wolves) or Jean Rhys (Wild Sargasso Sea). But it does represent a light, bright, entertaining retelling of a male-skewing classic. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

SAND, SEA AND SWEETS … Ralph Wilson’s Storm over the Sandhills 2018, (top left) and Summer, Frenchmans Beach 2019 (below left); John Honeywill’s Head and lemons 2019 (top right); and All sorts I 2019 (below left).

Signature takes For a breath of fresh air, head to a show of sensational seascapes and stunning still lifes by two master painters Phil Brown If you don’t have time to actually enjoy the waters and islands of Moreton Bay, you could always go there vicariously – through viewing a painting by Ralph Wilson. Ralph, 63, is the master when it comes to painting this region and for decades he has been chronicling the nuances of wind, waves, weather and the landscape of the islands and waters around Moreton Bay. He agrees that viewing or having one of his paintings is “the next best thing to being there” but follows that by making a

16 BRISBANE NEWS July 31-August 6, 2019

point. “The best thing is actually being there,” Ralph says. “There’s no substitute for that.” He’s right of course. Ralph’s latest exhibition at Philip Bacon Galleries is entitled Islands for obvious reasons. Ralph is showing with another of the gallery’s stalwarts, John Honeywill. John, 66, is like Wilson in that he is a waterman (both have been keen surfers although Wilson is a bit of a master mariner as well) and both are painters of the old school. That is they just paint. And they do so beautifully.

Ralph’s paintings are realistic but poetic and I would say they are a breath of fresh air but really, they are like a breath of sea air. So why does Ralph persist with the same subject matter? Because that subject matter is always different. “You go to these places and things change with the light and the weather,” Ralph says. “So it’s always fresh and it’s always as if I have never seen it before.” He even likes bad weather and will ride out a storm just for the drama it unfolds across the land, sea and sky. The exhibition by Brisbane painter John features an exquisite array of still life works, some inspired by a residency at the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre. The late Margaret Olley started her career painting as a student at Somerville

House school in South Brisbane. John, who retired in 2017, taught art at Somerville House for 31 years. It's a nice connection. During his residency down the Tweed way he had access to some of the objects in the recreation of Olley’s home studio there. “These objects have provided an ongoing source of inspiration and are included in a number of the paintings in this exhibition,” John points out. There are jugs and vases and a beautiful wooden sculpture in Head and lemons. There are also some of John’s signature sweets paintings including a couple featuring licorice allsorts. Yum. waterfront site on the Gold Coast’s Coomera River sets the scene for this residential gem that’s more akin to a resort than a home. Designed by architect Justin Humphrey, it celebrates the owners’ love of subtropical architecture through a masterful combination of building and landscape. “They wanted a place of refuge from 24 BRISBANE NEWS July 31-August 6, 2019

demanding lives and a connection to the water and landscape,” Justin says. “We’ve designed it to give equal priority to indoor and outdoor spaces.” The generous floor plan is sheltered by a monumental “floating” roof, from which openings are carved to let in sunlight to illuminate pocket gardens. The greenery forms a “green spine” connecting the front yard to the river through the centre of the

house. Circulation is encouraged around these gardens so that the living world is made part of the everyday experience of moving through the home. “Landscape is folded into the house to add interest and also to reduce the visual scale of the building from the outside,” Justin says. The gardens also have a discreet functional purpose, helping to reduce energy demands and the need for artificial lighting and airconditioning. “Interior courtyard gardens allow dappled natural light to flood deep into the interior living spaces,” Justin says. “And the gardens work with external openings to draw in prevailing breezes, reducing the need to mechanically cool the house.”

Gardens also help to order the plan, dividing private areas from public thoroughfares and social spaces. Bedrooms arranged along the western side are screened by greenery from the more functional and social area on the eastern side. The study, laundry, kitchen and dining areas all hug this eastern boundary wall, which is a design element in its own right. “We chose to express and celebrate the eastern edge with a grand tactile gesture – a board-formed concrete wall,” Justin says. “It communicates the materiality of the house to passing neighbours while remaining private to the ajacent easement.” The journey from the front door, past V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

From here a generous terrace and pool deck extends toward the river’s edge, sheltered below the sail roof. “Generous overhangs provide deep zones of cooling shade and rain protection,” Justin says. “The large northern roof overhang allows lower winter sun to penetrate deep into the living areas and heat the stone-covered slab ... making it a more comfortable place to be in on a winter’s evening.” A key consideration in the design was ensuring social spaces could expand to host large gatherings with family and friends. To answer this call, Justin devised the outrageously inviting Passion Pit. “The Passion Pit is a sunken space V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

family and friends together in a casual and comfortable auditorium. In winter, the fireplace is the focus while in summer it is the river, with its passing watercraft, that provides the entertainment. The fluid connections between Passion Pit, terrace and interior ensure there is always a sense of ease and relaxation in the way the spaces are occupied. The home’s distinctive sculptural form is achieved through the softening of corners, and the use of a rich and robust material palette including off-form concrete and timber. “The fine battened timber screen is a continuous element throughout the private spaces of the house,” Justin says. “The timber battens are highly tactile and

together with board-formed concrete, add texture, depth and intimacy.” Much like the gardens, the robust and tactile finishes are designed to improve with age. “One of the most satisfying things has been seeing the integration of the landscape and house improve as the plants mature,” Justin says. “As time passes, plants are cascading down the concrete walls, reaching up towards timber ceilings and proving that they are just as important to the success of the house as the timber or concrete.” Architect: Justin Humphrey, justinhumphreyarchitect.com.au Builder: BJ Millar Constructions, bjmillar.com.au Photography: Andy Macpherson

t’s just staggeringly beautiful. Ted Robinson-designed golf links fan out in all directions and a freshwater lake, home to fish and birds including a flock of flamingoes, shimmers under the desert sun. Palm trees tower overhead and, in the distance, far away from this oasis of green, the Santa Rosa Mountains rise to snow-capped peaks. If I was seated in the back of a limo, champagne glass in hand, I could imagine myself a star of the 1950s – one of the Gabor sisters perhaps, or Liz Taylor – who owned architect-designed pads in Palm Springs, southern California, a handy 1.5hour drive east of Los Angeles and its Hollywood studios. Oh the glamour. In reality, I am doing my best to pilot 26 BRISBANE NEWS July 31-August 6, 2019

a Nissan Rogue rental, a left-hand drive, down the driveway of the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa. With my kids refraining “You’re doing good, mum!” from the back seat and a dear pal doing the navigating, I have just managed the 1.5hour drive from Disneyland, Anaheim, much of it on six-lane freeways, without incident. Rattled, I am in need of a gin and tonic when, at last, the resort’s majestic facade comes into view. We made it! One of the largest resorts in the Coachella Valley, the eight-storey property on 182ha is 25 minutes from Palm Springs, and its marvels of mid-century architecture, and 10 minutes from the shopping and dining district of El Paseo. But with four swimming pools, two

championship golf courses, tennis centre, luxury spa, several restaurants (as well as its own Starbucks in the lobby), fashion boutiques, and gondolas that collect guests from the 2787sq m atrium inside the hotel for rides on the lake, you might be quite happy staying put. My children love chatting to the exotic parrots perched all over the public areas, and we are soon regulars at the familyfriendly Fisherman’s Landing with its tasty seafood chowder, crab quesadillas and Californian wines. The friendly staff tell us our timing is perfect as Coachella crowds will descend right after we leave. Electric-powered and therefore whisper-quiet, the boats glide along as the captain points out species of birds, plus hotel trivia. For example, the lake is filled with recycled water from the resort, grass species on the golf courses are switched twice a year to better handle summer and winter conditions, and it is highly likely the honking we heard last night was from a Canadian goose! tables, timber headboards, and neutralhued drapes that pull back to reveal that million-dollar mountain view. We find ourselves in the mountains the following day on a luxury Hummer tour of Joshua Tree National Park. Seasoned guide Jeff Gardner collects us from the hotel at 2pm – the later time avoids the heat of the day and allows for desert sunset views – and after collecting a retired couple from Cedar Rapids from their nearby Airbnb, we’re off. First stop is the Coachella Valley Preserve, 16km east of Palm Springs in the Indio Hills, which is home to the Thousand Palms Oasis. This mammoth stand of trees is fed by water seeping from the San Andreas Fault. Timber bridges

allow you to walk among the palms, and see the water surging up below. We enjoy the cool for a short while before continuing to the main event: Joshua Tree National Park, an ecological melting pot of two great deserts, the Mojave and Colorado, that merge in a vibrant array of plant and animals. President Franklin Roosevelt signed a proclamation in 1936, designating 3213sq km of what is now Joshua Tree National Park a national monument. It became a national park in 1994. We approach through the West Entrance, snapping wildflowers, spotting big-eared jack rabbits, and marvelling at the trees for which the park is named. Tour guide Jeff, who is also a musician,

plays the War of the Worlds soundtrack on the car stereo to heighten the drama of the rugged terrain, and the amazing inselberg rock formations that resemble small mountains that rise abruptly, like an island, from virtually level ground. Jeff parks the Hummer and we clamber out to climb the huge boulders – no harness required, which is perfect for rock-climbing rookies like us. The Joshua trees are the heroes here, and they are in bloom. It happens just once every seven years, for four-six weeks, so we are thrilled to see these flowers that resemble clusters of popcorn. Jeff explains the trees are not really trees, but part of the yucca family, and inspired the truffula trees in Dr Seuss’s The Lorax – a fun fact my children love. Irish band U2, equally inspired by the landscape, used it as the title of their topselling 1987 album, with the cover image shot in the park’s Death Valley. The trees’ name, though, dates back to the 1800s when Mormon settlers came through the area and thought the plants looked like the biblical character Joshua, with arms raised to the heavens in prayer. We see the trees everywhere, and no two are the same. As daylight fades we make our ascent on backroads, dust flying in our wake, to Eureka Peak. The fourth highest summit in the park, the peak is 1682m above sea level in Black Rock Canyon. The wind whips up, the mercury plummets – this is a desert, after all – and we huddle together for warmth to absorb the grandeur of the valleys below, bathed in golden light. It’s a sunset like no other. In the distance, we can just make out the palm tree-sprigged JW Marriott and, after a quick stop at Pappy & Harriet’s – an honest-to-goodness western saloon where Paul McCartney once did a surprise set during Coachella – we make our return to civilisation. It’s been an epic adventure but Fisherman’s Landing, and its crisp Napa Valley whites, are calling. Jane Harper Macmillan Australia, $33

Candice Fox Bantam Australia, $33

After Jane Harper’s recordbreaking and stunning debut The Dry, the Melbourne writer has arguably produced her most gripping work yet with this new novel. The Lost Man is set in an isolated community in outback Queensland, around the Burley Downs cattle station, 1500km west of Brisbane. The station is owned by the Bright family and when middle brother Cam is found dead, near an infamous old stockman’s grave, it is up to the eldest, Nathan, to figure out how and why Cam died. Was it murder or suicide? Harper melds a chilling atmosphere and a richly-drawn cast of characters in this brilliant read.

The north Queensland landscape of the fictional town of Crimson Lake offers the perfect setting for Fox’s series of mysteries featuring unlikely private investigator duo, disgraced cop Ted Conkaffey and convicted killer Amanda Pharrell. In Gone By Midnight Ted and Amanda are brought in by concerned mother Sara Farrow, over the disappearance of her young son Richie. At the same time, Ted’s daughter – whom he barely knows – comes to stay. To find the boy, Ted must dredge up the areas’s worst characters, something that could put his own daughter in harm’s way. Fox has a gift for crafting thrillers filled with both horror and humour – and plenty of banter.

The Scholar

Wintering

Dervla McTiernan HarperCollins, $33

Krissy Kneen Text Publishing, $30 Brisbane author Krissy Kneen has an impressive and diverse backlist of titles encompassing memoir, erotic fiction and poetry. Now she has turned her talents to her first mystery, Wintering, and has chosen the dark Tasmanian forest for its sinister setting. The world of wildlife guide and PhD Jessica comes crashing down when the car of her boyfriend Matthew is found deserted in a forest. An enigmatic final image recorded on his phone incites further questions as Jessica, as well as the small isolated community, seek answers. Kneen proves she can produce a tensionfilled tale full of interesting characters, mysterious creatures and genuinely chilling events.

Perth-based author Dervla McTiernan’s debut bestseller The Ruin won international acclaim and now she is back with her second thriller featuring DS Cormac Reilly, set in Galway, Ireland. This time things get very personal because murder takes place near the workplace of Reilly’s girlfriend, the brilliant scientist Dr Emma Sweeney, a key researcher for Irish pharmaceutical giant Darcy Therapeutics. It is Emma who alerts Cormac when she stumbles across the victim on a street, and as Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to Darcy Therapeutics. Irish-born McTiernan again proves herself a talented storyteller with this well-structured mystery.

LAST WORD

Phil Brown I was a young tearaway surf dude on the one hand but, in private, I was more a pipe and slippers and tartan dressing gown sort of guy Above my son’s piano hang two portraits of yours truly. They’ve been there for ages so I have forgotten about them and so has my son. He’s too concerned playing to notice his old man peering down at him, in duplicate. But we had a little piano recital at home recently and when I put some photos on Facebook my presence was mentioned, with one critic wondering how he could perform with this glowering presence. My wife gave a little speech at the end of the recital and mentioned the paintings. One of them was done when I was quite young and she referred to it as a portrait of me when I was “an angry young man”. There was a pause after that and I felt

someone had to say something so I piped up: “And now I’m a grumpy old man.” I thought I should get in before anyone else. Now don’t get me wrong – I don’t think I am an old man. Technically I’m still middle-aged and I’m hanging on to that. But in my heart of hearts I have been an old man since I was a boy. A friend once described me as “an old soul”, which is the sort of thing people used to say in the 1970s. “Like old King Cole?” I replied, facetiously. The difference is that he was a merry old soul. My friends Ross Fitzgerald and Lyndal Moor edited a book some years ago entitled Growing Old (Disgracefully), which featured 35 writers talking about that

subject. I wrote a chapter entitled Old Before My Time, which was a humorous look at how early I became a curmudgeon. When I was 10 or 11 and looked, with my thick specs, like a young Stephen Hawking, I was already training for my dotage, particularly in the grumpy stakes. As a teenager I was a young tearaway surf dude on the one hand but, in private, I was more a pipe and slippers and tartan dressing gown sort of guy and yes, I did smoke a pipe. I gave up the pipe years ago but I still love nothing more than spending time at home in my tartan dressing gown and slippers. Ask anyone who has ever come around

for afternoon tea or dinner and they will know that gown. Not because I wear it during social intercourse (if you’ll pardon the expression) but because at some stage in the proceedings I will don it as a sign that the social event has ended. Eat your heart out Ebenezer Scrooge. My inner grumpy old man has always been there and my brother and sister and their friends were often on the wrong end of it when we were teenagers. They’d be partying downstairs when I would appear, like the Ghost of Christmas Past, ranting about how the noise was disturbing my reading. Like I said, old before my time ... and loving it.

It started life as a typical three-bedroom Ascot Queenslander but a massive renovation has transformed Dobson Estate, into a five-bedroom Hamptons-style home. The house, which was bought by Zephyr Industries in October last year, has been raised, renovated and extended. Zephyr’s Brayden Larkin says the project involved “a lot of work” but it had paid off with the end result exactly what he had been hoping they would achieve. He says the Ascot address had been a big drawcard when they were looking for a project and the style and layout of the home had made it ideal for a makeover. “The home was built circa 1900 so everything in it was original, although it was run down,” Brayden says. “(Raising) it was a delicate job because there were two original chimneys upstairs and we wanted to ensure there was no damage done to them while we were raising the house.” The chimneys survived the raising unscathed and the two fireplaces, one marble from the 1900s, were reconditioned and are now in full operating order. Brayden says the carpenters ensured

Family favourite One of Karen Lane’s fondest memories of their Hawthorne home was watching her three daughters swinging from the giant poinciana tree and creating their own secret hideaways in the garden. “That would be my favourite memory, the girls playing their imaginary games,” she says. But with those girls now adults, it is time to move on after 17 years, a prospect that Karen and her husband are doing with a heavy heart. The couple bought the sprawling property in 2002, with the 1930s California bungalow-style house undergoing two renovations. The first stage of the renovations involved adding an extension which included a parents’ retreat and a large open living area. The kitchen was also redone and a terrace with polished concrete floors was added. During stage two of the renovations, the original bathroom and sleep-out were transformed into a pavilion-style bathroom. Karen says the terrace, which has its own pizza oven, was her favourite spot in the house, and had hosted many family events over the years. The bungalow sits

on a 1335sq m corner block, with the gardens designed by Steve Clegg Designs. In the home’s centre is a spacious lounge room that adjoins a music room and a formal dining room. Marking the transition from the original build into the modern extension is a split-level staircase that leads from the central corridor down to the kitchen, which has timber cabinetry, stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances and an island benchtop.
